Hi Dark,
Dungeon is worth taking a look at, there are some differences that make it
something to look at. For example, the endgame is slightly different in
terms of how it works. Also there's some different locations, and you
don't

have a silver skull nor a scepter as a treasure. I wouldn't say it's very
different, just nice to check out a compilation of some of my favorite IF
titles and definitely infocom classics.

hmmm
there are several reasons I have not bothered.
one being I don't have a working synth that works.
2. I have no external drive at least one that will run 720kb disks.
3. I don't have a working external synth and or serial ports.
I know hal can handle command mode in windows some but I honestly havn't
bothered with running my games that way.
I use command mode in windows to get system functions that I need to run
outside windows like agx creating and such.
I'm not really that desperate I have most stuff running and I seriously don't
want to run something that will try to directly access hardware meaning
crashing and probably reformatting the system so windows boots.

hmmm agt is adventure gaming toolkit.
in cosmoserve you are a programmer trying to make your living and you are also
a plumber.
Anyway you need to get this program to a client by 8 in the morning the next
day.
Firstly though you need to find your password.
On finding said thing you log on only to find the system is hacked, a virus has
taken over the net and will slowly eat your system into the ground.
on top of that you need to find how to fix your program, you are hungry and if
you don't get something done you will be quite broke by morning.
hmmm did I mention you could go to jail to, probably die in some places, etc.
in short you are rather a mess.
not that you actually have much time to think about this, as you need to
contend with a hacker and a sysop gone insanely nuts pluss well the virus you
actually do face it.
and well if you don't speak to a sertain someone before you get that sorted
you die.
I think you get the picture.
it was in one of the audyssey issues.

Hi Lisa,
H...I'd have to think about that a while. A lot would depend on if
I could get an idea of how the interpreter works and have a good idea
of what variables, structs, exist in the original agt interpreter so I
can read and save the agt files. The rest of it such as creating a
window with a standard Windows textbox to display the text on screen
is the easy part.

Cheers!

well I wish there was agt for windows.
agility tries to be agt for windows.
however it would be good if it converted all text of all games including
computer prompts, etc.
there is no market for it which is a pitty.
agility is old the last release copywrite was 2001 but there is source there
and its in standard c so its not like someone could change it.
its done under the gpl version2 aparently.

Hi Lisa,
H...I'd have to think about that a while. A lot would depend on if
I could get an idea of how the interpreter works and have a good idea
of what variables, structs, exist in the original agt interpreter so I
can read and save the agt files. The rest of it such as creating a
window with a standard Windows textbox to display the text on screen
is the easy part.

Cheers!

Hi Shaun,
Have you tried a dos emulator like Dosbox, and if so what was the
result? I mean the Windows command prompt is suppose to be backwards
compatible, to a point, with older Dos applications, but the 16 byt
apps do seam to have problems. There suppose to be work arounds
though.

well I never heard of agt for windows.
there was agility I think but it means you need to convert the games and I
really havn't tried it.
at any rate I think it takes away the feel having to recompile the stuff
so I can play it on another editer and I never had luck with it anyway.

I wish there was agt for windows.

The game I will most miss is cosmoserve.
though thinking of it now it would be weird to play it in a windows
environment.
dos related screens don't work so well anyway, in hugo playing futureboy
the screen in the fake dos window of the computer does not read.
using the solution file I am able to solve that part of the game but I
can't muck with the interface which is a shame.

This is one reason why I still wish I had a dos system.

select plover or mirror.ifarchive.org
next go to games there are games based on interpreter.
inform is inform games in the root of the archivers there are interpriters
folders for zcode, tads, etc.

well I never heard of agt for windows.
there was agility I think but it means you need to convert the games and I
really havn't tried it.
at any rate I think it takes away the feel having to recompile the stuff so
I can play it on another editer and I never had luck with it anyway.

Hi Dark,
In regards to an earlier post of yours, I know what you mean. I was
playing
the zcode version of zork, and I had no idea how to enter the mirror to
get
to the door in the endgame. The walkthrough I had said "enter the box".
This
did work at all. I found out that I had to simply type "enter". That
was a
relief to finally figure out, though exasperating none the saime--I do
like
the way that one was combined from the three infocom zorks, and it
doesn't

hurt they added a bit here and there.

well I didn't care for zork myself dungeon and dunjin were my things I played.
on that note is there any way to play agt files in windows like you play other
files I have tads and frotz working hugo and glulx which I am happy using right
now but agt and maybe a windows advint interpreter would make a cool addition
for the stuff that uses it.
unfortunately there are several dos games I know which I can't play but stil

Hi Mike,
Most games, such as those found on the interactive fiction archive, are free
to play. However, some of (or all of) the companies I've ever heard of that
make these games end up charing a fee to play them, or in the Infocom/Level9
days, buying them on floppy disc.

Hmmm, I can't recall azteca specifically, but remember how well you c an
interact with game elements depends very much on how much of a brain the
creator had.

I spent ages trying to get through the fireplace in the pentory prequal, ---

north, (sinse it was in the north wall), enter fire place "you can't enter
that" when it turned out I had to type in, for the love of pete!

I don't remember any such issue with azteca, but I will confess this
business with the prequal, and the fact that I can make no headway
whatsoever with the demo of the first game rather put me off malinch's
stuff.

As with regular fiction though, this just depends upon who wrote the game,
and there is a lot more interactive fiction available than just malinches'
stuff, check those links I sent in the previous message for starters,
then have a look at http://www.wurb.com/if/ and search for something with
good reviews that looks interesting.

personally, I'd recommend stuff by emily short, paul obrian and aAndrew
plotkin, but again this depends upon my personal preference for weerd
exploritory fantasy stuff.

Hi Dark,
Lol! I like your rusty latch puzzle...that's very infocomy. Two puzzles that
have always stumped me as for logic are the royal puzzle and the robbing the
bank puzzle. The royal puzzle makes sense, sure...if you can picture the
entire thing, but the bank puzzle is completely and totally illogical. I
must admit that most of my experience with even the easiest of Infocom IF
was started by perusing the entire walk through. Particulary the
Zork/Enchanter games which I always found very puzzling. Mazes were never my

In fact I must admit, some if puzles just irritate me for their total lack

Of course, this might just be because I'm probably more inclined toward rpgs

directory tree you have to navigate; it depends on what you want--the site
is quite large and all I can say is you'll have to experiment. What are you
looking for, I may be able to find it quickly for you?
Best Regards,

Hi Mike,
Most games, such as those found on the interactive fiction archive, are free

Actually mike, it's malinch who are the exception, being as apart from them
and futureboy, everything else is free, and taken over entirely by if
enthusiasts. The only reason they don't get pages on audiogames.net is that
there are literally thousands of games available, so I just give links to
the correct format games for the interpreters.

Check out the baffs' guide link for details, reviews and such.

To be honest haiden, I never got on well with zork, but then again I
personally prefer if games which have more background than just "go into the
dungeon and grab treasures" and more than random puzles.

In fact I must admit, some if puzles just irritate me for their total lack
of logic.

"ah, so I was supposed to open the catch on the rusty door by blowing the
whistle at the bird to scare it off, getting the egg from the nest, then
droping the newspaper and twigs on the floor and using the magnifying glass
to focus sunlight, then putting the dustbin lid ontop, dropping in the egg,
frying it and using it to greace the rusty latch!" how silly of me not to
realize that perfectly rational change of logic!

I must confess this is why I don't really play much If anymore, sinse it's
too much trouble to try and filter the to me, interesting exploration and
story based stuff from all the games based on absurd puzles which i then
need to look at a walkthrough to guess.

Of course, this might just be because I'm probably more inclined toward rpgs
and that style of play myself in general, and didn't grown up with the
classic if or get into the method of playing it.

Hi Dark,
In regards to an earlier post of yours, I know what you mean. I was
playing
the zcode version of zork, and I had no idea how to enter the mirror to
get
to the door in the endgame. The walkthrough I had said "enter the box".
This

did work at all. I found out that I had to simply type "enter". That was a
relief to finally figure out, though exasperating none the saime--I do
like

the way that one was combined from the three infocom zorks, and it doesn't
hurt they added a bit here and there.

I can't remember precisely but They correspond to the life of the wizard

I've run win frotz with Hal, win frotz tts, and win tads.

personally, I've always gone on what games I liked, rather than the
interpreter.

Thus my favourite games have been worlds apart and bable which were tads,
dreamhold, the djini chronicles, pythos mask, lash and wearing the claw
which were zcode, and then the earth and sky series which started in
zcode,

then moved into glulks.

You can find them all by searching baffs' guide.

As I said, I completed azteca, but thought it was okay, then started the
pentori series on the basis that malinches' very aggressive promotional
style (which actually i find to be rather irritating), and the fact that
their a commercial company must have some basis in fact, but after getting
stuck in the fireplace in the first pentori prequal (I had to actually
E-mail malinch about that one), then getting practically nowhwere with the
next pentori game, well lets just say i sort of lost interest.

A BrailleNote? What? All you need is a zcode interpreter. What humanware did
was to creat an interpreter based on the JZip interpreter. That said, you

Most games, such as those found on the interactive fiction archive, are free
to play. However, some of (or all of) the companies I've ever heard of that
make these games end up charing a fee to play them, or in the Infocom/Level9
days, buying them on floppy disc.
Best Regards,
Hayden

Beware the Grue!

Hi Dark,
In regards to an earlier post of yours, I know what you mean. I was playing
the zcode version of zork, and I had no idea how to enter the mirror to get
to the door in the endgame. The walkthrough I had said "enter the box". This
did work at all. I found out that I had to simply type "enter". That was a
relief to finally figure out, though exasperating none the saime--I do like
the way that one was combined from the three infocom zorks, and it doesn't
hurt they added a bit here and there.
Best Regards,
Hayden

No problem with traffic about if on this list, --- ask away.

If you are a newby though, you could do much worse than checking out

beginners'

I'd also recommend you try the game dreamhold by andrew plotkin found at

you can run this with windows frotz, winfrotz (including the winfrotz tts

game

files.

It's a really great story and adventure, but whats' more is it's probably
the best introduction to If I've seen. there are various ones knocking

commands,
and what puzles are, dreamhold is deffinately my favourite (not the least

Beware the grue!

No problem with traffic about if on this list, --- ask away.

If you are a newby though, you could do much worse than checking out
http://www.microheaven.com/IFGuide/step2.html which have a great
beginners'
guide.

I'd also recommend you try the game dreamhold by andrew plotkin found at
http://ifarchive.heanet.ie/if-archive/games/zcode/dreamhold.z8

you can run this with windows frotz, winfrotz (including the winfrotz tts
version which outputs directly to sapi), or anything which plays z code
game

files.

It's a really great story and adventure, but whats' more is it's probably
the best introduction to If I've seen. there are various ones knocking
about, but for a hands on in game intro going through how to give

and what puzles are, dreamhold is deffinately my favourite (not the least

Re: [Audyssey] Any interactive fiction fans out there?

2010-04-04 Thread dark

Well I am trying to figure out azteca and I got to embarrassing point of
the

jaguar room but can't figure out how to open the wall by the jaguar.

I see it is very similar to muds and sometimes the concepts on how it
works.

I will ask questions as I run across them but it looks great so far.

Hi mike.

No problem with traffic about if on this list, --- ask away.

If you are a newby though, you could do much worse than checking out
http://www.microheaven.com/IFGuide/step2.html which have a great
beginners'

guide.

I'd also recommend you try the game dreamhold by andrew plotkin found at
http://ifarchive.heanet.ie/if-archive/games/zcode/dreamhold.z8

you can run this with windows frotz, winfrotz (including the winfrotz tts
version which outputs directly to sapi), or anything which plays z code
game

files.

It's a really great story and adventure, but whats' more is it's probably
the best introduction to If I've seen. there are various ones knocking
about, but for a hands on in game intro going through how to give
commands,

and what puzles are, dreamhold is deffinately my favourite (not the least
because it's an incredibly interesting game and story in it's own right).

hth.

Hi List:

Are there any interactive fiction fans out there? If so, can you please
contact me off list? I would sincerely appreciate a newbie to this area
some
help and explanations and do not want to fill this list with more
traffic.

Thanks in advance.
