Not quite sure what you mean by the footmen talking, but that may be because
I don't have your soundpack. As far as the maps go, the closest to a fresh
start you're likely to find is a map like jl1.

Hi everyone, I've started playing sound rts again, but when I'm playing the
tutorial 1 map, I'm finding myself being distracted by the footmen, for
example when they are moving around, It sounds like they are saying
something over and over, like a muttering sound, and I'm struggling to hear
my pesants working over them talking. I found the sound rts mailing list,
but I can't see an option to subscribe, and 2 of the audio reviews on
audiogames.net give me the 404 file not found message.

I'm using a soundpack a friend gave me, because it has much better voices
and the pesants don't sound like munchkins. :)

I'm also not sure which map to pick to play in single player mode, I've done
the basic tutorials, but all the other maps seem to be pretty big with
buildings created already.

I hope someone can give me a few starter tips. Thanks, from Lori.

[Audyssey] Sound rts.

2014-07-31 Thread loriduncan
Hi everyone, I’ve just downloaded sound rts, but can only seem to access the 2
tutorial maps in single player mode. I’ve managed to complete both, but would
like to keep on playing against the computer, until I get confident enough to
play on line. Is there a way to have the computer pick a random map for me to
play on?

I’m also having some sound issues during game play. For example, when I’m on
the square with the town hall, i hear the people sound, but then it cuts out,
and starts up again a second later, like it hasn’t been looped properly. I
find it quite distracting, so would like to replace that sound with something
else if possible.

I’d also like to hear an online recording of people playing the game.

From Lori.

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS

2011-05-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lori,

Well, I personally like SoundRTS. Its a great strategy game where you
start out with a few peasants and try and build an empire by training
footmen, archers, knights, etc and concoring the enemy players.
Although, I will say it is a bit more fun in a human vs human game as
they will make more intelligent decisions than the computer. I've seen
the computer make some rediculous decisions nobody in their right mind
would try.

For instance, let's assume I whiped out most of the enemy forces and
they decided to rebuild somewhere else. I might let them go while I
fortify my positions. Next thing I know the computer will send one
maybe two footmen to my fortified position to take on five well armed
knights. Like, stupid, I'll slaughter those footmen without thinking
about it. Why didn't the computer try and train some knights and send
at least four or five knights to try and even the odds or something?
Basically, what I'm saying is planning ahead isn't the computers
strong suit.

Smile.

Hi Lori,

As far as I know the latest soundpack for SoundRTS ships with the
game. As far as people fading in and out that could be because they
are moving around. The peasants for example will often move around as
they dig gold, chop wood, or perform some other task you asign them
to. As for the town halls, keeps, etc specifically I think that is
just the way the ambience loop was made. It loops a while goes silent
and starts up again. Its nothing to worry about.

Cheers!

Hi Lori,

Unfortunately, not. When you give them an order all they will say is
ok and do it. As I recall in Warcraft, the game SoundRTS is loosely
based on, I think the units will say sometimes say yes my lord and
things like that. You'd have to mod SoundRTS with new peasant
responces for them to say anything else other than ok.

Cheers!

Hey, has anybody written any campaigns for SoundRTS? I just started playing

Re: [Audyssey] sound rts

2011-02-13 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ben,

I'm not quite sure what the problem is but whenever you build
something you usually need three things. Enough gold for production,
enough wood to build the building, and an empty medow to put it on. If
an area doesn't suit those three requirements you have to explore and
locate a place that does.

[Audyssey] Sound rts campeigns?

2010-02-05 Thread dark
I do confess, I've slightly lost touch with this one.

not really being the multiplayer competitive sort, I've not really got heavily
into sound rts, certainly not compared to me and entombed, sinse I was
waiting for the introduction of full on missions and campeigns against the
computer with story and objectives.

I was wondering if someone more in touch with things could let me know if this
has indeed been done? I recall someone mentioned something about a
campeign they'de created on audiogames.net, --- but I'm afraid i was rather
snowed under with other matters at the time and didn't get chance to check it
out.

Any further information would be appreciated.

thanks in advance:

[Audyssey] sound-rts ideas

2009-08-03 Thread Josh
Hi,

I have some ideas for the next sound-rts.
1. ability to add your own background music in ogg file to play while you play
various ssingle and multiplayer maps. music plays in loops, volume of music can
be controlled, music controlled by music on/off in menu. each map and section
can have its own music.

2. ability to rename units and buildings.
Finally I will buy a new netbook next month and when I do I plan on seeing what
fantasy video game intros I can get on youtube and convert to mp3 maybe I could
make maps based on fantasy games with cut scenes and stuff.

[Audyssey] Sound rts single player?

2009-03-02 Thread dark
I was just wondering if the single player and mission aspects of sound rts have
recieved any updates yet.

while I know there are numerous maps available, I was wondering if any had
actual story, or different objectives.

I admit I'm not the most competative person ever, but would be interested in a
campeign mode or story mode as the original warcraft games had.

Any info would be appreciated.

Hi, if you allow traffic through port 2500, others will be able to login to
your server. Anyway, there are usually 2 or more servers up and are quite
active. If others can't connect to you, you can still login to other active
servers and find players there.
The latest version of sound rts is 1.0 beta 10o. You should upgrade if you
haven't. Great improvements and many new maps added. Get it from

It is very easy. Just press enter on Server, then go to either simple server
where only you can create games, or public server where others can create
games. You can also create a private server and it won't be added to the
  public list of servers.

  Hope this helps.

Is there a way of setting up a server with sound RTS without needing to
know so mutch about networking? I've noticed that setting up a server in a

It seems to me that Sound RTS assumes quite a bit of networking knowledge.
someone please correct me if I'm mistaken here, I don't want to sound like
i'm criticising the game, it's ausum in single player, it's just getting

 Hi Aiden,
Well, it all depends on what ports are blocked by the router.
Obviously, the ports Topspeeed uses are not filtered and that is why you
are getting a two way connection. However, the port that SoundRTS is
either being blocked by your router, or you have a firewall program
blocking the port. Either way chances are good that the port is closed
or filtered by an application or the router.

 aiden gardiner wrote:

 sound
 RTS can't?

Hi Aiden, when players enter sound rts multi player mode, we can either choose
the server from the list or enter through the IP adress. If you host a server
and give your IP adress, we will be able to login to your server even if your
port 2500 is blocked. This is how topspeed does anyway.

Hi,
By the way, I looked it up and the SoundRTS server port is port 2500. So
you might want to see if that port is closed or being filtered.

Hi Aiden, when players enter sound rts multi player mode, we can either
choose the server from the list or enter through the IP adress. If you
host a server and give your IP adress, we will be able to login to your
server even if your port 2500 is blocked. This is how topspeed does
 anyway.

   Hi Aiden,
Well, it all depends on what ports are blocked by the router.
Obviously, the ports Topspeeed uses are not filtered and that is why you
are getting a two way connection. However, the port that SoundRTS is
either being blocked by your router, or you have a firewall program
blocking the port. Either way chances are good that the port is closed
or filtered by an application or the router.

Re: [Audyssey] sound RTS

2008-08-24 Thread Valiant8086
Your external IP, but you need to tell your router to forward the stuff that
hits that port to the proper computer that is, your internal IP
192.168.nnn.nnn
This way, i think it was port 2800 right? not gonna look so let's assume
it's port 2800 that your server needs to accept connections from. So
computer 1, that's you, is the server. computer b, is a client, someone else
who wants to play on your server. computer b, connects to your external IP,
let's say it's 112.114.110.14 or something. I can't remember my IP stuff
verry well and thus don't know for sure if that's a valid IP, if not, spare
me the lecture... So computer B locates the IP 112.114.110.14 and hits your
router on port 2800. But your router can't host sound rts, so not a whole
lot of interesting things wind up happening, unless you can tell your router
that when comething comes into it on port 2800, send it to the computer on
which the sound rts game would be hosted. Use your internal Ip
address.192.168.nnn.nnn, and find your router's port forwarding feature and
specify the port, I think that port is 2800, and forward to your computer's
IP.

2008-08-23 Thread Casey Mathews
It is very easy. Just press enter on Server, then go to either simple server
where only you can create games, or public server where others can create
games. You can also create a private server and it won't be added to the
public list of servers.

Hope this helps.

It seems to me that Sound RTS assumes quite a bit of networking knowledge.

Hi,
No, it is pretty easy setting up a SoundRTS server. You basically go in
select new multiplayer game, select the map you want to play on wait,
for others to connect, and start the game. One thing though you will
want to make sure your ports are clear for network traffic. I want to
say it is port 7000 for SoundRTS network games.

the teleportation sound. I also changed a couple of the backgrounds and

Hi,
Try to play as a client. Use the beta 9h version, so there will be

they arrive. Or wait for an invitation. Try for example Sebo's server.

 Hi,
Try to play as a client. Use the beta 9h version, so there will be
servers. Choose a server, and create a game and invite players when
they arrive. Or wait for an invitation. Try for example Sebo's server.

Subject: [Audyssey] Sound RTS and Python version?

 Hi Jean'Luc and all,
I have some questions about Sound RTS and the correct Python version.
The reason I am asking is I want to install Sound RTS Beta 9 on my Linux
computer, but the only version pre-installed is Python 2.5, and when I
attempted to uninstall Python 2.5 to install Python 2.4.4 I got the
warning that several packages depends on Python 2.5 being present. As a
result I have no real desire to screw something up by downgrading to an
older release of Python for just one program.
I have considered the possability of installing Python 2.4.4 side by
side with Python 2.5, but I have never done that before and am worried
that might effect something if the wrong Python version is set as the
default. For example, if I made Python 2.4.4 the default all the apps
and services I have installed that depend on 2.5 would obviously crash,
and I can't afford that since my Linux system is rock solid and stable.
This might have been asked before on list, I can't remember, but is
there some compelling reason why you can't upgrade to Python 2.5? It
seams to me that updating to Python 2.5 would be the reasonable thing to
do since it now ships as a core part of most Linux operating systems and
allot of Python apps are migrating from Python 2.4.x to Python 2.5.
Anyway, can you give some advice how to get Sound RTS setup on my Linux
 system?

 Thanks.

Hi Thomas,

You probably don't need to remove Python 2.5. You can probably install
additionally Python 2.4 and call it from the command line. It may be
called python24, while the default interpreter is called python and is
a link to python25. Then type, for example: python24 soundrts.pyc

If it still doesn't work or you don't like this solution, tell me and
I will compile the sources with Python 2.5 and make a patch.

About the reason of this choice, it is linked to the fact that, at
least recently, pygame for Python 2.5 was not available for the Mac.
Moreover, the default version of Python in Debian Linux was Python
2.4.

Hi Thomas,

About writing maps, the instructions for multiplayer maps are at:

But the way to build single player maps is undocumented yet, because
the language is not ready enough.

For example, today, a trigger to say that after 80 seconds the

trigger computer1 (timer 80) (order (a2 1 footman) ((go a1)(go b1)))

I am thinking about using a more flat notation:

add trigger
owner computer1
condition timer 80
action order (a2 1 footman) ((go a1)(go b1))
end

But even in this case the order command may be too nested. Maybe I
don't have the choice. Or maybe I would use the fact that more than
one action would be allowed and that the orders would be added in the
order queue:

add trigger
owner computer1
condition timer 80
action order (a2 1 footman) (go a1)
action order (a2 1 footman) (go b1)
end

Not too bad. Maybe I can totally avoid parenthesis. After all not
everything will be possible, but just enough to have interesting
missions with a balance between specialization and flexibility:

add trigger
owner computer1
condition timer 80
action order 1 footman in a2 to go a1
action order 1 footman in a2 to go b1
end

Hum, I don't know. Or maybe I should go to the opposite direction and
use a LISP-like notation, like EMACS LISP, using even more
parenthesis:

(trigger
 computer1
 (timer 80)
 (order
  (a2 1 footman)
  (
   (go a1)
   (go b1)
  )
 )
)

Not very easy to write. But after all I don't really need the order
command with more than one command. Well...

The problem is that I can't change easily the language when I have
documented it. So I will wait until it is good enough.

Hi thomas,

Yes I see what you mean. Also the other point as well is the likes of
draggans make the game far to easy. You may as well just make a ton of
draggans and go off and burn everything.

The map does need to be bigger. Far bigger to my mind. I like to
explore. I like to find my enemy not to know where it is every time.
That's 1 reason why I loved cossacks so much. But maybe I've been spoilt
by games like that I don't know.

Hi Jean'Luc,
As a relatively new player of Sound RTS I would like to offer my
thoughts and feedback about Sound RTS. After nearly a week of playing I
have really grown to enjoy this game immensely. Though, there are afew
things I think would improve the game for those just playing in
tootorial mode.
First, I really like the strategy elements the game provides. Not only
battle field tactics but having to plan ahead on how you are going to
finance the upgrades, army, and defences. It puts the gamer in a
position to ask if he/she wants to upgrade to a castle or build
something else more immediately useful instead. It is elements like this

that makes the game truly above most Audio games out there. Second, I
have beaten all three tootorials, and I am left with the
feeling what next. Part of my disappointment in beating the game is the
game currently only has a 3 by 3 playing area. Once you use up all the
gold and wood in your posession and crush the enemies in the northern
areas there is no continuation from there. I would personally like to
see a much larger playing map, such as 10 by 10, with the ability to
build both sides up to having castles, dragons, and catipolts, and
having full skaled engagements on a larger skale in tootorial mode.
Perhaps this is possible in online play, I don't know, but as someone
who is not always available for online play I'd like to see this become
apart of the tootorial mode.
Third, as a personal preference I would like to be able to up and down
arrow through the menus rather than tab. I am not sure if anyone else
agrees with me but using arrows rather than tab seams much more natural
to me than tabbing around the screen to find the map or tootorial I
want. I guess I'll stop here for now, but I did want to express that I
really
think Sound RTS is off to a good start.

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS Feedback and thoughts.

2008-01-19 Thread Cara Quinn
Hey Thomas, and Jean-Luc, and good morning All!!!... Happy
Saturday!...

thomas, wow, that's funny, I too, started playing Sound RTS this
past week! lol! Go figure! Great minds!...

anyway, you can actually create larger maps yourself, and I do
believe that you may also be able to play on multiplayer maps in
single player?... I haven't checked this out yet, as I myself, am
just starting tut 3 (having just started playing thursday)

As far as the interface goes, I tend to agree with you, however I
do really like the fact of being able to travel the map using the
arrows. One thing I'd say though, is that the idea of the tab key is
really throwing me off in the sense that I'm expecting to be able to
control the element I tab to. I.E. tab to the town hall and be
controlling it. this is giving me pause a bit during gameplay, and is
something I'm really having to get used to...

It's just slowing me down a bit is all... smile

I also wish there was a way to reassign at least the action key as
it seems I'm always getting confused between switching the action and
targeting that action. lol! (partially the blonde thing lol!)

anyway, other than that, I find this game to be really great!
smile I especially like the cute lil sounds of the men building
buildings and chopping down trees! lol! It's way cute!

Jean-Luc, as Thomas has already said, this is also just an amazing
game in the sense of the whole strategy element, and how well you've
implemented it.

As I've said before, thanks very much for your time and effort in
this! YOU ROCK!!!...

Smiles,

Cara :)

 Hi Jean'Luc,
As a relatively new player of Sound RTS I would like to offer my
thoughts and feedback about Sound RTS. After nearly a week of
 playing I
have really grown to enjoy this game immensely. Though, there are
 afew
things I think would improve the game for those just playing in
 tootorial mode.
First, I really like the strategy elements the game provides. Not
 only
battle field tactics but having to plan ahead on how you are going to
finance the upgrades, army, and defences. It puts the gamer in a
position to ask if he/she wants to upgrade to a castle or build
something else more immediately useful instead. It is elements like
 this

that makes the game truly above most Audio games out there. Second, I
have beaten all three tootorials, and I am left with the feeling what
next. Part of my disappointment in beating the game is
 the
game currently only has a 3 by 3 playing area. Once you use up all
 the
gold and wood in your posession and crush the enemies in the northern
areas there is no continuation from there. I would personally like to
see a much larger playing map, such as 10 by 10, with the ability to
build both sides up to having castles, dragons, and catipolts, and
having full skaled engagements on a larger skale in tootorial mode.
Perhaps this is possible in online play, I don't know, but as someone
who is not always available for online play I'd like to see this
 become
 apart of the tootorial mode.
Third, as a personal preference I would like to be able to up and
 down
arrow through the menus rather than tab. I am not sure if anyone else
agrees with me but using arrows rather than tab seams much more
 natural
to me than tabbing around the screen to find the map or tootorial I
want. I guess I'll stop here for now, but I did want to express
 that I
 really
think Sound RTS is off to a good start.

thomas, wow, that's funny, I too, started playing Sound RTS this
past week! lol!

I.E. tab to the town hall and be
controlling it. this is giving me pause a bit during gameplay, and
 is
something I'm really having to get used to...

Hi Cara,
I know how to make a dragon in Sound RTS but the problem is finding
enough gold to do it. Given the restrictions in the tootorials you can't
really get enough gold to do it unless you cut spending on your army and
put all that money into a castle and a dragon layer. Even then by ht
etime you can create a dragon you are out of cash or you are being
swarmed by enemies without money to put up the best defense.

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS Question for Mac

2008-01-19 Thread SoundMUD
Thanks, I didn't know that. So, on a Mac, the F 9 to F 11 keys are
used by expose, and F 12 by the dashboard. From something I have read
in another forum, for example World of Warcraft replaces these
shortcuts when it starts and restores them when it stops. I won't
probably do this, for it is probably a bit complicated (and if the
game isn't closed correctly, the keys are not restored in certain
cases) and not absolutely needed for this game.

One of these days I will put the key bindings in a configuration file,
so they will be customizable. But there is probably already a solution
for the F 10 key: during a game, Control C and Alt F 4 might have the
same effect than F 10. Try them.

In the future, I will add alternate keys for the F 9 to F 12 keys.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the feedback!

Yes, the maps are really small. I especially realize this today
because many bigger multiplayer maps have been made since the day I
released the 3 single player maps.

Even if you don't play multiplayer games, you can play on the
multiplayer maps against the computer. This way you will have bigger
maps to explore and much more resources to gather. But you have

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS Feedback and thoughts.

2008-01-19 Thread SoundMUD
(I have accidentally sent the email too early. Here is the rest of the message.)

Playing in a single player map is different from playing in a
multiplayer map against the computer: the former is an asymmetric map,
with a relatively still opponent, except for scripted attacks ; the
latter is a balanced map, played against an always too strong or too
weak computer. So I hope it will be possible to write custom single
player maps with scripted attacks (it's the more viable solution for
single player games). I will try to write another bigger single player
map as an exercise.

About the 4 arrow keys for the menus (down and up to select, right to
confirm, left to cancel), they already work even if the help message
doesn't mention them. I will probably keep only the arrow keys. I am
about to use more complex menus or forms, and I will have to define
new keys for that. Maybe something players are used to? Maybe the
default Windows keys? I don't know yet.

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS Feedback and thoughts.

2008-01-19 Thread SoundMUD
Hi Cara,

About the game interface, there are at least 2 kinds of selection:
target and control, and there is a third selection: the order to give.
Maybe some keys should be swapped, so it would be more logic, from
left to right you would have fro example: select a unit, then select a
target. But the order menu key is not often used once you know the
backspace key that gives most of the default orders that you need to
attack, repair or move. Difficult...

So allowing the customization of the key bindings might be a solution,
for I have already experimented a lot on the key layout, and I am
still not really satisfied.

Re: [Audyssey] Sound RTS and Python 2.4.4

2008-01-16 Thread SoundMUD
Hi Cara, thanks for your mail!

The zip archive doesn't really contain the source code but only
compiled files. For the moment I won't release the source code, but
it may not be necessary anyway, because I have just managed to build
the usual SoundRTS executable for Windows without using the source
files but only the compiled files. I had to modify soundrts.py to do
this (so it would not work with the current release, but I will make
some changes for a future release). This way, it will be probably
possible to build a .app file for the Mac, using py2app and the same
setup.py file I have written for py2exe, because the 2 tools are very
similar.

jean'Luc, thanks very much for your note. am installing a 2.4

python files in the zip archive for Mac yet, but if they are the
actual source code, I could try to compile a .app file for Mac which
wouldn't require the extra libs if such a thing is possible currently
in Python as I believe it is for windows...

Now I'm curious, I suppose I'll look into this and see what I can
 find?...

I must add that the optional sounds may disable some features (like the pitch

Hi,
For a full and better experience install the 9f. Especially for
multiplayer games. Then go in the options menu and choose the pack

you have to quit the single player menu and enter again to play the
next chapter in the tutorial (fixed in the future 9g).
