Hi Phil.

This all depends on which compression the installer uses, though multiple
layers of compression rarely makes sense.

I've done an experiment with zip and 7z (aka lzma2). Zip makes the file 90%
its origional size, while lzma2 yields 80%.

 Hi Ryan,
Sound files do not compress very much when zipped, and usually
creating the install file does compress everything to as small of a
 download file size as possible.

Hi Hayden,
Well, personally I do notice some reduction in quality. It is very
slight, but it takes some of the pitch out of the sounds, and it isn't
quite as sharp/clear as a *.wav file. I suppose the fact I am a
musician, am use to listening to tone and pitch, something like that
is more apparent to me than a lay person.
At any rate it isn't just audio quality. I also decided to go with
*.wav files for the simple fact if I use any type of compression
weather it be ogg, wma, wav, or xwma, whatever your program has to
decompress all those files during runtime, such as when loading a new
level, and therefore it is slower in loading the game levels, loading
voice messages, whatever. It isn't too noticable on a new duel core
system, but on an older 1 GHZ system, i happen to have laying around,
it took quite a long time to decompress those sounds in real time.

size possible.

Hi Charles,
Well, one purpose of using any zip tool is simply to pack multipl
files into one single archive that can be downloaded. If you are going
to use an archive like zip, bz2, gz, whatever you might as well find
the one with the best compression as well.
It is not just the people downloading the file we have to worry about.
I have to use hard drive sspace on the server to store my files and
while I have a max account that space isn't exactly infinite. Plus I
am given a certain amount of bandwidth per month and if I go over that
limit I either have to suspend downloads for a few days until my
bandwidth gets reset on the first of the next month or pay the extra
bandwidth fees. So it still pays to shrink the files size down for
the person hosting the files as well as giving the end users a quicker
and smaller download.

Hi Zack,
Thanks for the suggestion. Next time I think I'll definitely try using
bzip2 to compress the file. As you say gzip isn't very good.
Unfortunately, I'm about 75% through uploading the Linux MOTA beta 14
file, and I'd hate to stop it, rezip the thing, and upload again after
it has been going for nearly an hour or so. So next time I'll
definitely experiment more with compression sizes and archive formats
before defaulting to gzip.

Actually, Inno Setup, the Windows setup program i use, has its own
built-in compression which is pretty good. It cut the install down
from close to 350 MB to around 170 MB which is fairly good. I'm afraid
you can't get much better than that for compression.
As for the Linux side I'm still looking for the best compression
format. I used gzip this time, but found out its compression ratio
isn't very good. I'm going to look at bz2 as well as a couple of other
options and see if I can shave off some of the file ssize off the
Linux install. Instead of 245 MB maybe knock it down to 225 MB or
something like that. Every little bit helps I guess.

Cheers!

Hi Phil.

This all depends on which compression the installer uses, though multiple
layers of compression rarely makes sense.

I've done an experiment with zip and 7z (aka lzma2). Zip makes the file 90%
its origional size, while lzma2 yields 80%.

Sound files do not compress very much when zipped, and usually creating

Re: [Audyssey] mota download size

2010-10-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Hayden,
Well, personally I do notice some reduction in quality. It is very
slight, but it takes some of the pitch out of the sounds, and it isn't
quite as sharp/clear as a *.wav file.

Hi,
Well, yes and no. If we are comparing it to the average audio game
size it would be quite big. However, as it has been pointed out before
most mainstream games are extremely huge compared to Mysteries of the
Ancients. I think Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness is something like 2 GB
fully installed. The latest Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider Underworld,
is even bigger yet Star Wars Empire at War is also pretty huge. It is
something like 4 GB fully installed. So MOTA isn't anywhere near those
kinds of sizes..
