Re: [Audyssey] recovering game information
Hi Tom. One thing I have noticed about alsorts of information technology issues, is that they fall into what the philosopher and logician Witkenstein called "A language game" This is a situation where so many unfamiliar and specific terms are used, only those in the know, those in the game so to speak, can understand them, and those outside the game have litle notion of what's going on. I've used windows for a very long time, and thus am familiar with things like what an exe file does, what a registry key is, what archives are etc. I'm certainly no expert, but I would say i'm familiar enough with the technology to have a reasonable discussion with other people. With Lynux though, it seems that all the processes change, and with them the terminology. Thus, when reading Lynux instructions, intended for advanced lynux users who are familiar with all of the terminology, I'm simply unfamiliar with the game. It's much like reading any advanced text book on any subject, there is so much specific terminology that only workers in that subject know, it becomes hugely difficult for anyone outside to understand without a direct dictionary. This does however make things rather inaccessible to those outside the game, which was actually Witkenstein's point. I think generally I wouldn't be comfortable with lynux until I'd had chance to play with a lynux system for a while, learn some of the terminology and try things out. However, obviously sinse that would mean completely abandoning windows and everything I have had experience of thus far, it's not a move I'd be too willing to make, and I imagine I'm probably not the only person in this position which might explain why people stil stick to using windows. Had I enough money to simply buy a new machine to play with, I'd probably try lynux, but as it is, I can only afford one desktop and one laptop, so wouldn't be keen on switching to something which I'd then have to learn to use without an alternative. I will remember though, and if I ever get the chance to play with a lynux system, as at one point I had a fairly long play with Jaws, i'll try it just for the experience. Beware the grue! Re: [Audyssey] recovering game information
Hi Dark, Last message on this topic, but you are right about terminology. Its often times not that the technology or in this case operating system is so different from what you already know, many concepts cross over, but if you don't have a decent understanding of the terminology being used its easy to be confused and thus associate the technology as harder, more difficult, or more confusing than you already know. For example, lets compare the Linux graphical environment to Windows. Unlike Windows where you get a single common shell and desktop environment Linux has a number of graphical user interfaces called desktops that look different, operate differently, and some have specific applications that only work with that specific graphical desktop and/or toolkit. This is, I,E. one of the differences, between Linux distributions. One distribution might use the Gnome desktop, another KDE, and another Unity. All of the desktops, graphical user interfaces are certainly different, but they all have things in common that is similar to Microsoft Windows as explained below. On Windows you might have a number of icons that launch a program from the desktop or Start Menu. On Linux most of the desktop environments call them launchers, and although it is a different name its still basically nothing more than an icon. Different name but same function. Diddo for the Start Menu. On Windows when you press control+escape it opens the Start Menu. On Linux pressing alt+f1 will open a menu. In the Gnome desktop environment the main menu is called the Panel Menu. In Unity it is called the launcher Menu. Same basic concept different name. All in all though all graphical desktop environments weather we are talking Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, or the Linux desktop environments all share common ideas, concepts, and even terminology that you should understand once you see it in action so to speak. Linux has all the normal things dialog boxes, push buttons, check boxes, radio buttons, list boxes, context menus, and all the rest. Just slightly different from what you already know and use every day. Last but least you don't have to buy a different computer to try Linux. Many distributions such as Ubuntu can be installed side by side with Windows using a Windows swap pertition so you can switch back and forth between them. There are also versions of Linux that can run directly off of an inexpensive thumb drive or USB memory stick. Although, it is slow, Vinux and a number of other distributions can be run live directly off the cd. Its slower than installing it, but you can run and demo the OS with speech, internet access, etc right off the cd if it detects your hardware correctly. I've demoed Linux to a lot of people just by letting them run it live off the cd drive. Cheers! Hi. I like the current voice, and I like his speech rate. I find it very much less difficult to understand than Akapella Heather was. What might end up happening is there will be multiple different english soundpacks created by you or gamers to give the game a different voice. You plan to try and support foreign languages by just having them recorded in different languages, you could put a downloads area on the mota page for obtaining other languages, and among those might be alternative english packs too. This reminds me of how topspeed handles things. Too, you could make the ability to switch languages into the game, like topspeed has done. That wouldn't be necessary though as long as we can delete the speech folder and replace it with another one we have. Sent with Thunderbird 3.1.10 portable. Therefore they want the voice slowed down so they can understand the game better. That's understandable, but how slow is too slow and how fast is too fast for them. I do understand where they are coming from. I had some French and German in high school and college, and although I know the basics of the languages I don't speak them every day, and if I were to actually talk to someone going 90 miles a minute in French or German half of it would get passed me as I can't process it that fast. That said, as most of the users do know English I think they could probably get by with it set to the current rate. It actually sounds a bit slow to me, but I'm comfortable with the current rate personally. On 6/25/11, Karl Belanger wrote: Personally, I think the voice is fine as is. If enough people say the voice is to fast and you decide to slow it down, I think the simplest way to determine the best speed would be to record a few samples at different rates, and see which people like most, or another possibility would be to estimate the rate a person would say the same rate and set it for that. Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Voice Output
Hi Jim, In deed. None of the U.S. English voices come close to speaking Klingon. However, If I switch Eloquence to German and type them in it does a passible job of speaking them. I would imagine that is because the Klingon language has a Germanic style of speech. Especially, with the way the letter h is used in words. English sinths just don't have the right programming to pronounce those kinds of words. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] recovering game information
Hi Jim, I'm afraid not. The Basic programming languages never really were that popular with Unix and Linux developers. The closest thing to Basic on Linux would be Python which is fairly easy to learn, and is the closest thing to an entry level programming language for Linux. The majority of applications and tools are written in C or C++ with some increasing use of the Open Java JDK for Linux. I think that is due to the fact Linux has never really been popular with the average home user or amateur programmer like yourself. Linux is, and has always been, primarily used by IT professionals and has a much stronger market on business machines rather than with personal computer users. Although, that is changing somewhat the fact still remains Linux's primary core of users are highly trained professionals who may have skills in C, C++, Java, and may have professional training in one or more of those languages. As a result they never really had a need for a Basic programming language per say. That's not to say their aren't some good alternatives though. As I mentioned above Python is fairly easy to learn, and you can do quite a lot with Python these days. There are a number of free amateur games for Linux written in Python using the cross-platform PyGame API, and it is totally possible to add text to speech support using PyTTS for Linux. Basically, all the necessary components are in place if you or anyone else wanted to write games in Python. In fact, the RS Games Client for Linux is written in Python, speaks text via ESpeak, and so on. SoundRTS is written in Python, uses PyGame, and although it takes some fiddling to install the correct dependencies it is a fairly decent game written in pure Python as well. Point being that if you were ever thinking of a replacement for VB Python for Windows, Linux, or Mac is probably the next best thing. As for myself personally if I weren't a C++ man I'd probably choose Python. It is simple to learn, is quite powerful, and has been used for everything from simple shell scripts to full blown apps like the Orca screen reader. More importantly, for you I think, is that Python doesn't require any type of formal training or education. It was intentionally designed to be used by amateur developers, and you don't have to worry about many of the advanced types of programming concepts like data types, pointers, and so on that you would have to know in a language like C/C++. [Audyssey] Alien Outback problem
Hello List, I have a problem with the game alien outback. When I start the game it says error! Runtime 6 overflo. Ok button. I purchased the alien outback game in 2002 on CD so it is version 1.7, but there is a new version from dracomess. ESP Pinball 1.4, monkey business 1.9.1 Dynaman 2.x, and ESP pinball xtreme and pinball party pack run fine. I am using windows 7 with a 3 GB hard drive. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Alien Outback problem
Hello sky. firstly, I'd recommend downloading the newest version from the draconis site. I know they rejiggered several of their games such as monkey business to run on post xp machines, but I'm not sure if they did alien outback or not. Eitherway, it's best to check sinse it's certain that the version you have on that old cd will not be optimized for modern windows. then, quite often when someone gets runtime errors in windows 7 trying to run older games, it's just because of lack of components. Try installing jim's winkit file, which often fixes these sorts of problems. Btw shane, I believe Sky meant 3 gb of ram, not 3 gb of harddrive space, sinse you can buy 3 gb memory sticks, a 3 gb harddrive would be pretty pointless, especially with windows 7 that I believe takes up a good 1 gb of space all by itself anyway. Beware the grue! dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
