[gentoo-user] Konsole colours have changed

2019-04-26 Thread Peter Humphrey
Hello list,

The recent kde-apps upgrade changed the colours used by konsole, In
particular, the black background is no longer black, but a sort of washed-out
charcoal grey. I compared the /usr/share/konsole/Linux.colorscheme file with
an earlier version, but they were the same

Is there somewhere else I can check?

[gentoo-user] konsole: strange behaviour regarding profile

2017-03-05 Thread Alexander Puchmayr
Hi there,

I use to have several different KDE/plasma activities configured, each with
different folder view widgets with desktop icons inside for the applications
which I use on these activities. Especially, there are some icons with

Exec=konsole -e slogin alex@server

to have quick access to my server; other icons have root@router, root@server,
root@laptop, etc.

The strange behaviour is now, when I start konsole from the launcher (i.e.
with no -e argument) , it opens a konsole with the last successful login and
not, as I expect, on the local system as my current local user.

I could even reproduce it by opening the launcher and type
konsole -e slogin alex@server
As expected, a konsole with login as alex@server is opened.
Next, start konsole without any arguments, and slogin alex@server is executed
automatically.

How can I turn this off and get the behaviour that konsole without -e
arguments opens a window with a simple shell at the local machine?

Best regards
Alex

I really can't give proper answer to your whinge-rant without at least
the output of emerge with -t

The bulk of those packages are probably kde frameworks and plasma. It's
hard to run konsole-5 without them. You're getting sound because that's
quite a normal to put on a desktop, and ruby because some package in
world is a ruby script. And the packages are lots of small ones, very
few huge monolithic packages left in Gentoo's KDE ebuilds. And yes, you
very much CAN pick and choose kde-apps individually, but you don't get
to choose if you want to install the deps or not

Konsole:4 is moved to kde-sunset, enable that overlay and get things

I did not add udev-mount on 3 different machines, only one of which runs the
full KDE enchilada. That's the one that seems to be experiencing some
problems lately - like printing causes the *printer* to crash. Also
occasionally the desktop will not load sitting there at the last login icon of
kdm.

Perhaps I should add it and see if it makes a difference.

I don't think that's it. I deliberately tried leaving it out to see what
happened and I lost my Konsoles, but this box has a separate /usr mounted
by initramfs. The udev-mount script mounts /dev, so the problem would
have been caused by a missing device node.

Same here on two different boxes, ~x86 and ~amd64. I'm on LXDE,
~/.lxde_errors reports that rxvt could not start due to lack of
pseudo-terminals. Issuing
   # mount /dev/pts
by hand temporarily solves the issue.

A related issue might be that during the boot I see that /dev/shm could
not be mounted. /dev/pts and /dev/shm are both mounted by
/etc/init.d/devfs, maybe that's failing?

The last emerge pulled in

2012-10-23 Thread Andrew Lowe

Hi all,
I did an "emerge -NuD world", it nearly finished, 2 or 3 big files to
go, when I decided it was bed time. I killed the build and went to bed.
This morning I can't now fire up Konsole, which I use as my terminal,
XTerm or UXTerm.

In more detail, I get the Konsole window, the menu is there and I can
open other tabs etc, but instead of the command prompt, I just get a
small grey blob in the top left hand corner. Hitting return does not get
me any carriage returns.

XTerm gives me the bouncing icon next to the cursor for a period of
time then disappears.

UXTerm gives me a small window with the message:

"uxterm tried unsuccessfully to use locale en_US.UTF-8 by setting
$LC_CTYPE to "en_US.UTF-8.

and that's all. I hit the OK button on the window and it all disappears.

Last night Konsole was fine, I did the emerge through it, but now
nothing. I didn't do revded-rebuild or etc-update as I usually do after
a world emerge.

Does anyone know what's wrong and how I can get out of this bind.
Something without having to resorting to rescue disks would be good but
if all else fails.

Thanks for any thoughts,
Andrew

Hello everybody,

since upgrading zsh to 4.3.17 I have a problem with Konsole 4.8.0.

ctrl-c does not quit a running program. It ends su -/sux - sessions.

log in as user
start konsole
su -
ping www.google.com
hit ctrl-c
su-session quit. user again, ping still running.

Before I open a bug, has anybody else seen this too?

Ok theres probably a better way to do this, but heres goes.

create a bash script with what you want to run ie (emerge --sync).

now start konsole with konsole with
konsole -e /bin/bash --rcfile .

alternativly you can create a new konsole profile and add that to the command
section and use that profile for this.

Thanks, no I did not know about this script.

I checked it out but I prefer to kick the sync off myself (syncing
really slows down the computer). Besides, I have my own little script
that does everything the way I want it. :-)

Ah, the secret sauce is the quotes. Google had told me not to use
quotes. I must have misunderstood. Still, I thought I had tried
something like that.

Just a suggestion: Do you know the porticron script? Combined with a
proper setup of ssmtp, it will sync you portage tree daily (in the

[gentoo-user] [konsole] How to run a command, then leave the shell open?

2012-02-21 Thread Hilco Wijbenga
Hi all,

Every morning I start konsole, type "emerge --sync", and then go do
other stuff. Some time later I look at the output and usually run
"emerge ... world". I would like to automate that a bit more.

I can use kpart to start konsole on a particular desktop so that's
easy. What I can't seem to get working is the "$SHELL --login" +
"emerge --sync" part.

If I run "konsole --noclose -e emerge --sync" then I get the output I
want but I don't get a prompt. If I run "konsole -e $SHELL --login"
then I get the prompt but, obviously, no emerge output.

How can I combine these two? I would like konsole to run emerge --sync
and then leave a prompt open. Just like what would happen if I did it
all manually. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Hilco

That's what happens for me with Terminal, but not with Konsole.

There's no 'Default Applications' in my 'systemsettings'.
That mb because I don't have the whole of KDE installed,
as I use Fluxbox as my desktop/window manager.
The 'Default Applications' setting sb stored somewhere: any idea where ?

Anyone else have ideas ?

Konsole should open the default browser set in KDE.
You can check that in systemsettings -> Workspace Appearance and
Behavior -> Default Applications -> Web Browser

IIRC some browsers allow you to 'set them as default' somewhere in their
menu (usually as an annoying popup at startup, until you disable it ;)
which should work with kde.. (at least i think it worked the last time i
tested it with chromium... but i mostly set it up manualy)

I'm running 99.99% stable here so takes that for what it is. Here,
with Firefox open I run in konsole

eix ardour

and then right click on the ardour.org link and choose Open Link. I
get the Ardour web site in the running version of Firefox.

With Firefox not running KDE/konsole still opens Firefox.

[gentoo-user] Konsole question

2012-01-30 Thread Philip Webb
When an URL appears in a console, it is usually possible to R-click,
then choose 'open link' & a browser(-tab) opens for that link.
With Xfce's Terminal, it opens in a running instance of Firefox.
With KDE's Konsole, it opens Konqueror, which I don't usually have running.

However, since around KDE 4.7.1 & continuing in 4.8.0 ,
the version of Konqueror which opens is the file browser,
which I never otherwise use & which is useless for this purpose.
Clearly, what sb opened is Konqueror in browser mode.

Has anyone else encountered this problem ?
I've tried to find where the browser to open is configured, but can't.
Have I missed a setting somewhere or is this a KDE bug I should report ?

Thanks, Dale. I'll try this. Don't know if I'll get to it tonight
unfortunately, it was back to work to day and I have a bunch of stuff to
do tonight.

To everyone else, thanks ... I'll keep googling to see if I can figure
this out and I'll shout again if I need assistance.

a) we allready know where the problem hides - thanks to ~/.xession-errors your
first stop when some X based app has problems.

b) strace will drown you in output.

c) in this case I have my doubts that the output would be helpfull at all
(because I strace'd Konsole ;) )

I'm just wondering: can a tool like strace (or similar) be helpul in
diagnose the problem?
Maybe it could detect if konsole is trying to access a file that has
too strict permissions, couldn't it? Just wondering, I never really
used strace.

I'd be willing to try this, but what is smartctl a part of?

"smartctl -a" asks the hard disk device for diagnostic information.

Yes, but when I ran 'smartctl -a /dev/sda' it tells me the command isn't
found. I did a search for this command and it was found in
/usr/share/bash-completion/ but if I run it (and it is executable to
owner (root)), using the full path to the command, it tells me the
command isn't found. I also tried creating a symlink to it in /usr/bin
and I get the message:
/usr/bin/smartctl: line 3: have: command not found.

Regards,

Colleen

emerge smartmontools

then when that is done, do this:

smartctl -t long /dev/sd

When you do that, it should print a message that tells when the test
will complete. It is usually a 24 hour format thing too. This can run
while the drive is in use too. Sometime after that time, run this command:

smartctl -l selftest /dev/sd

That should tell you the results of the test. If it says it passed,
this is good. If it reports a problem, well it is not good. If you are
lucky, it will be like a recent problem I had and reformatting will fix
it. It was a weird problem but beats replacing a drive.

Hope that helps.

so devfs script is ok and runs on boot. consolekit also runs on boot. You
could try and put a devpts line into fstab (please google it, I am too tired

Hmm ...

They are writeable here (with 1 urxvt running):

/dev/pts:
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 rootroot 0 Jan 2 22:27 .
drwxr-xr-x 15 rootroot 3960 Jan 2 22:28 ..
crw--w 1 michael tty 136, 0 Jan 2 22:36 0
crw--w 1 michael tty 136, 1 Jan 2 22:51 1

and with without the writeable bit for group when I also fire a konsole:

$ ls -la /dev/pts
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 rootroot 0 Jan 2 22:27 .
drwxr-xr-x 15 rootroot 3960 Jan 2 22:28 ..
crw--w 1 michael tty 136, 0 Jan 2 22:36 0
crw--w 1 michael tty 136, 1 Jan 2 22:52 1
crw--- 1 michael tty 136, 2 Jan 2 22:55 2

So, the konsole seems to run with more restrictions than urxvt?

/dev/pts is root:root here. The files within it are user:tty, but they
are neither group readable nor writeable, so the group ownership is
possibly not that relevant.

I'm not running consolekit here, but I suspect the ownership switching
you're seeing relates to either that or policykit (which I note in
your kdelibs USE flags).

I just noticed that despite the fact that I changed the group of /dev/pts
to tty (I did this as root), it didn't stick - it reverted back to
colleen. So how do I fix this?

I didn't do any edits to fstab - the file was the one I created on the
initial install on this computer a couple of months ago - computer is
reasonable new.

The problem didn't have anything to do with a reboot. I was trying to
get MySQL to recognize a database that I had created on my laptop and I
was following along with the documentation on the MySQL site. I had
konsole open looking for stuff - I copied the database files that I
wanted to use in the location of the my.cnf file. I noticed that I
didn't have konsole open at one point - thought that I had closed it and
when I started it up again, there was no prompt, only the black block
cursor.

I did create a new user and it didn't help. I've tried every suggestion
made in this thread to no avail. For example, I changed the group of
/dev/pts to tty as others indicated that that was what it was supposed
to be.

I suspect Colleen did change something, but it didn't take effect until
a reboot. I've been caught like that before now, make a seemingly
insignificant change then get bitten a few weeks later when I reboot into
a new kernel and blame the kernel.

I doubt it will make a difference in this case as it it down to
permissions in /etc, but it never hurts to try.

Good point, but how does that fstab entry appear if she hasn't done
updates? I suppose she might have been editing in fstab and made a
mistake? If she was editing she should certainly check it out.

Reading back through this thread I don't see whether Colleen tried my
suggestion about a creating a new user. My thought was that some KDE
config file somewhere got corrupted and a new user would not have that
same issue.

What about fstab? An entry in there could override the openrc setting.

sys-apps/openrc installs the /etc/init.d/devfs script which as Volker has
explained sets the /dev/pts ownership.

As long as Coleen has not set up the /devfs in her /etc/fstab a remerge of
openrc followed by a reboot should put things into place.

Since there were no updates/upgrades immediately prior to this error, this
could well have been a result of fs corruption, or memory problems. It would
make sense to check what smartctl -a /dev/sda shows just in case.

On the off chance you missed a post-update message that came from (I
think) maybe a dbus update awhile back, try

emerge -1 gobject-introspection

and then restart dbus and/or reboot to test.

chown for the moment, and look at fstab - is there an entry? If not,
/etc/init.d/devfs should do the mounting, does it look like this:
"devpts /dev/pts 0755 ,gid=5,mode=0620 devpts"
?

and what abot /dev/ptmx?
does it look like the line from me or is there some root root stuff going on?
if the later chown that.

because xterm does not touch anything in /dev/pts

xterm uses /dev/ptmx
konsole uses /dev/ptmx and /dev/pts/X
now look at the permissions of ptmx and pts/*

ls -lh /dev/ptmx
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 5, 2 2. Jan 01:54 /dev/ptmx

and for pts I posted above/look at mark's output. Group setting is important.

 Mysterious thread Colleen.

Possibly the font file itself is messed up? I See you've tried other
things in the Konsole config. Maybe try that?

Settings->Appearance and then near the bottom try changing the font
size, checking and unchecking the Smooth fonts options, and which font
 is being used?

 Good luck,

Best I can tell here they are created and destroyed as konsole is
opened and closed. Open a bunch of konsoles and see for yourself.

Possibly konsole is now doing it wrong whereas xterm by itself is
doing it right?

 I dunno much. I dunno nut'un. I just dunno. :-)

I tend to agree Volker.

Collen - on my system the pts entries are part of the tty group:

mark@c2stable ~ $ ls -al /dev/pts/
total 0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Jan 1 07:55 .
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 5080 Jan 1 15:07 ..
crw--w 1 mark tty 136, 0 Jan 1 09:58 0

crw--- 1 mark tty 136, 2 Jan 1 16:31 2
mark@c2stable ~ $

Yours seemed to be assigned to you as a group and not tty.

should look like this:
ls -hl /dev/pts
insgesamt 0
crw--w 1 tty 136, 0 30. Dez 21:37 0
crw--- 1tty 136, 1 2. Jan 01:20 1

crw--- 1 tty 136, 4 1. Jan 21:31 4

so the question is, where did it get borked. To clear something up, what did
you emerge in the time before this happend? Also, useflags for kdelibs please.

yeah because something sets the permissions wrong.

>
> I also tried googling, but haven't found anything that made any sense to me.

try googling pts permissions.

When you cat mtab, do you find something like this:
/etc/mtab:
devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,nosuid,noexec,relatime,gid=5,mode=620 0 0

is the devfs initscript run? does it look ok?
(having this:
devpts /dev/pts 0755 ,gid=5,mode=0620 devpts
)

Since reboots don't fix it, it doesn't sound like a starvation issue.
Since your /dev/pts is mounted and seems to have useful permissions,
it doesn't sound like a permissions issue.
Since xterm works, it *definitely* shouldn't be a permissions issue
relating to ptys; I'd expect xterm would have had the same issue.

Still, with the error 'Can't open a pseudo teletype', code and
activity relating to ptys are where I'd keep looking.

If it were me, at this point I'd try running konsole under strace,
direct strace's output to a text file, and then grep that file for
anything relating to /dev/pts, look at the error codes (or
lackthereof, or lack of matching lines), and try figuring things out
from there.

Tried this, but it didn't resolve the issue. I also tried re-installing
kdelibs, which didn't resolve the issue either. :-(

Starting konsole out of xterm results in the same issue - no prompt.

From .xsession-errors the following related to konsole was provided, but
I have no idea how to go about fixing this:

 konsole(8283)/kdecore (KPty/K3Process) KPty::open: Can't open a pseudo
 teletype
konsole(8283) Konsole::Pty::flowControlEnabled: Unable to get flow
 control status, terminal not connected.

Since my last response, I have checked that /dev/pts is mounted and it
is. The console-kit-daemon appears to be running. I checked
permissions of /dev/pts - they look okay, but I'm not sure what they
should be because I've never had an issue like this before. This is
what they are:

I have rebooted multiple times to no avail.

I also tried googling, but haven't found anything that made any sense to me.

Also, have you tried making a new user, logging that user in for the
first time and checking if konsole works correctly?

Possibly one of your .kde4 config files got messed up?

Mysterious thread Colleen.

Possibly the font file itself is messed up? I See you've tried other
things in the Konsole config. Maybe try that?

Settings->Appearance and then near the bottom try changing the font
size, checking and unchecking the Smooth fonts options, and which font
is being used?

Good luck,

is consolekit still running? does the problem persist after a reboot?

In response, konsole was working just find earlier today - I had a
command prompt and everything. I had to install xterm, but on install
I could run xterm and it provides me with a command prompt.

No updates - konsole was working less than 15 minutes prior to sending

Bingo.

well, check that /dev/pts is mounted. Did you have any consolekit, udev, dbus
updates? Are the permissions set correctly? have you recompiled kdelibs?

But this is exactly your problem - google for it.

I have no idea how to go about fixing this:

konsole(8283)/kdecore (KPty/K3Process) KPty::open: Can't open a pseudo

so what happens when you start konsole out of xterm? Any messages? Do you find

Looks like something in Konsole broke. If deleting the config files
didn't fix it, I'd try a recompile and see if it helps. Check your USE
flags too just in case you notice something there that got changed.

Other than that, I'm not sure what else to try. It works here and has
been for a good while and I updated yesterday.

I checked all the color schemes. However, I doubt that it is that.
Konsole was working - I was trying to get a previously created database
recognized in mysql and while I was going through the documentation,
konsole was working. Now, all I get is a black square where my command
 prompt should be.

Make a backup of and then delete or rename the konsole config files in:

~/.kde4/share/config/konsolerc
~/.kde4/share/apps/konsole/*

Maybe something in there got hosed.

I can't type anything in the konsole window (in KDE). When I exit kde
by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and type echo $PS1, I get output similar to what
you have posted above (PS1='\[\033[01;31m\]\u@\h \[\033[01;34m\]\w \$
\[\033[00m\]' ). I don't recall exactly what my output is because the
only way I can get a command prompt is by exiting kde.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling konsole to no avail.

Hmmm, are you talking some custom setup using 'PS1=' sort of thing?
That is in:

/etc/bash/bashrc

For reference, I have this:

PS1='\[\033[01;31m\]\u@\h \[\033[01;34m\]\w \$ \[\033[00m\]'

and that gives me this:

root@fireball / #

The path is shown but I am at /. That works the same on a console as it
does on a Konsole. Is that what you are talking about? If it is, here
is some neato info:

If it's empty, you'll want to fix it in $HOME/.bashrc.

If you're not seeing *anything* when you type, I'd suggest checking
your configured color scheme.

Hi,

I seem to have lost the command prompt in konsole and can't figure out
how to get it back. I did google this, but didn't see anything
relevant. Any ideas?

Thanks and Happy New Year.

i know that is the last option. but, since i did not have this issue

hi,

my system is gentoo amd64, kd 4.3, compiz. i just updated the world.
in konsole, no matter if the system is busy or not, the screen do not
refresh sometimes. i will have to move the window, or select some
content in the konsole to force it refresh.

my graphic card is nvidia. i did not have this problem before.

That's odd - I get exactly the converse impression - black lettering on
white is less easy to pick out.

On the other hand, my eyes always have been a bit strange.

If you were using an oldish crt I would suggest that is "blooming" -
lots of white in the picture increase electron beam current which
enlarges the picture somewhat. Black backgrounds are in reverse. But
you are seeing this on lcds as well, so it looks like an "optical
illusion", like the old favourite of which line is longer:

Me too, and to me they all look more or less the same :-) In my case, I
have 7 years worth of fixing the things and critically examining the
display quality when calibrating and adjusting them. I've developed an
automatic gain control in my head that compensates for differences :-)

One of the things I don't like about black background is that on all
monitors
the background seems to "crowd" the glyphs -- the markings seems more
slender than when the colors are reversed. With small fonts (I like high
resolution settings for other reasons), this makes the lettering hard to
read.

I'm glad it seems so, since I teach computer science at the university
level. :o)
But I was hoping to get samples and suggestions of how others have dealt
with this. I've been muttering under my breath about this for a few years
now and I thought it likely that others may have taken action.

As for vision: I have such an exam yearly. I always see the numerals in
their
samples, and nobody's ever mentioned color insensitivity. Nevertheless, it's
possible it's vision-related since it works this way for me on all monitors,
and
in my work I see a lot of monitors.

The man page provides the list of variables and attributes that can be
used. Basically, the variable defines the message type (BAD, INFORM,
GOOD, etc) and the attributes define how to display the text for that
variable (basically, fg and bg color, and other attributes like
underlined, blinking, bold, etc.).

I have something like this in my color.map:

yellow=fuchsia #This maps yellow to fuchsia
WARN=fuchsia #Warnings are now in fuchsia instead of yellow
MERGE_LIST_PROGRESS=fuchsia #Dito

Instead of fuchsia you can use it's hex-value 0xFF55FF.
The colors and the hex equivalents are all defined in
/usr/lib/portage/pym/output.py where you can look them up!

For a good explaination of ANSI color codes and escape sequences you may
look here [1]!

My question could have been clearer, I meant that the relative contrast
between fore and background colours using Linux Colours is OK so I can
see grey on black fine, and the difference between a colour and the
same one bold is also obvious.

I've used some cheaper crts that were just gross, and in the past found
that the quality of LCDs were highly variable and mostly unrelated to
price (this seems to have settled now though).

You seem to know what to do in most cases and how to achieve it, so I
don't know if my favourite colour schemes will help you much. However,
have you considered an eye test for colour sensitivity? A large number
of males are under-sensitive to certain colours and it's apparently
hard for the person to detect it in themselves.

My gentoo is using a Westinghouse flat screen with mid-range
brightness and contrast.
