 Wha?

Actually that book was written based on a development snapshot of
GIMP. I find it to be a very useful book IMHO. I'm not sure how
relevant it will continue to be though, based on the fact that the
author really seems to have jumped the gun in regards to the GIMP 2.4
 release. [...]

Many users and developers were hoping for GIMP 2.4 to be released
around the end of summer last year. Alas, that didn't happen
because it took a long time to fix some nasty bugs, then it was
decided to include some new features because the release was not
ready anyway, then more bugs popped in, then it also took a while
to fix them, then even more features were added, even more bugs
were discovered and fixed, and so on...

It is not surprising that the authors of some books were hoping
for 2.4 to be released earlier. Maybe they were a bit too
optimistic, but I wouldn't blame them for that.

Now that we already have the first release candidate with lots of
nice features (and a few bugs that have already been fixed), we
are finally getting very close to the official release of GIMP 2.4.

That is great news! Now I just hope it hasn't changed so much that my
nice full color gloss beginning GIMP book is full of lies! :)

Its more likely a plot by the publishing house to sell more books when you
release the second edition which covers the real GIMP 2.4 release. ;-)

Hi Dotan,

 Hi Gimp-user,

A friend sent me a link to a new GIMP book, The Artist's Guide to

in the Javascript book he was reading from the same publisher. The
 sample tutorial looked good.

 http://nostarch.com/frameset.php?startat=gimp

DC Very nice, the sample chapters were amazing. This seems to be written
DC for Gimp 2.2, but 2.4 will have significant changes. Can you (or the
DC author) address that issue?

That's a good question. I don't have the specific answer. The
searching I did on the web site and amazon, didn't seem to come right
out and say it. The Table of Contents starts out with, Looking Ahead
to GIMP 2.4. It is being published this year. Hhhmmm... Perhaps we
can get a response from the list.

Thank you.

The first part of the introduction in the book covers this. It took 2
1/3 years to get the book published, so starting with 2.2 seemed
reasonable at the time. Also, it will be some time before all the major
distributions get updated to the requirements for 2.4 and have those
distributions propogated to the general public. So even though 2.4 is
due soon, 2.2 isn't disappearing soon from a great many users desktops.

In the end, though, the changes for 2.4 don't greatly affect the
tutorials. Mostly what changes is the location of menu options, which I
believe I've addressed in the book but will update on the web site as I
become aware of the errata. New features in 2.4 are not used in the
tutorials (it's a 2.2 based text, after all) and none of the old
features used in the tutorials went away. Mostly those features just
changed slightly in appearance or work better under the hood in 2.4.

If you're interested in dicussing the book or issues related to the
GIMP, I set up a web site for the book:
http://www.graphics-muse.org/artistsguide/

The book should just about be ready for shipping from retailers. I was
just notified that my author copies will be sent soon.

[Gimp-user] new Gimp book, about time

2006-02-15 Thread Colin Brace
In the process of learning Gimp (ongoing project), I've wondered about
the absence of books dedicated to it, at least since 2001 or
thereabouts. I am therefore intrigued to (finally) see a new title,
now preannounced on Amazon.com:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1590595874/104-2820490-0282337

Humorous aside As a suggested purchase, Amazon pairs it with
O'Reilly's Pocket Reference (2000), documenting Gimp 1.2 /

Yes, I realize the author actively participates in this ML.

Though I realize there are many useful tutorials around, a
well-written, well-edited manual and reference work will be very
useful, and I look forward to seeing this work when it appears in
April.

Gimp is a moving target. An author of a 500 page book has to pick
a version or versions and write around those. On this list
many/most are not so much concerned with installation problems
but keeping up with the changes in the user interface and also
new features such as possible embryonic CMYK capabilities. So I
would be interested in a book built around some recent version,
if not 2.4 then at least 2.3xx. If someone comes up with a book
that is smaller, cheaper and more up to date I will buy it.

It is available in pdf form which is a big help. I am probably
going to print out the main portion.

Three questions:

1.There is no index in the pdf copy. Is one available elsehere?

2. The current edition is dated December and is current as of
2.2.x apparently. That is excellent. Now, is there any indication
of when a 2.4 based version would be available? In other words if
2.4 came out in, say, March 2006 in what month would an updated
manual be expected?

3. I still have in a ring binder the 900 plus page manual written
by Karin and Olof Kylander. Is the current manual related to that
manual or are they separate publications?

I don't know. The PDF build proccess should generate one. Ifit does
nto this must be reported as a bug oto the documentation document

Bad news here.
Currently, all docwriters/translators are working based on the stable
version (i.e. 2.2.x) only.
That means that work will only begin for 2.4 when it is out, which
implies in a gap of a couple months at least for a version covering
most new features.

AFAIK they are separate publications.

[Gimp-user] Publishing Gimp book

2005-09-06 Thread cedric GEMY
I'm not sure that the speed Gimp is developed can stop publisher. Of
course they like to have up2date docs but as they think in years, they
will usually work on book update when necessary.
For those who want to self-publish book, it is easily possible. That's
what have been done for [a la] SOS GIMP (http://www.le-radar.com), which
is a FGDL book. Translation of it could be done.
For people who to test that : a first is an average of 6 month work.
Application documentation are very hard to do as they have to be very
precise.

If Olivier need some help for self publication in France, i can help.

I also would like to say that i'm working on a new book. Not a learning
one, but an example one, with graphists tips. 3 people are already OK to
contribute, but other are welcome. The purpose is to show what good job
can be do with free softwares (we know that but not everybody). If self
published this book could be under a Free licence.

I think it's *supposed* to mean handling e.g. printing and sales of
the book and whatnot by oneself, although I don't know the details.
That said, e-books are always quite nice. Have you ever heard of

Self-publishing simply means that the author is the publisher. This can
be for any kind of book. I personally self-publish a GFDL book, and can
provide guidance for anyone wanting to do something similar. Open
licenses means that micro-publishers (which include self-publishers) can
publish books that they have not paid to write. Technically, anyone could
download my book and publish it on their own. In fact, I believe that is
actually happening for translations. Most people do not because it would
be a waste of time to simply re-publish under another title what someone
else is already the de facto seller of. If anyone is interested in my
book, see:
