[Goanet] ROMAN DEAL OF PRATAP NAIK?

2006-08-09 Thread Fausto V. D'Costa
ROMI DEAL
There are very strong indications that the fanatic Pratap Naik has struck a
deal with the RSS Chief, Subhas Velinkar. The RSS brigade and even senior
BJP leaders have been making statements that the only languages which
deserve to be official languages in Goa are Marathi and Konkani in the Roman
script. The objective is to marginalise the secular elements in the Konkani
movement who have always strongly condemned the RSS conspiracy to polarise
Goa along communal lines. The BJP and the RSS have been extending support
to the demand for equal status for Romi Konkani as the official language of
the State. Not because they are interested in Romi Konkani but because it
serves their purpose of dividing Goa on communal lines. I understand that
the deal between Pratap Naik, who has been the most hysterical of those
demanding equal official language status for Romi Konkani, is that the RSS
and the BJP will extend full support to Romi Konkani. Aparently Parrikar
and Velingkar assured Pratap Naik that the BJP would support any amendment
to confer equal status to Romi Konkani in the Legislative Assembly. In
return, apparently, Pratap Naik has assured Subhash Velingkar that the Romi
Konkani leaders will support or at least not oppose the demand for equal
status for Marathi.
It is unfortunate that the Romi Konkani leaders and even some prominent
parish priests have fallen into the RSS trap. I would like to reiterate
that the best solution would be to amend the Official Language Act to
provide that Romi Konkani along with Marathi shall be used for any or all
official purposes, including the knowledge of Konkani for recruitment to
government jobs. To meet the legitimate grievances of the Romi
Konkaniwadis, it can also be stipulated that they will get equal
representation an patronage in all official language bodies.
(Stray thoughts by Rajan Narayan in the Goan Observer)

FR. NAIK'S CLARIFICATION:
Fr. Pratap Naik castigated Mr Rajan Narayan for fomenting confusion
associating him with Mr Subhash Velingker stating that the two were hand in
glove to pursue the Romi issue and as a quid pro quo support the demand for
Marathi as official language. He said that his demand is for Konkani in
Roman script with Devanagari . He questioned Mr Narayan -- how could a
man ---referring to RSS chief in Goa Mr Subhash Velingker a
teacher,- who had in his article called St
Francis Xavier Sant or Saitan in Sunaparant daily be
linked to Fr Pratap Naik? Fr Naik stated that most of
the Press resorted to distortion of news and provoked
confusion.

[Goanet] Tiatrist Babli arrives.

2006-08-09 Thread A. Veronica Fernandes
TIATRIST BABLI ARRIVED IN KUWAIT.

Just today in the morning at 7.30 the youthful and blooming Babli, daughter
of Ophelia and late Bab Peter reached Kuwait. She was received at the
Kuwait International Airport by the president of Kuwait Goan Association
Salvador Dias from Curtorim and Fidelis Fernandes, brother of Rosary Ferns,
from Colva. This is the first trip of Babli to Kuwait after 20 years. She
first came to Kuwait twenty years back when she was a small baby girl along
with her parents who all came to participate in the Tiatro written and
directed by Rosary Ferns only. She stays in Kuwait city along with her
mother and Antonette de Calangute and her contact number is 2413634. She
will play a major role in this Tiatro and sing beautiful duet and solos and
also Cantos. This is going to be a rare occasion for the audience to
witness her acting and singing along with her mother Ophelia. The other
visiting artistes are William de Curtorim, John D'Silva, Osvi Viegas,
Antonette de Calangute and Ophelia. To avoid last minute disappointment,
Tiatro goers should book their seats in advance. Entry passes are available
with organizers and Raja Stores.

This Tiatro Ghor Bhandlem Ghorabo Moddlo written and directed by Rosary
Ferns will be staged by Kuwait Goan Association. All are requested to come
in time so that delay in starting the Tiatro can be avoided and since
everything is smooth, there should be no need for delay if all reach in
time. According to the organisers, they are going to start the Tiatro
without delay. Hence, they seek cooperation from all.

A. Veronica Fernandes,
Kuwait.

Re: [Goanet] WEAR CASTE UP YOUR SLEEVES - TO UNDERSTAND GROUND REALITIES

2006-08-09 Thread cornel
Hi Gilbert
I am afraid you are incorrect in your understanding of ground realities
especially when you use the word caste entirely a misnomer in America, as
somehow equivalent to the concept of caste in India. Instead of your word
caste in America, the terms ethnic minorities, community groups,
hyphenated Americans, newcomers or even new social classes would definitely
be more appropriate in your hopeful search for an appropriate term to make
your point re America.

On another point, you seem to suggest, incorrectly that, lower caste groups
in India are happy to stay within their low status position by wearing
caste on their sleeves, in clearly, your unmistakable apology for caste. The
very substantial literature on caste in India does not support your
commonsense view at all. There are several ways lower caste groups have
historically opted for mobility within the caste structure or endeavoured to
get out of their caste groups. Minimally, if you read outstanding research
by Scrinivas you will note that he has talked about intentional processes
like westernization, sanskritization and change of religion as means to get
out of the binds of traditional Hindu caste.

Others have been more radical politically and are treating caste and
casteism as racist on the global scene. They are making good progress even
though India, refused, for now, to admit casteism as racism at the last
international conference on racism (in 2004, from memory) held in Durban,
South Africa.

No Gilbert, the smart guys you so deride are much smarter than you think!
You have also persisted in repeating your erroneous view in this post, about
a relative static and unchanging caste situation in India. So let me be of
some help re essential reading for you, from a small selection (non
alphabetically presented) of my books on caste from my home bookshelf. After
all, Goanet is a learning instrument:

Deliege R. (1999) The Untouchables in India. New York. Berg Publications.
Kothari R. (1991 reprint) Caste in Indian Politics. New Delhi. Orient
Longman Ltd.
Thapar R. (Eds) (1996 reprint) Tribe, Caste and Religion in India. New
Delhi. Macmillan Press.
Michael S. M. (ed) (1999) Dalits in Modern India: Vision and Values.New
Delhi. Vistaar Publications.
Sharma K.L. (1999) Caste and Class in India. New Delhi. Rawat Publications.
Charsley S. R. and Karanth G.K. (Eds) ( 1998) Challenging Untouchability:
Dalit Initiative and Experience from Karnataka. New Delhi. Sage
Publications.
Robb P. (1996) Dalit Movements and the Meaning of Labour. New Delhi. Oxford
University Press.
Sharma U. (1999) Caste. Buckinghamshire, England. Open University Press.
Massey J. (1995) Dalits in India: Religion as a Source of Bondage or
Liberation With Special Reference to Christians. New Delhi. Manohar Press.
Ahmad I. (1978) Caste and Social Stratification among Muslims in India. New
Delhi. Manohar Press.

Finally, Gilbert, to make sense of how minorities adjust in their new
destinations of migration you will find the next two books particularly
illuminating. The first relates to the UK. The second, has excellent
historical material about what you call mainstreaming in the USA.

Eade J (1989) The Politics of Community: The Bangladeshi Community in East
London. Avebury Press, Aldershot, England.
Rex J. (1986) Race and Ethnicity. Milton Keynes, Open University Press.

Very best regards and hopefully, pleasant reading.

Subject: [Goanet] WEAR CASTE UP YOUR SLEEVES - TO UNDERSTAND GROUND
REALITIES
MOST (specially the lower caste) use caste to protect and preserve their
identity. In India, the Hindus use caste to maintain their religious path
(deity) and way of life. In the USA, the caste (each immigrant group)
maintained their identity for the same reasons for about two generations.
Then they were confident in joining the main stream. But they still strive
to maintain their identity through their ethnic religious and social
rituals, socials and festivals THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

It is by protecting their identity, many social groups in India and the
world have survived in numbers rather than economic wealth. Now these
groups are using the same numbers to fight for a share of the political
 clout and economic wealth.
This is something that Catholic Goans (the smart and intelligent) can
 learn from others.

[Goanet] GOA'S OWN CYBER-BALCAO: LESSONS TO LEARN ON THE INTERNET SUPERHIGHWAY

2006-08-09 Thread Jerry Fernandes
Hello Goanetters

Different people buy news papers for different reasons, Some to read the
political news, hence will start from page 1, others will go for the Sports
page to start with, and gradually to the beginning, yet there are others who
will first go to Business news, and than other things in the news papers. For
me, its first letters to the editor and than editorials and than the remaining.

Letters to the editor has always interested me as it has been the individual
voice to subjects unlike the news, which can be the editors voice depending
on his affiliation to the politician, like in Goa, we always used to say
Navhind times was pro Government, and O'Heraldo was the opposite. But in
letters to the editor, people don't care a damn, they will write what is in
their minds, and well sometimes, the editor will shorten it either loosing
the entire meaning of the letter for which it was intended for due to shortage
of space, or maybe he did not like some words in the letter and sometimes it
will carry the whole message of the writer but in brief.

When I first was given a print out of Goanet, digest format, I was thrilled
with the discussions going on it and I immediately subscribed for it, I think
now almost 3 years ago? And since than I have been a big fan of Goanet.
Sometimes joining in the discussions, and best part is making friends. Goanet
to me is a complete letters to the editor column with plenty of news coming
from various writers like Godfrey, Fred, and others.

It was nice reading the article with the above subject by by V. M. de Malar
and its very true to what he has written. Thanks Malar, for bringing my
thoughts thru your writings.

Cheers to Goanet and all its writers and readers.

by V. M. de Malar wrote

..Eddie Fernandes came online, the veteran librarian had
access to superb search engines and posted news articles from
around the world with relevance for Goa. And so Goanet became
the best one-stop source for Goa-related international news.

Fred Noronha came online at the same time, the Saligao-based
journalist fed Goanet with locally generated news and views.
And bolstered by these miraculously free services that
materialized on your desktop almost instantaneously, the
membership of Goanet soared from a couple of score to a
couple of thousand.

Goa's pre-eminent contemporary historian, Dr. Teotonio de
Souza joined the network from his university in Portugal.

Writers like Victor Rangel-Ribeiro and Philip
  Nazareth, distinguished scientists like Santosh
Helekar and Helga do Rosario Gomes, technologists
like Samir Kelekar all joined the network, and the
forum became convulsed with stormy debates about
religion, colonialism, 1961, and all the topics
that get Goans hot under the collar whether on the
  Internet or off.

In time, the network has grown and expanded further. The
messages still fly fast and furious, and we are seeing a long
overdue demographic correction as more and more Goans in Goa
are finding their way to this venerable discussion list.

Goanet needs to be commended for running a strictly
transparent, strictly inclusive organization that has
consistently maintained very high-minded standards.

It is this Open Source motivation that is the key to its
success and longevity, and provides an excellent model for
newcomers to the Goa niche of cyberspace.

As our state prepares to roll out broadband right into the
villages, we will be bringing tens of thousands of new
subscribers online, and a host of new Internet-based
companies and services will be born. They should all take a
long look at what has kept Goanet alive; it's an
uncomplicated formula that will yield results.

This month marks twelve long years since Herman Carneiro
launched Goanet, the teenager expected to keep in touch with
a few friends and now manages a list encompassing more than
6000 members.

Hello Mr, Lawrence

Your reply made we wonder what you understood of the Holy Bible. I am not a
scholar in this subject, but yet I feel you have not understood the basic
message in this.

Its not only Christians who believe that Abraham was asked for the sacrificing
of his son, but also Moslems too believe only difference is that they believe
it's Ishmael.

Its was Abraham's utmost love for God which needed the test, and he did not
fail God in that.

The defination for Violence is a behaviour that is intended to hurt or kill.
Violence is an act of greedy people who want something by hook or by crook,
(eg can be politicians ?)

And for Sacrifice is giving up something valuable to oneself, in order to get
or do something that seems more important. Sacrifice is an act of selfless
person, who will give even his/her last morsel of food and stay hungry. ( eg
can be parents )

Cheers

[Goanet] POETRY BY THE SEA, PLAINS AND HILLS

2006-08-09 Thread brian mark mendonca
POETRY BY THE SEA, PLAINS AND HILLS

Goan traveller-poet Brian Mendonca is just back in Delhi from a whirlwind sea-
plains-hills poetic tour, reading and writing poems in the rain at calangute
near the sea; at the secunderabad sailing club overlooking the angry
Hussainsagar lake on the deccan plains and at Nainital among the idyllic lakes
of Bhimtal and Naukuchiya Tal.

Choreographed over 3 consecutive weekends brian seized the day stealing red
hot monsoon fares on low-cost flights to goa and hyderabad.

Cafe Literati, Calangute hosted Brian on Sat 22 July as rain beat down on
Diviya Kapur's old Goan house and the windows swayed to the breeze. Renowned
author Maria Aurora Couto introduced brian by candle-light in the absence of
electicity. She later wrote in the Visitors's Book-'Deeply moved by Brian's
passionate and and wistful evocation of the Goa we love - his deep feelings
for the environment, the liveliness and wit that binds the community, the
poetry of life on the move!'

Brian's PhD supervisor Prof Lakshmi Chandra and her mother Ms Ruttonsha hosted
brian's poetry reading at the prestigious secunderabad sailing club the
following weekend on sat 29th July. Brian also read at his alma mater the
Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL),where brian did his
PhD on madness, on Sunday.

The lakes at Bhimtal and Naukuchiyatal beckoned the last weekend 3-5 August.
This was an official chillout and Brian came away with 3 new poems - the
latest being 'My Innisfree'.

Re: [Goanet] Brutality of invaders against women: Goa and Kuwait

2006-08-09 Thread cornel
Hi Paulo
Many thanks for your post on the issue of rape in 1961 and 1990 and also for
the excellent references/links. I wish I could find the time to read them.

I have no doubts whatsoever that, very sadly, rape in everyday life, and
especially in wartime, takes place and is often very brutal. The evidence
can be found in the literature and on the net. It is also clear why personal
reportage is much lower than actual incidence in all societies. However,
because journalists and reporters are invariably present at most war scenes,
fairly reliable reportage now comes out reasonably quickly.

My contention re Veronica's post is simple. If one makes serious
allegations like rape, re an individual or group, then it is incumbent that,
that person provides firm evidence. If the evidence is not available, then
it is incumbent and wisest for the person not to make the unsubstantiated
allegation.

I am sure that, like the very reasonable person you are, you will agree with
me that all of us have a measure of responsibility for what we express on
the net. I also think Fred had this in mind when he independently asked the
same question I did, about evidence of rape, at the start of this
discussion.
Best regards

Re: [Goanet] Rock Solid Moral Codes

2006-08-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Dear Gilbert,

I was waiting for you to make your 'final amateur comments' on this thread
so that I could do the same. I am constantly surprised by your
extrapolation of personal experiences to the general population (referring
to your closing paragraphs on the reluctance of atheists to accept their
own mortality and impending death). It may surprise you to learn that most
cases involving assisted suicide for terminal patients are instigated by
suffering people who have no doubts about the myth of after-life or have
any delusions about the salvation of their souls. In fact the President
Emeritus if the Humanist Association of Canada is Dr. Rob Buckman, a
prominent oncologist from Toronto who has seen more than a fair share of
lingering, painful death in his practice.

As for your summary, I will briefly address each point:

1. Religion sets out a 'rock solid code' that expect all it converts or
inductees to follow to the letter, depending on interpretation by various
generations of 'theologians' whose sole purpose in life is to complicate
the code and invent new ways to interpret it. Eg. Capybara meat is edible
on Fridays when abstinence is advocated because they are water-dwelling
animals! Go figure.

2. Only the first sentence in this paragraph is correct (Fundamentally,
atheists believe they have No Soul and there is No After-life.) While
atheists personally have no use for an 'external' God, we do accept that
there is merit to the universal 'concept of God' as the human spirit (ie.
intellect) we have all been endowed with. However, this concept has been
hijacked by organized religions and layered with theological nonsense that
it is no longer recognizable. It is unfortunate that the basic human need
to believe in more than the finality of our existence on this earth has
opened the doors to 'God-men' intervening on behalf of the ignorant masses.
The disappointment felt by previously religious atheists in the inability
of 'a rock solid moral code' to alleviate social ills probably fuels their
animosity against their religion and other religions in general. The last
sentence is patently false, confusing immature atheism of laziness or
disappointment with mature atheism of intellect.

3. Behaviour and Belief are completely separate. Knowing the consequences
of certain behaviour does nothing to prevent it. It has long been
acknowledged that the death penalty is not a deterrent to murder. Just
because there exists a commandment such as 'Thou shalt not kill' will not
stop a religious psychopath. Leaders of developed nations exalt the
killing of terrorists, insurgents and enemies.

Unlike you, I find this subject far from sterile... and putting our faith
in theologians to give us the answers is a misguided one. It is
interesting to discuss matters that will affect the lives of our children
and grand-children. Most universities now require their students to take a
credit in critical thinking. The text books used are predominantly written
by humanists.

As for the impact on Goan society, as we have seen in the past, if we
refuse to evolve, we will go extinct. We need to start embracing new ideas
and not be afraid to speak out against evils (now there's a theological
concept ;-) that are prevalent in society today. Your antiquated ideal of
a 'God-fearing Goan Catholic' is outdated as is evident from the opinions
posted by many free-spirited thinkers on this forum. Just because our
parents thought they were doing the best for us by absolving us of original
sin by baptism and indoctrinating us with a 'faith' does not mean that the
same will hold true for the next generation. Even though I'm not in the
50+ category yet, my genuine hope is to leave a legacy of critical thinking
to my children and any other individuals I can influence with my example.

I have left in your entire post quoted here as reference for the few who
may be following this thread. Once again, thank you for giving me this
opportunity to expound.
However, this may not be my final word on this thread.

Thanks Valmiki, for the nice words you have written about my close
friend Neela. She was a loving friend, mother, sister, aunt. She was
also a wonderful paediatrician, a committed catholic, an upright
citizen ,a help to all who needed it, and a lovely person.

In the 60s and 70s, when polio was yet common in this country, she has
saved a number of children with her timely diagnosis in Wadias at
Bombay.

A goan who was a professional, worked selflessly without any self
importance, and who will leave an indelible mark behind.

[Goanet] God Fearing and In a court of Law - a response to RK Nair

2006-08-09 Thread Jose Colaco
wrt to this from me : [ An attempt to commit violence, is NOT equivalent to
having commited violence.]

Radhakrishnan Nair wrote : Fantastic logic! It means God-fearing people may
attempt rape and
murder, but they won't actually do the thingy!

Try telling it in a court of law and see what happens!

---jc's response---

Dear Mr. Nair,

From the little I know about such matters, I will submit the following four
points wrt the Court of Law:

1. In a court of law, an attempt to commit violence is NOT equivalent to
having commited violence.

2. In a court of law, it is highly unlikely that my above quoted by you
statement will be interpreted as meaning that God-fearing people may
attempt rape and murder, but they won't actually do the thingy

3. Even though interpretation of the intentions of Parliament (as in
enacted laws) is usually in the domain of judges, I submit that most judges
will hold that (God Fearing or not) An attempted Rape or an attempted Murder
is NOT the same as Rape and Murder respectively. The Defendant could still
be charged for the ATTEMPT but not for the substantive crime of murder.

4. It is my understanding that In a court of law, for a charge of (say)
Murder to be brought about, there MUST be a Homicide -(no such situation
with Abraham/Isaac). An ATTEMPT will NOT do.

I know that you will agree. If you do not, please do tell us why.

good wishes

Jim,
This is not an issue subject to ongoing debate. Only
time will tell who the real idiots are.

I have made my opinion clear in a response to Velho's

demand.

Even before the growing global economy, the experience
of central and south America and Europe is that the
demand from locals has little or nothing to do with
the increasing value of properties WITH AMBIENCE in

to be able to tell the difference.

If someone doesn't think so, it's their money and they

Re: [Goanet] Exposure of ....... re Godfearing evil/response to Mario

2006-08-09 Thread Mario Goveia
--- Elisabeth Carvalho wrote:

Firstly, is there a difference between REAL evil
 and FAKE evil?

Mario replies:

Yes. REAL evil is when someone medically sane
deliberately and maliciously sets out to harm others.
I gave you a long list of examples.

FAKE evil are the kinds of personal bad habits and
other non-evil sins you include in order to score
rhetorical points.

Elisabeth writes:

Secondly, are you now saying that your position on
homosexuality, is different from that of the
Catholic Church, who firmly condemns the act i.e
labels it as evil. If that is the case, what you
are saying is that the Church's rock-solid code of
conduct does not apply to you.

Mario responds:

The Catholic Church's position on homosexuality does
not apply to me because I am not homosexual.

The act itself is classified as a sin by the Catholic
Church under it's basic rock solid moral code, just as
adultery is. All sins are not evil [see REAL versus
FAKE evil above].

Elisabeth writes:

Ergo, it is not just Atheists and Agnostics, whose
code of conduct cannot be substantiated or validated
due to lack of formal codification (which has been
your persistent mantra against atheists, set to
iambic pentameter), but your very own is in
 question too.

Mario responds:

My own moral code is pretty rock solid when it comes
to what I need to do, or get back to if I stray. I
also know that members of morally based organizations
have subscribed to their moral codes, which are public
knowledge and often highly developed over centuries of
experience.

When it comes to an unorganized individual
atheist/agnostic like yourself, you may know your own
home-made moral code, which may be excellent, but you
really have no idea what each home-made moral code is
for other unorganized individual atheists as much as
you and Santosh may want to ASSUME they are as
excellent as yours and desperately want to speak for
them all as you have sometimes tried to speak for ALL
Goanetters.

Ergo, no general, across the board, unconditional
moral equivalencies can be made with the moral codes
of ALL unorganized, individual atheists/agnostics.

[Goanet] BENEFITS OF official recognition to KONKANI DEVANAGARI SCRIPT

2006-08-09 Thread godfrey gonsalves
Even as the Chief Minister of Goa and the Goa Pradesh
Congress President Mr Ravi Sitaram Naik have gone to
New Delhi according to a source in New Delhi who spoke
to this writer; the devils workshop (pro Konkani Only
in Devanagari script protoganists) is agog with lies,
lies, and more lies to quell the storm raised by the
RLAF (Romi Lipi Action Front).

A perusal of the benefits that have accrued to the
miniscule population 3% of Hindu Brahmins by virtue of
official recognition to Konkani in Devanagari script
owing the Goa Daman and Diu Official Language Act 1987
clearly indicates that the Catholics leaders and
politicians under the Konkani Porjecho Avaz
compelled the 29.6% Catholic community to make the
SUPREME COMPROMISE on the Roman script in favour of
Devanagari
-ofcourse ignorant of the fact that
a) script was not the criteria, but language, for
the formation of a State, (to save us from being
merged with Maharshtra) and
b) Devanagari as the script was already given legal
sanction by a clandestine resolution passed by the
Advisory Board for Konkani of the Sahitya Academy on
21.11.1981 by some Hindu Brahmins who include Mr Uday
L Bhembre (Adv) ex Independent Margao MLA and Chairman
of the INC think tank (septic tank?) Vichar Vibhag
and others- all intended to

a) get official recognition to the language Konkani by
enacting the Goa Daman and Diu Official Language Act
1987
b) later dismantle the Union Territory status and
obtain Statehood on 30/05/1987 and
c) ensure that the non Hindu Brahmins who admit that
Konkani is their mother tongue but write in Marathi
would find it easy to accept Konkani if written in the
Devanagari script instead of Roman

Even the then Good Shepherd of the Archdiocese of Goa
and Daman, Archbishop Patriach Dr Raul Niclau
Gonsalves ( who surprisingly even post Liberation
enjoys the Order of precedence alongwith the Head of
State as during the colonial regime AND who later in
2000 ashamedly was the first to greet the CM Mr
Manohar Parrikar of the technically constituted BJP
government but later developed cold feet as the right
wing party inched its foray in the political horizon
and cried hoarse to put a end to his regime when they
tresspassed into the Paco Patriacal to claim an
alleged stone -- Linga ) fell for the Hindu Brahmin
leaders bait in 1989 - 90 to introduce Konkani in
Devanagari script as the medium of instructions ONLY
in all its Diocesan run schools.

Thereby ruining the careers of the innocent Catholic
children who do not have the resources to learn in
English medium schools which are unaided by Government
and hence are run by private bodies or forced to
succumb to learn Marathi especially in the Government
Primary Schools in the remote corners of the State.
Besides that mothers are forced to teach an alien
script and a Konkani language with its Sanskritised
version making a mockery of the entire primary
education of a child.

So what are the benefits that those ( 3% Hindu
Brahmins exclusively ) who benefit out of the grant of
official recognition to Konkani in Devanagari script:

a) it is only the Hindu Brahmin community which
benefits it; not the Catholics not the non Hindu
Brahmins whose mother tongue they ADMIT is KONKANI but
write in MARATHI for historical reasons;

b) all the Indian currency notes bear Konkani in
Devanagari script notings
c) all newspapers in Konkani in Devanagari script get
funds by way of Government advertisement, tenders,
public notices (even though the only such newspaper
SUNAPARANT has only a 1500 circulation )
d) all State and Central Libraries can be directed to
subscribe for print audio and visual material in
Konkani devanagari script irrespective whether there
is readership viewer or not
e) all State and Central Government instituition
airlines communication media railways etc can be
directed to subscribe for Konkani in Devanagri script
publications
f) all examinations written test etc conducted by the
State and Central Government institutions must be
conducted in Konkani in Devanagari script;
g) for the purpose of employment in State or Central
Government offices institutions knowledge of KONKANI
IN DEVANAGARI SCRIPT is compulsory Post and
Telegraphs, Railways etc etc
h) interviews for promotion of State or Central
Government staff are based on knowledge of Konkani in
Devanagri script
i) tutors knowing Konkani in Devanagari script have a
ready made self employment opportunity to teach the
children of the 29.6% Catholics
j) all cultural, literary, works which have Konkani
in its Sanskritised version and written in Devanagri
script receives grants, subsidy and other forms of
financial assistance from the State and Central
Government bodies for such individuals and for the
promotion of such activities;

[Goanet] Vasku, Vasco, Bhoyas, Saptak, Jelebies etc

2006-08-09 Thread JoeGoaUk
Vasku, Vasco, Bhoyas, Saptak Jelebies

One time, 1970s, Vasku (Vasco) was very famous for freshly churned Lassie, 'dud
pedas' and 'Mitai', 'Bhelpuri' etc from the hands of UP Bhaiyas (Bhoyas).
Migrants
workers were usually seen only in Vasco. Perhaps, it was due to the last
Railway
Station (terminating point) of all South-Central trains (Bombay-
Miraj-Londa-Vasco
etc etc) Stn.Vasco da Gama (Sambhaji Nagar). Other reason could be, at the time
of
construction of the large scale Industry, Zuari Agro Chemicals Pvt. Ltd where
many
migrants may have come to work there.

There were two Goan boys who used to come to our school from Vasco and because
they
were from Vasco, we often called them ‘Vasku Bhoya’. If a girl from our village
marries to any Vascoites, we said she married to ‘Vasku bhoya’ their children
born
were also called as ‘bhoyas’.

During those days, we never missed Vasco ‘Saptak’, we always went there during
the
night ( and again during the day as the fair last 7-10days). Used to arrange
special bus at night (all Christians men , women children) and come back by
7am
next day. During the night all streets were crowed with all sorts of people
from all
over Goa.
Some even came there for pick-pocketing
Some come there for stealing other items from the fair stalls.
Most of us went there for fun and very few of us (not me ?) just to dodge with
young
girls (in the crowd). Endless queues were seen to worship Lord Damodar, see
pic, we
too were in the queque to see the God and offcourse, for the free ‘Prasad’ sweet
mixture of Coconut and Jaggary.

Another specialty of the Vasco ‘Saptak’ is freshly squeezed ‘jelebies’ or
‘Jelobis”. There were many stalls making jelibies on site with plenty of
sitting
arrangement for the customers. Jelebies there were fresh, hot and cheap, see
pics

Today, I visited Vasco, and had an opportunity to visit the temple, ate
jelebies
too.
All these things brought back my memories and the same I am sharing with you
here.

[Goanet] death of distinguished Toronto musician

2006-08-09 Thread Tony Barros
Hi all !
The death occured in Toronto of well known musician - Remy DeMello.
He suffered from a stroke more than ten years ago, and although
he got back from a coma some two years later, he never fully
recovered.

Hailing from a family of musicians, Remy founded the DeMello
Brothers band in the southern Tanzanian town of Iringa in the
early fifties with older brothers- Santan (trumpet) and the late
Jules (piano and accordion), uncle Matthew on drums and Tony
Fernandes on double bass.

The family moved to Dar es Salaam - the capital - in the
mid-fifties and they continued playing with new musicians -
including drummer - Joaquim Mendes formerly of Iringa.

Remy was a very versatile clarinet player, but was equally talented
in playing the trumpet, tenor saxophone and trombone. He was well
known for imitating the Afro-American trumpeter and singer - Louis
Armstrong-aka Satchmo.

After stints on the BI ships, he returned to Dar, but left
for Kuwait in the seventies and finally to Toronto where he played
for a number of bands and taught music to some goan youth.

However, some ten years ago as he was driving to the home of a young
goan boy to prepare him for his final piano exam, he took a detour
to the hospital where on arrival, he collapsed at the steering
wheel- apparently of a stroke.

Remy- who leaves behind a wife and children- will be buried this
Saturday in the Canadian metropolis.

His youngest brother - Francis- a very talented pianist and drummer-
plays as a one-man show at a top Toronto nite-spot, and Santan
continues to play the trumpet for some bands at GOA functions.

Yours In Grief.

Tony Barros.
Union, New Jersey.

Dear Dr Colaco,

I wonder if in the below paragraph, you have
inadvertently typed Western India instead of Western
Europe. The folklore surrounding sacrifice while
building bridges is common in Western Europe. Infact,
the nursery rhyme London Bridge is falling down is a
cryptic reference to this horrific act. The bridge
endured several disasters and there was always the
implied threat of human sacrifice to make it work.

[Goanet] Does anyone know about this Portuguese song?

2006-08-09 Thread Silviano Barbosa

Hi Goanetters,

A new acquaintance of mine, Simran Silva, who is a co-author of the book,
My India: Passages Through Time and a free lance writer and a copy editor,
wants some help with the details of the singer and title of the Portuguese
song with the following translated lyrics:

*
Simran writes:

Does Anyone Know?
Does anyone out there in cyberspace know the name of this song and who sings
it? I've put the English translation, but it is actually a song written and
sung in Portuguese. I hope someone out there knows and can tell me. Thanks.

The lyrics are very deep in English, I can only imagine how much more so in
their original language.

**
[
For seven years you fooled me and left me in darkness. I’ll tell the sun to
tell the moon that I will never, never give you my forgiveness.

If someday by chance you end up at my door with a sack in hand. I would give
you bread just as I would any other beggar. But I will never, never give you
my forgiveness.

If someday by chance you end up behind iron bars, I would visit you just
like any other prisoner. But I will never, never give you my forgiveness.

If someday by chance, I see you dead and stretched out in your coffin, I’d
give you a kiss and then and only then will I give you my forgiveness. ]

Aren't these lyrics fantastic?

Please check out Simran's blogsite

[Goanet] Screening Final Solution ..

2006-08-09 Thread Vivek
I came across a post by V gadgil regarding the
screening of final solution, a documentary by rakesh
sharma.

I have seen the documentary myself. In my opinion the
documentary is a crude and obnoxious attempt by
leftists to exemplify and exagerate the unfortunate
happenings in Gujarat in order to extract some cheap
political mileage.

The documentary is full of half truths lies as well as
unverified and mischiveous allegations against a
particular political ideology.

Some points worth noting are as follows:

The following is a excerpt of a interview rakesh
Sharma gave to BBC:

BBC Four: You've said that the Gujarat riots were a
turning point for India. Why is that?
Rakesh Sharma: It was a turning point because for the
first time the state was complicit. We now have it on
record that there were government ministers trying to
disrupt and control police operations when the
violence was at its peak

THE FACT IS THAT THIS WAS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE SKH
RIOTS WERE FAR MORE GRUESOME AND HAD AMPLE STATE
PATRONAGE.

2. The documentary conveniently ignores the fact that
hindu dalits were also the target of violent muslim
mobs i many parts of gujarat.

3.The MYTH being circulated is that the state police
did nothing. the FACT is that 254 rioteers were shot
dead by the state police and many more were injured.

4. For instance, the documentary claims that:
Narendra Modi introduced 7/8th grade history textbook
that glorifies Hitler.
It, however, turns out that the books was actually
prescribed under a Congress government in 1993 and can
hardly, in any case, be pinned upon the incumbent
chief minister.

5. There is wide coverage to the hate speech delivered
by hindu fundamentalists like Togadia and others but
the documentary is silent regarding the vicious anti
hindu uterances of fanatic muslims. the documentary
tries to create the impression that hate speech is
carried out only by Hindus while the muslims are meek
victims.

6.The inteviews are selectively carried out with
either muslims vctims or hindu suspects. It is
surprising that rakesh dint find any single muslim
exremist or a hindu victim of communal riots

7. Finaly the name Final Solution itself is very
interesting. The Final Solution was conceived at the
Wannsee conference by office holders in the German
administration to come up with a long-term plan to
murder and dislocate Jews. There is absolutely no
evidence whatsoever that even one murder in Gujrat was
conceived at the state or national level, no evidence
that it was ever a part of government policy. Because
it was not.

The name is chosen to pander to western audiences for
whom it has a far darker connotation (it implies
violence as a part of government policy) with what
happened in Gujrat.

FINAL COMMENTS:

Some peope would like everybody to believe that I
have a vested interest in protecting the rioteers.

many many people on Goanet use synonyms (some even
confess to doing that openly) yet some people here
would like to portray me as someone who creates smoke
screen and red herrings because i just use a first
name.

I would request everyone to indeed watch the film and
see for themselves the biased and inflamatory messages
propagated by these marxist miscreants.

I also happened to talk to many of my gujarati
friends. They admit that wht happened in Gujarat was
bad but yet they are also convinced that vested
interests have started spreading canards about
gujratis in general.

A question worth reflecting upon is :

Why would the gujratis who are essentialy a pragmatic
business community who know better than anyone else
that economic growth is the first casualty of riots
would so actively support narendra Modi?

Re: [Goanet] London Goenkars, please note!!

2006-08-09 Thread velho
Hi Mario,

The point I was making was from an investment perspective, for a foreign
national with no roots in Goa. As is your habit, you have completely
misinterpreted the post and have taken it as a personal insult.

Unfortunately it will be impossible for me to continue this discussion since
your understanding of economics and investing seems to be limited to supply
and demand, which you keep repeating montonously. It is quite obvious that
you have not read the forecasts for real esate in India from HDFC and other
Indian investors with far more knowledge than your NEVER HUMBLE opinion.

In the world of economics according to Mario, do economic cycles exist??
Does there exist a field called economic forecasting??

The numbers though approximated are not bogus. The prices on that waterfront
for sea facing views are between Rs 40,000-50,000 per sq metre which is
very close to the price of real esate in suburbs of Mumbai such as Bandra
and Santacruz.

Re: [Goanet] Can a Christian be a Communist?

2006-08-09 Thread Mario Goveia
--- Aristo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Since you have repeated a lot of your logic once
again by conveniently avoiding to give an answer to
the question Karl Marx, 19-century Communist
Manifesto aside, in todays world of Cafeteria
plural identities, what practically prevents a
Christian from being a Communist in
political/economic Ideology?, I will discuss this
 no further.

Mario responds:

That's just as well, because you are comparing apples
and oranges by trying to compare REAL Karl Marx
communism where a state had to use it's coercive power
in the day-to-day implementation and the impotent
political version followed by obscure political
parties which have no power to impose REAL communism
and so are really socialists masquerading as
communists.

Aristo writes:

However, I would like to tell you that you have once
again misunderstood what I have written, and this
being the 3rd instance with me, I will assume that
you don't take the time to properly read since you
spend most of it typing away your voluminous views.

This is what I had written:
It do not think it is written anywhere in the
Communist Manifesto (yea, I had to actually
download it and go through it since you love
to refer to it ever so often) that Communism has to
be brutal and repressive. As per the philosophy,
 Communism IS egalitarian in nature.

Mario responds:

On the contrary, I have understood that you have not
understood the implications of the Communist Manifesto
in it's day-to-day implementation.

The concept of egalitarianism is foreign to human
nature, especially when forced on society by the
state. Each individual is different. Some are
achievers, others are not. Some are leaders, others
are not. Some are smart, others are not. Some are
successful in acquiring wealth, others are not. The
Communist Manifesto made no common sense in forcing
the theory of eglatarianism over these human and
natural differences. This is precisely why brutality
and oppression became necessary in the IMPLEMENTATION
of communism, even though it was not written anywhere.

Oh, I forgot. Some people have common sense, others
don't.

Aristo writes:

However, I do not subscribe to the means of
obtaining that egalitarianism, ie, the Robin hood
method. To me, altruism (which is
against human nature) should be voluntary. I'd
. rather prefer the trickle down effect, and
circulation of money to achieve egalitarianism.

Mario asks:

Does this mean you reject the coercive egalitarianism
of REAL communism for the trickle down economic
benefits of capitalism? Real egalitarianism is
against human nature and a political pipe dream.

Aristo writes:

Also, would you be kind enough to humour me and
answer the following questions with your Goveian
 Logic?

 1) What is the fundamental difference in the
 Political Economic ideology between Communism
 Socialism?

Mario responds patiently:

Socialism is communism minus the religious hostility
and power of the state behind it, i.e. what was left
when the coercive power of a state to impose REAL
communism was relegated to the dustbin of history
where it really belongs.

Aristo writes:

 2) Can an Athiest be a Capitalist?

Mario responds:

Of course they can, Aristo. Sheesh!

Aristo writes:

 3) Can a Christian be a fascist?

Mario responds:

Not a Christian who follows the rock solid Christian
moral code. However, there have been people who
claimed to be Christian but followed NOT A SINGLE
tenet of the rock solid moral code, who were fascist.
These were used to make exceptions the rule in the
recent full-scale attack on religion which seems to
have fizzled under it's own illogic, just like
communism did:-)) These included the Crusaders and
the Inquisition types of ancient times, and Hitler,
Mussolini, Stalin and the Mafioso more recently.

Aristo writes:

Mario, one thing that experience has taught me is
that when Quantity is the focus, there is a
definite compromise on Quality. Your writings
are an epitome of that lesson. That doesn't mean
that you cannot produce quality. Your answer to
Sunith's question on what next for India's economy
was a gem that made it the first MG piece that I
saved for future reference. I hope you can give us
 more gems like that.

Mario responds:

Unfortunately, I have no way to respond to a
gratuitous and meaningless generality like the first
part of your last paragraph. However, if you can cite
some specifics where quality was compromised by
quantity I would definitely consider it.

For example, how am I supposed to restrict my
responses when people CONTINUE to look for brutality
and repression in the Communist Manifesto, when

a) common sense should have told them that it is
IMPOSSIBLE for a state to force a whole society to be
egalitarian across the board without brutality and
oppression, and

b) even after all the real world evidence that ALL
communist regimes were brutal and oppressive by
necessity, and the two

NEW DELHI: It is becoming increasingly likely that OBC reservation in
admission will be confined to government-aided institutions, even as unaided
institutions like Symbiosis, Manipal Academy and Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research may be left out of the quota umbrella for now.

The government has also decided to roll out quota in aided institutions— IITs,
IIMs, AIIMS,Indian Institute of Science, National Institute of Design, School
of Planning and Architecture, among others — in a phased manner.

In a resolution of sorts within the divided government, two draft reservation
bills — one for aided and another for unaided institutions — have been
prepared by the HRD ministry and sent to several ministries for comments. But
indications from within the government are that while it would press for the
reservation bill on aided institutions in the Monsoon session itself, the one
on unaided institutions might get delayed.

Indian state bans Coke, Pepsi
Last Updated Wed, 09 Aug 2006 13:01:50 EDT
CBC News

A state in south India has banned the manufacture and sale of Coke, Pepsi,
Sprite and other soft drinks, claiming they contain high levels of pesticide
residues.

The state of Kerala is the first in India to take such action against the
local subsidiaries of Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc., two bottlers that
account for nearly 80 per cent of India's $2-billion US soft-drink market.

Four other Indian states have already banned the sale of the soft drinks in
schools, colleges and government offices, while several other states have said
they are examining the issue.

Re: [Goanet] 'DKA's Statement NOT expose tacit understanding

2006-08-09 Thread Miguel Braganza

  Dear Fausto-bab,

Have no such fear as expressed by the 'alleged' President of KBM, which
Shridhar Kamat is definitely not! The allegation is made by an alligator that
is party to permiting a quasi-official status to Marathi in OLA, 1987. Konkani
in Roman script does not even have that status. That shows how much more they
love the Devanagri script over Konkani language. Konkani in Devanagri and
Marathi [also written in Devanagri] are bhai-bhai all the way since 1987. Why
do the allegators shed crocodile tears NOW ?

On 07 August, 2006 in Margao, Mr. Wilson Mazarello [Wilmix], the President
of DKA, had this to say in context of the quote attributed to him by Ms.Melba
Mergulhao-Carvalho Antao in the Goan Observer of 5-11 August on page 6, Goan
Observer person called me on the phone, asked me some questions and then went
ahead to misquote me. I requests the journalists not to do this to anyone.
Melba seems to be a confused old lady. I do not know if she knows to read or
write Konkani in any script. Perhaps, her fellow columnist who was present at
the Press Conference where the allegation was made, could enlighten us on the
subject.

Marathi is already there in the OLA,1987. The DKA, to the best of my
knowledge, is agitating for inclusion of Roman script for the Official
Language of Goa, Konkani. What does Dalgado KONKANI Akademi have to do with
Marathi? The Goa Marathi Akademi is given Rs.30.00 lakhs grants per annum to
protect the rights of Marathi. DKA gets nothing. Both are registered as
Societies/NGOs. And one thought that KONKANI was the SOLE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE
of Goa State. It seems like Marathi is superior to Konkani in Romi in Goa. It
is the SCRIPT that matters, not the LANGUAGE.

  Viva Goa.

he alleged.Speaking under a unified banner called Konkani Ekvott, which
