Hi,

It is nice and surprising to hear that Goa Tourism Development
Corporation is using our own Konkani Singer Lorna Cordeiro has been
given an opportunity to promote Tourism in Goa. It is always said that
truth will always prevail and after long 23 years of waiting the Romi
Konkani singer like Lorna have a say in the promotion of some
govt.oriented programes.

Konkani was given an official status by the Goa govt. after the death of
seven konkani martyrs during the language agitation but the people who
had sacrificied so much to make the Konkani as the Official Language of
Goa was given a step motherly treatment and always tamed as the second
class citizens of Goa. Pedro Ladru and Paskin is treated like outsiders
but the Vishnu, Shambu and Sushma is always given the oppoortunity and
first class treatment. Yes we are made to suffer for jobs,
positions, schemes, and even forced to change our culture, Some
of us were systematically forced to leave our mother Goa and settled
in other countries, WA Wa what a Congress Govt. in Goa ? Anyway HAPPY
GOA DAY FROM MIDDLESEX UK.

[Goanet] Echoes?

Echoes from a recent Goanet debate? FN

QUOTE

Madhav reported a recent high-level meeting between the RSS and
Jamaat-i-Islami. After two and one half hours, he said, “we had made
clear” to them that “our whole thesis is that pluralism shall be
respected and all religions are equal.” But, “this was not acceptable
to them.” They said Muslims cannot accept the idea that “all paths
[to god] are true.” “We embrace all … all are true.” So you see, this
is the true Indian culture, all embracing, all accepting, all
inclusive. Those kinds of Muslims are the ones who refuse to accept
that other paths are equal to theirs; they are not Indian, because
this exclusivity is not the true Indian culture. With this he returned
to the 5,000 year Indian culture, the essence of India, “the soul of
India,” Hindu civilization, which is what Hindutva stands for.

Workshop on ‘Khell-Tiatr’ to be held

Kala Academy Goa in collaboration with Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) will
organise a workshop on ‘Khell-Tiatr’ on Sunday, 29th August 2010 from 10
am to 1 pm at the Black Box, Kala Academy Goa, Campal, Panjim.

There is a need to preserve the Goan Khell-Tiatr in its true form and
therefore the need to organise such a workshop arises. Nowadays there is
a lot of confusion in the minds of tiatr lovers about the format of
‘Tiatr’ and ‘Khell-Tiatr’. Kala Academy and TAG feel that these two
distinct forms should be preserved the way they were staged in the past.

Shri.Antonio Moraes, Shri.Vitorino Pereira, Shri.Patrick Dourado and
Shri.Ligorio Fernandes, the veteran artistes from the field of
‘Khell-Tiatr’ will guide the participants. Those interested are
requested to confirm their participation on or before 27th August 2010

‘Khell-Tiatr’ lovers are requested to take advantage of this Konkani

the country to BRITISH for administration.

NEHRU could not get the NOBLE PRIZE because of INVASION OF GOA! It was
a curse on him and others who planned it as all of them died soon after.

Nothing "totally wrong" about this. To my mind, it fits in perfectly
well with a polytheistic religion (if Hinduism can be called a
'religion'... I see it more as a coalition of religions and beliefs).

Likewise, I see nothing wrong with Fr Ivo believing that his faith is
the only true road to salvation. This is obviously the required belief
for a monotheistic faith like his.

It is one thing to expect all religions be treated equally before law
http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20100710/local/hindus-seek-pope-s-intervention-to-bring-equality-of-religions-in-malta

And quite another thingy to expect that believers in different
religions are going to adapt their beliefs to suit what seems "right"
and "egalitarian" in a 21st century context!

This is an argument that sounds very logical (from the RSS), but I
can't understand how Vaidya expect another religion to change its
basic characteristics to suit his demands:
"They accept the unity of God but they divide the populace into
Momins, Kafirs, Christians, heathens. The point is that Christianity
as well as Islam should accept the declaration adopted by the UN
Millenium Peace Summit in August last year at New York which says that
all religions are equal and condemn violence in the name of religion."

I think the religious perspective is one thing, while the
political/Constitutional position is another. I disagree with
Santosh's attempts to mix both up, or the suggestion that one's
religious views would be decided by the State's approach to a
[parallel] matter. FN

You seem to be mixing up issues here between what is a practical
policy for a secular State (particularly one like India) to adopt, and
what Fr Ivo (as a believer in a monotheistic religion) has a right to
personally believe if he so chooses.

I've made my point. Gnight. --FN

*It is wrong what Santosh is trying to say: In an interfaith dialogue
each believer brings forward his/her own faith and scriptures, without
trying to impose but only exposing. Each one is convinced of the truth of
his/her own religion. In the religious pluralism, one cannot say that all
religions are equally good. The aim of the dialogue is to learn from each
other and contribute for a better society.

Re: [Goanet] Why controversy?

2010-08-18 Thread Ivo

From: "U. G. Barad"

Fr. Ivo while concluding his posting on subject titled "Why controversy?"
(Goanet Digest, Vol 5, Issue 863, Message: 11, dated: Mon, 16 Aug 2010)
wrote: "I do admire him. An apology is required. Such an artist,
musicologist, theologian, indologist, polyglot does not deserve such an
ill-treatment".

My response: Fr. Ivo paying his respect to Prof. Jose Pereira is quite
appreciating. It would have been nice if Fr. Ivo was to specify from whom
he
expects/expected apology rather than just writing "An apology is
required".

***Dear Dr.U.G.Barad, You are requesting a wrong person to do a wrong thing.
I am not a police man nor a law and order authority. You said some time
back that
the government will set aright all the social evils. Now it is up to the law
and order authorities
to capture the culprits and punish them. If they have conscience, let them
apologize to our good Friend,
Prof.Dr.José Pereira, whom they have threatened to kill by decapitation...
The spokeswoman said that
she had no connection with those who came up with threats to the members of
the Xavier Historical Centre.
Who knows it? I found her a simpleton, when she spoke publicly: "I am not
learned, but from the LITTLE that
I read of the Scriptures I can say that your interpretation is TOTALLY
WRONG!"... Was it wrong? She was
challenging a man of authority in Hindu Scriptures. Therefore, whoever has
insulted Prof.José Pereira should apologize.
If you have any connection with them, you can help the law and order
authorities.

Regards.
Fr.Ivo

Fr. Ivo's above high-lightened write-up forced me to ask his views on the
painting displayed at:
http://www.newsofap.com/newsofap-6248-25-jesus-christ-with-cigarette-beer-ne
w-delhi-school-testbooks-show-newsofap.html
***I could not get the painting from the server. But my answer would be as
follows: What is the purpose of painting Jesus with cigaretter and beer (I
do not know what else is there)? Jesus was drinking wine together with other
Jews, but he was not smoking cigarette (no mention at all). The question is:
What is the intent of the artist? Is it to insult him? It is not historical.
Or is it to show him as a revolutionary? Jesus was dining with people of all
kinds, even sinners (tax-collectors), for Jesus came to save all sinners. He
was a revolutionary in his ways, and therefore, if it is to show that Jesus
was human (though he is the Son of God), and was mingling with the people,
yet distancing from them, I would have no problem...
As I said, art is to be interpreted. But if it is to show him as a
"drunkard", that would not be historically accurate. We know from the
Gospels, in the parable of the children in the market place, that he was
called a "drunkard and a glutton" (cf. Lk 7:34: "The Son of Man has come
eating and drinking; and you say, `Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a
friend of tax collectors and sinners"; see Mt 11:16-19), because Jesus was
behaving normally with the people as a normal man, yet people could see in
him Master, Messiah and God. He was questioned, when he said: "The Father
and I are one." Once again the people picked up stones to kill him. Jesus
said, "At my Father's direction I have done many good works. For which one
are you going to stone me?" They replied, "We're stoning you not for any
good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God." (cf.John
8:12). Yes, he was really God.

Regards.

Same with the Ottawa hi-commission: excellent service. They even call

Incidentally, have you used the Kanadian consular services overseas?
Let me tell you, 6/7-on-10!!! Trust me.

I heard they even take 'hafta' in Delli for doing big jabs!! Not in

anyone had proof, that would be scandalous back home!

Ofcourse, this is besides being raci(t and discriminatory. And the

Churchill bab, you are making a grave mistake by portraying only your daughter
Valanka as candidate of Benaulim constituency. You should also push your son
and
wife too, as we ignorant Goans need leaders like you, who can change the
parties
as and when you like, but will never leave the aam admi.

Yes, Churchill bab is surely making a grave mistake by portraying his daugher
Valanka as Benaulim constituency candidate come what way but must also enter
his other family members in other constituencies. After all he is
indispensable, a true patriotic Goan and sincere Goan leader!!! However as in
the past he should not make statements that he did not want to be in politics
but was forced into it and call Goans names and later on deny. If he is
wanting his daughter or any other family member to be in politics it is only
for his own selfish motives and to amass more wealth.

Valanka spoke in agreement with her father's assessment about her. "My
work will do the talking first and only then you may cast your votes
in my favour," she said.

Like a true politician, Valanka will speak loud and clear about protecting and
saving Goa, but the moment she, if elected will be a different person
altogether and all her promises disappear. When things go right for them they
will sing the praises of the ruling party and no sooner things go wrong abuse
the party and search for another party. The Goan voters should see through the
game and make sure they cast votes carefully to deserving candidates and teach
the politicians a lesson that they cant be taken for a ride again.

Re: [Goanet] United we Stand.

2010-08-18 Thread Tony de Sa
Like Dan, I too attended with my family. Meant to write about it and was
going to go about it but Dan fore stole me. ;-)

I felt the play was fine. The social messages were strong. Anti caste, Anti
corruption and very much in tune with the scenario of today where
politicians mislead the masses and are re-elected time again and yet again
even though in truth they are unworthy. The social scenario where the feudal
system is crumbling and the social order is changing was well depicted. I
also felt that the audience was more restrained (as befitting the audience
of an English play and upper middle class pretensions as in "we are not
amused") unlike a lively Konkani teatro audience which claps, cat calls,
whistles, asks for encores and so on.

Tomazinho deserves kudos for the fine work he has done. The lead ladies, as
Dan says, were superb. The sets were great and the lighting did not leave
any thing to complain about. Intentionally or not, the pig joke suited the
present day's "barrao's" line of thinking (U know who I mean :-0 ) The
comedian Santan who play the role of a deaf person was great and so was the
bhatkar. On the whole the cast did very well and ought to be congratulated.

Kala Mogi should keep up the good work and should be encouraged.

Then there was the usual critic or two who found fault with the accent and
the diction. But then this is India and as long as what was presented was
understandable, and in good Indian English, I personally find nothing wrong
at all. If Indian English is good enough for International call centres,
then what is the problem. If Canada can have a Canadian English and
Australia Australian English, Scotland and Ireland their own brand of
English, then why not Indian English?

Kala Mogi, Tomazinho and Irene, We look forward to seeing some more shows.

Cheers

Comments : Camilo Fernandes

The services offered by Indian High Commisions abroad just like in India are
never satisfactory and scope for lots of improvements to be done. I feel due
to the heavy crowds thronging these Commissions, they could have an exclusive
counter where appointments could be booked either online or on phone apart from
the adding extra counters to the existing ones.

In India the accepted fact is no matter whether your papers are in order or
not, it is only money that can get the work done i.e. money talks. Abroad this
may not be so, though stray incidents by touts/agents/knowing staff may be
there. Often the people themselves are to be blamed for this sorry state of
affairs. The same Indians back home and Indians abroad are a different breed
altogether. The reason maybe is when they arrive here they find a different
disciplined culture and have to adapt to it. There is discipline everywhere,
no corruption, politiness, thank you, after you, patiently queing and please
are common terms in use here while back home it is survival of the fittest -
use your might to board the trains/buses, break queues to be attended rather
than waiting patiently, pay bribes to get work done and correct a wrong,
urinate anywhere and throw garbage anywhere i.e. anyone's backyard except your
own. The same even educated Indians while working in Gulf and abroad will not
dispose of garbage anywhere but in designated places maybe due to discipline,
fear of strict laws and sign boards in Gulf which shows penalty would be
levied. They are totally disciplined and enjoy quality life abroad but when
they return they revert back to their original self i.e. do any wrong and get
away with it. They will respect other countries but treat their own motherland
as garbage or junk - urinate, spit and throw rubbish anywhere.

I must mention that when I applied online for my OCI , I got very good service
and got it by special delivery post within 2 months or so without visting
London. This was 3 years ago and I hope the service has remained the same
or improved. When I was in Mumbai and had gone to the British embassy, I found
that they have given all the work regarding visas, etc. to agencies and was
surprised to see how efficiently they were run. There was no rush, many
counters, prompt and top class service.

Dev borem korum.

[Goanet] Polluters must pay up: Ramesh

2010-08-18 Thread Elvino Rodrigues
The Editor
Herald
Panjim Goa.

Sir,

In the news report by PTI, Mumbai, Environment and Forest Minister Jairam
Ramesh said the Law demands that the "polluters must pay up" (Herald, 15
Aug) in reference to oil slick caused due to collision of the two ships off
the Mumbai coast. He further stated that "The Ministry and the Central
Pollution Control Board are talking to law firms to file a case against the
Shipping Companies involved. He also said the Government is in the process
of assessing the environmental losses and also planning to compensate the
fishermen who got affected.

In line with the above, why not Salgaonkars also should be paying for the
disaster and loss caused due stranding of "River Princess" off the coast at
Candolim? The same law must be applied and demand from Salgaonkars to
compensate for every loss caused to Government and People of Goa due to
their irresponsibility and negligence.

It is to be noted that every vessel in the waters world over are insured by
the owners with Insurance Companies for each and every accident and such
losses can be easily recovered by the Owners of the vessels involved from
the Insurance Companies.

Therefore, Government of Goa must penalize Salgaonkars and demand every
loss from them to compensate all the expenses and losses caused due to the
incident.

I agree with Eric on New York consulate.

If someone asked me ten years ago about the level of customer
satisfaction at the NY Indian consulate, I'd give it a miserable
score of 2 out of 10.

However, in 2010, it's an entirely different situation. Now I'd give
it 9 out of 10.

The NY consulate out-sourced the application collection, fee
processing, passport, document checking and validation to a third
party at a totally separate location in Manhattan.

Further, you go online, fill in your details, print the application,
pay fees, take a desired appointment date and time and you are done.
The is no manual intervention.

On the appt. date, you simply drop off your documents and pick up your
stuff a few hours later the same day. No long waits and other awful
stories to deal with.

All OCI application processing was done online. I had to make just one

Re: [Goanet] Can Jose Pereira be anti-Hindu?

2010-08-18 Thread icsouza
Dear Dr.U.G.Barak,
Any one of any religion needs help from the State when s/he is poor, weak,
persecuted (the principle of subsidiarity). When Catholics, Muslims or Hindus
are persecuted as a religious community, the State has to come to their rescue.
The State will help the Catholics, Muslims or Hindus that are persecuted. If
Hindu temples are demolished by anti-social elements, the State will come to
their rescue. Therefore, it is wrong to say that the State does not look at all
at the religious identity of the citizens. It can be wrongly interpreted when
it is the case of Catholic Dalits, for example: The State does not give
reservation to the poor Catholic Dalits, because Christianity does not accept
the system of oppressive casteism. But in this case Dalits should be helped
because they are poor. In case they are rich and powerful, the principle of
"creamy layer" takes precedence.
Regarding the point of compulsion to believe, Hindus believe that all religions
are equal, which is totally wrong.

[Goanet] Can Jose Pereira be anti-Hindu?

2010-08-18 Thread U. G. Barad
In reply to a question "Why is "all religions are equal" a wrong concept in
a secular country?" (Goanet Digest, Vol 5, Issue 872, Message: 10, date:
Tue, 17 Aug 2010) Fr. Ivo summed up saying ".Not all routes are equally
good, not all scientific theories are equally good, not all therapeutic
drugs are equally good. All religions cannot be equally good..." and lastly
he concludes saying ".Why is it that so many intellectuals have chosen
Catholic religion".

Concluding line used by Fr. Ivo confused me more on Catholic religion after
reading contradictory statements which are available at:
http://www.seesharppress.com/20reasons.html

Hope Fr. Ivo trashes out all the 20 points written against Christianity as
religion in the web-link provided herein above.

Scholars who understand and respect the constitution of India, such as the
prime minister of India reject the claim that the concept that "all religions
are equal" is wrong in a secular country. He believes correctly that the
secular Indian constitution recognizes that all religions are equal. Here is
his quote from a speech he gave at the South Asian Inter Faith Harmony Conclave:

Please see: http://pmindia.nic.in/speech/content.asp?id=524

QUOTE
When we say our Constitution is secular, we mean that it espouses the
separation of religion from politics and governance. Equally, it means that the
Constitution accords equal status to all religious faiths. The idea of equality
is important
...All religions are equal, just as all human beings are equal. When we view
each other as equals, we try to live in harmony.
UNQUOTE
..Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India

Great thinkers such as Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi have also espoused the
equality of all religions.

Cheers,

Santosh

P.S. BTW, the statements on scientific theories and therapeutic drugs below do
not make any sense at all, in terms of relevance or analogy.

[Goanet] Cheers to the First Possible 'People's Panel' contested forthcoming Mapusa Municipal Elections.

2010-08-18 Thread floriano

Terribly encouraged by the 'Arvind Kerjiwal' and 'Ms. Swati' generated
discourse at the Rotary Club Sponsored Manoshanti Hotel recently, the need
to make 'Gram Sabhas' at Panchayat level and 'Mohalla Committees' at
Municipal level stronger to bring in actual DEMOCRACY to this country/state
where no DEMOCRACY worth it's salt exists, the PEOPLE OF MAPUSA are
deliberating among themselves the pros and cons of organizing themselves to
contest the next Mapusa Municipal Elections on a ' PEOPLE'S PANEL' basis as
proposed by our 'article' on 'Panel' based elections to the self governing
bodies.

The said article is available at
http://www.goasu-raj.org/gen/articles/70.asp

We wish the people of Mapusa all the very best. If only this attempt is
made to succeed, the Mapusa Town and most importantly the Mapusa Market and
the Mapusa River will benefit enormously, as the rotten state of affairs
presently existing, and which has been existing for decades, will certainly
get a breath of fresh air and stop the parallel economy generated for the
luxury of the individual Council members rather than for the benefit of the
People of Mapusa.

Needless to say that the People of Mapusa will never opt for anything else
as and when the power of the people is demonstrated to work wonders.

A special thank you to the people of Mapusa for being the first to embark
on this very important and sensitive project and wish you God Speed in this
very serious and constructive decision making process which could be the
shot in the arm for the whole of Goa.

history in the Vatican's records for this just cause.

Don't miss this opportunity to help a Goan saint achieve his rightful honour

people like you who helped his cause.

You have made it the People's Petition. Please do not stop. Please forward to

The 300th anniversary of the death of Blessed Joseph Vaz (born Goa, India) is
fast approaching on January 16, 2011. Our Joseph Naik Vaz Institute has worked
to publicize his life and Cause since 1980, when we incorporated in California
as a 501(c)(3) in the State of California. We ask for your support of our new
Petition to the Pope, His Holiness Benedict XVI, asking that Blessed Joseph Vaz
be canonized for the 300th anniversary of his death.

Canonizations are in part a result of an outpouring of support from ordinary
people. The Pope can grant the exception to the miracle for the case of a
Martyr if enough people show that we care. Your signature to this Petition will
help to send the people's support to the Pope for Blessed Vaz' long delayed and
just canonization. Together we can make this canonization happen.

Please sign your First AND Last name to the petition.

300 years is a long wait for a Catholic Saint and Blessed Vaz could be on the

not have to be Catholic).

Norteiro people are people who live in the former Portuguese colony of North
Konkan ( Bombahia, Bombay, Mobai, New Bombay, Salsette island, Gorai-Manori,
chaul-revadanda, korlai, thane, raigad, vasai, bacaim and Daman & Diu). The
term Norteiro has fallen into obscurity, since the people now call
themselves either East-Indian, Koli or Damanese.

The Kolis & EastIndians did NOT agitate to change the name of Bombay to
Mumbai. The people who changed the name of Bombay to Mumbai are known by the
name Maharashtrians not Mumbaikars. The marathi people have monopolized the
name 'Maharashtrian' for themselves.

The EastIndian have been given OBC status but the people in the District
collectors office have no idea who eastindians are due to which most
eastindians find it difficult to get the OBC certificate.

2010-08-18 Thread Gabe Menezes
minus a blouse. I was watching the Heritage Channel on Victorian India;
it was stated that Annette Akroyd started a school for Hindu girls and
promptly got them to dress properhmmm cover themselves with a blouse,
under their Sarees.

These interfering outsiders are responsible, for changing our dress style
and more importantly for robbing us of our right to have a good glimpse!

Also the more important aspect of the programme was the liaison of an Indian
sweeper and the wife of an English Lawyer. They were caught in the act. The
husband beat his wife up to within an inch of her death. The sweeper was
framed for this and was eventually tried and sentenced to prison in the
Andaman Islands - in those days a death sentence. An acquaintance of the
woman, wrote a letter to the Governor years later about this perjury. He did
not bring the matter up. Upon his death the papers were discovered.

The incident prevented Indian Judges from being upgraded to hear cases
involving the whites. That's history, now can we revert to the Saree of old,
without a blouse?

'Cong ticket or not, Valanka in the fray'
TNN, Aug 16, 2010, 04.02am IST

MARGAO: The assembly elections may be two years away but PWD
ministerChurchill Alemao on Sunday sounded the bugle for the battle of
votes opening the election office of daughter Valanka Alemao whom he
once again portrayed as candidate of Benaulim constituency.

Significantly, Alemao made it known, albeit in a veiled comment, that
he may well be scripting a new and dramatic political move in the run
up the elections should Valanka be denied the Congress ticket by the
party high command. He dropped broad hints that if push comes to
shove, he would be compelled to exit from the Congress.

"Congress is a great party, and Sonia Gandhi is a good leader. But in
Goa there are some Congress leaders who act like thorns and create
problems (for me). When these thorns begin to create problems, I am
forced to leave the Congress party. My daughter Valanka will contest
the elections on the Congress ticket. But if she is not given a
Congress ticket, she would still contest on the people's ticket. You
need to have the people on your side to win elections, not the party,
nor the money," Alemao said.

Valanka, addressing the crowd, echoed senior Alemao's assertions. "I
will contest on a Congress ticket. Sonia Gandhi wants women to come
forward and so I am confident she will give me the Congress ticket.
But whether I get the Congress ticket or not, I will definitely
contest the elections," she stressed.

Valanka stated that she decided to plunge into politics on the request
of the people who urged her to "represent us in the state legislative
assembly first and then we will send you to Parliament". She exuded
confidence that her long years of social work would stand her in good
stead at the elections.

Alemao tried to justify Valanka's foray into politics to her natural
inclination towards politics coupled with her attributes conducive to
her political aspirations. "My daughter Valanka knows politics.
Politics has gone into her blood??? When I was an MP she would do the
rounds of Parliament and the Supreme Court to listen to the debates."

Valanka spoke in agreement with her father's assessment about her. "My
work will do the talking first and only then you may cast your votes
in my favour," she said.

Stating that the "the people of Benaulim have a place in my heart",
Alemao senior appealed to the people not to fall prey to "falsehoods
that are being spread (about bad condition of roads in the state)" and
assured that all roads in bad condition will soon be repaired. Urban
development ministerJoaquim Alemao too made a forceful pitch favouring
the Congress ticket for his niece. "Valanka will get Congress ticket
200%," said Joaquim.

[Goanet] Gawas backing illegal sand extraction: panel

2010-08-18 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye

BICHOLIM, AUG 18
Illegal extraction of sand under Amona Bridge is posing danger to the
bridge, besides destroying farming activities in the area, even as
local MLA Pratap Gawas has termed it a ‘political issue’.
It may be recalled that the illegal extraction of sand under Amona
Bridge is going on since last the four years. Farmers from the area
have also voiced their concern over the issue and termed it as
illegal.
The work of sand extraction is done in the government land and there
are several boats used for the purpose.
When this scribe visited the site, about 30 boats were lined up on the
shore, besides several heaps of sand was also seen at the site.
“This is totally an illegal activity carried out on the government
land and local MLA Pratap Gawas is supporting it,” Devkhadi Tenants
Association Amona Chairman Umesh Parab told Herald.
“About 45 farmers had to abandon farming due to this activity. Not
just this, but also they are involved in clearing the surrounding
forest area and filling it for the smooth movement of the trucks,”
claimed Parab.
After the incident, farmers through a memorandum complained to the
Bicholim mamlatdar. The PWD had brought to the notice of the mamlatdar
that the area adjacent to the road near Amona Bridge belongs to PWD
and transporters are illegally using its area without any permission
from the department.
Further, PWD officials had also submitted that due to illegal use of
government land, which was acquired for construction of the Amona
Bridge, has been continuously deteriorating due to sand extraction.
The department had also stated that there is an apprehension that the
activity will cause damage to the piers and abutment of the bridge.
Bicholim Mamlatdar Pramod Bhat accepting the suggestions of the PWD
had asked the department to construct a barricade or a gate so that
piers of the bridge are not damaged.
He had also ordered to construct a barricade on the mud road
approaching to the main highway so that the unauthorized movement of
vehicles should be stopped from the government land and also the
bridge should not be damaged.
After about five months from passing the order, the PWD constructed
the gates on the land, but failed to lock it.
When this scribe went to the site, the gates were wide open for the
movement of trucks.
“Recently, they build the gates but they never remain closed and this
is just an eye wash,” charged Parab.
When contacted over the phone, Pale MLA Pratap Gawas, who was in
Hyderabad, confirmed that there are about 75 persons, who are involved
in sand extraction.
“The activities are going on some 300 mtrs away from the pillars of
the bridge and might not be termed as a danger for the bridge,” said
Gawas adding “the entire thing has no substance and is politically
motivated.”
“The sand extraction work is going on everywhere in the State and we
cannot target them. The issue is raised by some farmers, who are now
denied money by the sand extractors,” stated Gawas.
When asked about the license of the sand extraction, Gawas said they
don't have any license. “They have applied for the license, but the
work is not harming the bridge,’ he added.
Meanwhile, the farmers have demanded the authorities to look into the
matter and stop the illegal sand extraction work in the area.

[Goanet] A Question to Goan NRIs: Are you a Goan or …?

2010-08-18 Thread JoeGoaUk
A Question to NRIs,   are you a Goan or…?

Fact:
Some time ago, I did bring up a case where a Son come to Goa
from London (see a link below) after many many years only to
sell off his ancestor’s house.
He even had a min. price tag in his mind and invited best offers
for his house.

And this is not just an isolated case,  there are many such
cases where legal heirs come down to Goa only to sell their
share in the ancestors’ house or properties.
Most  will have no interest in Goa, their birth place,  their motherland,
their roots etc etc
They have just one thing in their mind –Money, Money and more money.
Sell the house to the highest bidder.
Who you really think these people are -  Goans or ..?

This is what exactly Anthony Sylvester asks you and me
( particularly, London Goans)  in his latest traditional tiatr
 ‘TUM LONDONKAR vo GOEMKAR?'

Elder brother comes down to Goa not because he loves Goa but
for  making more money by selling his share of the ancestors’ house.
He said  ‘I don’t like Goa’, ‘I don’t like Goan people’
‘I am a Londonkar’ ‘I am a Bristish’ 'Make money on the house
and off I go'.. only to come back and deperately look for shelter for himself.

Almost all NRI related aspects of Goans including their typical mentality,
craze for acquiring Portuguese passport, White marriages,
NRI children/drugs  etc etc  very meticulously brought up in the tiatr.
A good entertainer with strong social message, not to be missed.

The tiatr had about 14 songs (solos, duets, Trio and Quartets)
- Two brothers Young Aliston and Aaron starts with the
opening chorus – the title song
- Wilson (Wilmix) and Sharon on recently held World Cup
She said Argentinians didn’t want to win as they didn’t want
to see Maradona running naked..
- A trio by Michael de Siolin, Seby de Quepem and Manuel Colaco-
Talked about mega project, garbage problem etc
- A Goan minister look alike Rons (See pic) as a minister says
‘You ask donations and we give but where this money coming from?
So we loot’
-  A duet by Lajja and Bushan – see pic
one likes Tiatr the other likes TV Serials
- Office Girl at a Call Centre by Sharon (I like it)
- A solo by Seby on dirty politicians
-  Young Conception on Goan Corrupt Police etc (see pic)
- The writer/Director Anthony Sylvester on tiatrists and musicians who
run after money deserting the directors in lurch  – see pic
- A duet by Jessie and Manuel as mother-Son - see pic.
where son says money can buy anything
- Solo by Michael de Siolim  explaining ‘Traditional tiatr’ see pic
- Quartet by Fatima, Lajja, Baptist and Bushan-
Minister tries to cover up Rape by offering huge amount
- Duet by Wilmix (Wilson) and Shaorn as doubting wife
- Young brothers again (Aliston and Aaron)
Ghanti and Goan, both criticizing each  other.

Besides, there were cantos and short songs by the
4 comedians along the road scene ‘poddo’

Other than the above singers/actors, there were others like
Ben Evangelisto, Hortencio Pereira, Effie, Rosario Botelho, Lipu etc

But where is Sabina?
Didn’t see her in her usual Mother, Mauxi or Aunty’s role
Finally spotted in an unique role,
(took a while to recongnise her though)
As comedian Ben Evangelisto says
‘when there is no electricity in the house, at night,
the only way to trace my mother-in-law is by her teeth’

See here  what I mean..

[Goanet] The Godses of Goanet

2010-08-18 Thread Domnic Fernandes

The following 'Letter to the Editor' appeared in today's oHeraldo:

Cyberspace has become the new killing fields of Goa’s ‘agent provocateurs’ and
character assassins. Their vicious taunts, like sniper bullets, have felled the
glitterati of Goa’s modern freedom struggle and pushed the charismatic and
fiery Dr Oscar Rebello into a ‘Wilde’ rage of resignation.

The punch line of every character assassin is: ‘It’s not that I love Oscar
less, but that I love Goa more.’ Oh Goa, how many crimes have been committed in
thy name… Recently, Goa’s soft spoken braveheart Patricia Pinto was the target
of a baseless slur, which tormented her into resignation from the TCP
committee.

Dear Oscar-bab and Patricia-bai; ask not what Goans can do for you, but what
you can do for Goa. In this very moment of despair, Goa is looking to your
leadership. Withdraw your resignations and be reborn in new ‘avatars’ to bachao
Goa in the true sense.

Let that be your finest hour. Let not the waft of an unintentional
whistleblower relegate you to oblivion. Give us an Independence Day gift. Save
us from this pseudo-democracy that has reached the brink of intellectual
bankruptcy.
