I have installed a new Seasonic 750 Watt Gold Power supply. This
computer has a Radon HD video card with a SIX port female plug. The
only six port plugs I see in my new PS box plug into the power
supply and are used for hard drives.
So can I just remove two of the 8 port male plugs to make it a six
port so it fits in my video card? I would just cut off two of the
plugs with my Dremal.
Thanks

No, don't do that you risk damaging your video card, PS, or entire
system. You should have a 6+2 PIN PCIe power cable, see
https://seasonic.com/focus-plus-gold/#cables for examples from Seasonic
and use the exact cables that came with the PS. Don't take a cable from
another PS and use it - there are no standards for the layout so it may
work but be miswired (even different models from the same brand are
different).

Actually, in my new Seasonic they do not include it in the modular
plugs. I am guessing they decided nobody is using that old video
cards so why bother including it.However, it occurred to me that
I have bought three of these in the last five years and I still have
all the modular plugs that came with those PS. My older Gold
Seasonic had one that I could plug into my new one so problem
solved! Thanks for the reply.

The panel in their 34" OLED is WQHD, which means native resolution of 3440x1440.

The 32", in contrast, is 3840x2160. I suspect both panels support 4k inputs,
but only the 32" can display every pixel in the signal. Most TV panels of
decent size these days are 4k or even 8k, but monitor-class panels are a
different story.

For me, the more important metric is PPI - the higher the PPI, the sharper the
text, and I'm ready for an upgrade.

I had a terrible experience with ASUS video cards the one time I purchased
them. I had two cards in one board and fans kept dying. It killed one of the
cards and my experience with ASUS support was awful. I switched to EVGA and
they were great but now they refuse to make anything NVIDA due to what they
considered price gouging.

Re: [H] curved monitors

2024-05-22 Thread Greg Sevart
I'm in the process of acquiring two of the ones I linked before, but I don't
have them yet or an ETA. I currently run two of these:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DWD38VX/ - and I got where I like the
curve, but two 34s is a bit much for what I find myself doing these days.

I like the monitors, but the PPI increase from 4k resolution and the contrast
increase from OLED are why I am upgrading. The Alienware is literally the
monitor I've been waiting on for years.

Window position is indeed a problem, related to DisplayPort deep sleep. I have
my monitors set to never turn off to avoid the issue, however, I'm still
running W10 - W11 supposedly addresses this problem. You wouldn't want them on
full-time with OLEDs for sure.

I am in the market for a new monitor. My last two primary monitors have been
very expensive high end monitors intended for graphics professionals. They only
seem to last for 3 to five years while my inexpensive monitors go on year after
year. So no more high end monitors.
I have always used multiple monitors but am now considering one very large
curved Ultra HD monitor. Anybody have any thoughts or experience with
these...comments, advice warnings?

I am in the market for a new monitor. My last two primary monitors have been
very expensive high end monitors intended for graphics professionals. They only
seem to last for 3 to five years while my inexpensive monitors go on year after
year. So no more high end monitors.
I have always used multiple monitors but am now considering one very large
curved Ultra HD monitor. Anybody have any thoughts or experience with
these...comments, advice warnings?

Re: [H] Linux file server Novice Linux user

2024-04-11 Thread Jamie Furtner
Yes, reading and writing NTFS is supported on more recent kernels. If
you're just reading data from existing drives it'll likely work ok, if
you want to read/write then it may be a bit rocky (as it's not as well
used as native filesystems, so there's more possibility of bugs). I
think you'll have a much easier time if you can switch to native Linux
disk formats, and remember that you can always use a Linux live image to
boot a machine to get data off of the disks. Also remember that Linux's
whole-disk encryption (called "LUKS") is not compatible with Windows
Bitlocker (and vice-versa).

I'd suggest OpenMediaVault to give you easier administration.
OpenMediaVault is Debian based, and the newest version "Sandworm" should
natively support NTFS disks. While you have time - maybe try it in a VM
and see how it installs, behaves, and ensure it'll give you what you need.

My guess when it comes to the "perfectly good Windows 10 computers" -
most people won't care until there's a big enough security problem that
it actually costs them in some way, or until browsers stop supporting
it, and there's something in an updated browser that doesn't work on
Windows 10 anymore. Browsers won't stop supporting Windows 10 for at
least 3 years, and then after we'll see what happens.

End users and business aren't going to want to throw away perfectly good

updates but after that it gets expensive and you end up at the same starting

Linux Questions

Can I use a NTFS format for any drives ... this would be easier to deal with if
something went wrong and I had to access the drive from a windows PC?

I have on occasion installed various versions of Linux in virtual machines and

Badly.  The Premier of Nova Scotia came down to tell the voters that his
hands are tied (they aren't) because the municipal councils asked for
consolidation, and he is honour bound to allow it.  Now in Nova Scotia,
the municipal governments serve at the pleasure of the province.  The
province makes all the rules that govern the municipalities, and those
rules require a study and a plebiscite when municipalities merge.  In
this case, the two councils (who never ran on the issue in the previous
election) asked for special legislation to avoid a plebiscite.
According to the premier, because they asked, he must do it.   He is
requiring a study by the UARB (Utility and Review Board) to look into
the financial implications.  The UARB is an appointed board, so that
isn't sitting well with voters.

It was an interesting meeting - between 500 and 600 people were there,
and people asked again and again for a vote on the issue, and the
premier basically said "you voted for the councils, they asked for the
legislation, we have to do it, it's not my fault, it's yours."

It was sort of a weird meeting, and shows me once again, that the best
way to deal with politics is to ignore it. :)

And this was about as OT as we ever got back in the 90s. :)

Let's be clear what the amendments do:
1)They stop the current council members from sitting on the Transition
Committee.  Since the vast majority of the population don't trust the Laurie,
Owen and their cronies, this is table stakes.   This gains Tim nothing in terms
of votes or trust, and he's spending EVEN MORE money on the process.
2)Even though we told them we don't trust our current Councillors to make this
decision for us, they responded by saying, ok, we'll have some non-elected
officials make the decision.  In what what world is this better?  They appear
to be sticking with the idea that voters are too stupid, too poorly educated,
and too emotional to vote on this, and that we should be quiet and let our
betters decided for us.

I was in a meeting yesterday with John Hannaford, the clerk of the Privy
Council and he repeated over and over that integrity, ethics and respect for
democracy were the hallmarks of good government. We've seen very little of
those from the Laurie, Owen and their cronies, and Houston isn't looking much
better right now.

Where is the UARB going to get financial information for their study? I'm betting they'll
be given a sunshine and rainbow stories from Laurie, Owen and the CAOs and will decide
"the finances look good".  This study is meaningless eyewash as far as I can
tell.

Re: [H] Update on your laptop

2024-03-21 Thread Thane K. Sherrington

Hi Jona,
I finally tracked down some sets of fans.  They are Lenovo
originals, so it's a bit of a crapshoot.  There is one set for $87.50
and one for 141.30.  Both are Chinese brands, so I have no idea if one
is better than the other.  They will take about two weeks to come in.
They would be $95 to install and we will also replace the thermal
compound to help with the cooling.
If you are interested, let me know which you would prefer and I'll
get it ordered.
If you don't want to replace them, let me know and I'll reassembled
your laptop.

Thanks,

Thane K. Sherrington

Re: [H] Weird keyboard problem on LG Gram laptop...

2024-03-06 Thread Bino Gopal
Heh yeah-I mean I was thinking the same thing...but pretty sure it's out of
warranty at this pint...guess I should look into that...

Though I have seen people complaining about having issues with failing
keyboards on these LG Grams and not being able to get them easily fixed-which
is weird as that's not something I've had much failure with on any of my other
laptops-lots of other things have failed like the screen hinge on my MSI
(multiple times) and the power and USB ports, but not keys randomly working/not
working like that...

And of course since I sent this it's both worked and stopped working, back and
forth completely randomly...and currently it's back to working since I can type
9(9(9(9( like this just fine... 😝

And the 7 key on the number pad started working again for the first time in a
while! 777! Cool!

Wish it was just consistent tho... :/

Ok this is SUPER WEIRD-the 9 key (and thus the left parentheses) started
working randomly today during the day for about 10 mins-I used both for like 10
mins today (tested it multiple times to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating) and
it was working fine!

Then a few mins after I tried it again and it wasn’t working again! So this
indicates that it’s likely some sort of weird software problem right? …or I
suppose it could be a weird random sticky hardware key problem…

Any idea here??

So this seems like a perfect HWG list question...

I have a weird problem that just started happening a few weeks ago on the
keyboard of my LG Gram laptop from 2021...

The 9 key across the top stopped working completely (I have to use the one on
the numeric keypad to type 9).

I also can't use the left parentheses, and AFAIK there's no way to get that
symbol without using the ASCII key codes for it, ALT-0028-X, but that
apparently doesn't work everywhere like in Google Chat as I tried it to no
avail (unless some knows some trick to make it work) and I had to paste this
one in from the Character Map, which looks like it was the wrong font/size
now... :P

Weirdly enough the 7 key on the numeric keypad also stopped working too. Those
are the only two keys that aren't working AFAIK...

So I was wondering...I usually have taken my much older IBM Thinkpads apart in
the past, and esp my last laptop, an MSI gaming laptop which had a lot of
issues with the cover hinge breaking-but I stopped needing to do that back in
2020 or so and I'm not sure this LG Gram is as forgiving at being opened...

Is my only hope to take this sucker apart and see if there's something stuck in
those keys and it's some sort of physical issue causing the keys not to work,
or is this possibly some sort of software short circuit as the keys feel fine
and it's weird that those two just randomly stopped working no...?

Any help/advice appreciated! TIA!

P.S. In the past I've had issues with some of the keys, maybe even the 9 key
itself not working or sticking and repeating, but banging on it a few times
usually got it working...

It works.  I use it all the time.

Set the username to the username environment variable (go to a command
prompt and type set username to see it).
Set the domain the the computername environment variable (go to a

Set the password.

I use it on a daily basis at work, so let me know if it gives you problems.

With regards to Linux gaming, I'll tell you hwhat, I've got a Steamdeck,
the (Linux based) SteamOS they use runs Windows binaries through the Proton
translation shim and it's pretty astonishing how well it works a lot of the
time.

The caveat is that there are some things that it just _won't_ run, often
falling foul of anti-cheat measures (Destiny 2 is a big casualty there)

Yep, with a 7800XT!

You're right, I think the Q6600 was last last PC from '09. The Z87-A from
'13 was in fact a some 4xxxK series chip. RIP =)

2023-12-05 Thread Greg Sevart
Fair enough. Definitely happy to send it along if the BIOS doesn’t work, and
not looking for any compensation for it.

It still has the CPU (3930K) and RAM (4x8GB G.Skill DDR3-2133) installed, which
I'd send with it.

The 8C/16T notation just means 8 cores with 2-threads-per-core SMT (in Intel
parlance, Hyperthreading) just like your IVB-E chip.

Thanks Greg! I appreciate the offer. However, I was looking at used boards on
EBAY when I discovered I could buy a new BIOS chip for 14 bucks...I was
surprised. So I ordered one last night. I think that may be my problem because
right after the board went out I was unable to even restore the BIOS with the
rescue flash feature. I completely agree with you as to the age of the
platform. But it is the computer I use with my TV to stream, record, browse,
and manage my security cameras. It has been very nice for that purpose and it
is customized and tweaked for my needs and I am lazy and don't want to redo
everything. So if the new BIOS chip doesn't do the trick I will take you up on
your offer.

On Black Friday I did buy a replacement for my TV PC on Amazon. I have used a
quad core Celeron NUC now for years on a kitchen PC and I think they are great
so I was looking to buy a I5 version to replace my broken system. But I ended
up buying this Beelink SER5 MAX, Mini PC Ryzen 7 5800H (8C/16T, Turbo 4.4GHz),
32GB DDR4 RAM 500GB PCIe3.0 SSD Desktop Mini Computers Support 4K@60Hz Triple
Display/WiFi 6/BT5.2/DP+HDMI+USB-C/USB3.2/RJ45 LAN on sale for for $309...now
priced at
$459https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BYJKD2BX?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

I know nothing about Beelink or Ryzen CPUs but I am amazed that they could put
this much tech and performance in such a small package = 4 X 4x2.5 inches.
This supports three 4k monitors and I could use this as my primary computer. I
haven't even tried it yet. I don't know if this was a good deal or not. Are
these reliable and what is the deal with the cores. What is meant by 8 cores \
16T mean? Is this 16 virtual cores?

Truthfully this is probably the most correct answer--while a fine system in its
day, the P9X79 platform is easily eclipsed even with the most budget-friendly
builds today.

That being said, I just went and found my old P9X79 WS board. It's been a few
years since it's been in service, but you are welcome to it if you want to try

My recommendation would be all new everything and check your components once

Re: [H] P9X79_WS with i7-4930K has failed me

2023-12-05 Thread Brian Weeden
Great to hear from you all :)

I am also (finally) in the market for a new build, although it’s only been
5 years for me since I put together an Intel 8700k build and not 10 like OP
:)

I was looking for a new build that will last another 5 years (hopefully)
and given that Intel has said the current LGA 1700 is only going to support
one more generation I am also going with AMD for the first time ever. Part
list:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rs4YmD

Not included are the case (Cooler Master Silencio) and video card (Nvidia
3070Ti) that I will be carrying over from my current build.

This new build not only uses the AM5 socket, which AMD claims it will
support for at least two more gens, but the X670 chipset that supports PCI
5.0 for both expansion cards and NVME sockets. That means it will hopefully
support a couple more generations of new video cards as well as the next
gen of SSDs:
https://www.pcworld.com/article/1676119/pcie-5-ssd-5-reasons-upgrade.html

BTW, if you guys haven't discovered it yet, there's a pretty great
community of PC builder enthusiasts over at
https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/

Re: [H] P9X79_WS with i7-4930K has failed me

2023-12-04 Thread Greg Sevart
Truthfully this is probably the most correct answer--while a fine system in its
day, the P9X79 platform is easily eclipsed even with the most budget-friendly
builds today.

That being said, I just went and found my old P9X79 WS board. It's been a few
years since it's been in service, but you are welcome to it if you want to try
a replacement board.

I was wondering if anyone was still using the list. Hey Thane :)

My recommendation would be all new everything and check your components once
you have a running system. New cpu/mobo at least. If you know anybody with
spare parts you could try to figure out what is still working but it will take
more time

I'd try a single DIMM in each socket. Does this motherboard have a RAM
config button (some do). If so, try that.

Have you tried a different power supply? I've had power supplies which
will power up the motherboard but not allow it to boot.

You are showing your age.  They are DIMMS now. :)

I'd try a single DIMM in each socket.  Does this motherboard have a RAM
config button (some do).  If so, try that.

Have you tried a different power supply?  I've had power supplies which

FWIW on my personal machines I"m still running Win10 (and I've used GRC's
handy little InControl utility to get
it to shut up about the upgrade notifications). But that's because a)
they're old (still running a 8700k on a A370 mobo) and b) I don't see much
additional value in Win11 yet.

But at some point I will make the leap to take advantage of the free
upgrade and the previously mentioned lack of security patches. Perhaps just
before I build a new machine...

In my experience, W11 is flakier than 10, and a bit slower.  When it
goes wonky (gets trapped in a boot loop for instance, or a repeated
explorer.exe crash) there doesn't appear to be a way to fix it other
than a fresh install.  I'd avoid it unless you really need it.

Honestly, W11 has been fine. My guys at work have done >180 Win11 deployments.
We have not done in-place upgrades - these are all either new hires or machine
swaps. Other than MS continuing to make WSUS difficult, nothing really notable
to report - with the exception of the start menu. On my machines I run a start
menu replacement (StartAllBack), but we aren't deploying that to others. I did
the same to W10 with Classic Shell, but it is fully broken with W11 so I had to
switch to a different solution.

Win10 22H2 will be supported by updates until October 2025 so you do have a
healthy runway yet.

unfortunately these are the same as other postings. The EULA will not accept
them unless they are an exact mirror of the CD with the correct name of the CD.
Almost all the iso s posted were created off a hard drive instead of the actual
CD. Original sealed CDs are available on Ebay but surprisingly at outrages
prices. For the kind of money they are asking I can buy an old laptop that
came with Win2K. What is the big interest in Win2K anyway?. I don't know if my
idea is even going to work so it is not worth spending that kind of money for a
CD. I may just have to rethink this.

And I know Microsoft 365 offers lots of ways to collaborate via Teams, but
everything I've seen is for only people in that domain. Not sure if there's

Right now, I like WD and Toshiba drives - both of which are really (now)
iterations of prior HGST technology. I have a number of 14TB WDs w/o issue so

really have anything other than anecdotal experience. I have more WD/HGST He8

Re: [H] Video pixel pushing issues with multiple monitors-and Zoom etc

2022-05-19 Thread Bino Gopal
Well so I solved the TV black bar issue:

I downloaded and run the Intel Graphics Command Center (I guess the equivalent
of the Nvidia Control Center for GTX cards) and I was able to select the TV and
there was a Scale option for it that had "Maintain Aspect Ratio" selected and
when I switched it to "Maintain Display Scaling" it seemed to reset the image,
and then the 1920x1080 image filled the screen and the black bars disappeared!

I switched it back to Maintain Aspect Ratio to test it, and it still stayed
full screen, so I guess whatever thing had happened to mess it up is gone now?
So weird...

Still doesn’t help with the Zoom/Discord lag, but I'm going to try your
suggestion next Jamie-thanks!

So no one has used one of those external Thunderbolt (since I have USB4.0 Gen
3x2, I figure that's the same as Thunderbolt 3 right?) external enclosures with
a discrete graphics card and can report back on how well it works...?

Have you tried forcing Zoom and Discord to not use graphics acceleration for
video? I've seen that make a difference with Teams and older Intel Graphics in
my Surface Book 2 (higher CPU utilization, but more stable overall was the
result). If the problem is just that you have the screens connected then this
isn't it, but I've found the acceleration to not be ideal on the SB2 depending
on the client app.

You should be able to use the Intel Graphics Engine tools to add custom
resolutions to help with the Samsung TV. I do that on my Surface Book with its
3240x2160 screen to cut the resolution down so I can use those resolutions with
games. The result is that the Geforce 1060 can much more easily keep up when
compared to native resolution as it's pumping
1/4 the pixels.

I'm still in a holding pattern as well. I have heard that you can migrate
your google voice stuff to a regular free google voice account gmail
account.

I may transfer my stuff to the office 365 family thing which is $100/year.
Will get me the 6 users I need, but I'm not looking forward to the process.

Yep, same here. Still trying to figure out what to do. I've read that
Google Voice tied to G Suite will also go away. The Voice that is for
Workspace is a different product, paid separately, and can't migrate to
from the free Voice (have to "port" my number to a cell service, then
back). I will need to migrate that over to a free gmail account.

My extended family uses G Suite so it's a major pain. Worst case, I'm
thinking we'll just do the discount Workspace for a while at
$3/account/month. Otherwise I'm looking at Google Domains for the email
and calendar part, which is basically the cost I pay now just to
register my domains.

Re: [H] Licensing and new computer upgrade/transfer questions...

2022-01-21 Thread Bino Gopal
Yeah, that's my concern...but I did do a cdkeys license for Mad Max (the game)
and it worked fine, so I'm wondering...

That's why I asked if anyone had any personal experience with either of the
sites below...

And it turns out that I had a Office Home 2019 license I bought back in Oct
2018 that I hadn't installed anywhere, so I ended up putting that on after
spending 2 hrs on the phone with Office advanced tech support doing a remote
session using Quick Assist (Paul, in Nigeria-who for the most part knew what he
was doing, which was very refreshing) and after completely uninstalling O365
and signing out of my account and signing back in, got the Home 2019 license to
take and the formatting/font/look is much better so I'm just going to use that
for now...

Still keeping O365 if I want to use the web versions on other machines as I do
get 1TB of OneDrive storage and that's what I pay for Google One (and I'm
paying for 2TB if icloud now that I think about it...only one I'm not paying
for is Dropbox lol!) and easy support, so it's worth it for me just for that!

Just be careful what you get from the cheap vendors.  My experience has been
that they will freely sell you an install off a volume license. This caused
problems with me everytime I moved to a new system.  The volume license had no
more installs and I had to call M$.  The other time I had a Win10 Pro key and

Anyway, to make it simple, I signed up for the Office 365 family plan ($100/yr)

ran into 2 issues:

1) First, on the old machine that had Office Pro Plus 2019 installed, it

versions. Do I need to uninstall Office 2019 first, anyone know?

Those instructions are just for PCs on the same network.

For remote access across the internet teamviewer, logmein, or similar is
what you'll need.

If you want to get all fancy you could go with setting up VPN between PCs
using something like hamachi.

was so expensive. Too much for something I will need for a week! Thanks Chris

Those instructions are just for PCs on the same network.

For remote access across the internet teamviewer, logmein, or similar is
what you'll need.

If you want to get all fancy you could go with setting up VPN between PCs
using something like hamachi.

Re: [H] Setting up a System for Sale

2021-12-06 Thread Steve Tomporowski
Thanks, Greg.  The person using this computer never did much with data,
only installing Mcafee over Windows Security (complaining on the
computer was a 'dog') and doing Facebook.  A reset should do fine.  I
was just concerned about the OEM key.  I've had lots of problems with
Office keys and activation.

luck with the activation troubleshooter.

If there's never been any data on it you care about, then a reset is a bit simpler:
Settings, Update & Security, Recovery, Reset this PC

Subject: [H] Setting up a System for Sale

Need some guidance.  I have an HP system I need to sell.  No data was put on it
and I've uninstalled a bunch of crap (it is an HP). I can grab the key off the
system, which is probably HP's OEM key.  If I sysprep it, will it validate the
OS (Win10) when I put the key back in?  Or is there another way to set up the
system for sale?

Thanks...Steve
