[ha-Safran]: Video

2011-10-19 Thread Chaya Wiesman
Dear Safranim,

We are looking for a movie called The Disputation: A theological
debate between Christians and Jews. We owned a copy which
unfortunately disappeared. I tried contacting Films for the
Humanities and Sciences which produced it, but they have discontinued
it since 2003 and no longer have any copies available.

If anyone has it in either VHS or DVD, we would appreciate being able
to borrow it. And if you know where you purchased it, that would
also be very helpful. I have been scouring the internet and haven't
had any luck.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Have a happy new year.

[ha-Safran]: Educational Resources and 34 Cool Videos for Sukkot

2011-10-19 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Sukkot is the Jewish holiday that commemorates how protective
Clouds of Glory surrounded the Jewish people after leaving
Egypt during the forty years of wandering in the desert.
It also commemorates how the Jews lived in temporary dwellings
during that same time.
Sukkot begins Wednesday night, October 12, 2011.

The Jewish Trivia Quiz
http://www.jewish-trivia.com
has 35 multiple choice questions about Sukkot.

What is the Hebrew date of the first day of Sukkot ?
What is another name for the Sukkot holiday ?
What does Sukkot commemorate ?
What is the minimum area of a Sukkah as defined in the Talmud ?
What is the maximum height of a Sukkah ?
What does the Aramaic word Ushpizin mean ?
Who gets called to the Torah reading on Simchat Torah ?

The above questions are examples from the multiple choice
Flash quiz. There are two levels of questions, two timer settings.
Both kids and adults will find it enjoyable.

Free Sukkot Clipart

Whether you need a picture for your child's class project,
a graphic for your synagogue, Hillel or JCC Sukkot
announcement, the Jewish Clipart Database has the pictures
for you. You can copy, save and print the graphics in
three different sizes.

Sukkot Cool Videos

As always I am struggling to find recent novels for Gr. 3-5 in
paperback for our Jewish Book Fair. Besides JPS, Pitspopany, Rabbi
Rocketpower, the Yaldah books and the Rebecca books, any other
suggestions from people? Is there a list our there that someone can
send me-did anyone compile a list of children's books for Jewish Book
Month/Jewish Book Fairs for this year? (I have looked at the AJL
notable books lists but the offering in chapter books for this age
range that have come out the past few years is very limited,
especially in paperback) Oldies but goodies would also be helpful
Thanks for your feedback!

[ha-Safran]: JPS

2011-10-19 Thread Zachary L. Grayson
As a former trustee of JPS, I applaud the move. JPS played an
invaluable role in the development of the American Jewish community
by sponsoring and promoting both the translation of classic texts and
encouraging critical research and literature when no one else was
doing so. It is a tribute to JPS that their success rendered them an
anachronism.

Once the Jewish community came into its own and there were many for
profit Jewish publishers and mainstream academic institutions able
and willing to perform the role that had previously been performed by
JPS. Jewish scholars no longer needed to turn to JPS to publish
their works when Penn, Harvard, Brown, Brill, Schocken and others
were available to them. What justification could there be for JPS to
use charitable funds to compete with other publishers - especially
where the other publishers had better distribution and marketing
networks? (As to those works for which there was no other
publisher, one has to question the value of the work.)

The JPS had, at one time, created monumental works of lasting
importance, the Tanakh being just one shining example. Today the
monumental works are being produced by others - Matt's Zohar
translation, the Schottenstein Talmud, the Yerushalmi and the
Steinsaltz Talmud for example. The academic works are being done by
academic publishers who have a greater cachet on an academic c.v.
than JPS. The popular works are being done by either Jewish or
standard publishers and are much more widely distributed than any JPS
popular work.

As to new Jewish literature, even JPS's own, such as Chaim Potok
turned elsewhere when it came to publishing their own Jewish literature.

Let us praise the founders of JPS for their success and applaud the
current trustees for their wisdom.

Zachary L. Grayson, Esq.

It is a truly sad event in the history of Jewish book publishing, especially
because it didn't have to be.

My company, Varda Graphics, has worked with JPS for many years; we had an
honor to be asked to do composition of some of the JPS most typographically
difficult titles, e.g. Hebrew-English Tanakh, Etz Hayim, Torah Commentaries
and others.

Given a chance, we could have enabled JPS not only survive but prosper in
this age of digital publishing and continue its awesome contribution to
Jewish life everywhere.

Hi Robin. This situation also occurs in larger academic libraries, like
ours. We do have an ongoing book sale for our students and faculty with
such materials. You might consider just keeping a table or cart of books
available to the congregation, asking them for a small donation or
telling them to help themselves. I also have developed a list of places
that I know will accept donations or might even purchase books from us.
I'm attaching it so that you can get some ideas from it.

Please send me a summary of the responses you get. I'd like to post it
on the AJL Wiki, http://ajlwiki.pbworks.com/w/page/1636998/FrontPage,

We have a small group of shelves in our library available for selling
used books. We sell all hardcovers for $1 and paperbacks for $.50 --
only rarely charge more if a book is especially valuable. Our goal
is not to get rich off these sales nor to bring in market value of
each book, but to find homes for the books, move them our of our
space, and make a small bit of money in the process.

Sadly, I do throw out some books from donations -- such as textbooks
(which don't sell well at all) and anything that smells moldy.

We also have a public library in town that runs a used bookstore -- I
sometimes give them our overflow, but they accept only harcovers and
also not textbooks. Again, sadly, I sometimes do discard mass market
paperbacks, if they are in poor condition and have sat on my sale
shelf for a long time with no interest. I know that shelters and
hospitals might be interested in some of our overflow or discards,
but I just don't always have the time to research who wants what and
make the deliveries -- perhaps you have a volunteer who might do this?

Last, but definitely not least, it is important for you to consider
writing up an acquisition policy that defines what types of materials
are suitable for your collection and that definitely includes
language about who has the final say as to what will be added to the
collection (in our case, that is me, the Library Director). This is
out fall-back protection if anyone questions why their donated books
were not added to the collection.

If anyone asks me first, before anonymously dropping off donations, I
always say that I will accept a SMALL donation (1 or 2 bags or boxes)
in GOOD conidition, as long as I have permission to sell whatever we
don't need for the collection. People rarely object to this.

[ha-Safran]: New Video: The Jerusalem Sukkot March

2011-10-19 Thread Jacob Richman
Hi Everyone!

Today I went to the Jerusalem Sukkot March on King George Street.
I took 25 video clips of the march and edited them into one
16 minute video.

I posted the video online at:
http://www.jr.co.il/videos/jerusalem-sukkot-march.htm

You can also view the video on Youtube at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ_kMFXy-LQ

Note: The first time you watch this video, there may be downloading
delays due to the large file size (506 meg). The second time you
watch it, the video will play smoothly from your local disk cache.
If your Internet connection is below 5 meg, the download may take
a long time.

If you like the video, please share it with friends and
give it a like on Youtube, Facebook or Google Plus.
Thanks!

Enjoy!

Moadim L'Simcha!

re: [ha-Safran]: Jewish Publication Society Sale Brings End to Era

2011-10-19 Thread agendler
It is a truly sad event in the history of Jewish book publishing, especially
because it didn't have to be.

My company, Varda Graphics, has worked with JPS for many years; we had an
honor to be asked to do composition of some of the JPS most typographically
difficult titles, e.g. Hebrew-English Tanakh, Etz Hayim, Torah Commentaries
and others.

Given a chance, we could have enabled JPS not only survive but prosper in
this age of digital publishing and continue its awesome contribution to
Jewish life everywhere.

[ha-Safran]: a set to give away

2011-10-19 Thread Amy Turim
Greetings. I'm doing the painful (but ultimately rewarding!) job of
culling our library collection as my space has been reduced. For
anyone who is interested, I have Israel Zinberg's series (minus
vols.9, 11, 12, 13), A HISTORY OF JEWISH LITERATURE. Hardback, the 9
books are in good condition.

Please contact me ASAP by email if you are interested. I'm glad to
pack them up and send them off – I only request reimbursement for shipping.
