[ha-Safran] a very basic query

2020-07-29 Thread Amy Turim via Hasafran
Almost embarrassed to ask…. Is there a reason to keep the check-out cards –
that is, the only version of a list -- of the books that have been culled
from our synagogue library collection? They are in NO order, and they are
crammed into two overflowing shoeboxes. I’m about to need a third box and
frankly, would like to toss them, but the former archivist in me is
concerned.

Is this a dilemma, or should I simply recycle?

Thanks very much for guidance on this.

[ha-Safran] the librarian's dilemma

2019-09-10 Thread Amy Turim via Hasafran
Dear colleagues.

My problem is not unique, but I’m stumped and am reaching out for your
assistance for any who can help.

My library has good coverage of Sholom Aleichem: a few different “Best ofs”
, a Treasury, and many story collections. MOST have never been borrowed,
and I see that the most recently checked out book was in 2007! I serve a
Reform Temple community, including a religious school, and a pre-school. We
are not an archive – and I am generally clear-eyed about pulling books that
are past their prime in terms of interest. Clearly, it’s time to
significantly cut back, but WHICH ARE WORTH KEEPING? I am no Aleichem
aficionado, but I do feel a responsibility to keep his name alive in the
library by having one or two of his works on the shelf.

Thank you for your help; I welcome any suggestions!

I’ve found a 1958 green, clothbound edition (9.5 X 7.25”) of
*ALL-IN-THE-FAMILY-UPTOWN

It’s taped up around the edges, stained and worn, and NOT in library-ready
condition, but I absolutely can’t toss it, and I wonder if there is a

glad to have this worn-out beauty?

I’ll gladly pay for shipping to a happy home… Please respond to me

[ha-Safran] ISO the right call number

2018-09-25 Thread Amy Turim
Surely this 2017 book lives in many of your libraries: *SURVIVOR CAFÉ; THE
Legacy of Trauma and the Labyrinth of Memory* by Elizabeth Rosner. Highly
praised, a Finalist for the National Jewish Book Award, and I can’t figure
out how to catalog it using the Weine Classification Scheme!
Unfortunately, Weine doesn’t list Trauma, Memory, or Collective Memory in
the Relative Index, and any of those would be useful in classifying this
book.

I’m stumped, and would prefer not to revert to shelving the book in the
Holocaust section because it’s broader than that. I reach out to you for

[ha-Safran] new book for children, RIDE HIGH WITH THE WAVE, by Sharon Solomon

2018-06-20 Thread Amy Turim
(I am happy to post this announcement of a new title by my friend, Sharon
Solomon

Amy Turim,

Librarian, Temple Emanuel

Kensington, MD

What do kids do these days when their sports events conflict with family
cultural and religious activities? Eleven-year-old backstroke rivals Ted
Richman and Hiro Kojima find themselves facing this problem in my book *Ride
High with the Wave. *

On Saturdays Hiro goes to Japanese School and Ted attends Sabbath services
with his family. The two boys join forces to get the swim meets changed to
Sundays. With advice from their grandparents in the form of Yiddish and
Japanese proverbs, Hiro and Ted form strategies to make this change happen.
Will they succeed? Will they resolve their rivalry?

*Ride High With the Wave *is a middle grade novel for ages 8-12. It deals
with a real-life situation children and families face today. The reader
will experience Japanese and Jewish holidays and traditions and swim meets
as Hiro and Ted continue their efforts. This book focuses on competition
and the clash of priorities in our society. This realistic fiction novel is
both multicultural and multigenerational and takes place in Pittsburgh.

I am the author of eight published children’s books as listed on my website
www.sharonsbooks.net. I was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in McKeesport. *Ride
High With The Wave *would be a great addition to the children’s collection
of your library.

Sincerely,

Sharon K. Solomon

cloth/hardbound in deep blue velvet, in a matching cloth/hardboard and

I already have a copy in my collection, and highly recommend this if you

Re: [ha-Safran] graphic "novel": PICTURE STORIEW FROM THE BIBLE

2018-04-03 Thread Amy Turim
In recent weeks we’ve had some spirited discussion about graphic novels,
and I had asked for recommendations. One title that came pretty well
recommended (and so I bought it) was “PICTURE STORIES FROM THE BIBLE, The
Old Testament in full-color comic-strip form,” edited by M.C. Gaines. I am
writing today to provide my – and my Education Director’s – strong
reactions.

I think this one is pretty terrible. The drawings as well as the writing
are outdated; it’s essentially an unaltered reproduction of the original
1943 publication. I don’t want to spend time listing what I see as
inappropriate or obsolete, but I do want to caution against ordering this
book without first taking a good look at it online.

(In the meantime, I’m ditching my brand new copy, so, is anyone interested?
I’ll happily give it to you -- all I ask is the cost of shipping.)

[ha-Safran] FOLLOWUP RE: my search for good "graphic novels"

2018-02-06 Thread Amy Turim
Hello All --- I was asked to report the responses to my original query
(see below), and I received *one* strong recommendation: *PICTURE STORIES
FROM THE BIBLE; The Old Testament in full-color comic-strip form*, edited
by M.C. Gaines.

I did purchase it but now that I have it in hand I am troubled by the
content and the presentation. Originally published in 1943, the copyright
was renewed in 1970 and 1979. If you see it on Amazon, many of the
comments are from adults who are thrilled to see the book they remember
from childhood. “Endorsed By Clergy Of All Faiths.” Extremely “old school”
, this really does look like a bound comic-book. While colorful and
action-packed, the drawings are old-fashioned and static, very different
from what we see in contemporary graphic novels. The Editorial Advisory
Council dates back to the original publication date (1943) and clearly
reflects those times – among other things, of the ten Advisors, none are
women.

On the other hand, this volume is inclusive and may be the only way some
children will learn the material. The librarian who recommended the book
told me that boys love it!

So, there you have it. Not my cup of tea, but maybe that’s just me.

offer something as a natural follow-up to the series. The Hereville books
are great for girls, but not so inviting to boys. Suggestions?

[ha-Safran] asking about a movie

2018-01-07 Thread Amy Turim
I’m wondering if any synagogue libraries carry the DVD titled *DEFAMATION*
by Yoav Shamir? One of our Religious School teachers would like me to
purchase it so he can show it to his class, and I wanted to check in with
other libraries. It’s about Anti-Semitism and I wonder if it’s appropriate
for 7th graders. (I’m sometimes surprised at what teachers think their
students are ready for. Most often I see the discrepancy with Holocaust
material.)

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks for any input.

Re: [ha-Safran] Israeli bios for elementary school

2017-12-08 Thread Amy Turim
Thank you, Diane, for adding some support to my comments. (Yes, I, too,
remember when teachers assigned biographies, and I think if we had GOOD ones we
would at least be able to enthusiastically recommend them.)

I also wondered about some kind of incentive from AJL… perhaps setting up an
AJL Grant for New Biography to support a writer(s)? Or maybe your idea of
working with a publisher is more practical.

Other thoughts?

I agree with Amy that the lack of bios about famous Israelis is very
troublesome. As for them not being checked out, once upon a time teachers used
to assign the reading of biographies as an assignment.

I do think the lack of information is something we as an organization should
think about trying to remedy.

Could we approach a Jewish publisher with the idea of creating such a series
and assure them that as librarians we would purchase them?

Alternately, would an organization like Avi Chai or a Board of Jewish Education
consider funding authors to produce such products?

Re: [ha-Safran] Israeli bios for elementary school

2017-12-06 Thread Amy Turim
This topic really strikes a nerve with me. There aren’t enough thoughtful,
challenging & engaging biographies of prominent Jews -- not just Israelis --
for late elementary and middle school readers, and our students are suffering
for this lack of information. History is one boring slog of facts without
people’s personalities and stories. I’ve culled many YA biographies from my
library – and I’m sure I’m not alone. Old and dry and dated, not a one had
been checked out since the mid-1970s.

Debbie Levy’s I DISSENT; RUTH BADER GINSBURG MAKES HER MARK is a wonderful book
for younger students; I’d really like to see fleshed-out serious biographies of
other important historical figures such as Golda Meir, Moses Montefiore,
Lillian Wald, Simon Wiesenthal. Awareness of this legacy -- so critical to
understanding the historical significance of Jews in today’s world -- is
diminishing with each generation.

(If this feels like overstatement, try asking the average religious school
student what s/he knows about the people I listed above.)

[ha-Safran] FW: What does a rabbi do, book for children?

Subject: [ha-Safran] What does a rabbi do, book for children?

Dear safranim,

I just got a request, that pointed, I think, to a subject not yet well covered
in our literature:

A woman called looking for a book about rabbis - and what they do - for her 9
year old grandson who has declared he wants to become a rabbi!

Of course, I immediately thought of the wonderful Ima on the Bimah.

And, Rabbis : the many faces of Judaism : 100 unexpected photographs of rabbis
with essays in their own words, could be suitable for this particular child.

And, yes, there are many other biographies of rabbis geared for children, like
Or Rose's biography of Heschel. . And the wonderful Rabbi Rocketpower series
by Rabbi Susan Abramson, and the Rabbi Harvey series.

But, a non-fiction book, similar to Sofer and A Torah is Written, about a rabbi
instead of a scribe? And, not just one page in a book about synagogues.

Any leads would be appreciated.

Thank you,

And, may you have a Shabbat filled with Shalom,

Ann

[ha-Safran] FW: Synagogue Librarian Wages

2017-10-27 Thread Amy Turim
I agree with Rachel on this. As a synagogue librarian I negotiated my salary
based on a wide swath of municipal librarians’ wages, because so many of the
synagogue librarians are still volunteers. In addition, religious school
teacher salaries often vary widely based on education and length of service.

It can come down to how much your particular institution truly values your
contribution, and the more support you can gather from your constituency, the
stronger your position. At the start of every year I send a short email to the
Temple Board with a list of books in our collection that may be useful and
interesting to them (INSPIRED JEWISH LEADERSHIP, MORE THAN MANAGING; The
Relentless Pursuit of Effective Jewish Leadership, et al.), our Rabbi happens
to be a great reader, and I really try to make the library a presence in the
synagogue.

librarians in your local public library and school library system.

I agree that the easiest thing to use as comparison is the salaries for
teachers--use the teachers of religious school if you don’t have a day school.
The librarian should be considered a staff educator in the same way and the
salaries per hour should be equal unless they authorize higher salaries for
specific teaching degrees, etc.

Look at the salaries of teachers in the school. The librarian should have an
equivalent salary. For example: if a full-time teacher earns $60,000 a year,
the librarian salary should be at least $30 / hour. It is better to have a
yearly salary than an hourly rate.

Fyi - I bought THE PASSOVER COWBOY for my synagogue library, and it's a very

[ha-Safran] Weine call number suggestions, please

2017-01-05 Thread Amy Turim
Just received a book I’d ordered by Todd Parr, who writes so well for young
children, addressing issues and feelings with empathy and gentle
self-empowerment. These are not overtly Jewish books, but I’m glad to
include them in my synagogue library.

The two I already have are easily catalogued under Grief and Mourning, but
I’m stuck on *THE I’M NOT SCARED BOOK*, and hope someone else has been down
this road and can help me out!

Thanks very much –

Dear Safranim,

Perhaps you've heard in the news that Simon and Schuster has offered Milo
Yiannopoulos a book deal through their conservative imprint, Threshold. He is
an anti-Semitic, misogynist, bigoted, neo-Nazi "troll" whose goal in life is to
harass people. He was the one who abused black Ghostbusters actress Leslie
Jones so badly that Twitter actually banned him.

While he has a right to free speech, that does not include book deals. In my
opinion, this book deal legitimizes his message of hate and gives him a wider
platform for it. I feel that S should be aware that some of its customers are
disgusted by their poor decision, so I emailed them. If you agree, I encourage
you to email, write, or call to tell them so.

Dear Ms. Robinson,

As a librarian for 20 years and an advocate of free speech, I must nevertheless
protest your rewarding Milo Yiannopoulos's hateful, bigoted, abusive behavior
with a book deal. The public needs to hear less from this horrible man, not
more. I am ashamed of S for helping him to spread his messages of hate. I
certainly will not be purchasing this book, and I'm sure many of my colleagues
feel the same way. I urge you to cancel this book deal. In America's current
atmosphere of divisiveness and emboldened hate speech, it is time to cultivate
an atmosphere of tolerance and kindness rather than fan the flames by
amplifying the voices of the so-called alt right.

I hope you will seriously consider the consequences to our society of giving
hate speech a legitimate platform.
Thank you for your attention,

Heidi Rabinowitz

Re: [ha-Safran] Graphic novels

2016-12-14 Thread Amy Turim
Hi Arlene -

That's pretty advanced reading for a 2nd grader. I've got a few to add to
the list, but definitely take a look at them first - I'm quite careful about
where I shelve the graphic novels in my library. Rabbi Harvey and Barry
Deutsch are fine in the YA section, but so many of them are visually or
contextually "graphic" that I keep them in an open space in the adult book
area, where I can keep an eye on who's looking...

Here are some ideas:

LILY RENEE; ESCAPE ARTIST by Trina Robbins

MENDEL'S DAUGHTER; A MEMOIR by Martin Lemelman

ANNE FRANK: THE ANNE FRANK HOUSE AUTORIZED GRAPHIC BIOGRAPHY
by Sid Jacobson

JEWS IN AMERICA: A CARTOON HISTORY by David Gantz

The first one should be fun for the student. MENDEL'S DAUGHTER is a
re-telling of a Holocaust story - including a lot of iconography -- and the
next two are good to have on hand, but probably not right for this student.

I've really loaded up on the Anne Frank books that are appropriate for
younger ages. So many girls eagerly check out the Diary and are discouraged
by the difficulty and density, and my fear is that they'll never pick it up
again. I'm very pleased to be able to steer them to alternative "Anne"
books.

Good luck, Arlene - let's hope for more graphic novels. (Rabbi Harvey is a
godsend for struggling readers!)

Re: [ha-Safran] Teaching library to high schooler age

2016-09-20 Thread Amy Turim
What a great idea, Rachel, and thanks for sharing it – with an example, no
less! I’m passing this on to our Director of Education; the whole idea of
having the students do this kind of research is much deeper than the usual
notion of “research.”

Thanks so much!

Dear Hasafranim,

Thank you to all who sent in suggestions about how to teach library to the over
13 crowd. A tough bunch, but I came up with something that worked fairly well.

Since this year the class is going in-depth into the Jewish lifecycle, I
decided to make that my jumping-off point. Under the rubrics of birth and
pregnancy, bnai mitzvah, marriage and divorce, and death and mourning, I
created a series of questions people (or they) might ask a librarian that can
or cannot be found on the internet. I had them, one by one, dream up possible
subject headings and then look for them in the online catalog and then find the
sources on the shelf. Sample questions were: "You're having a brit bat and want
a specifically female Jewish quote for the ceremony. Where do you look?" or
"Your 80 year old great grandmother never had a bat mitzvah ceremony and longs
to read torah and hates computers. What sources can you find to teach trope to
an adult?"

The kids found it dorky at first, but then got into the search and soon
understood the variety of a Jewish library and how to search in one.

Re: [ha-Safran] book on Tzeddakah

2016-09-15 Thread Amy Turim
Hello Ellen. The title is THE VERY BEST PLACE FOR A PENNY. It’s a classic,
quite dated (though I was surprised to just see that it was published in 1984;
it looks like a book from the early 1960s!) and still a big hit with younger
students aged K-5. It’s the story of a giant penny trying to find the “best
place” where he fits in. Children find it pretty hilarious because of the
illustrations, and it does get the tzedakah message across. Definitely a book
to have in a Jewish library that reaches out to children, in or out of a
religious school setting.

[ha-Safran] It Can Be Better!! RE: supportive library article

2016-07-07 Thread Amy Turim
Toby, this is such a sad assessment. Apparently my own experience as a Reform
synagogue librarian is unique. I am salaried (based on an annual contract for a
particular number of hours per year), have a book and services purchasing
allowance that is part of the Temple budget, work closely with the temple’s
Director of Education to enhance classroom experience, and the library is a
source of pride for the entire temple community.

I know how fortunate I am, but books and reading are very highly valued by our
Rabbi, and I think his lead has strongly influenced our temple culture. A
senior play-reading group meets in the library; I’m often asked to help find
appropriate readings for holiday or special services; I make sure teachers and
clergy know that the collection has books for children going through difficult
times (deaths of grandparents, for instance) and I’m happy to provide materials
at a moment’s notice.

As I write this I can see that I’ve tried to make the point that the library is
not separate and apart from the temple – it’s a living breathing part of the
community that has much to offer (as opposed to a dusty, old “room of books”).
A few years ago the Director of Education instituted “Chugim”, electives, as an
occasional adjunct to the weekend religious school. The hope was to raise the
interest level for the students and shake up the curriculum a bit. I was asked
if I wanted to lead a Library “Chug” and agreed on one condition: I would
READ. My reasoning was simple: a student who chose the Library Chug was
choosing reading -- not arts and crafts in the library – and so it would be
about books. All these years later, the library’s is the most popular Chug, and
the one most imbued with Jewish values, and mostly… Chelm stories. I started
with them to get the students’ attention and interest, and year after year it’s
what they love, and frankly, WHERE ELSE are they learning about shtetl life in
a way that’s engaging and will stick with them? (and by the way… I discourage
the use of “stupid” to describe the Chelmites; I tell my students that they are
“curious” and just don’t have a lot of information). I encourage students to
tell their parents the stories (most young parents have never heard of Chelm or
the stories; this is part of our Judaic legacy!) and then I hear from the
parents that their children want these books. I’ve been able to introduce
non-readers to the Rabbi Harvey books and then I hear from the parents that
their children are sending emails to Steve Sheinkin!

We also have a Birthday Book Club for the younger (K-3) grades. A month before
each child’s birthday a letter is sent to the family, offering them the
opportunity to make a small contribution ($18) to enroll their child in the
club. The child and parent come to my office and choose one of the
recently-purchased books I have that are catalogued and ready to be shelved.
The chosen book is book-plated and personalized (“from mom and dad {or
grandma/uncle/etc.] in honor of Shlomo Cohen’s 6th birthday”) and becomes a
permanent part of the library collection. This is a big thrill to these new
readers – much less so once they reach 4th grade – and it has served as a
wonderful bond to the library… and the temple.

This is not about blowing my horn – I have my temple board, my Rabbi and the
congregation to thank for putting their money where their values are. If you
want your children to read, Show Them The Books.

I am happy to share more – contact me via the email below – and I hope to see
some discussion in response to Toby’s and my posts.

I still carry MOMENT, THE FORWARD, JEWISH REVIEW OF BOOKS, REFORM JUDAISM,
the local Jewish weekly, our synagogue newsletter and a few other magazines
-- not all titles come to mind right now. They are definitely a "lure" into
the library - I have them on a stand-up rack just inside the entrance,
visible through the front window - and I don't foresee a time when we won't
want these hard copies. On Sunday mornings during religious school I have a
few scattered on tables where parents sit and have coffee and a bagel, and I
know they are read. Links to the online versions are available, but I know

Does anyone carry Jewish magazines and newspapers in their libraries at this

We're a small congregational library that hasn't carried them for several

Re: [ha-Safran] Subject: Elazar cataloging question for history of jews in comics

2015-02-04 Thread Amy Turim
Hello Rachel -

There are certainly many ways to go with this, but at this stage I am
shelving all Graphic Literature together as a collection. Each item has a
vivid red label on the spine - GRAPHIC NOVEL - as well as a subject-specific
catalog number, as if they're part of the regular collection. This seems to
be the best way to

1) Allow patrons to easily find them in one place,

2) Encourage people to recognize the variety of graphic materials we
have (i.e., these are NOT comic books!), and

3) Keep them safe from small prying hands. Many (most) of these are
really not appropriate for children, so the shelf is highly visible, but in
the adult section of our small library. From my desk I can see who is
looking at the collection. (The exceptions to this rule are the Rabbi
Harvey books. They're outrageously popular, and clearly for children.)

At this point the Graphic Literature collection is small enough that the
slightly hodge-podge nature of this shelving method can work. There may
come a time when I decide to fully integrate them, and they'll be easy to
shelve because they have regular catalog numbers.

I'd be interested to see what other librarians are doing.

[ha-Safran] query re: FRAGMENTS

2014-07-03 Thread Amy Turim
I am very interested to know how librarians have handled the dilemma
regarding the book FRAGMENTS, MEMORIES OF A WARTIME CHILDHOOD, by Binjamin
Wilkomerski. I didn't know this book was in our collection but it was
apparently a long-lost book that was just returned and so I am confronted
with it.

Those of you who know the title certainly recall the controversy surrounding
it - Truth? False? A Hoax? An Abomination? -- but what to do with the actual
book. My strong personal inclination is to remove it from my collection
altogether, but if not, what to call it? Fiction? That feels offensive to
me; it was written as a child's memoir.

How have other synagogue and school librarians dealt with this title?

Many thanks,

[ha-Safran] collectible children's books

Colleagues – A bit of a dilemma: occasionally a book donation to my

Suggestions?

[ha-Safran] I'm confused about PJ Library

2012-09-05 Thread Amy Turim Larry Hershman
This may be very old news to many of you, but I'd like to understand the
role my synagogue library could play in supporting PJ Library. According to
what I see on the website, their funding comes from the Harold Grinspoon
Foundation and other monies donated by libraries. The money from the HGF
and the Implementing Partners goes to purchase books that are then free
for participating member families. Is this correct? Are any AJL libraries
involved? As great as this idea is, I don't have a budget for this purpose,
though perhaps our congregation would support a fundraiser. I have a
feeling that I'm missing a crucial piece, and I'd appreciate any
clarification.

Thanks -

Amy Turim

[ha-Safran] FW: Re: What to do with old magazines?

Hi Rita -

You are not alone with your magazine problem! I keep magazines for about 6
months (never less, sometimes longer), and make it clear to the congregants
- a sign on the magazine rack, a mention in my column in the Temple
newsletter - that old issues are available to whoever wants them. Sometimes
people are interested, sometimes not. I offer them to the religious school
teachers, and I also offer them to our Temple pre-school, which takes some
for the pictures for children to use in projects. Beyond that, you could
call local Jewish nursing homes or group homes or similar facilities and see
if they're interested. And finally: RECYCLE.

Good luck.

[ha-Safran] ISO HESTER STREET

2012-01-20 Thread Amy Turim Larry Hershman
Greetings and Shabbat Shalom -

Imagine my surprise to learn that HESTER STREET is $99.95 on Amazon.com! I
would love a DVD copy of this film, and am reaching out to anyone who may
have an extra copy or a good suggestion. Such a great slice-of-life for
religious school students - there must be a way to get this (legally!) for
under a hundred dollars.

Many thanks -
