Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-17 Thread Alec Sanger

Don't know what it is, but it seems like a couple updates ago made it so only 3
people max can join my servers. I just checked my graphs and it's a solid line
at 3 players all the way across. Any idea as to what could be causing this?

I've seen 4 on across all our servers throughout the weekend thru all the

aka 'retrying conection' which has been reported by many. It only seems to crop
its head in the begining portion of the map, 2nd mission near the dead bolted

that area we're good to go.

[hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-17 Thread Jason Ruymen
A required update for the Left 4 Dead Demo is now available. Please run
hldsupdatetool to receive the files. The specific changes include:

- Fixed problem where the group browser was showing servers for groups you were
not a member of
- Fixed problem with split packet/reassembly on level transition. This would
cause the game to feel laggy for some period after a level transition
- Fixed a crash when connecting to a dedicated server

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-17 Thread Arg!
Having sv_password functioning as it usually does is in other games would be
most appreciated, gives us a way to have an adhoc way of completely blocking
server access to anyone who does not have the password.

Eg, on my TF2 server (if the Steam Community filtering here were to be
applied to that game) I have a community group who would have access, but
theres more people than there are slots, and every friday night i run a PUG,
so i always password the server, kick everyone, then release the password
(sometimes via IRC, rather than a group announcement) and its first in,
best dressed.

Especially given the 4 slot (or 8 in full game) limit in l4d, there may be
times when i want to get on with 3-7 mates and just play, or set it up so
4-8 mates can just play, without having to worry about un-invited people
from joining just because they happen to be in the community group, then
having to explain to them why they've been kicked.

I still think the community stuff, (if its working as advertised, i
personally have not even tried setting it up) is still great, but having
sv_password as a final line of lockout would make it easy. At least until
such time as we have sourcemod for l4d (looks at bl4nk)

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-16 Thread AnAkIn .
Some people left my server, and the group menu kept saying my servers were
full, it seems that it doesn't update the player numbers if some players
leave.

2008/11/16 David Kellaway [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Aside from it not being particularly hard to guess the number of a random
group (as I posted earlier, it's probably just the primary key for that
group in Valve's database, since they seem to be sequential by group age), I
don't think there's deliberate misassigning of servers - there seems to be a
bug on the client end where a server from group 1234 will show up to anyone
in group 123, and so on. I'd guess this is because it's not looking for the
exact number, it's just seeing if that number is a substring of the server's
tags (which it is, because grp:123 is a subset of grp:1234).

What this ultimately means is until this is fixed, the earlier your
group(s) were created, the more bogus results you're going to see. I'm in
multiple groups with two-digit IDs, so the menu is getting a bit
unmanageable - it'd be nice if this was fixed as fast as the menu itself was
 added...

Correction,

I see my servers after 30 seconds/1 minute in the main menu. This is the
same problem already posted by other people on the mailinglist. So problem
is already known.

Maybe a stupid question,

Yesterday i have added sv_steamgroup groupid to my server.cfg. rebooted
the server and when I connected to my l4d demo I saw, in the main menu, my
servers. But now I can't find them anymore ingame. Even when I search for
them. I'm sure the sv_steamgroup is set and has the correct groupid. Really
strange..

sv_steamgroup 23456

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-16 Thread Jason
 - Fixed a bug where the connection to a server would get stuck in a
 looping state

This might have been my bug or sv_unreserve, however with sv_unreserve
removed and this supposedly fixed I guess it doesn't really matter.

 - Made sv_steamgroup_exclusive not connect to matchmaking. Removed
sv_unreserve, private servers should sv_steamgroup_exclusive now

Hmm fair enough sv_unreserve was removed, can people still join mid-game?

As for sv_steamgroup_exclusive Is it going to have multiple values? I was
thinking I might start with having 1 community member join then get
populated by matchmaking and later on maybe making it full exclusive?

So sv_steamgroup_exclusive

0 - Disabled
1 - Exclusive for first group member?
2 - Full exclusive only group members?

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-16 Thread Kitteny Berk
If it was intended, I'd expect no lobby, or a functional one, not a
barely a lobby that doesn't serve any purpose, remember, this applies
on joining one of my group's servers, not just on a standard manual DC,
so it's the same as every client in every community will see when they
join a community server. doesn't really strike me as ideal.

I'd like to see a lobby when you connect from the group server list, so
people can set a game up before it starts, rather than having to run a
few votes, just to get the game they intended to play.

Also, it seems servers with sv_password set don't show in the group
server list, so there's no functional way to protect them and have
servers that are *only* joinable by my community, while not having to
teach people how to open the console and direct connect manually.

I'm personally really liking the direction valve are taking with this,
but it needs refining a bit to be functional enough to replace a server
browser.

A required update for the Left 4 Dead Demo has been released.

Right before this update, my 16 public servers were full. I did a
shutdown, updated the servers, and waited for the existing games to
finish. After they did, I started my server up in the exact same
manner I had earlier, but now my servers lie empty. My command line
is:

./srcds_run -netconport 281## -netconpassword foo +hostport 271## +map
l4d_dem_hospital01_apartment -steamport 261## +clientport 251##
+matchmakingport 241## +systemlinkport 231## +tv_port 221## -fork 16

Specifying the IP doesn't help. My server.cfg only sets hostname and
rcon_password. I tried connecting to one of my servers through the
console and it worked fine. As soon as I connected, other people
started connecting, so I quit. I watched the console and the game
filled and later emptied; then stayed empty. I do NOT set
sv_steamgroup and sv_steamgroup_exclusive and checked they're both at
the default of empty and 0, respectively.

I took a look at the server browser and found 60-70ish servers in the
Internet tab. Every single one of them was non-empty. But there were
several hundred in the custom tab, almost all of them empty.
Including my own servers. I would guess that sv_steamgroup_exclusive
is stopping non-empty servers from being joined even when set to 0.

Alright, there's a problem going on since two updates ago. Every time I
reach the subway level, until I get to the lower subway (just past the
escalators), my net_graph looks like the following... and other players are
 experiencing this too.

 http://www.1337gaming.com/l4dpics/

This situation loops over and over...it seems to be a client problem, some
clients get it all the time, some get it occasionally, and some get it not
at all. Very strange. I've reinstalled my server from scratch, verified my
client files, and all sorts of other changes, with no result. Has anyone
else seen this or is it just me?

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-15 Thread Brian D'Arcy
Still getting this issue also. It doesn't happen to me every time, but in a
group of four players, it inevitably nails someone and we all hafta wait 5+
minutes for it to either calm down, or restart the client.

Sometimes restarting the client doesn't even fix it.

reach the subway level, until I get to the lower subway (just past the

Any news Jason/Valve?

Are we SOL till monday? Working weekends?

The update rendered the multiplayer demo useless, though local single player is

Yes, I think the Steam Group thing is refreshing all the time and it seems
to cause problems with the server browser and maybe with the matchmaking.
I also found that it was really hard to get the server list in the server
browser, it was really slow since the last update, but after a few retries
it worked (but it was still slow to get all the list).

Rate can be changed.

cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate are just limited to 30 because server's FPS is
30, so it's useless to put them higher.

and there's no sv_maxupdaterate/sv_minupdaterate (would be useless anyway I
think, since the max updaterate is 30 and the min is 10)

This was not an issue 2.. 3 updates ago, something in the last week of
updates has caused it. I'm sure valve will get it fixed before launch
(hopefully).

   - Added the ability to tie game servers to Steam Community groups.
  Group

which can be used as the value for sv_steamgroup. Users that are in

   - Fixed setinfo exploit
   - Fixed a crash when exiting the game
   - Fixed a few cases where the game would crash when using ALT-TAB
   - Fixed a problem that could cause texture corruption on some ATI
  video

   - Fixed a bug that could cause infected horde to disappear

And we've added more documentation for dedicated servers in the file

Hey Valve,

So you release an update at 9pm on Friday night which pretty much renders
dedicated servers unjoinable and unplayable and now we're not hearing
anything back from you

I hope that we see better effort when we're playing the full game we paid
for. I can sort of forgive because this is a free demo and it's not fully
supported, but this is pretty ridiculous. I would suggest play testing your
changes before releasing them to the public, that might be better served in
the future.

yes this is still happening on servers. We have it on all 12 of our

I'm hoping that we will see a fix for this.

It would be nice to hear someone from the L4D group to at least
acknowledge this issue just so that we all don't think nothing is being

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-15 Thread Cc2iscooL
I figured out the issue with the disconnect/reconnect bug. It definitely has
something to do with the rates on the clientside.

Scenario to test: Set your client rates to the following.

cl_cmdrate 100
cl_updaterate 100
rate 5

Beat the first level.

Now, on the second level, you should have latency issues.

Now, set your settings to the following.

cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 30
rate 2

The latency issue will disappear until the next time you reach that level,
and then you will have to set all of your rates to the top again, and then
back to the bottom to fix it once more.

Eureka! I've found it! :D

In my complete disgust for last night's update (and having to restart my
servers every 2 hours), I completely missed the fact that they released this
update.

I still maintain that they need to be more thorough in their play testing
with changes like this. This isn't the first time or the first game where
an update has broken something and it could have been easily avoided by
doing a bit of planning.

I am confused by your email.
The update they released today at 6(PST = Valves Time Zone) fixed
everything.. not break it. What problems are you having?!?!

-Welder

I would suggest play testing
 your
changes before releasing them to the public, that might be better served
 in
 the future.

Yes, I just got the idea to have a batch do it 1 by 1.. Automatically. IDK
why I didn't think of that earlier since it won't move on to the next
batch line until the update is complete, and running all batches at once
causes issues. So it should be simple :)

 Thanks for the advice!

 Batch file/shell script ftw? =)

I have one complaint about this system. People are listing there servers
under my steam community. I think it would be nice if I could set a
password or key on my steam group admin page and change the cvar

Maybe sv_steamgroup groupid key

I have no idea why it didn't have my text...

The error I posted was where the server sometimes goes into an infinite Host

We had this problem on the last update and this one has not fixed it. Running

You don't have sv_unreserve in your server.cfg do you? If you do, remove
that.
Maybe you should post your server.cfg as well(Remove rcon password so we

Re: [hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-15 Thread hlds
I would suggest removing that... People can join mid game anyway(Not from
a lobby, but manually). When you do that, its pretty much telling the
server that the Lobby that reserved it no longer wants it.. And it
executes server config at game restart, so everytime its doing a new game,
its ridding itself from the lobby reservation, which may be causing it to
loop. Because it may be dropping those players, then new players join the
server, and get dropped too, and it repeats. so I THINK that is the issue.
I could be wrong... but I suggest you remove that and try it again.

[hlds] Left 4 Dead Demo Update Available

2008-11-14 Thread Jason Ruymen
A required update for the Left 4 Dead Demo has been released. Please run
hldspdatetool to receive the update. The specific changes include:

- Added the ability to tie game servers to Steam Community groups. Group
administrators can now see the GroupID on the group's administrative page,
which can be used as the value for sv_steamgroup. Users that are in that group
will then be able to browse directly to them from the main menu
- Fixed setinfo exploit
- Fixed a crash when exiting the game
- Fixed a few cases where the game would crash when using ALT-TAB
- Fixed a problem that could cause texture corruption on some ATI video cards
- Fixed a bug that could cause infected horde to disappear

And we've added more documentation for dedicated servers in the file
dedicatedserver_readme.txt

Alright, there's a problem going on since two updates ago. Every time I
reach the subway level, until I get to the lower subway (just past the
escalators), my net_graph looks like the following... and other players are
experiencing this too.

http://www.1337gaming.com/l4dpics/

This situation loops over and over...it seems to be a client problem, some
clients get it all the time, some get it occasionally, and some get it not
at all. Very strange. I've reinstalled my server from scratch, verified my
client files, and all sorts of other changes, with no result. Has anyone
else seen this or is it just me?

From the last update i get many disconnects during the game. I can

 connect

to my server, but when I begin to play I get a message that the server is
timed out (in the right upper screen I get a message that it will
autoconnect again.. in red). The reconnection is only 1 or 2 sec's. But I
get it more than once during the game.
