It has been certainly a much poorer evening here
Barry, but the Iranian jammer is still making an
appearance, and quite a few TA carriers, though haven't managed any audio yet.

Yes he did, Nick (on an SRF-39FP during supreme conditions, at Grayland in
November of 2008). Puyallup is definitely in a much lower propagation league!
As for the 1575-Iranian Jammer, I heard it at S9 in Hawaii, so I'm temporarily
satisfied. A lot of the Victoria TA's from the Middle East seem to lose their
steam once they go through U.S. border security.

It's not just limited to TAs.  A few years
ago you and Walt heard a DX test on 960 from
Ontario, which was a total no-show here, so it
would appear that Victoria has an advantage in
that direction. On the surface, the salt water
path seems to be an advantage for you.

Bruce in Seattle

That's really interesting, Gary.   I will
not make any jokes about the US border
protection agency, and move directly into the realm of real speculation.

Victoria city looks out over about 20-60km of
salt water along the bearings for Europe and
the Middle East.  I would have thought that
the fact that I'm 5 km or so from the water on
those bearings would negate that advantage,
but perhaps there is more to learn. I think I
feel an experiment coming on:Â we have a park
with about a 40m high cliff (a little one, I
know) facing out in a TA direction...

Great job with the new catches from the Middle
East, Nick! Unfortunately most of what is
being reported in Victoria seems to be held up
at the border crossing. Some threshold audio
on 864 showed up here about an hour ago, but
other than that it's just been carriers at this challenged location.

For what it's worth, I have read Nigel's impressive reports from southern
Alberta in amazement. The regularity of TPs and TAs he receives amazes me as
his location is quite far inland, as is mine. The consistency with which he
receives DUs is also noteworthy. Although living adjacent to the Rocky
Mountains possibly inhibits TP reception by blocking some of the low angle

Great job with the new catches from the Middle East, Nick! Unfortunately most
of what is being reported in Victoria seems to be held up at the border
crossing. Some threshold audio on 864 showed up here about an hour ago, but
other than that it's just been carriers at this challenged location.

It's really erratic, unfortunately. Things can
be quite strong one moment, and gone the next.

Buthave repeated Romania 855//1179 and Egypt
864//1503 from last night, but bringing up
webstreams in time seems almost out of the
question. 1026 was up with a Koranic sounding
chant, and the best I could say is that the
Tabriz stream sounded pretty much the same a minute or two later.

The norm around here seems to be a peak around sunset, then things drop
off a bit, sometimes rebounding later, but often not.
Signals have certainly dropped off tonight, only carriers here
now.    Interestingly quite a strong presumed Farda carrier on 1575, but
I can't even see the buzz saw on the Perseus display.   I had to confirm
on a European SDR that it was still on.

I'm hearing weak audio on 1026 as well at 02:54 UTC. Seems like I get the
ME better than I receive Europe. Not sure why. More water somehow? Poor
level. Better than last night overall, but not as good as a couple nights
ago! Walt.

Poor at best, but nice sequence of orchestral music, then woman talking.

Only third time that Iran has been heard here at home. Only others were

Thank you for your reply. Just checked now at 1935 that 702 kHz has Russian.

EMWG has English listed at this time, not Russian, and only one
station at Rasht with 800 kW. WRTH shows Russian at this time, from
Kiahshar with 500 kW. Also listed is a 50 kw station in Bushehr.

I no longer remember what cuaased me to say the WRTH conflicts with
itself. The frequency listing and the national entry are in accord.
Maybe I mixed up a different frequency.

Thanks for looking carefully at my report. After I wrote this I have
found nearly 20 additional Iranaian stations at the half hour with the
distincive IS.

I believe Iran also uses 702 for Russian at 1930, and 702 does
very well, as I heard it here many evenings last season, and even a

Rasht with 800 kW. WRTH shows Russian at this time, from Kiahshar with 500
kW. Also listed is a 50 kw station in Bushehr.

I no longer remember what cuaased me to say the WRTH conflicts with itself.
The frequency listing and the national entry are in accord. Maybe I mixed
up a different frequency.

Thanks for looking carefully at my report. After I wrote this I have found
nearly 20 additional Iranaian stations at the half hour with the distincive
IS.

2010-12-06 Thread Jim Renfrew
Hi Chuck - you nailed it. Iran it is. The chimes fit the VIRI IS on
Interval Signals on Line, not quite the same tone, but definitely the same
notes. On 702 I only hear two tones, but it's a dead-on match with the same
tones on 711 where there are three tones. The third tone seems to have
dropped out on 702. I suspect that I will hear these chimes many times as I
work my way up the dial on this recording. The Iranian TOH at xx:30 is one
major reason why we record at the bottom of the hour. Maybe hearing what I
want to hear but maybe that ID is "Govorit Iran" or "Tehran". Thanks! Jim

Hi Jim -

I can't say I have ever heard "Govorit" IDs from Mayak. I'd be tempted to
think this was Iran ending their broadcast in Georgian, assuming that
"Govorit" is used in Georgian just like Russian.

Ahwaz-711 carries VOIRI at times per the WRTH just like 702 so maybe the
chimes are Iranian although I hear 3 note chimes rather than 2 note.

Hmm... the audio was noted around 0300, so maybe not Turkey after all. Right
now (0410) I have four healthy carriers, neatly spaced out between 701.9980

Managed to go over the coax lying on the driveway with the snow blower.
Managed to shred the coax on both sides of the connector. Argh. So no TAs
tonight.

Barry, as far as I know Turkey has a very limited MW schedule these days,
listed in the EMWG as on 702 0400-0800. Turkey was invisible while in
Newfoundland in November.

A better than usual evening for TAs here... many of the usual suspects have
good signals (e.g., Algeria on 531/549, UK on 693/882/909/1089/1215,
France
on 603/864/711/1377, Holland on 675/747, Spain 684/774, etc.), but also
some
less common stuff. Just noted some audio from Benin-1566, and previously
had

the Saudi on 594, and several intriguing unids on 702 (tentative Turkey,
appeared to be // TRT-1 stream), 765 (suspect Iran), 783 (likely Syria),
936

(again suspect Iran), and others.

Anybody else hearing interesting stuff?

I am sure it was even better earlier in the evening. Helps to begin
reviewing the band before the midwest 50 kW signals start dominating. This
was a remarkable bandscan. On the Perseus nearly every channel showed audio
or a het at 10 PM local. I had set the perseus for a timed recording at
2055z, but it failed to record. Oh well, I guess I'll have to review more
of my terrabyte's worth of Newfoundland recordings! Jim Renfrew

A frustrating evening for TAs, though much better than has been heard recently.
There was no audio much past the mumble level, there was a reasonable number
of those at one time or another:

783 is the only channel that I don't have a good suspicion as to what it

Re: [IRCA] TAs from the WCNA

2010-01-27 Thread Mike Stonebridge

Barry:

TA's are in Northern Alberta most afternoons starting an hour or so before
local sunset and then fading down into the noise around sunset. Most of the
time very few have any audio, tho the carriers show quite clearly on the
Perseus waterfall display. Today was very much different with the first TA
(1422-Germany) showing up at 13:20 MST (20:20UTC) At that time of day the
sun here is only 30 minutes or so past it's zenith so it was real early for
a TA. In all I had around 30 or so with audio plus about the same number of
carriers before they faded down around sunset. Most were European in origin
with only a couple from the middle east. Some hadn't been heard here in
years, like 945 & 711 from France and others were regulars like 1134-Croatia
and UK-1215. Two frequencies, 855 and 1152, each had 2 stations fighting for
dominance. The beauty of owning a Perseus is the ability to record the whole
band while listening to one particular frequency. The downside is the huge
files it produces and the time it takes to run thru them all. I still wading
thru them.

It's interesting to note that TA signals were actually better than average
here last night, albeit spotty and with very deep fading. Between 0400 and
0500 UTC, I had audio from about a dozen countries, including Faroes,
Algeria, Morocco, Spain, France, UK, Germany, Denmark, Holland, Croatia,
Finland, Sweden, and even a bit of audio from 1566 Benin. Presumed 828
Bulgaria and 1143 Russia flirted with reaching audio levels, but didn't quite
make it. It's strange that we don't see more reports of TA reception from
folks in ENA these days.

Re: [IRCA] TAs Last Night - Country List

2010-01-21 Thread Martin Foltz
Jim, the IRCA has a country list. It was published in last year's DXM and I
think it's published every year. I'm sure it's on the website. I just don't
hear much foreign DX so I'm not a big country counter.

You're talking to the guy who volunteered too long ago with the NRC to
create a revised country list and hasn't done it yet after at least 5 years!

It's actually fairly complicated, with various traditions of
country-counting: (1) Hams seem to count anything that has a spot of water

in between as two countries, (2) NASWA has the approach of "once a country,
always a country" - so there are three post-war countries in Germany instead

of one post-Wall country today - this acknowledges that people don't like
giving up countries even though they no longer exist. (3) NRC has an old
modified list, with some water separation, e.g. France and Corsica are two
countries, Hawaii and Alaska are separate countries, but not nearly as many
as the ham lists I've seen. The thing that had me stumped was the Dutch
islands in the Caribbean, which have various degrees of autonomy from the
Netherlands and with each other with rolling dates for activating the
changes. On top of that DXers are as independent-minded about counting
countries as we are about counting domestic stations, e.g. call changes,
facility changes, COL changes, etc., so as many as would use an official
list an equal number would go their own way!

Having said all that, I'm still willing to work on something like this.
Maybe some others are interested, too.

I'm a bit surprised to see no mentions of TA reception last night... I
guess

I had my own private opening. I suspect it was geographically fairly
selective, and didn't extend out west. I almost missed it myself - just
did
a quick check of the band before hitting the sack a little before
midnight,

and found nothing special across most of the band, but some BIG TA hets at
the high end. The French stations on 1377 and 1557 were absolutely huge,
blowing past the domestic QRM.

Checking the less common channels, I found a man and woman in teletalk on
1476... I wasn't sure of the language, but I brought up the R. Euskadi
Irratia (Spain) stream on the net, and sure enough, it was them. Down to
1386, where I found a big carrier, but couldn't quite coax enough audio
out

to be sure it was the Euskadi outlet there. On to 1494, where I found FF
talk that was // to the France Bleu/R. Corsa streaming. SS on several
other

top end channels, such as 1602... big het on 1611, but Vatican there is
unneeded, so I didn't spend time on it... orchestral music on 1539 (an
extremely tough channel here due to huge 1540 domestics), presumably
Germany.
I then found a man and woman talking on 1575, and paralleled it with the
RAI

Radio 1 stream.

At that point (0600 UTC), I had to call it quits and get some sleep, but
it
was fun while it lasted! 1476 Spain and 1494 France were new loggings
here.

I've seen this before, where the rebound from a solar disturbance can
produced enhanced propagation of some sort, especially on the more
southerly
TA paths. Whatever the mechanism, it's a welcome change, especially
during

the January blahs...

It must have been a private opening! Do let us know where to make
reservations

I was checking between 0300 and 0500 UTC, and I wasn't even getting a weak
het, anywhere! Usually I can at least get a het on 963, 1134, 1215 and
the like. Domestic reception was quite good, so I knew my antennae were

As is common, things never really developed in the TAs. Various of the regular
channels perked up briefly now and again, and even some not so regular such as
1539 and 999, usually not long enough to hunt for webstreams.

Now, at 0700, some reasonably readable audio on 567, 594, 747 and 774 from
Japan, though fading up and down of course. 279 is reasonable also, with a
very weak 153 as well, but no 234.

Great list, and helpful too, Nigel. Thanks. I'm also getting audio on

Hi Dennis,
Normally, yes, 675 would be Holland, but I've been listening there
for the last half hour, and have been getting a mix of 3 stations, with
Holland, Libya, and Norway (just confirmed via the web stream) all
coming in. First time I've heard Norway on MW since the days of 1314.

Hi Dennis,

I'm happy you received some audio on 675 kHz tonight. Back during one of
the best October TA openings I did receive some brief audio (religious music)
on 675 KHz from Radio Maria in Holland, but it certainly wasn't one of the
stronger TA's. From what I understand, Radio Maria is the dominant TA
