I am not familiar with their current prices, but you can purchase their products from 1 year to a lifetime subscription, and I believe the pricing is comparable if not better than other top named antivirus software companies. I also use Malware Bytes as an additional way to find and delete malware, and there is a free version of this available. Again, however, right now Malware Bytes is working to make their latest version of their product fully JAWS compatible, as they changed to a new programming platform on their latest version, and nust work the bugs out of it. I can however provide you with a copy of he installation file for the last JAWS compatible version, V. 1.75, if you might think that you would be interested in having it. Hi Mike Thanks for your response. I downloaded the OE installer from the internet, but don't remember the specific site. But when I can install it again, I believe I'm going to use the OE installer from the JAWS-Users programs page. The computer I'm working is using the free edition of AVG anti-virus. But thanks for the tip about Nod32. I don't recall if I used the run as administrator option from the context menu, or just logged on as an administrator. When you say that Revo can uninstall OE, I'm assuming that you're referring to the free version. I have read that you dumped the pro version, and after looking at it I can understand why. To uninstall using Revo, do I just enter the path and name of the .exe file for OE in the edit field and choose uninstall? Thanks again. ?P.S. Re: [JAWS-Users] uninstalling Outlook Express 6 (OE6)on Windows7 64bit
Mike, This latest update pertains mainly to Windows8 so, I don't think installing it would help you your friend. What do you mean by restoring his emails address book? Are you trying to import the address book as a .WAB file? Are you trying to move his email from another computer to this 1 you're working with? Below are steps showing how to move / transfer DBX files from 1 computer to another, written by Moderator Richard Q. Justice: I tested this by copying folders from Outlook Express on Windows XP, and pasting them into Outlook Express on Windows 7 64-bit. Whether your system is set to show or hide hidden folders should have no affect, since you are accessing each location with a direct file path. How to copy and transfer your messages in Outlook Express from one computer to another: 1. If you are using Identities in Outlook Express, open the Identity you want to transfer messages from. 2. Go to Tools, then Options, and then the Maintenance tab. 3. Here, tab to the store folder button, and spacebar that. 4. Now, tab twice and you should come to the file path where the folders are stored, this path is already highlighted, so just copy it to the clipboard, cancel your way out of the dialogue, and close Outlook Express. 5. Press the Windows key + the letter R to open the Run dialogue, paste the file path from the clipboard, and press enter. Doing this will place you in the proper Identity folder where your messages are stored. 6. Next, copy the folders here that contain your messages, and put them in a location that can be accessed by the other computer. This could be a USB flash drive, or some network location for instance. Note: If you have more than one identity in Outlook Express, you will need to repeat the steps above for each identity. 7. Open the same identity in Outlook Express on the computer you are transferring the messages to, and create folders with the same names as the ones you copied from the first machine, then follow steps 2 thru 5 as shown above. Note: When creating the new folders, they must have the exact same name as the folders on the first computer. 8. Now navigate to the location where you saved the original folders, and copy them to the clipboard, then return to the Identity folder you just opened in the step above, and paste the folders there. Note: If the folders have been named properly, you should get a dialogue telling you that the location already contains folders with the same name,, so just tab to the copy and replace button, and spacebar that. 9. Finally, open Outlook Express and the proper identity and check to see if your messages are in the folders you created. Take care. Hi Sandy, Try CTRL+Shift+H when in Internet Explorer to see if it brings up your Internet browsing history. If so then the same keystroke dismisses it. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] message from web page
Yes. In those cases you can try using another browser or opening a browser in safe mode, but it is possible those actions might also fail. Having one of these security programs installed on and ran from a flash drive can be helpful. If it is necessary to run an application from a command prompt outside of Windows then sighted assistance is required. Making sure that anti-spyware and antivirus applications are up-to-date and doing full system scans are important steps to take. Hopefully, if the malware is activated the antivirus program will detect it and offer to quarantine or delete it. There are removal tools that can be downloaded and used as well. These can be put on flash drives and used on infected computers. ClamWin Portable, Sophos Anti Rootkit Portable, Microsoft Safety Scanner, AVG has one, and there are others. Quite often these tools run outside of Windows to do the removal. Vipre has one that I think needs to be run in safe mode. I am quite sure that by killing the process and then emptying the Internet cache that Holger will take care of the pop up window he got. Otherwise, making sure his antivirus and anti-spyware programs have up-to-date definitions and running full system scans will hopefully detect and remove the malware. Take care. Hello Greg, The easiest way to get to the history tab is to use CTRL+H. In the dialog box there is a combo box that will let you view by site (alphabetic list), view by date, view by most visited, view by order visited today and a search box where you can search your history. If you choose the search option you will get an edit box for typing in your search term and after using the search button you will find your results in the history tree view. Re: [JAWS-Users] message from web page
Hello Holger, CCleaner will by default empty the Internet Explorer cache so unless you changed it then you cleared the cache by running that program. The pop up window might happen again if you visit a site where the malicious code resides. You might want to run Internet Explorer in safe mode the first time you start it and check to see if your home page is still the same and that your pop up blocker is turned on. To do so, go to the Run dialog by using Windows key with R. Type in iexplore.exe -extoff and press enter key. This will launch Internet Explorer in safe mode without any extensions being active. Use Alt+T and arrow down to the popup blocker menu item, right arrow into the submenu and down arrow to make sure it is turned on. Also in the Tools menu find the Smart Screen Filtering menu item and in the submenu make sure it is on. Again in the tools menu use up arrow and open Internet options. Check to make sure your home page is still the same. When you open Internet options just read the current line to find out what page opens with Internet Explorer. When you close Internet Explorer and open it again the application will start with your extensions activated and will no longer be in safe mode. I have experienced this type of window being displayed when using Internet Explorer, and by stopping the running process for IExplore.exe and emptying the IE cache the problem has been resolved. I hope it works for you. Take care. Shoshana, An OCR (Optical Character Recognition) package, would be something like FineReader (that both Open Book and Kurzweil 1000 (specialized blindness products) use. Open Book is developed by Freedom Scientific. It works with JAWS, but is by itself voicing, so you don't need JAWS to run it. For that reason, among others, it is expensive. (Same is true for Kurzweil 1000, developed by Cambium Learning Systems.) Two good 'off-the-shelf' packages are: FineReader, and OmniPage. You can get either one at around $200 or less, if there's a sale. F.R. and O.P. are workable with JAWS, but the interface isn't always so optimal. There are other OCR packages but these are the main ones in use. To scan paper, you do of course need a physical scanner, be it with a printter or as a standalone unit. The standalone scanners are usually the best. Not all scanners are created equal, and not all of them will work with the blindness packages. Re: [JAWS-Users] trying to read PDF files from a Yahoo groups filesection
I've been a long-time Omnipage user but found version 19, AKA Ultimate, an ultimate fail particularly with Word and Excel. While Abbyy Fine Reader isn't as posh, it's a lot easier to use and gives better responses in some areas and it integrates into Word / Excel much better than ver 19 of Omnipage. As an example I get better results scanning tables with FineReader than omnipage. Take care. I certainly won't tell anyone else how to format their manuscript but I've been indenting paragraphs from the days when we wrote out papers for assignments. Thankfully I can still write with paragraphs being indented. An agent once loved my manuscript and then like an idiot I told her I was legally blind. Then she started demanding that I get a sighted person to read back my manuscript and edit it that way. Needless to say I dropped her and saved her the grief of further reading the work of a blind woman. As far as I know my manuscripts read like those of a sighted person. I had an article published last week in a popular blog and the editor has no idea I'm blind. His blog has published me several times. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Flor Lynch Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2015 4:56 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Making blank lines appear betweenparagraphs in Word 2010? How do you know they are not image files? Sighted people ofen don't know the difference between images of text and text itself. Re: [JAWS-Users] uninstalling Outlook Express 6 (OE6) on Windows7 64bit
Hi Mike, At some point, a new version of the modified Outlook Express for Windows Vista and later was released, oe6_1.6.7. I'm not quite sure when, but you can view the list of changes on this thread. http://runasxp.com/Thread-Outlook-Express-6-for-windows-7-8-and-10-DOWNLOAD You can download it here: https://www.sendspace.com/file/3rih6v Yes, I am referring to the free version of Revo. What I did when I removed OE in Win7 with Revo was: 1. Open Revo, use 1st letter navigation to the Outlook Express folder. 2. Open the context menu press enter on the, Uninstall option select the yes option in the dialogue that comes up. 3. Now it's time to choose the level at which revo uninstaller does its job. So, Shift + tab, into the options list. you have 4 modes Built-in, Safe, Moderate, Advanced. I always choose advanced because some programs love to leave registry entries and little traces of themselves everywhere. These are radio buttons, so just choose the appropriate one. 4. Hit the next button and Revo will go to work and uninstall your program, so sit back for a minute or two. 5. This is when the fun really starts. After you hit the next button, Revo will display a number of left over files and registry entries from the program.hit the tab key and you should find a select all button, and a delete button. so first hit select all, followed by delete. You'll get a warning asking if you really want to do this? Answer yes. It'll then delete any files left over. Now depending on how the program is, it may next ask you to delete registry entries, this is the same as left over files. Don't worry, this is safe to do because it only deletes the registry entries that are for the application you're uninstalling, it won't delete anything else but that. So do the select all and delete thing again and answer yes. Sometimes, you might even see a screen that just has a tree view, but it has nothing displayed. In that case just do what you would normally do and hit select all and delete and that'll do it. After all that is done revo will display a dialogue with a finish button. Hit that, and you're done. you can then delete another program or close the program it's up to you. Sometimes you need to use the, Insert + F10, keystroke to open the Jaws task list find the Revo remove option press enter because you'll have landed on a blank window so you need to bring Revo back into focus. Re: [JAWS-Users] message from web page
Hi Kevin, The procedures can vary considerably depending on the type of malware and what the malware is intended to do. Take care. Confirm that you want to end the process by using spacebar on the button again. You might need to close the task manager and open it again to confirm if the iexplore.exe process was stopped as it remains in the list until you close the task manager. If after you reopen the task manager the iexplore.exe is gone from the list then just close task manager, if not then kill any remaining iexplore.exe processes. You can then go into your control panel and open Internet Explorer options. Tab across until you find the button for clearing Internet cache and do that procedure. [JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 corrupts my system
I’m currently defaulting to running Jaws 15. Jaws 16 does not read hidden text in Word, so I use 15. Hidden text is essential to my contract work. I did report the issue to FS Support in December. So, now with the most recent update of Jaws 16, I decided to give it a go and see if the problem was fixed. It’s not. In the process of installing the update, though, I was left with a system where first letter navigation did not work on the Desk Top, the Window 8 Search was broken, and messages in WLM were not showing as un read or read. I also noticed that although I converted my license to the Standard version, Jaws still announced itself as Jaws Professional after the update. There were likely other problems as well, but I didn’t look further. I had to use Narrator to get to the Control Panel and run a system restore to undo the update. Then I went back to Jaws 15. I feel like I wasted my money on an SMA covering Jaws 16 and 17. Jean For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

?P.S. OE6 can also be uninstalled from Programs Features or from the OE6 folder in Program Files X86 but, from past experience it's best to use Revo. Also, what antivirus are you running on this computer? Also, what OE6 installer are you running? Are you running the installer as the Administrator? It must be installed using the Admininstrator option from the context menu. Once the installation is complete it's necessary for the computer to be restarted to complete the installation. Have you looked in Users / Name Folder / App data / Local / Identities to see if default folders are installing Here? I ask about which antivirus because if you're running Vipre, Vipre has to be uninstalled before OE6 will install. Yes, I do mean uninstalled not just turned off! , if you're running Nod32, there is a settings change that needs to be made in the Nod32 menues. Take care. I would like to completely uninstall Outlook Express from his new computer so I can re-install it properly. Since under Windows XP, Outlook Express was a Windows component instead of an application, there is no uninstallation entry for it, so it can't be uninstalled using Add/Remove Programs or cCleaner. Would it still be shown as a Windows Component in Windows 7? Could it be uninstalled using the Revo Uninstaller? If so, will the Free version of the Revo Uninstaller do the job on a 64 bit system? Go into task manager by using CTRL with shift and escape. Use CTRL with tab key until you are in the processes page of the dialog box and in the list of running processes. If focus is in the list of processes then use the letter I until you find iexplore.exe. Tab to the End task button and use spacebar. You might then want to run CCleaner to empty temp files from other locations. Killing the processes and emptying the cache should work unless the malware got installed. Take care. No, hitting the ENTER key once does not add a blank line. It marks a new line. In the event of a blank line, for which you can press the ENTER key twice to create one, as above this one, JAWS will say 'blank' when you arrow up, or arrow down from the previous text. -Original Message- From: Onwardbob Sent: Tuesday, February 10, 2015 4:04 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Making blank lines appear between paragraphs inWord 2010? Re: [JAWS-Users] trying to read PDF files from a Yahoo groups filesection
There is the JAWS 16 convenient OCR feature. I'm not sure how it would handle large pdf's, but it's fine on smaller ones such as letters. I'd like if it could handle mixed-format pdf's, i.e., those containing images of text and straight text. I put that forward to FS, and it may have been passed on to whomever is responsible for developing the document OCR. (To be clear, I'd distinguish between 'graphic' and 'image' pdf's. Graphic could refer to purely pictorial, with no text in it.) -Original Message- From: Shoshana Hathaway Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2015 11:28 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] trying to read PDF files from a Yahoo groups filesection Thanks, Flor! I can then tab into the dialogue, and disable pointing device is one of the options. When I disable and leave it disabled, it carries over after reboots. I should also add that I turned off the FN key functionalities, if that helps. (I used the HW Utility to do that.) What I have (I am not certain of model number) is either a Satelllite L550 or L500. There is also a checkbox in this pointing device dialogue for 'palm' which, I believe, is the source of all of our troubles, as - can you believe it? - the palm resting on the mmousepad can at as a mouse triggering mechanism. Perhaps it's for those who have arthrities or who have no or no dexterous fingers. Anyway, I think I've made it harder to set it off by increasing the percentage on that particular slider. I did much of this 'customisation' by exploring, exploring. -Original Message- From: John R Vaughn Sent: Monday, February 16, 2015 1:45 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling the mouse pad on a Dell laptop How do you do this on a toshiba laptop? I can disable the mousepad on my Toshiba Satellite C 50-B each time I start the computer, but cannot do this permanently. Every rebot requires turing the mouse off. However, at the moment i'm experimenting with decreasing the sensitivity, so that you would have to actually press one of the mouse buttons rather than merely touch it to activate it. Then, there will be an option to disable the driver. e mousepad That should kill the little critter. Re: [JAWS-Users] disk cleanup in win 8.1
This doesn't answer your question, but I found it pretty cool. You can type C:\Windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /sagerun:1 in a Run window and hit Enter. The disk cleanup operation will start right away. Other wise, you can go find your c drive, and press alt enter, tab once and disc clean up will be right there. “Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty and persistence.” Colin Powell -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Lenny McHugh Sent: Sunday, February 15, 2015 7:56 PM To: JFW List Subject: [JAWS-Users] disk cleanup in win 8.1 Where do you find disk clean up in win 8.1?--- Please visit my web page It’s motivational, inspirational with a touch of humor There is also a very extensive resource list for the blind http://www.LennyMcHugh.com International Brotherhood of Magicians member #43990R For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
