Jim, with all due respect, both my experience and Freedom Scientific state 
that a re-install of Jaws 16 is not necessary from Windows 8.1 to 10.


I meant no offence by my statement, I was simply stating a facts as released 
by Freedom Scientific and my own experience installing Windows 10 on 46 
computers to date, all of which were using Windows 8.1.


This is not a spitting contest, just one person passing information on to 
another.


I'm glad your experiences are vast, and you can offer as much experience as 
you can to the list, after all, that's what this list is here for, but I 
will not curtail my passing on of knowledge simply because you feel I am 
berating you for something I never berated you for.


Anyway, what matters is that the person got their installation of Windows 10 
done using both our experiences, so let's be thankful, and leave it at that.

Jaws will work OK, but not as well as it should, unless you install it new
and fresh in w-10.
I speak from experience.
I have upgraded two w-7, and two w-8.1 computers, from beginning to end.
This includes customizing them as well.
The Start button, and search edit field, and the live tile region are
effected negatively, unless you reinstall Jaws.
I have assisted in many other upgrades.
Do not tell me I am wrong, Microsoft recommends, any users of Screen reading
software, to uninstall and reinstall them.
So, if you want a smooth running w-10 computer with Jaws 16 or 17, you
should follow Microsoft recommendation.
Just helping people get the most out of w-10 with Jaws...
How much experience do you have in upgrading computers to w-10?
When I give out instructions, I try to give them out as if everyone was on
their own with no sited help.
I have a great respect for those who are making it alone.
Each day is a challenge for all blind people, more so, when you are alone.
So, I research my answers when I give a step by step guide, as if each blind
person were doing the steps by themselves with no sited help.
This way hopefully, they will not have any problems.
So, again, its not a matter of being right about reinstalling Jaws, it’s a
matter of getting max performance out of Jaws 16 and 17 on your w-10
computer.

Your information is incorrect.

Since he is using Windows 8.1, he only need download and install the latest
version of Jaws 16, then install Windows 10.

No need to re-install Jaws 16 once the Windows 10 is complete, as it should
come up working after the installation.

You're thinking about Windows 7, of which he is not using.

Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.

Also, I've seen a setting in IE where it will auto-populate
edit fields with stored data.

Each year I participate in the beta program. Generally over
the beta cycle, I submit many bug reports. I wish there was
a way for some of the information to remembered each year
after the first report was sent. For instance, each time I
submit I need to enter first name, last name, Jaws serial
number, phone number, email address, operating system, etc.
This is a lot of unnecessary typing on the part of the
person submitting the report. Is there any way for these
fields to auto populate?

Hi Kimsan,

These folders which you are referring to are the default folders that are 
created when you create an Email account, and I do not believe that you can 
delete them. Also, since you have configured the messages from this account 
to be redirected to the inbox of your other account, if you now delete the 
entire account, you will stop receiving all Emails for that account. The 
best that you ccan possibly do, is to "close" the main folder for the 
account, the one that reads, "Gmail (your user name)", and just skip over it 
when in your mail client.

there when I navigate down the folder list in outlook 2013 and has it's
inbox, drafts, sent folders etc. Am I able to hide or remove that?

Try the following:
1. Alt + Tab, to the Jaws window.
2. Press, Alt + the letter O, to open options.
3. Press enter on, Basics.
4. Tab to, Run Jaws from the system tray checkbox unchecked, & press the 
spacebar to check this box.
5. Tab to, Okay, press enter to save your change & close Jaws options
6. Restart Jaws or your computer for the change to take afect.

There is. You can use the settings center to tell JAWS that on that
particular domain, you would want to revert from Smart Navigation Controls
and Tables, back to off. Here is the section in the What's New that talks
about that process and how to do it.

Use Settings Center to Configure Settings for a Specific Web Site

In JAWS 17, you can now apply settings changes to a specific web site domain
using Settings Center. For instance, if you use Smart Navigation and you
have a particular web site where you would prefer not to have this feature
active, you can open Settings Center from the current site and turn it off.
Smart Navigation will continue working on all other web sites.

To configure web site specific settings, do the following:

Open the web site where you want settings changes to apply.
Press INSERT+F2, select Settings Center, and press ENTER.
Press SHIFT+TAB to move to the application list and locate Default.
Press DOWN ARROW one time and you should find the name of your current site
followed by (domain). For example, if you open Settings Center from the
Freedom Scientific web site, you should see something like
www.freedomscientific.com (Domain).
While the web site name is selected, press TAB to move to the Search
edit and type all or part of the setting you want to change. For example,
"smart" for Smart Navigation, "Forms" for Forms Mode options, etc.
Press DOWN ARROW to move to the filtered results of the Settings Center
tree view and make your preferred settings changes.
Press TAB to move to the OK button and activate it with the SPACEBAR.
The changes are made and saved. Settings Center closes.

Now, whatever you have set for the current web site should only be applied
when any pages on this site are open and have focus. For example, if you set
Smart Navigation to Controls and Tables for the Freedom Scientific web site,
it should be off for all other web sites which is the default, unless you
are on Freedomscientific.com.

 Doesn't look like the current smart navigation. Did not notice that
striking certain keys, such as H, would jump from heading  to heading.
 Looks like we have to do three keystrokes to get the same thing we now get
with one keystroke.
 They are talking about doing the keystrokes twice quickly.

With the latest JAWS release, Jaws 17 beta, it says a 4
finger swipe  up then down should bring up a keyboard but I
cannot get that to work on my tablet running windows 8.1

screen. You only have to activate the touch cursor if you

tablet in touch screen mode or is it automatic?

Hmm, before shutting down are all applications closed?  Also, there are
processes in the task manager that people check to make sure that are not
running.  Also the message to restart your computer maybe updates completed
installing?

  I'm trying to think of other reasons Ive heard over the years but for
starters, before you shut down, make sure all of your applications are
closed, and on the jaws-users site I believe there is a shutdown excicutable
that you can place on your desktop, or taskbar and simply click it for the
computer to shutdown.  You can also do windows key x and up arrow to the
shutdown submenu and locate the shutdown option.

Hi Scorpio,
Jaws will work OK, but not as well as it should, unless you install it new 
and fresh in w-10.

I speak from experience.
I have upgraded two w-7, and two w-8.1 computers, from beginning to end.
This includes customizing them as well.
The Start button, and search edit field, and the live tile region are 
effected negatively, unless you reinstall Jaws.

I have assisted in many other upgrades.
Do not tell me I am wrong, Microsoft recommends, any users of Screen reading 
software, to uninstall and reinstall them.
So, if you want a smooth running w-10 computer with Jaws 16 or 17, you 
should follow Microsoft recommendation.

Just helping people get the most out of w-10 with Jaws...
How much experience do you have in upgrading computers to w-10?
When I give out instructions, I try to give them out as if everyone was on 
their own with no sited help.

I have a great respect for those who are making it alone.
Each day is a challenge for all blind people, more so, when you are alone.
So, I research my answers when I give a step by step guide, as if each blind 
person were doing the steps by themselves with no sited help.

This way hopefully, they will not have any problems.
So, again, its not a matter of being right about reinstalling Jaws, it’s a 
matter of getting max performance out of Jaws 16 and 17 on your w-10 
computer.

Hi Jim,

Your information is incorrect.

Since he is using Windows 8.1, he only need download and install the latest
version of Jaws 16, then install Windows 10.

No need to re-install Jaws 16 once the Windows 10 is complete, as it should
come up working after the installation.

You're thinking about Windows 7, of which he is not using.

You can put both the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions of JAWS portable on the
same thumb drive assuming it's large enough to hold them.  For JAWS 15
portable, it looks like the download files and the extracted files will need
around 200 MEG.  After you've downloaded both the 32 bit and the 64 bit
files from FS, copy them to the thumb drive.  Now press enter on one of the
downloaded files.  The first screen that appears asks where you want to
extract the files to.  The default is the high-level folder of the thumb
drive.  Assuming you chose the 32 bit version, tab once and you'll be on an
edit box that specifies the high level folder of the thumb drive (Drive
Letter colon backslash).  Press the end key to move past the backslash and
enter a folder name such as JAWS15-32.  Then tab to the next button and
press enter.  Now all of the JAWS portable files for the version you chose
will be placed in the folder you specified.  Now repeat the steps above to
extract the files for the other version and specify a folder name like
JAWS15-64, assuming you are now installing the 64 bit version.  Using
Windows 7, I don't believe I've ever seen an auto run dialog popup
automatically.  So I create a startup file in the thumb drive high-level
folder to start JAWS  portable.  In the high-level folder create a DOS batch
file with a name like JAWS15.bat.  The file extension must be .bat.  Now
position on the newly created file and press the applications key or
shift+f10 to bring up the context menu.  Arrow down one time to edit and
press enter to open.  Now copy the 6 lines that follow and paste them into
the open batch file.  Make sure the folder name in the batch file match what
you named the folders.  Then press control+s to save and alt+f4 to close.

screen on your tablet, just start touching the screen. You only have to
activate the touch cursor if you want to use keyboard commands to simulate
touch gestures. I've gotten myself out of many a jam that way.

If you follow my step by step instruction on the previous email.
You should have no problems.
As far as backing up.
go to your, users folder on your C: drive.
Do a copy, Control+c.
Go to your external drive main tree, press Control+v, to paste your users 
file there as a backup of your files...

plan to upgrade soon.  The part of my question that didn't get
answered is how to do a system backup so I can back all my stuff up on
to my external hardrive in case my upgrade goes crazy and I lose
things?  I don't anticipate that, but you know how computers can be.

Hi Lynn,
Yes, you should uninstall and reinstall Jaws 16 or 17, after upgrading to 
w-10.
There are places where it will not work well in w-10, Jaws needs  to be 
freshly installed.

Keep your shared components and keep your settings.
After reinstalling jaws, you do not have to restart your computer.
There are two settings you need to check.
Reset your short cut key for Jaws, Control+ALT+j.
Make sure that Jaws is checked, to come on at the log on screen.
All your other settings will remain as they were.

32 bit version depending on what system you have.
Download the tool and save it to your download folder for
future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification
area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this
gives you a verification email.
Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure
you have all the latest updates.
Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws
fragmented files and so on from your system.
Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your
computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending
on your download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several
screens itself updating your computer and will get it ready
for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the
license agreement, check the yes and press enter on next.
Again, the program will run through several screens by
itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60
minutes to complete.
After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on
narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on
talking on the desktop.
very important, uninstall jaws.
Keep shared settings and personal settings.
Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come
on talking with all your settings, except for 2 of them.
Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.

 Doesn't look like the current smart navigation. Did not notice that

 They are talking about doing the keystrokes twice quickly.

 you can find windows update by performing the following steps. 1. Press
windows+I to get to settings. 2. Right arrow to update and security, down
arrow will not work in the settings app. 3. The first item is windows
update. 4. Press enter.5. Windows update will check for any available
updates , if it finds any, they will be downloaded and installed
automatically, on all versions of windows 10, including insider preview
builds, of which I am running the latest, build 10537.

I submit many bug reports. I wish there was a way for some of the
information to remembered each year after the first report was sent. For
instance, each time I submit I need to enter first name, last name, Jaws
serial number, phone number, email address, operating system, etc.
This is a lot of unnecessary typing on the part of the person submitting the
report. Is there any way for these fields to auto populate?

Do you have cookies enabled in IE?

Also, I've seen a setting in IE where it will auto-populate edit fields with
stored data.

Hi Steve,
Here is my instructions on customizing w-10, which includes default 
programs.
*After reinstalling Jaws 16 or 17, I would check the following areas on the 
windows 10 computer.

First of all, I would check my default programs.
windows key+I, enter on system, arrow down to default apps and press enter.
Tab too, Default browser, which by default will be Edge.
Press the spacebar on The Edge, tab to IE, press enter or spacebar, to make 
it your default.
Also as you tab across this page, you can set your email client, Music 
player and other defaults programs.
Turn off all of the background apps you will not be using, all are on by 
default.

windows key+I, go to privacy and press enter.
Go down to back ground apps and press enter.
Tab across and uncheck most of these apps.
Each time you uncheck one of them it will kick you back to the home button, 
just tab back to the next app in the list.
Also, make sure you turn off letting other computers to receive updates from 
your computer, this will slow  down IE and your computer.

Windows key+I, go to update and security and press enter.
Tab to advanced options and press enter.
Tab four times too, choose how your updates are delivered and press enter.
Make sure when you tab that this sharing feature of updates is turned off, 
this will effect your computers performance.

Microsoft leaves all these back ground things on by default.
One more area to check is your live tiles.
Press enter on the start button, down arrow to your apps, right and left, up 
and down arrow around in them.

Press the application key, you will have different choices.
For example:
Turn off live tile, if you are not using them I would turn them off.
You can also, Unpin apps from the start list.
resize sub menu, small, medium, and large which is wide.
Another area to check is the All Apps list:
Press enter on the start button, up arrow to All Apps, press enter.
Down arrow through All the apps in the start button region.
Press the applications key on any app you wish to uninstall, arrow down to 
uninstall and press enter, press the spacebar to confirm.

Some apps are built into w-10, you can not uninstall them.
all these things combined will slow down your computer.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 16 and windows 7 with Sirius xm radio online

Has anybody tried to access sirius-xm online stations with windows 7 and 
jaws 16?  I signed up for a trial last week but haven't been able to get any 
further than just logging in.  A month or so ago somebody on the list 
mentioned that jaws 16 works better with sirius-xm than it has in the past 
but it sounded like the person was using windows 10.

There is. You can use the settings center to tell JAWS that on that particular 
domain, you would want to revert from Smart Navigation Controls and Tables, 
back to off. Here is the section in the What's New that talks about that 
process and how to do it.

Use Settings Center to Configure Settings for a Specific Web Site

In JAWS 17, you can now apply settings changes to a specific web site domain 
using Settings Center. For instance, if you use Smart Navigation and you have a 
particular web site where you would prefer not to have this feature active, you 
can open Settings Center from the current site and turn it off. Smart 
Navigation will continue working on all other web sites.

To configure web site specific settings, do the following:

Open the web site where you want settings changes to apply.
Press INSERT+F2, select Settings Center, and press ENTER.
Press SHIFT+TAB to move to the application list and locate Default. Press 
DOWN ARROW one time and you should find the name of your current site followed 
by (domain). For example, if you open Settings Center from the Freedom 
Scientific web site, you should see something like www.freedomscientific.com 
(Domain).
While the web site name is selected, press TAB to move to the Search edit 
and type all or part of the setting you want to change. For example, "smart" 
for Smart Navigation, "Forms" for Forms Mode options, etc.
Press DOWN ARROW to move to the filtered results of the Settings Center 
tree view and make your preferred settings changes.
Press TAB to move to the OK button and activate it with the SPACEBAR. The 
changes are made and saved. Settings Center closes.

Now, whatever you have set for the current web site should only be applied when 
any pages on this site are open and have focus. For example, if you set Smart 
Navigation to Controls and Tables for the Freedom Scientific web site, it 
should be off for all other web sites which is the default, unless you are on 
Freedomscientific.com.

CTRL+RIGHT ARROW commands move by control instead of character and word.
This makes navigation such as moving across toolbars, tab strips, and 
navigation links more like navigating around a desktop application. Pressing 
the Say Character, Say Word, or Say Line commands twice quickly changes to the 
traditional navigation by character, word, line, sentence, and paragraph so you 
can review the text of the control. Smart Navigation resumes when you press 
ESC, or move to a different control

You were probably running JAWS from the system tray. Go to the options menu
and then to basics. Check the box that says "run JAWS from system tray" and
use the space bar to check it. Then tab to ok and press enter. You will need
to restart JAWS for the setting to work. Now when you press insert J, you
will go right to the menu.

[JAWS-Users] Selecting / Copying Groups Of Text In Notepad

Hi All,

Running Widows 7 64 bit Pro & Jaws 16 latest.  How can I select blocks / 
groups of text from a large text file & copy them to the clipboard.  What I 
want to do is select particular lines or paragraphs from 1 page of a text 
file then, move to another page & select / append more selected text...

I know this can be done in Word but, the keystrokes from Word don't work 
with Notepad.  Unless I'm doing something wrong, which can be a great 
possibility!  All help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks much.

Since he is using Windows 8.1, he only need download and install the 
latest

version of Jaws 16, then install Windows 10.

No need to re-install Jaws 16 once the Windows 10 is complete, as it

You're thinking about Windows 7, of which he is not using.

Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.
Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to
complete.
After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.

Well I tried, honestly, I had a ton of stuff I needed to arrow through to
get the one page, instead if it landing on the page I did have open.  
Oh, well, if it works I am satisfied.  Not sure how I like the smart nav
yet, sometimes it is mostly confusing, sometimes it is great.  However, I
have not spent as much time with it as I had planned as phone update came
out first and am trying to learn braille display commands and use of phone
for something I will be doing at church very soon.  
Thanks.  I did listen, however, I had not delved into the help as of today.

Life has been slow but has sped up in the last four days and after three
months of retirement and one month before that of illness I am not the
multitasker I once was.

Hi Mike,
I have Win 7 Pro and JAWS 16 and use Notepad.
Notepad uses arrow up & down and I use the keypad for navigation as well.
To highlight text I move to the left of the first letter and then hold down
SHIFT and arrow right to highlight the text or hit END to highlight to the
end of the line.
Then I use the old WordStar CTRL + X to cut it and you know the rest.

Jaws will work OK, but not as well as it should, unless you install it new 
and fresh in w-10.

I speak from experience.
I have upgraded two w-7, and two w-8.1 computers, from beginning to end.
This includes customizing them as well.
The Start button, and search edit field, and the live tile region are 
effected negatively, unless you reinstall Jaws.

I have assisted in many other upgrades.
Do not tell me I am wrong, Microsoft recommends, any users of Screen 
reading software, to uninstall and reinstall them.
So, if you want a smooth running w-10 computer with Jaws 16 or 17, you 
should follow Microsoft recommendation.

their own with no sited help.

I have a great respect for those who are making it alone.
Each day is a challenge for all blind people, more so, when you are alone.

blind person were doing the steps by themselves with no sited help.

This way hopefully, they will not have any problems.
So, again, its not a matter of being right about reinstalling Jaws, it’s a 
matter of getting max performance out of Jaws 16 and 17 on your w-10 
computer.

Since he is using Windows 8.1, he only need download and install the 
latest

version of Jaws 16, then install Windows 10.

No need to re-install Jaws 16 once the Windows 10 is complete, as it

You're thinking about Windows 7, of which he is not using.

says B. and when I try to read by character, it doesn't announce the space. 
If I go on, it appears to be writing on the same line even though I hit 
enter for a new line. I think some setting has been changed. I'm sure 
there's someone out there on this extremely savvy list who can explain how I 
can set MS Word back to default settings. I'm running MSW 2010 on a Windows 
7 Computer with  latest version of JAWS. Thanks in advance for any help.

I managed to resolve the issue last night.
I ended up importing the data file for my gmail pst over to my charter.pst
and after doing that I was able to delete/remove the account with the
folders you mentioned.
Now, when I navigate down the list, I am not hearing the gmail stuff.

These folders which you are referring to are the default folders that are
created when you create an Email account, and I do not believe that you can
delete them. Also, since you have configured the messages from this account
to be redirected to the inbox of your other account, if you now delete the
entire account, you will stop receiving all Emails for that account. The
best that you ccan possibly do, is to "close" the main folder for the
account, the one that reads, "Gmail (your user name)", and just skip over it
when in your mail client.

Hi Jo,

Below are 2 different notes that I've saved & used in Word 2010 so, I'm sure 
they'll work for you as well:

From: Jean Menzies
Creating a new Normal template with the page numbers you want is fairly
easy. First, though, you should make a backup of your normal.dotm template.

Based on Windows 8.1 and Word 2013, there are some steps to follow

1. Make sure you can see hidden folders and files on your PC. I will asume
you know how to do that.

2. Close Word.

3. Go to C: \ Users \ Username \ App data \ Roming \ Microsoft \ Templates.
Arrow down to Normal.dotm and rename it to something like OldNormal.dotm.
Note that if you simply delete this file, Word will automatically create a
new Normal.dotm template when you open Word.

4. Open Word.

5. Start a new blank document however you do that.

6. Make any changes you want to anything. That includes page number styles,
font, etc.

7. Unless you want it, delete any visible text you may have typed as you set
up the things you want files to be based on.

8. Go to the File menu and choose Save As.

9. Not sure what you'll see, but you may only see a list of folders to
choose from, etc. Ignore that and tab to the Browse button. Press enter.

10. Tab to the File Type combo box and arrow down until you hear the file
type called Word Macro-Enabled template (*.dotm). That's what you want.

11. In the filename box, type Normal and press enter.

12. You have now saved a new Normal template that will be used for every new
document.

Note that if you mess up or panic or want to revert to your old file, just
go back into the Templates folder and rename your OldNormal.dotm back to
Normal.dotm. Or, just delete the Normal.dotm file you have and let Word
rebuild one from its default settings.

For those who want to know wen their templates get changed, you can also
have Word tell you when changes are made and it will ask you if you want to
save changes to the template. That's typically if you create macros, etc.
That setting is under the Save options

Here are steps for trying to reset your normal template without deleting it,
followed by steps for deleting the normal template so it can be created
again when you restart your computer and launch Word again.  If you have no
macros or specially created styles then you might want to just delete the
template.  Otherwise you can try the first set of steps shown below to
restore the defaults.

Restoring default settings to the template:

1.  Type or paste the following into the Windows start menu search box:
%appdata%\microsoft\templates
2.  Find the normal.DOTM file.
3.  Ppress the application key and arrow down to the Open menu item.
4.  Press enter key to open the template.
5.  To delete any unwanted text use CTRL+a (the select all command) and
press the delete key.
6.  Press CTRL+A again and press delete key again.  This deletes the ending
paragraph mark that remains after deleting unwanted text.
7.  Press Ctrl+Space Bar. This sets the character formatting for the
paragraph back to its default based on the underlying style.
8.  Press Ctrl+Q. This sets the paragraph formatting for the paragraph back
to its default, again based on the underlying style.
9.  Save the template.
10.  Restart the computer.
11.  Start Word.

Deleting the Normal.DOTM file:

1.  Press the Windows key and type or paste the following path into the
search box:
%appdata%\microsoft\templates
2.  Find the normal.DOTM file and delete it.
3.  Restart your computer to register the changed entries in the registry.
4.  Open Word.
The default should be Calibri font with a size of 11 point and the normal
style being used.

Great job.
here are some tips on customizing w-10, now that you have installed it.
I have added a few things.
Customizing w-10 with Jaws.
After reinstalling Jaws 16 or 17, I would check the following areas on the 
windows 10 computer.

First of all, I would check my default programs.
windows key+I, Open settings.
You are in a horizontal list of 9 items, use your right and left arrow keys 
to move across the items.

enter on system, arrow down to default apps and press enter.
Tab across this window, look for the browser which by default is Microsoft 
edge.
Press the spacebar on the edge, tab to IE, press the spacebar, this will set 
IE as your default browser.
Do the same thing with the different defaults programs, for example email 
clients.
Tab to email default, press the spacebar on it, tab to the email client you 
wish to use, and press spacebar, to set as default.
Here is how you Turn off all of the background apps you will not be using, 
all are on by default.

windows key+I, go to privacy and press enter.
Go down to back ground apps and press enter.
Tab across and uncheck most of these apps.
Each time you uncheck one of them it will kick you back to the home button, 
just tab back to the next app in the list, make your choice to leave it on 
or turn it off.
The next thing you want to do is go to the Windows update and change the 
following.

Press Windows key+I, go to update and security and press enter.
Tab to advanced options and press enter.
Tab four times too, choose how your updates are delivered and press enter.
Make sure when you tab that this sharing feature called, Let other computers 
send me updates is turned off, and let my computer send updates to other 
computers is also turned off.

this will effect your computers speed and performance, especially in IE.
Microsoft leaves all these back ground things on by default.
Next area you want to check is your live tiles region.
Press enter on the start button, down arrow to your apps, right and left, up 
and down arrow around in them.
Press the application key on the highlighted app, you will have different 
choices.

For example:
Turn off live tile, if you are not using them I would turn them off.
After turning the live tiles off, Press the application key again, Go down 
to Unpin from start, press enter,  this will remove them from the start list 
region.
You can also resize them, press the application key, go  to the resize sub 
menu and choose, small, medium, and large which is wide.

Next, if you want to uninstall an unwanted app on your computer.
Press enter on the start button.
Up arrow to , All Apps, press enter.
Down arrow through the list of apps, if you find one you wish to uninstall.
Press the applications key, down arrow to uninstall and press enter, press 
the spacebar to confirm.
Many of these apps are built into the w-10 system, you will not be able to 
uninstall them.
Next, You want to turn this setting off, unless you want your computer 
sending a lot of information to Microsoft.

Press Windows key+I, open settings.
Go to Privacy, press enter.
go down to Speech, inking, and typing, press enter.
Make sure that it says, getting to know me, and not stop getting to know me.
If it says, stop getting to know me, just press the spacebar to change it 
back to getting to know me.

all these things combined will slow down your computer.

I decided to use the media creation tool after all.
it took 2 tries to get her going, but I'm now a proud win10 user on this

I have heard and experienced, that using the Windows update way, is very

Hi, I am getting this strange alert.  When I try to start my 
laptop, it says "You need to restart your computer." But when I 
hit shut down, it says "Jaws for windows." It only plays the 
startup sound when doing a restart.  How do I make windows 10

I believe you are correct in that Notepad simply doesn't have the ability to 
do more intricate text slection, just the basic text selection.  Oh well,

Thank you very much for your input.  I've been using the slection process
you mentioned along with holding down the shift key while arrowing down to
select multiple lines of text at a time but, I was hopeing there was
keystrokes that would select blocks / groups of text at 1 time like you can

I have Win 7 Pro and JAWS 16 and use Notepad.
Notepad uses arrow up & down and I use the keypad for navigation as well.
To highlight text I move to the left of the first letter and then hold down
SHIFT and arrow right to highlight the text or hit END to highlight to the
end of the line.
Then I use the old WordStar CTRL + X to cut it and you know the rest.

Running Widows 7 64 bit Pro & Jaws 16 latest.  How can I select blocks /
groups of text from a large text file & copy them to the clipboard.  What I
want to do is select particular lines or paragraphs from 1 page of a text
file then, move to another page & select / append more selected text...

I know this can be done in Word but, the keystrokes from Word don't work
with Notepad.  Unless I'm doing something wrong, which can be a great
possibility!  All help will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks much.

[JAWS-Users] IE on Windows 10

   Hi Steve,
Here is what you do to make IE your default browser in Windows 10. Hold down 
the Windows key and press I to open up settings. Next, press enter on 
system. Next, down arrow to default programs. Press enter on default 
programs. Tab to where it says that Edge is your default and press space bar 
on that. Tab one more time and you will be in a list of browsers that are 
installed on your computer. Just choose IE in that list and press the space 
bar and exit settings. Take care.
