Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
I am also going to buy a laptop, that is Lenovo Thinkpad x270. This is a small laptop of 12.5 inches screen size, and have pretty good spects. I am not aware of its compatibility with jaws though. But I am a jaws user and hope jaws will work on it since it has windows 10. On 6/15/17, David Moorewrote: > Hi all, > I have two laptops. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
Hi Tammy, I have primarily used Toshiba and Dell. Others in my house have used HP, although not with JAWS. In my opinion, all 3 brands have been very reliable. With that said, my husband had a Toshiba and it was nothing but trouble. I have used laptops for nearly 30 years. None of them have had a separate number pad from the keyboard. With my very first laptop, I attempted to use an external number pad, and could never find one that allowed me to execute JAWS commands. As a result I have learned to use the embedded number pad, and have the JAWS Keyboard layout set to Desktop. Sometimes this does require interesting finger gymnastics, but it works for me. When I'm looking for a new laptop, I look for the one that provides me with the most up-to-date features for the lowest cost. Yes, this probably means that I will spend more money than I want, but I've always gotten 5 plus years out of my laptops. I also look for the lightest weight one with a keyboard that feels right under my fingers, i.e. shape and size of the keys, spacing between keys, and firmness when activating. Finally, battery life is a factor as well. With my current Toshiba dinosaur, I've gotten spoiled by a button between the keyboard and the mouse that allows me to turn the mouse on and off as needed. My work Dell laptop requires me to use a keyboard command to turn the mouse pad on and off, and that is not so bad. As much as I would love to say that I can tackle everything and anything on my computer without some sighted help here and there, that is just not the case. So being able to turn the mouse on and off as needed is very convenient. Many many years ago I bought one of my computers from MicroCenter and their service was great. They removed all of the junk and even installed JAWS for me. Another family member went there a number of years later and was not happy with the service. The last time I checked, their prices were higher than Best Buy where I've bought the past 2 computers over the past 11 years. Also with the last 2 purchases, I used the Dell and the Toshiba technical support. Both were very good at that time. The Toshiba tech support figured out how to turn off the "touch sensitive control panel so that I could not accidently turn things on and off. Now with the Microsoft Disability Support line, you have another source for help. Although sometimes having all of these support options can get you in a position where they each point the finger at the other one to address the problem. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing. My current Toshiba is now six and a half years old, so I'm sure a replacement is not too far around the corner. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
My most recent personal laptop is an ASUS. If you are comfortable with using the JAWS laptop layout, I really enjoy this machine. It isn't a touch device but has a great feel on your lap and the weight of the device is so incredible to feel that such a powerful device is so not heavy. Most importantly for me, typing on the keyboard feels solid. To be clear this machine isn't for everyone. It has a smaller screen but my goals were powerful performance in the smallest machine I could find. I bought it from Amazon originally. The model I purchased doesn't seem to be available from Amazon but maybe there is a newer model. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LHUAFAQ/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF 8=1 -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Greg Washington Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2017 5:50 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions Iagree about Dell laptop computers being a good pick. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
I use a Lenovo P50S laptop for work that has a keyboard with a numeric keypad. I know JAWS can be switched to laptop layout, but I prefer having the extra keys just for use with screen readers. JAWS is fast and responsive on this laptop with a braille display (Focus 40 Blue) and Vocalizer Expressive speech, as long as nothing crashes, as some applications unfortunately tend to do. I recently bought a similar laptop to use at home - a Lenovo P51. I can't comment yet, as it's still on the way. Audiobookfanwrote: > I like Toshiba. I currently have a Lenovo that I like very much. Iagree about Dell laptop computers being a good pick. I loved Toshiba laptops but they no longer make laptops. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
I like Toshiba. I currently have a Lenovo that I like very much. I would *strongly* disagree with the comment that a macbook is the best Windows laptop. Apple hardware is *way* overpriced. You could probably buy 2 Windows laptops for the price of a macBook. I think more importantly than the brand is what is inside. I prefer Intel over AMD. This Lenovo laptop has 8 GB of ram and a 250 GB SSD. I really, really like having an SSD. Everything is so fast. I just plug in an external 1 TB drive for additional data storage. It's all very fast. I also use an external wireless USB keyboard, so I didn't mind that the laptop keyboard didn't include a keypad. My laptop also has bluetooth, so that would be an option, but I've not used a bluetooth keyboard with my laptop. I have connected bluetooth headphones, though. As far as getting rid of bloatware is concerned, I understand the next version of Windows will have an option to install a fresh copy of Windows built right in. If I recall correctly, it's called Windows Refresh or something like that. It downloads a fresh copy of Windows and does a complete reinstall, keeping only some of the built-in Windows apps. All other apps and programs are removed, getting rid of all bloatware. I think this is the best idea Microsoft has had since they launched Windows. I know if I were buying a new computer, the first thing I'd do is bring it home and run a Windows Refresh, giving me a nice clean Windows to begin setting up. Hope this helps. I open a PDF document, but I can't figure out how to make it read. Arrowing up and down just says blank or it's completely silent. Tabbing just says tab, but no text is spoken. What am I doing wrong? You should download the latest build. It is winamp v 5.666. Go to winamp.com and you will still find a link to it, if I'm not mistaken. The programme was installed on my PC by the guy who built it, but he made some kind of mistake and the programme was not able to save its settings until I changed some of the permission settings. However, I have since had to reinstall the programme and never had any such issues again. Just make sure you are an administrator when you install. There should not be any other applications installed on your pC with the official install package. Just install and proceed as normal. You will be better off nowadays setting default programmes in windows 10 itself rather than trying to get winamp to do this for you. When the computer asks you to choose a programme to play a certain type of file, choose winamp from the list and check the box which says 'always do this", if that's what you want. I have noticed that for some reason windows 10 likes to minimise winamp frequently. Alt-w within the programme should fix this and make your main window "visible" again. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Holger Fiallo Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2017 5:37 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Editing MP3 files OK. Re: [JAWS-Users] Editing MP3 files
if something ever stops working properly in Windows 10, too, you can always run it in compatibility mode. You will have to pick which Windows version you want to "revert" to, so this may mean experimenting with the settings. I noticed the focus issues, too, and running in compatibility mode seemed to help, but I also read that this can cause other issues and that it isn't really recommended that you do this by people at the Winamp forum. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Scorpio Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2017 7:00 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Editing MP3 files The last released version of Winamp works perfectly well with Windows 10 Professional, 64 bit anniversary edition. Lenovo systems have served my needs quite well for a long period of time already. I got a new one and a couple refurbished from Amazon and even the model I got in 2009 is still working along with the rest of them. -Original Message- From: Tammy Freitag Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2017 3:41 PM To: jaws-users-list Subject: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions Hello, I am looking for opinions about laptop brands. Why? 2. What brand would you totally avoid? Why?? 3. Since I use Jaws, would it be better to purchase a system off the shelf or have one custom built? I have had them custom built before because I didn't want all of the games and extra unaccessible programs taking up space. These will do for a start. The link takes you to a forum post. If you read it you will find this. http://meggamusic.co.uk/winamp/Winamp_Download.htm There you will be able to get the last build. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
I will start by saying it isn't really an option to "customize" a laptop. They're not nearly as easy to swap boards in and out as you can with a desktop. If you don't want to screw around with getting rid of all the unwanted software and games that come on most commercial laptops, you can look on the Microsoft site for I think they call them certified or something. Another option is to find a listing on sites like Ebay that advertise a clean install of Windows 10 with no other bloatware. At one time, I would say avoid Acers, they used to have more hardware issues andd their support wasn't very good. That may have changed lately. Personally, I have used HP for my last few leptops. The main thing with a laptop is to get some hands-on experience with it. Unlike desktops, their keyboard layout and feel can vary quite a bit between different brands or models. - Original Message - From: "Tammy Freitag"To: "jaws-users-list" Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2017 3:41 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions Hello, I am looking for opinions about laptop brands. Hello there. I am using Windows 10, and Winamp works fairly well, though I had some struggles at first. What problems are you having? You can probably edit id3 tags with VlC, but I have never tried this. Nevertheless, VLC is a very functional programme that can do almost anything you can think of in this area, so if you really can't get winamp working, I would do some research, play around with it etc. I only use VLC for videos myself but it's by far the most stable and reliable video player out there. Some swear by its audio features too, though. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Holger Fiallo Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2017 10:38 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Editing MP3 files Are you using w10? [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
Hello, I am looking for opinions about laptop brands. I know there isn't one perfect answer to this but I do value the opinions and experiences of others. I want to purchase a Windows 10 laptop. Here are my questions; 1. Which brand would you recommend? Why? 2. What brand would you totally avoid? Why?? 3. Since I use Jaws, would it be better to purchase a system off the shelf or have one custom built? I have had them custom built before because I didn't want all of the games and extra unaccessible programs taking up space. These will do for a start. Thanks for your input! -- Independence is yours . Are you willing to reach for it? Tammy For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
