Re: [JAWS-Users] unable to add to cart
I'm speculating that in the case where you cannot press the "Add to Cart Button" there is some other element (checkbox, combo box, editable combo box, edit field) that needs to be used/selected before the button will activate. For a simple example, if the quantity edit field is blank, then a number needs first to be entered. In other cases, I've seen where a size or a color choice must first be selected before the button can be activated. There are so many variables in a simple shopping app that is dependent on the item itself, that it's hard to pin down a specific problem related to JAWS. Re: [JAWS-Users] installing an old version of jaws
Caution: If installing JAWS 15 or older when JAWS 16 or newer already installed, will result in some problems. Usually requires removing the new versions, install the old one, and then reinstall the new ones. There was a significant shift in the paradigm of how JAWS interacts, around the time of JAWS 16 inception. Consult with Freedom Scientific. There are exceptions to this rule and certain pieces of software are assigned a permanent top priority. I imagine that the Windows operating system might have that kind of assignment. 3. According to our A. T. department, reassignment involves the division of RAM into smaller compartments which then handle this function. The entire process scares the heck out of me. I'm still having the vexing and annoying issue of the latest issue of JAWS periodically changing how it reads Outlook messages (windows-7, Outlook 2010). JAWS will be doing a great job of reading a message, then, for no apparent reason, when I bring up the next message, read all kinds of info: "Table 1, row 1, nesting level 3." etc. I have to close Outlook and, sometimes, JAWS and bring them back for JAWS and Outlook to function normally again. Yes. Only solution I've found is to do a JAWS+Windows+F4 restart. Something in JAWS is getting confused, cluttered, or forgetful. I went and obtained a fresh copy and removed Jaws, 2018, older version, from the Control panel. Installed, this latest up-date, the complete Jaws 2018 package. Which said was successful. Then I always do a repair in-case something left out. In doing so, found at 71/72% it would say error and a couple of things not found or installed correctly. So, called and talked to Tech Support VFO, Dane, in California, and he could not install either. Even with a fresh copy. So, his recommendation was to completely uninstall all components of Jaws 2018. I kept settings. FS Reader and Jaws and all the rest, bye-bye. Restart the computer, Install, then the repair and bingo. I am back running. Those that have posted about what is not working, might this be a issue. Being what I had? Geno, Portland, ME. Even when I was logged in on the main page, I was asked to log in again when I pressed enter on the Your Account Link. It needs to know who we are to know what account info to access. Smile. We used to have three site options for Amazon: The main site, a really simplified site and one in-between. On this middle one, there was a link at the bottom to let you return to the main site. Those choices seem to have been taken away now. I think it's patronizing to automatically be sent to a site for screen readers, if that's what's happening. There are those who prefer the supposedly more accessible sites, but others not. And we as users should be in control of which to use. Smile. Re: [JAWS-Users] pdf to excel conversion
If you're trying to get a table in a PDF document to import into Excel, it's never been an easy nor automatic process. My approach is to first convert the PDF file to text and do some cleanup before importing into MS Word. Then use the Word Text to Table conversion to do the formatting. Then copy that table and paste into a blank Excel worksheet. Lots of steps, but it gives you the opportunity to clean up the data and nesting levels. If JAWS doesn't come up talking at the Logon screen, there is a problem with JAWS. I just did a test where I booted my computer a number of times. Every time I did, one of 2 things happened. A few times, the only thing I heard was "unavailable". A few times, I heard absolutely nothing, in which cases, I didn't know if I was at the logon screen yet. Each time, I hit Insert+T to hear the window title and each time it said "Title equals". A number of times, I hit Spacebar and it took me to the password field every time. I tried hitting Shift+F8 one time and it did the same thing. This is better than what I've been doing to get around the problem. Thanks for the tip. The FS Support people I've spoken to think that this is not a very widespread problem. My Outlook (and lots of other programs) started slowing down dramatically yesterday. I have JAWS 2018 and Windows 7 32-bit Pro on a Dell Latitude. I checked on system restore and saw that a Windows "critical update" was installed the day before. I restored back to before that point (and it took several hours) and now the system is clicking along beautifully. I've set my Windows update to *not* update automatically and to ask me in advance which to download and install. I'm hoping that I can somehow avoid getting that nasty "critical update" installed in the future. Re: [JAWS-Users] Serious Problem Since Doing Latest Jaws 2018 Update
Tom, Unless you've tried it already, I'd complete uninstall JAWS 2018 to get back to an earlier version and determine that you've solved the problem. Then install an earlier version (you do keep all the files, don't you?) of JAWS 2018 and avoid the latest build. I have developed a serious problem since doing the latest 2018 Jaws update on this Windows 7 laptop. In fact, it actually is very difficult to type this e-mail. Since the update, my computer has basically slowed down to a crawl. It's hard to type anything, because there is a several-second delay between hitting a key, and getting a response from Jaws.I also have a great deal of Static in my computer speakers, which I never had before. Finally, I find that I often have to restore focus with Jaws when doing a particular task. I even went back to an earlier version of Jaws, and the problems persisted. I called Freedom Scientific Tech support, and we re-installed the latest Jaws update. The problem still persisted. I even did a Jaws repair with no luck. Needless to say, I'm not very happy!! Has anyone had these problems with the latest update, and if so, what did you do to address them? This computer is a Dell business-grade computer, and I've never experienced problems like this before from the many Jaws updates I have done over the years. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to call Freedom Scientific again in the morning if I have no luck between now and then. Freedom Scientific says that this doesn't affect muting of the synthesizer with INSERT+SPACEBAR, S, but what if you only use Braille and, even when you work with no speech or have speech muted temporarily, you want to mute also other computer sounds? I think it would be better if this would be a setting in the Basic Settings dialog box and JAWS Startup Wizard instead of a mandatory action from witting any call to the RefreshScreen script. A good analogy is priority boarding at airports where those booked the first class cabin are boarded before others. In operating system design and architecture, a process may contain multiple threads. Here, a process refers to a container of program code, data needed by a program, resources being used, as well as other state information an operating system uses to keep track of things such as if the process is ready to run, ready to die, and other information. One of the information tracked by operating systems (more specifically, operating system kernels) is how many threads are inside a given process and what priority levels they are assigned to, and each process requires at least one thread to run. On Windows (more specifically, Windows NT), a process may contain more than one thread, especially if they are GUI applications such as JAWS (jfw.exe), with each thread responsible for running either the main code, hold a window ready for user interaction, spawn by other threads and what not. As for increasing thread priority and resulting responsiveness, I doubt that would solve the overall problem. Although it'll let Windows allocate more running time to threads inside JAWS process, it is a partial solution. In order for a screen reader to stay responsive, it must make sure it gets whatever it needs from apps on time, otherwise it'll get stuck trying to obtain useful data for you. This is more so if there are many threads competing for processor resources (because processor time is a precious resource when looking inside silicon), hence possibly contributing to slower responsiveness, not the other way around as an idealist would say. And no, it isn't just JAWS that gets stuck - the program you are using may appear to slow down, as well as other actors such as accessibility API bridge libraries, other tasks and what not, hence my thinking that increasing thread priority for JAWS isn't a good solution that'll work in the long term. As for JAWS becoming less responsive as time goes on: there might be numerous contributing factors. One possible factor is possible memory leak or lax resource accountability in one or more threads. If JAWS keeps eating something but fails to release things it no longer needs, it may lead to slower responsiveness. One way to look at it is memory usage for jfw.exe - if you use JAWS for hours and it appears memory usage by the screen reader process keeps increasing, chances are that there's a more serious resource management problem in screen reader code, especially in one or more modules responsible for keeping track of various info such as accessibility state, display handling and what not. Also, when it comes to accessibility API handling, not all API's offer ways to make screen readers (or clients) stay responsive - one good example is UIA and resource starvation problem observed not only by JAWS users on Windows 10, but also by users of another screen reader, usually caused by one thread trying to handle a flood of accessibility events or the API bridge (in this case, UIAutomationCore.dll) getting stuck somehow. So what is a solution to this problem? We don't know yet, as it may involve collaborative effort between Microsoft, VFO, app vendors and users. If anyone is curious about how UIA internally works or have questions about UIA and resource starvation problem, or want more explanation regarding accessibility API's (complete with source code), write to me offlist. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs
Steve, Might be, but as you say, 4 G of RAM is pretty massive. I agree that coding is more likely the issue, since the real slowdown problems happened after JAWS 16, when they changed "under the hood" operation. I still think JAWS is subject to memory crowding either because of itself, or because it is using memory areas that it did not use in the past. Most of my complaint have been due to JAWS getting less responsive the longer it runs. After a clean restart, it seems to get more responsive again, until it starts to slow later. I'll let folks know if I am more satisfied with jfw.exe set to high priority. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs
John, Interesting...One thing I can do (and have just done) is to increase the priority of the JFW process. I'm going to try running my system this way for a while to see if anything improves. My system is a Dell laptop with Windows 7 Pro 32-bit, dual core processor. I'm running the latest build of JAWS 2018. What I did was to launch the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Escape) and Ctrl+Tab to the processes list. I arrowed down to jfw.exe and opened the context menu. From there I selected the "set priority" menu and right-arrow to open. JFW was set to run as normal, and I've changed it to high, waited a bit, and then selected the set priority button after the cautionary warning. Close Windows Task Manager with Escape. Now let's see if JAWS behaves better with this setting. If it does, I'd sure like to know how to have it permanently set to high priority, as I suspect it will default to normal after a restart. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs
This is because JAWS will now (since version 17) automatically shut down when there is a "not responding" issue with a particular program. I see this most often when switching into or out of Adobe Acrobat. JAWS does not seem to play well with that program on my system, and I often have to wait that 20 or 30 seconds for JAWS to start up again. Does your employee hear the "JAWS Home Edition" or "JAWS Professional Edition" after the long delay -- then it is indeed JAWS restarting after such a shutdown. In the Shared Settings folder there is a default.jcf file that you can edit with notepad. On my system it is located: C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018\Settings\enu\Default.JCF Near the end of this file is a section titled [AutoRestart] where you can disable this "feature" or extend the time before JAWS shuts down and restarts. A following section also lets you decide how long to delay for specific applications. See if disabling or changing the delay times helps. Be sure only to edit this file in a simple editor like Notepad to avoid inserting other ASCII characters. Re: [JAWS-Users] Putting JAWS - All About Context
Innamuddin, The English word "putting" can be both a description of placing something on something else, or tapping a golf ball into a hole. They are pronounced differently. I have heard JAWS pronounce it both ways, depending on the context. I am putting my shoes on. In golf, she is good at putting. So it appears that when the word is at the end of a sentence, it is pronounced as in golf. I think the mispronunciation in the subject line is because the word is followed by a fully-capitalized word, and it is being treated as preceding a new phrase. Re: [JAWS-Users] CNN back on ResearchIt
Most likely no one fixed anything. If CNN's underlying web page format had changed significantly, ResearchIt could easily stop working. For example, whenever Google decides to put up a special web page to celebrate some special anniversary, they often make things a mess for screen readers. Since those Google events only last one day, we are back to normal in a short while. Your experience with CNN in such a short time suggests that CNN had simply changed their web page format (or had their own internal web problems) and later settled back to a format that ResearchIt could use. But nice, nonetheless.
