Re: [JAWS-Users] what's the name of the program that shrinks microsoft word docks to 1 page?

2012-03-18 Thread Dean Martineau
This isn't a program, and it doesn't reduce a document to one page, but
rather by one page. It is a function of Word itself. Here is what I sent
to the list along with preceding dialog:

--begin excerpt from web pate:
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/shrink-page-2010-a-t3948039.html
Is there still a shrink 1 page option in 2010 Word? If so, where?

Yes, it's available in the Customize Quick Access Toolbar and
Customize Ribbon command lists, in the All Commands category.

Is it not still on the toolbar in Print Preview?

Yes, it's there -- but. In Word 2010, there's a non-editable print
preview in the Print tab of the File (a.k.a. Backstage pane), which
has no ribbon/toolbar. In order to get the editable print preview,
which does have a ribbon, you have to add the Print Preview Edit Mode
button to the Quick Access Toolbar or to a custom group on the ribbon.
This is almost completely undiscoverable and is going to need a page
at mvps.org.

--end excerpt from web page

So I looked, and in the Customize Keyboard dialog, under All Commands, there
is a Print Preview Edit command. Once you assign it to a keystroke, and use
that keystroke in a document, you have the old print preview which contains
the One Page button and which you can dismiss with the escape key. Not sure
it's worth doing, but I guess it's nice to know one can do it.

This works in Word 2007 and 2010. Before that, there was a keystroke to
achieve this end. Go into the Save As dialog. Shift+tab once or twice,
depending on your windows version, to the list of files, then press the
application key to bring up a context menu. Arrow to new and press enter or
right arrow, then press enter on folder and name it.

I've had other people say that the shift+insert+v keystroke doesn't work in
JAWS 13 but it does for me, so I don't get it. Anyway, from the JAWS help
system, searching for Personalize in the index, here's what I gleaned:

Personalizing Web Settings
Do the following to create or modify personalized settings for a Web page.
Note that changes made are saved permanently to JSI files (for example,
FreedomScientific.com.jsi) and do not apply to other Web pages. JSI files
are stored in the PersonalizedSettings folder, which can be found by
choosing the Start button, All Programs, JAWS X (where X is the JAWS version
number), Explore JAWS, and then the Explore My Settings folder.

Press INSERT+V to open the Quick Settings dialog box. Focus is in the Search
edit box.
Press DOWN ARROW to move to the Quick Settings tree view.
Press P to move to the Personalize Web Settings group. If necessary, press
RIGHT ARROW to expand the group.
Press DOWN ARROW to move to the different options and groups within
Personalize Web Settings, and press SPACEBAR to make changes.
After making all necessary changes, press TAB to move to the OK button and
then press SPACEBAR to save changes and exit Quick Settings.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Shrink document to one page in Word 2010

2012-03-02 Thread Dean Martineau
You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to this command. The function
attempts to reduce the document to one page fewer than it would ordinarily
occupy. The name of the function in the Customize Keyboard dialog is Tools,
shrink to Fit. You can get to it by pressing alt+f, t, c, alt+t to reach
the Customize Keyboard dialog, then in the list of tabs, choose either the
Print Preview or All Commands tab, with the former being a much shorter
list. Once you have chosen your desired tab, press the TAB key, then press
T and arrow to Tools Shrink to Fit. Tab twice to the Press New Shortcut Key
edit field and press the desired key. Use the JAWS cursor to see if the key
is already assigned to a function you want to preserve. If so, tab twice to
the Assign button and press space to activate. The function has a different
name in the Customize Keyboard dialog than it does in the Customize QAT
dialog, but I suspect both refer to the same function.

Hello Scorpio and Kuenga,

Microsoft removed the button for fitting to one page from the print preview
box for Word 2010. However, the button can still be added to the quick
access toolbar. You can then activate the function by using Alt with the
number representing the position of the button on the QAT. Here is how to
add it:

1. Press Alt+F to activate the file button.
2. Press Alt+T to move to the Word options dialog box.
3. Press the letter Q to move to the customize the quick access toolbar
options.
4. Tab to the choose commands from combo box and press the letter A until
you get to the All commands choice.
5. Tab to the list of commands and press the letter S and then use page
down or arrow keys until you find the shrink one page command. (commands
are listed in alphabetical order).
6. Tab to the Add button and press spacebar.
7. Tab to the list box of commands that are on the quick access toolbar and
find out the position of the command in the list. Alt with the number
representing the position of the command will activate the command. If it
is the second one in the list then Alt+2 can be used to activate it in a
document.
8. You can also tab to buttons to use for moving the command up or down in
the list.
9. Tab to the OK button and press spacebar.

Remember that other attributes are affected somewhat when shrinking to fit
text on one page.

Take care.

Hi Folks,

I can't remember if I've asked this before, but thought I would bring it up
again in case someone has come along and knows how to do it.

Back in Word 2003, within the Print Preview window, there used to be a
toolbar button that would take various elements of a document like font,
line spacing, margin width and length and various other properties, and
alter them, upon command, of course, to bring everything to one page.

So, for example, if I had a document, let's say for argument's sake, this is
a formal letter to someone that is about so many words in length, and the
letter would take up only one page, if not for the signature line at the
bottom which seems to be showing up on the second page, which is not
professional in the least.

So, one would go into the file menu, enter on print preview, and, in the
resulting window, one would press the alt key to activate the menu bar, then
control+tab to get to the toolbar whereby you could move to the right
control+and
enter on the button which had an image of multiple pages with an curved
arrow pointing to one page on the right side of the button.

I found this button to be a Godsend, especially where I was writing quick
format letters that would invariably creep onto the second page with my name
at the bottom.

Let me remind list members that for those graphical PDF documents, you can
easily e-mail them as an attachment to conv...@robobraille.org. You will
get back a text attachment of the document in readable form. If you send
 to
that address and put doc in the subject line, the attached document will
 be
in word format. You can also unload the PdF to www.robobraille.org and
 have
 it converted that way.

Hello,

I am using JAWS 13 and QuickBooks Premier - Accountants Edition 2011. Some
of the features in QuickBooks aren't fully accessible with JAWS.

For example, it doesn't identify some of the edit boxes. When you are doing
a bank reconciliation, it doesn't tell you if your two balances (book
balance and bank balance) are equal or not. When you preview a report, it
just says blank.

What JAWS script will make QuickBooks more accessible with JAWS? Please let
me know as soon as you can. I will greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Tim, to clarify: are you saying that some programs are accessible to JAWS,
i.e., speak better, using a high-end graphics card, or that you, as a person

system that it lacks on the other one assuming no vision?

Ok, you want a difference. How about the flash up dater. Just about
everybody on this list has problems seeing that window with jaws.
I would also bet that most have the standard min in graphics that was
offered with computer.
Well I see that window and no problem on the update.
Also got 2 xp pro boxes with the same except one has cheap ATI and the other
has GForce gamer card. The high end box sees my local weather ap.
Only on a 64bit op with 4gig or better ram. Would I say it might not matter
with on board graphics. But with prices now it really ain't that much. You
don't get into real money cards until you run dual video cards.

At 05:23 PM 2/16/2012, you wrote:
Tim,

Respectfully, I think funds are better spent in other areas. I have
done computer tech work for years, run Jaws on lots of different
configurations, and except for certain video conflicts back several
years ago, I really don't see any performance differences with high-end
video cards vs. shared video on the motherboard, as long as there is
enough system memory to share.

I guess the only way I'd change my opinion is to see a comparison of
the same OS where a high-end video card could do certain things that
couldn't be done with shared graphics, all other things being equal.
So, I don't really see the point of spending an extra $150 on a
high-end video card just for Jaws.

The better the graphics the more jaws can see.
I built computers just for speech thinking it had to be for text.
However, the op is very graphical. So the more you make it run better
the better your jaws will like it.

At 01:33 PM 2/16/2012, you wrote:
Jeez, people don't even think before they write.

What good is power graphics going to do? She's not a gamer, and a
better graphics card will make no difference in transcription.

As far as my 2 cents:

Go for a fast processor, it doesn't have to be a quad-core but it
should be dual-core. The processing and front-side bus speed should
be fast, and get as much memory as you can, 4GB preferrably 8GB
although you really don't need more than that. If you go above 4GB,
you will by definition be getting a 64-bit system.

Frankly, I would opt for a desktop because of the additional ports
and possibility to expand it easier. One thought: I don't know what
hardware the transcription service might supply, but you probably
want to get an extra soundcard so you can keep the transcription on
your headset and Jaws in another channel.

Hi everyone:

I'm starting a new medical transcription job and finding myself in
need of a new computer. I will be running a transcription platform,
which handles downloading and playing of audio plus the word
processing part of transcription of that same audio. The minimum
requirements are for a core 2 duo processor with 3 gigs of ram 32
bit, or 4 gigs with 64 bit. I realize running jaws ups these
requirements somewhat if I don't want to have lags and sluggishness.

Can I get any suggestions for just how much processor speed and ram
I should spring for? Should I just go all out and get as much power
and memory as I can afford? Is anybody using JAWS with a solid
state drive, and what's the performance there like? Any
configurations I should avoid? Should I go desktop or laptop?

I have JAWS 13 and will be using the Windows 7 home version.

Thanks in advance and thanks for having me on the list.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 13 sleep mode

If you are using JAWS 13, sleep mode is found in the settings center under
the miscellaneous options. From within your game, press insert+6. I don't
know whether your game is on the web or is a separate application. If it is
a separate application, JAWS will invite you to create a configuration for
it, and you want to do so. Once you say yes, go into settings center,
either search for sleep or tab to the list of options and press m for
miscellaneous, right arrow, down arrow or s for sleep mode, space to toggle.
If on the other hand this is just a web-based game of some sort, you can put
jaws to sleep temporarily but you'll have to work out how to wake it up
later.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Kendal reader?

2012-02-07 Thread Dean Martineau
The Kindle for PC program voices whatever it voices with its own voice. It
does not rely on screen reader access. With that program, some reading is
possible.

As amy Mason pointed out in the January, 2012 Braille Monitor: The Amazon
Kindle for PC provides a slightly better experience in so far as it is
possible to go forward and backward in a book, read continuously or
by page, and read sentences. Amazon has chosen to allow JAWS and NVDA users
to navigate menus with the screen reader, but it has implemented its own
commands and voice to read the actual text on the screen, meaning that
there is no Braille support for the experience, and users are unable to
read in
smaller increments than by sentence. Thus, although some rudimentary access
to Kindle books is available, it is not nearly enough to use the books for
anything but the most casual reading.
For the best summary on this topic, read that article:

Re: [JAWS-Users] graphics question with Internet Explorer

2012-02-07 Thread Dean Martineau
Sharon, you may gain a lot of running a demo of JAWS 13 and trying
the page. Sometimes the upgrades can enhance Internet Explorer
functionality with different pages. Even if you don't plan to upgrade, you
could run the demo and still get a little use of the latest version.

It seems like you're doing the right thing with regards to setting graphics
mode to All, so I don't know why the setting isn't holding. While on the
site, press shift+insert+v, then press G until you reach the graphics
options; space until you hear All, then press enter. That way, whatever the
setting is in the configuration manager, it will be personalized for this
page.

More controvertially, you might want to try the page with www.satogo.com. I
find several pages where I need to use System Access to read them fully,
though I'm going to experiment, now that this has come up, to see if having
all graphics spoken solves any of those problems.

setting from tagged graphics to show all graphics.
I think it is the configuration manager that I need to set it for all my

it was already set to show all graphics. I did the save on that screen

tagged only.
I am beginning to think I should just go back to IE 8 although I was really
excited when I actually got a Doctor Oz video to play the other day and then
got one to play this morning. But I can't replicate what I did except that
the link to start the video is a long string of letters and such that only
shows up once in a while. I have spent hours and hours trying to figure out
exact steps to play the videos. Very frustrating as I am really a Doctor Oz

I also need more graphics to show up on my Facebook page and on some other

So how do I make I E 9 remember to show all graphics and not tagged

OK, on the page you reach from www.robobraille.org:

1. Press h twice to get to the second heading on the page, Step 1 - Upload
the file. The line below lists the possible file types. Press b from here
to the Browse button and actigate it to be able to navigate to the location
of the file you want to send for conversion.

2. Activate the Upload button. After a moment, a message informing you
that the file was successfully uploaded will appear below that button, and a
heading will appear below that asking you what type of conversion you want.
Of the four radio buttons, choose Document conversion for this example. Of
course, the others are all viable options gtoo.

3. Once a radio button is chosen, two more headings appear below them.
Note that upon choosing the radio button you want, you may be bounced to the
edit field for entering your e-mail address, and you will have to move up to
the options heading. If you chose Document Conversion, the Step 3 - Specify
document conversion options section contains a combo box listing the ten
possible output formats. If you chose an MP3, you would choose the language
and desired speed.

4. Finally, in the Step 4 - Enter email address and submit request section,
follow those instructions.

As Ann stated, all this can be done via e-mail. Send the document to
conv...@robobraille.org and in the subject line put the desired format, loke
doc or txt or epub.

Indeed, one of its greater values is that it does OCR on the image pdf´s.

I actually recommend sending the document to conv...@robobraille.org.
You'll get it back in a few minutes as a textfile attachment. You can
put codes in the subject line to specify a different return file
format.
Alternatively, you can upload the file to www.robobraille.org and
specify the desired file format in the form.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Reading Whole .PDF Document and Convenient OCR
 Feature

 Hi, All:

Someone attached an important .PDF document in an e-mail that Adobe
Reader gave me the infamous empty document message when I opened it
and it was processed. I'm running JAWS 13 and tried the new
Convenient OCR feature for the first time in an effort to get
 something usable out of it.
 Adobe
said it is a two page document. I pressed Control plus 1 as
instructed by the JAWS What's New and Insert-Space, o, w, but JAWS is
only reading about the first lines. Could some kind person please
tell me how I can get to hear the whole document? I'm running Adobe
Reader X on a 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 Thank you,

 Margaret

Try opening the document in Adobe Reader, even though there is no text, then
print, and select the Freedom Import printer. That will launch OpenBook for
recognition of the document.

Thanks for what would be a great idea, but it is from my attorney and is
private, so I don't want to send it to a service or for anyone to open for
me. I do have Open Book 9, but my efforts to open it with OB haven't
worked. I don't know if I have messed up my file associations or something,
but I get the following error message:

File C:\Program Files (x86)\Freedom
Scientific\OpenBook\9.0\Users\default\Library\(the name of the file).pdf
does not exist.

The file is definitely in documents under libraries.

I launch OB. Press alt-F/ Press enter on open. Paste in the name of the
file . Tab over to the combo box for look in. Get to libraries and press
enter on open. I can't get it to go below libraries.

I've spent hours on this and am getting very frustrated. I'm still not good
with Win 7 and only use Open Book when I have a .pdf file to deal with.

Could someone give the instructions to get Open Book to open the .pdf?

Any help would be very appreciated.

Margaret

Re: [JAWS-Users] frames

2012-02-06 Thread Dean Martineau
Navigate from frame to frame using m, but chances are you can use other
quick keys to get to what you need. There may be a link to add a payee, for
instance. Then your payees may be marked by checkboxes, or edit fields.
Each has its own quick key.

I should probably know the answer to this but perhaps someone can give me a
quick bit of help. I have a new checking account with a local credit union
and although I've never attempted banking on line before, I thought I'd see
if it is possible to do it with this friendly bank. Aside from my own
issues, I'm not sure that their website is all that accessible because I had
to get telephone help from them with getting registered so that I can log
in. Now I see that paying checks on line is in a frame. So I need to know
how to get into the frame to see what is involved and then leave the frame
when I'm done. Can anyone make a suggestion about getting in and out of the
frame?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Edsharp question

2012-02-05 Thread Dean Martineau
Hello, all. Based on when I subscribed today, I might have been subscriber
#600, or 598, or something.

I love edSharp, but that particular feature never works for me. I would
love to use it when converting tidbits to html (see below,) but I can't, so
instead, I use Notetab Lite, www.notetab.com, also free, for the html
conversion process. It is another powerful text editor, in many ways as
good as edSharp.

Jamal does eventually respond to support requests and sometimes acts on
them.
