[JAWS-Users] here is how I repair jaws, and it works all the time, and I don't have to do much.

2017-02-17 Thread jim rawls
1. When you download a jaws update, download it from the web site.
Don't let it install automatically.

2. When the executable is downloaded and you know where it is,
highlight the executable.

3. Now hit enter on the exe.

4. Jaws should now ask you if you want to modify, repair, or uninstall
jaws.

5. Choose repair and follow the prompts jaws gives you and it's easy
peasy. Take it from me, because I am not a computer whiz.

Two possibilities come to mind. First, the most-often-given advice on this
list: Is MS word running maximized? The quick way both to find out and fix
is to go to the MS Word icon on your desktop (assuming you have one), press
alt-enter for properties, then tab until you hear the window size. It should
say "maximized." If not, arrow up or down for that option, then tab to Okay.
(I can't remember if an Apply button comes up.)

Second, since the problem is erratic, I wonder if there's something in your
document's format that causes JAWS to stop and start over. I'm assuming this
problem comes up when you're in "say all." The next time this happens, stop
JAWS with the control key and see if you can discern anything unusual, such
as a code or format change, in that sentence.

Well, there's a third possibility, which is that you might need more RAM.
But with any luck, this isn't the answer.

rules in outlook 2010.

Creating Message/filter rules in outlook,
I believe these steps will work in outlook 2010,2013,2016.

1, open outlook.

2, you first need to create the folder in which you want to filter the
messages too.
Ctrl+shift+e=create new folder,
So here in the edit field type the preferred folder name.
Now tab twice, you're being asked where you want the folder, you most likely
want it on the first level with all the other outlook folders,
So press the home key,
You should here,
Your name/email, and level zero, now tab enter ok button, the folder has
been created.

Now we need to setup the message/filter.

>From the inbox, find a message in which you wish to send to the newly
created folder,
Press the applications key, you can either press the up/down arrow until you
hear,
Rules sub-menu,
Now you can press enter,
Up arrow enter on, create new rule.
If you wish to use shortcut keys,
1, press applications key,
Press the letter's s/u
Now let's assume you're creating a message filter for jaws-users-list,
Once you've chosen the way you get into the rule creation,
You will land on,
>From JAWS-Users-List
This box is unchecked, press the spacebar to check,
Now tab until you hear;
Sent to jaws-users-list
This box is unchecked, press the spacebar to check.
Now you need to tab until you hear;
Move the item to folder:
Note, this box is unchecked, so spacebar to check,
If it's your first folder, you will automatically be placed into the list of
folders,
If not, you will need to tab and enter on,
Select Folder...
Now that you're in a list of folders, press the letter j=jaws-users-list, or
whatever the list name is,
Now you need to tab and enter on ok.
Note, the rule isn't quite finished yet,
Now tab to the advance options button, press enter.
Now you have four steps you need to apply,
The first step is,
Select conditions,
This screen can be excepted as is, so just tab to next and press enter.
The next screen is,
Select actions, again this screen is fine, so, just go to the next button
and press enter.
The third screen is,
Are there any exceptions,
Again, here the screen is fine, just tab to next press enter.
Finally we arrive at the last screen,
Finish rule setup,
You will need to, tab and check the box that reads,
Run this rule now on messages already in "Jaws-Users"
Again, this will depend on the folder/name/filter,
Again tab and, make sure that,
Turn on this rule is checked,
Now tab and press enter on finish, the rule will be applied to the messages
currently in the inbox, and from now on, all messages with the criteria you
chose,
Will be placed into the folder.

Hope this helps.

Jim,
Whatever version of jaws you are using,
Download latest Jaws to your down load folder that you are using, Delete out
J 17 out of your pc, but keep the files only.
Start your narrator and go to your download folder and re-install Jaws
17again.
For some reason the anniversary and jaws works great, after this.
Then, reset jaws quick key command and reset the jaws option menu.

How do I get total recorder to not record jaws commands as I record? I have
unchecked virtual mode kernel driver, etc., and it still does it. I have
total recorder 8.6, and am running a W10 computer with jaws 18 beta. In the
advanced window of total recorder, there are two references to the kernel
driver, so which one should I uncheck? Jims

Hi,
That is another command to silence jaws, or, if you have a mute key on your
laptop, you can mute and un-mute.
Some people will lower the volume to zero.

Whatever works for you... Jorge

Jim,
The below worked when I was using 2013 and it worked well; but I believe it
will work for you in 2010, give it a try.
George

Adding a New Contact Group (Formerly Distribution List)
Adding a contact group is very similar to adding a new contact. Here's how
to do that if you would like to try it.
1. From the main Outlook 2013 window, press CTRL+SHIFT+B to open the Address
Book.
2. Press ALT + Foxtrot to go to the File menu, and then choose New Entry.
The New Entry dialog box appears.
3. Choose New Contact Group in the list view and press ENTER. An untitled
Contact Group appears with focus in the Name edit box.
---
4. Type in a name for the contact group.
5. On the ribbon, go to the Members group and choose the Add Members button.
You can press TAB to move to it and press ENTER on it. A menu appears with
the following choices:
o From Outlook Contacts
o From Address Book
o New E-mail Contact
6. Choose From Address Book and press ENTER. The Select Members Global
Address list opens.
7. Make sure to choose the Search radio button for Name Only, not More
Columns.
---
8. Press TAB to move to the search edit box and begin typing someone's
name you are looking for. The list view below scrolls to match what you
type.
9. Press TAB to move to the extended list box and use ARROW KEYS up or
down to select the person.
10. Press ENTER to add that person to the group of members. Focus
returns to the search edit box.
11. Repeat steps 8 through 10 to select other members.
12. To complete the process, press TAB to move to the OK button, and
then press ENTER. Focus returns to the Contact Group dialog box, which now
should have the name you gave it.
13. Press ESC to close it. You are asked if you want to save the
changes, answer Yes. The new contact group is saved and focus returns to the
Address Book.
14. Press ESC to close the Address Book.

NO, I definitely meant Alt-f, not Alt-F4. The keystroke Alt-F forcibly
closes any programs that remain open after a computer has exited Windows.
Alt-F4 closes individual programs only when the computer is logged into
Windows.

Your computer may not have necessarily entered sleep mode when you tried to
shut it down normally. Sometimes, as I have discovered on my Windows 7
desktop, when you shut down your computer, it will exit Window, but the
power will not shut off. And because there is no sound coming through the
speakers after the computer has exited Windows, you may think that it has
shut down completely when in fact, the power is still on. This can happen
occasionally when an open program prevents the computer from completing the
normal shut down process. The only way to know for sure that your computer
has shut down normally is to wait a minute or two after you have initiated a
normal shut down, and if you can still hear or feel the internal cooling fan
running, or if the tray for the DVD drive still opens and closes when you
press the eject button, then the power is still on. If this is the case,
try pressing Alt-F which will usually force any open programs to close so
that the power can shut off. Of course, there will be no keyboard echo
because there is no sound. If this doesn't work, then you need to press and
hold the power button on the front panel to force the computer to completely
shut down. It should not be necessary to unplug it.

but when I turned the monitor and the speakers it was just a blank

hello;

try the following;

1, ctrl+shift+l= create distribution list;

2, now type in the name of the distribution list;

3, tab once, you will hear the name of the list, press enter,

4, to add a contact press, alt+h+t
now tab to the list of contacts,
arrow and choose a contact you wish to add to the distribution list, now tab
and enter on, members button, the client will be added.

another way is,

1, create the list,
ctrl+shift+l,
type in the name of the distribution list, press the escape key, and say yes
to changes, so now the distribution list is created,

now, ctrl+shift+b=addressbook,
you land into a search edit,
so type in the name of the distribution list, tab once, you should see the
name, press enter, now press,
alt+h+t=add members
tab to the contacts list,
arrow to select a contact,
now tab enter on members button, contact will be added, tab ok press enter.

hope this helps.

Just in case you need some reminders of upgrading to windows 10.
*Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16 or 17.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade
Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your download folder.
Download jaws 16.0.4350, leave it in your download folder for future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On this web page, Go to download link now 64 bit version or 32 bit version
depending on what system you have.
Download the tool and save it to your download folder for future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this gives you a
verification email.
Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure you have all
the latest updates.
Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws fragmented files
and so on from your system.
Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.
Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to
complete.
After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on talking on the
desktop.
very important, uninstall jaws.
Keep shared settings and personal settings.
Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on talking with
all your settings, except for 2 of them.
Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.

Hi Jaws Users group.
If you are using a Microsoft account to sign into your w-10 computer, you
must verify your account!
You will need sited help or you need to call the M S Support line at:
Microsoft Free Computer Repair Number. 1 800 936 – 5900 How to check your
system to see if you need to verify.
Windows key+I, for settings.
Right arrow to, Account, press enter.
Tab one time and listen, tab a second time, if you need to verify, this will
say, verify link.
Press enter on this link, will bring up a empty container window that Jaws
can not read.
I was able to use the touch cursor successfully on my desktop, and had
Microsoft send me a text code to my cell phone.
Which I entered into my desktop correctly and verified my computer with my
Microsoft account.
However, we did not verify our laptop yet.
So, this morning when it came on, my wife could not access her email.
The reason why, was that Microsoft turned our anti-virus off, and under
security, there was that same verify link.
so, if you do not verify shortly after installing w-10, if you use a
Microsoft account, this same thing will happen to you.
I am not able to verify our laptop.
After spending 1 and a half hours with Microsoft, they were not able to
verify it either.
So, waiting on a phone call, I did let them know that this verify screen is
not accessible at all.
So, why I am waiting, I am still trying to use the Jaws touch cursor to
verify our laptop.
Final thoughts, if you have sited help, use them to verify your Microsoft
account, if not one of these days your anti-virus, will be turned off by
Microsoft to remind you to verify your account.
I personally, do not like this procedure, but Microsoft says, its for
security purposes.
Those of you, who, do not have sited help, call the above support number.
If you are using a Microsoft account to sign-in, this verification is
required, no way around it.
Good luck...

When I was with SBC, I had the same dropping issue. However, it seems
that with Charter Communications, the problem is no more. However, as
I've only listened to one archived game, this might not be completely

Hi Carolyn,

I do believe that half of your statement is true, though I'm not sure if you
should quote me on that.

The Defragmentation service is true, as Windows 10 keeps your hard drive
defragged constantly so as to maximize the storage space and it's
information retrieval.

In terms of the Disk clean up, I don't believe this has been automated in
Windows 10, but as of Windows 8.1, disk clean up is still a manual task,
though, I suppose that you can automate it by setting it as a scheduled task
once a week, or so, but again, you can always set Internet Explorer to empty
temporary internet files automatically once you finish browsing. That has
always been in the Internet Explorer settings, but in terms of emptying out
your recycle bin, or cleaning up dump files and/or log files, those you must
do manually, since the computer can never know which ones you want to delete
and which ones you don't.

Like I said above though, I may be incorrect in this statement, to please
take it with a grain of salt, as I am not officially using Windows 10 yet,
as it has not been reported ready for my computer.

Good luck.

Hi Dave,

There actually used to be a cheat sheet located in the advanced tab of the
system properties in Windows XP, but alas, they've done away with it, and I
don't know where to obtain it anymore.

This command was part of the list of commands that included the IP release
and renew commands for your internet, the check disk and disk defrag and
other useful utilities that were, and still are, as you can see, useful back
in the day.

In any case, perhaps someone with an XP computer can pull up the system
properties with Windows key+pause, then control Tab to the advanced tab, or,
at least, that's what I think it was called, and copy those commands down
for us.

Unfortunately, all of my computers are Windows 7 and up. LOL.

Hi, You can press Windows key+R to get the run dialog box, then, in the run
edit field, type in control userpasswords2, without the quotes, and press
enter.

In the resulting dialog box, uncheck the box that says, users must type a
password to use this computer, and make sure it's unchecked.

Tab to the ok button, and press enter or the spacebar.

You'll receive a dialog box prompting you to select the default user and to
enter the password associated with that user.

Once you select and type in the default username and password, tab to the ok
button, and press the spacebar.

At this point, you can close the userpasswords2 dialog box, if it's still
open, or unless you want to make more advanced modifications in one of the
other tabs, and from that point onwards, it should boot directly into the
desktop.

Keep in mind that if you have User Control turned on, it will prompt you to
press the yes button if you want to allow the action.

Good luck.

Hi all, I am using outlook 2010 on a W8.1 computer with jaws 16. Very often,

Hi all,

I am running W8.1, with jaws 16, and outlook home and business edition 2010.
This means obviously that I have a copy of office home and business on my

at present, in outlook, my contacts are arranged in a business card view. I
would prefer them to be in a phone list configuration, as I had in outlook

Hello Jim,

I don't have the Home and Student version but hopefully the following steps
will also work in your version of Outlook 2010.

1. Go into your contacts list.
2. Use Alt+V to go to the view tab of the ribbon.
3. Tab to the lower part of the ribbon to the Change View submenu and use
spacebar.
4. Use right or left arrow key and you should find a people grid, business
card grid, card grid, and phone grid. Pressing spacebar on any of those
should make that view active.

Take care.

Hi Jim,
I am leaning towards saying no.
You will know when it's installing, and you should have speech for that, up
to the first re-boot of the computer.
You just wait awhile, the computer may reboot several times, and then when
it has settled down, the install can be finished using Narrator.
If I were you, I would wait until some others have gone thru the process and

tested the waters for you. lol
I have already looked at the preview, so I probably will not install Windows

10 for awhile,
maybe not until Jaws 17 has been released and FS has a handle on the new
system.

address book?

hello;
the following will work for 2007,2010,2013,

There are 2 ways to access the outlook contacts.

The first way is,
Ctrl+shift+b=book,
This will land you on an search edit field, So you could type in a contact's
name to search, Or, you could tab once to get into the list of contacts, Now
use your arrow keys, If you would want to send a message to a particular
contact while you're inside the contacts, Just arrow to the contacts
name/email, Now press ctrl+n=new message, Note, the person's information, is
already placed into the to field, thus, you land on the subject, If you tab,
you're placed into the body of the message.
The second way to access you're contacts,
Ctrl+#3 on the numbers row,
You land inside the contacts,
Tab once to the edit field, type a contacts name,
Shift+tab, the name should be their.

Adding contact;

Here's a couple ways you can do this.

The first way, is,

Press ctrl+shift+c
This will place you on a screen where you can add a contact, Use the tab key
to access the criteria, Once you've completed filling in the various fields,
Press escape key, and say yes to save.
The second way is,

1, open a message from the person whom you wish to add/reply to,

2, now shift+tab until you hear;
From: the person's name and email address; Move your left arrow to highlight
the name/email

3, press the applications key,
Up arrow and enter on,
Add to outlook contacts,

Note, your now being placed into a screen with all the information, Name,
email address, Etc.
If your satisfied with the nameemail,
Just press the escape key, your being ask, if you wish to save this
information, just say yes.

Hope this helps.

Hey Jim,

When you are in there changing your settings for the reading pain, there is
a checkbox to apply those settings to all folders. You don't have to go
into each folder. I don't remember exactly where it is. Have a look around
and you should find the checkbox.

 Hello,

Hoping for some direction here as my sighted wife and I have
 this discussion frequently.

Is there a way for a sighted person to see on screen what I
am doing with JAWS? The only time this is important is when
I cannot accomplish something with JAWS and require a pair
of eyes. I will use JAWS to go to where I need help and my
wife has no idea of what I'm doing or where I am with JAWS
when looking at the screen. Is there any way around this? It
makes getting sighted assistance very difficult.

 Best,

any fix for this? I am running Windows 8.1, outlook 2010, and jaws 16. Jim

Of course I mean a standard 3.5 headphone jack.
You plug one end, to the audio, out source of the device which you wish to
record from.
You plug the other end, into the, audio microphone in jack on your computer.
Open total recorder on your computer.
You press play on the device you are recording from first.
You press record, on the total recorder program.
Again, remember, know the length of the recording, because you will not be
able to hear playback while recording this way.
Again, I have done this successfully, and have used iTunes to convert it to
a mp4 file.

An rRCA jack will not fint into a standard 3.5 headphone jack.

If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why? then where does the learning
start?

Hi Jim: if I understand you correctly, try this.
1. Plug an r c a jack, into your victor reader stream headphone out jack.
2. Plug the other end of the r c a jack into the microphone in jack on your
computer.
3. Open total recorder.
4. Press play on your victor reader stream.
5. Press record in the total recorder program.
Try to know the length of the recording before you start, and monitor the
time so you know when to stop the recording, because you wont be able to
hear it while recording this way.
I recorded a thunderstorm, off a micro tape recorder to my computer this
way, the recording turned out fine.
