[JAWS-Users] Questions Regarding migration from XP to Windows 7

2014-04-19 Thread Pedro Romero
Hello everyone.

I am finally going to join the Windows 7 community but have several questions
about converting from XP.

I am considering using Image for Windows to be sure everything gets backed up
but I don't want to restore everything only to find XP has been put back on my
system.

I have many folders within Outlook express and don't want to lose these
e-mails. Will I be able to open them with Windows Live mail?

Also, do I have to reformat my hard drive before putting Windows 7 on it or can
I install it over XP?

Finally, I am currently using Jaws 11. Will this work with Windows 7 or do I
have to upgrade to a higher version of Jaws?

All suggestions are appreciated as I have never done this before without
sighted assistance and I'm just a little nervous about doing this.

Thanks in advance.

You need to back up your data. If you use Windows Easy Transfer, it may
transfer your messages to Windows Live Mail. Problem with that is that
you aren't going to be able to do that if you are upgrading an existing
computer instead of going to a new one. So, you can get the messages over
but you will probably have to create an export file and then import it
into WLM.

You can't upgrade from XP to Windows 7. You need to do a clean
installation, or at least that is the heavily recommended way.

Hello Pete,

If you want to remove all tabs in the document you can use the Find and
Replace dialog box. When you use CTRL+H the Remove tab of the dialog box
is

in focus. In the Find What edit box type ^t (that is a shift with the
number 6 for the caret followed by a lower case t. Tab to the Replace
with
box and if you don't want to replace with anything then keep tabbing but
if

you want to replace the tabs with a space or something else put what you
want in that edit field. You can then tab to either the Replace button or
Replace All button. If you use the replace all choice then all tabs will
be

replaced with whatever was in the Replace With field. If you just use the
Replace button you will go one occurrence at a time. You can use insert
key

with C to read the sentence or line containing the tab this way and if you
don't want to remove the particular tab then just go to the Find Next
button

and find the next occurrence of a tab. .

Take care.

I had a problem one time removing blank lines and a symbol that didn't

Anyways, I ended up doing it the old fashion way.
It's a MS thing, I think...
Try typing in the tab key or 5 spaces, which equals one tab.

It doesn't matterwhether I'm using JAWS 9 or JAWS 13, ribbon navigation

widely despised: there is apparently no rhyme or reason to the way they

That's because I don't think you are doing it correctly.

In ribbons, there is vertical navigation. When you scroll to Mailings,
don't press Enter. Arrow down. You should see two options then
envelopes

and labels.

If you want to address an envelope, select that. If you want to print a
bunch of labels, select that and then go through the options.

If

I don't know about your specific external drive. If it comes up, you
probably don't need to use their software. I am assuming here that you
are talking about a USB external drive.

If you are talking about an external hard disk, you may need to run the
Seagate Disk Wizzard to format the disk so the computer will recognize it.
That shouldn't be necessary with a USB external drive.

Hi there Pete,

Thanks for your offered help.
Tom suggestion really did the trick.
I had to root Jaws to PC and like magic there was the word count.

Hi all.
I just purchased a Seagate external drive on which to back up files

If it helps, I am currently using Jaws 11, and Windows XP.
Do I have to install the Seagate Dash-board file in order to use my drive?
If so, is this software accessible.
If I don't have to install the software that came with this drive, can I
just start copying files to the drive?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Scott.
Here is what works for me. I am using Excel 2007.

If I want to add the sum of cells K1 through K5,

=sum(k1:k5)
Note: it may help to read this formula
character by character to hear where the colons and parentheses are.
Hope this helps.

Yes, you may actually need to check that it is a PCI Express slot or PCI
Express card, the bus speeds are different and I have a feeling that the
card will need to be PCI Express to deliver USB3 speeds.

[JAWS-Users] Advice sought regarding external storage drives

2013-11-14 Thread Pedro Romero
Hi all.
I'm needing to back up my music and data files and am wondering what kind of
external storage device to get.
I am currently using Windows XP.
Also, would a thumb drive be better than an external hard drive?

Lastly, are there USB powered external drives or must they be powered from a
wall socket?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

2013-10-23 Thread Pedro Romero

Hi Maryjane,
This came from our Jaws-Users list dated October 5, 2013.

Sent: Saturday, October 05, 2013 4:45 AM
To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com
Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] unmuting youtube.

Hi

There is a way to do this.

1. Start playing the specific youtube video.
2. Use Jaws key plus z to turn off the virtual cursor.
3. Tab until you reach the unmute button. It is important to know that you
have to tab quite a few times until you get there.
5. When you get to the unmute button, use the up arrow to turn the volume
up again. You will hear all kinds of stuff spoken but the sound of the
video should increase in volume.

The important thing is to turn off the virtual cursor before following the
other steps and turn it on again afterwards.

This worked for me.

Re: [JAWS-Users] winamp and playing more then one song

2012-03-04 Thread Pedro Romero
Hi Brad. I am using a fairly old version of Winamp but here is how I make
playlists.
If I want to play more than one track at a time, I open Winamp then press
letter L then shif-tab in to the folder where my songs are located. Select
the ones you want then press Enter and they should start playing.
If you want to create a playlist, you might press Alt+E then control+tab to
open the playlist editor.
Press letter L to add tracks to the playlist. Add as many tracks as you like
even if they reside in different folders. You can move from folder to folder
using either shift+L or just backspacing to the various folders. You can
then save the playlist with control+S.
Note: you can obtain a list of winamp keystrokes specifically for the
playlist editor by pressing insert+W while in the playlist editor.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to access Thesaurus

2011-04-12 Thread Pedro Romero
Hi Janie. Here are the steps I received from Brian Lee and they seem to be
working quite well.

Hello,

I am using Word 2010 but I think getting a list of synonyms is the same in
Word 2007. Select the word that you want a synonym for and use your
application key. Use up arrow a few times and you should find a menu choice
for synonyms. Use right arrow key into the list and down arrow key to hear
the various synonyms. In Word 2010, after selecting the word and using the
application key, the letter Y puts focus right in the list of synonyms. You
can also launch the thesaurus from that menu. When you are in a document,
use F6 to switch between the panes.

Take care.
