says "copied selection to clipboard". In the other verbosity modes,
JAWS simply announces "copied".

Re: [JAWS-Users] the stars in password fields

2018-03-05 Thread Roger Newell
Why is typing the password so difficult? If you are finding that you
need JAWS to speak back each character you are typing because you make
mistakes, I suggest (and please don't interpret this as condescension
or rudeness, because that is not my objective at all) that you buy a
typing program such as Typability or Talking Typer to improve your
typing.

Re: [JAWS-Users] keyboard shortcuts on webpages not working

Some web accessibility professionals discourage using keyboard
shortcuts because browsers, screen readers and operating systems
interpret them in different ways. My personal belief is to keep them
there, but to make sure that there are other ways of choosing the
options if this is possible.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 vs. 2016 vs. 365

2018-02-28 Thread Roger Newell
The reason for the spell-check not working as it used to is that,
rather than spell-check appearing as a dialog box on top of the
regular Word window, it now appears in a pane on the right-hand side
of the screen, just like for some other Word features.

The reason that Word now says "we" is to make the language (a) more
readable for people with lower IQs and those who are less
technologically literate, and (b) to make Word seem more "friendly", a
trend that has taken hold with technology recently. I personally like
it as it makes Word seem tailored more for individual users.

I believe that the primary issue is that documents vary widely in

Re: [JAWS-Users] Can link be located after the associated tex?

2018-02-26 Thread Roger Newell
I'm not sure if it can be done. But you could try this:
1. Press INSERT+6 on the numbers row to open Settings Center.
2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to adjust settings for all applications.
3. Press TAB to move to the tree view.
4. Press DOWN ARROW until you reach the item entitled "Text Processing".
5. Press RIGHT ARROW to expand these options.
6. Press DOWN ARROW to reach the item entitled "General".
7. Press RIGHT ARROW to expand these options.
8. Press DOWN ARROW until you reach the item entitled "Say Item State First".
9. If this option is checked, leave it in that state; if not, press
SPACE to check it.
10. Press TAB until you reach the OK button.
11. Press SPACE to select it.
Once again, I really do not think this will work, but it's worth a try at least.
Remember that you can always reverse the setting later if you do not like it.
Perhaps this can be done with scripting, but it would be beyond my ability.
You should also contact VFO about this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Latest Jaws update

2018-02-22 Thread Roger Newell
I' dbe a bit worried why JAWS is deleting the scripts. It definitely
shouldn't be doing that.

To install the scripts, make sure you are copying them into the folder
C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Freedom
Scientific\JAWS\[JAWSVersion]\Settings\enu

I believe it was actually introduced in 2007 or 2010.

On a side note, Microsoft just published a complete list of

Re: [JAWS-Users] Magic and Jaws

2018-02-22 Thread Roger Newell
I believe there was a MAGic 10.5. I know that you need about JAWS 10
to work with MAGic 11, so working backwards, you would need a version
of JAWS prior to version 10. Considering that JAWS version 11 was the
first version to support Windows 7, I would hope that the client is
using Windows XP, but I would recommend that they consider upgrading.
If they are in the United States, they can try Computers for the Blind
which can be accessed at https://www.computersfortheblind.net/ If
Computers for the Blind is not a satisfactory solution, I would
suggest NVDA as a better option than using a version of JAWS produced
more than ten years ago.

If you are using JAWS version 16, you must download Vocalizer
Expressive version 1. I know that you did not download version 1
because version 1 does not have "voice packs", i.e. you will need to
download each voice separately.

You don't even have to use iTunes for that. Voice Dream can receive

In order for a webpage to be fully "accessible", the page also needs
to be usable. I have also run into circumstances where a page may have
every heading tagged as such, every buttonand link labelled correctly

every custom widget operable ... yet the webpage is not easily
navigable, so therefore is not accessible.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Hyperlink in a Word document.

2018-02-12 Thread Roger Newell
You really should not remove the underlining. This is an accessibility
feature for people who visually look at links.
1. Text that is underlined is more noticeable which can assist people
in determining the important parts of a document, or to quickly scan
for a link to click on.
2. It serves as a tool to inform users that what they see is not just
text that is colored differently, but actually a link.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Hyperlink in a Word document.

2018-02-12 Thread Roger Newell
Using a phrase like "click here" is contrary to best practices for
accessibility which state that link text should give details as to the
specific content of the link. So, for instance, if you wanted the user
to click a link to find out more information about pet food, you might
have the link as "More information about pet food". This way, a JAWS
user who might use the JAWS list of links feature to find your link
would know exactly what the link pertains to without having to find it
in the document to read thesurrounding text.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws version confusion

JAWS 18 is the major version behind JAWS 2018. You will need to pay
for, or use your SMA to upgrade just as you did from 17 or whatever
previous version you used to 18. To see your build number, go to the
JAWS window and press DOWN ARROW. You will be able to see if there is
a new build of 18 available by going to Help > Check for Updates ...

Re: [JAWS-Users] What, exactly, is a "region" (html navigation)

2018-01-08 Thread Roger Newell
OK, this is going to be a bit of a rant, but please read it all
because you will hopefully find it interesting and important.

About ten years ago, a new concept was invented. It was called Web
2.0. It isn't a new "version" of the web, but rather a new approach to
what the web is and what it can do. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the
web was simply a portal for reading and editing basic information, but
around 2008 or so, this began tochange with the advent of Facebook,
Twitter and more comprehensive websites. People started using the web
for everything from banking to advanced document creation to even
viewing and manipulating the files on other devices.

To keep up with this, The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) created
Accessible Rich Internet Applications (ARIA). Many web developers saw
the need to use nonstandard controls on their websites. For example,
rather than having a button that advanced a user to a completely
different page to see information, they wanted to have controls that
expanded and collapsed different parts of a page. To let screen reader
users know exactly what they were seeing, ARIA can be used to tell the
screen reader and the blind user something like, "Hey. This is a
nonstandard control. Just think of it as a button and you'll be okay.
And by the way, right now, it's open, so there's more information to
see on this page." Web developers can use ARIA to give sections of
their pages custom region names. As an example, go to the Training
Downloads Page of the Freedom Scientific website.

A few years after ARIA came along, HTML5 (the latest version of the
markup language used to code websites) was released. This gave web
developers a lot of new semantic tools to play with because it was
hoped that they would use to identify different parts of their pages
so that one day, when AI would be advanced enough to read and
comprehend webpages themselves, they would be able to more easily
analyse websites using these semantic tags. Have you ever heard JAWS
say something like "article" or "content information"? There are also
tags for naming regions. These are some of the new tags in HTML5, but
be aware that sometimes JAWS does not speak the correct name for the
tag, which is one reason why JAWS is only somewhat
standards-compliant. In JAWS 2018, you have the ability to customize
what tags JAWS speaks aloud. To see this, go to Settings Center >
Web/HTML/PDF > Reading > Customize Web Verbosity Levels or something
like that.

So how do ARIA and HTML5 go together to announce regions? The answer
is that they often overlap. This page
(https://dequeuniversity.com/assets/html/jquery-summit/html5/slides/landmarks.html)
explains this in greater detail and may be of more use to the people
doing the web design. It is somewhat strange that we can access this
page as it is part of a paid course, but it came up in Google search
results.

So, to summarize, if at all possible, the web developers should
embrace both HTML5 and ARIA to make the most accessible website
possible.

Sorry for the long explanation.

Re: [JAWS-Users] An unusual query re vocalizer voices

2017-12-18 Thread Roger Newell
It can be done more easily with Eloquence. Use the backquote symbol
(Unicode 2035) followed by the letter v and the number from 1 to 8
corresponding to the voice that you desire. Using other parameters,
you can also adjust speed, pitch, breathiness and roughness. JAWS has
an interesting interpretation on this that may not always work, so you
might prefer using the Eloquence speak window available from this link
(http://www.grossgang.com/tts/old_software_synths/ETI-Eloquence_speak_window.exe)
where you can just enter the ` symbol instead of having to use the
backquote symbol. The Eloquence speak window also allows for adjusting
other parameters such as intonation and vocal tract that JAWS does not
allow for. The manual available at this link gives instructions on the
full range of capabilities of the Eloquence Speak Window:
http://www.grossgang.com/tts/old_software_synths/eloqman.zip

Alternatively, your niece may prefer the DECtalk speak window
available from http://www.theflameofhope.co/dectalk/440/dectalk440.zip
which allows for its own set of vocal parameters that can be adjusted
from the keyboard, but also has pictures that your niece may prefer to

Turning off images in the Internet Explorer settings helps to a very
small yet perhaps still noticeable degree.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Anoying Internet Explorer. [Chrome]

2017-12-12 Thread Roger Newell
Yes, they are exactly the same. "Chrome" is just a shortened form of
the name "Google Chrome", just as "Explorer" is a shortened name of
Internet Explorer, "Edge" is a shortened form of Microsoft Edge and
"Firefox" is a shortened name of Mozilla Firefox.

try unchecking the checkbox "use JAWS on the Windows Logon screen".
Pressing Space then typing your password and hitting Enter should work
fine.

That is true of all screen readers and is a result of emerging web
standards being applied in many different ways.
