Whenever the problem occurs, what you can try to do is copy all of the information and place it in a new document. Also, as one other poster suggested, go into your options settings and set it up to save at specific time intervals. Regarding the ribbons, for me personally, they are infuriating because I cannot remember all of the keyboard commands for documents and spreadsheets. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Stuttering Issue - WAS: very aggravatingproblem with jaws not responding
Mike: Would you happen to have the steps for Windows Vista and JAWS version 11? I have been having the same headache, although I sometimes think that it is my headphone port; because If I plug in a set of headphones, JAWS works as it should. But whenever I unplug them, it starts stuttering and intermittently cutting in and out. - Original Message - From: Mike B. mb69ma...@charter.net To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, October 13, 2012 10:31 AM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Stuttering Issue - WAS: very aggravatingproblem with jaws not responding Hi Annette Other List Members, Awhile back, I'm not sure if the stuttering problem I had was with J12 or 13, running XP, below is what I found was causing the stuttering issue on my computer. I am not saying this is any of your problems but, it's not hard to check. I don't even know how the hell I found this problem! I think it came to me after falling hitting my head on the edge of Doctor Phil's couch! LOL LOL Anyways, the steps below are for XP. When I get the courage to turn on my Widows7 computer I'll try to send the steps for Widows7. 1. Open the control panel and press enter to open Accessibility Options. 2. Control + Tab to the display page. 3. Tab to Cursor Options Blink Rate left right slider, this should be at 63%. 4. Tab to Cursor Options Width left right slider, this should be at 0%. Take care. A 32bit laptop and desktop running JAWS 12 and a 64bit laptop running JAWS 13 and 12. The problem is intermittent and inconsistent. I talked to FS support when I first noticed on my 64bit laptop and I was told that it was a problem with my laptop. Now that it is happening across 3 computers, I think it is an issue between JAWS and Windows7. When the stuttering occurs, I just wait for JAWS to stop stuttering and re-read the material. At least there are fewer steps. I wrote those instructions some time ago but I just checked the JAWS 13 help system and found that they now have repair instructions almost identical to those I wrote. You should first make sure you have the latest build of JAWS 11. Go into the JAWS interface window and use Alt+H followed by A to bring up the About JAWS window. Listen for the build number. You will hear JAWS 11.0 and then the build number. The build available for download from the Freedom Scientific JAWS archives page is 1476. If you have an earlier build then you can use the Check for Updates menu item in the JAWS help menu. If the search gives an update for JAWS 11 then check the box and install it. If you already have build 1476 then you can download the file you need from ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1476-32 bit.exe Save it to a folder that you can easily browse to when using the Run dialog box. Here are the steps I wrote, which are shown as the second method in Lenny's message. 1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box. 2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar. 3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key. 4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says open colon edit combo, press the end key and then press spacebar. 5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately by the word type then a space and then the word repair. 6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key. 7. Follow the prompts. Feel free to contact me if I can help you further with this process. Take care. Here is the correct procedure for repairing Jaws. Two methods, I got from another lister. Blank Here is the info. Just change the version or highlight your current version using browse. Follow the steps below; The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support. 1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into the main root of the C drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11 most recent you would paste a copy of J11.0.1430-32bit.exe into the main root of the C drive. To open the main root of the C drive, go to the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and now you have the main root of the C drive open. 2. With the Jaws .exe pasted into the C drive, highlight the .exe , and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive. What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box instead of just the title. 3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC , C:\ without the quotes or spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key to take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following /type repair without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line of text should look / read like. C:\J11.0.1447-64bit.exe /type repair Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper spaces, Forward back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of the title and press enter to start the repair. A 2nd way to do the same thing. 1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box. 2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar. 3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key. 4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says open

Re: [JAWS-Users] resources for your child-Re: Most commonly usedprograms
If I may interject a point into this conversation... My son is not visually impaired, but I am and I have been having issues with our school system, in the problem of trying to help with my son's homework. A majority of his homework does not come from the textbooks, but from websites on the internet. Whenever I would try to access these sites to try to explain a problem to him, these sites are not accessible with JAWS. I even attempted to get the books in braille (which I was able to), but the teachers, after receiving them, said that almost 90% of the information comes from worksheets from different educational websites. I do not want to be the discouraging wet blanket, but if anyone has any ideas or suggestions as to how to correct this problem, by all means please clue me in. Go into the jaws interface (insert key plus letter j). The press alt key plus h for help and explore the various training materials in this menu. In addition, I would talk to your child's vision teacher and see if that person has assistive technology resources that you can meet with as needed. Also, your state may have a state department that deals with instructional materials for children with a disability. And finally, there are qualified blind teachers/trainers out there that offer on line training that you can talk to the vision teacher/special education director about and try and get the school system to fund such training. No doubt sighted kids are being trained how to use various programs, and if the school does not have the resource to teach your child, then ask why the school cannot provide your child with the needed resources. The law requires the school system to provide your child with the needed resources.
