Mike:

After following your steps, as well as the steps of others, I found that
once on IE, I go to File, then to Favorites, and then down arrow to the
Organize Favorites Heading. Then I press enter. This brings up the
keyboard options for what I need to do i.e., Move, Delete, New Folder, etc.
So, with the suggestions of all those involved, I figured it out. Thanks.

Hi

I have never seen Windows Vista, so I can't tell you the folder path to
favorites. But typing favorites in the search box or run dialog should
work. As for creating the new folders and moving items, since the steps
below work in both Windows XP and 7, and Windows Vista is between those
two,

I would think they would work the same.

Hi

I think the easiest way would be to go to the favorites folder in Windows
Explorer, create the folders you want and then put the individual items
into
the folders

You can find the favorites folder by doing the following. In Windows XP,
go
to the Documents and Settings folder, then to your user name folder, and
then to the favorites folder. In Windows 7, go to Users, your user name,
favorites.

When you are in the favorites folder, press alt-f for the file menu and
then select new and then new folder and press enter. Immediately type
the

name you want for that folder and press enter. Then press enter on that
folder to open it. Now alt-Tab back to the favorites folder, find an
item
you want in that folder and press control-X to cut that item. Now
alt-tab

back to the new folder and press control-v to paste it into the new
folder.
Repeat this process for each item you want to place in the new folder.
When
done, while in the new folder, press alt+f4 to close it. Now go back and
create the next new folder and repeat the steps to move items into it.
Do

this for each folder you want.

Hi Jerry,

Try the following:
1. While in your In-box press Alt + V, for the view menu.
2. Arrow down to, Sort By, press enter to open.
3. You want to have 2 things checked in here, Received Descending.
Arrow

down to, Received, press enter to check it if it's unchecked. When you
press enter on any option in here it will take you out of the sub-menu so,
go back into the Sort By submenu press enter on, Descending. With these
2

items checked you should have your email sorted the way you want them.

Hope this helped.
Take care.

Here in Texas, I am a member of the Texas Talking Books program, and they

read the digital books from Texas Talking Books. You will need to get a

Re: [JAWS-Users] Ribbons

2012-12-07 Thread Jerry Martin

Miriam:

I am using Windows Vista with a 32 bit system on a HP laptop, with JAWS
version 11 and Office 2007. I have encountered your saving issues myself.
Whenever the problem occurs, what you can try to do is copy all of the
information and place it in a new document. Also, as one other poster
suggested, go into your options settings and set it up to save at specific
time intervals. Regarding the ribbons, for me personally, they are
infuriating because I cannot remember all of the keyboard commands for
documents and spreadsheets. There are websites where you can get all of the
keyboard commands and save it on your computer for quick references. Hope
all of this helps.

I had problems with Word 2003 on my XP computer. I have a sighted computer
person who transferred all my stuff to the WIN7 computer last December. I
thought the Word problem would disappear on the new computer, but it
didn't.

It's hard to describe but occasionally, when I try to close a document, it
won't close. It tells me that it's still open somewhere else even when I
have a document that hasn't been saved and I just want to close it. It
tells
me that it wants to rename the document as normal and if I won't do
that,
it asks me if I want to change the universal template. If I say no, I
can
close the document. But if I'm trying to save a document and Word decides
to

do this, then I lose the document.

I don't use virtual ribbons at all. I have office 2007, and between

Office doesn't generally just quit, either you have something wrong with
your computer's hardware or you have some sort of virus.

[JAWS-Users] MS Word and Emphasized words

2012-12-05 Thread Jerry Martin

Please forgive the sometimers if this has been discussed before. I am needing

that my protection agreement was out of date. I told him that I was very aware
of my agreement being out of date, and after talking with him for several
minutes, I finally got to the meat of the call. He wanted to sell me a 1
year's software agreement for $190 for a year. I don't know if this guy was
legit, but I thought it was worth sending an email to all of the listers and
let you know of this. And if he was on the up-and-up, I just hung up on a guy
who was just trying to make a living.

Hi Jerry,

Try the following;
1. While in word, press Insert + V, for Jaws options.
2. Arrow In the search box type, indentation or arrow down a few times to
get passed the search box, press the letter, I, until you land on,
Indentation.
3. Jaws will announce either, Indentation ignore or, Indentation indicate.
Pressing the spacebar will toggle between these 2 choices. Once you have
it
set on, Indentation, indicate, press enter to save your changes close
Jaws

options.

There are other settings for indentation settings in Word but, I am not

Hello:
You can type in sndvol in the search and the volume control will appear.
If you want a shortcut on the desktop, you can do the following:

1. windows key e for windows explorer
2. Find your c drive and press enter.
3. Press w until you arrive to windows.
4. type the word system so you will arrive to system32 and press enter.
5. Now type: SNDSVole and you will land on SNDVol.exe.
6. Press shift f 10 or the applications key and arrow down until you find
send to and expand that submenu.
7. Look for the desktop choice and press enter.
Take care.

I have a windows 7 machine and it does not have adjustments to volume
control except in the system tray I was wondering how to put the icon on
the
desktop. I looked around but could not find how to do it. I could do it
on

a xp machine but can't find the place to send it to the desk top. I like
this laptop very much but I wish it had a volume control button on it.

[JAWS-Users] Page numbers in a document

2012-10-20 Thread Jerry Martin

I have a MS Word question. If I wanted to insert a page number manually at the

right justify, but it justified the whole entire thing; heading and all. I

Another option would be to try the Hadley site using Firefox instead of

I swithchbetween those 2 because they behave differently with Jaws on

If you have NVDA installed, give the page a try using that screen reader.
Even using Jaws 13, there are sites where NVDA will read elements that
Jaws fails to find. My guess is that the buttons that Jaws is having
problems were created using JavaScript. The Hadley folks should know
better than that, because screen readers and JavaScript do not play well

If you have NVDA installed, give the page a try using that screen reader.
Even using Jaws 13, there are sites where NVDA will read elements that
Jaws fails to find. My guess is that the buttons that Jaws is having
problems were created using JavaScript. The Hadley folks should know
better than that, because screen readers and JavaScript do not play well
together.
Let us know how you make out.

My counselor had suggested I take a online course from The Hadley School

until it came to doing the actual lesson. Towards the bottom of the
lesson, there are two buttons. One says Save Changes and the other

However, JAWS does not read or recognize these buttons. I am using JAWS

Hi Jerry,

Another option would be to try the Hadley site using Firefox instead of
IE.

I swithchbetween those 2 because they behave differently with Jaws on some
sites. For instance, Jaws doesn't see the submit button or link for paying
my phone bill when I'm on the site with IE, but FF has no problem with it.
I'm using Jaws 13 Vista, but I've switched between IE FF for several
versions of Jaws now.

Good luck,
Shari

Awhile back, I'm not sure if the stuttering problem I had was with J12

13, running XP, below is what I found was causing the stuttering issue on
my

to check. I don't even know how the hell I found this problem! I think

Anyways, the steps below are for XP. When I get the courage to turn on my

1. Open the control panel and press enter to open Accessibility Options.
2. Control + Tab to the display page.
3. Tab to Cursor Options Blink Rate left right slider, this should be at
63%.
4. Tab to Cursor Options Width left right slider, this should be at 0%.

Take care.

This stuttering problem is happening across all 3 Windows7 computers that
I

use on a daily basis. A 32bit laptop and desktop running JAWS 12 and a
64bit laptop running JAWS 13 and 12. The problem is intermittent and
inconsistent. I talked to FS support when I first noticed on my 64bit
laptop and I was told that it was a problem with my laptop. Now that it
is

happening across 3 computers, I think it is an issue between JAWS and
Windows7. When the stuttering occurs, I just wait for JAWS to stop
stuttering and re-read the material.

Hi Jerry,

Here you go.

Here is the correct procedure for repairing Jaws. Two methods, I
got from another lister.
Blank
Here is the info. Just change the version or highlight your current
version

using browse.
Follow the steps below;
The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of
repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support.
1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair
into

the main root of the C drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11
most recent you would paste a copy of J11.0.1430-32bit.exe into the
main

root of the C drive. To open the main root of the C drive, go to
the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and
now you have the main root of the C drive open.
2. With the Jaws .exe pasted into the C drive, highlight the .exe
, and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press
control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit
field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive.
What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the
Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws
executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the
instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box
instead of just the title.
3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows
key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC ,
C:\ without the quotes or
spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key
to

take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following /type
repair without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line
of text should look / read like.
C:\J11.0.1447-64bit.exe /type repair
Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper
spaces,

Forward back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of
the title and press enter to start the repair.
A 2nd way to do the same thing.
1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box.
2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar.
3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key.
4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says open colon edit combo, press
the end key and then press spacebar.
5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately
by the word type then a space and then the word repair.
6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key.
7. Follow the prompts.

Hi Jerry,

You will likely find the second method shown in Lennie's message to be
easier than the first. At least there are fewer steps. I wrote those
instructions some time ago but I just checked the JAWS 13 help system and
found that they now have repair instructions almost identical to those I
wrote.

You should first make sure you have the latest build of JAWS 11. Go into
the JAWS interface window and use Alt+H followed by A to bring up the
About
JAWS window. Listen for the build number. You will hear JAWS 11.0 and
then

the build number. The build available for download from the Freedom
Scientific JAWS archives page is 1476. If you have an earlier build then
you can use the Check for Updates menu item in the JAWS help menu. If the
search gives an update for JAWS 11 then check the box and install it. If
you already have build 1476 then you can download the file you need from
ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1476-32
bit.exe
Save it to a folder that you can easily browse to when using the Run
dialog

box.

Here are the steps I wrote, which are shown as the second method in
Lenny's

message.

1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box.
2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar.
3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key.
4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says open colon edit combo, press
the

end key and then press spacebar.
5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately
by

the word type then a space and then the word repair.
6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key.
7. Follow the prompts.

Feel free to contact me if I can help you further with this process.

Take care.

Whenever I send this flyer via Windows Mail, the words/text show up, but the

anyone have a possible solution?

Many thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] resources for your child-Re: Most commonly usedprograms

2012-08-07 Thread jerry martin

If I may interject a point into this conversation...
My son is not visually impaired, but I am and I have been having issues with
our school system, in the problem of trying to help with my son's homework.
A majority of his homework does not come from the textbooks, but from
websites on the internet. Whenever I would try to access these sites to try
to explain a problem to him, these sites are not accessible with JAWS. I
even attempted to get the books in braille (which I was able to), but the
teachers, after receiving them, said that almost 90% of the information
comes from worksheets from different educational websites. I do not want to
be the discouraging wet blanket, but if anyone has any ideas or suggestions
as to how to correct this problem, by all means please clue me in.

usedprograms

Ruchi ,
The jaws help system lists programs that work with Jaws as well as tips on
using the program. Go into the jaws interface (insert key plus letter j).
The press alt key plus h for help and explore the various training
materials in this menu.
In addition, I would talk to your child's vision teacher and see if that
person has assistive technology resources that you can meet with as
needed. Also, your state may have a state department that deals with
instructional materials for children with a disability.
And finally, there are qualified blind teachers/trainers out there that
offer on line training that you can talk to the vision teacher/special
education director about and try and get the school system to fund such
training. No doubt sighted kids are being trained how to use various
programs, and if the school does not have the resource to teach your
child, then ask why the school cannot provide your child with the needed
resources. The law requires the school system to provide your child with
the needed resources.

Hi, what are the programs, most commonly used by the blind, that are
completely accessible with jaws? My 9 year old son uses ms word and
PowerPoint at school along with the other programs made specifically for
the blind. But they have computer training at school till grade 8, and I
am not sure how many of those he may be able to use? Next semester they
have publisher, then coreldraw. If there are other accessible programs, I
could work out with the school to train him for those instead- anything
in music editing for example. Please throw light on this.

Ruchi

Open the Find and Replace menu with control-h. Route the Jaws cursor
to
the
PC cursor. Go to the bottom line with the end key and then press
home to
move the cursor to the bottom line. Use insert-right arrow to move
across
the line a word at a time. The first word should be more. Left
click
on
that word with the slash on the numeric keypad.. Press home and move
to
the
right again with insert-right arrow. The first word should be
format,
and
the next word should be special. Left click on special with the
slash
on the numeric keypad. The first word in the list should be
paragraph
mark, the word that Microsoft uses for a hard return. After
clicking,
use
insert-right arrow to replace. I usually replace the paragraph
mark
with
a space to prevent the word at the end of one line coming together
with
the
word at the beginning of the next line. Then press alt-a to replace
all
occurrences of the word. Then press OK. Then exit the Find and
Replace
menu with escape. If you are using two lines to mark a paragraph,
then
you
will have to be creative in preventing eliminating the double lines.
Reply
to me offline if you want my way of doing that, which is by no means
sacred.
