With this version of jaws, the jaws cursor is restricted. I suggest that
you activate the invisible cursor which has no restrictions. I'm not sure
why that was done, but it seems that the jaws cursor seems to follow the PC
cursor and is, as I'm sure you know, restricted from movement in certain
areas.

Hi friends,

Using the latest JAWS 2018 and Microsoft Outlook 2016.
If I open an email, I don't seem to be able to change in to JAWS cursor and
read the top of the message heading where the to and cc fields are which is
how I would normally check this.
Has anyone had any similar issues?
The only way I can read the to and cc fields is to shift+tab back to them
and it is sometimes useful to use the JAWS cursor to read the top part of
the screen.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs

2018-03-10 Thread john_justice
Hello Mike,
John Justice, here.
I work for the state and use configurations which are similar to the ones
you describe.

In the interest of correcting the problem, I brought it to the attention of
our upper level Access group. Their explanation doesn't solve any issues
but it might give you food for thought.

 1. THE ISSUE AT HAND: apparently, what we are experiencing is the
assignment of RAM. Current versions of Jaws tend to utilize a considerable
amount of RAM, especially when changing from one software environment to
another. The result is that the system has to {wait} for enough RAM to
perform the function.
2. PROGRAM PRIORITY ASSIGNMENT: It is possible to assign certain programs
on a PC so that they have a priority when RAM is distributed. This is way
beyond my pay grade Mike but apparently, within reason, certain programs can
be allowed to operate at the expense of others, at least temporarily. There
are exceptions to this rule and certain pieces of software are assigned a
permanent top priority. I imagine that the Windows operating system might
have that kind of assignment.
3. According to our A. T. department, reassignment involves the division of
RAM into smaller compartments which then handle this function. The entire
process scares the heck out of me. It isn't something I'd want to attempt.
There might be someone on our list with more technological knowledge than I
have.
4. A WORKING SOLUTION: I am now operating two computers simultaneously.
One is dedicated to some of the functions I need while the second unit
handles primary functions. For example, I use the secondary unit to load
and display Excel spreadsheets. But even with that arrangement, certain
pieces of software will temporarily shut down Jaws until they are fully
loaded. The down time has been measured and it is usually approximately32
seconds.
5. CREATING HOTKEYS FOR RELOADING JAWS: Finally, we have established
hotkeys which can be used to encourage Jaws to restart. Occasionally,
though rarely, Jaws wil not restart after one of these incidents. We use
three key combinations which are dedicated to reactivating Jaws.

The entire thing is frustrating to say the least, Mike. But it's something
we just put up with since jaws performs so well in most other respects.

Good morning all! I'm trying to help with one of our employees here at work
on an issue where JAWS freezes unexpectedly when switching from one window
to another using the Alt Tab key. The issue is difficult to resolve because
it doesn't happen every time he switches windows. It does happen two to
three times a day on average, and is hindering his efforts to perform his
job. I have offered several solutions, but nothing has worked yet. When
JAWS freezes, he has to wait some 30 seconds before speech comes back.

I wanted to reach out to the list to see if any of you had any ideas as to
how I could minimize this behavior. I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks very much!

Hi Sandy,
I have been using Jaws for about 18 years, and I have my verbosity level set

This way I have the best control over exactly what Jaws speaks.
You can adjust Jaws to your liking with time as you become more familiar

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Chrome [Tutorial for Using the Google Chrome
Browser]

Tutorial for Using the Google Chrome Browser

By David Moore

This tutorial will be done with the latest update of Chrome.

I will also use JAWS 18 and NVDA 2017.2for this tutorial, because they both
work the same in Chrome.

Finally, I will use Windows 10 Creators Update latest public build.

I will assume that you have downloaded and installed Chrome.

There should be a shortcut on your desktop.

Section One:

Launching Chrome:

One way to Launch Chrome, is to press the Windows key or CTRL+Escape and
type Chrome in the search edit field, and press enter when you hear JAWS say
Chrome.

However, since you have already downloaded Chrome, You will have a shortcut
icon on your desktop.

So next, find the shortcut for Chrome on your desktop, and press enter to
open Chrome.

The short cut will actually say Google Chrome, so press G to find the Google
Chrome icon on your desktop.

The first very important step, is to press Windows+up arrow to maximise the
window. Chrome often opens with the window not maximise, and you will get
undesirable results.

Section Two:

Bringing up a web site.

Press CTRL+L or Alt+D

and type the following:

www.freedomscientific.com

The Freedom Scientific web site comes up very quickly.

All navigation commands like: H for heading, E for edit field, C for combo
box, and so on all work just the same in Chrome.

Section Three:

The Virticle Chrome menu:

I will press the Alt key.

The Chrome menu is open.

This is a very large virticle menu that you just keep pressing up and down
arrow through.

I will press insert+up arrow to hear the first option in this menu.

New Tab, CTRL+T.

You can press that command right from the web site you are on.

New Window, CTRL+N

You can press these commands right from your web page, instead of coming
here.

New incognito Window.

History sub menu.

I will press right arrow here to see what is in this sub menu!

History, CTRL+H

So, there is a key command for reading your history.

You can read a few sites you were on right here.

I will press left arrow to close this history sub menu.

Downloads, CTRL+J

There is the command for opening your downloads you have downloaded with
Chrome.

Next, the important Bookmarks sub menu.

I will press right arrow, to open this.

I hear, bookmark this page, CTRL+D

That command will bookmark the page you are reading.

Next down arrow, says show bookmarks bar, CTRL+Shift+B

That command, will show your bookmarks on your Chrome browser for all to
see. I do not want that.

Here is the important one.

manage bookmarks

The command is, CTRL+Shift+O

In here, you can organize your bookmarks into folders, see the bookmarks you
have imported from different browsers, and very importantly, you can
download, to your computer, an HTML file of all of your bookmarks in Chrome.

On your computer, you can press enter on this file, after it downloads, and
a page will show up in Chrome with a list of all bookmarks you have saved in
Chrome. This is an awesome way to download all of your bookmarks right to
your computer, so you can back them up.

That is all for manage bookmarks.

Next, I hear import bookmarks and settings.

press enter on this, and you can import all bookmarks and settings from IE,
and Firefox, right into Google Chrome, and they will be in their
corresponding folders.

Now, I hear all of my saved bookmarks as I continue to arrow down.

Very important!

Sometimes, when I open that bookmarks sub menu, I do not land on the choices
I mension here, but instead, I start hearing my saved bookmarks.
If this happens, I press up arrow a few times, and it gets me to these
choices.

Keep in mind, that many of these choices, like bookmark manager, have key
commands, so you do not have to come to this bookmarks sub menu at all. You
only need to come here most of the time, to arrow through your saved
bookmarks, and enter on the desired one.

To save a web site as a bookmark,

Just press CTRL+D and press enter, and your bookmark is saved.

I will now press left arrow, to close the Bookmarks sub menu!

I will continue to down arrow through this virticle Chrome menu that we
entered by just pressing alt.

The next few are very self explanatory.

The next one I will mension, is the more tools submenu.

I will press right arrow on this.

I hear Save Page as, and the command, CTRL+S.

Next, Save to desktop.

This allows you to save the favorite of the page right to your desktop.
This is how you do this in Chrome, instead of doing this in the file menu in
IE.

It is hidden

In Jaws, adding the Jaws key adds another parameter to the keystroke. Hence,
CONTROL+F is enhanced when adding the jaws key and showing INSERT+CONTROL+F.

John,

Agree that it's not RAM. I suspect that since JAWS 17, when they came out
with a new paradigm for how it works "under the hood", they began to use
some memory space that is often crowded by other applications, or perhaps
subjugated in the processing hierarchy. All I know is, that for any fairly
heavy processing (painting an Internet Explorer screen, loading a PDF file,
launching Outlook) JAWS often shuts down and comes back later announcing
"Home Use Edition". Very irritating. I've turned off the auto restart
capability of JAWS in every version since 17. If a program announces that
it's not refreshing, then I'd rather know that than to just have JAWS shut
down for 20 seconds or more.

This temporary loss of Jaws speech seems to be quite common when involving

I have created shortcut keys for loading Jaws and other reading software.
During that temporary silence, using the shortcut key for Jaws
(CONTROL+ALT+J) doesn't work for restarting jaws. This is a bit out of my
league but could it have something to do with not enough RAM in the system?
If so, that would be a surprise to me. My new desktop at work has 18 gig of

I temporarily lose speech often when accessing an SD card in my built-in
card reader. Here's what happens.

When I insert my SD card into the card reader, most times I lose speech for
about 20 seconds and each time I take some action the same thing happens.
For example, I must wait about 20 seconds or so after inserting the card
before I can arrow up and down to locate a folder. Once I get speech, I can
arrow up and down fine, but as soon as I enter on a folder name to open the
folder, I lose speech again for about 20 seconds. The same thing happens
when I press the applications key to bring up the context menu. I must wait
the 20 seconds or so before I can arrow through the menu.

I'm running JAWS 2018 on Windows 10 version 1703, although this same problem
occurred on JAWS 18 on this computer. This only happens with SD cards and
not absolutely every time, but most times. Accessing the local SSD, external
USB drives and network drives all behave as they should.

I suspect this might be an issue with some setting in Windows 10, but I have
no idea what setting or where to look for it. And perhaps it's something
altogether different. I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks,
Jeff

[JAWS-Users] spam detector

I'm using Windows 10 and jaws 18. Many of the messages from this list are
ending up in the Spam Detector folder. I have tried going to the Junk

those from Mike B and J. M. Casey for some reason.

Can anyone make a suggestion as to what else I can do to stop this annoying

Perhaps this will be of interest to someone.

I was playing with Edge this morning, browsing recipes. I found one I
wanted to copy but it's not yet possible to do this either in JAWS or
Narrator. Rather than search for the recipe using IE or Chrome, I opted for
a work-around. I unloaded JAWS and pressed control a, for select all, then
pressed control c. I then opened Word and pressed control v. I then loaded
JAWS and there was the recipe, along with the rest of the web page. Smile.
I just told JAWS to find one of the words in the recipe title, and then
deleted everything above and below the recipe. It was cumbersome, but it
worked. The process was even easier when I tried the same thing using the
print button. I tabbed through until I got to cancel and there was the
recipe, stripped of everything else.

Granted, it's far easier at this point to use IE or Chrome, but if you get
annoyed or frustrated at not being able to do something technologically
that's available to others, there is sometimes a work-around.

Perhaps Microsoft will resolve this for us soon. Smile.

[JAWS-Users] New JAWS 18 build

2017-10-15 Thread john_justice
I work for the state of Pennsylvania. After some testing, the entire state
has elected to distribute Microsoft Office 365 to all of its agencies and
employees. Once in stalled, that outlook version is quite stable but the
security measures required when installing the software are enough to pull
out what little hair I have left. (grin)
When it comes to browsers though, the newer versions of Jaws seem to be
dealing better with Google chrome and even with the Microsoft Edge. It's
not perfect but Jaws is certainly getting there.
My compliments to Eric and the work his team has been doing along with
Microsoft. My sighted reps tell me that Edge is pretty good. That, as they
say, remains to be seen.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS Word 2016 and Spell-check

2017-04-03 Thread john_Justice
Hi Wayne.
I use Office 2016 constantly. I can make several suggestions as regards the
Spell check function.

1. The Alt combinations no longer function. Depending on the current
status, the single letter will often perform the function desired. However,
Word 2016 provides additional support which can be difficult to operate
until you understand it.

2. In the Default setting, Word 2016 checks both the spelling and the
context. If the system finds a phrase which doesn't match the pre-approved
parameters, it will stop and provide an explanation. It's that explanation
which causes the system to act differently. In a sense, it will not only
suggest a different sentence structure but will explain why this change is
necessary. To get out of that dialog, just press the Escape key.

3. The safest and easiest way to navigate Word 2016's Grammar and Spelling
checks is by tabbing. Here's an example.
If a word is found which appears to be misspelled, Word 2016 will give you a
list of possible alternatives. To select the one you want, just move down
the list and press Enter to confirm the choice. In some cases, it may still
be necessary to move to the "Change" button and press enter there as well.

4. it is possible to remove the Grammar check and simply have the system
check for spelling errors, but it isn't easy. In fact, I haven't found the
correct ribbon which contains that option.

5. Word 2016, like its predecessors, will alert you of differences in
spacing. That too comes up as an announcement. All you have to do is
locate and engage the Change button.

6. This thing is punctuation conscious. Again, the explanation message
shows up and it tells you why the punctuation should be changed. I don't
always agree with the justification so I will Escape out of the message,
move to Ignore and press enter to confirm my choice.

I hope that this helps you a bit. The dictionary in Word 2016 is much more
massive than anything Microsoft has created before. It is more than five
times the size of the file in Word 2007.

I do a lot of writing and spell-check is essential for my work. I am
currently using MS Office 2007 on 1 machine and 2010 on another. I went to

can you point me to where I can learn how to navigate it. The older

[JAWS-Users] SCANNED OR IMAGED DOCUMENTS FROM THE STATE'S PERSPECTIVE

2017-02-11 Thread john_Justice
Hello group,

I don't post here often but I noticed a thread involving a "good OCR scanner
for reading scanned documents". I've been a Jaws user since the
mid-eighties and I don't know much about Apple IOS and any programs which
operate on it. However, I can recommend Open Book without reservation. I
work for the state of Pennsylvania and scanned documents are everywhere.
Adobe, by itself, just won't allow Jaws to read one of those documents. A
Freedom Scientific rep provided the best explanation. A scanned document is
actually a type of photographic image. Jaws doesn't read graphic images
like that. If you have a graphic representation which appears regularly on
a web site or in a piece of software, you can certainly "tag" that graphic
and many Jaws users do exactly that. However, a multi-page scanned graphic
is something entirely different. For the record, the material is actually
there. A sighted user can read the document clearly but Jaws doesn't
interact with it at all. You can safely ignore the Jaws warning about an
"empty document".

Now, if you take that same document and import it into Open Book, the
document can be read, edited and even saved in various formats. It doesn't
matter whether you are using a camera like Pearl or a flat-bed scanner.
Open Book will definitely read the document.

There may be other programs which do the same thing but none of them I have
found, do better than Open Book. Here's why. Open Book has its own speech
drivers which can be set up in any way you need. You can edit or correct a
scanned document and save the results immediately.

There are other software packages which will scan and read an imaged
document but none work as smoothly with Jaws as Open Book does.

(

Grin)

The preceding announcement was brought to you by the VFO Group.

Yeah, I know it sounds like a commercial but I have no idea where we would
be without Open Book and that, my friends, is the bottom line.

Re: [JAWS-Users] gold wave recordings

2017-01-02 Thread john_Justice
Paul has sent you an engineer's trick to create a stereo effect. He's
obviously a top flight sound pro. It isn't something I'd attempt using the
method he suggests and I've been editing audio for more than fifty years.
My hats off to him. The way we did it was with something called a closed
loop. You send the signal out through a mixer and then bring it back into
the recording. The tiny difference creates somewhat of a stereo effect.
Paul suggests Reverb as a possibility and that too can help.
But in my opinion, none of those methods really creates stereo; just a poor
substitution.

Kevin,
That effect is sometimes called "wave distortion". It can be caused by
several factors and so I'm going to recommend that you try a few things to
isolate the issue and eliminate other causes of that distortion.
1. To make sure that the distortion isn't being caused by your computer's
sound card, plug in a set of headphones and then try experimenting with the
volume.

If you have a digital recorder such as Olympus, try transferring the file to
the recorder. Then play it on there. If the wave distortion doesn't
continue, then it's your sound card or amplifier.

There are many features available in Gold Wave which can change the way a
sound is heard by passing it through various filters. First, make a copy of
the file.
Then, try filtering the sound using the Gold Wave features.

Finally, a distortion like that might be a part of the original recording
but isn't as noticeable at lower volumes. It is a given fact that when you
add more power to an output, you add more headroom giving the signal a
chance to distort.
Good luck.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 or 2013

2017-01-02 Thread john_Justice
You are right, Sir.
In order to maintain your list of folders and contacts, a file has to be
imported from the 2010 application. It is a .past file.
As kimsonKimson pointed out, there are times when, for some reason, that
happens automatically. For the most part, the .pst file has to be copied
and then placed into the newer Outlook. There are several ways to do this
and I'm not 100% sure of the best way.
The process is clearly laid out in the Outlook 2013 Help files.
I think it's listed as "Importing contacts from another program" or
something like that.

Sorry I can't be more specific about it.

Regarding the differences between office 2010 and office 2016, there are
distinct variations.
In Microsoft Word and in Outlook, the editing functions are quite different.
In Office 2010, you can use keystrokes to enter your instructions. For
example, ALT+C = Change, ALT+A = ADD TO DICTIONARY, ETC. OFFICE 2016
requires that you tab through the options and use the spacebar to confirm
your choice.
If you copy text from another source and try to paste it into Microsoft
Word, you are asked to choose how the paste is to be handled. You can make
permanent changes to this dialog, of course.
Other than that, there isn't much difference on the front end. Internally,
there are significant changes.
Saving a file is no longer as easy as it was in 2010. But, those changes do
make it easier to make sure that the file ends up in the right folder.

2016-12-31 Thread john_Justice
Steve,
I agree with Jason entirely. You seem to have an issue with contaminated or
missing components. I'd completely uninstall all of your Jaws versions.
When you are asked if you want to remove the accompanying files, you should
indicate Yes. Once all of your Jaws versions are gone, then re-install from
a clean copy of Jaws 18. Let me add one more important caution. Make sure
you have the Product ID code or your licensing code for Jaws. You have a
unique ID code which is yours alone. If you don't know it, contact Freedom
Scientific, go through their verification procedure and make a record of
your ID.

We had this issue some time ago and that's what we had to do. Once you get
past all of that, you'll have to recreate environmental settings for all of
your applications.
In plain English, you will have to open each application and set Jaws up to
work by making specific settings. It's a mess, Steve but it may be the only
way you can get back to using Jaws again.
Normally, "shared components" aren't an issue but in your case, there's a
problem and that's why you are getting those messages.

Hi All, no matter how much time I reinstall JAWS the programme just won't
start. I get the message "one or more shared components are missing. Please
reinstall this product in an effort to fix this problem."
I was using JAWS 17 64bit but when I tried to upgrade to JAWS 18 the problem
started. Now not even JAWS 17 or lower won't install.

I am using NVDA to write this email and I don't know how to disable AVG so
uninstalled the antivirus altogether.

Please help me someone.

Thanks a million.

Re: [JAWS-Users] gold wave recordings

2016-12-31 Thread john_Justice
Kevin,
That effect is sometimes called "wave distortion".

Good luck.

[JAWS-Users] A COUPLE OF TIPS AND TRICKS FOR WINDOWS 10

2016-12-31 Thread john_Justice
Hi group,

I picked these tips up from a knowledgeable Microsoft Disability support
representative. They are shortcuts to Windows 10 functions, and are to be
typed into the Run field.

Find Windows10 current version: winver

Go directly to Programs and Features: aptwiz

There may be others but I found the direct link to programs and features
very helpful.

Under Microsoft Windows, unlike other systems that I've used, re-installing
software sometimes does correct problems. I don't know why this is the case
- registry entries, perhaps, or updates that aren't installed properly.

In general, MS-Windows is very complex. There are plenty of bugs and plenty
of opportunities for problems to emerge, especially if you're using a screen
reader.

I would definitely recommend restore points, system backups and
re-installation as problem solving methods for Windows systems.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Office 2010 or 2013

2016-12-26 Thread john_Justice

That's all I can think of right now. I'll post again if I think of anything
else.

VERY IMPORTANT! It is possible to obtain Office 2016 on disk but

to do with this or that Office 2013/2016 and JFW issue, but as it didn’t
affect me, I didn’t pay them much attention. I’m running the latest 12/5/17
JFW update.

I plan on buying the32 bit version since there’s no real advantage of
getting the 64 bit one even though the machine will be 64 bit.

Any input would be appreciated.

Actually,
That doesn't happen, at least in my case.
For some reason, it bypasses that dialog and attempts to install one version

Hello fellow Jaws users. I wanted to thank David Ferrin for his help with
this situation. One of our list members recommended that I initiate a
repair of Jaws. To be quite honest, I didn't remember how to do that.
Below, is a detailed set of instructions. In this situation, we are using a
"command line" which directly handles the repair. I hope that there are
others who might want to save these instructions for the time when they
might have to repair Jaws. Thanks again, David.

JAWS REPAIR SEQUENCE

This is the procedure for initiating a repair in Jaws. Make
sure that there is a clean copy of the most current version of Jaws in the
Downloads folder.

1.Focus on the executable file.

2. Press SHIFT+APPLICATIONS key.

3. Press the letter A until Copy As Path is reached and press Enter to
initiate that process.

4. Open a Notepad screen and paste the copied path into it.

5. Press spacebar and then the following command line.
/type repair That is space, forward slash immediately followed by the word
type, space, the word repair

6. Copy or cut the entire sequence onto your clipboard.

7. Open the Run option by pressing WINDOWS+R.

8. Use CONTROL+V to paste the command line into the Run field. Press
Enter.

9. Return to the Notepad screen and close the file.

10.The function will continue automatically until the system requests a
Restart. Press enter to initiate that process.
NOTE: If the latest version of Jaws is already present in your system and
you try to execute the new file, a warning message will appear, directing
you to use Control Panel to remove the current version before attempting to
install the new one. If you have more than one version of Jaws on your
system or you are familiar with how to operate narrator, this might not be a
problem. However, using this command line function is a more direct
approach. There may be other ways to achieve the same results.

[JAWS-Users] NAVIGATING TABLES IN AN HTML DOCUMENT OR ON THE WEB

Does anyone know the Jaws command which will allow me to move from one table
to another on the same screen? I work for the state. We use tables in an
html environment. I have no trouble navigating the tables. But what I'd
like to do is move quickly from table to table. There are usually at least
three tables on any page. They contain client data like birth dates, social
security numbers, type of service requested and so on.

If anyone would like to respond off list, that would be fine but I'll bet
someone else on the list might need to know that.

Thanks in advance for any help.

[JAWS-Users] ODD PROBLEM WITH JAWS 18, LATEST BUILD

2016-12-16 Thread john_Justice
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue. This latest
build of Jaws 18 seems to lock up quite a bit. This happens here at home
and at work. In both cases, I'm using the same jaws and doing similar
things. Suddenly, Jaws will stop talking. That happens especially when I
have several screens operating simultaneously. I'm wondering if too much
RAM is being used and that is what shuts down Jaws. It will normally
respond to the Start Jaws command but not always.

I'm running Windows 10 64 byt at home and Windows 7 enterprise at work. If
anyone has some idea of what's going on here, I'd appreciate the help.

Here's another odd thing. The longer I type in a message with Outlook 2016,
the slower Jaws reacts. Now, when I finish typing a word, Jaws repeats it
but almost a full second after the last letter is typed. Why, in Heaven's
name, would that happen?

Re: [JAWS-Users] OFFICE 2010 WILL LOSE MICROSOFT SUPPORT

2016-12-10 Thread john_Justice
There is an Office version called 365. That is the one which offers a
monthly charge or you can pay for an entire year at one time.
I considered that but it's on line. Office 365 brings you onto that web
site and you store your files on the cloud. It's a bit different and might
take some getting used to. I don't recall the exact charge but it's
something like $11 to $13 per month, I think.
I believe that Microsoft is offering some kind of special deal on that.
Personally, I prefer to have my files right on my PC and I back things up
regularly on an external drive.
It might be a less expensive alternative.

run, but a subscription would make it a little easier to afford...
Plus, I just got a windows suite, for free my my university, I was able to

It is ridiculous to have to pay 250 bucks for something that is necessary I
hope we can all find affordable software andy

Before my vision loss forced me to leave my last job, I got Office 2007 for
something like $10 as part of Microsoft's Home Use program.

If I am forced to abandon 2007, I'll look at Open Office. My needs now don't
include paying $200 or more for Office.

For Security Essentials, I have the original installer. I suspect Windows
update will still continue to update it if it sees it installed.
That should hold me over until I can find an accessible anti virus.
Avast was my favorite until I discovered what an accessibility nightmare it
is.

Cheers!

[JAWS-Users] OFFICE 2010 WILL LOSE MICROSOFT SUPPORT

2016-12-10 Thread john_Justice
I have just learned, from Microsoft Disability Support, that Office 2010
will no longer be supported as of early 2017. I was receiving constant
automated notices on my systems which use this software. Apparently, those
messages were generated because of this development. That's going to cause
some headaches for many people including state run agencies here in
Pennsylvania. Here at home, I use Office 2010 Home and Business. A new
2016version runs about $229 plus tax. I'm not sure if that's a sale price
since Microsoft is now offering a twelve day special sale. With tax in my
state, the total is about $246.

Now here's the problem. Microsoft wants you to have an active Microsoft
account. Downloading the software is, admittedly, much easier with an
account but it's difficult to work with a download without it. You can
always go out and buy the hard copy on disk. That is still an option. I am
not sure what the price would be in a retail store. Usually, the Microsoft
Store's prices are a bit more reasonable.

But what does this mean to the average Office 2010 user? Personally, I have
never called Microsoft directly for support on my Office 2010. I have
received help from the Disability Desk of course. Under normal
circumstances, this would not be a problem. But knowing computers as we all
do, there might come a time when an issue is encountered which cannot be
corrected normally. It is then that support becomes essential.
Fortunately, that is rare for most of us. Are they trying to force
purchases of their newer software? Probably. The decision to act is up to
each of us as individuals. There are some definite differences between 2010
and 2016. I'm at the very beginning. However, one of them does concern me.
I use Outlook as my e-mail client. Apparently, some e-mail providers are
using different security protocols which may not be supported by older
e-mail software. In addition, Microsoft Live essentials will no longer be
supported as of January, 2017. Microsoft is saying that Live Mail will
still work if it is already installed on your system. But it will no longer
be available for download. The accompanying antivirus software was, in my
opinion, never that good to begin with. But it too will no longer be
available. That development is confirmed by an article posted by David
Goldfield, somewhat of a technical guru in Philadelphia. . Maybe someone on
this list has an antivirus program which is still accessible with jaws. I
am using Avast but it has its problems. It is usable but only just.

I wanted to let everyone on the list know about these developments. Not
everyone can afford the kind of investment purchasing Office 2016
represents.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Need format cells command in Excel 2010

2016-10-13 Thread john_Justice
Hi Greg,
I got these notes from a class I took about Excel at Hadley Institute. I
hope it's what you're looking for.

FORMATTING CELLS FOR SPECIFIC DATA:
1. Line up on the cell you want to format.
2. Press the Applications key and look for the Format option.
3. The display starts with Number and you tab to the settings.
The next option is the type of data for that cell. It includes General,
Numbers, Currency.
If Currency is chosen, the next option is number of decimal points.
Next is the choice of mark. I chose Dollar.
4. There's a Negative Number option which was skipped.
5. Finally, move to the Okay and press Enter.
Once a cell has been formatted, you can copy that information, highlight the
other cells in the column and press Control V which pastes the same
formatting into the other cells in that column.

[JAWS-Users] COMMENTS ON THE LIST

2016-10-12 Thread john_Justice
David,

I have seen many responses to your earlier message and wanted to add my own.
Every time I have a Jaws issue, I try to find the answer here. This is a
good list and a very helpful one.

I'm sure that you are getting tired of it after all of these years but don't
give up on us, David. I, for one, need a resource for serious helpful
information about Jaws.

Finally, perhaps one explanation of why the list is quiet is that Jaws is
behaving itself for the most part. However, Jaws 18 is coming and if
Freedom runs true to form, there are bound to be glitches, bugs and errors
which will require correction. Hang in there, David.

[JAWS-Users] deactivating Protected View, a short and sweet solution

2016-10-08 Thread john_Justice
I use this method and it's reliable.

1. Press the Alt key to activate the menu options.

2. Down arrow to the Info option. This sometimes passes by and you
might have to go back up to it.

3. Tab three times till you hear Protected View.

4. Press Spacebar and then exit the menu options.

That usually works and it doesn't change the way Word handles all files.
Some of them you might not want unprotected.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Need help with Outlook 2010 message rules wizard

2016-09-05 Thread john_Justice
Norma,
Your folders are arranged in what Windows calls a tree. But, before you
can create a new folder, you first have to choose the option indicating that
you want to move the message to a folder. Once you have checked that box,
you will be presented with a list of your current folders. In order to
create a new one, use your up arrow to go to the top of the list and listen
for the root of the tree, usually your name. Then shift tab to where New
Folder is indicated. Press enter to activate that option. Type the name of
the folder. Confirm that it will contain mail or post items. Then tab to
Okay and press enter.

Using this method, the folder will be shown in your main tree display.
Be careful to always move to the top because you will inadvertently create a
folder within a folder. For example, if your focus is on the In box, you
can create a folder within the In box. Personally, I don't do that because
accessing those folders in Outlook 10 can be difficult.

This is very general but it might help to clear up some of the confusion.
Please feel free to e-mail me off list if you need further clarification.

Hi group,

I'm using Jaws 17 latest build with outlook 2010. When in the message rules
wizard, Jaws is not reading the list of items in the list boxes. I'm using
the wizard that comes up when I go to File then Info then I hit the "Manage

there was a simpler wizard than the one I'm trying to use now. Sort of a
quick and dirty method that, as I recall, was more useable with Jaws.
Anyway, I would appreciate some assistance with this process, and thanks in

Re: [JAWS-Users] copying several pages of a 10 page document

2016-08-18 Thread john_Justice
Tom,
I'm using Word 2010 and Jaws 17. Here is how I do it.
1. Place your PC cursor on the first line at the beginning.
2. Hold down the shift key and press the Page Down button.
3. Remember. Pages in Word are usually divided into two sections. For a
two page copy, you'll need to press Page down three times.
4. You have now highlighted the text. Press CONTROL+C to copy it to your
clipboard.
5. Open a new Word document by pressing CONTROL+N.
6. Press CONTROL+V to paste the copied text into the new document.
7. Once this is done, I always check the work to make sure that I have
copied all of the information I need. You might need to add or trim
something at the top or bottom of the document.

That's it, Tom. There are probably other ways to do this but I have found
this method to be the most reliable.

As rick would say, "HTH".

Re: [JAWS-Users] virticle tab?

2016-05-20 Thread john_Justice
I did a little research on this. When a message is sent electronically and the
message was not processed by a word processor such as Wordpad or Microsoft
Word, the vertical tab is a very important character. It notifies the reader
that the following text was originally placed on another line. The vertical
tab is an identifier indicating the size limits of the original receiving
screen. If you are sending and receiving on a smart phone or an IPod, the
vertical tab is a common occurrence.
There may be other explanations for this particular character. Causing Jaws to
avoid pronouncing it is, in my opinion, a mistake.

Re: [JAWS-Users] upgrading to windows 10

2016-04-29 Thread john_Justice
Nice, Ed.
You put everything into one succinct package. Kevin mentioned one
additional issue.
The Windows 10 e-mail client was written using the same language as Edge.
It will not work well with jaws. You can, however, use an already existing
e-mail client in lieu of the one built into Windows 10.
Well done, Ed. I believe that your message alone will give anyone the tools
they need to complete this job.

Here is the instructions from the Windows 10 Jaws group run by Jim. If you
want to join this group and download all the audio files and text files that
will help you setup W10 and customize it with Jaws. Click on this link to
join.
windows-10-and-jaws-subscr...@yahoogroups.co.in

Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16 or 17.
go to:
http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade
Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your download folder.
Download jaws 16.0.4350 or Jaws 17, leave it in your download folder for
future use.
Download the Microsoft media creation tool at:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
On this web page, Go to download link now, Microsoft will determine if you
have a 64 or 32 bit system, they are both built into the tool.
Download the tool and save it to your download folder for future use.
Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder.
Not sure if you have to reserve w-10 now?
Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so.
press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification area.
go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this gives you a
verification email.
Now, restart your computer.
check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure you have all
the latest updates.
Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10.
Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws fragmented files
and so on from your system.
Tip, after running the F S tool on your w-7 computer, any time you restart
your computer, you will get a message from Jaws saying:.
The mirror drivers are configured incorrectly, press the spacebar on this
message.
In w-10, Jaws does not use the mirror drivers, that is the reason for this
message.
Next, Run the media creation tool.
yes, for your users account warning.
Choose, update this computer now and press enter.
you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says:
Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer.
This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your
download speed.
When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself
updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10.
Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement,
check the yes and press enter on next.
Again, the program will run through several screens by itself.
Next, press enter on install.
now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to
complete.
After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator.
Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away.
Almost done.
press the next button.
choose express settings.
press the next button.
if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on talking on the
desktop in your new w-10 PC.
Now, this is very important, uninstall and reinstall jaws 16 or 17.
This will give you the maximum performance in the w-10 environment.
Tips on how to do this.
Go to programs and features, press enter on Jaws 16 or 17.
Say yes, for your user's account message.
Uninstall Jaws, Keeping shared settings and personal settings.
If the Jaws dialog does not tell you to restart, Turn Narrator on, Windows
key+enter, restart your computer.
Wait the appropriate time for restarting, turn Narrator back on, Windows
key+enter.
Go to your download folder where you have already put the latest Jaws 16 or
17, set up file.
Press enter on the Jaws setup file.
Follow the Jaws prompts, to install Jaws 16 or 17.
After reinstalling jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on
talking with all your settings, except for 2 of them.
Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j.
Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen.
All your other settings will be remembered by Jaws.
For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time.
Check for updates, restart, and run the tool again.
In w-8.1, this method usually works the first time.
In w-7, you may have to repeat this method two times.
It is a little more difficult going from w-7, to w-10, then from w-8.1 to
w-10.
There are more drivers which much be updated by Microsoft for your w-7
computer to upgrade to w-10.
After completing your upgrade to w-10, read my text file, called, Windows 10
and

[JAWS-Users] UPGRADING TO WINDOWS 10

2016-04-29 Thread john_Justice
I got the Windows.ios file from the Microsoft website and placed it on my
desktop.

1. Am I correct that I need to completely DELETE Jaws v17 and all its
shared components first
Your best course of action might be to go onto the Freedom Scientific web
site and download the instructions along with a special file which will
assist you in making the transition.?

2. If I start narrator in Windows seven will Narrator talk me through

the installation process?
Yes, at least for the most part. Narrator in later versions after Windows
8.1, is an excellent voice over tool. However, initial stages of the
conversion to Windows 10 will not talk. It might be advisable to request
direct assistance from the Microsoft Disability Support Desk.

800-936-5900

3. When my sighted friend was showing me his windows 10 computer when

narrator started running I heard something about screen reader users

might want to switch to Internet Explorer instead of using Edge I think

it is called. Is this still true?

Yes. As of this time, Microsoft Edge does not talk using Jaws. That is an
ongoing issue which is being worked on by both Freedom and Microsoft. I
believe that a solution will be found shortly. In the meantime, switching
to Microsoft Internet explorer is the correct alternative.

4. Is there anything else I should consider when upgrading that I have

not mentioned?

I recommend that you join the Windows 10 and Jaws e-mail list, at least
temporarily. Jim has quite a few instructional files which you will find
most useful. He stores them on One Drive and will provide direct access on
request. You will find the direct submission link in another message on
this list.

Good luck, Sir. I believe that you will find Windows 10 an excellent
choice.

Good one, Humberto.
Lawrence, depending on the version of GoldWave you are now using, there are
also output options you might want to look at.
In addition, I suggest that you go to Control Panel and look for the Sounds
entry. However, if your system is playing other sound based files and
working normally, I'm betting that the issue is a setting in Gold Wave
itself.

It amazes me that people go crazy when they think that they can get
something valuable for free. I believe that we all have had that
experience. I had an old aunt who lived in Washington DC. She had a saying
which turned up from time to time. My aunt died in 1968 but the validity of
this still holds true even now.

"If they're giving it away for free, it's probably just as easy for them to
throw it away."

As visually impaired people, we have always had trouble getting the
supporting software we need. Jaws is the best screen reader in my opinion
but you pay for what you get. NVDA was developed as a working alternative
and it happens to be free. Unfortunately, free software can often be very
disappointing. If you are a Jaws user and you try NVDA, the experience is
like taking a cold shower. Does it work? Yes it does. But what a
difference!

I believe that we have enough to deal with as blind people and more "free"
software should be designed to make our lives a bit easier. Is the free
scanner as easy as Open Book? No way! But when you think of the
alternative, it's "better than nothing".

Kevin,
I don't know of any free scanning software. The closest I can come would be
the KNFB Reader. It is an app which works on your cell phone. However, it
costs about $90 normally.
That's a lot less than Open Book for sure.
I believe that there are versions wich work for Android as well.
It uses the camera in your phone to photograph the document and then the
software reads it for you.
Unfortunately, that leaves Jaws out of the picture, entirely.

I have a long file that I have to get through. What, for goodness sake, is
the correct Jaws Find command in an e-mail message, using Outlook 2010?

2015-12-03 Thread john_Justice
Hello Mike,
I have two reasons for responding to your original message.
Can you send me the procedure for setting up Adobe Acrobat to open in the
manner you described?

Once your .pdf document is displayed, can you virtualize the screen and copy
the document in that way?
The only issue I can see there is that you'd have an interesting challenge
with documents having multiple pages.

browser such as IE, revisited

Hi

I had made the changes to the Adobe Reader startup Accessibility Assistant
and accessibility preferences that were recommended by FS. PDF documents
were being opened in Adobe Reader as expected until I accepted the download
and installation of the latest version of Adobe Reader, titled Adobe Acrobat
Reader DC, version 15.009.20079. Now, when I press enter or space on a web
site link to download a PDF document, it just opens up in a new IE window.
This new IE window has no menus, including the context menu brought up by
the applications key or shift F10, no link and no buttons to be able to
download it. The PDF document is processed by Adobe reader and can be read
with JAWS. But there is no way to save it to my computer. I know that on
some web sites, when I'm positioned on a link, I can bring up the context
menu and press enter on the Save as option to download the document. But
many of the sites from which I download PDF documents, the save as option is
grayed and unavailable. This behavior exists using both JAWS 16 and 17.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] FS way of making PDF files load in a separate window
in IE

Hi Group,

This morning I receive an email from FS support on how to make PDF files
open in a separate window in IE. Below is the instructions. They seem to be
a lot easier then what I sent out yesterday. I have not tried it as I got my
Adobe working with the instructions I gave you yesterday. So if you try FS
instructions and it workds for you please email back and let the group know.
Below is the instructions from FS.

How to get Adobe Reader to open in its own window by Freedom Scientific

You actually make this change in the Adobe Reader application using the
instructions below:

A. Using the Accessibility Set Up Assistant

When you launch a PDF the first time, the accessibility set up assistant
opens. If the accessibility wizard has already run, do the following to open
it:

1. Press ALT+E to open the Edit menu.

2. Press Y to select Accessibility submenu.

3. Press ENTER on Set Up Assistant. The first page of this five page dialog
box opens. The default choice is fine, press ENTER to move to the next page.

4. On the second page you can change things if you wish, but by default it
is OK. Press ENTER to move to page three.

5. On the third page you can change things if you wish, but by default it is
OK. Press ENTER to move to page four.

6. On the fourth page, if you want to use the list of links, list of
headings, and the JAWS find command so on to access long documents, change
the radio button from

"For large documents, only read the currently visible pages"

to

"Read the entire document at once."

If you do not make this change, in long documents JAWS only sees the links
and headings on the current page. Additionally, JAWS can only search the
current page with the JAWS find command. If you do select read the entire
document at once, it may take a few seconds longer to process large
documents, but it is worth it to be able to see the links and headings in
the entire document, or to search the entire document with the JAWS find.

7. Press ENTER to move to page five of the Set Up Assistant.

8. If the check box for Reopen documents to the last viewed page is checked,
you may want to uncheck this. It is a personal preference. TAB through until
you reach the check box for "Display PDF documents in the web browser," and
uncheck it.

9. Press ENTER to activate the Done button.

B. Additional changes in Adobe Reader XI preferences.

1. Press CTRL+K to open the Adobe Reader XI preferences.

2. In the Categories list on the left side of the dialog box, choose
Accessibility.

3. Press TAB to move to the item, Show Portfolios in Files mode (not checked
by default) - check this.

4. Press TAB to move back to the Categories list and choose Security
(Enhanced).

5. Press TAB to move to Enable Protected Mode at startup (checked by
default) - uncheck this.

6. Press TAB to move to the OK button, and activate it with the SPACEBAR.

[JAWS-Users] WARNING! some key combinations do not work with wireless keyboards

2015-12-03 Thread john_Justice
I'm using a laptop and an older HP wireless keyboard. The Jaws Find command
CONTROL+INSERT+F doesn't work at all on this particular wireless keyboard.

My HP 4140 has a full keyboard with a keypad. I tried the same key
combination on that board and it worked.

There's no way to check for sure but that does concern me.

You buy a board expecting it to work just like a hard wired version and it
doesn't.

[JAWS-Users] WINDOWS LIVE MAIL, SILENT MESSAGES

2010-07-16 Thread John_Justice
I found what might be a working solution to this issue with Jaws not reading
certain messages in Windows Live.
I have tried this several times and it does seem to work.

1. In the view Option, go down to Layout and make sure the Reading Pane is
checked.
2. There are options for placing it either at the bottom or to the right of
the message. Choose the bottom option.
3. If you encounter a message that won't read, activate the Jaws cursor.
There may be a lot of other information in the page that we don't usually hear.
If you are experiencing that, press the Page Down and you can read the
message. It's annoying but it does work.

that should do it, Joe. You think you have problems now. Getting brains

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws speaking: Heading Level 1 question

Hi folks,

Haven't been around in a while, so apologies if this question's been done
to death. Just upgraded to Jaws 11 today, and in every WORD file I open,
every line (be it the first line in a paragraph or continuing text from a
previous line) Jaws reads out: Heading Level 1. Needless to say, since I
write screenplays, this is a problem. According to my wife, everything is
still the same as it was pre-upgrade. Style in WORD is normal, and it's
all plain text. And, it applies the Heading Level 1 to every line, be it
the title, a single sentence, a copyright date, etc.

If somebody can tell me how to stop this or what setting I need to change,
basically anything before I blow my brains out (I'm on deadline, no less),
much appreciated. Thanks!

Best,
Joe Monks

SETTING THE BCC FIELD FOR PERMANENT DISPLAY:
1. Press Alt V for the View menu.

[JAWS-Users] SOUND CARD PROBLEM

2010-03-31 Thread John_Justice
I'm using jaws 11, Windows 7 and an HP Professional Model 550, notebook
computer.
I have 2 sound cards. The internal card is part of the notebook and I have an
additional Sound Blaster 5 which operates via the USB port.
When I type, Jaws chokes up and sometimes doesn't read the entire word when the
USB card is connected. When I disconnect the card and go to the internal,
sound source, Jaws does not have that same problem.

I believe that there is a way to have Jaws 11 recognize an additional sound
card. But I can't seem to find that information or the settings in my support
documentation. This is a somewhat far out question but can someone tell me if
this choking issue might be a conflict between Jaws and the outboard card?

Re: [JAWS-Users] software

Michell,
Send Space is a web site from which you can send larger files, those which
are normally too large for your e-mail program to accept. Most, if not all
e-mail services, have a size limit which would prevent you from sending an
attachment which was larger than their maximum allowed limit. On Send
Space, you can place a link which contains the information you're trying to
send and which can then be retrieved by the person you intended to have the
information.
I hope that makes sense. There are several internet web sites which provide
that kind of service.
