Re: [JAWS-Users] need help in understanding jaws any books or tutorials, , out there?

Hello. I actually got the book on a thumb drive yesterday and I did
email Cathy who did put the book together and will check it out during
the week and she did resend a new link and the download did work so just
thought I would give everyone the update. Thanks for all of the
suggestions. Oh another thing when are they going to get the audio
ducking fixed? I would really love to have this feature cause it drives
me crazy when listening to music in a web page with no controls to raise
or lower the volume. I know in NVDA it works which is really nice. That
would be a huge improvement if the people who work on that to please to
keep that in mind. Thank you.

Hello. Well no such luck, I did buy the book from access technology

when I went to extract the file it had nothing inside. I did buy
Emerging in to Jaws 2018 and was reading once you make the purchase
which I did through pay pal no refunds and it was 94.99. If anyone has a
copy could you email it to me as an attachment just don't like getting
ripped off like this. I did look on the freedom scientific website and
the training material they want you to purchase am not going to do it
since it is 750 dollars on an SD card, and I did not know about anything
about access technology institute, so if anything could use some help
here. I mainly want the jaws book only, am not interested in Office.
Thank you.

[JAWS-Users] need help in understanding jaws any books or tutorials out there?

2018-03-15 Thread Susan Ward
Hello I was wondering if there any books or tutorials of jaws that are
current so I can understand it better. I did come across this one book
from the access technology institute and the book does cover jaws and is
95 dollars and is on Jaws 2018, does anyone know if its well worth the
money cause was reading about it and they walk through every setting and
with the book you get all text and audio formats to help you out. I am
coming from Window Eyes and use NVDA that is also a good screen reader
so just wondering what other people think. Thank you.

[JAWS-Users] how to send youtube link

2017-10-15 Thread Susan Wojtecki

Hi Everyone,

The subject asks it all--using Windows 10 and Thunderbird, how can I
most easily send a Youtube link to a sighted user? I'm not sure they
have Dropbox or anything like that so prefer not to get into file
attachments or anything like that. Haven't done this in a while but the
process seemed more straightforward with XP or Windows 7. I currently
have Windows 10 and latest JAWS, for whatever that's worth, smile. Step
by step much appreciated as will not figure this out without much
coffee, and even then it's doubtful. Tia.

Hello everyone,
I have the 90-day timed license and am reaching the end of my first
renewal cycle. I was told that each renewal is treated separately as a
new version of JAWS. Does this mean that when I go to the website to
renew I will get a new auth number? Do I need to uninstall the
currently running version or jump through any other hoops to avoid
conflicts, and are my settings automatically retained? Not sure how
intuitive the process is and just wondering what to expect when I do
this. Tia.

I tried Clifford's suggestion of turning off the virtual cursor, but
still no joy. And yes, there are situations where I've had better
results than Firefox, but not this time. Nate, I wondered how well
NVDA works with IE as opposed to Edge. I've used it briefly after
upgrading to Windows 10 but not enough to be really comfortable with
it yet. i'll have a play with this some other time, but today
ultimately decided that a phone order was easier and quicker, lol, so
mission accomplished but still puzzled. Thanks to you both for your

Good morning everyone,
I am having difficulty entering payment information at the National
Braille Press site at www.nbp.org and would appreciate any assistance.
Using latest version of JAWS and IE with Windows 10, the payment
screen shows what appears to be a graphic with the text of the card
type. I am unable to check the correct graphic by any of the usual
ways--pressing enter or the spacebar or shift-F10. Can anyone
replicate this and/or suggest what to try? have used this site
successfully many times with JAWS 12 and IE 9 so do not think the
problem is with the page itself or even JAWS necessarily. I expect
this is a simple fix too, smile, but caffeine hasn't really kicked in
either. Tia.

Hi everyone,
Can anyone tell me whether the FS reader can be used to open and play
Bookshare DAISY files? If so, what is the folder pathname in Windows
10 so the downloaded titles can be found? I know there used to be a
Victor tool for this but it's no longer being supported and the
Bookshare website seems to be promoting their webreader rather than
any tool for downloading and saving titles. Since this may be straying
from the topic of JAWS, I'd prefer responses off list to
susan.wojte...@gmail.com if anyone can advise what works for them. Oh,
and am using current JAWS version, assuming FS reader will work for my
purposes Tia.

[JAWS-Users] question re 90-day timed license

2016-08-05 Thread susan
Hi everyone,
I plan to upgrade from JAWS 12 via the 90-day timed license. Will I need to run
the OCR installer or anything else as a prerequisite? Also, I’m currently
running JFW with Windows 7 and would like to continue with 7 until I’m
comfortable enough twith JAWS to upgrade. Not sure at that point whether it
would be best to format and/or do a clean install, but if so wondered if I
could migrate JAWS to a flash drive temporarily. in other words, does the timed
license allow for this or is this considered an additional authorization for
which I might or might not be eligible. Hope question makes sense, smile. Any
advice much appreciated, and thanks to those sending helpful messages re
Windows 10, am watching with interest.

[JAWS-Users] strange behavior regarding downloads

2016-08-05 Thread susan
Hello listers,
I would appreciate any help or advice regarding an ongoing problem.

I’m running JAWS 12 and IE 9 on a Windows 7 machine. Until relatively recently
all downloaded files went to what I believe to be the default location of
C:/username\downloads. However, recently my downloads have been going into my
pictures folder for whatever reason and I can’t figure out how to change this
location. In Internet Explorer I’m not seeing the usual open/save dialog box
but JAWS will only say view downloads when the information bar comes up. Can
anyone advise where to go and how to make the necessary changes. Hope this is
enough information for getting on with. Many thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Twitter issues

2015-02-06 Thread susan
Hi listers,
Am hoping someone can give me some help with Chicken Nugget. I’ve had it for
about three weeks but as of Wed. night it has suddenly stopped working. Instead
of being able to send and receive messages in the usual way, it seems that my
account/password is not recognized and any attempt to enter or change passwords
places me back in the authorize application loop. I attempted a system restore
without success and also reinstalled the program, but cannot see where to
reenter the original activation code etc., so not sure whether or not this is
the problem. I’ve also entered my iphone number into the account process but am
new to the iphone and haven’t properly set up Twitterific as yet, and am
generally confused about how all these apps handle the Twitter account itself,
but think the problem is more that Chicken Nugget does not recognize the
account than that I have set it up incorrectly. Anyway, in case this skirts the
purpose of the list I’d appreciate any feedback either on or off list,
especially if anyone else has seen this. Hope this all makes some sense. Tia.

[JAWS-Users] question about editing Winamp bookmarks

I’m using JAWS 12 and most recent version of Winamp, sorry I can’t quote it
offhand. Firstly, I thought I had installed the full free version of Winamp,
but am not completely sure and don’t know how to check. My main question,
however, is that when attempting to edit/delete a bookmarked stream I was
advised that the Winamp library needs to be installed Sure enough, I can’t find
any sign of the library in preferences or anywhere else I can think to look.
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Would it be best to reinstall
over the top of the current version or can I do some kind of repair, assuming
it isn’t just hidden or something? Hope this makes sense.

Re: [JAWS-Users] setting up/configuring speakers

2013-09-11 Thread susan

Jose,
I only have one soundcard so couldn't understand what the problem was. It
turns out to be a relatively simple fix which seems to have something to do
with the configuration of this case rather than the properties of the
soundcard. With a bit of experimentation, my son found that I could/should
keep speakers plugged into the rear audio jack and reserve the front jack
for headphone use rather than attempting to plug speakers into the front.
When I connect or disconnect phones windows obligingly provides me with a
status message, but in any case I don't have to mess with soundcard
properties. I'm not sure if this is a configuration unique to my system and
may not have explained the solution very well, but offer this as an option
to anyone else if this should unexpectedly happen to them. I'd be curious as
to whether anyone else has seen this and can explain why the jacks might not
be created equal. hth.

Hi listers,
i apologize for the novice question, but have reached the end of my
admittedly limited patience.

Quite simply, I'm running JAWS 12 on a Windows 7 system with a
Realtech HD soundcard. With my previous SB Live card in XP it was a
simple matter of plug and play to swap between headphones and speakers
but this does not seem to be the case now. While I generally work with
headphones, there are times when I wish to switch to speaker
configuration and would like instructions on how to do this. My
sighted husband is available in case of major disasters, but his usual
approach is to disable JAWS while stumbling toward whatever solution
and he is not particularly good at explaining his steps so that I can
learn them. In this situation he had configured the speakers
temporarily, but at reboot I was unable to bring up anything but
system sounds via speakers, though again headphones worked fine. I've
attempted to look around the audio manager and speakers dialogues but
still seem to be missing something, so step by step help would be
best. Many thanks.

but this does not seem to be the case now.

[JAWS-Users] setting up/configuring speakers

Hi listers,
i apologize for the novice question, but have reached the end of my
admittedly limited patience.

Quite simply, I'm running JAWS 12 on a Windows 7 system with a
Realtech HD soundcard. With my previous SB Live card in XP it was a
simple matter of plug and play to swap between headphones and speakers

Hello Susan, the major advantage of IE 9 and Google chrome is they have
HTML 5 support, if you require that support on IE 8 you can install chrome
framework over IE 8, this is a subset of Google chrome,
this does work well with JFW.

Hello Susan,

It sounds like you just need to change your typing echo setting. When you
go into the Quick Settings (verbosity) find the typing echo choice under
editing options and use spacebar until you have the setting you want to use.

Sorry I missed your message the other night. I'm glad to hear that you were
successful with Dectalk Express as I thought I'd heard that it didn't work

able to run Dectalk sounds easier than trying to wade through the FS site to
find the right bulletin for the instructions. My head tells me that the

enough, but I've made my share of stupid mistakes and don't want to break

of unloading JAWS, you can mute it by pressing JAWSkey+space and then

Hi Everyone,

On my previous XP system with an older version of TR, I either had to use

Besides the obvious solution of unloading JAWS, which I’d prefer not to do
unless absolutely necessary, is there a workaround for this problem? Will
Dectalk Express work with Windows 7 or is there a total Recorder driver
configuration that might be more feasible? I don’t understand a lot of the
help files about setting parameters or deciding which drivers I should use.
In fact, I’m not even sure which is installed as the default or how to

step by step directions, although my sighted son is an audio engineer who
will at least understand whatever feedback I get. Thank you for your

be able to undo an action and asking whether or not to continue. This happens
when I am doing a lot of editing, and I have even been told that there are too
many edits and need to close and reopen in order to continue. I think I have
the autorecovery settings to save automatically every ten minutes, but when
this other stuff starts happening I’m also getting popup messages that the
saves are temporarily canceled or something like that. Can anyone tell me what
might be going on and how to tweak this so I can work more efficiently? I
thought the office clipboard might be turned on but don’t know how to deal with
it. Any thoughts appreciated.

   Hi Steve and Dave,
Many thanks for your responses. The solution to my problem turned out to be
embarrassingly simple--I had forgotten to confirm my settings in gmail so
the imap settings weren't being recognized at the login prompt. Anyway, now
that I've synched up my account, what is the easiest way to clean up all the
old messages that migrated from the gmail server? I want to be sure that
Windows Live is not going to download all of them the next time I reopen it.
Also, what are the recommended settings to increase accessibility? For
example, I think I remember reading something about turning off the preview
and folder panes but can't quite find them. I'm still getting somewhat lost
within the program, especially with the ribbons.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] setting up Windows Live mail

Susan,

First, when you install the Livemail thing from Microsoft, as you run the
installer, there are about nine or so checkboxes at the beginning. These
determine which of the components you will be installing. If you don't want
anything else, then just uncheck all of them except for the mail program
itself.

Second, you have two choices here. When you install Gmail, when you run
Livemail, you can tell it your GMail address and it will automatically
configure that for you, but it will configure it as a Mapi email client.

If you want, you can set up Gmail manually instead. I'm going from memory
here, because our Windows Live Mail is the earlier version that doesn't have
the ribbons. In that version, accounts was under the Tools menu.

I think you need to go to the Office Ribbon with alt-h and look for
accounts. Or, it could be under the Options tab that you can access with
control-shift-o, but I am not certain about that. Microsoft says when you
open WLM, you click on Mail and then you will see accounts, for whatever
that's worth.

Once you find accounts, you do things in the same way that you did for
Outlook Express. On the first tab, you enter in your Gmail address,
password etc. Then, you go to the servers tab to specify the Gmail Pop3 and
SMTP. You will need to go to the advanced tab to specify the port numbers
and enable SSL checkboxes.

NOTE: Before you set up your email in Google Mail, you need to log-in to
Google Mail and check the radio button to enable Pop3.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

for some reason my Gmail password is not being accepted. I don't know
whether this is a problem with Comcast as my ISP or something about
gmail vs. microsoft. At this point I'm very confused about the
difference, if any, between Hotmail or Windows Live vs. live mail and
wonder whether it would be easier to enable Pop3 with a Microsoft
identity. At this point I've uninstalled Windows Live Essentials and
want to start from scratch because it was such a mess. By the way, is
there any place to go just to download the email client itself without
all the junk that Microsoft in its infinite wisdom wants to include?
Anyway, I would appreciate advice on this either on or off list at
susan.wojte...@gmail.com. Any assistance much appreciated.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] page change announcements in Word not being read

This question was asked on David's Blind-Computing list. Can anyone help
 Susan out?!

 Hi everyone,
In attempting to tweak settings in Word 2007, I'm finding that JAWS no
longer reads the change of page when in navigation or say all mode. I
thought at first that this was a JAWS issue but now think there is a
weird Word setting. Any advice on fixing this problem much
appreciated. Most of what I found in microsoft help had to do with
headers and footers or table of contents, not quite what I'm trying to
do. Also, using the classic XP margins as a default with single line
spacing, in Word 2003 page length equalled 46 lines but I'm not seeing
those results in 2007. Any thoughts?

Thanks for passing the message on. I did not get any response but in
the meantime have rebooted and done a system restore and started my

be working now.

[JAWS-Users] problem with JAWS 12 not reading in Word

2011-12-21 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Good morning everyone,
I'm pretty new to Office 2007, JAWS 12 and Windows 7, so hope yall
will be patient with me. i'm not used to working in print view and am
finding that with the above configuration JAWS will not read when I
navigate by word or character, though reading by line or larger units
seems to work. To clarify, I cannot read by word or character except
with the JAWS cursor and it does not seem to be tracking the PC cursor
fully accurately. Sometimes the PC cursor works when reading in
selection mode but not always. I have tried changing font and point
settings but am not sure if they are working or if JAWS is reporting
them correctly, so maybe step by step help with this would be good. By
the way, the above is occurring both with and without the virtual
ribbon enabled and i'm still trying to master the ribbon either way,
so you can see my frustration. Any help with this or general tips to
deal with Office 2007 much appreciated so I can actually learn this
thing. Tia.

[JAWS-Users] problem with Windows media player

2011-12-14 Thread Susan Wojtecki
Hi everyone,
Am hoping someone can help with this. I finally upgraded to a new PC
with Windows 7 running JAWS 12, WMP 12 and the latest version of
Winamp. I attempted to set Winamp as my default player for all audio
files and playing CDs. This seemed to work initially but now Windows
Media has begun grabbing files and I have been unable to find the
preferences dialog to change it. At this poingt I not only can't play
anything in Winamp but JAWS seems to lose focus whenever I try to go
into the file dialog and I can't access the preferences either. I'm
pretty sure I'm still on the classic skin but it's almost acting like
that is messed up as well. Any thoughts on fixing this much
appreciated. I'm not very comfortable with WMPand am new to current
JAWS as well as Windows 7, so the more detailed the instructions the
better. Would also like to know how MSSE compares to the paid
antivirus programs like Nod32 and whether anybody is using the user
account control without going insane. All help appreciated.

Right, I didn't mean a kit literally. My son has been checking reviews etc.
and is getting the parts from Newegg. He has put together a PC for himself
and has helped a few others, mmore a hobby than a professional sideline. I
don't know whether I'm saving all that much, but I trust his expertise and
think I have a system to last a long time. This is my first time not going
with a premade machine and I agree with Tim that it is not for everyone.

There is no actual kit to make a PC. You just buy all the parts from a
computer store or on-line like new egg or mwave.
Some retail stores will have some parts but not all, and most can be
bought cheap on-line.
Would caution here, if not knowing what your doing. Would get some one
that does, because there can be a bit to plug into.

 Jim,
Thanks for your response about the JAWS settings. The reason I'm
asking so specifically about individual programs is that my son will
essentially be putting together this PC from a kit so it will not have
the usual bloatware, which means that we are trying to remember what we
need to bring it up to speed. For example, it's my understanding that
Windows 7 will include Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer. Since
I'll likely have to download some things once I'm up and running, I
obviously need a web browser to do this and wanted to be sure I didn't
have to jump through a lot of hoops to get it. As to the email client to
use, I've tried both Outlook and Windows Live Mail ever so briefly but
not long enough to feel comfortable with either one. I will be getting
JAWS 12 next week and will have a few weeks to play with it before
purchasing and setting up the new PC, so maybe it is time to revisit
outlook. Again, I really appreciate your thoughts on all this and will
probably have more specific questions as I get further into this.

Steve and All,
Thanks for all the helpful comments on Windows live Mail. I actually have it
loaded onto this machine but have not gotten very far with it. I assume that
I installed or configured it incorrectly since OE attempts to come up
whenever I've gone into Windows Live, so I've decided to give it up until I
get the new PC. It seems to be causing some folks a lot of grief but
hopefully I will get past all that. In the meantime, I'm checking out any
hints and/or tutorials I can find to hopefully minimize the learning curve.

Steve,
What do you mean by the basic office program that you get with Windows? What
exactly does it include? i assume this is another of Microsoft's efforts to
help us do our computing tasks well? Anyway, I'm not sure what George meant
about Office 2007 being buggy with JAWS 11 but imagine it has to do with the
ribbon interface, which hopefully JAWS 12 will make easier. My husband is
already using Office 2007 so I will hopefully be able to install a copy on
his license. I feel i'm going to have a lot to learn at one time and it's
hard to anticipate how difficult it will be from other people's reports of
problems. Oh well, one day at a time I guess. I've been anticipating this
transition for about a year and have finally decided to take the plunge now
that I have the money saved rather than wait for this PC to die completely.

Ah. Don't believe everything you read.

Office 2007 works fine with either Jaws 11 or 12 on a Win 7 machine. The
Office 2010 programs that you install also should work, but the basic
version of Office 2010 that you get with every Win 7 pc won't work very
well because it is an ad-based free version that uses a web browser, so
Jaws can't script it.
