[JAWS-Users] JAWS and Windows Media Player

2009-02-07 Thread Jack
I hope no one minds, but I have a mild rant about JAWS 10 and Windows Media
Player. Specifically, how Jaws reads the list of tracks on a CD. Out of
all the versions of Jaws I've used, this one is the least user friendly when
it comes to the information provided from CD's track list. A couple
complaints.
1. Jaws doesn't read the track number. It only reads the title/artist
info.
2. As you arrow down the list of tracks, it does not announce the check
boxes that indicate what tracks havebeen extracted from the CD.
3. when ripping, Jaws will announce the current track being ripped over and
over again until it's done extracting that track. And hitting control
doesn't make it stop. I'm guessing that the current track being extracted
is flashing thus causing Jaws to announce it over and over again.
4. There is all kinds of useful info about the CD being extracted that's
shown in several columns in the Windows Media Player Primary list view
window. But for some unknown reason, Jaws will only read the information in
the first 2 columns. That being song title/artist. All the other columns
are ignored.
I've even gone into the options menu where it says, check the columns you
want visible. It doesn't make any difference. Jaws will only read the
first two columns. From left to right all the columns are,
album header bar, rip status header bar, title header bar, length header
bar, contributing artist header bar, composer header bar.

Now, you do have the ability to pick what columns you want visible, and in
what order you want them shown. But none of this makes any difference.
Jaws will only read the title/artist, and that is all.
Is there some setting in Jaws that I've overlooked to et it to see all these
headers? I've been using Jaws and WMP for 10 years. As far as Jaws is
concerned, this is the least user friendly version I've seen where windows
media player is concerned.
Sorry for the rather lengthy post. I hope that FS will address this in a
future release of Jaws.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about Spybot and Jaws

2009-02-07 Thread Chrissy

Hi josh,
I have used spybot for quite some time and found it to be working pretty
good for me.
When you install there is an option for blind users that simplifies some of
the operations so that it is more accsessible.I do not use the real time tee
timer protection option (you can unselect this when installing and I
recommend to do so). Instead I manually run the programm about once a week
to do the updates and scan.

What kind of connection do you have? Are the mini plug, or are they USB
headphones. Also, what is your operating system. My computer has a front
panel output for headphones. When I use it, the rear audio output is
turned
off. This is something I could change if I chose to, but I don't want
Jaws

Not sure if this is appropriate for this list, or if I should have put it on
Blind-computing, but here goes.

Once I get my new laptop, how to I check, with JAWS, the battery status so
that I know when it needs a charge?..For instance, on my PACMate, the
battery level is on the Today sceen...On my cell phone running Windows
Mobile with MobileSpeak, I just double-tap a section of the screen to get
the battery status.

Thanks.

OK, when you have the windows media player open, tab down until you hear,
rip button. Hit the space bar.
Now you have to tab until you hear, primary list view. There, you'll find
the list of tracks on the CD. But a word of caution, Jaws doesn't
announce

the check boxes. So pay attention to what you're unchecking.

When you put a new CD into the computer, windows media player has all the
tracks set to rip by default. if you can see the track list, you have to
hit the space bar on the ones you don't want. For some reason, these
past

couple versions of Jaws have been worse and worse with the track lists in
windows media player. But I'll save that for another time. But, one big
complaint of mine about Jaws 10 is that it doesn't even show the check
boxes
anymore.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws slow in starting/Vista

2009-02-07 Thread Jack
Hey All,

Has anyone running windows Vista and Jaws 10 noticed that it takes forever
for Jaws to launch aster the log-on windows sound? Now, I haven't really
narrowed it down to it being a Jaws issue. But after the log-on sound
plays, it takes a full minute before I hear Jaws start speaking. I've had
someone sighted here, and the screen to enter my password is there as it
should be. I'm just waiting for Jaws to load. It seems that there's a lot
of movement with the hard drive before Jaws comes up. It wasn't like this
in Jaws 9. But then I've also recently purchased a new printer/scanner, so
maybe there are drivers being loaded from that. What I do know is this,
between the log on sound, and Jaws speaking, it can take a full minute.
I'm not real familiar with messing with my start menu, so I don't want to
bother it unless I know what I'm doing.

OK, so here's where I'm uninformed. Aside from having to type in my

2009-02-07 Thread Annette Carr
I am not understanding what you are doing with the 2 rows or columns Maybe
it is just too early in the morning for me to be reading your explanation.

Do you have headers at the top of each column? If so how many columns wide
is your information?

How many rows of data do you have?

Is the information for each record contained to one row, or is it stored on
2 or more rows for each record?

If I understand you correctly, you have information stored in an Excel
spreadsheet. Each row is one complete record. You want to sort/arrange
 the
rows by the information you have stored in Column F. If this is correct,
 you can do the following:

Move your cursor to the first row of data in column F, or if you have a
header row, place the cursor on the header for Column F.

From the menu bar open the Data menu and navigate to sort. I think it is
 the first item.

A dialog box will open. JAWS 8 and 9 act a bit odd when reading some of
 the
 fields in this dialog box.

You will be able to select the column you want to sort on. You will
 either
see the header names or the column letter. Hopefully by placing your
 cursor
on the header of column F, you will see the columns names instead of the
 letters.

Sometimes you have to tab away from a field and back again in this dialog
box to hear what is in it.

There are a few other fields you can change that will effect your sort.
Just let me know if you need help figuring any of these out.

 HTH,
 Annette

[JAWS-Users] help!. problems reading chat messages in skype

2009-02-07 Thread Andrés felipe Pulgarín
Hey friends, I'm having difficulties reading a chat message in skype.
I installed the scripts for skype 3.8 but unfortunately I get the next
message: unknown script function called say a chat line. I don't know
if that is the message exactly but jaws read this when I press alt 1,
alt 2, alt3, etc etc. What can I do?
Thanks, Andres

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws reads subject line twice

2009-02-07 Thread Jack
Hi Fred,
I've also noticed something similar to what you're saying. When I open an
email, then hit the arrow up, after it reads the first line of text, it says
the name and email address from the sender a second time, then continues on
with the rest of the email. Again. I've not seen this prior to Jaws 10.

Is your computer plug connected? If so it probably won't work. Unplug the
computer either from the wall or just remove the plug from the rear of the
machine, wait a moment then try and see if it is announced. It should
work.

I have no idea why it won't read when the mains power is applied but it
doesn't seem to.

Are you saying if it's in the system tray then these keys, shift-jaws

If so then why is it not working over here being as my battery is in the

Mine says that all of the time if the power cord is connected or if the
power meter is not set up to show in the system tray.

Try JawsKey + F11. Jaws should say:

Select a system tray icon.

Arrow down and listen for anything that mentions battery status. It may
say plugged in or may say some percentage and charging but if it isn't
there then the Jaws + Shift + B won't work and you will have to go into
your control panel, find power and see if you can find an option to
show it in the system tray.

Hope this helps.

Not sure if this is appropriate for this list, or if I should have put
it on

Blind-computing, but here goes.

Once I get my new laptop, how to I check, with JAWS, the battery status
so

that I know when it needs a charge?..For instance, on my PACMate, the
battery level is on the Today sceen...On my cell phone running Windows
Mobile with MobileSpeak, I just double-tap a section of the screen to
get

the battery status.

Thanks.

Try JawsKey + F11. Jaws should say:

Arrow down and listen for anything that mentions battery status. It may
say plugged in or may say some percentage and charging but if it isn't

Hi Jack,
I didn't say that you hadn't written them,
my point was that as the guidelines clearly state,
if you have a problem with FS, or, rant, as you say,
then take it up with them instead of posting it here.
This particular aspect of the thread is done.
If you want to discuss it further, you have my e-mail address to contact me

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Windows Media Player

Re: [JAWS-Users] I have missedthis answer about email outlook express

2009-02-07 Thread Brian Lee

Hi Karen,

Here is the answer that I sent to the list a couple days ago. Hopefully,
this is what you are referring to.

You might consider using the hide read messages choice in the current view
submenu. When you open the folder only unread messages will be listed. You
can easily switch back to the show all messages choice when you want to.
Use Alt-V to bring up the view menu. find the current view choice by using
up or down arrow keys, use right arrow to move into the list of choices for
the current view and then up or down arrow keys to find the various choices.
You can also use CTRL-U to move between unread messages in a list.

Take care.

power meter is not set up to show in the system tray.

Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel sorting summarizing

2009-02-07 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Hi Annette,
I just used our names as an example to demonstrate my problem.
I guess what I meant is that my name appears in rows 100 times in column f
and your name appears on 100 rows in column f. So I believe if I sort on
column f all ann rows will be together and 100 rows annette would be
together. If I could drop duplicates or summarize on column f then I would
have 1 row for Ann and 1 row for Annette.
I sort of found something for Excel 2003 in data, filter, advanced filter,
drop duplicate records, but it did not work as I thought it would. I'll
try again later or tomorrow. I find when I walk away from something and go
back to it later I usually solve problem.
But thank you for your suggestion. Even the sort on column did not work for
column f.
The real data in column F is an IP address because I am tracking the
c:\windows\PFirewall.Log file because I thought I had a hacker on my PC.
Long story but this sighted person had access to my desktop inside my home.
I blocked exceptions in Windows firewall, changed passwords on DSL, modem,
banks. I added passwords to all sensitive documents on my PC. So I thought
this file if sorted and summarized would go from about 37,000 rows down to
about 100 or less. I then could do research on IP addresses. It is just my
way of trying to investigate. I have AVG Free edition 8.0 and Super
AntiSpyware software installed.
I'll let you know if I succeed. I am uncertain if I could even research
these 100 IP address. Most IP addresses are mine or ones that I know about.

Hope this makes sense.
Ann

If I understand you correctly, you have information stored in an Excel
spreadsheet. Each row is one complete record. You want to sort/arrange
the
rows by the information you have stored in Column F. If this is
correct,

you can do the following:

Move your cursor to the first row of data in column F, or if you have a
header row, place the cursor on the header for Column F.

From the menu bar open the Data menu and navigate to sort. I think it
is

the first item.

A dialog box will open. JAWS 8 and 9 act a bit odd when reading some of
the

You will be able to select the column you want to sort on. You will
either
see the header names or the column letter. Hopefully by placing your

on the header of column F, you will see the columns names instead of the
letters.

Sometimes you have to tab away from a field and back again in this
dialog

box to hear what is in it.

There are a few other fields you can change that will effect your sort.
Just let me know if you need help figuring any of these out.

Hi Karen,

Here is the answer that I sent to the list a couple days ago. Hopefully,
this is what you are referring to.

You might consider using the hide read messages choice in the current
view
submenu. When you open the folder only unread messages will be listed.
You

can easily switch back to the show all messages choice when you want to.
Use Alt-V to bring up the view menu. find the current view choice by using
up or down arrow keys, use right arrow to move into the list of choices
for
the current view and then up or down arrow keys to find the various
choices.

You can also use CTRL-U to move between unread messages in a list.

Take care.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel sorting summarizing

2009-02-07 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Hi I apologize for all the confusion.
In this example there are 100 rows of Ann and 100 rows for Annette.
The name Ann or Annette is in column f, comprising 200 records.
After sorting on column f, all rows for Ann are together from a1:f100.
So the first 100 rows have info for Ann in column F
Followed by next 100 rows for Annette from a101 to f200.
The duplication of rows is triggered by name Ann or Annette located in
column F.
If Excel can get rid of duplicates based on info in column 6 which is name
Ann or Annette then only 1 row would be created for Ann and 1 row for
Annette.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel sorting summarizing

2009-02-07 Thread Patricia Dunbar
I'm wondering if you might have to do that manually removing the
rows/columns yourself.

I remember doing some sorting by names and Excel was picky on how the names
were written separated by a comma with the last name first, it didn't seem
to work on first names. I haven't done it in many years though and I used
Office 2000 back then and I'm using 2003 now which probably isn't much
difference.
But I wondered if it was too much trouble to select the rows you didn't want
and delete them or maybe you've already done this.
I use Excel some doing very basic stuff and I might be way off base here in
what you need to do.
Then I wondered if the find and replace feature worked in Excel same as for
Word. Maybe that would solve this problem for you in regards to
duplications?

Well if you sorted on the column where the names are stored, you would have
all of each name grouped together. I've not had much with filters, and I've
never worked with the delete duplicate feature. I usually just manually
delete the rows I do not want.

Hi Annette,
I just used our names as an example to demonstrate my problem.

Hi I apologize for all the confusion.
In this example there are 100 rows of Ann and 100 rows for Annette.
The name Ann or Annette is in column f, comprising 200 records.
After sorting on column f, all rows for Ann are together from a1:f100.
So the first 100 rows have info for Ann in column F Followed by next 100
rows for Annette from a101 to f200.
The duplication of rows is triggered by name Ann or Annette located in
column F.
If Excel can get rid of duplicates based on info in column 6 which is name
Ann or Annette then only 1 row would be created for Ann and 1 row for
Annette.

If I understand you correctly, you have information stored in an
Excel spreadsheet. Each row is one complete record. You want to
sort/arrange the rows by the information you have stored in Column
 F. If this is correct, you can do the following:

Move your cursor to the first row of data in column F, or if you
have a header row, place the cursor on the header for Column F.

From the menu bar open the Data menu and navigate to sort. I think
it is
 the first item.

A dialog box will open. JAWS 8 and 9 act a bit odd when reading
some of the fields in this dialog box.

You will be able to select the column you want to sort on. You
will either see the header names or the column letter. Hopefully
by placing your cursor on the header of column F, you will see the
columns names instead of the letters.

Sometimes you have to tab away from a field and back again in this
dialog box to hear what is in it.

There are a few other fields you can change that will effect your sort.

Well if you sorted on the column where the names are stored, you would
have
all of each name grouped together. I've not had much with filters, and
I've

never worked with the delete duplicate feature. I usually just manually
delete the rows I do not want.

Hi Annette,
I just used our names as an example to demonstrate my problem.
I guess what I meant is that my name appears in rows 100 times in column f
and your name appears on 100 rows in column f. So I believe if I sort on
column f all ann rows will be together and 100 rows annette would be
together. If I could drop duplicates or summarize on column f then I
would

have 1 row for Ann and 1 row for Annette.
I sort of found something for Excel 2003 in data, filter, advanced filter,
drop duplicate records, but it did not work as I thought it would. I'll
try again later or tomorrow. I find when I walk away from something and
go

back to it later I usually solve problem.
But thank you for your suggestion. Even the sort on column did not work
for

column f.
The real data in column F is an IP address because I am tracking the
c:\windows\PFirewall.Log file because I thought I had a hacker on my PC.
Long story but this sighted person had access to my desktop inside my
home.

I blocked exceptions in Windows firewall, changed passwords on DSL, modem,
banks. I added passwords to all sensitive documents on my PC. So I
thought

this file if sorted and summarized would go from about 37,000 rows down to
about 100 or less. I then could do research on IP addresses. It is just
my

way of trying to investigate. I have AVG Free edition 8.0 and Super
AntiSpyware software installed.
I'll let you know if I succeed. I am uncertain if I could even research
these 100 IP address. Most IP addresses are mine or ones that I know
about.

Hope this makes sense.
Ann

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Windows Media Player

2009-02-07 Thread Jack
OK, my apologies for the rant. So, allow me to rephrase my post. There are
something like 13 columns that are visible when ripping an audio CD with
media player 11. Jaws only recognizes 2 of those tabs. Those being the
song title and artist name. In previous versions of Jaws, more of these
columns were visible. Is there some trick to getting Jaws to recognize the
other columns?

Hi Jack,
I didn't say that you hadn't written them,
my point was that as the guidelines clearly state,
if you have a problem with FS, or, rant, as you say,
then take it up with them instead of posting it here.
This particular aspect of the thread is done.
If you want to discuss it further, you have my e-mail address to contact me

For all members, help will come quicker if it is in the form of a question,
and not as a rant,

Hi Jack,
If you would like to see FS address this issue,
then why don't you aim this message to them?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS and Windows Media Player
