Re: [JAWS-Users] email servers with jaws
Jaws doesn't interact directly with a mail server, so technically it works equally well with all of them. Jaws interacts with the mail program you're using. If you're running Vista, Windows Mail works quite well with Jaws. I didn't start using Thunderbird until I got my Windows 10 computer, but that's what I'm using to compose this message. I think Thunderbird would be a good option on a Vista computer using Jaws 17. Both Thunderbird and Windows Mail support POP3 and IMAP servers which are pretty standard for all providers, including Yahoo, Gmail, etc. Jeff On 3/18/2017 8:33 AM, maconc...@yahoo.com wrote: i'm getting tired of yahoo mail, and would like to know what other servers does jaws work good on. jaws 17, vista For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

I'm running later versions of Windows and JAWS (Win 10 and JAWS 18) and just updated Thunderbird to version 52. It's working fine for me, but here's a couple of things for you to try. First, you may have already restarted your computer, but if not, that's always a good thing to try. Re: [JAWS-Users] convert html to css
HTML stands for hypertext markup language and CSS stands for cascading style sheet. You cannot "convert" HTML to CSS -- they are two separate things and perform different functions. You can add CSS to your HTML document to effect its style, such as font sizes, colors, etc. AS far as writing HTML without CSS being hard work, that's not the case. It's actually extra work to add the CSS, but if you want to control the "look" of your HTML document, you need to use CSS. However, you don't convert or get rid of your hypertext markup, you just add a style sheet to define the style and format of your document. [JAWS-Users] Stopping audio playback on web pages
I can't remember which list I saw this on and I can't find the message, so I hope someone here can answer this question for me. Some websites (such as CNET) play audio files when the page is loaded and I can't find any way to stop this audio. I'd like to find a way to do it using Internet Explorer, but what I read somewhere is that there is no way in IE, but there is a key combination in Firefox to do it. Can someone please refresh my memory with this key combination? Thanks, Jeff For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[JAWS-Users] JAWS misreads text
I'm experiencing a problem with JAWS that's rather annoying. As I arrow around in an edit field, JAWS sometimes reads the character or line it just moved off of rather than the character/line that is selected. This doesn't happen with every arrow movement, but often enough to be annoying. Is there anything I can do about this? This happens in various apps. In fact, as I think about it, I'm not sure it even needs to be in an edit field as such. This may happen on a web page when I'm using the virtual cursor, for instance. Re: [JAWS-Users] What program should be used to read a .doc document? Try WordPad.
I'm running Windows 10 Anniversary edition. Wordpad didn't work very well for me. It didn't seem to translate everything properly. By that, I mean that there were some characters/symbols that were left in the document. Specifically in the example I tried, there was a backslash (\) character at the beginning of some lines. Also, I'm not sure how the document might have looked in Word, but the formatting seemed unlikely. All the text was strung together with no logical line breaks or blank lines. Perhaps I just don't know how to use Wordpad, so if this is the case, some instructions on how to configure Wordpad would be appreciated. Otherwise, are there any other suggestions for free programs to access Word documents? Adrian, actually, .doc was not in the list, but .docx was in the list, and it's a .docx file I'm trying to read. Wordpad does open the file, but it's got these backslashes at the beginning of some lines. My assumption is that those are some form of formatting code that isn't being interpreted properly by Wordpad. Re: [JAWS-Users] [jaws] creating a gmail email account
Well, according to gmail help, they do support POP3, (Rick's instructions are from the support page) but it's not the default. You must go into gmail settings and enable POP3. However, I still maintain that IMAP is a better option. I don't use Outlook, so I'm not familiar with their error messages, but that doesn't sound like a proper account, although that might just be a name given to the account. The actual account ID should be your full gmail email address. Jeff On 5/24/2017 7:33 PM, Dialup@56k wrote: Actually, I don't think g mail uses POP these days, could be wrong. Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions
I like Toshiba. I currently have a Lenovo that I like very much. I would *strongly* disagree with the comment that a macbook is the best Windows laptop. Apple hardware is *way* overpriced. You could probably buy 2 Windows laptops for the price of a macBook. I think more importantly than the brand is what is inside. I prefer Intel over AMD. This Lenovo laptop has 8 GB of ram and a 250 GB SSD. I really, really like having an SSD. Everything is so fast. I just plug in an external 1 TB drive for additional data storage. It's all very fast. I also use an external wireless USB keyboard, so I didn't mind that the laptop keyboard didn't include a keypad. My laptop also has bluetooth, so that would be an option, but I've not used a bluetooth keyboard with my laptop. I have connected bluetooth headphones, though. As far as getting rid of bloatware is concerned, I understand the next version of Windows will have an option to install a fresh copy of Windows built right in. If I recall correctly, it's called Windows Refresh or something like that. It downloads a fresh copy of Windows and does a complete reinstall, keeping only some of the built-in Windows apps. All other apps and programs are removed, getting rid of all bloatware. I think this is the best idea Microsoft has had since they launched Windows. I know if I were buying a new computer, the first thing I'd do is bring it home and run a Windows Refresh, giving me a nice clean Windows to begin setting up. Hope this helps. Thanks to everyone who responded. I did get the solution in a private email. Here's what worked: Click the accessibility setup assistant. In the setup assistant do the following: click next until you find read single page... set this to read entire document. then click next until you see open in web browser and uncheck it. then click next and finally finish. Both of these items needed adjustment. The values above were not the defaults. I can now read my document, but it did take quite a while to load the document. It's over 100 pages. Judy, Here's how I did it. Find the Accessibility submenu under the Edit menu. Right-arrow to open the Accessibility submenu and arrow to the Setup Assistant then press enter. That will launch the wizard that we've been discussing in this thread. I just accepted the defaults the first time through, but it didn't work for me, so Randy suggested that I change the options to load the entire document and turn off the option to open in the web browser. Later, someone posted that opening a page at a time was sometimes better, so perhaps my only problem was the web browser option, but I've not tried changing the loading option back to a page at a time. Re: [JAWS-Users] I7 and I5, Does it really makes any difference for jaws users?
I agree with Steve. It's been my experience that amount of memory makes a more noticeable difference in performance than does the processor when talking about multitasking those sorts of tasks. I've also found that having an SSD makes a huge difference in speed of almost everything. Of course, none of these things will improve Internet sluggishness, but loading programs and switching tasks is much snappier with my 8 GB of memory and my SSD. And I have an I5 sixth generation processor. Jeff On 7/23/2017 11:18 AM, Steve wrote: I doubt that in itself would make much difference. You have other issues to consider: First, amount of memory. For example, I must wait about 20 seconds or so after inserting the card before I can arrow up and down to locate a folder. Re: [JAWS-Users] Temporary loss of speech
It's not a lack of RAM. I have plenty. And the app is File Explorer which behaves normally accessing all other drives. The problem is only with the SD card. Jeff On 11/12/2017 11:10 AM, john_just...@verizon.net wrote: This temporary loss of Jaws speech seems to be quite common when involving software which uses a lot of RAM. Here's another interesting observation. I have created shortcut keys for loading Jaws and other reading software. During that temporary silence, using the shortcut key for Jaws (CONTROL+ALT+J) doesn't work for restarting jaws. This is a bit out of my league but could it have something to do with not enough RAM in the system? If so, that would be a surprise to me. My new desktop at work has 18 gig of RAM. Re: [JAWS-Users] Recurring problem: JAWS not speaking at logon screen after Windows 10 updates
I don't have an answer for you regarding the problem, other than to echo someone else's comment that a recent JAWS 18 update supposedly addresses this issue. I can offer a work-around, however. You can configure Windows 10 to automatically log into a specified default user account. This bypasses the login screen and JAWS comes up talking. I don't recall the steps to accomplish this, but if it's an alternative you want to consider, Let us know and I'm sure someone can find the info for you. I'm seeking input regarding a recurring problem that I'm experiencing when Windows 10 updates have taken place. Whenever there has been a Windows 10 update, JAWS does not speak at the logon screen. I cannot tell when the logon screen appears and when it is ready to receive my Windows password. I cannot tell if anything is happening if I do enter something and try to TAB to the OK button. Needless to say, this makes logging on to my PC impossible at these times without sighted assistance. My husband who is sighted has helped me deal wit this. We have called the Microsoft Accessible Help line. They said that somehow JAWS gets corrupted when there are Windows 10 updates, and that we should uninstall and reinstall JAWS making sure to set JAWS to speak at the logon screen. Doing those things solves the problem until another Windows 10 update occurs. There was a Windows 10 update recently. We will need to go through the process of uninstalling and reinstalling JAWS for the thirdtime. I'm wondering if others among you have experienced these difficulties. I'm also wondering if there is a newer version of JAWS that does not have this problem with Windows 10 updates. I've read of so many problems with JAWS 2018 that I'm hesitant to upgrade to it at this point. I don't know how someone without sighted assistance would deal with the frustrations that Ihave described. Repeatedly waiting around for sighted help to fix a recurring problem such as this shouldn't be acceptable. As a comment, I want to also say that I'm finding the discussion of screen readers and web browsers interesting. I admit that having to become skilled using different screen readers and web browsers, and to keep assessing which screen reader/web browser combination works with various websites is very discouraging. I use Internet Explorer. Even the NY Times is crashing more now than it did previously. I usually get done what I need to but I admit that I'm definitely less technically adept than many of you. Re: [JAWS-Users] Folders in Thunderbird
Well, this might depend somewhat on your View settings, but one important key is F6. In some mail programs (e.g., Windows Mail) you use the tab key to toggle between folder view and list view. With Thunderbird, you use the F6 key for this purpose. In the View menu, you might prefer the Classic Layout. Also in the Layout option of the View menu, you will probably want to have the Folder pane checked. If you have multiple accounts, you might like to switch the Folder view to the Universal view. This will combine the Inbox, Sent items, Deleted items and Junk items for all of your accounts in a single folder respectively. This is probably my favorite feature of Thunderbird, since I monitor several email accounts. Hope this helps. Jeff On 4/19/2018 12:09 PM, jerry martin wrote: Afternoon all. The status line should display both new and total messages in the selected folder. At least, that's how it works for me. So you can use insert-pagedown to read the status line. [JAWS-Users] Questions about Chrome
First, is there a reader mode in Chrome? If so, how is it activated? Also, is there a keyboard shortcut to silence or mute a video that automatically plays on a web page? e.g., When I click on a tweet from CNN, it opens a web page and automatically begins playing a video. I just want to read the article. Is this possible? Thanks, Jeff For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
Re: [JAWS-Users] interesting thoughts/finding about CPU speeds, temperature and JAWS
This is an interesting thread. The mention of laptops overheating and shutting down especially caught my attention. I thought I might be the only person in the world experiencing this problem, but I have 2 different laptops from different manufacturers which both exhibit this problem whenever they are called upon to do some real work, e.g., checking for Windows updates or scanning for viruses. I get nervous anytime I hear the fan ramp up and it's a constant frustration for me. I fail to understand why manufacturers design laptops this way. Why don't they back off the processing rather than shut down the computer? Is it that I have the power settings incorrectly configured? If so, can someone please tell me how to configure my laptop to avoid these shutdowns? I've not done much with the power settings. I've just left them at their defaults. Honestly, I don't know what most of those settings mean, so I've been reluctant to mess with them. Reading this thread convinces me there are some knowledgeable folks on this list who might be able to help me out with this issue. If you can, I'd be ever so grateful. Thanks, Jeff On 6/26/2018 2:55 PM, JM Casey wrote: Hello Aaron. Thanks for writing all that. I believe I understand, mostly. It's not a laptop, but a desktop machine. So, no battery. I've only really experienced overheat problems with laptops, but you might indeed be right about the components. Still, my girlfriend's laptop keeps shutting down for precisely this reason. Yes, I understand what you mean about it being ridiculous to have the computer operating at maximum clock when it doesn't need to. I suppose that is the whole point of "throttling". I think you gave me a clue as to why, even though I thought I had set the plan back to "balanced", the speed according to several diagnostics was still hanging around 3500 to 4100 mhz. I'm still trying to understand exactly how the power plans function. I was wondering about the processor state and what exactly I ought to do with it, if anything. I should probably leave the max at 100%; right now the minimum is 5% and, based on what you described, I think this should be ok. It's also worth noting that the fans in my PC did need a serious cleaning. My builder guy is always asking me to check the temps on my computer but I just figured that's the kind of guy he is and never bothered on a regular basis. I take it most people usually don't, until their computer starts acting weird or shutting itself off at high temperatures. I also realised how much of a drain JAWS + Vocalizer was on my system. I told him that now that I'm back on Eloquence, the difference is basically night and day. This system more than meets the listed requirements but the performance hit, now that I can actually see (and hear) the difference, was drastic. He doesn't really understand this, but he's never had to use or bother with a screen-reader himself; I believe he thinks it's a lot more basic than it actually is. Cheers and thanks for giving my message some thought. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Valiant8086 Sent: June 25, 2018 8:10 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] interesting thoughts/finding about CPU speeds, temperature and JAWS Hi. Try putting it back on balanced. You don't have a battery do you? there's no battery icon? If you do have such an icon, you should be able to press space on the icon in the system tray and you'll have a left right slider you can use to adjust the cpu's power consumption for better battery, better performance or best performance. You would want to see if you're on better performance. If not, selecting that will make the cpu spend more time clocked up, and be more eager to clock up to complete tasks, but won't force it to stand right at the max clock continuously. Btw, having the cpu stay that hot just cause it's running at max clock even if it remains under light load is rather ridiculous. Also, I'd be more worried about high temps like that in a desktop than I would a laptop. Desktop components may not handle high temps as handily as a laptop who's components are all likely built with higher temps in mind e.g. hdds. If you don't have a power icon tip you can get it to appear by plugging in a UPS that will support opperation with no drivers, it should appear as a battery and turn the platform role over to mobile. Lastly, you could experiment with minimum and maximum processor state. 1. open power options windows key+x, then o. 2. tab around to additional power settings link, hit that 3. tab a whole bunch of times to change power settings for the high performance power plan link, or what ever plan it is that you have now. Hit space on that. 4. Find the changed advanced power settings for the high performance power plan button, you may land right on it. Hit space on that. 5. in the resulting dialogue you'll be in a list of power plans, you'll probably b

Thanks for the suggestions. I saved your previous email, so I'll go back and take a look at that. One of the computers is running Vista, the other is running Windows 7 and neither have been reformatted, so the driver issue is unlikely. Plus, the Windows 7 computer had the problem from day one, even when not running JAWS or any screen reader. It was my sighted wife's computer and it would shut down sometimes while she was watching Netflix. She got so frustrated, she quit using the Windows computer altogether. She does everything on her iPad now. I have no idea what the temperatures are. I'll have to go find one of those programs that lets me check those values. Thanks again for the suggestions. It would climb all the way up to 220 degrees. If it hit 221, *click*. What happens here is likely what I believe you refer to as a target junction or tj max for short. It's a max temp the cpu tollerates, if it reaches that, it abruptly powers off. The system should be employing throttling to prevent the cpu from reaching this point but it sounds like your laptops don't bother. TJ max varries, most modern core i processors like 212, intel atom processors were 198 or so, and btw I always speak in terms of degrees f, not celsius. So, I can think of two possibilities at this point. First is that the manufacturers of those machines assumed those machines would never potentially reach tj max while stressed and running at full wattage for ever. If that's the explanation that works, then your solution is to figure out why they do have that potential now. If the exhaust fans are getting clogged a few squirts of compressed air out of a can, not an air compressor may do the trick. I don't recommend an air compressor because it may blow rust or water along with the air and that delicate little fan in there could do without either of those. The other possibility is that the systems were in fact originally designed with software and drivers that would employ speed stepping or some other variation to do exactly what you said, throttle back the cpu when it is approaching tj max. That could probably be fixed by installing a missing system driver. If you've ever clean formatted the system this may be the problem. I suppose it might also be possible that an upgrade to windows 10, even if it was already on windows 10, accidentally nuked a driver that took care of this. I believe that usually the bios takes control of this when the OS doesn't, or doesn't even allow the OS to control it, but I'm also sure it's possible for that to be different. A really old Acer Aspire 3000+ laptop I had way back in the early 2000s used an AMD simpron 1.8ghz processor. It ran really hot all the time. On day I somehow discovered that I was missing a chipset driver or some software package like that which I never apparently installed after reformatting the system early on. That helped make it run a lot cooler, this was before I was into watching clock speeds with core temp and such. You could try setting the max processor state lower and see if your laptops run cooler, a previous email of mine in this thread explains that process. Lastly, you could run core temp and minimize it to try and check it frequently while you attempt to stress the laptops and see what temps are being realized, if they're staying reasonable but powering off then there's probably a different issue at play Cheers: Aaron Spears, A.K.A. valiant8086. [JAWS-Users] Disabling sticky keys
I'm using the latest version of JAWS 2018 on a Windows 10 computer. When I press the right-shift key to skim through a document in say-all mode, a dialog pops up if I press the key too many times quickly. How do I disable this action? It's very annoying. Re: [JAWS-Users] Disabling sticky keys
Thanks for the suggestion, but that checkbox was not checked. However, there was a link to setup sticky keys and when I clicked that a dialog came up where I could uncheck the checkbox to activate sticky keys with 5 quick presses of the shift key. So, your instructions got me to the right section, but one more step was needed.
