Re: [JAWS-Users] email servers with jaws

2017-03-18 Thread Audiobookfan
Jaws doesn't interact directly with a mail server, so technically it
works equally well with all of them. Jaws interacts with the mail
program you're using.

If you're running Vista, Windows Mail works quite well with Jaws. I
didn't start using Thunderbird until I got my Windows 10 computer, but
that's what I'm using to compose this message. I think Thunderbird would
be a good option on a Vista computer using Jaws 17. Both Thunderbird and
Windows Mail support POP3 and IMAP servers which are pretty standard for
all providers, including Yahoo, Gmail, etc.

I'm running later versions of Windows and JAWS (Win 10 and JAWS 18) and
just updated Thunderbird to version 52. It's working fine for me, but
here's a couple of things for you to try.

First, you may have already restarted your computer, but if not, that's
always a good thing to try.

Also, when I have had trouble reading the list view, I've found that
checking the View menu sometimes helps. Try the Sort by, Threads and

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] convert html to css

2017-04-08 Thread Audiobookfan
HTML stands for hypertext markup language and CSS stands for cascading
style sheet.

You cannot "convert" HTML to CSS -- they are two separate things and
perform different functions. You can add CSS to your HTML document to
effect its style, such as font sizes, colors, etc.

AS far as writing HTML without CSS being hard work, that's not the case.
It's actually extra work to add the CSS, but if you want to control the
"look" of your HTML document, you need to use CSS. However, you don't
convert or get rid of your hypertext markup, you just add a style sheet
to define the style and format of your document.

CSS code is instruction code defining how html code will look / behave.
They are two, although related, separate entities.
You MIGHT be able to write html without CSS but it would be hard work

[JAWS-Users] Stopping audio playback on web pages

2017-04-27 Thread Audiobookfan
I can't remember which list I saw this on and I can't find the message,
so I hope someone here can answer this question for me.

Some websites (such as CNET) play audio files when the page is loaded
and I can't find any way to stop this audio. I'd like to find a way to
do it using Internet Explorer, but what I read somewhere is that there
is no way in IE, but there is a key combination in Firefox to do it. Can
someone please refresh my memory with this key combination?

[JAWS-Users] JAWS misreads text

I'm running Windows 10 Anniversary edition. Wordpad didn't work very
well for me. It didn't seem to translate everything properly. By that, I
mean that there were some characters/symbols that were left in the

All the text was strung together with no logical line breaks or blank

Perhaps I just don't know how to use Wordpad, so if this is the case,
some instructions on how to configure Wordpad would be appreciated.
Otherwise, are there any other suggestions for free programs to access

Hi Jo,

You need MS Word to open this file. The file extension, .doc, is the
old file extension for MS Word prior to Word 2007, & possibly 2003,
but I'm not sure about 2003. If you have a newer version of Word

read, & edit older files from older Office versions.

If you need to know how to assign a program to open this file, now
this is a totally different set of steps. First we need to know if
you have Office installed, & possibly what operating system you're

Actually, Judy's suggestion to copy the content to Notepad worked. The

formatting code that isn't being interpreted properly by Wordpad. My
concern is that if Wordpad isn't interpreting these codes properly, what
else might it not be doing properly? What else might I encounter in
other .docx files? I suppose it's possible that these are intentional
and they appear the same in the file opened in Word, but it sure doesn't
seem likely.

Actually, Judy's suggestion to copy the content to Notepad worked. The
backslashes didn't transfer over. I suppose this is an acceptable
work-around, at least until it doesn't work.

The way to eliminate them is to search for backslash and replace either

I'm not clear what you mean when you say these steps don't work for you.

Those steps did not work for me. For one thing, the "wordpad" file type
included rtf, docx, txt, etc. Again, when I opened the file, there were
the backslash characters at the beginning of several of the lines.

Is it possible that this file can only be opened by Word? Is there no way
to access these files without obtaining the Word program?

That exact same thing happened to me. The solution proved to be the

Open WordPad, and press control + o to open the file directory system.
Tab to the file type combo box, then arrow up or down to the format
you want to open, e.g. a .doc or .docx Word document. Press enter on
the appropriate line.

Next, press shift + tab to get to the list of folders/files that are
in your computer as the default folder for document files.

Arrow to the file you want, press enter.

The results should now be more in line with the original .doc or .docx
file.

Important tip! Be sure to check that file type combo box every time
you open WordPad. The default setting, for example, is only for
WordPad documents. You need to arrow down to the very end of the list
(or use the end key), and there is the all-files filter, the only one
that will show you all the files and folders on your computer.

Best of luck, and hope the above helps.

I'm running Windows 10 Anniversary edition. Wordpad didn't work very
well for me. It didn't seem to translate everything properly. By that,
I mean that there were some characters/symbols that were left in the
document.
Specifically in the example I tried, there was a backslash (\)

All the text was strung together with no logical line breaks or blank

Perhaps I just don't know how to use Wordpad, so if this is the case,

Otherwise, are there any other suggestions for free programs to access

Well, according to gmail help, they do support POP3, (Rick's
instructions are from the support page) but it's not the default. You
must go into gmail settings and enable POP3. However, I still maintain
that IMAP is a better option.

I don't use Outlook, so I'm not familiar with their error messages, but
that doesn't sound like a proper account, although that might just be a

Re: [JAWS-Users] laptop questions

2017-06-14 Thread Audiobookfan
I like Toshiba. I currently have a Lenovo that I like very much. I would
*strongly* disagree with the comment that a macbook is the best Windows
laptop. Apple hardware is *way* overpriced. You could probably buy 2
Windows laptops for the price of a macBook.

I think more importantly than the brand is what is inside. I prefer
Intel over AMD. This Lenovo laptop has 8 GB of ram and a 250 GB SSD. I
really, really like having an SSD. Everything is so fast. I just plug in
an external 1 TB drive for additional data storage. It's all very fast.

I also use an external wireless USB keyboard, so I didn't mind that the
laptop keyboard didn't include a keypad. My laptop also has bluetooth,
so that would be an option, but I've not used a bluetooth keyboard with
my laptop. I have connected bluetooth headphones, though.

As far as getting rid of bloatware is concerned, I understand the next
version of Windows will have an option to install a fresh copy of
Windows built right in. If I recall correctly, it's called Windows
Refresh or something like that. It downloads a fresh copy of Windows and
does a complete reinstall, keeping only some of the built-in Windows
apps. All other apps and programs are removed, getting rid of all
bloatware. I think this is the best idea Microsoft has had since they
launched Windows. I know if I were buying a new computer, the first
thing I'd do is bring it home and run a Windows Refresh, giving me a
nice clean Windows to begin setting up.

Hope this helps.

Both of these items needed adjustment. The values above were not the

I just accepted the defaults the first time through, but it didn't work

Later, someone posted that opening a page at a time was sometimes
better, so perhaps my only problem was the web browser option, but I've
not tried changing the loading option back to a page at a time.

Anyway, it's the Setup Assistant you need rather than the Preferences, I

Re: [JAWS-Users] I7 and I5, Does it really makes any difference for jaws users?

2017-07-23 Thread Audiobookfan
I agree with Steve. It's been my experience that amount of memory makes
a more noticeable difference in performance than does the processor when
talking about multitasking those sorts of tasks.

I've also found that having an SSD makes a huge difference in speed of
almost everything. Of course, none of these things will improve Internet
sluggishness, but loading programs and switching tasks is much snappier
with my 8 GB of memory and my SSD. And I have an I5 sixth generation
processor.

I doubt that in itself would make much difference.

You have other issues to consider:

First, amount of memory.

Second, type of hard-drive.

Memory is pretty self-explanatory.

In terms of hard drives, most laptops come with a 5400RPM drive; whereas
desktops come with 7200RPM drives. This, essentially, slows down the
speed at which data is retrieved and transferred to your computer's
processor and cache memory.

Currently I am using I5 laptop, what I face some time, after opening
several programmes like Kurzweil, few internet explorer tabs, my Dell
laptop perform very slow. Is that the result of i5 processor, would it
run smoothly with i7 in this scenario?

On 7/23/17, Steve wrote:

Not really, for every day use.

There are i5 processors that will do better than i7, for general

Typically, if you use large spreadsheets or do some video editing or
intensive gaming, then you want an i7 because it allows a lot more
hyperthreading; i.e. if you get an eight-core I7 it will run 16
hyperthreads, while an I5 is limited to four threads, even if it has
four

cores.

If money is not an object, go for the fastest I7 you can get with a good
amount of memory. But, if you are just using it for everyday things

email and browsing, then go for a processor which might be a bit less
powerful but has a lot less energy usage so you can conserve your
battery

[JAWS-Users] Pronunciation dictionary

2017-08-14 Thread Audiobookfan
When trying to define the proper pronunciation for a word in the JAWS 18
dictionary, how does one indicate the syllable that should receive the
accent?

I'm trying to get JAWS to pronounce Duluth properly. The accent should
be on the second syllable. JAWS wants to put it on the first syllable.
Can anyone help me with this?

[JAWS-Users] Temporary loss of speech

2017-11-10 Thread Audiobookfan
I temporarily lose speech often when accessing an SD card in my built-in
card reader. Here's what happens.

When I insert my SD card into the card reader, most times I lose speech
for about 20 seconds and each time I take some action the same thing
happens. For example, I must wait about 20 seconds or so after inserting
the card before I can arrow up and down to locate a folder. Once I get
speech, I can arrow up and down fine, but as soon as I enter on a folder
name to open the folder, I lose speech again for about 20 seconds. The
same thing happens when I press the applications key to bring up the
context menu. I must wait the 20 seconds or so before I can arrow
through the menu.

I'm running JAWS 2018 on Windows 10 version 1703, although this same
problem occurred on JAWS 18 on this computer. This only happens with SD
cards and not absolutely every time, but most times. Accessing the local
SSD, external USB drives and network drives all behave as they should.

I suspect this might be an issue with some setting in Windows 10, but I
have no idea what setting or where to look for it. And perhaps it's
something altogether different. I'm open to all suggestions.

Just today, I slipped an SD card into my card reader and experienced the

this issue.

I can offer a work-around, however. You can configure Windows 10 to
automatically log into a specified default user account. This bypasses
the login screen and JAWS comes up talking. I don't recall the steps to
accomplish this, but if it's an alternative you want to consider, Let us

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Recurring problem: JAWS not speaking at logon screen
after Windows 10 updates

Hello Everyone,

I'm using Windows 10 with JAWS version 17.0.2729.

I'm seeking input regarding a recurring problem that I'm experiencing when
Windows 10 updates have taken place.

Whenever there has been a Windows 10 update, JAWS does not speak at the
logon screen. I cannot tell when the logon screen appears and when it is
ready to receive my Windows password. I cannot tell if anything is
happening if I do enter something and try to TAB to the OK button.

Needless to say, this makes logging on to my PC impossible at these times
without sighted assistance.

My husband who is sighted has helped me deal wit this. We have called the
Microsoft Accessible Help line. They said that somehow JAWS gets corrupted
when there are Windows 10 updates, and that we should uninstall and
reinstall JAWS making sure to set JAWS to speak at the logon screen.

Doing those things solves the problem until another Windows 10 update
occurs. There was a Windows 10 update recently. We will need to go through
the process of uninstalling and reinstalling JAWS for the thirdtime.

I'm wondering if others among you have experienced these difficulties. I'm
also wondering if there is a newer version of JAWS that does not have this
problem with Windows 10 updates. I've read of so many problems with JAWS
2018 that I'm hesitant to upgrade to it at this point.

I don't know how someone without sighted assistance would deal with the
frustrations that Ihave described. Repeatedly waiting around for sighted
help to fix a recurring problem such as this shouldn't be acceptable.

As a comment, I want to also say that I'm finding the discussion of screen
readers and web browsers interesting. I admit that having to become skilled
using different screen readers and web browsers, and to keep assessing which
screen reader/web browser combination works with various websites is very
discouraging. I use Internet Explorer. Even the NY Times is crashing more
now than it did previously. I usually get done what I need to but I admit
that I'm definitely less technically adept than many of you.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Christine Murphy

When you perform the transfer to your SD card, do you transfer the

Miriam,

This sounds like a very strange problem which I cannot recall ever
encountering before. So unfortunately, I don't have any other
suggestions beyond that made by others that you contact Microsoft
Accessibility.

Good luck and if you discover the solution to your problem, please let

Jeff,

The Humanware Companion software always works the same way. It finds the zip
folder that contains the files for the book in my books folder. It unzips
the zip folder, puts all the files in a folder, and then transfers this
folder onto the SD card for the VR Stream or the cartridge for the NLS
player. There's never been a problem, ever since Humanware developed this
piece of software. It works with zip folders from NLS and Bookshare. The
software is set to find the zip folders in my books folder which I've always
had, ever since I began downloading books in 2007.

Miriam,

When you perform the transfer to your SD card, do you transfer the entire
folder or just the files inside the folder? I'm wondering if the program
you're using to transfer the files is removing them once they are
transferred. If you're specifying the folder to transfer, it may be removing
it once it's been transferred. Just a thought.

What a hell of a problem. If you went to your documents folder and
then pressed the ctrl spacebar to insure that no folder had the focus.
And then pressed the application key and arrowed up to, new and
pressed enter. And you pressed return on folder. Then if you typed the
name of the folder and you got a new folder with that name. Then you
placed an item in that folder and you found that it was there but
when you went back later the folder was gone. Well then I think that you

2018-04-19 Thread Audiobookfan
Well, this might depend somewhat on your View settings, but one
important key is F6. In some mail programs (e.g., Windows Mail) you use
the tab key to toggle between folder view and list view. With
Thunderbird, you use the F6 key for this purpose.

In the View menu, you might prefer the Classic Layout. Also in the
Layout option of the View menu, you will probably want to have the
Folder pane checked.

If you have multiple accounts, you might like to switch the Folder view
to the Universal view. This will combine the Inbox, Sent items, Deleted
items and Junk items for all of your accounts in a single folder
respectively. This is probably my favorite feature of Thunderbird, since
I monitor several email accounts.

Hope this helps.

Hello Aaron.

Thanks for writing all that. I believe I understand, mostly.

It's not a laptop, but a desktop machine. So, no battery. I've only really
experienced overheat problems with laptops, but you might indeed be right
about the components. Still, my girlfriend's laptop keeps shutting down for
precisely this reason. Yes, I understand what you mean about it being
ridiculous to have the computer operating at maximum clock when it doesn't
need to. I suppose that is the whole point of "throttling". I think you gave
me a clue as to why, even though I thought I had set the plan back to
"balanced", the speed according to several diagnostics was still hanging
around 3500 to 4100 mhz. I'm still trying to understand exactly how the
power plans function.

I was wondering about the processor state and what exactly I ought to do
with it, if anything. I should probably leave the max at 100%; right now the
minimum is 5% and, based on what you described, I think this should be ok.

It's also worth noting that the fans in my PC did need a serious cleaning.
My builder guy is always asking me to check the temps on my computer but I
just figured that's the kind of guy he is and never bothered on a regular
basis. I take it most people usually don't, until their computer starts
acting weird or shutting itself off at high temperatures.

I also realised how much of a drain JAWS + Vocalizer was on my system. I
told him that now that I'm back on Eloquence, the difference is basically
night and day. This system more than meets the listed requirements but the
performance hit, now that I can actually see (and hear) the difference, was
drastic. He doesn't really understand this, but he's never had to use or
bother with a screen-reader himself; I believe he thinks it's a lot more
basic than it actually is.

Cheers and thanks for giving my message some thought.

Hi.

Try putting it back on balanced. You don't have a battery do you?
there's no battery icon? If you do have such an icon, you should be able to
press space on the icon in the system tray and you'll have a left right
slider you can use to adjust the cpu's power consumption for better battery,
better performance or best performance.

You would want to see if you're on better performance. If not, selecting
that will make the cpu spend more time clocked up, and be more eager to
clock up to complete tasks, but won't force it to stand right at the max
clock continuously.

Btw, having the cpu stay that hot just cause it's running at max clock even
if it remains under light load is rather ridiculous. Also, I'd be more
worried about high temps like that in a desktop than I would a laptop.
Desktop components may not handle high temps as handily as a laptop who's
components are all likely built with higher temps in mind e.g. hdds.

If you don't have a power icon tip you can get it to appear by plugging in a
UPS that will support opperation with no drivers, it should appear as a
battery and turn the platform role over to mobile.

Lastly, you could experiment with minimum and maximum processor state.

1. open power options windows key+x, then o.

2. tab around to additional power settings link, hit that

3. tab a whole bunch of times to change power settings for the high
performance power plan link, or what ever plan it is that you have now.
Hit space on that.

4. Find the changed advanced power settings for the high performance
power plan button, you may land right on it. Hit space on that.

The only computer I had which actually powered off do to temp control
issues was an HP Dm4. It had an intel core i5 first gen I believe. It
would climb all the way up to 220 degrees. If it hit 221, *click*.

What happens here is likely what I believe you refer to as a target
junction or tj max for short. It's a max temp the cpu tollerates, if it
reaches that, it abruptly powers off. The system should be employing
throttling to prevent the cpu from reaching this point but it sounds
like your laptops don't bother.

TJ max varries, most modern core i processors like 212, intel atom
processors were 198 or so, and btw I always speak in terms of degrees f,
not celsius.

So, I can think of two possibilities at this point. First is that the
manufacturers of those machines assumed those machines would never
potentially reach tj max while stressed and running at full wattage for
ever. If that's the explanation that works, then your solution is to
figure out why they do have that potential now. If the exhaust fans are
getting clogged a few squirts of compressed air out of a can, not an air
compressor may do the trick. I don't recommend an air compressor because
it may blow rust or water along with the air and that delicate little
fan in there could do without either of those.

The other possibility is that the systems were in fact originally
designed with software and drivers that would employ speed stepping or
some other variation to do exactly what you said, throttle back the cpu
when it is approaching tj max. That could probably be fixed by
installing a missing system driver. If you've ever clean formatted the
system this may be the problem. I suppose it might also be possible that
an upgrade to windows 10, even if it was already on windows 10,
accidentally nuked a driver that took care of this.

I believe that usually the bios takes control of this when the OS
doesn't, or doesn't even allow the OS to control it, but I'm also sure
it's possible for that to be different. A really old Acer Aspire 3000+
laptop I had way back in the early 2000s used an AMD simpron 1.8ghz
processor. It ran really hot all the time. On day I somehow discovered
that I was missing a chipset driver or some software package like that
which I never apparently installed after reformatting the system early
on. That helped make it run a lot cooler, this was before I was into
watching clock speeds with core temp and such.

You could try setting the max processor state lower and see if your
laptops run cooler, a previous email of mine in this thread explains
that process.

Lastly, you could run core temp and minimize it to try and check it
frequently while you attempt to stress the laptops and see what temps
are being realized, if they're staying reasonable but powering off then
there's probably a different issue at play
