I don't know who you got, nor do I know any of their names except a guy named Dennis who has always been very helpful to me; but I've had an encounter with a guy I'll call Mr. SnarkyPants. For what it's worth, I use JAWS 15 with Firefox to shop on the regular Amazon site and I never have any problems. I always found the access site too limiting. playlist in new iTunes crashes
Jaws crashes and restarts then iTunes stops working when I focus on a certain playlist. The list was in my iPhone till yesterday. Then I did something to it that made it disappear from the phone. It still shows up in iTunes. Just tried copying all the tracks to a new list and crash again. Have the latest ios and itunes. I wonder. Do crash reports get sent to FS when Jaws crashes and restarts or are we supposed to send a bug report? You know, for years I have told everyone how great customer service has been at Freedom Scientific. I haven't been in touch with them for a year and a half or so. Another friend had another screen reader, and she used to envy the help I got that she didn't feel that she did. So I hope they will stay that way, and that there hasn't been a change or reduction in work force making it so hard for the ones there that they are frazzled. Re: Calling All Script Writers
actually, the line should look like this: TypeKey (DownArrow, true) Legend has it that on Monday 7/27/2015 09:51 PM, Ed Marquette via Jfw said: About half the time, when I need a script, what I really need is a macro. I am stumped with the simplest problem. I have an application which will work fine if only I pass the down arrow through to the application, not permitting JAWS to process it. I know this works because I've done it manually. So, I want a simple script, which I've assigned to Windows down arrow. The first script command is the ByPass command, and I think that works. I'm then thinking I should send the TypeKey command followed with the parameter (DownArrow). So the line reads: TypeKey (DownArrow) Well, I get a compile error on the TypeKey command. hmmm, you have two closing parenthises Legend has it that on Monday 7/27/2015 09:51 PM, Ed Marquette via Jfw said: About half the time, when I need a script, what I really need is a macro. I think I am overlooking something pretty simple. as the parameter. Sent from my Yoga IdeaPad I. RE: windows 10
Drew, it really depends on what you like to do when using your computer. From all accounts, most of what we as screen reader users do with Windows 7 and 8.1, we should be able to do with Windows 10. The new Windows 10 has a new web browser called the Edge, which may not deliver the best web experience in the beginning. You can learn more about that by listening to the Windows 10 discussion on Fs Cast EP 109. Glen Gordon was a guest on that show, and he talks in depth about Windows 10. Also, from what he said on the show, when you first install Windows 10, you won't have JAWS speech. You will have to use narrator at first, and then once the set up wizzard has finished, you can run JAWS and it will work, as long as you have the latest build of JAWS 16. Magic users must be running version 13. I am a little concerned about how frequently Microsoft plans to update this new version of Windows. That was also discussed on the FS cast episode I referenced earlier. I wonder how that will affect JAWS performance or any screen reader or magnifier performance for that matter. Hope this helps! -Original Message- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Drew Hunthausen via Jfw Sent: Tuesday, July 28, 2015 10:20 AM To: Jaws list jfw@lists.the-jdh.com Cc: Drew Hunthausen dhunthau...@gmail.com Subject: windows 10 Dear list, I know some of you have tested windows 10 and am wondering if you could give me a quick overview of the new features and if it is worth upgrading right away. RE: JAWS and Amazon
I think there are three parts to your post. On the FS tech support person, I'd urge you to call back and run your questions by someone else and/or demand to speak to a supervisor. I've had problems with some FS people, but for the most part I find them professional. On navigating the Amazon website to make purchases, etc., I find the regular (as opposed to the so-called accessible) website quick and easy to use. From time to time, when they make changes to the website, something goes haywire, but Amazon's web designers mostly respond quickly to concerns I and others have brought up with them. You could post specific questions here on this list, and I think you'll find most will be answered. The exception is your third point, the Amazon Music player. I don't use it myself, but a friend who is an experienced and ingenious JAWS user who hates iTunes is corresponding with Amazon in an attempt to get them to fix problems with the music player. No good news there, at least for now. Re: JAWS and Amazon
Hello T Using, I've actually never had any problems with JAWS Technical Support. All my encounters have been courteous, and admittedly, when their only suggestion was to run JAWS in default mode and/or delete all the user settings, I've complained that it was an onerous thing to suggest, they still didn't treat me in any way a demeaning manner. Sometimes I've found that my personal attitude at the initial call has a lot to do with how the responder reacts, and I try to have an open, non-confrontational attitude at the first encounter -- after all even though it's been brewing in my mind for several hours or days, it's a brand-new situation for the tech support person. As to Amazon, I find it pretty good to use with any version of JAWS in the standard mode. Just use all the different navigational techniques until you come up with a pattern that works for you. I use the navigational keys to move around, and in my experience, there are a number of combo lists that come up when you select different ship addresses, recipients, or payment options. Shipping method tends to be radio buttons. Also note that if you ;purchase more than one item, and if they are shipped by different vendors, you will need to select shipping options for each one separately, since they all have different shipping options. I see that you're using JAWS 15, but I don't think that there are any significant enhancements in JAWS 16 that would resolve your issues. I was told sarcastically to go buy a new version of JAWS which I frankly thought was totally out of line-since F S had been tauting the virtues of JAWS 15 for sometime! Thinking some one cared, I mentioned that JAWS does not work with the Amazon music player-very useful for playing musicand Downloading music. Would you believe I was corrected in a short manner as the speaker from F S quipped why would any one Even want to use the music player. Why would any one asksuch astupidquestion? I guess we should be permitted to use some key Amazon features and not others. He criticized me for using JAWS 15-which was what F S had been recommending all along. Great sarcastic moral support. So I ask this. Are people shopping using JAWS 15 and latest Firefox on Amazon.com/access? I have watched friends use the Amazon music player and it has a lot of good features. But F S I guess would Dole outaccessibilityand maybe permit us to use it 3 versions from now. The sarcasm Called support hit hardas I spent a lot of time Trying to use the Amazon site and the player. Also F S support had told me that JAWS 15 worked with both. Thank you and have a good day. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... RE: reading objects
Kimsan, In that case, the chances are that the object you clicked on is a graphic or perhaps a photo. I had to deal with an objects problem a while ago, but I don't remember the details. Two points, just in case they help: First, there is a setting in JAWS setting (insert-v) for hiding or not hiding objects in Word documents. Mine is on, which probably means it's the default. Second, I have a note to myself from long ago that a lister suggested pressing insert-F1 to find out what's going on with an object. I'm afraid I can't test this, as I normally try to do before posting, because I can't think of any Word document I have right now that contains any objects. Sorry if this is useless information. -Original Message- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Kimsan via Jfw Sent: Tuesday, July 28, 2015 2:57 PM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' RE: reading objects
Control shift O then arrow through the list of objects and press enter to select the one you want. If you need to know what the objects are, and are unsuccessful with the methods the other listers have put forward, you can insert alternative text identifying the object with the assistance of a visually equipped person. When the object is selected, go to the context menu, up arrow to format and tab to alternative text, and insert your description. . -Original Message- From: Jfw [mailto:jfw-boun...@lists.the-jdh.com] On Behalf Of Carolyn Arnold via Jfw Sent: July-28-15 1:14 PM To: The Jaws for Windows support list. jfw@lists.the-jdh.com Cc: Carolyn Arnold 4carol...@windstream.net Subject: Re: reading objects What do you do to list objects? JAWS and Amazon
Hi, Seldom if ever have I ever expressed any dissatisfaction with Freedom Scientific. I had been told to upgrade to JAWS 15 so finally I did it. Well, with afriend watching my every move, I Found it was very difficult to buy items on amazon.com/access, Impossible to select a different gift recipientfrom a list of People one lists for shipping, and impossible to change shipping options. I was using the latest Firefox with JAWS 15. I called Freedom Scientificand explained this. Cc: Michael Mote Subject: RE: windows 10 Drew, it really depends on what you like to do when using your computer. Re: Calling All Script Writers
Also, if all you want to do is pass a key through you can simply assign the PassKeyThrough script to the key in the .jkm for the application. I'm not aware of a way to use the key manager to accomplish that but it's not a hard thing to do. It might do something if the object is susceptible of OCR. It would be worth trying for each object in a document that isn't otherwise identifiable. I think Ann's suggestion for objects that don't contain standard text is creative.
