I've seen a lot of production push rods that used alum rivets.

With that said I welded "Some" of mine.

Hi folks,

I had a chat yesterday with EAA's Mark Forss.  He is the
gentleman who coordinates the traveling road show that is EAA's
SportAir Workshops.  They came to near-by Columbus, Ohio in late
October.  The timing and proximity could hardly be better so I took in
the composites workshop taught by Mark Forss himself.

Recently, while looking through KRNet's archives I discovered an
article from the Oct. 1975 Sport Aviation about the woodworking
workshop at Airventure turning out a KR-2 fuse and most of a
horizontal stab by weeks end.  I had been wanting to fire off a note
of thanks to Mark for such a well done effort on the October workshop
when the thought occurred to me that it sure would be nice if a KR-2S
fuse build were the focus of a workshop coming back to a future
Oshkosh Airventure workshop.

Now many of you are probably well past needing something like
this, but I'm sure some of us would be greatly benefited and that
would be a great way to draw attention to the KR in an audience of
likely builders.

Mark tells me that there are several woodworking projects being
considered for upcoming Osh workshops and though the KR-2S wasn't one
of them, he'd see that it was "thrown in the hat".

Mark's email addy is mfo...@eaa.org and I bet it would "ramp up
the momentum" if others among us fired off a note to him supporting
the idea.  Just a thought.

     Thanks,

Rich

I would think the uniqueness of a home built and the fragle market would
make it not on top of the list for planes to steal, as the resale will be a

Joe, a lot depends on the circuit that it's in, but for experimental
purposes with your result sofar, try a 5kOhm linear taper and if that
still doesn't do enough, try a 2kOhm. You may need to use a wirewound

2011-10-17 Thread Jose Fuentes
Hi everyone,

does anyone recommend a good POT OHM/K value for use as a dimmer? I got a
10k one and well I have to go to the very end to get it to go on and I have
very little room (very fine turn) to dimm while I have 75% of the turn that
does nothing.

Was trying to remember my electronics information, I think it's the higher
the resistance the more adjustment I will get so if 10k isn't enough maybe
20-30k?

Though I could be wrong, granted they seem to have started out at 10k on the
store I got it from.

KR> torque wrenches

2011-10-17 Thread Jose Fuentes
There is alot to be said about tool quality.

You can buy a torque wrench from Harborfreight for 20 bucks or spend 70 at
Sears, there are certain things I will buy at harborfreight and others I
will not (screw drivers, wrenches and ratchets (plus sockets)). As a
mechanic long ago I have nearly busted a knuckle and done alot of hand
damage due to cheap tools that simply can not take alot of pressure (imagine
taking a head bolt off a diesel motor using some Chinese ratchet).

Hammers and other types of tools and power tools I will buy.

There is better, like anything qaulity goes up with price, you can get a
good MAC or SNAP-ON for a 100 or 2.

ha ha, kind of my feeling but I do have alot of stuff from HF I just learn
to not abuse the tools. You see american made tools trend to have a safety
factor builtin, for example they say don't pull more then 1 ton, but they
add 1/4 extra support so you really could do 1.25 tons, with chinese made
tools if they say 1 ton, they mean one ton or a hair under it. As long as
you stay 1/4 ton under the limit the tool works fine LOL>

Just my experence.

KR> BMW engine

2011-07-04 Thread Jose Fuentes
You know the one thing that always bothered me about the Corvair is the fact
that NO one is making it anymore at some point your be totally SOL for
parts. While there are some people actually still building VW Type 1
engines, and plenty of parts for years to come.

For example at Sun & Fun there is a manufacture from Brazil that is putting
the engine into produciton, they took over a plant that made the engine.

Not saying that a VW is better, I just wonder about the long term, because
at some point engines will be exhausted and you will be left with having to
scrap your motor 5-10-15 yrs from now. Granted many of us might not even own
the plane that long LOL.

Well they also rebuild thier motors after every race, so the point?

Not trying to be smart, but it's not a valid compare. Even production planes
and new AC motors have gone the EFI route. This is not new tech anymore,
with other systems coming online it will be outdated in 10-20 yrs and people
will say, oh I remember the day we used Gas to fly our planes and we had
injectors.

Not to knock the good people up in WA, but every trip I'm there I never see

Here in Florida where it can getto be over 100f during the summer (not to

I would think this question would realy depend on where the plane will spend

I was at the Boeing aircraft plant near Seattle on a tour, they said it's
because white weighs less then color paint, and on the big planes that can

KR> Folding wing

2011-04-29 Thread Jose Fuentes
THe one major problem when I was thinking about it, is fuel tanks, for
anyone that wants more fuel and figures to put it in the wings, then it
would have to be very secure for when the wing is folded.

I had seen a design before that used a tube within a tube design with a pin.
basically there was a hinge on on the inner tube that slid into the other
tube with a pin to hold it in place. So when you wanted to remove or fold
the wing you pulled the pin and slid the wing out and folded it up.

I magine one could do this for a KR2(s) with one of these setups on either
side of the wing. The Pin would have to be spring loaded to keep it in place
and tight with maybe a couple pull cords on the inside the cockpit to pull
on to pull the pin back so that the wing can be free.

You are talking about adding possibly 25 to 30lbs for such a feature though.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have an old Type 4 laying around with parts I could get?

Also anyone have an DIELH assessory case and starter I can buy?

Also looking for a GPA force 1 prop hub and bearing.

Figured I would ask if anyone had anything from a failed or bad project.

Thanks

Hey I'm away from the hanger for a couple weeks and wanted to get the bolts
ordered.

Does anyone know what length prop bolts did that prop take for a VW? I
assume he keeps the width to a given standard to within a degree.

I have the GPA Force one Prop hub.

Thanks

Though Friday-Sunday is expected to be nice and sunny and NO rain.

Sorry for anyone that has lost thier plane, my projects are like other

I'm guessing this has kept alot of people from making it down. I bet Friday

KR> Exfoliation

2011-03-28 Thread Jose Fuentes
good find,

I was at an FBO where I got most of my flight training, they did repairs as
well, they had a whole wall of parts they had fixed on planes and all these
parts were corrosion just like yours. Its amazing how alumn will just fail
like that.

On the plane I have now there is alot of rusty bolts, I found instances
where I'm concerned if they used AN bolts. I've checked every bolt for an X
I can see.

Seems 2 people built that plane, the second person just threw things
together and most of that is at the firewall. So I figure someone did the
fuselage (including control sufaces) and someone else finished it with the
wiring and firewall forward. I JUST KNOW this was a flying plane, it
originally had the retracts, you can see in some of my pictures the PISS
POOR fiberglass work done to cover the holes.

Can't wait to be done with this baby.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone happen to have a 4" prop ext they want to sell, matching a SAE 2

After putting together the cowling on my other plane I realized I really
need 1 more inch. So I now have a 3" of the above I need to sell, I also
have a 4" that takes 5/8 bolts (real monster) same SAE 2 patttern.

Let me know.

KR>firewall material

2011-03-14 Thread Jose Fuentes
Hmmm that is true, though I do have a real small tank too so there is alot
of weight savings there. Guess it all depends on several factors. I guess if
I was going the two place route I would worry more about it as tyring to lug
300-400lbs of humans then every single pound saved counts.

I won't ever have that extra 150-200 lbs in my plane. Guess I would have to
weigh the benifits of a thicker firewall vs the thinner one.

I had also planned to put in roll bars to go over my head in the back
(incase it lands on the top) and have those bars to all the way to the
firewall (to offer a little more structural support in case of crash without
it collapsing on me). Not sure if that is going to be over kill (at least
the bars going all the way to the firewall).

KR> Progress so far

2011-03-14 Thread Jose Fuentes
Slow but sure, note the repair job on that elevator, got the braces almost
done by the machine shop for the landing gear so soon this baby will be on
it's own wheels!!

Was reading though the plans, and it seems it was supposed to have cooking
foil thin firewall, .005, gezz that is thin!! No wonder it peeled off with
my fingers. I'm going with stainless steel at .035 yea a little more weight,
but this plane is being configured as a single seat plane and with a Type 4
2400cc engine. So more then enough to handle the extra weight of a decent
firewall LOL.

Here are some of my latest pictures:
 http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2094554=1106895076=f07ac91656

I need to start the other side and get that sanded down and the top deck
fixed on that side.

Once the landing gear is on and I've done what I want on the top, I'm going
to put the engine mount on and put some moving wheels bolted to the engine
mount and put the whole plane on it's nose. that way I can sand and fix
the bottom. Easier to glass vertical then upside down LOL.

Float micro switch, it's what I have to control keeping the header tank at a

You can put one in each wing tank to know when they are empty as well, use a
fuel flow tranducer to know exactly how much fuel you used.

He He I would have to agree, sorry I didn't say, I ment to say to vent the

the issues Steve brought up. Just be careful that you design it in such a
way that it doesn't get sipioned out.

KR> Fuel filler and caps

2011-03-01 Thread Jose Fuentes
You might not want fuel fillers in the wing tanks since the header tank is
higher. Nor do you want vents there.

You can put bigger lines to the tanks from the header tank (1/2 or larger
tube (smaller tube for fuel pickup)) and the fuel will drain to the wing
tanks.

Put vent lines form the wing tanks to the header tank and then vent the
header tank.

2011-02-27 Thread Jose Fuentes
Ok,

I was under the impression that you had to glass the outside wood before
painting, to act as a protection layer to a degree?

The project I took over, well they painted over the wood. Not sure what kind
of paint they used but it really flakes off, I don't think it was made to be
flexible.

So I was using a paint scraper to scrape off these big flakes of paint and
noticed wood on the side walls and not glass.

Am I wrong?

KR> hanger and compression

2011-02-14 Thread Jose Fuentes
I'm sure others can say for sure, but it's always been my understanding that
compression numbers should be pretty close on all cyclinders. After all
depending on the engine, it could cause the engine to be off balance and
cause all kinds of other problems.

KR> Updates on the project

2011-01-23 Thread Jose Fuentes
Oh BTW, I need to look up the firewall in the plans I purchased. Would you
believe I think I have alumn foil for cooking with that feels thicker then
what was on the plane. I stripped that off with my fingers. Whomever owned
that project used staples, roofing nails and regular home depot bolts to
hold what looks like used to be a front landing gear. Though the project
looks like someone else started it and got it to a boat stage (and did a
good job) and then someone else finished it before whatever happened that it
got to the condition that it did.

Wish I knew more of the history, I'm going to have to be very careful and
look everything over.

KR> iFly 700

2011-01-14 Thread Jose Fuentes
If you just want GPS and other informaiton then this unit is fine, though it
won't replace your other insturments or give you IFR. Many of these less
expensive units do not come with an artifical horizon or replace any of the
6 pack. They simplly allow you better navigation and will do what you are
wanting (reduce cluttler and easier nav).

I'm going the http://www.pcavionics.com/ route, it has a solid state gyro
that plus into an onboard system, mine of course will have SSD drive. Though
this is all on my bigger plane. For the KR2, still trying to figure out what
I want to do, there is alot less space and so much to put on. I might reduce
what I want to do with it to more basics and just have AS/ALT analog
backups.

The tech is getting cheaper every day so who knows what there will be when I
finally finish everything else on the plane, leaving the electronics for
last.

KR> header tank hold downs

2011-01-14 Thread Jose Fuentes
Yea thats what I was planning on doing as well, to make it easier to do
maintaince and annuals and such. Though what if you use strips of
Rubber between the frame and the tank? That way it's not resting directly on
the frame?

Even if you use straps you probably want to use rubber on the straps to keep
them from rubbing a hole into the tank.

KR> To Turbo or not to Turbo that is the Question

2011-01-04 Thread Jose Fuentes
That's very true, it does make sense to have in in-flight adjustable prop.
That way it can be adjusted, it's a good point.

I've seen this one as a thought but heard a few bad things about it, but the
bad things were based on years ago issues, would a company still sell
something if they hadn't worked out those issues (maybe I'm naive)?
http://www.ivoprop.com/inflightmediummodel.htm

Though not your standard type adjustable prop but lighter maybe?

Anyways good point and another item to think about when going turbo.

KR> To Turbo or not to Turbo that is the Question

2011-01-02 Thread Jose Fuentes
Hi Everyone

Was discussed before I've ruled out "Electric" turbo chargers. I'm going
with a VW Type 4 2400cc engine and I've been on the bench as to turbo or not
to turbo.

Ok, so I would get a bit More boast possibly on takeoff and when I fly high
7k+.

though the negatives seem to out weigh the positives.

More piping to be done (very very custom piping btw, little chance to buy an
exhaust system ready built to bolt and fly).
Hotter heads possibly?
More chance for exhaust leaks
More parts to fix when broken
More weight for everything to support the turbo (including the turbo its
self)
More wear on the motor
How effective is a turbo at 2400+RPM unless its small?

So at the end is it worth it? does anyone have more positives to out weigh
my perceived negatives (are these valid concerns?).

I've heard the 2400cc will deliver 80-90hp what will be the avg increase for
a turbo at such low RPM.

I've already heard some of the negatives from others, but does anyone have a
list of positives?

Just want to paint a whole picture here to make a choice on.

Thanks for any and all comments/opinions/facts.

KR> Turbos on VW Mech. Vs. Elec.

2010-12-27 Thread Jose Fuentes
Ha ha,

Seems no one has respect for the ones on ebay.

http://www.car-forums.com/s7/t248.html

Though there are some very valid statements when you think about it, then
there is Tomas Knight, seems his name is all over the place when it comes to
elec turbos, but his units are 2500 bucks.

http://www.boosthead.com/product.php

There is alot of good information, though it seems to validate the point,
you can't run the turbo at the rate it needs to run to be effective with
the power the alt will produce. It can only be run for short hops (good for
take offs and maybe stalls, to pull out of them).

Though 2500 for a good elec turbo system is a bit out there, sicne it
requires extra battries it reduces the weight savings drastically. Seems
the cheaper ones are not very valid as they have no tests I could find to

One would think for 2500 it better work, but I could see alot of people
tempted by $100 turbo to just try it out. I'm sure they see some increase,
but worth the weight and drain?

KR> Turbos on VW Mech. Vs. Elec.

2010-12-27 Thread Jose Fuentes
I've been seriously looking at electric turbo's not the cheap ones, but some
of the good ones cost as much as a turbo (300-400) and seem to range from
8ps to 12psi.

Alot less plumbing, less weight, can do on/off when off the air flows though
unrestricted.

Also going EFI so there will be an O2 sensor that can increase the fuel fo
rthe higher air input.

Thoguhts on the subject?

Thanks Mark,

KR> VW True HP

2010-12-25 Thread Jose Fuentes
You know I've heard some of this before but since this is my first shot at
these smaller engines I was wondering about this article.

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.aviation.homebuilt/msg/4472e9a8bcf1c1be?pli=1

I'm no expert though people are flying with these engines and seeing or say
they are seeing x amount of horse power and x amount of speed.

How much of what is said is true, also I understand that a PRSU helps lower
the RPM's of an engine so that te prop can be effective, as they are
designed for about 2500 RPM max and the engines can go 4+K RPM.

So the goal of a higher CC engine (like 2400cc vs 1600cc) is more torque lbs
hence more power when turning the prop at the same RPM. Using a PRSU can
get more RPMs and hence more power and reduce the prop to 2500rpm but also
run the motor hotter hence problems. SO the value ganed out of putting a
PRSU on a VW beyond better takeoff peformance?

Any thoughts?

KR> Elevator?

2010-12-25 Thread Jose Fuentes
Hi Mark,

I value your opion very much, thoguh I might not been clear in my email,
wish I could take some pictures but I'm in Orlando right now.

Anyways, the Horz Stablizer is fine, nothing wrong with it, it's all on the
elevator it looks like something just snapped it off on one side.

Most of the wood for the elevator as shown in the picture is there, as I'm
not familer with the construction and don't have the plans I can't say how
much is missing.

So here is me guessing.

I think there was some kevlar or glass laid up over a foam core that was
glued on to the wood that controls the elevators movement. The glas/foam is
what is broken off, the wood is still in place on the henges.

The wood is a little split the first few inches (maybe only 2) at the very
end towards the outside.

Since everything else is good I figured there must be a way to just do a new
elevator on that side.

Since I know metal (BD-4 building) I figured I could also use some of my
2024 T3 alumn cut into the shape needed, and epoxy it on to a foam wedge cut
the correct shape and then epoxy/screw the metal onto the wood. Figured the
combonation of screws and epoxy might do the trick to keep it on there.

Thoughts?

KR> Elevator?

2010-12-25 Thread Jose Fuentes
Hi everyone

Someone had a whole Horz piece with elevator to sell me, though it occurred
to me when I went to look at the lane in more detail that I'm not familiar
with how the horz is attached?

I thought maybe it was bolted on and glassed in, so I would simply cut the
glass and unbolt it. but it seems after talking to someone else about a
motor and their project that it might be glued on.

If it's glued on I fear it might be a major PITA to get off?

Ok here is the basic problem, the whole elevator is missing on one side, as
shown here:
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31949942=d7772e8339=1106895076

Now the wood seems ok except the last 5 inches it's split. To repair with a
new piece of wood I would have to cut the rudder spar.
Here is a thought, could I expoy the split wood so it doesn't get any worse
at the very end. Then use hard Kevlar to shape out a new elevator and then
glass it in place?

Open to suggestions?

Thanks and happy holidays

Joe

Why not drill it and screw it? use flat screws and hence easy to concel.

I'm not a fan of glue, my other plane's designer had came up with metal
wings where the skins are glue'ed on and well I've met 2 people so far where
that hasn't been all the pretty (skins actually pulling off rather easily),
needless to say I rivited all the skins on, not as pretty and smooth, but I

KR> fuel system fittings

2010-12-18 Thread Jose Fuentes
Well I can't speak for everyone, but metal lines tend to stay where they
are, and look cleaner and generally weigh less, I use a combonation of the
two, where I need flexiblity or there will be alot of vibration I use steel
braided rubber lines (AN fittings of course). I've used barbed fittings in
the past and I really hate them, I've had lines slip off, I've had it where
(to prevent slip off) i've dug into the rubber, they generally have not been
a good clean experence.

Also another note, some of us run EFI systems, and requrie lines that can
take more pressure, getting flexible lines running everywhere that can take
the pressure, weighs alot more then a simple alumn tube. Plus you are NOT
using no barbed end with EFI system, thats like asking for trouble!!

Though due to costs I can understand the desire to go barbed.

I went AN for even my radiator hose on my BD-4 LOL, got some fittings
epoxyed into the radiator and welded on to other fittings of the motor,

KR> Wheels, brakes and Tires

2010-12-14 Thread Jose Fuentes
Hi everyone,

Didn't hear much back on the tri gear so I assume no one has any for sell,
so I will probably get it from avarero.

THough maybe someone has the following list?

Matco/Cleavland WHeels and brakes for the Main gear (with axles? or fit on
5/8 axle?)

Wheel and axle for Front Fork (nose gear) up to 500x5

Tires/tubes for the above wheels

Trying to get the gear on this so I can transport it a bit easier when I
move the plane AGAIN to another hanger.

KR> Finally got my plane!

2010-12-12 Thread Jose Fuentes
Yep, got a good project, now I just need to gather up the items I hit the
list about earlier.

Though my top item is landing gear, perfer tri-gear. I'm looking to get the
Diehl gear, thoguh if anyone has some from an old project then let me know.

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2094554=1106895076=f07ac91656

For anyone interested, these are my BD4 pictures
 http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2035597=1106895076=c02c8404e0

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2061761=1106895076=570a3f7bfa

Yea I have a few repairs and changes to make, I got the Diehl wing skins so
that should make things alot faster for the wings, spars and all, are all
done.

It looks like it had the Grove landing gear on it at one time, though I
don't like the way it hangs on the outside, so I want the better loking tri
gear.

So if anyone has the

WHeels, brakes
Gear Legs
Front Nose Gear (wheel too)

Just let me know ASAP.

To add to the list I would also be interested in flairings and wheel pants.

Thanks everyone.

KR> Welding and welder selection

2010-11-05 Thread Jose Fuentes
I second that, I've designed alot of different parts on my current project
but all welding had been done at a good shop. Like anything, there is a buy
vs. do choice to be made. I only have maybe 8-16hrs a weekend, spending 4-5
hrs to wield something that takes a pro 30min is not going to maxize my time
when I do get to work on my plane.

KR> Wheel Pants Landing Lights

2010-11-04 Thread Jose Fuentes
The plane I'm getting is already fitted for the wheel pant lights, but when
I do the tanks (after I finish my BD4, I don't want two planes on the ground
out of the air) I think I will put them in the leading edge as well. Might
leave the ones in the pants alone as long as they don't break but mostly as
extra light for taxing or somehting. They are real light weight and already
in place.

I love the retracting lights, maybe under the wing at the ends or someting
LOL that would be cool!!

Yep thats how I feel, as well, thats why it's augmentation, not replacement

LOL its no different then an auto pilot but you are telling the autopilot to
move left or right or up or down or whatever. though you can turn off the
auto pilot and take control of the "REAL" stick. And yep, I thought about
sudden crazy servo's and hence why it has an off switch for the system.

Yes, but that was YEARS ago and electronics have gone a long ways. Plus
those were 100% FBW I'm talking about augmentation. which in reality is only
an auto pilot taking to the next level.

KR> Fly By Wire

2010-11-03 Thread Jose Fuentes
Thanks,

Actually as a small bit I'm using the onboard computer to control flaps and
trim. I have a load pressure sensor on the stick to tell how much back
pressure the stick has to adjust by a click on the screen the trim tab.
These are two areas I felt comfortable using FBW tech until I did more since
one could land without the flaps and fly without the trim if something goes
wrong.

KR> Fly By Wire

2010-11-03 Thread Jose Fuentes
Thanks, that is the reason for the quck connect of the control stick, and
using actulators in combonation with manual control so one can switch easy
enough and the use of the special actulators that won't lock in the controls
on power failure.

This solves two problem as it's not 100% dependant on the FBW and can be
over ridden, the airbus system was only designed to do FBW 100% and hence
some of it's issues.

I'm a technology guy, I build and work on large enterprise systems and work
for a fortune 100 company, so it apeals to my sense of adventure to want to
see how I can control the plane. It's small and very controlable I think the
KR2 would be a great example. I've even thought how cool it would be to make
it fly remotely using the same system (of course over a non-populated area)
with a camrea.

Though I'm not crazy hence not a replacement of the controls for FBW but an
augmentation of the controls by FBW with the manual controls still there.

I would also be able to link it and program a custom auto pilot for alot
cheaper then what they sell for. I plan to use PC Avonics in both planes, so
I can hook everthing up to the onboard computer and it can control the plane
via it's own Auto pilot routines the designer already has in place, I talk
with TOD the main designer of the software from time to time.

KR> Fly By Wire

2010-11-03 Thread Jose Fuentes
Hi everyone,

I had been thinking about a fly by wire design, I had posted this on my
other forum I'm a member of, but too many of them are "BUILD IT to PLANS!!"
type, I like to change things for the better.

I'm thinking one of the changes I could do to the KR I'm planning on getting
is to figure out how to do fly by wire, I'm thinking of a full feature Servo
that can go in several directions along with one for the rudder. I had
originally thought about using liner actuators but if power goes off there
is no way to dis-engage them to take over manually.

I've found a magnetic driven actuator that moves the rod based on power
applied, when no power applied it moves freely. Has anyone had any
experience with this? They are a bit costly and seem heavy and would need 3
of them.

This of course would be hooked up to a computer since each unit would have a
built in POT so I can track exactly how much it moved, the joy stick would
then provide the computer with how much I want to move in either direction
which would then control the actuators.

I would also wan tto make the manual stick be able to fold down or
disconnect but have a quick way to shove it on a nub or hole and boom have a
quick connect for when I have to take manual control.

thoughts?

KR> welding aluminum

2010-11-02 Thread Jose Fuentes
Is the goal here to make alumn tanks?

I did that for my BD4 but, I had made a cardboard mockup of the tank that
fits in the hole and gave it to a shop and said MAKE IT REAL, they made it
real alright LOL.

Next time I'm going to use that foam stuff and place a big bag in the area
and fill it with the foam and wait for it to harden, probably alot easier to
make a mold that way LOL.

KR> Intro of my self

2010-11-02 Thread Jose Fuentes
Be nice to get to miami with fuel to spare which is 500 miles.

I agree on flying, right now the plane needs some fixing but I don't want to
do anything major to it right now, all the insides were taken out, so I have
to rewire the pannel as well as put everything back inside and bolt on the
motor and setup everything there and do minor repairs to the body and
wings/surfaces and then paint. That's the min to get it in the air. The 1
addon I want to get done while I'm doing all the wireing anyways is to get
the position/anti-collision lights in place and the landing lights.

KR> Intro of my self

2010-11-02 Thread Jose Fuentes
Hi Everyone,

My Name is Joe Fuentes,

I'm planning on buying a KR2 and will probably finish the transaction I've
started in mid Nov. The KR2 is a very interesting plane and has good speed
which is what I'm looking for. The plane I'm looking at only has the
standard 13-15gal header tank. It also has a Rev Master 2100 rebuilt. I need
to put things back together and do some body work (hits and such here and
there) but over all the plane looks to be in good condition. I'm also
planning on getting it approved for VFR Night (as currently it has no
position/anticolision lights or headlights).

A little about myself, I've been building a BD-4 all metal plane now for a
couple years, I'm at about 80% with it, wings are nearly done, then I have
alot of electrical and fit the cowling and such plus all the testing of the
systems. All in a hanger at 2J9 airport in North FL, fun I know. I'm also a
student pilot (yes I started building before I even flew) though all I have
left now is the written test and a check ride that stands between me and my
license. I work full time and only have weekends to work on the plane and
only a few hours at a time. I have 2 boys and while they were excited at the
start and wanted to help, now they simply don't want to go anymore :( but I
try to bribe them LOL. Hence the reason I've been looking at the KR2, I
figured the one I'm looking at I could have up and running within a month,
get it inspected and have something to fly around while I work on the family
SUV of a plane. I also figured I could use it to commute since I travel ALOT
(like every week) but only if the project is within 500 miles of 2J9
(Huntsville, AL, Atlanta and down to Miami). The BD4 since it's 4 passenger
I figured we could use on more family outings and such.

Anyways, I do have some questions.

How easy is it to convert the fixed tail draggier to a fixed tri gear? I've
sent en email out to one of the leading makers (it looks like it has their
tail draggier mains) but have yet to hear back from them on the subject.
Need more fuel but do not want to tear open any wings, I saw someone did
some fuel tanks out of PVC sewer pipes and fitted them into the wings, with
all the safety foam and such I wonder how much fuel 4 of these pipes can
hold, as that is an option I can do without messing up the wings I think?
Any recommendations or gotchas I should watch out for?
How easy are they to fly? Is anyone in North FL with a KR2, I would love to
get a chance to fly with someone?

That's all I have right now.

Thanks in advanced and look forward to many more discussions.

Joe
