KRnet> KR-2s project for sale

2023-09-11 Thread Paul V via KRnet
With a sad heart I would like to announce my project is for sale. It is
currently at a 90% complete 90% left to do stage.
Some of the main features are
Built around a 6’4” person
It is powered by a Corvair engine built under the supervision and parts of
flycorvair.com. It is a completed firewall forward and then some.
A Dynon Avionics package including complete auto pilot. All that is needed is
a HDX Efis.
Duel stick control courtesy of Mark Langford design Dr. Dean’s hinge design and
of course, Larry Fresner‘s brakes design.

I will be at the gathering Saturday if anyone is interested. I am located in
Belleville Illinois . About 60 miles west of Mount Vernon. You can email me
also at ppaul...@gmail.com.

I’ll see you Saturday

Well, yes and no. Jeff Scott played with the idea ;o) Scroll down a little
way on this page- http://www.flysquirrel.net/M19float.html, from waaayyy
back in 1999 when I was 22 years younger and thinking of doing crazy stuff
;o) And in September of 1999 when Jeff sent me those pix, we were just a
few short months away from the dreaded Y2K catastrophe that was going to
pitch the earth off its axis and send the world into total chaos.

But to stay on topic, I don't think anyone has actually considered flying a
KR on floats.

Re: KR> master relay

2018-08-04 Thread Paul & Karen Smith via KRnet
Hi Stef, my first thought is that your problem could be wrong type of relay.
There is essentially two types of relays, those designed for short durations
(starter relays) and those for prolonged use (master relays).
I would ensure you have the correct type fitted. The other possible cause
could be a poor ground, some relays are grounded through their case, a high
resistance here could produce heat.
Another test you could perform is to test the current the relay is drawing
and compare this to the specifications.
Hope something here helps,
Paul.

I'm in the ssme position. To tell the truth I haven't worked on my plane

I'm in Tampa now in a middle of a cross country trip down to fly Fly Young

I have decided when I get back on Sunday. The Wings of Hope 172 is going in
for new radios and will be down for a few months. I will change my focus
and get back on my airplane.

Hi everyone,

Mark made his belly brake without holes. Which one would provide more stopping
power (drag):

1. Plain flat surface.
2. The surface with the holes in it.

Is there any reason why the same principle could not be applied to the top of
the stub wings - it should provide much more drag and kill lift instantly after
landing. Much easier to make than any form of flaps.

Keep well all,

Henni

I would like to make the KR fly in again and if so will bring a seat pan to

pan can be made on it in a few hours now. I am thinking that we may either

Are You Flying to the Eclipse Path

Notice Number: NOTC7320

Do you plan to fly your aircraft on August 21 during the solar eclipse? If yes,
you’re not alone. Several airports located in the path of the eclipse have
notified the FAA that they are anticipating a significant increase in air
traffic before and during the eclipse. Many of these airports are non-towered
and have limited capacity to accommodate an increase in traffic. Here are some
tips to fly safe in the path of the eclipse.

Use US Chart Supplements (formerly AFD).
Check NOTAMs for your departing and arriving airports, including
airports along the route of your flight. Remember, some airports may already be
at capacity.
Call your destination airport, and respect the runway closures and
safety information they provide.
Expect Unicom congestion, and check for additional instructions on
ASOS/AWOS voice over.
See and Avoid is a high priority. Watch out for possible drone activity.
Utilize Air Traffic Services when available.
Use IFR operations when appropriate, file VFR flight plans …. let Air
Traffic assist you!

Have some specific questions about an area or airport? The FAASTeam is here to
help. Our local FAASTeam Program Managers (FPM) are available to help with
local knowledge. Find your local FPM for any given area

Larry Flesner came over for a nice visit today.  I picked him up at the airport
went back to the house and looked over my plane and he suggested a couple
things. It's always nice having another set of eye look at it once in awhile.
Then we had lunch. After lunch I was surprised.  My grandkids came over
unexpectedly for a visit. We all took Larry back to the airport and the kids
got to sit in a real airplane that takes off. We hung around for a little while
after Larry took off and listened to the air traffic controllers.  It was a
great day.Thanks for coming Larry.

Thanks for all the good information guys.  All my AN turnbuckles are old  but
in good shape.  None of them have witness holesGot them with a big  tray of
hardware from an old friend inJackson Tennessee who I haven't had lunch with
for a while🤔I talked to John at B&B. Joe wasn't in the office today.  It was
decided the best thing for me to do was to make two new cables. Now with
knowing the thread requirements and everything locked down with rigging pins.
It should be a piece of cake.

One thing that I added. I thinded the micro down after it started breaking my

To answer one question. I don't think the JCAB have any outside connections

neither the LAA or EAA can have any influence on the JCAB. Our UK CAA is in

Colin Hales Online Petition for KR2 Worldtour...

Hi all,

Sorry to fill your inbox up twice in a week, but now I have to submit new
documents to the JCAB who like me, have been let down by the Japanese Flight
Permission Agents also. They were supposed to help, but after months of simply
wasting everyone's time, haven't helped and probably never could and have just
hindered.

So to aide myself I would like to start an online petition to get some weight
behind me of a few hundred fellow pilots, to show to the JCAB, that I have
support and I'm not going away. Would you, could you all look at the online
petition below and if you agree, would you care to sign it for me and share it
around to any fellow pilots or engineers or aviation enthusiastic friends even.
Its a bit cheeky I know, but I think it might help quite a bit, so I've
asked...

Cheers Colin H.

Re: KR> Frustrations with rigging my ailerons

2017-06-11 Thread Paul Visk via KRnet
Typically crosswind limits are up to the individual pilot.  Every Pilots
ability is different. For an example alot of my flying was up in North Dakota
and if you weren't able to handle 15+ kts crosswinds in a 172 you wouldn't be
able to fly much.  It's also the type of airplane you have. Nose gear
configurations can usually handle more crosswind than taildraggers. Joe has
demonstrated in the past with his trip to Chino that he is a very accomplished
crosswind lander so Jo's limits would be completely different from somebody
else's.

KR> Frustrations with rigging my ailerons

2017-06-09 Thread Paul Visk via KRnet
I have been trying to get my aileron deflection angles right for awhile now.
The best I can get is about 18.5 up and 8.5 down.

It looks like I need 3/4" more travel at the stick and it's not there.  So I'm
going to have to weld new U channels on the stick brackets and figure out were
to drill the pivot point.

I used Mark's design on the stick and used the original bracket design for the
aileron push rods. I'm thinking that the two are not compatible.

Has anyone had this issue?

2017-05-08 Thread Paul Visk via KRnet
I just made two push rods for my auto pilot and will be making my aileron' push
rods shortly.   Wicks had all the stuff you need. All you need is to order
R3/8X083-T6 tubing.  Two male rod ends. Item # XM3 and a couple of jam nuts.
Cut your tube to length. Drill the ends of the tube with a #3 drill bit. A
7/32" drill bit will also work. Tap the ends with a 1/4-28 tap. Then screw in
the rod ends with the jam nuts.
My tech advisor likes to do it like Larry said. The problem with that way it's
twice as expensive.

I received my swaging tool and gauge from AS yesterday and checked the crimps I
had made with my Princess Auto tool. they are correct and so now the only thing
I am trying to come to terms with is that the info I read says 2 crimps per
sleeve but there is really only room for 1 per sleeve unless the 2 crimps
overlap the ends of the sleeve which leaves a bump/ring around the middle of
the sleeve. Someone did say that 1 crimp is sufficient and I assume that would
just be in the middle of the sleeve.
Any other thoughts on this?

I just ordered the go no go gauge from Aircraft Spruce for checking my
nicopress sleeves but I have a few questions. The tool I bought is from
Princess Auto and is not an actual nicopress brand. I have been reading a lot
about swaging and wondering if others have used sleeves/tools/ gauges that are
not all from the same company.
If you use the gauge and the fitting is in the correct slot does it really
matter if you use a matching tool?
I know that is the common thought but is that just because of liability issues
for the companies because of use on certified aircraft ?
I want my cables to be safe but also don't want to spend a small fortune on a
tool I will only use a few times.
The gauge should arrive by the end of the week or on Monday so I will try a
test fit first but would appreciate thoughts on this issue.
Thanks

they going to do? Pull my license, put me in jail? I'm 81 years old so
neither one would amount to much. However, I am going to an FAA forum this
afternoon for the new medical and I have not flown as PIC since I lost my
medical in 1993. I have done a lot of flying from the right seat. I made the

Where the problem is Ron.  If you have some type of situation where you get
involved with the FAA as in an accident, a runway incursion or even another
airplane bumps into you on the airport ramp and insurance gets involved. You
have this little form that you have to fill out for the FAA asking you all
these questions and one of them is the date of your medical.  That is where it
can get really nasty for you. I guess you're not breaking the rules until you

April 24 – The FAA encourages general aviation pilots to learn
how to meet the BasicMed requirements

Notice Number: NOTC7130

General aviation pilots can now prepare to fly under BasicMed without holding a
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical certificate as long as they meet
certain requirements. They can fly under BasicMed beginning on May 1, the
effective date of the January 10 final rule.  It offers pilots an alternative
to the FAA’s medical qualification process for third class medical
certificates, while keeping general aviation pilots safe and flying affordable.

General aviation pilots may take advantage of the regulatory relief in the
BasicMed rule or opt to continue to use their FAA medical certificate. Under
BasicMed, a pilot will be required to complete a medical education course every
two years, undergo a medical examination every four years, and comply with
aircraft and operating restrictions.  For example, pilots using BasicMed cannot
operate an aircraft with more than six people onboard and the aircraft must not
weigh more than 6,000 pounds.

A pilot flying under the BasicMed rule must:

possess a valid driver’s license;
consent to a National Driver Register check;
have held a medical certificate that was valid at any time after July
15, 2006;
have not had the most recently held medical certificate revoked,
suspended, or withdrawn;
have not had the most recent application for airman medical
certification completed and denied;
have taken a BasicMed online medical education course within the past
24 calendar months;
have completed a comprehensive medical examination with any
state-licensed physician within the past 48 months;
have been found eligible for special issuance of a medical certificate
for certain specified mental health, neurological, or cardiovascular
conditions, when applicable; and
not fly for compensation or hire.

Pilots can read and print the Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist and
learn about online BasicMed online medical courses at www.faa.gov/go/BasicMed

KR> Bow in aileron spars

2017-04-22 Thread Paul Visk via KRnet
Something to watch out for .On my first wing I found I had a slight bow in my
aileron spars in opposite directions. This caused a very stiff movement of the
hinge.  (I fixed it.) This wing I have attached a very accurate level that I
bought from Harbor Freight. 🤣At least the edge is straight.  In doing this will
ensure there is no bow before I micro it in place. I will do this on both the
wing and aileron.

Anyone going to SMF this year?

If you come across any company there who would like to be a sponsor for the KR
Gathering .  Give them my contact info or direct them to the gathering website
for my contact info.
What I did last year at AirAventure was print out the home page with all the
other sponsor already participating.  We are looking for gift certificates and
prizes for the drawing.  One thing I'm trying to do this year is to find a

Does anyone know the difference between 411-350 vinyl ester resin and 700 vinyl

My tech advisor stop by today. Good timing.  Michael and I had just started
gassing the top of my last wing.  Him not having much experience with
fibreglassing.  He asked what the mico does. I explained what the micro does
and the importance of it.  Everything else on the plane looks good. He said,
It looks like your going to be needing a hangers soon. I told him I was going
to put an eight foot extension with plastic on the front of my garage to be
able to put both wings at the same time. But that won't be until next early
spring when I start final assembly.

Re: KR> Cowling Cooling Air design

Here is my experimentation into this very issue.

Basically a thrust augmentation/extraction system.

As I am not flying yet I can't give you any results.

Paul.

-Original Message-
From: Sid Wood via KRnet
Pete,
The idea for the larger opening size is to accommodate the increased air
volume due to engine heating. However, the exit methodology is particularly
critical to the overall efficiency for getting the cooling air overboard and
back into the airstream. Simply cutting a big hole in the bottom of the
otherwise streamlined lower cowl will not get the job done. The positive
incidence angle of most lower cowls will have air going into the lower cowl
instead of exiting. You need to create a negative pressure area at the
exit. Some designs put a down-turned lip at the forward edge to attempt
creating the negative pressure. This works, but is terribly inefficient. A
better scheme is to make a rear facing ramp to get the air flowing smoothly
toward the exit with the exit cut off square with the slip stream. That
way, maximum negative pressure is created at the exit, and the flow rate is
maximized. If the ramp is tuned right for the cooling flow, a net increase
in thrust can be obtained. Wind tunnel tests on the P-51 confirmed 8
percent increase in thrust just cooling the water radiator.
The 4 engine exhaust pipes exit the same ramps as for the cooling air exit.
So, there is some flow augmentation due to the engine exhaust blast.

--

I working on the lower half of my cowling and need to know the multiplier to
size the exit area. I vaguely remember that the exit area should be approx.
1.5 times the total size of the inlet area. Need to qualify that memory. I
have Tony Bingelis' "Firewal Forward" book, but can't find that multiplier
listed anywhere.
Any help or info greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

I agree, in general.  Just arguing the numbers though, if the AN bolt has a
tensile strength of 125,000 psi, a quick search of the data for grade 5 fine
thread 5/16 bolts (coarse thread is a little less) shows a tensile strength of
about 120,000 psi, so 4% lower tensile strength.  Don't get me wrong though...
for an engine mount, it should be AN hardware... not Ace Hardware.

KR> Melting lead

2017-01-27 Thread Paul Visk via KRnet
First a comment before my question.  In the book it says to use an old pot to
melt lead down for the aileron counter weight.  I'll give you some advise. What
you consider an old pot is might be different then what your wife considers an
old pot is. Be forewarned😡

How do you melt a 5 lbs chunk of lead on the stove? I did an internet search.
Lead melts at 621 degrees.  I'm not even getting close to that.

Re: KR> DAR inspections

2017-01-22 Thread Paul Visk via KRnet
Here in the US. It is NOT recommended to buy a project under construction
without a builders log.  The thing is you have to prove that 51% of the
airplane by amateurs and without a log there's no way to prove.  From what I've
heard Canada has a much more stringent process. My opinion, do not buy it
without a builders log. You're buying nothing but a problem.

Hi All;
I am considering a project in the U.S. that has no documentation whatsoever and
am wondering about DAR inspections.
I want to import this project into Canada and our inspections require a pre
cover (before box spars etc,are closed in) .
What I am wondering is if I might find a number or something that shows it was
done in the U.S .
In Canada each component is stamped or stickered to show it has been done.
The project is fairly complete all spars are closed, wings closed etc.although
it would still meet 51% requirement here in Canada.
I f I can show the inspections I an import as parts and then continue it.
Any thoughts about this?
Thanks

KR> Aileron hinge bolts

I'll be ordering my aileron hardware from Wicks soon. In looking in the book at
10.59. It says to use 8/32 pan head bolts for the aileron hinge. Has anyone had
problems with sufficient clearance between the heads of the bolts if they're
lined up with each other?  Or should they be offset. I believe I've seen some
people use countersunk bolts. Any advice would be appreciated.

My daughter in law's father how is a A&P inspector at Delta took me on a

You've got a point, Oscar.  I'm not concerned about the wires and
hoses, they're pretty obvious, but  there were several items I made
"mental" notes about reverse order on install and which bolts had
tabs attached for securing cables, etc. and the "mental" notes are a
bit hard to read this morning.  Maybe another cup of coffee and a
sweet roll will remove some of the blurriness...

As for the hangar, I'm lucky to be in the FBO heated and well lit
hangar and the cleanliness is just a matter of picking up after
myself.  After 49 years of marriage some training is hard to ignore. :-)

Robert, I agree with Larry. I'm actually at the same spot you are. Larry was
going to fly over today and help me glass the bottom side of one of my wings
but last night I was working on the trailing edge and decided I didn't like how
it turned out. I called Larry to tell him and still wanted him to fly over to
have another set of eyes to look at it but the wind forecast was to strong at
his place. So we talked for a while and came up with some good ideas.
