Re: [lace] 16th century bobbin on ebay???
Hi Clay and All, This bobbin is very similar in shape to one of the bobbins recovered from the 'Batavia' ship wreck off Australia. It was a Dutch ship wrecked off the west coast of Australia in 1629, so the bobbins were older than that. They were featured on an Australian stamp some years ago and Kleinhout make reproductions of them. It would be interesting to see if there is a Dutch connection to this bobbin. [lace] LPS Withof Class
I tried to post this several days ago, but I haven't seen it come through. My apologies if this is a duplicate. The members of Lacemakers of Puget Sound were fortunate to host Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof on August 7-9, 2004 for a wonderful Withof Lace class. I have put some pictures on two web pages for your viewing enjoyment. The first page shows several examples of Withof Lace (and one drop-dead gorgeous handkerchief in Duchesse Lace), and there is a link to another page with photos of the students in the class and a couple of versions of our class project. http://homepage.mac.com/bejoyce/withof Enjoy! I keep jumping in offering opinions on Continental Bobbins for which I am clearly not an expert. I will argue with peoples opinions on English bobbins, but I am on shaky grounds in this area. The bobbin could well be old and I think that the seller might have got their date from an illustration in Bodil Tornehave's book Danske Frihandskniplinger, pg 17. She has some illustrations there of bobbins excavated from middens that date from 1550 through to abut 1680. I find that this illustration a great source of inspiration and if I was not so lazy and preoccupied with other things there are a great number of speculations one could make about those bobbins and lace dating and English lace bobbin origins. All wildly speculative, but still very interesting (to me at least!) For those who have the book it looks like the one on the far right with the pointed knob missing. More to the point it has all the hallmarks of the Batavia bobbins I think I have a web page hosted by somebody about that somewhere ( I have not looked at my own web site for years!!) [ aren't you ladies glad that you are not married to a lazy tyke like me!] Try the lace Fairy site. What I do observe is that bobbin shape seems to have stayed available for a number of years.. but I am sure that out Danish members will put us right on this one. The bidders IDs show up in the bid history - and you haven't hidden your identity under a pseudonym. True. Should I? Did you know that Kleinhout in Holland sell bobbins of several countries, including Danish? Several of us have dealt with them very satisfactorily. I know. [lace] 'DVT'
Dear Arachnions, Whilst talking about the wonderful, but very tiring tour in the Czech Republic this summer at OIDFA 2004, the question of the length of time we spent sitting in the coaches came up. A fellow lacemaker said did you take your support stockings with?. My reply was of course not, it was a coach and not a 'plane. However, it was the time spent with legs in the same position that mattered. This led me to think of the time we sometimes sit at our pillows when we are concentrating. This can indeed be 2-3 hours or longer and DVT(deep vein thrombosis) is a problem that we should be aware of. Not wishing to be alarmist, doctors now suggest that we look at all situations where one sits for long periods without proper movement and exercise of the lower limbs. Again think of the courses one attends where the desire is to get as much lace done as possible while the tutor is there. The laces which we saw across the country while on the tour in the museums, schools and galleries were amazingThe modern laces whether for wearing as accessories , pictures, wall hangings etc. were always eye-openers as to what one can make with only half-a-dozen pairs; the subtle use of colours and their blending again are so different to the traditional laces that we know so much more about. The Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague had a special display for the Congress. But, on the third floor were the antique laces and some coming down to modern times. These were displayed in floor cabinets, with a selection under glass on the top to whet one's appetite. There were units with drawers full of lace from all over Europe; another was filled with South Bohemian lace which went from the very simple(see below) to the more complex using the same technique of the tape doubling back on itself. The whole floor was a treasure trove. Unfortunately there were no postcards or catalogues available of the lace. The area also had displays of clothing, shoes and other accessories. The first two items one saw on entering was a matching tea gown and coat in Irish Crochet Lace. The only problem about a short visit such as we had was the fact that we were unable to spend more time looking at the various exhibitions all over the country. We also went into Slovakia (Bratislava). Here we went into the National Museum on the banks of the Danube. Many of the works were by Elena Holéczyova. Also there were paintings that children had done in classes held in the museum. All I can say is that if you can get to see any of the places which we visited do. Most of the towns will be on the Czech Tourist Board site I would think and maybe you could do the tour at a more leisurely pace. [lace] queen elizabeth book
Hi Susan - this isn't anything to do with crochet hooks, but I wondered if you had got a message I sent ages ago about a book I had read about the life of Elizabeth I. I know there had been a long exchange about her at one time, and you had mentioned you were interested in her. About 2 years ago, I tried using fishing line for spangling and liked the results so much that that's all I use now. I went to my local shop that caters to fishermen and fly-tiers and got the thinest line they sold, which was an 8 pound test. I asked how much it cost a metre and was asked how many metres I wanted. [lace] IOLI Convention
Hi All, I got to sleep late today so I don't feel like a zombie woman anymore. Finally a chance to write e-mail. Sumac and I had a fabulous time at the IOLI Convention. We met many arachnes and other wonderful lace makers! Devon and I got to have dinner together by chance one night - what fun to talk lace research and detective work G. The drive took longer than expected (traffic tie-ups, etc.) so we were late for the Teacher Merchant night. I did get to meet Angela and her daughter Jane briefly and Angela signed my copy of Romanian Point Lace. What *beautiful* samples she had to show!! We missed the arachne get-together that night. I was zooming once we got there and didn't realize the time until it was too late : ( We saw LOTS of lace! I forgot to grab the woman with the Carrickmacross vest with a Carousel and carousel animals - including giraffes - on it. I really wanted a closer look! I loved the pieces in the exhibit but didn't get back to see who made what. I gather that was noted after we voted. I look forward to seeing the pieces in the Bulletin. Sumac took two tatting classes and made incredible pieces. One class was inverted tatting. Forgive me if I get this wrong but I'll try to explain. One piece is made with long picots. The other side has long picots and they are attached to the ends of the first picots. It looks a little like Needle Lace. Her other class was Pearl Tatting which makes picots on both sides of the main cord. That looks like another NL stitch to me. Both very cool new ideas for tatting (new to me anyway). Her teacher was Judith Connors from Australia. I had wonderful students and much fun teaching them Battenberg lace G. I had two days off and spent one in the library in downtown Harrisburg. A tatter had been there to see what they had too. I spent time with Harper's Bazaar magazine from 1892 and got a lot of good leads from the Reference Librarian. I'm so grateful I usually get to see the actual issues, microfilm is not quite so convenient. And I need a lot of practice making copies from it. Nevertheless I found some interesting things! The whole Convention was great, great fun for us! What a treat to be in Lace Land for a week! I must say I don't know how those of you in the UK go to that Christmas Lace Fair (NEC?). I was dazzled enough with all the vendors in Harrisburg and pictures from that Fair looks 20 times (or more) as big! I'd probably self-combust before I could buy anything! [lace] IOLI Convention/Tina
Finally I have completed reading all the back digests that accumulated whilst I was off to convention. We drove so it took an extra 3+ days but was good fun. 3 lacemakers in a van, taking turns, one to drive whilst the other two knit, can't have idle hands!! I made one and a half scarves. I bought Tina towards the end of the week, by which time one of my room-mates had almost read the novel. I have to say that it is a beautiful book and the weight is due in main part to the superior quality of paper used so that pictures did not bleed through. I have not read the novel yet as I tend to want to finish one book before starting another but I did read the forward and was impressed by how much work was involved in getting the project together. It is sitting proudly on my ottoman which doubles as a coffee table, because it deserves to be seen rather than languish on a shelf. Congratulations to the Rocky Mountain Guild (RMG). I hope we can come up with something more than knitting scarves for fundraising for the 2008 convention. For those ordering Tina by mail, there is one consolation, you will save on your sales tax if you live outside of Colorado. We had to pay $1.50 in sales tax buying it at the convention! My Prairie Mill Lacemakers guild in Belvidere, Illinois became a chartered guild this convention and also were accepted as hosts for the 2008 convention which we will be holding the last week of July. Tentatively we have a hotel in Crystal Lake, my town of residence, which is about 50 miles northwest of Chicago, so guess where some of our tours will be. :-) Although there were negatives about the convention, on the whole my group all had a good time. I enjoyed my two workshops with Gil Dye and my torchon wool scarf is probably getting close to 3 feet long, more if you include the fringe that I started with. One negative was the fact that the display room and sales rooms did not always open at the times posted. Very annoying, especially as I rushed down at 7:30 am on the Saturday to do my last minute shopping, only to find a scribbled notice that it would not open until 10 am to 1 pm. No use to me as my computer class was held at the Harrisburg Penn State college and we did not get back until almost 5 pm. Also I was unable to see who had made what in the competition as the names were only revealed late in the week, first time I have not entered in years so no pressure on me. One plus was the ability to reserve a banquet table if we had 10 people. My group joined with the RMG group and Sumac and Jane Viking Stover made up o ur 10. I hope RMG remember to use that idea for their banquet, saves trying to rush in to grab a table. Most of the few favors we got this year also seemed to come from the RMG, so thanks girls. We did get a set of two note/gift cards with tatting on them but I did not see who had contributed them. Some people enjoyed the afternoon breaks which included food, but as I was usually intent on working my lace I was always late and by that time not much was left,as is the problem with buffet type events, which as most of my friends know I detest, and I promise that I will do everything in my power not to have a buffet in 2008! All in all, a good convention, hard on the pocketbook (purse) as I finally decided to buy a Simone Tousteou pillow, and if I had to spend that much money I decided to go for his Cadilac of pillows, a large roller pillow with 3 drawers, not much change out of $300! I will have to find a worthy piece of lace for this pillow! I am now looking forward to meeting Yvonne Scheele Kirkhof on Wednesday when I meet her at O'Hare airport for our Beds/Whitof class at LACE later in the week. Pity her class was cancelled at convention but at least she decided to do her little post convention tour as arranged before the cancellation. [lace-chat] SP thank you
dear secret pal good news: i went to the post office this morning to get my parcel from Australia bad news : it was open and when i checked with the list you had written on the green label the ornament was missing and also probably the card :i had the CD ( fantastic . i'll take it with me to my office . it'll add the touch of nature needed to make work tolerable ) the note pad with its gorgeous soft coloured frog , the pencil , the little book of calm (very useful . i'll carry it in my pocket to have a quick look when needed .. VBG) and the three skeins of cotton thread .(such pretty colours) ... it seems i shouldn't have taken the parcel but sent it back to sender so you could file a complaint on your side of the planet ... it wasn't the same clerk behing the counter when i went back to the post office to say something had been stolen and she nearly accused me of cheating .. i came out fuming ... but i live in a part of town where some people make a living out of such things so . she wasn't entirely wrong ... i have kept the envelope . if you need it just tell me and i'll post it back .. this makes me wonder whether the July envelope will reach me at all ... but it doesnt matter . i know it left Australia and you didn't forget me .. the Post Office is not what it used to be .. a lot of thanks again wondering what september is keeping in store for us ... hugs dominique To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] Olympics
Hi All, I'm back from the IOLI Convention and finally got to sleep late today so I can write e-mail G. Anyway, I watched the beginning of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics last night. I may have the end on tape but I'm not sure. I loved what I saw. The people made up like statues were fascinating to me. And they looked like Minoan sculptures and the other things they were supposed to look like! The math part was neat and I saw a hula hoop that was like a giant Slinky (spring)! I really love seeing some of the techniques used for stage shows - one group of women had on dresses with three flounces made of board or something and the flounces moved independentely of each other. There were also waves done in the same manner. I have a note here about fish in the sea but I don't know what that means G. Now I'm watching the opening day events and trying to figure out what channels have Olympics on them. We have cable because otherwise you don't get anything here. So far I've found three channels with different sports on them. I got to see the Thorpedo in one swimming heat G. Wasn't he about 18 at the Sydney Olympics? He looks like a handsome man now! Actually there is quite a bit of eye candy VBG. Jane in Vermont, USA where the sun is out!! Rain from the next hurricane is on the way :( I hope all the lacers in the path of that are doing okay!
