A Queenslander is drinking in a West Aussie bar when he gets a call on his
mobile phone. He hangs up, grinning from ear to ear, he orders a round of
drinks for everyone in the bar, because, he announces his wife has just
produced a typical baby boy weighing 25 pounds.

Nobody can believe that any baby can weigh in at 25 pounds, but the
Queenslander just shrugs, That's about average in Queensland. Like said,
my
boy is a typical Queensland baby boy.

Congratulations showered him from all around and many exclamations of
STREWTH were heard. One woman even fainted due to sympathy pains.

Two weeks later the Queenslander returns to the bar. The bartender says
You're the father of that typical Queensland baby that weighed 25 pounds
at
birth. Everybody's been having bets about how big he'd be in 2 weeks. We
were going to call you. So, how much does he weigh?

The proud father answers, ³17 pounds The bartender is puzzled and
concerned.
What happened? He weighed 25 pounds the day he was born.

The Queensland father takes a long s-l-o-w swig from his , wipes his
lips
on his shirt sleeve, leans onto the bar and proudly says...

[lace] lace tools

2006-03-11 Thread Jenny Barron
Just discovered a new lace tool today. I bought a needle tugger meant for
pulling needles through thick fabric and spotted the potential for pulling pins
out of the pillow - I'd use tweezers but it puts my teeth on edge - it's
basically a thin plastic tube you put over the pin and pinch and then pull out.
I suffer from nails that peel and shred when I pull out any quantity of pins so
I think this is going to save my nails

[lace] redrafting pricking

I am having another go at a bucks (my bete noir) garter. (Torchon is my
favourite lace - I think because of its orderliness) So I've found a pretty
garter in an old magazine and am at the stage of photocopying the pattern to
prick out. The thing is the pricking looks out of sync to me. Are there any
computer programmes - lace design or some sort of graphic package - that will
allow me to scan the pricking and true up the dots?I'm not being fanatical
about this - if I have to redraft it with pen and paper I'll live with itg.
I'd be grateful for any advice

If it's a Torchon pattren -- no problem. It looks the same if you work

diagram. Alternatively, it is also no problem, if you're a whiz at

[lace-chat] Friday AM Smiles....

2005-10-26 Thread Jenny Barron
well it's really Wednesday morning smiles, no 9 does it for me

 HOME REMEDIES...
 1. If you are choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a cup of
boiling water down your throat and presto! The blockage will be almost
instantly removed.

 2. Clumsy? Avoid cutting yourself while slicing vegetables by getting someone
else to hold them while you chop away.

 3. Avoid arguments with the Mrs. about lifting the toilet seat by simply using
the sink.

 4. High blood pressure sufferers: simply cut yourself and bleed for a while,
thus reducing the pressure in your veins.

 5. A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from
rolling over and going back to sleep when you hit the snooze button.

 6. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives, then you will be
afraid to
 cough.

7. Have a bad tooth ache? Hit your thumb with a hammer, then you will forget
about the tooth ache..

 8. AND... Sometimes we just need to remember what The Rules of Life really are:

 9. You need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it
should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

10. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.

11. If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You have another chance!

12. And finally... Be really good to your family and friends.

You never know when you are going to need them to empty your bedpan.

[lace] Pillow Bag

2005-10-05 Thread Jenny Barron
Thanks for all the advice about pillow bags, I've just finished making the one
Clay recommended and I'm impressed - with the concept not particularly the
execution, my dressmaking skills are very rusty - it's a very adaptable shape
and it's taking my largest round pillow, I think it's a 24inch, with ease. I
think I'll make a smaller one for my littlest round pillow - can't resist
fiddling about with patterns to see how I can adapt things.

Hi Jenny

Imagine a cross like the Red Cross cross - nice big and fat with thick arms
and a thick bit in the centre of the cross. The centre square bit bit is
the square that you put your pillow on and then the arms of the cross fold
over. 2 of them will just cover the pillow to keep it clean and the other 2
arms of the cross have a handle in them at the far outside edges of the
arms. They meet and form the handles when you fold then in towards the
centre. The handles are usually just a bit of dowel or even a posh bit of
timber which is fed into the entire edge of the outside of the last 2 arms
and they have a D shaped cut out of the fabric so you can grasp the
handle.

Hope that helps.

[lace] pillow bag

2005-09-30 Thread Jenny Barron
I fancy making a new pillow bag for myself out of some patchwork I am about to
quilt - new hobby, must make use of practice pieces - and I thought instead of
the normal bag that puts the pillow on it's side when being carried I'd like
the kind that leaves the pillow flat.

But - now I come to the actual planning of such a bag I realise I've no real
idea of how to make one. Do you start with a square of fabric big enough to
place the pillow in the middle and fold the corners over the pillow with a bit
to spare? Anyone ever made one who could point me in the right direction?

Last Saturday night; a young chap was walking home from a club.

It was a cold, wet, windy evening, and he was tired and freezing.
Most of the streetlights in the area were broken, and the silence was
only broken by the occasional sound of a stray cat sifting through a
dustbin.
Then suddenly he heard a strange noise...

BUMP

BUMP

BUMP

Startled by this, he turned, and to his amazement, through the driving
rain, he saw the faint outline of a large box turning into his road.

BUMP

BUMP

BUMP

He froze to the spot, he couldn't believe his eyes, as the box
approached from the shadows, he was able to make out its shape more
clearlyIt was a coffin.

Not wanting anything to do with this, he put his head down and started
walking briskly home.

BUMP

BUMP

BUMP

He could feel the coffin gaining on him, he started walking
faster.

BUMPBUMP..

BUMPBUMP.

BUMPBUMP..

The coffin was closing with his every step, he started to jog, but he
heard the coffin speed up after him..

BUMPBUMP..BUMP..

BUMPBUMP..BUMP..

BUMPBUMP..BUMP..

He started to sprint, but so did the coffin .

BUMP...BUMP...BUMP...BUMP.

BUMP...BUMP...BUMP...BUMP.

BUMP...BUMP...BUMP...BUMP.

Eventually he made it to his front door, but he knew the coffin was Only
seconds behind. Fumbling around in his pocket, he pulled out his keys,
His hand trembling, he managed to open the lock, he dived inside
slamming The front door behind him. He shot into his front room, and
lumped into his comfy chair.

Suddenly there was a loud crash, as the coffin smashed its way through
the front door. The force of the impact broke the lock off the coffin
allowing the lid to swing freely on its rusty hinges as it continued Its
chase.

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

In horror the young lad fled again, as fast as his shaking legs could
take him he bolted upstairs to the bathroom and locked the door

BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...

BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...

BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...

The coffin again gave chase up the stairs, across the landing and
launched itself at the bathroom door. With an almighty smash, the
Bathroom door flew off its hinges

The coffin stood in the doorway, then started to approach the
young terrified lad.

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

In a last ditch attempt to save his skin, he reached for his bathroom
cabinet..

He grabbed a bar of Imperial Leather soap and threw it at the
coffin...still it came .

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

He grabbed his can of Lynx deodorant and threw it .

Still it came..

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

He grabbed his first aid kit and threw it .still it came..

He grabbed some Benelyn cough mixture and threw it

The coffin stopped.

apologies for this, my DH sent me this

sunny Scotland

One day God calls down to Noah and says, Noah me old china, I want you to
make me a new Ark.

Noah replies, No probs fella, anything you want - after all you're the
guv'nor.

But God interrupts, Ah, but there's a catch son. This time Noah, I don't
want just a couple of decks... I want 20 decks - one on top of the other.

20 DECKS!! screams Noah Well, OK Big Man, whatever you say. Should I fill
it up with all the animals just like last time?

Yep, that's right, well... erm... sort of right. This time I want you to
fill it up with fish, God answers.

Fish? queries Noah.

Yes, fish. Little things.. that swim in sea's and stuff. You know 'em.
Well, actually, to make it more specific Noah, I want carp... wall to wall,
floor to ceiling.. CARP!

Noah looks to the skies. OK God, me old mucker. Let me get this right then
geez, you want a New Ark?

Check.

With 20 decks, one on top of the other?

Correct.

And you want it full of Carp?

Oh yes.

But why?, asks the perplexed Noah, who was slowly but surely getting to
the end of his tether.

God replies:

Scroll down everyone! It's possibly the best ever

God say's, I dunno really... I just fancied a Multi-Storey Carp Ark.

Yours, plowing through the entire series (now that I've finally
assembled all its ingredients and can read the books in order) of the
detective feats of the 17th c samurai Sano Ichiro, and learning bits
about the political system of Japan of that time.

that sounds interesting Tamara, I loved Robert Van Gulik's Judge Dee series set
in 7th century China - are there many books in the series? Is it also a trait
of lacemakers that we have to read books in orderg. I have to confess I will
not read part of a series of books - even if they are stand alone books - if I
cannot get them all, I'm sure I miss out on books that I would love but I can't

The holes in the garter are very small and will only take 4mm size elastic

can't help with the elastic but try cake decorating shops for thin ribbon, they

[lace-chat] Fwd: Fw: History Lesson

2005-03-31 Thread Jenny Barron
I'm not sure how many of these I believe but they sound plausible

jenny barron

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the
Water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things
used to be.

Here are some facts about the 1500s:

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath
in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were
Starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the
body odour.
Hence the custom of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The
man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all
the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last
of all, the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually
lose someone in it.
Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood
underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the
cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it
rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and off
the roof. Hence the saying It’s raining
cats and dogs.

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This
posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings
could mess up your nice clean bed.
Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some
protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt.
Hence the saying dirt poor.

The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when
wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing.
As the winter wore on, they adding more thresh until when you opened
the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was
placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying a 'thresh
hold.

Getting quite an education so far?

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that
always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things
to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They
would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold
overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in
it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas
porridge hot,
peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old.

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special.
When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off.
This was a sign of wealth. A man could bring home the bacon. They
would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around
and chew the fat.
Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content
caused some of the lead to leach onto the food,
causing lead poisoning deaths. This happened most often with tomatoes,
so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of
the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or upper
crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The
combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of
days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and
prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a
couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and
wait and see if they would wake up.
Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of
places to bury people. They would dig up coffins and would take the
bones to a bone-house and re-use the grave.
When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have
scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying
people alive.
They would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the
coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would
have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to
listen for the bell; thus, someone could be saved by the bell or was
considered a dead ringer.

A blonde was driving home after work, and got caught in a really bad
hailstorm. Her car was covered with dents, so the next day she took it
to the repair shop.

The shop owner saw that she was a blonde, and decided to have some fun.
He told her just to go home and blow into the tail pipe really hard,
and all the dents would pop out.

So, the blonde went home, got down on her hands and knees and started
blowing into her car's tailpipe. Nothing happened. She blew a little
harder, and still nothing happened.

Her roommate, another blonde, came home and asked,What are you
doing?
The first blonde told her how the repairman had instructed her to blow
into the tailpipe in order to get all the dents to pop out.

Her roommate rolled her eyes and said...HEL-L
You gotta roll the windows up first!

I teach my students to use proper pricking card (glazed
manila) and a waterproof pen.

I must admit to coming back to proper pricking card. The photocopying of and
then covering a pricking with film is very easy to do but I really come unstuck
when doing sewings. I use a lazy susan, it might be different with a crochet
hook, and almost always end up with the business end stuck in the pin hole and
making a mess. Pricking card being so much sturdier makes sewings a lot
cleaner and easier. This is more important for sectional laces with a lot of
sewings.

[lace] lace ufo's

2005-02-26 Thread Jenny Barron
Hi, I'm slowly progressing with my longest running UFO - pattern no 8 from
Syllabus Grof (Brugs) Bloemwerk by Sonia Vanoosterwijck, that's the Bruges mat
on the cover - which I started on 1/1/2000. I did a bit of the middle motif
that year and for one reason or other shelved it but have now finished the
middle motif and an working the flowers etc that surround it. I'm doing it in
Bockens 50/2 linen in white. I've just been working in daylight for the first
time and noticed a difference in the lace I made 5 years ago and the flower I
just finished. The new flower is bright white and the older lace is not, I'd
say it has a creamier colour now, not yellowish though.

Would that be an oxidation/natural aging process do you think? It was covered
well when I wasn't working on it so I'm assuming it's not exposure to light.
I'm hoping that as I work it -maybe finishing it at some pointg all the
thread will end up the same shade. It's not nearly obvious enough for me to
abandon it but I'm curious.

Re: [lace] ufo's - Acid burn? Newbies - please note!

2005-02-26 Thread Jenny Barron
Newbies: You might like to print out these instructions and keep them for
future reference.

Never mind newbies, I've printed them out and put them in the syllabus so that
when I finish the lace I can refer to them. Most of the points don't apply but
it is a polystyrene pillow with a plastic covered paper pricking so that's
probably what's affected the thread. It is very slight and only noticable in
good daylight so I think I'll press on and wash carefully. I'll let you know
how it works out - just don't hold your breathg I'll try to speed up but the
pillow is really too big to comfortably work Bruges on, it's a block pillow and
really I prefer a round one. It may be worth swopping pillows. Thank you Jeri
for the advice.
