[lace] IOLI Convention

2023-06-28 Thread ROBERT MORRIS
Hello from Reno. I am un-lurking to say what a pleasure it was to meet with
the Arachne group last night at the IOLI Convention. Thank you to Janice Blair
for setting up the meeting. It was good to see people I first met in
Arachne’s early days.

I am enjoying Convention and taking Holly Van Sciver’s Honiton class. Making
a little butterfly from the Devon Lace Teachers/Lave Guild booklet.

Warmly,

[lace] IOLI Convention 2022

2022-07-23 Thread Janice Blair
We finally had an in person meeting. There were seven of us who got together
and had a good chat. It was lovely to see people who I had not seen for many
years, including Penny Boston and Nancy Neff. I managed to recognise both even
though we were wearing our masks. Rosemary Horr couldn't join us as she was
manning the display room but she did send a pair of bone Midlands bobbins for
our raffle. Hopefully next year we will have a larger group in Reno, Nevada.

[lace] IOLI Convention Arachne Get together lunch

2019-07-08 Thread Janice Blair
I have heard from the hotel that we can hold our luncheon Tuesday, here is an
excerpt from the email:
"We have decide to put your “informal” lunch get together in our Max
Lounge, the number of the area will be what we call the 600’s (it is a
raised area where we have our entertainers perform from on the weekends, this
is not a private area but at least area at the end or our Lounge area."

The hotel are organising box lunches or some sort of quick pick lunches that
we can pick up and take to the area once we get out of class. Hopefully the
area will not be too noisy and we can do our usual introductions and raffle.
I also asked for trash cans so we can clean up after ourselves. Looking
forward to seeing you all soon.

I am doing a Happy Dance – here in chilly, damp, wintery Melbourne, Oz., as
I have just received a letter from the Convention Registrar to tell me I have
been entered in my First Choice class – mornings with Karen Bovard Sayre,
and also we got into our first choice of tour on the Wednesday – to the
silver 7 Gold mines!!

I better sort out a variety of shuttles, as we do a different piece each
morning! I should learn Lots – 4 pieces in 4 days!!

I forgot to mention, when writing about the 25 year anniversary of Arachne, -
that I have 2 tops – a t-shirt and a polo shirt that were yearly
commemorative pieces! I wear them with pride, and love of the List.

It’s a weird thing - but try checking on different days of the week. Honestly!
Tuesday is a really good day to check. Plus it’s a lng time until
Convention, and there are often seat sales in the winter-time. I’m no expert;
these are just things I’ve noticed over the years.

We are home, safe and sound, after a Great week in San Antonio, Texas, --
although it was “Mighty Hot” – especially after leaving our very cold
Aussie winter!!

Thank you, Janice , for again organizing an Arachne Lunch, although a few
people missed the announcement of the lunch venue and time. It was fun to
meet up with other Arachnids, and meet face-to-face.

The friendships made at these Conventions are Wonderful, and it is great to
see there is still some good in the world, as all we seem to hear about are
the bad things. Lacemakers the world over are such lovely people.

[lace] IOLI Convention & Magazine

2018-07-11 Thread Liz Ligeti.
We are gearing up for our trip first to Texas and then on to Seattle to visit
family!
We get to San Antonio a couple of days early, to give us time to get over
Jet-lag, so we will have a look around, Janice, to see if there is room for an
Arachne lunch! I have already purchased a small gift to bring!

And I have 6 small (4½ inch) fans for the display. They are in 6 different
laces! I finished the tatted one recently. I am doing the afternoon Tatting
class, so there is not a lot of equipment to bring – I just had to finish a
couple of UFOs so I had empty shuttles ready for class!! At least it got me
finishing things, rather than starting another UFO (I am good at that!! 😊
)

We are looking forward to the trip, - and thawing out a bit! It is mid winter
over here, and very cold, (after a long very hot summer), and Texas should be
nice and warm!! So we are searching out our summer clothes to bring!

I, too, prefer the paper version of magazines. I get various Newsletters on
the computer, but I hope the Magazines stay with a paper version, which can be
pickled up at any time, where as this computer is shared, so I can’t always
access it, if DH is on it. I have the past magazines in holders here on the
shelf, and I can go back to them whenever I want to – easily and without any
fuss!!

Regards from Liz. In cold Melbourne, Oz.

2018-07-11 Thread Ruth Lyon
I am also gathering bobbins. threads, etc. and preparing prickings classes
at the IOLI convention. I've cleared a pillow to take with me. The more
pillows I buy, the more unfinished projects I have!

My classes are Flanders morning and afternoon with Kathy Kauffman, and
Buttons and Braids with Gil Dye on Weds. I was so glad to get my first
choice classes!

I'm looking for a good lamp to use in class. The base can't be large but
it should be stable. A clip-on lamp would work on my lace table. Any
suggestions?

I really hope that we will have an Arachne lunch or other gathering during
the convention. Last year's lunch was so nice--thanks, Arlene! i hope to
bring raffle gifts, too.

Finally, I think I will opt for the printed IOLI magazine rather than the
online version. I would probably want to print much of it and put it in
binders, so paying a little more for the printed mag. makes sense to me.

Well, it is almost here. I spent the afternoon gathering my bobbins and threads
from my stash for my classes at the IOLI convention in San Antonio, Texas.
Taking Hinajosa, Amelia Ars and the Idjria jewelry class on Wednesday. What
are you taking?

Unfortunately I have not heard back from the local co-hosts regarding a space
for our Arachne get together, unlike last year when it was all arranged for us
(thank you). The hotel has a lunch buffet arranged, but I don't know if we
might be able to sit together. If anyone arrives before Saturday and has time
to look around, maybe they can spot a place for us to gather. If not lunch,
maybe we can hang around after the dinner on Monday as we will have had time to
hit the sales rooms earlier. It could be announced at the opening reception or
the Monday dinner. I'm bringing some items for our free raffle just in case we
do meet.

I will be bringing a couple of items for the display room but will not be
entering the competition this year. I am sure there will be lots of entries
though. I already have made 3 fans and don't need any more.

I had the whole month of May showing my lace pieces in the lobby of the
clubhouse of our subdivision, changing the display once during in the month. It
was well received and I got many compliments from people who have never seen
hand made lace before. On International Lacemaking day I sat in the atrium
during the afternoon and had lots of interest.

[lace] IOLI Convention

2017-07-24 Thread Janice Blair
In answer to Jeri's plea, I finally received the digest in which Arlene's and
Susan's reports arrived. Arlene is featured first, so Susan was second to get
her report in, and finally having some time after dealing with laundry and
putting away all my lace goodies, I am sending my report.

I want to thank Arlene for all she did for the Arachne lunch. She arranged for
the tables to be put together and had the Arachne name on stands on each group
of tables. She put out the photocopies of the book from the Arizona site, each
in a plastic file holder so they did not get spoilt by the food we placed on
top. Her raffle was very well organized and I say this, not because my name
was drawn early in the proceedings, but everyone went home with a prize. Liz
arrived just as we were packing up but she was able to go home with something
as well. It was great to see so many Arachne members at the lunch.

I took the morning Lier class and worked on it during the afternoon in my room.
The maid, who was from Haiti, liked to watch me work and although it was
difficult to understand her, she was familia with tambour work. One question I
have, does anyone know what type of starch should be used to stiffen a piece
that is going to be a pendant, and is there something suitable in the US? I
usually use strong hold perfume free hair spray but I don't think that will be
firm enough. Greet mentioned "dab" or "dip" but I haven't found anything by
those names in a search online. None of the vendors had starch to my knowledge.

I enjoyed the whole week and I think we were overwhelmed with goodies at the
meals. Those items that I will not keep will be passed on to my guild members.
The meals were all good and the entertainment at the banquet was very lively.
Being old, I was able to sing along with the band as I remember many of the
songs from when I was a girl from radio.

I was genuinely surprised to receive the first prize for the original design
for my small, simple needlelace necklace. There were many entries in the
competitions this year and I breathed a sigh of relief when the tatted necklace
I had admired all week turned out to win the Doris Southward award for
professional lacemakers. I thought that would win but had not noticed which
category it was in.

My room mate and I did our own tour on Wednesday to downtown Philadelphia. We
caught the bus outside the hotel and the drivers in both directions allowed us
to ride free as we are seniors even though we did not have a PA pass. We saw
the Liberty Bell close up, the house where the Declaration of Independence was
drafted by Thomas Jefferson and the house where Betsy Ross sewed the flag, and
a number of other sights. We ate lunch at Reading Market which was a great
place for people watching. Although it was hot, we walked in the shade of the
tall buildings and all the places we visited were air conditioned, so we
survived and had a good day.

Next year convention will be in San Antonio, Texas the last week of July. The
fan style invitation quotes it will be "hotter than a jalapeño". The following
year, 2019, will be in Walla Walla, Washington. That is just north of the
Oregon border in the eastern part of Washington state. Should be an interesting
journey getting there.

[lace] IOLI convention musings

2017-07-24 Thread Anita Hansen
This year my husband tagged along with me to the IOLI convention in order to
spend a couple of days before the convention in Boston visiting our daughter. I
warned him I would be busy with activities throughout the week so he needed to
make plans to keep himself amused. He visited Valley Forge park twice, a train
museum and Winterthur Museum on Friday. I carved out time Tuesday to go to
dinner with him and 3 ladies came along too. (The benefit of having a car!) I
also was able to take Wednesday off from the convention and we saw some sights
in downtown Philly including the Liberty Bell, Indpendance Hall, the Mint and
Ben Franklin wandering the street near his gravesite.
This year convention was extra busy for me as it was my first time as the IOLI
Supply chair and responsible for making sure our IOLI table in the vending room
was staffed and had the money pouch. Molly Heller, the Membership Chair, and I
have some ideas about improving things for next year. Alas, I only passed by
the exhibit room twice and never made it inside to see the beautiful items.
Luckily the contest items were on display at the banquet. This Saturday I will
have a leisurely look at the People's Choice winning piece as it was done by
our guild's own Sally Olsen.
This year my morning class was Milanese with Louise Colgan and thoroughly
enjoyed working on an adorable hedgehog design. I hope to finish it up yet this
week. My afternoons were spent reacquainting myself with Chantilly in Ulrike
Voehlker's class. Since I will likely be flying to San Antonio next year I
will stick with one technique for the week and not two! But which?
It was nice to once again have delightful table favors at each meal! I need to
dig through my bag to see what all we got! Sunday we received handmade lace
earring which I wore to the Monday dinner. I believe the "pearls" were in our
nice blue registration totes, both gifts from the host group. At the banquet
we each received a beautiful wooden pin box. It took some of us a little more
time than others to figure out how to open it! lol
My thanks to the Media gals who provided daily photo updates on the Facebook
page. And thanks to fellow Arachnids for their reports here! Thanks also go to
Arlene for organizing our lunch! What a great turnout! All in all it was a
great convention and I am already looking forward to next year! (My husband has
already declared he is staying home. lol)

[lace] IOLI Convention Report

2017-07-24 Thread Lbuyred
I was in the wire lace class along with Susan and I agree that we had a
wonderful time. I think the organizers did an excellent job. The food was
good, the rooms were comfortable, the shopping was great and the entertainment
at the closing banquet was the best! There were literally people up dancing
around the room. What fun!

Dear Devon,

You did not receive the Arlene Cohen memo, even on your gmail account. I
did not receive it on my aol account.

Further, though a wonderful 7/23/17 account of the IOLI convention from
Susan Hottle to Arachne was received as new mail, I could not find it in the
Arachne archive earlier this morning, or now. Refreshed the page, but that
did not result in any change.

Puzzling why some things are archived on Arachne, and others are not.

Devon, perhaps you could post the 2017 photo of the Arachne meeting on our
Flickr. There is a section there containing previous ones, and Sue Babbs
is always willing to give assistance.

But, Lorelei was thanked by Loretta Holzberger, IOLI Vice President and
chairman of the Media Committee for her work on the LaceIOLI Ning site. Since
I was documenting everything for the International Organization of Lace’s

I am never entirely sure that the person being thanked from the podium knows

Re: [lace] IOLI convention news

2017-07-23 Thread Jeriames
Right again! I was just saying to a friend that it would be Susan Hottle
who would be the first to share her experiences at the IOLI Convention.
Should have put money on the prediction.

Where are all of you who have been so helped here on Arachne? Some
additional feedback would be lovely. It is unfair for Susan to be expected to
bring us the only "news" report.

A few of us who know a lot about lace and some about computer "diseases"
have been repeatedly warned about FaceBook's security lapses. We do not
subscribe and are unlikely to do so. In my 80th year, I have no intention of
being painted into a corner - to join.

Members expect IOLI's Bulletins to fulfill the responsibility of bringing
printed news to us, and I hope the new Editor will receive a lot of help.
This is an unpaid volunteer position (and Editors are the ones who usually
do the lion's share of work for any guild). Thank Heaven a volunteer for
this critical position has come forward, because the need has been great and
this is the permanent way IOLI documents its history from year-to-year.
For those who do not attend conventions, the Bulletin is often the only
contact they have with IOLI.

My pleas for help in bringing the lace of today to the world always fall on
deaf ears (witness the dearth of sharing on Arachne). Please help the new
Editor to keep the IOLI bulletin in print. This is not a one-person job,
and "letting someone else do it all" will not guarantee success.

What an invigorating, whirlwind week! The classes were great & everyone was
pleased with their choices. Lovely earrings, strand of pearls & serenading
Mummers were just a few of our perks. IOLI generously donated packets of back
issues of the Bulletin so I was able to return home with additional useful
resources for my chapter. Win-win & a big thank you to IOLI! Arlene did a
great job organizing our Arachne luncheon & it was very well attended. Jean
Leader modeled her famous black lace tie so we all got to admire it. The lace
display room was astounding--so many competition pieces plus others on exhibit.
Betty MacDonald had a section all to herself--multiple pieces including Starry
Night & one that had rain pelting a barefoot duck wearing a mac. Whimsical &
very effective. Teachers' Showcase was overwhelming--metallic lace bowls, tree
ring inspired lace, avant garde Slovakian lace, Karen Thompson's Ipswich
samples, Jane Atkinson's thistle scarf with tufts & the li!
st went on. Devon posted a large number of photos to IOLI FaceBook so you can
get an idea. Devon's lace exhibit proposal has been accepted by a museum in NJ
& we got to see her presentation. Funding is needed so if you can help or have

OMG--who doesn't love petting new threads, yarn, bobbins & books? If you
didn't attend, please be sure to ask your friends what they liked most. There
was literally something to love around each corner! Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA

The Pennsylvania Germans are known for practicality, but did love
embellishment. Whether it be painted furniture, the vibrant decorated
manuscripts called fraktur or samplers and embroidered linens, the rural
Germans who came to Pennsylvania in the 18th century enjoyed what adding
decoration “just for nice.” What role did lace, and needlework resembling
lace, have in the culture? Candace Perry, Curator of Collections at the

[lace] IOLI Convention - Arachne Lunch

2017-06-09 Thread Jeriames
Dear Arlene,

I am testing to see if you receive a copy of this letter from me directly,
as well as a cc from Arachne. That would be 2 copies in your mail. I did
not receive your original posting of the Arachne gathering, though I found
it in the Arachne archive because Jane wrote to Arachne..

AOL and Yahoo are not on speaking terms, and that may be the answer. Just
another example of how important it is for someone using an ISP other than
those 2 to write a reply via Arachne, as Jane did.

Jane, thank you. Perhaps other people had my experience, and will be at
the Convention. Now they know to write to Arlene (address attached in a
trimmed message from her).

I will not be at convention. There were no needlelace classes, and no
class that I would call "educational" (like Lace ID). I can manage an
educational or needlelace class without having to go back to beginning bobbin
lace
and spending time practicing for a one-time class experience and
unfinished lace to add to all the other unfinished lace examples being given
shelf
space here. I prefer a class experience that I can share later with Arachne
and 9 other lace groups to which I belong. Add 2 embroidery guild
memberships, and you can imagine what fun it is to receive newsletters and
magazines from all these sources.

Thank you, Arlene, for bringing our Arachne members together at the IOLI
Convention. Everyone will have a lot of fun meeting each other.

[lace] IOLI Convention - Arachne lunch

2017-06-09 Thread Arlene Cohen
Hello, all -
As mentioned in a previous message, I am working on organizing a gathering for
any interested Arachne members at the IOLI Convention in July. This will
happen during the lunch time on Tuesday of that week
In considering options for where we should gather for lunch, it would be
really helpful to get at least some sense of how many might be there - a group
of 10 is very different than a group of 30 :-)  Please email me if you are
interested in coming.  You are not committing yourself to anything if
something comes up - I just need some sense of numbers.
I know many probably read my last message (or the message in the digest when
it showed up) and thought, "oh, yes, I need to email her" and then promptly
forgot.  :-)  Trust me, I've organized enough things this way in my life to
know that it takes a few reminder postings by me to get folks to respond.  I
sent a reply email to everyone I received an email from.  If for some reason
you emailed me and did not get a response back from me, please do try again.
I'm also a little concerned that my message did not show up in the Archives.
(Something I've noticed in the past - my messages sometimes show up in the
Archives and sometimes do not and I always use the lace@arachne.com address
and not the one that I know we are not supposed to use.)
Also, if anyone can give any suggestions on how to avoid random gobble-goock
(i.e. extra characters, etc.) from showing up where I've typed spaces and
returns in my messages (as what came through last time), I would appreciate
it!  I've tried looking for a "plain text" option here on Yahoo Message and
can't find anything.  This doesn't happen when I use this email for anything
else.
Looking forward to hearing from many of you and seeing/meeting many of you in
July!Arlene in njabcohen1...@yahoo.com

Re: [lace] IOLI Convention

2017-04-27 Thread lacel...@frontier.com
When I was flying to take a Lier class, I had the same dilemma. I ended up with
a simple, but spendy, solution. I took two of the larger (10 x 15) Instand
tables with the foldup tripod legs. I put one on each side of my frame, and
the middle was completely open for working. The Instand tables will even slant
if a person desires, and adjust in height for different chairs.

Since the stands are metal, the suitcase weighs a bit more so I had to watch
that. I put the tables and legs on top in my suitcase so the TSA could readily
see what was blocking the xray without going through all my things.

These tables are in frequent use for demos and exhibits. They have been a good
investment.

[lace] IOLI convention, airport to hotel ride share?

2016-07-03 Thread Whitham, Irene & Steve
Hello lacemakers,

Is anyone arriving at Indianapolis Airport on Saturday, July 16 around 9:30
am?

I would like to share the taxi ride with other lacemakers.

It appears that the shuttle service organized by convention hosts is only on
Sunday.

Thanks for your suggestions for an Arachne get-together at the IOLI convention.
I think that having lunch together in the food court would work better.

[lace] IOLI Convention Arachne Get Together

2016-05-21 Thread Janice Blair
Found out that we might have two options for our get together this year as the
hotel has a small restaurant and not much room in the lobby, and would charge
us if we wanted to use a room.  As I understand it, the shopping mall is
attached to the hotel with an overpass bridge and they have a food court.  We
could possibly meet at the food court and push some tables together, that way
people can buy their preferred food items, or even take their own unless there
is some rule about not doing that.  I have taken food to my local food court
in the past and no-one has said anything. Monday or Tuesday might be good days
for that.
The other possibility is that we try to get seated with each other at the
Tuesday dinner.  I am hoping to find out if they are having sign up sheets
for meals like we have had the past few years.  That way we can have some
Arachne tables and remain for a short time after the meal and before we go to
the Tat Off.  I will get back to you when I hear further.
Let me have your feedback on those ideas.

[lace] IOLI convention

2016-05-07 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
I will be there, too, for an Arachne meeting, if one can be arranged!! They
are such fun, - and so nice to meet others Arachneans face to face. I even
have a gift ready for a raffle, - if we have a meeting and include a
raffle!!

I, too, have found the ethafoam pillows a wonderful $5 investment when I
come to conventions, as it is impossible to fly long-distance with a pillow
in the suitcase. I have given them away afterwards, as even bringing one
back home was in the "too hard" basket!!

I have had to declare the Bobbins at customs when we get back here. Last
time I said I had lacemakers bobbins the customs guy thought for a moment
then asked if they were "Those stick things" When I said yes, he just waived
me though saying they were OK!! Obviously a few lacemakers have passed
though his area, and he has been well educated"!!!

Janice - I have done some Knotted lace in the plane, - with pre-cut thread
loosely plaited so I just pull out a length to use, - and leave all the ends
to cut off when I get back to "terra firma". I try to hide the needle under
a metal zipp somewhere, in case the scanners decide a needle is a dangerous
weapon, and confiscate it. I usually have another needle hidden away
somewhere else in my carry-on bag, just in case!!! I will have that
with me, as well as some tatting, as Melbourne to LA non-stop is a Very long
flight - though part of it is at night!. The sitting around at airport
waiting for flights is perhaps, the worst part! DH gets restless, so wants
to drag me off for walks - round and round the same bit of the airport...!!!

I am happy to say I received class confirmation for my first choice! I will be
learning about various needlelace techniques in the Needlelace practicium with

the car for the drive to Indy. But it will be nice to travel "light"!

[lace] IOLI Convention

2015-08-06 Thread Valhalla Bee Farm
Good morning, all.

The convention in Coralville was wonderful. I had a great time.

My morning class was Hinojosa with Sylvie Nguyen. Learned yet
another tape lace - seems those are my favorites.

My afternoon class was Russian Tape Lace again with Sylvie.
She helped me fix a problem on an old project and got me
started on a new project. Again, making tape lace makes me happy.

Thursday I spent the day with Karen Bovard doing Teneriffe/Sol Lace
with the afternoon session learning Paisley. It was quite fun and I hope
to get those projects done.

The food was great and the concessions for breakfast and lunch worked
perfectly. Also got to eat at some good restaurants - Old Chicago, Iowa
River
Power Restaurant and The Back Pocket. So much fun to travel and try
new places.

The teacher display room is one of my favorite events. I’m alway so in
awe with what I see. Some are my favorites and even though I don’t
care to make all the laces, I certainly appreciate the work.

It goes without saying that I spent some time and money in the vendor
room. So much to choose from. Fortunately there were three of us
who traveled together by car so we had room for all of our purchases.

I especially loved The Hat Lady. So interesting and so much fun!

Thanks to all who worked so hard to put this on. And thanks to all the
guilds who donated goodies.

Looking forward to next year’s convention in Indianapolis.

[lace] IOLI Convention dates

2015-07-02 Thread Jo Ann Eurell
Sue is correct. The dates for the IOLI convention are set in mid to late
July or early August depending on venue availability. Hotel contract
negotiations begin as soon as the host group is approved, but sometimes
other groups or events require that the dates be moved around. For
Indianapolis in 2016, we were competing with a major automobile race and
events related to the Indiana bicentennial. The hotel was only available
July 17-23, 2016 when we started negotiations. IOLI also tries to avoid
other lace events such as the OIDFA Congress. The good thing about July
dates is that some of our members are unable to attend in August because of
the start of school activities or teaching responsibilities so it allows
some people to come who might not make the more standard August dates. IOLI
does announce the dates when the venue is set. If you are planning a July
or August event, you can always contact the chair of the IOLI Convention
Administration Committee by going to the IOLI website and clicking on the
list of officers. The current Convention Admin Chair is Shirley Stone and
I'm sure she can share needed information about upcoming conventions if
available.

The I.O.L.I. convention will soon be here. It is not too late to sign up!
The convention dates are July 27-August 2, and it will be in Coralville,
Iowa, at exit 242 off Interstate 80.

There are still openings in some of the classes. Check the website for all
the convention information: www.internationalorganizationoflace.org

Be sure to make your hotel reservation at the Marriott Coralville Hotel and
Conference Center by July 6 in order to get the I.O.L.I. Lace Convention
room rate. The phone number is 1-319-688-4000.

The Arachne Lunch will be on Tuesday, July 28th from 11:30-1:00 in the
ballroom. You can buy your lunch from the food concession and bring it to
the tables, if you wish. We will have our usual Arachne raffle, and
donated prizes will be appreciated. This is a great chance to meet and
greet our friends from Arachne.

Iowa is beautiful now. Many preparations are being made for the
convention, and we hope that you will come!

Hey Janice! We will be spending a lot of time together at convention as I am
in the same classes!
Yes, we are excited to be able to provide an affordable option for the Arachne
lunch. (and similarily for OIDFA on Friday). You will be able to select your
concessions and take them to section of the ballroom. [Like at many hotels a
large ballroom can be subdivided into smaller sections and this is what we will
do to accomodate our large gathering vs smaller group.] You didn't hear it from
me, but I also see no reason why you couldn't bring in your own brown bag lunch.
I plan to contribute some prizes, assuming I can find my sewing machine!

[lace] IOLI Convention Registration

2015-01-27 Thread Janice Blair
I heard on the grapevine that some folks have not received their Bulletin copy
yet. Mine came over a week ago. The date to send in applications for classes
is February 1, so time is getting short if you want to make sure you get the
first choice. If you or your friends have not had the Bulletin yet, all the
information on classes, registration forms, etc. are on the website.
http://www.internationalorganizationoflace.org/2015Convention/index.html

Another thing to note is that this year, if you do not have a second choice
available, your registration will be returned and you will have to apply again
with the second date being the one used by the Registrar. This is because in
previous years people who hoped to get their first choice even if the class was
full had to be contacted by the Registrar which slowed things down.

Hope to see you all there.

[lace] IOLI convention 2015 lunches

2014-11-18 Thread hottleco
Thank you for posting the class info--I'm eagerly awaiting photos! Many thanks
also for reconsidering lunch options for lacemakers rushing to fro!! It's
been a few years since I've attended an EGA seminar but the grab go lunches
worked well. Sandwiches, wraps, salads etc. were
Packed in clear see-thru boxes (recyclable). They were available for
individual purchase or as pick 3--sandwich+chips+beverage or
salad+crackers+beverage. Additional sides desserts were separate. Fresh
baked cookies were always a hit! Some items ran out early they were
replenished. That meant leftovers in other categories, however, I'm not sure
how they managed the waste/expense. Trays, plates utensils were at the head
of the long tables (2) cash registers were at the end. The venues seemed
quite capable of serving several hundred with 4 lines, 2 per table--attendance
in those days was upward of 600! Hope this helps. Sincerely, Susan Hottle,

[lace] IOLI Convention 2015

2014-08-19 Thread Janice Blair
I know it is a little early to be thinking of next summer and another great
convention, but I did want to let you all know that next year there are 3
Arachne members on the co-host committee and they will be planning our
get-together.  We are hoping that there will be a concession stand where we
can pick up our lunch and meet in a private room, but we will have to see what
works out.

It was great to see everyone, including Janet Goodacre.  She and I
met over 10 years ago when I visited her on Vancouver Island and also met Bev
Walker and the rest of her guild.  I have met so many Arachne members over the
years.  We had a great contingency from overseas at our get-together this
time.  Lots of prizes in our free raffle.  I won a tea towel commemorating
Queen Elizabeths jubilee which was contributed by Janet Theaker.  It was so
nice to meet Janet and her husband and they were having a great vacation with
Sallie Owenby and her spouse.  Janet and I exchanged Christmas cards last year
on Arachne, and this time she won a little humbug sewing bag made in spider
fabric I had contributed to the raffle.  I know I mentioned this in a previous
email but that one was supposed to be a private email and I goofed so you all
got it.

My convention was really good.  I didn't seem as harried as last
year.  I am on the IOLI committee and arrange the teacher agreements and info
that appears in the Bulletin and online, and the Teacher Showcase.  Did
everyone like the fact that I included a more detailed class description,
photos and supply lists, where available, online last time?  If so, I will do
it again but I have not received much feedback on that.  A good deal of
convention time is spent in meetings for this year, including the Teacher
Meeting and those for 2015, 2016 conventions. I did miss the 2017 meeting, but
I didn't miss any class time. My time on that committee is up next year and we
are always looking for someone to shadow me for a year before taking over.
 Any volunteers?

I took Ipswich with Karen Thompson.  I thought that would
be easy as it just looks like Torchon but in black silk.  No, not simple, you
really need to study the excellent diagrams she provided to make sure you
didn't go wrong.  I did go wrong a few times and did retro lace quite a bit. I
was able to work a full repeat in one sample using 35 pair of bobbins, and
started my second sample which includes Kat stitch ground.  Something I had
not done before but once I had it established, it is a nice ground to work.

I
think the host group did an excellent job and everything went smoothly, apart
from my buying a book by Ulrike Voelcker that I already had on my bookcase at
home.  The only thing we could complain about was housekeeping as one day they
never did tidy our room.  We can live with an unmade bed but to have no coffee
for the morning was bad. Good job our friends in an adjoining room had spare.
I bought a couple of books, more thread than I can possibly use in a year,
only one bobbin, and a commemorative square bobbin with California orange
poppies on it, but I did a lot of eye candy shopping.  Wish I had unlimited
funds, but then it just means more for my family to get rid of when I pop my
clogs.

Tomorrow I am going to the San Bernardino History Museum to meet up
with the Cross Twisters.  They demonstrate there every week and I guess we get
to gossip about lace and stuff when no one is visiting.

Sunday will be a
picnic at Mission Bay in San Diego with the three lace guilds from the area.
A chance for DH to meet some lacemakers and their families.  Life is good in
sunny southern California.

HI, Janice,

Okay, I didn't get to go to convention and don't expect to get there in the
next decade or so, but here's feedback. YES!! I always got frustrated with
lack of info, especially a picture of the lace, in general if that's all they
have, but of the project(s) is even better. If I don't know the lace, my
decision will be based on whether it looks interesting or pretty. If I know it
just a little and some of the stuff is definitely not my cup of tea, my
decision will be based on whether the project is ugly (to me) or not. Even if
I'm very familiar with the lace but the project looks exciting, I'll take the
class for the fun. I've decided against a lot of classes because there wasn't
a picture, and was sorry when I finally saw it on a student's pillow or at the
teacher's showcase.

Then there's the supply list--as soon as I find out what classes I got I want
to start gathering supplies. But I can't till the list comes out, sometimes
not till June! I think the supply list would also help me decide on a class,
especially if I have to fit a pillow in my luggage when they say minimum 24 or
some such. And do I really want to bring a thousand bobbins wound with frog
hair for a class project?

I think you've been doing a marvelous job (not that I'd expect less than that
from you) as teacher coordinator. I'm sorry to hear you're not planning on
another term. Whoever follows you will have big shoes to fill.

take care,

Good afternoon all -

This was my third year attending convention. Once you go you will always want

I live in Lincoln, NE USA and I traveled to Sacramento, CA on Amtrak. It was a
long

my iPad so I could listen while I rode - tatted some, cross-stitched some,
stared out
the window lots just enjoying the scenery.

My morning class was Bruges with Elizabeth Peterson. I learned an amazing
amount
of new things. Was able to finish a flower motif by Wednesday afternoon only
because
Elizabeth was kind enough to open her room that afternoon for anyone who needed
help.
I really wanted to get it done so I could start a new piece. And that I did on
Thursday
morning - the trefoil - used a pale green DMC sz 80 tatting thread. There were
12 in the
class and everyone was doing different patterns. Elizabeth was wonderful about
getting
around to everyone. In fact, the whole group was great! I hope I can finish
the trefoil
and start another flower before I forget what I learned. Did lots of videoing
on my iPad
which should help a lot.

In the afternoon, I took the tatting class with Randy and Gary Houtz. What
fun! I met them
quite a few years ago but hadn’t taken a class from them. There were 14 in
that class.
We learned a different technique every day. Finished each motif on my return
home trip
on the train. Once again, they make sure they get to everyone so you can learn
lots.

I’m always in awe at the Teacher’s Display night. That would be my dream - to
be able
to make most of those laces and do them well. (There are some techniques that
I am
not as fond of as others, but, boy, do I appreciate the work!)

The War Lace presentation given by Karen Thompson was so very interesting.
The lace collection belonging to Lia Baumister was awesome.
How could you not get enthused after seeing such wonderful things for a week!?!

And the vendor room - as always - had so many tempting things - and I did bring
home a good number - books, bobbins, a new commemorative cover cloth.

Now I am home - running the shop - selling needlework supplies - having guild
meetings. Not as much time to do what I want to do. But every minute I can
make lace, I’m happy.

Hope to see some of you next year in Coralville. I know I have already made
plans to attend.

[lace] IOLI Convention

2014-08-11 Thread hottleco
Hello All! Whew--what a week in Sacramento! IOLI rocks!! My wire lace class
with Lauran Sundin was beyond my wildest dreams as to content, creativity
challenge. So many techniques, tips, tricks hints--many of which could be
applied to other textile endeavors. Did we make something in class?
Well--sort of. Our first sample consumed all of Monday provided many ah
ha! moments regarding structure, scale 3D manipulation. Collectively, the
rest of the week's samples could be made into a shawl pin if desired or not.
It seemed like most students prefered to rework their samples construct the
pin later. We also analyzed our lace by photocopying at 100%, 200% 400%. Oh
my, the tiniest lace wart really pops at 400%! Her class was definitely
outside the box a must attend if the opportunity presents itself. My only
caveat is: this class could easily have used another 1/2 to full day to allow
for more lacemaking in class. Otherwise--who knew that a drill, j!
ingle bells, a spark plug gapper paper cut outs could be integral to
lacemaking?!? On Wed., my button class with Nancy Nehring was also excellent.
We made Singleton, Dorset, Shirtwaist, soutache Victorian star buttons with
plenty of materials left over to make more at home. Other activities were over
the top as were raffle items, exhibit room the vendor area. I was totally
impressed by the event--every bit as nice as EGA (Embroiderers' Guild of
America) with our membership at 1100+ compared to many thousands for EGA. I
really enjoyed meeting Arachne members others with whom I have corresponded
over the years. It was nice to put a face with a name find that we were
already lacemaking friends--we just hadn't met in person until Sacramento!
When I get a free moment, I will post photos of some new-to-me bobbins. One is
a green lace@arachne.com 1st anniversary with a green/white spider spangle.
Another is the Lace Hall Nottingham--yellow with a cat. Would!
love to know more about them from the experts! The exhibit room was
overwhelming! The display of stars, challenge pieces a huge collection of
vintage lace (Nancy Evans??) was breathtaking. Also Lia Baumeister (sp?)
shared many pieces from her collection as they were modeled at the closing
banquet. Many thanks to all who made it a very enjoyable week of lace.
Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA USA

Hi Nicole:

I took Ulrike's class this year, but it wasn't Barjac, it was the drawing
class. I'm coming home with two Chantilly prickings that I designed and drew
myself. Ulrike intends to teach Barjac at next year's IOLI convention in
Coralville, Iowa (near Cedar Rapids). Her book on Barjac is out this fall.

[lace] IOLI Convention

2014-08-07 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Agnes,
Janet and I had a long chinwag this evening after the annual
meeting.  I spotted her in the lobby with her hubby.  They are having a good
vacation touring around with Sallie and her husband.  I met her at the Arachne
meeting on Monday evening.  I won the QEII jubilee tea towel she had brought
and she won a humbug bag I had made with spider fabric.

The set meals so far
have been great but the service in the restaurant is very, very slow.
Hopefully our banquet tomorrow will be as good as the previous meals.
yesterday my friends and I took the tour of Old Sac, which is the original
downtown area of Sacramento and the buildings are like they were in the 1860's
after the great flood.  We had three walking tours, the history museum, the
underground and the street level walking tour.  It was very hot but our guide
always stopped in the shade of the sycamore trees.  The weather had been
unseasonably cool until Wednesday but the sun came out and I was glad I took
along my sun hat.  Our bus to the tour was a party bus with colored lights
around the ceiling and sofa type seats along each side.

I bought a set of
Piper silk colors today along with some organzine for a future project.  The
competition pieces are good this year but I can't post pictures of them even
though the voting has probably finished by now.  Janet has a lace clock in the
display room and I have three pieces of Thomas Lester Beds in there including
the giraffe which had not been worked before.  An adaptation by Holly Van
Sciver or a Lester lappet.  I bought a book on Lester Lace, almost bought
another by Ulrike Voelker but found I already had it when I checked my library
app.  Phew, saved myself a $60 mistake there.

I am off to bed now after I
clean the wine off my teeth.

Well, here I am at Convention. The Arachne get-together just finished, and
it was fun to put a face to the names on the list. Sunday evening was the
get-together dinner - fantastic food!, and last night we had the teacher
showcase. Today we had a lunch with a talk and visual presentation on the
War Laces at the Smithsonian. This evening's entertainment is the Tat-Off,
which is just getting started. I haven't heard a lot about the classrooms
and classes, but if everybody's class is like mine we're so busy learning
and working the time flies by. The classroom is big and has lots of light
and the staff seem to be able to conjure tables out of thin air. Tomorrow is
our day off, and lots of the attendees are taking the tour to the Lace
Museum in Sunnyvale and to Lacis. What more can I say?

[lace] IOLI Convention Arachne Get Together.

2014-06-23 Thread Janice Blair
Is Lace really quiet these days?  I haven't had a digest for over a week.

I
thought I would mention that I haven't given up on a get together for our
Arachne group at the convention in Sacramento in August.  I have been trying
to arrange a meeting area for our group with the co-hosts.

I suggest that we
meet on Tuesday evening, say 6:30 pm.  I don't think there are any events
scheduled on Tuesday evening.  Teachers Showcase will be Monday and the
Tat-off is Wednesday.  I can hopefully let you all know where we will meet
before convention, but if not, listen for an announcement on Sunday or look
for a message on the information board.

We can have our usual impromptu free
raffle.  I have some prizes given to me already.  I had about ten people email
me about the cost of a meal in California and they all suggested meeting
somewhere else.  We could bring our own drink to the get together and maybe
some snacks to pass around.  Does that sound okay with everyone?

Lace
content - What classes are you all signed up for.  I am having a break from
Beds and doing Ipswich. I will be bringing my last three Thomas Lester pieces
to the Display Room, which includes the Giraffe that had not been worked
before.  Hoping to learn some new techniques in Ipswich.  Please reply to the
list this time to get a digest generated.

 Hi Janice,
I will be there at Sacramento, and Yes, I will also come to the Arachne
Get-together! (Wouldn't miss if for quids!!)
My DH will be with me, too, I expect, - so 2 seats, please if you are
counting chairs!!!

I am going to do the gold silver Early laces with Gil Dye, and am looking
forward to it. I love the early laces, and have done a couple of Gil's
patterns. In fact I am putting a hankie edge I made from a pattern she put
in UK Lace a few years ago into the exhibition. I worked it in cotton, of
course (I usually work in cotton these days!)

I look forward to seeing your giraffe.

I must take this opportunity to tell you all that I needed some gold
silver metallic threads for this class , and found one of the threads
mentioned in the class requirements at The Tatting Corner - somewhere in
USA. Luckily the lady takes Aussie cards and Paypal, and I was able to order
from her, and have the threads sent to my daughter Helen, in Seattle. (Saved
a heap on postage!) The lady was SO helpful, and the parcel arrived at
Helen's home within 3 days. I can recommend shopping there - for threads,
anyway- and you get excellent service with this online shopping.
(Hooray! I find so many stores will not accept credit cards or Paypal from
overseas addresses. It is so frustrating, and annoying, so it is very
special when you find a nice place that is happy to deal with someone
outside of America.)

Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz.

brings up the class listings.  Click on the one you want and you get the

class number.  The second is the class name.  Click on this name and you get
the picture of the item to be made.  Click on the teacher's name and you get
info about him/her and maybe a picture.

Just keep clicking and things and see
what comes up.

Thank you, Robin.

A suggestion for next and following years at IOLI luncheons: A sign-in
sheet, so we can know who was present - by first name and last initial.
Then, some of us can match names to the faces. For example, Devon T. can be
seen in front row far right. I think I identified Liz L. of Australia in
the second row (and her husband in back row).

Hope everyone is thrilled with all they learned and all they purchased at

[lace] IOLI Convention

2013-08-08 Thread Janice Blair
Hi,
I am not in class this afternoon and was making lace in my bedroom when a
huge moving van parked in front of my ground floor window and blocked out all
the light, so I am taking the opportunity of reading all my emails in the
hotel lobby in Salt Lake City while it is fairly quiet.  Classes are still on
for a couple more hours.

I am doing a Beds Thomas Lester class with Holly Van
Sciver and working on a giraffe that is taken from a lappet.  It will be about
14 inches tall as I enlarged it for my 80/2 Egyptian cotton.  It is quiet a
challenging piece of work and I need all the light I can get.  Hope they move
the van soon, but I think it might be here for as long as I am.  There is a
cycle race going on (Tour of Utah), and the support vans have taken over the
back parking lot.  I managed to stop them towing my friends car away when I
saw the tow truck moving all the cars that were parked there. The cyclists
come into town today but I don't know if there are any famous ones in the
race.

Back to lace - yesterday I took a class in Romanian Point lace with
Sylvia Marariu and had a very enjoyable time.  She is a delight as a teacher
and very knowledgeable having learnt the lace as a child in Romania.  My
bookmark is taking shape but I put it aside now to work on my Beds.  Holly has
redrawn the giraffe which is surrounded by large leaf shapes and trails.  The
original piece has the giraffe with a birth sack between its four feet.
Thankfully she changed it into leaf tallies and more trails.  Not sure I
would have wanted that on my head!

The Arachne lunch on Monday was a success.
There were 24 of us, plus one husband and one interloper who got the wrong
meal ticket in her registration package.  Maybe she will join us after finding
out what a fun group we are.  We had 10 raffle prizes and I got the first one
(people called it a fix) but it was purely accidental.  Liz Ligetti's husband,
Alex, won the last prize which was a very large sparkly spider brooch.  We had
a group photo taken which will be put on our site, unless it is there already.
Devon took it. This is the first time I have had an Internet connection.
Money is running low after many visits to the vendor room.  Have to save some
as we are driving home and it is a 3 day trip.   I hope someone else posts
with more news.  This evening we are going to a rehearsal for the Mormon
Tabernacle choir.

Many SciFi/Fantasy Conventions are much less than $150, and have the

Now, there are a few differences though:-

Another difference, I believe, is in the size of registration. Those
comic and scifi cons have huge numbers of fans sharing the costs of
the convention. This lowers the cost per person on the overall expenses.

I think, also, that the vendors pay more, and there are more sponsors,
and so forth to help with the expenses.

So then I wrote to the boys' boarding schools, and found one very nice
school who were in the process of building a beautiful new boarding house,
and who were so excited about it, that they agreed to accommodate us for a
reasonable sum of moneybeing able to rent out their facilities during
school holidays was the icing on the cake for them.

Good morning all

Geraldine Stott and myself both taught on a Caribbean cruise back in 90's
organised by Gretchen Algier. We stayed in a hotel at Puerto Rico where we
taught for two days before boarding the ship, and taught only on the days we
were at sea. The ship docked at Barbados, St Thomas etc where we all were
able to spend time, but it was so hot that we were happy to get back on
board and enjoy the comfort of air conditioning. As for food, well I have
never seen so much food in my life - one could eat 24hrs a day and it was
out of this world! Mind you, the world economy was far healthier than it is
now!

I have also taught at Exeter University for Susan Cox of The English Lace
School and at Norwich University for the OIDFA conference (2002 I think) and
both were similar to Ruth's description of the boys boarding school. Our
Universities here in the UK are generally very old buildings and sometimes
the accommodation leaves a lot to be desired but some have improved over
recent years and I think you will find that they are all delighted to be
able to let out their facilities during the holidays.

I think perhaps this is certainly worth persuing.

[lace] Lace: IOLI Convention

2013-04-22 Thread Jane Partridge
So much so, Catherine, that they make big business and charge the earth
for it! In researching possible venues for The Lace Guild's AGM and
Convention, I went to the Academic Venues Show in London last year,
where many of the UK universities had displays to show off their
facilities - all far too expensive for the Guild's needs.

Our vice-chairman teaches an after school lace club at the school we
used this year, which was able to suit our needs, and allowed us to
charge less than in previous years, it was just a pity the main hall
where the AGM was held didn't have easy access for those who couldn't
use the stairs. If we could find a school with good public transport
access, good accommodation nearby, with two large halls and classrooms
on one level, good food and good pricing that would be perfection!

[lace] Lace: IOLI Convention

2013-04-22 Thread lacelady
I enjoy attending a week long lace conference. It gives time for classes and
other activities. The shopping opportunity is great. The type of facility
will make a difference in cost for rooms and classes. Also for food. Some
years my budget just can not support a hotel conference.

Lacemaking is not a speedy skill. It's even slower when learning a new style
or technique. A one day class/workshop barely gets the basics explained. Our
local group likes to schedule workshops for 2.5 days (15 hours of instruction).
A basic class at IOLI is 12 hours for a half day class or 24 hours for an all
day class. A person who is new or works slowly may choose to take just one 12
hour class and have the other half day to work independently on the project.
Some of the more complicated laces allow for all day under the eye of the
instructor.

The week also gives a chance to see some of the local sites, exhibits, and
shopping plus just meeting and getting acquainted with other lacemakers.
In some cases, just getting away from home/family/job/etc is a great morale
booster.

The drawback is the cost. Travel (plane) costs are beyond our control. Some
years it's higher than other years. Attendance does seem to be down some in
the years that travel costs climb or there's been a security scare. Some
people attend only the conferences that are near where they live. The IOLI
Conference changes each year to a different area of the country so is not
always near the same people. It's nice when it's close enough to drive to,
because a person has a chance to take more things. In recent years, if my
memory is correct, the conferences have varied from 125 to 300 people. It's
hard to predict so tentative plans have to prepare for 300 but be organized to
break even on expenses with 125. This affects the teachers in the extreme.
Enough have to be committed to serve the 300, but many have to be cancelled if
only 125 registrations come in.

People who live near can bring an ice chest or cooler with food, so the expense
of restaurant meals is reduced. These days, many hotels furnish a small
refrigerator and a microwave in each room. A quick shopping trip can stock up
the basic foods. The hotel room cost can be shared with a friend or two. This
can cut the hotel bill in half or thirds, or even fourths if you have 3
compatible friends.

There's no way around the basic registration fee and hourly class charges. You
can control whether you take 12 or 24 hours of class. Even with the economies
I've mentioned, a week conference adds up to a large expense amount. I made a
rough calculation that it would cost me $1500-2000 if I attended this year's
IOLI. (A scheduling conflict made it not practical this year but I can always
dream, and start saving money for next year.)

Booking a school/college can be more cost effective but the housing facilities
are not as elegant, and no room service. I've known a few lacemakers who were
fussy about this, but I spend so little time in my room that 'fancy' is not
important. Our local regional conferences are held at colleges during summer
break. They are 3 days with room, food, and classes in close proximity. These
usually have fewer than 100 people. A larger IOLI conference might not fit as
well. It would be an idea to explore, though.

While a cruise conference sounds neat, I have doubts it would be any less
expensive than a hotel conference. Are there any cruise ships tied up to a dock
somewhere that could be used like a large hotel? If it's not moving, there
shouldn't be any fuel costs.

Location is a key to any conference. Lace conferences take so many classrooms
that's it's a real challenge to find a place. When we hosted IOLI, we explored
all kinds of ideas, and the only place we came up with was a hotel... and only
one hotel in all of Portland had enough room for us. Many hotels are built to
hold lots of people, meeting together in large rooms, not divided up in a
multitude of classes.

Ideas are welcome. Keep them coming.

Alice in Oregon tired of winding bobbins. Glad I've reached the end of
this batch.

I am curious what other lace makers think about the IOLI Convention format
since the enrollment seems to be down this year. What could the reason
be? Is it too long to have a full week? and therefore too expensive both in
terms of days off and hotel and meal expenses? Or why do you think?

I do appreciate how difficult it is to find an affordable venue,
particularly when one has no idea how many lacemakers to cater for.
Finances are tight for everyone at the moment and we lacemakers are an
ageing community, in that the majority of us are now pensioners with no wage
coming in and very little by way of interest on our savings! However, each
individual has to take this into account and decide whether it is the
tuition/class that is their priority or the food and accommodation at an
affordable price - we can't have it all! Unless one has been involved in
the organisation of such an event, the average lacemaker has no idea how
difficult it is to find an affordable venue, easily accessible with all the
requirements needed for disabled access, suppliers space, classrooms etc.
and some are very quick to find fault, but let them try and do better.

[lace] IOLI convention

2013-04-22 Thread Lyn Bailey
Once you get beyond one styrofoam pillow, beginner bobbins and a manual,
lace can get pretty expensive. I cannot speak to needlelace, as I don’t do
it. There are other pillows, decorated bobbins, the gorgeous Midlands
bobbins, and, above all, books. And taking classes, especially in the US,
where it’s always for a weekend, or a week, can get expensive because of
food and lodging expenses. Those who can commute to weekly classes don’t
appreciate their advantages, in my opinion. The ideal way to learn lace.

Some of us have been blessed with generous lacemaking budgets, and some of
us have not. Personally, while I am presently quite comfortable
financially, it was not always so. Raising 3 children while married to a
United Methodist minister does not guarantee the elegancies of life. That
tradition just continues, which means when I go to the yearly Ithaca, New
York, Lace Days, I camp. More money for books, even though it is frequently
below freezing in the morning. I have only been to two IOLI conventions,
and they were within driving distance. When I went to IOLI in Bethesda,
Maryland, I camped. I commuted to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 2004. On
the other hand, I went to the OIDFA meeting in Caen, France, because I speak
French, and I was able to lure DH, who doesn’t appreciate all the beauties
of France, to Normandy afterwards. Camping.

Each one of us is different in her/his preferences. I think a cruise is
actually not a bad option, as room and board can be downright inexpensive.
I took a Royal Carribean cruise in January that cost $75 a night per person,
double occupancy, with a window, for a week long cruise. Very nice. They
certainly have enough meeting rooms, if you bring or they supply lamps. I
also think a school in the summer might be a good option, as again we wouldn’t
have to worry about classes in bedrooms. Food might not be world class,
though. And schools are planned with youngsters without walkers or canes
and with roller blades and bikes in mind. Such a place would also,
unfortunately, need to be near an airport, as train service in the US is
pitiful. And there may be lots of logistical problems with obtaining a
block of cabins on a cruise before the money and participation is definite.
No one is going to come up with the perfect solution, as there is none, but
I do think consideration should be made to keep costs for accommodation as
low as possible to permit more people to think it is within their budget.
IOLI chapters have an understandable preference for their own jurisdiction.
It would be interesting to know what percentage of attendees were commuters
in the various areas. Does that percentage remain constant, or does it rise
for conventions closer to the coast, where population density is greater?
Does the overall attendance rise as one gets closer to the coast? Which
convention had the largest per centage of attendees under the age of 50? I
must admit I am more drawn to lace events that are within driving distance.
If we’re at a school, and it’s cheap, will the cost advantage work to lure
enough ‘youngsters’ to offset those with walking problems who don’t come?

continue. Frost for the last two mornings.

[lace] IOLI Convention

2013-04-22 Thread Karen Thompson
Should the tour day be kept in the middle of the week where it requires
extra nights and meals whether you want to participate in a tour or not?
Should the IOLI think about having the Convention every other year? If so,
alternating years to OIDFA? I feel bad for all the organizers, who put in
an incredible amount work. If many of the classes have to be cancelled it
is also bad for the vendors.
