RE: [LegacyUG] Individual Report - Spacing of Event/Fact Notes

2011-11-10 Thread Malcolm Green
There was a problem reported in June regarding formatting problems with
multi-line text fields converted back to Legacy after being edited in Families.
This was caused because iOS separates lines with newline characters, whereas
Windows requires both newline AND carriage return. This problem was fixed in
Families Sync 1.2.0 released on June 21. We've received no further reports of
problems since then, and I've just tried editing a notes field in Families then
transferring the file back to Legacy and it worked fine. However, if anyone
still has any formatting problems in files transferred from Families to Legacy
using Families Sync 1.2.0 or later, then please report the details to
supp...@telgen.co.uk or via the forum at www.telgen.co.uk/families/forum.

Hmmm... Thanks Dennis.

I'd be interested to find out if anyone who is synching between Legacy and
Families 1.0 are experiencing inserted LF and CR characters!

I'm sure if it's a problem that Malcolm will fix it quickly.

This is interesting. I helped one other user fix her file about a week
ago (see Spacing Issues / Word Wrap thread). Many of her memo
(Access data type) fields had extra LF and CR characters. There were
way too many problems for it to be attributed to pilot error. She
thought that it might have been caused by moving her file back and
forth to the Families program on her ipad. I asked her to conduct a
small test to look for the introduction of these extra characters. I
haven't heard back from her so I don't think she has done so.

IIRC, she said the problem started in August.

*I think it is. I have some sources in my file where I indicate, From the
conversation of Aunt Melissa's son, 1992. As long as they are his or her
*personal* knowledge or personal memories conveyed directly to you, I would
say it is fine. Personal knowledge and/or personal memories are master
sources to me.

On the other hand, when a person says to me, Well, Joe said his brother's
son's wife's sister's daughter found out one of our ancestors used to live
in Miami, I don't accept that as a solid source. No way to track that
back and confirm it. To me, that would be more of a secondary source, and
worth a note. To me, unconfirmable sources are not primary sources. They
can either secondary sources or just notes.

I have even sat down with a relative with a list of questions, two gallons
of tea, a tape recorder, and just ask questions and let him/her talk,
answer my questions, and usually I get a few stories in the process!
Later, I get someone to transcribe the tape for me so I can a paper copy
and a audio copy. It helps- if I later talk to someone else, and they
wonder where I got that, I can show the transcript. I am VERY careful that
I don't share anything accusatory or inflammatory with another family
member. That is a good bridge burner.

RE: [LegacyUG] Individual Report - Spacing of Event/Fact Notes

2011-11-10 Thread brenzelmf
I have been keeping up with the updates to Families and I currently have 1.3.1
installed on my iPad. I synced back to my laptop on October 10th and recently
found the bad spacing in Legacy Individual Reports. The last good report
showing correct spacing was created on September 18th, prior to the sync from
Families.

I found last night that if I go into each instance of the bad spacing in Legacy
and just do a 'Save', the issue is fixed. There is nothing visibly wrong with
the notes in Legacy. I didn't make any changes, just saved it.

Lesson learned. If I make updates in Families, I will make note of what I
changed before syncing back to my laptop. Then when I sync, I will
double-check them in Legacy and make sure that I create and review my webpages
and the reports that I commonly create and use in research before overwriting
my master Legacy copy of the database.

I will report this to Families Support later today.

[LegacyUG] Four-color filing system --question

In an earlier thread, Laura asked:

IF you are using this system, HOW do you handle a person who is in more
than one line such as person who is blood related on both the paternal
grandfather (blue) and the maternal grandmother sides (yellow)? This
happens a lot in my trees because of the intermarriages between families

Then I wrote:
If the person is female, she is with her parents (whatever color that family
unit is) before her marriage, and with her husband (whatever color his family
unit is) after she's married. Or did I completely misunderstand that part?

Question for those of you using Mary Hill's system: Was I correct?

Thanks!

I don’t use the source or the phrase “personal knowledge” unless the person
actually witnessed the event. If great Aunt Marge tell me the dates of birth
of her children, that would be personal knowledge. If Great Aunt Marge tells
me her father’s date of birth I would simply source that as an interview. I
may be splitting hairs but I think personal knowledge requires an eyewitness
account.

Yes! You CAN do it globally! Go to the MASTER LOCATION List screen. At the
top right click OPTIONS. Then click EXPAND/CONTRACT LOCATION PARTS. Then on
the right side check the box that says ADD USA (or add United States, whichever
your prefer) and you are done

I did a bad job on my locations early on. I have almost no genealogy data out
of the country, so I ignored the USA part of the location and put the State
there. Now, I see that it was a mistake and would like to change to the format
as outlined on the training video.

My question is: Is there a way to do this at all globally, or must I attack
each entry in my whole location master list one at a time? That will take many
days (even weeks) to accomplish, I'm afraid. Suggestions appreciated.

[LegacyUG] Timeline Error

2011-11-10 Thread Georgia
Helpful Legacy Users:

I have been reviewing all my Legacy Training videos prior to lending
them to a friend. In the process, I was reminded of the timelines that
can be added to an individual's chronology. I have used these in the
past and, in fact, created my own timeline about Chinese immigration to
Hawaii. Imagine my surprise when I tried to add a chronology - or find
the one I created - and discovered there are no timelines. When I try
to see the list I get Error Displaying Timeline List; Error 9:
Subscript out of range.

I did go to the archives to see what they said about Error #9. I must
say the cure sounds worse than the problem. Deleting all files with
the ending usr seems extreme. What will happen if I do this? How
will it bring back the timelines? Where could they have gone?

I must say it has probably been a couple of years since I looked at
timelines. I am using the latest build.

Many thanks in advance,

Georgia

Re: [LegacyUG] Timeline Error

2011-11-10 Thread Sherry/Support
The .usr files just hold your preferences and settings. When you
delete them, they will be restored as you use the various features in
Legacy - you'll just have to reselect your choices.

Also, make sure you have the latest build 7.5.0.112 and run the check/repair

The Legacy website www.LegacyFamilyTree.com Help Center Technical

I could repeat that here, but there are links on the page for updating Legacy.

You can always test a backup by restoring it with a different name

convert it to Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana, USA
I will lose the address, right?

If you have a cemetery name in a location field then this will
 happen...

 Grantham Family Cemetery, Lamar, Mississippi

Grantham Family Cemetery, Lamar, Mississippi, USA

(cemetery names really don’t go in a location field but many people do
 it).

  I

almost no genealogy data out of

mistake and would like to change to the format

My question is: Is there a way to do

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Individual Events vs Marriage Events

When I do a census, first of all I add a fact -
-- Census, Federal 1900 (or whatever census is being done)
And I add the details -
Elyria, Lorain, Ohio, USA  and the full date that the census was done. NOT
ENUMERATION DAY...

Then in my notes I transcribe what I see in the census listing. I give the head
of household a full listing of EVERYONE in the household that is listed on that
census entry.  If there is someone not related I include in my notes that
persons status. If unrelated and I know that for a fact I state that.
After doing that, I use the repeat button, I go to each person that was listed
in that household and I give them the listing that pertains to them.  It is
sourced exactly like I do with the head of household.  The image is given to the
head of household for that census.  Once a person marries and becomes head of
household then they begin having the main note and images linked to them.

The only things linked to the marriage would be a copy of the marriage
record/Certificate, copy of a newspaper write up on the marriage or a scanned
image of the wedding invitation.  If a divorce occurred and I somehow had
documentation of that it would be linked to the marriage to support the divorce
date if known.  I do the same with birth facts birth Certificates,  death fact
death certificates, Obituaries (I type all in), and burial usually has the
headstone photo linked.

Hope this is clearer than mud and it helps.

It restores the originals - resetting them to default. I don't know
why things like that work - I'm not a programmer. I just know that's
the recommended solution to that error, along with the other steps.

The Legacy.usr file is the one with the biggest amount of items to
reselect - it holds the settings and preferences in Options
Customize as well as some other scattered settings. The other ones are
mainly related to reports and views.

Re: [LegacyUG] Timeline Error

2011-11-10 Thread Ron Ferguson
Georgia,

Your Timeline is not working, it may not be working because Legacy has mixed
up your instructions as to the detailed format which you require, this
information is contained in the .USR files. So, deleting the appropriate USR
file as suggested by Sherry will cause Legacy to create a new USR file using
the defaults the next time you decide to create a timeline. You will then
need to redo your settings.

This is only an approximation as to how it works, but hopefully you will see
the principle.

Okay, this helps me understand why it might have lost my timeline but
why did the others go away (the standard ones that Legacy supplies)?

And to the specific instructions:

When I go to My Computer and then to my C drive and then to Legacy, I
find a long list and perhaps dozens of files with the.usr extension. Do
I manually delete each of these? Some show up in black and some are
blue. Why the difference?

Re: [LegacyUG] Timeline Error

2011-11-10 Thread Ron Ferguson
Georgia,

In the Legacy folder you should see two usr files relating to timelines
Timeline.usr and TimelineFiles.usr the first for charts and the second for
reports, I would just delete these, at least for starters.

You also that there are no Timelines, where have you looked? The timelines
are stored in the C:\Legacy\Timeline folder (by default). They can be opened
in Notepad (or any text reader) by right clicking and selecting your text
reader by using 'Open With'. Now if there are none in this folder, or the
folder is not in the Legacy folder, then that may be your real problem!

 Georgia,

Your Timeline is not working, it may not be working because Legacy has
 mixed
up your instructions as to the detailed format which you require, this
information is contained in the .USR files. So, deleting the appropriate
 USR
file as suggested by Sherry will cause Legacy to create a new USR file
 using
the defaults the next time you decide to create a timeline. You will then
 need to redo your settings.

This is only an approximation as to how it works, but hopefully you will

 the principle.

Re: [LegacyUG] Timeline Error

Georgia,

Pity, but worth a try! I'm afraid that you have little option but do as
recommended in the Legacy Troubleshooting Page and delete the lot (.usr
files), yes, all of them!

I would do some things first though. The colours of Legacy are a pain to
restore, so if you haven't already done It, I would first go to
OptionsCustomiseColours and use the 'Save' button to save them with a name
of your choice. Similarly if you have web pages and haven't saved those
settings then I suggest that you do, also if you have any special report
settings I would save the Report Options - and there may well be others you
can think of. The point being that every setting which you have carefully
chosen will be restored to the Legacy defaults.

Glad to hear that your timelines are not lost!

Good Luck!

Good explanation, Paula. Since I'm transferring information to our
website, though, I will want to list who or what the repository is, so I
guess using your explanation below, I might have:

Personal knowledge of Jane Doe, email sent to Paula on 11/10/2011

That would be just to let the user know who has possession or a record
of the email. I'm still trying to figure the best ways to do things,

I enter the email 11/10/2011 in the detail comment and click to

I would enter the transcription in the Text field (or add the image if

And I guess the repository is me... I either have the email on my

RE: [LegacyUG] Master Location list revision

2011-11-10 Thread Robert Austen
Hi Jane,

This is a procedure that I use to add ‘USA’ to the end of locations…

BACKUP your file first. Read the CAUTION note below…

Go to Search/Search and Replace (Ctrl H)
Select Lists-Location
Check ‘Ends With’ (Important)
Check ‘Replace only found text with replacement text’ (Important)
Find What? ‘, Indiana’ (note: I’ve used comma/space/Indiana)
Replacement text ‘, Indiana, USA’ (again comma/space/Indiana, USA)

This will replace all locations ending in ‘, Indiana’ with ‘, Indiana, USA’

16 College Avenue, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana
will become
16 College Avenue, Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana, USA

It will not change 16 College Avenue, Bloomington, Monroe County,Indiana
(no space between the comma and Indiana) If you are less cautious you can skip
the comma/space.

* * CAUTION… * *
Be sure to have a backup of your file. Check your file after to be sure you
haven’t made major unplanned changes.
When you click on ‘Start’ it will take you to the first instance it finds and
you have the choice to ‘Replace’ or ‘Replace All’. ‘Replace’ will step you
through one change at a time. ‘Replace All’ does just that. There is no ‘Undo’
This will change any location ending in ‘, Indiana’ to ‘, Indiana, USA’
It is possible that another location ends in ‘Indiana’ that is not in the USA –
this will be changed as well.
I use the comma and space to further limit what it finds. Be sure to include
the comma and space before the place name in both the ‘Find What’ and
‘Replacement Text’
You may wish to repeat this (or similar) procedure for ‘List-Location-Short’
You will have to repeat this procedure for every state in the USA.
The reason for selecting ‘Ends With’ is to prevent replacing the word ‘Indiana’
elsewhere in the field and to skip those that already end in ‘USA’ (or
something else) You don’t want Indiana, USA, USA.

* * If you are faint of heart - use the same procedure as above but use ',
Indiana' as the text for 'Find What' AND 'Replacement Text'. Then manually
edit the text in the 'Replacement' box and do each one individually. By using
the same wording for both steps it will simply replace the found text with the
exact same text if it is not one you wish to change, or if you accidentally hit
the wrong button. Copy and paste ', USA' will work here.

I think this is what you were trying to achieve.

Bob

Hi Jane. I'm not sure, off the top of my head, why those boxes are
greyed out for you. However, I think you might have great success with
the SEARCH and REPLACE module in Legacy. You can go there and select:

FIND WHERE: Lists - Location
REPLACEMENT TEXT:

For example, let's say that you had records where you used:

Michigan, United States

but you wished to use

MI, USA

If you put Michigan, United States in your search term
and
MI, USA in your replacement text term, the system would be able to
change both things at once.

However, this also means that you would have to make several passes
through your database because you would need to look for

MI, USA
Michigan, USAetc.

But once you get the hang of it, you will be able to make lots of global
changes in this manner. BUT LIKE EVERYONE SAID, BE SURE YOU ARE WORKING
WITH A BACKUP COPY ONLY AND TAKE IT ONE STEP AT A TIME.

Anyway, if you provide about 5 to 10 ACTUAL examples of WHAT you want to
change to WHAT, perhaps it would become clearer for the users on this
list to help you.

Once there is a marriage, you always put people in the line of the father. The
family name and lineage are passed down from the father. I also have an event
of Intermarriage so I can document how they are related and any other info.

God bless,
Ellen

Re: Re: [LegacyUG] Master Location list revision

2011-11-10 Thread Mary Moyer
Jane

[snip from Jane]
Examples of what I have now:

, Abdingdon Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia
, , Pickens County, South Carolina
Borden, Wood Township, Clark County, Indiana
Cane Creek Cemetery, Snow Camp, Alamance County, North Carolina
637 N. Pine St., Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana
[end snip]

I use the following conventions for my files if I know the name of the town and
county:
town, county, state, country
Manchester, Boone County, Illinois, USA

If the area is rural, and there's no town, I use:
township, county, state, country
Abingdon Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia, USA

If I know the county but not the town, I use:
, county, state, country
, Boone County, Illinois, USA

If I know the name of the cemetery, I use:
cemetery, city, county, state, country
Alto Pass Cemetery, Alto Pass, Union County, Illinois, USA

At this time I don't add street addresses, but your example looks OK to me. If
you sort your locations from right to left you won't have any problems.
