RE: [LegacyUG] WorldVitalRecords.com
Typically I don’t use other people’s trees at all except for maybe a lead. I never merge trees with my information either. I know about the LDS trees being suspect, but many on Ancestry.com are as well. I’ve found my well-documented ancestors on trees where they don’t belong. The only thing I’m finding on the LDS site are actually documents, but since not all of the images are available I have to use their transcribed text. I’ve never heard of Footnote.com before. I use Ancestry.com occasionally because they don’t have enough records for the DC and Maryland areas. This is where they seem to be lacking and have been for years. I’m going into my second year of cleaning up my Legacy data after exporting from another program. While doing this I’m finding missing records and sources for people I haven’t done anything with in many years. Sometimes it’s a good idea to check over old entries and see what needs fixing. That’s the only reason why I recently subscribed to Ancestry to get the missing records that I can’t find elsewhere. Footnote.com was great for Census records and Civil War and Revolutionary War records. The LDS website is fantastic, but it is buyer beware. I say this as a lot has not been properly documented. All you need is one direct ancestor mistake to lead you astray for generations. Trust but verify. Wear out the LDS site to get names and dates and then use an on-line subscription to back it up with documentation. My experience is that both these sites, worldvitalrecords and footnote, will give you a seven day trial run. Then you can use their 'free' connection, to determine if there is enough to use at their place, or order for at home. Each DB (Ancestry, World, NFS, etc) is growing and adding new records daily. What you need to do is decide what you want to find, then locate who has it (if anyone). Do not belittle the 'special'. For instance, there is a company that offers Swedish records, that is over my budget, but I try to get a two week or month 'pass' one a year. You might want to get the WVR month, but what I have found. You can somtimes pick the date range at paying, and aim it at your vacation. You may find something that destroys your biggest brick wall. They used to have a database that was excellent at tracking people (living or dead) from one location to many others. Then unfortunately it was pulled and only accessible by law enforcement. I was able to track a lot of people and figure out how they were related or if they were related. They have something else available now (free through libraries), but it isn't quite as good as the other one. Another thing to check out is what your local library has that is accessible from home. Many of them have newspapers as well and even some obscure ones that are very old. On the WVR site, I've never been able to find a listing of what they have. It must be well hidden. I found that 99.5% of the records that were useful to me were the newspapers. However, what was not told to subscribers is you could only look for 10 surnames--you learn about this restriction after you've been in the site for a little while. At some point, you are asked to identify 10 surnames and are locked into those 10. (They didn't explain why you had to pick 10 surnames so I locked myself into surnames that weren't that important to me.) Once the surname lock happens you can't search the newspapers for differing surnames for about the next 60 days. And, to have full access to anyone at any time in the newspaper archives you have to pay an extra fee. The good news--the WorldVitalRecords people were very helpful and, they lived up to their promise of money back if you were not satisfied. I ended up canceling my WVR subscription and subscribed to Newspaper Archives for about $73 for two years. I'm very pleased with this subscription as you cannot imagine how many obituary, wedding and other various pieces of information I've located. You are able to copy the newspaper articles and their source information into your database or save or print them. Some of the newspapers available are quite old...into the early 1900's and perhaps even earlier than that in some cases. Of course, there are many newspapers that have not yet been scanned but they keep adding to the database. Me, I'm very pleased with Newspaper Archives and would rate it quite high as it gives us a glimpse of ancestor/family activities, interests and events. I've found a number of cousins in these articles as, often, the writer includes the names of everyone who attend. So, in summary, I can't readily compare Newspaper Archives directly to Ancestry which I also like. William, Flash drives are very inexpensive these days; even a 2gb one will work for your travel to a library or FHC; check the sunday sale papers and I'll bet you can find one under $10. I do prefer to work at home myself; it's more convenient and I can work in my jammies; but there is something to be said for going somewhere else and really dedicating yourself to the work you are doing without 'home' distractions. ha ha, Tim, you're so funny! A crippled version? Yep, that's exactly what it is though. I think they call it 'limited', not crippled though. I think it's the 'library version' technically but yes, it is less than what we would like to see. My FHC has a volunteer there 99% of the time who has a personal subscription and will sign on and help you look for something if you need help but it is not available for general searches. You'd think ancestry.com would want to give the FHCs total access so people could go there and check it out and then buy a new subscription. Maybe even a discount for signing up through an FHC account? It would benefit both. But no, that isn't a good marketing strategy I guess. Almost everyone would rather have home access if they can afford it at all and not everyone lives so close to FHCs like I do. Silly Ancestry.com! Re: [LegacyUG] WorldVitalRecords.com
I'll add my 2 cents on this topic. I use all the previously mentioned pay sites and have found good value in every one of them. They are all sufficiently different that even when they overlap some I still find value in checking the multiple sites. What you will find of value to you on a specific site depends greatly on what type of records you are looking for and in what location and what time period. I personally am glad for the diversity of sites and competition as we users get a much better product because of it. My favorite pay sites for the majority of people that I research right now are Ancestry, Footnote, World Vital Records, Newspaper Archives, and Genealogy Bank. Godfrey may have greater value if you research the New England area and their site is in great need of a face-lift. I have dropped my subscription to it and use the FHC access to Godfrey if I need to use it. I have personal subscriptions to all of the others. The Library editions mentioned that are available through some FHC's (not all small FHC's have the same full access to all of the sites because of a combination of vendor restrictions and costs to FamilySearch) are almost identical to the personal subscriptions you may have bought. As an example, at Ancestry you will have a slightly different interface in the Library Edition vs a personal subscription but will be able to access almost 100% of the same material. Regarding World Vital Records and the original query on this thread, I have always found the complete list of databases in a prominent tab right at top center of the home page titled View All Databases. It is definitely not hidden. If I click it, it brings up an alphabetical listing of everyone of them that includes the Database Title, Category and number of Names in each database. It's actually better than some of the other sites. If your budget is limited, go to a FHC or Library that has access and check what each might have of value to you, then spend your money on the site of greatest value to you personally. One size will most likely not fit all, so choose wisely. As mentioned above, I subscribe to all the above sites and have found that they are all worth the time they save and the money they cost so I can access them at home. Calculate the cost of one short research trip away from home for 4-5 days with hotel, food and transportation and it will cover the cost of all of them combined for a year or more. I think that Ancestry charges too much, but it is still a cost I am willing to pay for what they offer me. I got an email the other day from them, but there doesn't seem to be any way to find out what records they have in their collection. I believe FamilyLink.com owns WorldVitalRecords now. In keeping with their tradition of not disclosing their content, I guess they aren't willing to tell us what WVR has either. Re: [LegacyUG] WorldVitalRecords.com
Don, It depends upon what you are looking for and where. I viewed the available database listing before I subscribed. After that I found land and probate records, family histories and so on, not available at other sites. On some searches it may come up with something on Footnote (I have a subscription) or Google Books. The latter is free; however, it is nice to perform one search in one place and come up with the different sources. I also have a subscription to Ancestry.com. My husband and I are avid researchers, and we more than get our money's worth. I research on many subscription and free sites - all have something different to offer. Check out WVRs database listing thoroughly and see what may be of use to you. Re: [LegacyUG] WorldVitalRecords.com
Yes, I did subscribe about a month ago. Re: [LegacyUG] WorldVitalRecords.com
Yvonne, I have searched for hours on WVR and have not been limited in any way on newspapers or other records. The newspapers at WVR are from Newspaper.Archives that you mention. I also forgot to mention that WVR also has family histories from the Godfrey Memorial Library Collection (this is a subscription site!). It took me quite awhile to discover all of the records on this site. The $59.XX is well worth it for my needs. Again, it depends upon what your are looking for and where. Some libraries and local LDS may belong to some of these databases. Remember to unsubsc-ribe the next day, so no second month, or you may find so much to keep it. RE: [LegacyUG] WorldVitalRecords.com
Bill, I found worldvitalrecords.com helpful, particularly in finding references in books. Schedule a week of vacation, kiss your wife goodbye, stay hydrated and wear out your seven day trial. Remember to unsubsc-ribe the next day, so no second month, or you may find so much to keep it. I believe FamilyLink.com owns WorldVitalRecords now. In keeping with their tradition of not disclosing their content, I guess they aren't willing to tell us what WVR has either. I'm finding so much information at the LDS website than I've found anywhere else in years. I wouldn't subscribe to anything sight unseen especially if they don't offer a test drive. RE: [LegacyUG] WorldVitalRecords.com
Bill, Have you tried going to the World Vital Records home page. A listing of what they have is right on the home page in plain sight. Not hidden at all. -Original Message- From: William Boswell [mailto:whbosw...@gmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, January 04, 2011 10:22 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] WorldVitalRecords.com I forgot about Godfrey Memorial Library. I used to belong to them several years ago, but when they lost access to a lot of databases due to ProQuest raising their rates they had to be dropped. What they were left with after that was very little and not worth the subscription so I dropped it. It sounds like it might be worth checking out again.
