[Linux-users] Free printer

2022-10-24 Thread Ross Drummond

I have a network(Ethernet) colour laser printer to give away to a good home.

It is a Brother HL-3150CDN series Printer.

It does PostScript so will work with Linux.

The black toner cartridge is full and the colour cartridges are
approximately 30% full

Email or ring if you are interested

Please note I live in Ashburton.

[Linux-users] Can Linux help me win Lotto?

2022-07-05 Thread Ross Drummond
When choosing Loto numbers I will have quirks such as avoiding an
unlucky number which will tilt the advantage towards the objective
impartiality of the Lotto bouncing balls. Could Linux help?

I only bet the minimum amount which means I can not buy a lucky dip
ticket with the numbers chosen for me at random.

My solution;
For Lotto numbers

shuf --input-range=1-40 --head-count=6 | sort -n

For Powerball numbers

shuf --input-range=1-10 --head-count=4

Am I writing this from the deck of a super yacht? No, but Linux gives me
randomness which evens up the odds a little bit.

Remember the more you gamble the arithmetic grinds you into dust.

[Linux-users] Discovery of global IPv6 address

2017-01-04 Thread Ross Drummond
The problem is I want to discover the global Ipv6 address of hosts on
my LAN knowing the MAC address of each host.

Feeding the MAC address to the program ipv6calc to get the link local
address works fine but when I use this address with ping6 and its
discovery arguments I fail.

An example;

ping6 -I eth0 -N ipv6-global fe80::3631:::

>From the ping6 man page;

-N nodeinfo_option

  ping6 only. Send ICMPv6 Node Information Queries(RFC4620), instead of Echo
Request.   CAP_NET_RAW
capability  is required.

  help Show help for NI support.

  name   Queries for Node Names.

  ipv6 Queries for IPv6 Addresses. There are several IPv6
  specific flags.

 ipv6-global
Request IPv6 global-scope addresses.

 ipv6-sitelocal
Request IPv6 site-local addresses.

 ipv6-linklocal
Request IPv6 link-local addresses.

 ipv6-all
Request IPv6 addresses on other interfaces.

What am I doing wrong, is their another method of discovering the Ipv6
global address of a host on your LAN?

[Linux-users] Joining Horse

2016-08-07 Thread Ross Drummond
Criggie has set up a ssh server called horse for use by CLUG members. I
find it a useful service and recommend it.

Joining is not straightforward as Criggie requires you to generate a
private-public key pair for authentication. It may seem an intimidating
process at fist glance but OpenSSH the most widely used implementation
provides a tool called ssh-keygen to generate these keys. There are
good step by step tutorials available on the web.

You may also wish to connect to the SSH server using the open source
client PuTTY on windows boxes.

Rather than bombarding Criggie with separate keys for each of your
windows boxes you can export your private key for PuTTY to use on its
box.

There is file format incomparability problem when using a ssh-keygen
key on PuTTY but it can be resolved by reading the instructions in the
PuTTY help file

Find the instructions by following this path in the help file;

Help --> Contents -->

Using public keys for SSH authentication -->

Using PuTTYgen the PuTTY key generator -->

Dealing with private keys in other formats.

[Linux-users] Forwarding gui applications over LAN using X - problems

2015-12-08 Thread Ross Drummond
I use the built in ability of windowing applications to be available
on different hosts on my LAN using the X windows client server-model and
network transparency.

Often distributions as a security measure modify
the /etc/X11/init/xserverrc file which starts X by appending "-nolisten
TCP" to the exec line.

I upgraded xorg-server to version 1.17.4. Prior to this upgrade to
enable network transparency I edited the xserverrc file by deleting any
references to "-nolisten TCP"

After the upgrade this method of enabling network transparency no longer
worked. After delving into the depths of the freedesktop.org mail
archives I discovered that you need need to explicitly append the
following to the exec line to get network transparency working;

-listen TCP

Posted to the list so you do not have to repeat my pain.

Cheers Ross Drummond

PS The approved way of forwarding X windows is to do it using SSH. I
only use X forwarding occasionally on my LAN so I reckon the security
provided by SSH is overkill for my situation.

Run the following command in a terminal;

sudo passwd -aS

Read the man page for passwd especially the section explaining the
section explaining the output of the -S command.

If you are satisfied their is no password already set then run this
command;

sudo passwd root

This will prompt you to enter a password and the confirm it. You
should the be able to change you login to root by issuing the su (switch
user) command.

Be aware this an off label method for Ubuntu, you should prefer the
sudo method when doing stuff that requires root.

bounce of his original email. Further faffing about established that the
original email text in the reply had taken up all the screen, the text of my

To avoid a repeat of this I am now using top posting.

What Steve said. All you are likely to change in the PDF is the line of code

A comparison with the codes on this site will help narrow down the cause of
your login rejection.

Some FTP clients may hide the code so you may need to use the BSD ftp command
line program. If it is not installed on your Linux box try a Windows one. All
Windows versions I have come across include the BSD client.

A solution to the brain fade problem when attempting to connect with little
used ftp sites is to have a dot netrc file in your home directory.

It stores URL's logins and passwords, your ftp client should search for this
file and if it finds a matching URL automagicly transmit your login and
password.

Teh Google suggests that gftp supports this file.

Warning: The netrc file stores your login and password in plain text, so you
need to be comfortable with the lack of security in this file.

My computer has a man page for the netrc file format.

Jim Cheetham was kind enough to give me a CD with videos of keynote speakers

The videos are in Ogg Theora format and include some interesting observations

[Linux-users] To ubsubscribe from mailing list

The is a mailto; link in the headers of emails on the list.

Dig out an email sent to you at your old address, you may need to go to 'view

Or alternatively go to this page and follow the unsubscribe instructions at
the bottom of the page;

Please note that both these methods require the From Address to be the email
address which you subscribed to the list on.

PS It is a statement of the bleedin obvious that it is easier to cancel your

[Linux-users] The Tux search and rescue squad

2011-02-26 Thread Ross Drummond
There are going to be a lot of dead and dying computers in Christchurch. They
either had a brick drop on them or took a swan dive onto the floor.

It will become necessary in a lot of circumstances to transfer files from one
hard drive to another. But never fear Tux has a solution underneath his
flipper.

Use SystemRescueCD[1] in either its live CD or bootable USB versions,

and follow these instructions for using netcat[2] and tar to do high volume
file transfers across a network;

[2] called nc in some distributions

PS. This solution will work on NTFS partitions but will cause an error message
when files are opened on the new computer. Googling the error message will
provide a solution.

A good permanent solution is to set up you Linux box to query a Net Time

Re: [Linux-users] Printing at UoC from CLI

2010-11-12 Thread Ross Drummond
Normally if the printer supports Post Script you would point Cups to the
relevant PPD file and tell cups the printers ip address.

However I don't think you will find things so simple. The printer is probably
configured to deny connection attempts from the wilds of the internet and the
university will also require user authentication and page accounting.

Apple computers also use Cups as their printing environment so asking how
users with Apple computers print may yield some useful information.

You should be able to use lpr when logged onto the universities Linux system.
lpstat -a should tell you what printers are available.

On a related tangent, when I want to print something from the shell on a
postscript printer I pipe the command output to encsript and then pipe that
output to lpr. Man enscript for all the gory details.

 on my mum's iMac (I'll try to get her on Haiku when it's past Alpha),
 but that, unlike the printers at UoC, requires no authentication.
 I've just been scp-ing my files from my laptop to my home directory on
 the CS department's Linux-system, and then logging into Linux from the
 labs, opening the file in Evince, and printing it from there. Rather
 cumbersome process, so I'd really like to just print directly from my

 little confidence in their willingness to support UNIX users since the
 switch to Outlook Live.)

I was planning to use the box as a firewall router running pfsense.

Our local lines company is planning (Govt support dependent) to install a
fiber to the premises network in Ashburton.

The optical network terminator that they will use will probably be a dumb
appliance, so you will need something between your local LAN and the nasty
wider world. A pfsense box with this card can be used as a dual purpose router
and firewall.

If it is going to be used as a pfsense box why am I mucking around with Linux
and not FreeBSD? The answer is that I am not familiar with FreeBSD and am far
more comfortable with Linux especially if low level debugging is required.

When I am happy with what I know about this card, Linux can be wiped and
pfsense installed.

[Linux-users] I gave away my ssh password

2010-09-01 Thread Ross Drummond
I was using ssh to connect to Craigs horse server.

I miss typed the URL of this server which took me to another unknown ssh
server which prompted me for a login and password before refusing me a login.

Fortunately I was able to get hold of Craig and get the password changed right
away.

I have found a solution which reduces the risk of miss typing the ssh servers
URL.

Create a file, ~/.sss/config and add the following stanza;

Hosthorse
HostNameshell.clug.org.nz
Port22
Userme

Now when I wish to connect to horse I just type 'ssh horse'
