(Or it is pointing to a sock that doesn't accomplish its job.) Expected behavior: You run ssh myn...@mydomain.net and the password manager opens a GUI to ask for the passphrase. Once unlocked, it remains unlocked until you log off. Moreover, at that moment of unlocking you can tell it to remember the passphrase forever so it gets automatically unlocked next time you login. Any other application that uses ssh-like connections will find this key unlocked as well. Observed behavior: You run ssh myn...@mydomain.net and it prompts you for the key passphrase in the terminal. You run it again, you are prompted again. Any other application that uses ssh-like connections will result in a passphrase prompt as well. How to reproduce: Enter Lubuntu session Open Passwords and Encryption Keys Create a Secure Shell key Configure this key to some domain you can ssh to Open a terminal and run ssh myn...@mydomain.net You are promted for a password in the terminal interface. Partial workaround: Here is a partial workaround for a terminal session: export SSH_AUTH_SOCK=`echo /tmp/keyring*/ssh` after the keyring-daemon has been loaded. But it only works within the same terminal session, not for other applications that launch ssh-like processes. This is a quick summarise of the different type of installation, up-to-date with 11.10 : By using desktop ISO : Installation done using Ubiquity + a live session, by copying the image of the CD into the system. It's the recommend way for testing and installing Lubuntu. Note that using the live session or the Install only mode will do teh same result, just using less memory. By using alternate ISO : Installation using debian installer type. No live session available. Design to install Lubuntu on everything, especially if the Ubiquity or the live session is not supported. You can do the same with the command line, by using sudo apt-get install lubuntu-desktop, on a minimum Ubuntu installation (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems#Install_an_Ubuntu_command-line_system) Minimal installation : Only on a command line system, just install the lubuntu-core by doing sudo apt-get install lubuntu-core. It should install only core components of Lubuntu + the artwork. I would suggest to also install lxdm or lightdm to have a graphical login manager. As you can see, the --no-install-recommends is not necessary since 11.10. It can be used for people who wants minimal depends, but you have to be carefull, because sometimes some recommended packages are very useful, and so not installed if you use --no-install-recommends. One idea is to have in the software-center a button to support upstream projects, or / and having a page with all the support links. But, money doesn't do all. For an open source project, we primarily need users, developers, testers, and people who spread the work :) Well, I think there is a bug using these on both Lubuntu 11.10 and 11.04. On 11.10, adding the above two packages will not add the username. I have asked that question because there is a case where there are 3 different users are using the same PC and they want something to display the name of the current logged in user beside a feature to switch to another user. indicator-me package has 126 files to be downloaded and installed. I was wondering if it's impossible to use indicator me in 11.10, is there any other alternative? Maybe (just a guess) it's because lxdm doesn't support switching user, so adding indicator-session doesn't show the user name, because it's an indicator for switching user. Wouldn't it be valuable to determine a way of gathering data about how many people use Lubuntu, and how they use it? I think information on how users use the system, and what they want from it is always interesting. The problem is to organize the collect of the information in a way it's easy to analyze. A survey could be a good idea to gather this type of information. Also, having popular requests from users doesn't mean we will implement them :) We have to keep with our policy : keep it fast and easy to use :) About the number of users, I personally doesn't care too much. Defining a class registering a new GObject class at runtime and
create much overhead since C has no object supports. OO is not
that cheap with GObject though using it is quite easy in Vala. I'd
avoid overuse of classes.
To reduce overhead of GObject, we can use [Compact] attribute when
defining classes when some features provided by GObject, like
signals, is not absolutely needed.
* Use of LibGee
Most of the time, static arrays or built-in data strucures
provided by glib itself should be enough. Maybe we don't need
LibGee here.
* Initial options support is good, especially the keyboard and
xrandr one.
* Plugin actually is a good idea. I wanted to do that for quite a
long time, but I don't have the time to do it.
* For Dbus interface, I'd suggest using the same interface as gnome
rather than using our own namespace. Most of the gnome
applications and in the future, gtk3 applications, has built-in
supports to interact with gnome session manager. If we use
different dbus interfaces, than we need to patch every
applications to add lxsession support, which can be very painful.
* For lxsession-edit, merging it with lxsession should be good for
maintainance since it's useless when used along.
* If you're going to take its maintaince, it's highly appreciated.

Thanks for the comments, I added them to the TODO list. I'm not sure
about the timing to implement them :)
Next plan is to release it in PPA for wider testing. I consider it now
stable and with at least the same features than before the rewrite.
If there is no complain, I'm going to merge it in trunk, and prepare it
for an alpha release (0.4.9.1).
I plan to follow the Ubuntu schedule for lxsession, which mean :
* No new features on February (the final list of features will depend
on the time I have).
* Some beta releases during February / March
* String freeze on March
* A final version at the end of March

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu 12.04 Alpha 1 Testing
Hi, The 1st Alpha of Lubuntu 12.04 is planned for Thurday. We started the ISO testing for Alpha 1, so if you want to help, you can join the testing process :) If you know how to use a virtual machine (Virtualbox) and how to install Lubuntu, you can help ! :) You can follow the steps on this wiki page : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Procedures . We uses a new ISO tracker to collect the results : http://91.189.93.73 . There are 4 ISOs that you can test : Live CD (Desktop) and Alternate ISO, both on i386 and amd64. All need to be tested, to be able to publish an Alpha 1. To be short, just download the ISO, run it into VirtualBox, check the testcase on the page of the ISO, and report the result. You don't need any technical knowledge, and if you have questions, you can ask on #lubuntu or #ubuntu-testing. Hi, I'm working since some times to some improvements to lxsession. Glade as the tool to build UIs from version 2.0 has the capability to use gtkbuilder to build its ui forms. Also the ubuntu programming infrastructure quickly uses glade (again the tool) with its default gtkbuilder capabilities. So as far as I see it we don't have any big problem or are they UIs that use the glade library instead the gtkbuilder library in Lubuntu ? (Again glade library does not mean that they were created with glade) The goal is to remove the depends on libglade. I think it's pretty useless to use an external library for something provided by gtk itself (unless the support is not complete enough). [Lubuntu-desktop] Adding powerpc ISO for 12.04 ?
Hi again, There are some requests to add a powerpc version of Lubuntu ISO. We didn't do this in the past because there was no testers for the ISO. It seems that people are interesting to use it and to test it during the 12.04 development cycle. If the persons could confirm me this interest, I can request to add powerpc to the list of Lubuntu version. To be official, the powerpc ISO needs be tested during Alpha, Beta and Final ISO testing. You can see the procedure on the wiki : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Procedures It's quite simple, and doesn't require any technical skills. Of course, I can help people during the testing period if they want. Let me know if there are still an interest for testing this ISO, so we can start the tests with Alpha 1 (next week). Thanks Mario. Currently, the situation is not very nice, the mailing list is not open anymore, and the PPA is too common. We have to change the mailing or the PPA location, or both. About the mailing list, the best solution is probably to swith to one (or 1 for user help, and 1 for devel ?) on https://lists.ubuntu.com/, since it's a more standart mailing list (no need to be member of the team). The PPA will probably diseapears with the time, we need more specialized PPAs, instead of one with many varous stuff in it. This is some comments about some proposals you made. Some concerns are probably shared among the community, so it's not useless that I answer some of them : LTS : Again, it's not a choice which depends on the users, but a decision made by the developers. Of course I would like to be LTS, like I would like to buy an expensive car. The fact is, we can't. And even if we try, it could be so expensive that it will block us to do new cool stuff, because we have to maintain 12.04. Applications by default : The policy is to keep existing applications, unless we think there are serious reasons to switch. In this case, we open a discussion, case by case, on the mailing list. Changing application by default is not something we should do often. People who rely on them expect stability. The others can just install what they want (they have the skills to do this). Bug reports : Some suggestions you made should be bug reports, not suggestions. Adding them on the forum will not help developers to fix them. We already have not enough time to look at all the bugs, so I'm sure we will have no time to look at them on a forum, or IRC. Finally, some of your suggestions was already discussed in the past. I don't know how we can do to avoid the same subjects to come over and over ... [Lubuntu-desktop] Weekly meetings - Finding the right time
Hi, One thing I would like to organize for this cycle, is a weekly meeting on IRC, to discuss topics more easily and to take decisions when it's needed. I think we have enough topics to start on a weekly base, but we can do it less often in the future, if it's not necessary. Finding a time for this is ... not very easy :) I don't want to do it during the week-end, to be all able to have a week-end far from IT and Internet connection :) I also don't think we should change the time for every meetings, because it's the best solution to forget the meeting. But, we can change it after some time (like 3 months). I propose to begin with this schedule : Wednesday, 7:00 PM UTC, starting on the 23th. It'll not be necessary to attempt all the meetings. You can attempt when you have subjects to discuss, but you can also adding a subject to the schedule, so people can discuss it even if you can't be online at this time. Let me know what you think about this. Hi, Good to have some news from you :) I done some testing during the UDS, and the results are not bad :) But I imagine porting it to Vala + Packagekit will be even better :) I assume the port to PackageKit is necessary before the Vala one, because I don't think aptdaemon is available in Vala. Please focus on this one before breaking the application in the rewrite. Don't hesitate to publish your work in a separate branch, so people can test and help you if it's necessary. I also have some suggestions : * Use check-language-support after installing a package, to check if language package need to be installed. By launching it, it should display the packages that need to be installed * Add a timeout when using the search box, like 0.5s before starting to display the results. On my system, I just have the time to enter 1 letter, and the CPU is at 100 % because the search started. If I have the time to enter more letters, my search will be more accurate, and the CPU will be used only when I need it. * Display only 20 (?) results for each view, and add a button Display all results. It should reduce the first search, and don't use the CPU to display hundreds of results. Let me know if you need more info, or bug reports. Hi, I'm not very fan of a change unless we have a strong consensus for another browser. But, this is my opinion : - We should only consider Chromium or Firefox, because they have a strong upstream and are well maintained. Browser is a very important part of a system, and we really don't have time to do maintenance on it. Adopting Midori for example, means we have to do the maintenance on Ubuntu (triage bugs, testing, maybe some packaging ...). - Benchmark are needed, because just saying it's light, doesn't mean it's always light. Also, the memory usage for Chromium is special, because it shares memory (there is an article from a dev of Chromium somewhere in the Web which explain it). - Finally, it needs to be light on old hardware. Remember, it's the main target for Lubuntu. So far, Chromium seems better on this type of machine. So far, I don't see advantages to switch to Firefox. However, having a forum thread for a bookmark purpose and chatting is also useful, as long as it points to wiki pages, and people are encourage to contribute to the wiki. Having useful answer or info in a post will be lost if nobody save it on the wiki. Even Askubuntu can be used, with some links to the wiki also. If you have a plan to make it as good as Arch Wiki (which has almost everything about Arch) then I'm more than ready but ... I'm doing many other things like Forum, Testing, etc etc and I don't want to lose my focus on that. More people must be involved on the Wiki Pages IMHO. For me, Forum is much easier to maintain and then I update the Wiki Pages accordingly. Also, Traffic on Forum is much more. Above all, I don't really feel comfortable when I browse our Wiki because I feel there is something missing. I think the whole thing needs to be reviewed and re-organized. IMHO of course. Another thing is: www.lubuntu.net must be back to action again. I see NO POINT of re-directing the page to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu I have asked before if I can update it and I've been told that this access can't be given to new people. Understood. But someone must take the responsibility and focus on our website. Solution : Extend lxsession to accept configuration from other utility like arandr. - Lxsession options / services : Add possibility to configure applications by default, and to enable them or not (screensaver, power-management ...) - lubuntu-software-center : Add by default, but keep synaptic. Hi, We just released 11.10, but it also means that 12.04 development started. It will be the first development cycle after adoption of Lubuntu in Ubuntu family, which come with some consequences. Firstly, we will have the same schedule than Ubuntu : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PreciseReleaseSchedule. Secondly, we can use UDS to discuss plans for 12.04, new features etc ... I would like to use this summit to decide our roadmap for the 12.04, and take decisions we usually took later in the cycle, like new applications by default, new features planned etc ... But, I still want to discuss the differents topics on the mailing before the UDS, to have input from everyones. For the record, UDS starts the 31 October, and finishes the 5 November. Personally, I have 3 topics in mind, and I started to write some notes about them on a wiki page : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Developers/P-Plan 1. Optimizations : * Remove unnecessary depends (gconf, glade, other gnome old library ?) * Evaluate a first move to GTK3 (because there will be less maintenance / optimization on GTK2 now) * Optimize the theme 2. User experience : * Add missing features easy to implement and which make our users happy :) * Provide new shiny stuff (lubuntu-software-center, catfish ...) * Fix issues which are here since too much time (keymap switch, screensaver ...) 3. Team Organisation : * Find a way to organize and coordinate our work * Find a way to welcome new members / contributors Also, an important detail is that Ubuntu 12.04 will be an LTS version, but Lubuntu will NOT be an LTS. The main reason is because LTS needs support, update and security fixes for 3 years, which is not possible for Lubuntu team (too much work). Boot is a problem for all Ubuntu releases, and work will be done in 12.04 to improve the situation. For the lag, are you using xcompmgr for your tests ? Do you test without it ? Maybe it's a driver regression using xcompmgr (and so compositing).
