[Lubuntu-desktop] [Bug 664206] Re: SSH_AUTH_SOCK not being properly set: user has to type password even if saved in the password manager

Thanks for the patch, I'll add it for Precise. I'll keep a bug on
lxsession, because it should be handle automaticly by lxsession

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: lxde-common

SSH_AUTH_SOCK is not being properly set. (Or it is pointing to a sock
  that doesn't accomplish its job.)

  Expected behavior:
You run ssh myn...@mydomain.net and the password manager opens a GUI to ask
for the passphrase. Once unlocked, it remains unlocked until you log off.
Moreover, at that moment of unlocking you can tell it to remember the
passphrase forever so it gets automatically unlocked next time you login. Any
other application that uses ssh-like connections will find this key unlocked as
well.

  Observed behavior:
You run ssh myn...@mydomain.net and it prompts you for the key passphrase
in the terminal. You run it again, you are prompted again. Any other
application that uses ssh-like connections will result in a passphrase prompt
as well.

  How to reproduce:
  Enter Lubuntu session
  Open Passwords and Encryption Keys
  Create a Secure Shell key
Configure this key to some domain you can ssh to
Open a terminal and run ssh myn...@mydomain.net
You are promted for a password in the terminal interface.

  Partial workaround:
Here is a partial workaround for a terminal session: export
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=`echo /tmp/keyring*/ssh` after the keyring-daemon has been loaded.
But it only works within the same terminal session, not for other
applications that launch ssh-like processes.
Disclaim: it works for Lubuntu session inside a Ubuntu 10.04 install, with
GDM as session manager.

  $ printenv SSH_AUTH_SOCK
  /tmp/ssh-PZgdl10603/agent.10603
  $ ssh mydomain
Enter passphrase for key '/home/leorolla/.ssh/id_rsa': [pressed ^C]
  $ export SSH_AUTH_SOCK=`echo /tmp/keyring*/ssh`
  $ printenv SSH_AUTH_SOCK
  /tmp/keyring-k3BQQd/ssh
  $ ssh mydomain
Last login: Wed Oct 20 19:58:06 2010 from
  Your default printer is
  mydomain:leorolla [blinking cursor!]

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Minimal Install issue in Wiki

2011-12-29 Thread Julien Lavergne
This is a quick summarise of the different type of installation,
up-to-date with 11.10 :

By using desktop ISO : Installation done using Ubiquity + a live
session, by copying the image of the CD into the system. It's the
recommend way for testing and installing Lubuntu. Note that using the
live session or the Install only mode will do teh same result, just
using less memory.

By using alternate ISO : Installation using debian installer type. No
live session available. Design to install Lubuntu on everything,
especially if the Ubiquity or the live session is not supported. You can
do the same with the command line, by using sudo apt-get install
lubuntu-desktop, on a minimum Ubuntu installation (see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems#Install_an_Ubuntu_command-line_system)

Minimal installation : Only on a command line system, just install the
lubuntu-core by doing sudo apt-get install lubuntu-core. It should
install only core components of Lubuntu + the artwork. I would suggest
to also install lxdm or lightdm to have a graphical login manager.

As you can see, the --no-install-recommends is not necessary since
11.10. It can be used for people who wants minimal depends, but you have
to be carefull, because sometimes some recommended packages are very
useful, and so not installed if you use --no-install-recommends. I don't
think we need other type of installation, unless I miss a use case :)

Julien Lavergne

As I understand, Minimal Install is for people who want to get a

Using --no-install-recommends could make newbie confused when

Yes, it's a good idea to include such software. However, before spending
time to package / test / fix it, I would like to know if there are other
applications like this available, and try to pick the best one.

Currently, not having GTK3 support is not a blocker, but we need to have
it in mind when choosing the application. For example, having support
for openbox 3.5.0 is IMO much more important.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Possible Bug in /usr/bin/startlubuntu

2011-12-29 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

Thanks for your help on this :) Let me comment the 3 points :

Le 12/29/2011 11:32 PM, Axel FILMORE a écrit :

I would see three problems :
 1) /etc/xdg/xdg-/usr/bin/startlubuntu doesn't exist and looks weird.
You should have /etc/xdg/xdg-Lubuntu instead. It's a common path for
configuration files, using by Xubuntu for example (all it's in
/etc/xdg/xdg-Xubuntu).
It was introduced sometimes ago, but I didn't find any advantage to move
from /etc/xdg/lubuntu to this location.

 2) /usr/bin/startlubuntu appends /etc/xdg once more.
I fixed it for 12.04, it's already append by a Xsession.d script
(/etc/X11/Xsession.d/60x11-common_xdg_path).

 3) lxsession parses any $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS/autostart that exists.
Yes, there were complains about applications run twice using autostart,
it's probably because of this. Thanks :) Unfortunately, I'm in the
middle of rewriting this part of lxsession, so I can't include your
patch like this, but I'll make sure the behaviour is correct on the new
lxsession.

If I remember correctly, drop xcreensaver was a bad idea just for the
 blocking screen.
I've been using a little Ubuntu 11.10 and I'm wondering if they still
use a screensaver at all. Maybe they are using something different
 just to block the screen?
If yes, maybe we could use the same thing and cut xcreensaver from
 Lubuntu.

They are using compiz to lock the screen, so we can't use the same :)
1 thing I will change for 12.04 is to change the behavior by default,
using only a blank screen instead of the animated one. It should be
nicer for your type of configuration.

Overall, I recommend using existing tools and data over trying to build
a new survey mechanism from scratch.
Yes, popcon is handy for pure statistics, but you can't use it for
feedbacks about the usability of the system, or what user would like to
see in priority.

Of course, using a survey is not 100% reliable, but I don't think any
tools which gather this type of data is 100% reliable :) I think a
survey done once after each release, could be a good source of information.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Me again :)

2011-12-18 Thread Julien Lavergne
Le 12/17/2011 09:59 PM, amjjawad HOOHAA a écrit :

That would be great. We do need such team which should NOT be isolated
from Ubuntu Team (sorry if I didn't explain myself previously). The
Marketing Team Members are Lubuntu Members who will be dedicated to do
one main job/task and that will be Marketing.

Also, we do need a Wiki or Documentation Team.
In my mind, the teams should be free to organize themself, and to work
as they like. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Teams_New for my first
ideas on the topic.

What about a Sub-Forum on LXDE Forum? if that's possible, it would be
great since I'm a moderator there. However, someone must do something
please about the continuous problem on LXDE Website. It's up and down
and when it's up, it's very slow.
It sounds like a good idea.

What I'm thinking and wondering about: Having more resources depends
on money or something else? also, if we are an official variant for
Ubuntu then it's not bad idea at all if Canonical spend something to
improve Lubuntu in any possible way. I have no idea how their system
work and to be honest don't want to be involved, I have enough stuff
to care about but I was just wondering.
I'll keep searching for people who can really support us financially.
In case I find someone, what shall I do?
We never discuss the financial case, and it's quite a complex topic :)
Imagine, you want to give 10 € to Lubuntu, how do you share it between
people who make Lubuntu :
- Lubuntu project (and who in the Lubuntu project ?)
- Ubuntu project (because we are based on Ubuntu)
- Debian project (because we are besed on Ubuntu, which is base on Debian)
- LXDE project (because we used many LXDE components)
- Other upstream projects (kernel, abiword, gnome-mplayer ...)
- ...

One idea is to have in the software-center a button to support upstream
projects, or / and having a page with all the support links.

But, money doesn't do all. For an open source project, we primarily need
users, developers, testers, and people who spread the work :)

Well, I think there is a bug using these on both Lubuntu 11.10 and 11.04.
On 11.10, adding the above two packages will not add the username.
Adding the username must be done through indicator-me which is gone
in 11.10 and no longer in the repositories.
 http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/07/ubuntu-11-10-menu-goodbye/

As for 11.04, indicator-me package is still in the repositories but
when I added it and rebooted, it's done and on PCManFM, there is no
File, Edit, etc ... I have no idea what happened.

There is already some bugs and I commented on one of them but can't
 find it right now.
I have asked that question because there is a case where there are 3
different users are using the same PC and they want something to
display the name of the current logged in user beside a feature to
 switch to another user.
indicator-me package has 126 files to be downloaded and installed. I
was wondering if it's impossible to use indicator me in 11.10, is
 there any other alternative?
Maybe (just a guess) it's because lxdm doesn't support switching user,
so adding indicator-session doesn't show the user name, because it's an
indicator for switching user.

Julien Lavergne

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Users

A few weeks ago on this list, a question was raised about the current
number of Lubuntu users. I was a little surprised that no one had a
clear idea, and that estimates varied widely. It seems a little
dangerous from a development standpoint to have so little information
about your userbase, doesn't it? Wouldn't it be valuable to determine
a way of gathering data about how many people use Lubuntu, and how
 they use it?
I think information on how users use the system, and what they want from
it is always interesting. The problem is to organize the collect of the
information in a way it's easy to analyze. A survey could be a good idea
to gather this type of information.

Also, having popular requests from users doesn't mean we will implement
them :) We have to keep with our policy : keep it fast and easy to use :)

About the number of users, I personally doesn't care too much. Sure,
having a good rank in Distrowatch is nice, but we can live without it :)

 do that :)
I'll put this topic for discussion in the next team meeting. I would
like to set up teams, and the Marketing team is one of them.

2- What are the chances of having a dedicated Forum JUST for Lubuntu?
or maybe a Sub-Forum either on Ubuntu Forum or LXDE Forum? needless to
say I'm more than up to this but again, I'd like to propose the idea here.
On http://ubuntuforums.org/, I'm not sure there are dedicated forum for
Kubuntu, Xubuntu ... Using tag seems to be useful, because some requests
/ questions may apply to all the derivatives.

3- Lubuntu is an official variant of Ubuntu now. Regarding the funds
and stuff like that, is Canonical taking care of that? what if I find
someone who can denote or help us financially? I understand it's free
OS but I'm working on that ... I'm looking for someone to denote or
 help us financially.
Canonical doesn't provide direct financial support, unless they have
financial interest :) They already provide various support, by giving us
access to some services, see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RecognizedDerivatives for details.

4- Like GNOME 2.xx (say Ubuntu 10.04), how can I add my username to
the panel? is there anyway? in Ubuntu 10.04, I can see my username on
the top panel but how hard or easy is it to do the same on Lubuntu?
Using indicator-session-gtk2 + the indicator applet of lxpanel should
work. The support for indicators in Lubuntu is not perfect, some of them
have need Ubuntu / GNOME components to run properly.

there is NO Real Solution/Fix to a particular issue OR it's an obvious
bug (but again, how can we tell whether it's a bug or not?).
For a small (BUT GREAT) team like us (Lubuntu), reporting issues on
Launchpad directly without checking the forum will add extra work to
the developer and above all, on forums, you probably could find a
solution easier and faster. Maybe I'm wrong but this is what I think.
Sometimes, the solution you provide may hide a real bug. I'm ok than
some issues doesn't have to be reported on launchpad. But it's important
to use launchpad, developers look at launchpad, not the forum.
And it's possible that a solution provided can be included directly in
Lubuntu, to be available for everyone :)

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] [Lxde-list] LXSession improvements

2011-12-08 Thread Julien Lavergne

Le 11/30/2011 05:23 AM, PCMan a écrit :
Looks quite good generally and source code written in vala is much
 more readable then GObject/C. :-)
 Some comments:

   * initial applications by default stuff:
gnome classifies applications by stages rather than types.
some applications should be loadad during initialization stage.
some are loaded along with the desktop panel, such as some applets
some are loaded when the panel is loaded and when the desktop
 icons are being loaded
 others are loaded thereafter.
To ensure applications are loaded at right time, interaction with
 session manager is needed.
For example, the desktop panel should inform the session manager
 when it's fully loaded.
Then, the session manager enters next stage and loads applications
 of the next stage.
Applications which cannot communicate with the session manager
 cannot support this.
Executing a command earlier doesn't guarantee that it will finish
loading earlier. This is an issue to solve.
   * Regarding to the implementation, an application class with a data
member named type is enough IMHO.
 for example:
 public enum AppType {
 WM,
 PANEL,
 DESKTOP
 }
 public class App {
 private AppType type;
 }

Defining a class registering a new GObject class at runtime and
create much overhead since C has no object supports. OO is not
that cheap with GObject though using it is quite easy in Vala. I'd
 avoid overuse of classes.
To reduce overhead of GObject, we can use [Compact] attribute when
defining classes when some features provided by GObject, like
 signals, is not absolutely needed.

   * Use of LibGee
Most of the time, static arrays or built-in data strucures
provided by glib itself should be enough. Maybe we don't need
 LibGee here.

   * Initial options support is good, especially the keyboard and
 xrandr one.

   * Plugin actually is a good idea. I wanted to do that for quite a
long time, but I don't have the time to do it.

   * For Dbus interface, I'd suggest using the same interface as gnome
rather than using our own namespace. Most of the gnome
applications and in the future, gtk3 applications, has built-in
supports to interact with gnome session manager. If we use
different dbus interfaces, than we need to patch every
applications to add lxsession support, which can be very painful.

   * For lxsession-edit, merging it with lxsession should be good for
maintainance since it's useless when used along.

   * If you're going to take its maintaince, it's highly appreciated.
 Thanks for the great job!

Thanks for the comments, I added them to the TODO list. I'm not sure
about the timing to implement them :)

Next plan is to release it in PPA for wider testing. I consider it now
stable and with at least the same features than before the rewrite.
If there is no complain, I'm going to merge it in trunk, and prepare it
for an alpha release (0.4.9.1).

I plan to follow the Ubuntu schedule for lxsession, which mean :
 * No new features on February (the final list of features will depend
on the time I have).
 * Some beta releases during February / March
 * String freeze on March
 * A final version at the end of March

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu 12.04 Alpha 1 Testing

2011-11-29 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

The 1st Alpha of Lubuntu 12.04 is planned for Thurday. We started the
ISO testing for Alpha 1, so if you want to help, you can join the
testing process :)

If you know how to use a virtual machine (Virtualbox) and how to install
Lubuntu, you can help ! :) You can follow the steps on this wiki page :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Procedures .

We uses a new ISO tracker to collect the results : http://91.189.93.73 .
There are 4 ISOs that you can test : Live CD (Desktop) and Alternate
ISO, both on i386 and amd64. All need to be tested, to be able to
publish an Alpha 1.

To be short, just download the ISO, run it into VirtualBox, check the
testcase on the page of the ISO, and report the result.

You don't need any technical knowledge, and if you have questions, you
can ask on #lubuntu or #ubuntu-testing.

Thanks in advance ! :)

Julien Lavergne

[Lubuntu-desktop] LXSession improvements

2011-11-29 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

I'm working since some times to some improvements to lxsession.
With my experiments, I ended to rewrite some part in Vala, since C have
problems with me :)

You can find the result on the options branch of lxsession :
http://lxde.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=lxde/lxsession;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/options

The main new features are :
* Add initial applications by default support (panel, screensaver ...).
It's a way to configure applications started by default, rather than
just adding a line in autostart
 * Add initial options support (Keymap, XRandr, Keyring). It's the
ability to add some options add start-up, like a screen resolution
(instead of using a .desktop file in autostart directory).
* Add initial Dbus support (draft of org.lxde.SessionManager interface,
GNOME compat mode)

You can have a look at the new desktop.conf file for the new options
available :
http://lxde.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=lxde/lxsession;a=blob;f=desktop.conf.example;h=8ae0636a452b6a2e8e8728c039c5d3f0397996c4;hb=refs/heads/options

It should be already usable, the only regression I know is the logout
function of lxsession-logout which is broken.

I'll appreciate comments on this :) Especialy on the Dbus interface,
what do you expect from a session manager to be available via Dbus ? Do
you expect other features from the session manager ?

I would like in the future to take the maintainance of lxsession and try
to add more improvements, like :
* Duplicate check, to not autostart an application twice
* Merge back lxpolkit and lxsession-edit changes in lxsession
* More application by default, and more automatic / smart detections
* Finalize the Dbus interface
* Improve lxsession-edit to configure the new options.

That makes sense, thanks. Actually it looks like we are supposed to
migrate from gconf to GSettings, which is a higher level GNOME API that
has dconf as its default back end under Unix-like OSes.
Currently, we have gconf, xfconf, and dconf running in Lubuntu. Remove
gconf will remove 1 on them, and it's also the direction of GNOME.
Ubuntu also tries to remove depends on gconf for the main image, but the
progress is slow.

This does raise another question: for packages that are not
Lubuntu-specific, such as gksu, is the plan for us (few) Lubuntu devs to
do the migration work, or just to wait for someone else to do it for us?
No, the priority is the glade migration because only Lubuntu specific
packages are involved.
For gconf, we can start the migration for our packages, waiting for the
others not specific to be migrated also. If you look at the blueprint (
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/other-lubuntu-p-optimizations)
only the glade items are in the work items, not the gconf ones.

No, just using GtkBuilder instead of glade should be fine :
 http://developer.gnome.org/gtk/2.24/gtk-migrating-GtkBuilder.html

To bring some clearness in here. Glade as the tool to build UIs from
version 2.0 has the capability to use gtkbuilder to build its ui forms.
Also the ubuntu programming infrastructure quickly uses glade (again the
tool) with its default gtkbuilder capabilities.
So as far as I see it we don't have any big problem or are they UIs that
use the glade library instead the gtkbuilder library in Lubuntu ? (Again
glade library does not mean that they were created with glade)

The goal is to remove the depends on libglade. I think it's pretty useless to
use an external library for something provided by gtk itself (unless the
support is not complete enough).

There are some requests to add a powerpc version of Lubuntu ISO. We

It seems that people are interesting to use it and to test it during the
12.04 development cycle. If the persons could confirm me this interest,
I can request to add powerpc to the list of Lubuntu version.

To be official, the powerpc ISO needs be tested during Alpha, Beta and
Final ISO testing. You can see the procedure on the wiki :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Procedures It's quite simple, and
doesn't require any technical skills. Of course, I can help people
during the testing period if they want.

Let me know if there are still an interest for testing this ISO, so we
can start the tests with Alpha 1 (next week).

Per discussion at UDS the kernel team is proposing to drop the non-PAE
i386 flavour. The upgrade path for non-PAE users will be the PAE kernel.
Those CPUs that do not have i686 and PAE support will be orphaned. To
the best of my knowledge, these include Intel CPUs prior to Pentium II,
400Mhz Pentium M, VIA C3, and Geode LX. As far as I know, there are no
laptop or desktop class CPUs being produced that do not meet these
minimum requirements.

Before I do something that is difficult to revert, I would like to hear
from the development community why we should continue to maintain a
kernel flavour that is (in my opinion) getting increasingly low
utilization. It is my feeling that an extremely high percentage of users
of the non-PAE kernel have a CPU that is PAE capable.

If there is sufficient community demand (and support), I would be
willing to sponsor the first non-PAE kernel upload to Universe.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/Specs/PreciseKernelConfigReview

We'll be conducting a similar survey for powerpc.

P.S. For those of you that are totally confused by this email, PAE
(Physical Address Extension) was an addition to 32 bit x86 CPUs that
allowed them to address more then 4GB physical memory.

Thanks Mario.

Currently, the situation is not very nice, the mailing list is not open
anymore, and the PPA is too common. We have to change the mailing or the PPA
location, or both.

About the mailing list, the best solution is probably to swith to one (or 1 for
user help, and 1 for devel ?) on https://lists.ubuntu.com/, since it's a more
standart mailing list (no need to be member of the team).

The PPA will probably diseapears with the time, we need more specialized PPAs,
instead of one with many varous stuff in it.

Last week we wrote to tell you that on 2011-11-23 we will be changing the
membership policy of your Launchpad team lubuntu-desktop to moderated.
We're doing this to protect the people who use that team's Personal Package
 Archive (PPA).

Right now, lubuntu-desktop has an open membership policy, meaning anyone
can join the team and upload potentially malicious packages to the PPA.

We strongly recommend that you change your team's membership policy now and
audit the team's membership to make sure that you trust each member.

You can change the team's membership policy here:

  https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-desktop/+edit

Otherwise, you can delete the team's PPA and retain the open membership
 policy.

Before you can create a new team PPA, a team's membership policy must be
either moderated or restricted. Your team was created before we improved
 the security around team PPAs.

These changes won't have any affect on the team's current members. However
it does mean that you'll have to approve new team members.

There's more about Launchpad's team membership policies here:

lubuntu-desktop meta package, and then removing the unnecessary stuff is
not the same as a fresh Lubuntu install. That being said, it seems to me
that this is a little misleading and perhaps inappropriate. What is true
for Lubuntu is not necessarily true for Ubuntu and vice versa. This
seems consistent with Elbuntu, for example, which shows up in the list
of distros on Launchpad. That being said, what about having Lubuntu
listed in the distro list and perhaps creating a *l*ubuntu-bug wrapper
 for apport. Thoughts?

It is the way Launchpad works, all derivatives are under Ubuntu, because we
share the same reporitories. The others distributions lised in Launchpad are
outside the Ubuntu family.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Following development of Lubuntu 12.04

2011-11-14 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi again,

I have a bit more time to explain how you can follow the development of Lubuntu
12.04.

The first source of information is here :
http://status.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-precise/group/topic-precise-flavor-lubuntu.html

It shows the advancement and the tasks planned for 12.04.

To edit the tasks, you need to go to each blueprints, in Contributing
Blueprints section. See also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WorkItemsHowto to how you
can edit the tasks.

Another important page is the Schedule, which is shared with Ubuntu and other
derivatives : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PrecisePangolin/ReleaseSchedule . For
example, FeatureFreeze is the date when no more feature should be added.

You also subscribe to changes done on Ubuntu :
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/Precise-changes

With this, you should be pretty much up-to-date :)

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] [Lubuntu 12.04] My Suggestions

2011-11-14 Thread Julien Lavergne

This is some comments about some proposals you made. Some concerns are probably
shared among the community, so it's not useless that I answer some of them :

LTS :
Again, it's not a choice which depends on the users, but a decision made by the
developers. Of course I would like to be LTS, like I would like to buy an
expensive car. The fact is, we can't. And even if we try, it could be so
expensive that it will block us to do new cool stuff, because we have to
maintain 12.04.

Applications by default :
The policy is to keep existing applications, unless we think there are serious
reasons to switch. In this case, we open a discussion, case by case, on the
mailing list. Changing application by default is not something we should do
often. People who rely on them expect stability. The others can just install
what they want (they have the skills to do this).

Bug reports :
Some suggestions you made should be bug reports, not suggestions. Adding them
on the forum will not help developers to fix them. We already have not enough
time to look at all the bugs, so I'm sure we will have no time to look at them
on a forum, or IRC.

Finally, some of your suggestions was already discussed in the past. I don't
know how we can do to avoid the same subjects to come over and over ...

Julien Lavergne

Oh, nice :) That's a lot prettier than the wiki page and blueprint text.

I've packaged Viewnior 1.1, using its original tarball (there is a
package done by its author, but it was done as a native package with
sources, changes and /debian all in one special tarball... confused
me!). Once I test it a bit more, I'll contact the author and let him
know, and see if I can find a friendly DD to sponsor an upload into
Debian for us. We need to do the Debian first thing with new packages
 like this, right?
Do you contact the person who owns the ITP of Viewnior ? Maybe he is still
working on it ?

How do I tell LP (and status.launchpad.net) that I am working on an
item, such as this one? Can I assign myself work items somehow?
You need to edit the blueprint, go the Work Items section, and put your name
(launchpad login) at the begin of the line.
See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WorkItemsHowto

On bugs, I seem to have come up with a usable fix for bug #889414 . A
change to the rc.xml in lubuntu-default-settings. Do I have commit
rights to the git or bzr tree for that, or should I propose a merge to a
branch, or just do it the traditional way and upload a debdiff?
Thanks, you can push the change directly to the LP branch, I'll check it and
upload it when I will find time to test it. There is probably more changes to
do, to upgrade configuration file to openbox 3.5 format :(

One more questions: the blueprint lubuntu-p-work-items says it is in
Status: not started, but the status.launchpad.net screens show it is
17% completed. That does not seem to match up :)
Done.

Julien Lavergne

[Lubuntu-desktop] Weekly meetings - Finding the right time

2011-11-13 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

One thing I would like to organize for this cycle, is a weekly meeting on IRC,
to discuss topics more easily and to take decisions when it's needed.
I think we have enough topics to start on a weekly base, but we can do it less
often in the future, if it's not necessary.

Finding a time for this is ... not very easy :) I don't want to do it during
the week-end, to be all able to have a week-end far from IT and Internet
connection :)

I also don't think we should change the time for every meetings, because it's
the best solution to forget the meeting. But, we can change it after some time
(like 3 months).

I propose to begin with this schedule : Wednesday, 7:00 PM UTC, starting on the
23th.

It'll not be necessary to attempt all the meetings. You can attempt when you
have subjects to discuss, but you can also adding a subject to the schedule, so
people can discuss it even if you can't be online at this time.

Let me know what you think about this.

Julien Lavergne

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Software Center News

2011-11-07 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

Good to have some news from you :)

I done some testing during the UDS, and the results are not bad :) But I
imagine porting it to Vala + Packagekit will be even better :) I assume
the port to PackageKit is necessary before the Vala one, because I don't
think aptdaemon is available in Vala. Please focus on this one before
breaking the application in the rewrite.
Don't hesitate to publish your work in a separate branch, so people can
test and help you if it's necessary.

I also have some suggestions :
 * Use check-language-support after installing a package, to check if
language package need to be installed. By launching it, it should
display the packages that need to be installed
 * Add a timeout when using the search box, like 0.5s before starting to
display the results. On my system, I just have the time to enter 1
letter, and the CPU is at 100 % because the search started. If I have
the time to enter more letters, my search will be more accurate, and the
CPU will be used only when I need it.
 * Display only 20 (?) results for each view, and add a button Display
all results. It should reduce the first search, and don't use the CPU
to display hundreds of results.

Let me know if you need more info, or bug reports.

Julien Lavergne

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] [12.04] Firefox instead of Chromium?

2011-11-05 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

I'm not very fan of a change unless we have a strong consensus for another
browser. But, this is my opinion :
- We should only consider Chromium or Firefox, because they have a strong
upstream and are well maintained. Browser is a very important part of a system,
and we really don't have time to do maintenance on it. Adopting Midori for
example, means we have to do the maintenance on Ubuntu (triage bugs, testing,
maybe some packaging ...).
- Benchmark are needed, because just saying it's light, doesn't mean it's
always light. Also, the memory usage for Chromium is special, because it shares
memory (there is an article from a dev of Chromium somewhere in the Web which
explain it).
- Finally, it needs to be light on old hardware. Remember, it's the main target
for Lubuntu. So far, Chromium seems better on this type of machine.

So far, I don't see advantages to switch to Firefox. Of course, if the
benchmarks show a real difference, I may reconsider my opinion.

I'm not sure if this was discussed on UDS, but in my opinion, this is worth

Firefox has reduced it's memory usage dramatically, and I'm currently
trying out Firefox 7 as a replacement.
I do not have detailed memory benchmarks (yet!), but I will definitely do
some benchmarks in the near future.
However, I'm pretty sure Firefox has better (lower) memory usage when
having several tabs open (more than 3).

 Other reasons to switch:
 GTK3
Better desktop integration (Chromium themeing is limited and hard to
 include as default)

 What do you guys think?

Note: This is for everyone so lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net :)

 Dear ALL,

First thing I've been told when I joined back in August is to learn how to
be patient so please, be patient :)

 Appearances could be deceiving ;)
One Stop Thread has started as 2 HOWTOs for Lubuntu, that's all. I then
figured out that Lubuntu Users need something a little bit beyond so there
came One Stop Thread. After my thread became sticky, that motivated me even
more to go beyond but I'm just waiting the right moment as I have huge
personal issues on real life that I must deal with it before anything else
but I'm actually ignoring and focusing on the best thing I love to do in
 life, that is Linux.

 What am I talking about?
One Stop Thread is just the first step towards something bigger and much
 more useful.
Last night, I made a banner using Photoshop (sorry, can't use GIMP at the
moment - I'm faster on Photoshop) and I made it for a purpose. If you will
have a look, you'll understand the whole point of having One Stop Thread
and the real primary purpose of it :)

 Check : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1844755
You'll see the banner at the very beginning :)

I'm trying to see the reactions of people and so far, they loved it. Then,
I'm going to improve it on daily basis. Then, I'm going even beyond that
 but again, please be patient.

However, I DO REALLY REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE all what you have mentioned
and I'll take that into consideration. One thing that you guys need to know
is, One Stop Thread is NOT meant to be a place where people start posting
about their problems and expect an answer. I know this is what is happening
right now but if you notice, these are general questions. Above all, I can
NOT ask people NOT to post over there because that is against the real
purpose of my thread. However, what I can do is to keep it simple and short
and organized as much as possible and I do have some plans for that but
 again, wait please :)

I found myself helpful more on the forum. This is what I've been doing for
a year even before joining Lubuntu Team so I'll carry on with that :)
I also founded very interesting to update the Wiki Area and keep it up to
date. However, the real question is: Do you guys want the Wiki Pages to be
our Primary Source of Information? be careful because that means the Wiki
Area will be much bigger than what it looks like now.
If you have a plan to make it as good as Arch Wiki (which has almost
everything about Arch) then I'm more than ready but ... I'm doing many
other things like Forum, Testing, etc etc and I don't want to lose my focus
on that. More people must be involved on the Wiki Pages IMHO.

For me, Forum is much easier to maintain and then I update the Wiki
 Pages accordingly.
Also, Traffic on Forum is much more.
Above all, I don't really feel comfortable when I browse our Wiki because I
feel there is something missing. I think the whole thing needs to be
reviewed and re-organized. IMHO of course.

Another thing is: www.lubuntu.net must be back to action again. I see NO
POINT of re-directing the page to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu

I have asked before if I can update it and I've been told that this access
can't be given to new people. Understood. But someone must take the
responsibility and focus on our website. As a user, I don't feel happy when
 the page re-direct to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu

You see I have tons of ideas but I'm not sure yet when to discuss all that?
I'm still doing that here on the mailing list but I guess we need some
 other place.

In the mean time, I prefer to focus on what I'm doing and not to do many
 things at one time.

I'm really glad to get all these replies from you, that means a lot to me,
 seriously :)
I promise that I'll do my best to provide the best to everyone in this
community and one thing you need to know about me is that when I go extra
miles, I really go EXTRA MILES so don't worry about me. However, I can't do
everything alone, I need more people to be involved. I do love team work.
That's why I made another thread: Lubuntu One Stop Group.

Everyone here is doing great job, no doubt about it but we need to be
little bit more organized and each one of us focus on one or two things,
not everything. That will increase our performance in no time. Again, just
 my humble personal opinion

What do you mean by old ? If it's around October 10, it's the last daily build
of Oneiric, so the most up-to-date you can have for 11.10. It's not possible to
have an official release for Oneiric, you can only try to use the last ISO.

For 12.04, you can test dailies later (it's not useful right now, it's too
early in the cycle). It's more important to test ISO before developement

However, there is a problem with this implementation : it will need to start

I also plan to implement it in lxsession, so it could be solution a bit faster,

LXKeymap 0.5 is now capable to store its keymap configuration into a

Therefore I wrote a little *.desktop file that I put in the global

trigger the autostart function of lxkeymap. The Keymap configuration
will be stored locally in your home directory ( ~/.config/lxkeymap.cfg)
and is easily editable either by using lxkeymap and set a new keymap or
 by editing it by hand.
You can get this version from here:

If you notice any bugs then report them here: http://launchpad.net/lxkeymap

Also I guess there is a bug in lxdm, because changing the keyboard
layout in the session and logging out to lxdm does not restore the
global keymap but uses the one choosen in the session.
This could be also fixed by simply calling lxkeymap -a from within
lxdm but as lxkeymap uses only a local configuration it would then
create and use the root accounts .config/lxkeymap.cfg file. So you need
to create this first by executing lxkeymap as root if you want to have a
different keymap globally+lxdm and your user accounts.

Be patient, they will arrive soon enough :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] Users experience improvements - Summary of the session

2011-11-01 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

This is a summary of the points we discussed during the session at UDS. It's a
list of points I planned to implement for the next cycle :

- Lightdm enable by default for Alpha 1
- Multi-screen configuration : not easy to configure with lxrandr. Solution :
Extend lxsession to accept configuration from other utility like arandr.
- Lxsession options / services : Add possibility to configure applications by
default, and to enable them or not (screensaver, power-management ...)
- lubuntu-software-center : Add by default, but keep synaptic.

I may have more time to do more items, but I can't guaranty it. You can find
the list of other possible items on the blueprint :
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/other-lubuntu-p-users-experience

If anyone have questions or concerns, please send a mail to the mailing. We
have another session this afternoon, so we can discuss those topics during it.

The plan is to close the discussions on main changes during the week of the
UDS, to start working earlier on those items.

Julien Lavergne

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] [Lubuntu 12.04] No LTS

 a version during 3 years ?
Well, we don't really have the choice. Currently, I can't guarantee than
we will have people to maintain Lubuntu during 3 years. 3 years, it's
long, and we have barely enough devs to maintain current releases.

Previous LTS releases were Ubuntu and Kubuntu, because they had enought
devs on Ubuntu side (Ubuntu Desktop team and Kubuntu Team) and enough on
upstream team (GNOME and KDE). There are also companies support which
make easier the long term support.

However, as 12.04 will be a LTS for Ubuntu, we will do our best to
maintain as much as we can this release, as long as we can, but I can't
ensure the 3 years support.

I hope I answer your question.

People don't know much about LXDE and Lubuntu. They think it's totally
different world that VLC on their Unity or XFCE won't work on LXDE so
they keep asking such questions. I've seen many questions like that.

I think we must promote for LXDE more. Lots of work must be done here
 if you ask me.
One step ahead IMHO is to improve our Wiki and Documentation system.
I'm trying to develop an approach I already have started with some
months ago but I need some time for that. I have my own vision of how
to promote for LXDE and Lubutnu.
You can share your ideas with the team, maybe people will be interested
to help :)
Personally, I started to communicate / advertise a bit more since the
11.10 release, and I hope to increase this during this cycle.

Another step ahead is having more members with groups, each group is
in charge of ONE TASK. Having that said, members will stay focus and
 their productivity will be higher.
Why not making a Marketing Team, and organize yourself the different
tasks ? This is part of my thought regarding the organization of the

i guess the real question is whether or not this is a bug. if we intend CLI

we should at least add it to the wiki and/or FAQ.

See previous email of PCMan about it :

No, it's not a bug and smbfs is not needed, either.
GVFS, if properly installed with proper backends, should support smb.
If you can use gvfs-ls or gvfs-* commands to handle smb:// paths, then it's a
bug of pcmanfm.
Otherwise, gvfs or other stuff is not correctly configured under lubuntu.

Could you please do the tests with gvfs and report back ?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Roadmap for 12.04

2011-10-18 Thread Julien Lavergne
Le 10/18/2011 05:22 PM, Rob Peters a écrit :
 1. Gnome 2 and xubuntu allow a user to create a launcher anywhere on
the desktop without having to build a .desktop file. Gnome 3 dropped
this feature and its a pain. Now, if your going to attract windows
users most everyone's desktop I see is littered with folders and icons.
So, my desire would be to adopt the xubuntu solution that allows for a
right-click on the desk to open a launcher constructor.
I added an item about this. There is a patch to implement it, we will
probably have time to look at it.

 2. Searching for files and file content is a big issue for lots of
windows users. I needed to install the gnome-search-tool to do this.
 An easier solution?
Someone proposed catfish, but it seems to be now not maintained. Unless
pcmanfm gain support for searching soon, we will have to add an utility
for this.

I know that themes are a very subjective area. For me personally, I
thought the 11.04 default theme was a big winner. The blue panel with
white text was sharp (IMO) along with the box headers. I am not so
impressed with the standards 11.10 theme. So, when you change the
theme form one release to the other can you include the prior theme
for people who don't like the new one.
Already in our TODO list :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] Roadmap for Lubuntu 12.04

2011-10-17 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

We just released 11.10, but it also means that 12.04 development
started. It will be the first development cycle after adoption of
Lubuntu in Ubuntu family, which come with some consequences.

Firstly, we will have the same schedule than Ubuntu :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PreciseReleaseSchedule.

Secondly, we can use UDS to discuss plans for 12.04, new features etc
... I would like to use this summit to decide our roadmap for the 12.04,
and take decisions we usually took later in the cycle, like new
applications by default, new features planned etc ... But, I still want
to discuss the differents topics on the mailing before the UDS, to have
input from everyones. For the record, UDS starts the 31 October, and
finishes the 5 November.

Personally, I have 3 topics in mind, and I started to write some notes
about them on a wiki page :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Developers/P-Plan

1. Optimizations :
 * Remove unnecessary depends (gconf, glade, other gnome old library ?)
 * Evaluate a first move to GTK3 (because there will be less maintenance
/ optimization on GTK2 now)
 * Optimize the theme

2. User experience :
 * Add missing features easy to implement and which make our users happy :)
 * Provide new shiny stuff (lubuntu-software-center, catfish ...)
 * Fix issues which are here since too much time (keymap switch,
screensaver ...)

3. Team Organisation :
 * Find a way to organize and coordinate our work
 * Find a way to welcome new members / contributors

Also, an important detail is that Ubuntu 12.04 will be an LTS version,
but Lubuntu will NOT be an LTS. The main reason is because LTS needs
support, update and security fixes for 3 years, which is not possible
for Lubuntu team (too much work). However, it should not stop us to make
12.04 the better release Lubuntu ever :)

If you have any other topics to mention, please speak now :) It's the
perfect moment for asking and discussion. But please, open a new topic
on the mailing list, with [12.04] in the title, so it will be easier to
follow the discussions.

Regards,
Julien Lavergne

Usually behaviour after a release or big announcement. We are currently
#5, and I think our best rank is #3 :)
Still, it's not something to take too seriously ... but still nice :p

Because the author of notification-daemon drop the support for

The results above are the product of this:
 - start the livecd with nomodeset checked
 - typing startx in the line commands (X doesn't load :( )

Should I create a bug in X? graphic drivers? where...?
Oups sorry, I didn't remember you already did that :/

Well, it seems that modesetting is not supported for this card, but ISO
can't run without modestting :(
You could report a bug against xserver-xorg-video-ati package, there is
clearly something wrong with this situation.

Second, the performance has taken a significant hit. IMO, 11.10 boots
slower, and seems to lag on any screen click. Takes longer to launch
applications, etc. Thinking it was an upgrade issue I did a clean
install and experienced the same behavior. Also, as a minor point and
I know this is really subjective and can be changed, but 11.04 had a
better color for its default theme, blue top with white letters. It
 was really classy.
Boot is a problem for all Ubuntu releases, and work will be done in
12.04 to improve the situation.
For the lag, are you using xcompmgr for your tests ? Do you test without
it ? Maybe it's a driver regression using xcompmgr (and so compositing).

Oh, i forgot to say i'm using the 64bit version.
Hum, it seems that the graphical card have a problem with modesetting
(good catch Lance :)).
But at least you should be able to start with sudo start lxdm. Any
errors when running this command ?
Or could you try startx to see if the session start ?

[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu 11.10 released

2011-10-13 Thread Julien Lavergne
Lubuntu 11.10 is now available :

 * http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/11.10/release/

== What is Lubuntu ? ==

Lubuntu 11.10 is a brand new flavor of Ubuntu based on the Lightweight
X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE), as its default GUI. The goal is to
provide a very lightweight distribution, with all the advantages of the
Ubuntu world (repositories, support, etc.). Lubuntu is targeted at
normal PC and laptop users running on low-spec hardware. Such users
may not know how to use command line tools, and in most cases they just
don't have enough resources for all the bells and whistles of the
full-featured mainstream distributions.

With many LXDE components, Lubuntu also uses well-known applications,
such as Chromium, Openbox, Pidgin, to name a few. The Lubuntu project
wiki contains more information on the project and the applications used
available.

== Features ==

 * Based on the lightweight LXDE desktop environment.
 * Pcmanfm 0.9.9, a fast and lightweight files manager using gio/gvfs.
 * Lxdm, a lightweight GTK display manager.
 * Chromium, the open-source version of Google Chrome.
 * ... and, of course, based on Ubuntu 11.10.

See the complete list of applications on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Applications

== Improvements since Lubuntu 11.04 ==
 * ISOs are now build with Ubuntu official build system.
 * Alternate ISOs are available.
 * Many updates from LXDE (most components had official releases).
 * Build with recommended packages by default.
 * Use recommends instead of depends for most of components of
lubuntu-desktop meta-package.
 * Register correctly LXDE as a desktop environment by xdg tools.
 * Switch to xfce4-power-manager for power management.
 * Add a microblog client : pidgin-microblog.
 * New theme made by Rafael Laguna.

== Releases notes and known issues ==
The release notes, with a list of known problems are available on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReleaseNotes/OneiricOcelot

== Reporting bugs ==
You can find information on how to report bug on this wiki page :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReportingBugs

== Thanks ==

I would like to thanks all people involved in the development of Lubuntu
during this past 6 months : LXDE developers, people helping on IRC,
testing ISOs, reporting bugs, making documentation and artwork ...
It was a pleasure to work with all of you.

You mean the ISO doesn't boot, or the system installed doesn't boot ? Do
you try to install with an alternate ISO ?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Idea for LSC

I was wondering if something like this
 (http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=56282) could be
 implemented on LSC.
The main goal of it is to be able to control from one place the
default apps of the system to open the files.

Something similar exists in pcmanfm, but it must be done extension by
extension. The proposal, is that it can be done in just one place.

 What do you think?
I like the idea, but LSC is probably not the better place to implement
this. A separate program is probably the best, merging also the
functionalities from the pcmanfm one.

I started to work on something related to this idea. We will have time
to discuss this, let's rest on this release day before talking about
next version :)

 report there?
Please use the iso tracker, especially to link bugs from launchpad to
ISO, so we can see easily which bugs affect Lubuntu.

And another question. I'm using 07102011 build so shall I download and
install today build? my internet is not that fast and if I managed to
download it today, probably I'll install tomorrow so it's a new day
 anyway.
There is a 20111011 ISO available, please use this one. I hope it will
be the last ISO before the release. You should always test the last ISO
available, because you may report bugs that are already fixed.

@all please do try click off the tests, we REALLY need them.
Thanks Phill,

PPC testing is not stricly needed, official release will only include
i386 and amd64. But if people are interested to test, any feedback about
it is welcome.
If we have people to test PPC during the next cycle, we can think about
adding PPC to official arches.
