Try renaming the label to tab:Electoral-Roll-Extract,i.e. replace the
spaces with dashes. Does it work that way? I think that labels do not
accept spaces or special characters. If this is the case, you have found a
problem as the dialog should warn that the label is invalid.

I don't use the Tufte Book class, but for the fonts, you have ETbb, by
Michael Sharpe, an OpenType reinterpretation and expansion of the original
Edward Tufte’s ET-Bembo family

Under Document → Settings → Fonts check "Use non-TeX fonts (via
XeTeX/LuaTeX)." By default LyX will use XeTeX, but you can pick another
font engine under Output.

When you change anything in Document → Settings, at the bottom of the
window there is a button called "Set as defaults" (or something like that,
ATM I have the Spanish UI). If, after changing any setting, you click on
that button, all new documents will use that setting as default.

In PDF output, it does, but on LyX's UI it shows (I think) U+22ac: ⊬

LyX 2.4 dev build on openSUSE Leap 15.4 with Libertinus Serif as UI font.

You need to define a new local layout (Documents → Settings → Local
layout). The following example uses the photo package, but you can adapt it
to your needs. Once set, you'll have the a new inset under Insert → Float.

Don't worry, it's not your fault ;)

You need to change the spacing between the numbering and the heading
itself. You can do that by writing something like this in the preamble

\makeatletter
\renewcommand\l@chapter{
\@dottedtocline{2}{1.5em}{3em}}
\renewcommand\l@section{
\@dottedtocline{2}{1.5em}{3em}}
\makeatother

That will change the spacing for chapters and sections, just play a bit
with the numbers (most of the time you'll only need to change the 3em).

Not a direct answer to your problem,(1) but why do you want to use fix-cm
package? AFAIK this package is used only to fix limitations with the old
Computer Modern fonts (hence the -cm in the name). But if that's the case
you'll be better switching to Latin Modern which is better than the old CM
fonts. You can even move to [Xe|Lua]LaTeX and use an OpenType conversion
such as NewComputerModern.

(1) I think there is a command to force code to go at the beginning of the
preamble, but I cannot remember it right now. Maybe someone here have
better memory than me? ;)

In the lower part of the document settings window there is a "Save as
default" button. Any change you made to the Document → Settings will be set
as default for any new document.

In fact, the Font block on the local layout only affect the editing area.
If you want to change the actual heading formatting you need to use the
titlesec package. For example, to set the section heading to use the sans
font defined in the document (\sffamily), in bold and with its size set as
\Large, assigning to it a custom color (I don't like pink), write in the
document preamble,

\usepackage{xcolor}
\definecolor{Gren}{rgb}{.3,.7,.3}

To change the text color, just select the whole equation and Right
click → Text properties → Customize.

To change the background, you can either follow section 9 of the Math
editor manual you find under Help, or for a quick trick insert your

LyX follows LaTeX to do the numbering, and that means you need to use
either modules, local formatting or code in the preamble (the "caption"
package) to modify the numbering beyond the standard formatting. Under
Document → Settings → Modules it's possible to activate modules that
restart the numbering for figures and tables on each sections. For more,
you need to tell us what you need (roman numerals?, small caps for the
labels?, etc.).

That depends on what you need. It's quite easy to rotate table cell content
in an arbitrary angle: just go to the table properties. So, if you need to
rotate just short texts, use a table of one cell and no borders. If you
need something else, please describe what you need in more detail.

As pointed out in this thread, *in principle* you can use both without
trouble... except when you can't. It's a know "issue" (it can be "fixed"
with extra preamble code) that several OpenType features that should be on
by default, such as italic correction in equations and (if I remember
right) contextual ligatures on normal text, are disabled on LuaTeX, but
work without problems in XeTeX.

If you're a Lua geek, then you'll get a powerful tool to implement your own
macros, but most people are not Lua geeks, so, it's worth it? As always, it
depends: LuaTeX offers more options for microtype than XeTeX and it's
implementing support for variable fonts, but in my experience, when you
want to go a step further with OpenType XeTeX is more reliable than LuaTeX.

But as it's often said, your mileage may vary :)

Slowly when editing the document or when compiling it? When you insert a
graphic, in the LaTeX options tab it's possible to uncheck the "show in
LyX" option, this will make everything faster (I think)

OK, I finally solved the whole thing by manually defining font size ranges,
so I don't have to mess with defining the font for the footnotes.

Trouble changing font family for footnotes

Hi, LyXiers!

Here's the situation. I'm using the standard Book documentclass with XeTeX
as engine. I'm also starting to use Octavio Pardo's version of EB Garamond

Good thing about this version is that it offers bold, among other things.
Bad thing is that it do not offer optical sizes. But I noticed that the
medium weight is a good replacement for the old EB Garamond 08 so I tried
to change the font used by footnotes with

\newfontfamily{\ebgm}[RawFeature={+ss06}]{EBGaramond-Medium}

\usepackage{footmisc}

\renewcommand*{\footnotelayout}{\footnotesize\ebgm}


which works perfectly well in isolation. Problem is, I'm also trying to set
the footnote mark to not be displayed on superscript with

\makeatletter

\renewcommand\@makefntext[1]{%

\noindent\makebox[0pt][r]{\ebgm\@thefnmark.\space}#1}

\makeatother


which also works well in isolation, setting the mark within the margin,
with the desired font, and "at ground level" as I like. Problem is, I

no matter in which order I write them, the first one gets ignored.


Attached there is a minimal example file (it's in Article documentclass,
but the problem is the same). Notice that you need the right font installed!


Any idea? I'm on openSUSE Leap 15.3 with texlive 2017.

It's still there, but only when the cursor is on a heading environment. Put
your cursor on the same paragraph of a title and you'll see the entry under
the Insert menu (the shortcut is Alt-A, then 1).

Yes, the "Save as document default" button does exactly that: everything
you choose in the menu becomes the default for new documents.

As Scott pointed out, right now it's not possible on a direct way, but you
can use LibreOffice's own tools to "tag" text in italic and then use the
"paste as LaTeX" option on LyX. It goes like this:

- On Writer, make a copy of the document (don't work on the original!)
- Open the search and replace tool (Ctrl-H)
- On the Search box, write the following, complete with parenthesis: (.*)
- With the cursor still on the search box, enable "Regular Expressions"
and, under Format, select Italics (you'll see the word Italic bellow the
search box)
- On the Replace box, write \emph{$1}
- Replace

You'll see that all the italic text will be surrounded with the \emph{·}
tag. Now, you can copy the text to the clipboard and go to LyX → Edit →
Paste Special → Paste as LaTeX.

Of course, for short texts it's not worth doing all that, but for longer
texts, it works pretty well.

While there are metafont versions out there, all TexGyre fonts are
distributed as opentype fonts. In the font settings dialogs, select to use
non-TeX fonts and then you'll see it.

Sorry, my fault. You're right, toc is for the table of contents. For the
list of figures you need to use lof and for the list of tables lot

The LyX file is full of notes directed at myself, so a lot of "sanitation"
is needed before sharing it, sorry. Anyway, appendixes B, C and D provide
the full LaTeX preamble, local layout and other formatting used in the
file, so everything is there :) Maybe, after 2.4 is released I'll made a
template from the book to share it.

Re: Layout

Layouts are controlled by a "documentclass". Under Document → Settings →
Documentclass it's possible to select any of the documentclasses installed
in your system. There are several "book" documentclasses, the simplest one
being "Standard" and the more powerfull KOMA-Script. All documentclasses
can be modified through code, so which documentclass is the best for you
depends on your needs. For a simple paperback format, probably Standard
will be the right choice.

Error in the release notes for 2.3.6?

I noticed that the text in the release announcement for 2.3.6 here

and in the news page got mixed with the 2.3.5 release (it talks about
support for inkscape 1.0, for example, or in the news page it talks about
the "fifth maintenance release") and it's indeed different from the text in
the announcement email, which it seems to me is the right text.

Ticket #5636 toolbar icons with dark theme

Hello, LyX community!

I'm using a dark theme in my Plasma desktop, and found myself in the
problem reported in Ticket #5636

In short: all icons in the math editor toolbars are dark in dark and
therefore it's really difficult to use them. I know the ticket is quite old
and that there is no solution yet, but anyone have any workaround for it? I
mean, other than switching desktop theme, of course ;)

Not the original poster, but this is something I can also see in my system
since a number of versions: during document editing, emphasized text is not
shown with the italic font chosen (in my case, Libertinus Serif), but with
a fake slanted font build from the roman typeface. This only affects the
editor, the PDF output works as intended.

With the cursor close to the integral sign, press Alt-M, then L. That will
apply the \limits command, but without showing it in plain code.

You can use Babel for this. For example, if your document is in English, go
to the preamble and write something like this

For other languages you just need to change every "english" string for the
needed language. For example, in Spanish

\usepackage[spanish]{babel}

OK, if don't like that part of the discussion, what about the second part
of what I've said? Think of a chemists writing about one of those
substances with kilometric names: a substitution table that changes a few,
carefully chosen characters into the full name could be useful. If then
someone wants to use that feature to also correct typos, it's their choice.
And yes, that can be done with a search & replace, but a substitution table
is something you do only once.

And please, calm down, nobody is mad at you, there is no need for you to be
mad at anyone else that disagree with you.

Not necessarily. There are several forms of mild dyslexia in which the
person swaps letters or even "fingers" (typing an "o" instead of an "a,"
for example). I know this from experience because I have the problem. And
yes, working hard and being attentive solves many (not all, mind you) of
the "accidents," but still... I've been writing in computers almost every
day for the last 30 years and still have many silly "typos:" in my case
it's not a matter of practice.

And that's just a first point. An autocorrect tool can also be useful for
people without those problems: As a matter of fact, LyX actually perform an
autocorrect every time it changes two dashes into an en-dash and three into
an em-dash. Maybe this feature could be generalized. Think of changing the
first character of a phrase into caps, for example, or setting a
substitution pattern to change a couple of characters into a symbol or a
longer text you need to insert several times in the document. It doesn't
need to be something fixed (in fact, it shouldn't!), just a table that any
user can fill at will: first column, what you want to substitute, second
column, the substitution, and then the system perform those changes in real
time. LibreOffice has such tool and yes, most of the elements in their
default table are just a list of stupid emojis, but that does not mean the
feature is stupid.

Another option is to use "short titles:" put the footnote in the normal
title and then add a sort title (Insert → Short Title, or Alt-A, then 1).
The short title without the footnote will be carried to the TOC and the
header marks.

When you insert something from menu, look at LyX's status bar: there you'll
see a command (argument-insert item:1). With that code you can now create a

Thanks for your comments, Neal! I used to do that too, but I'm prone to

Just a general warning: the wrapfig package used by this option is a bit
"unpredictable" with its default options: if the wrapfig figure ends up
near the lower edge of the page, it could disappear from the output without
warning, leaving a "??" for each cross-reference to it and a gap on the
following page. Consider a right click on the inset → Settings → Allow
floating to solve that problem... causing, perhaps, others when there is
not enough text to wrap the wrapfig figure...

Just double check the output each time you use a wrapfig float ;)

It's possible by using XeTeX, a good font, and a bit of code in the
preamble. But be aware you'll need to find an OpenType font with ALL the
symbols you need, otherwise you'll be dealing with a lot of compilation
errors!

After setting your document to use XeTeX and choosing an appropriate font,
in the Preamble write something like this

\newcommand{\Name}{\symbol{"}}


where  is the corresponding Unicode hex code. Now, on your document
open a TeX box (Ctrl-L) and type \Name in it. That's all.

Will that font be used for the whole document or just for particular
paragraphs? If you are willing to use XeTeX instead of plain LaTeX, setting
up a new font-family that uses an Unicode Blackletter typeface such as
UniFraktur(1) is really easy.

Unfortunately, no. I'm able to provide a fast answer to some problems only
because I've already asked that question many times in the past and was

I'm using LyX since... 2001? My memory fails. But even with such experience
it took me months to understand how local formats work. In fact, I'm not
able to write code from scratch, I always need to copy/paste from my
archive of solutions, so don't feel amazed for our fast answers, they only
mean that we are good at copy/paste old solutions from our own long list of
solved problems ;)

Even the most wild questions I've ever had were already asked by someone
else on the Internet, so it's only matter of using the right keywords on
the right place. TeX-LaTeX Stack Exchange is usually the right place so
once I find the answer, and of course I understand it (which is not always
granted), it's just a matter of adapting the whole thing to LyX (which may
be some work)

Now, under Insert → Float you'll have "Figure (side caption)" and "Table
(side caption)". The side-captioned figures will integrate with the normal
ones, so just use the normal index of figures to list them (and all the
others).

You can delete the caption box inside the float without problems, resulting
on a floating figure without caption. To insert several figures inside a
float you can just do that, or even insert another float inside the float
to get several "sub-figures", LyX will recognize the situation
automatically.

p7zip is a command line utility and Ark, the KDE archiver, can use it if

Keep in mind that I'm translating from Spanish and that I'm using a Linux

On Tools → Settings → Edition → Keyboard shortcuts type "ipa" on the filter
box and you'll find the ipa-insert command listed below: select it and
click on Modify to assign a keyboard shortcut to it.

Linux Libertine and Biolinum) with XeTeX

 The only way I ever found is to define a new "footnote" command and use it
on the heading instead of the normal one. See here:

Basically you add to the Preamble

\makeatletter

\def\myfnt{\ifx\protect\@typeset@protect
\expandafter\footnote\else\expandafter\@gobble\fi}

\makeatother


and then to insert the "footnote" on the heading you use a TeX box (Ctrl-L)
with the command


\myfnt{the heading footnote}


on it. The numbering integrates without problems with normal footnotes,
only on LyX it will look kind of weird. But you can always define a
character style ;)

Each time you perform any action that do not have an associated keyboard
shortcut, on LyX's buffer you'll see a command that can be used to set up
one. In the case of "times" operator (in Math mode) the code is

math-insert \times

With this code, go to Tools → Preferences → Edition → Keyboard shortcuts
where you'll be able to create a new keyboard shortcut: just click on New,
type the code on the Function box, click on the keyboard shortcut button
and perform your preferred shortcut. If by accident you select a shortcut
already in use, LyX will warn you: just pick another one.

But remember that on Math mode you just need to type \times and press the
space bar to get the symbol, so maybe you'll not gain that much by setting
a shortcut for such a short instruction :)

Try enabling Hyperref package. On Document → Settings → PDF Properties
enable "Use Hyperref Support" → on "Hyperlinks" tab select "Break links
over lines".

Yes. The "Fancy" option indeed adds that line to the preamble. You can
check what's on the "hidden" preamble by opening the "code pane" (View →
Code Preview Pane) and select the "Only Preamble" option.

Technically speaking, that's not wrong (at least, not completely): it's
possible to have a book without "parts", but if you try to write
subsections without sections you'll have problems. "Parts" are optional and
in fact they have "level -1" assigned (chapters are "level 0").

But yes, the table you indicate could be better. Maybe something similar to
the table in

but adapted to LyX would be clearer.

It's possible to create cropped PDF files and then convert them to SVG with
external utilities like pdf2svg (it's available on Linux, not sure about
other OSs).

If you go to File → New from template you'll find the PDF-cropped.lyx
template: use it to create your expression and then save the resulting PDF.
Then you can use pdf2svg the following way

pdf2svg input.pdf output.svg

to get the SVG file.

Seriously, and forgive me for the off-topic here, but it seems that on this
thread is slowly surfacing one of the worst sins of open source
communities: the attitude of "it's easy for me, then it must be easy for
you too, you lazy looser".

Well, usually it's not easy. And people is neither lazy nor lousy nor
anything. For most people on the world computers are just boxes they use to
complete a task they don't even want to do. There is nothing they should be
ashamed of if they don't care about the "superiority of X approach compared
to the evil Y", specially if X requires a long learning process.

You cannot tell a normal person "if you want to write in collaboration,
just use git". You cannot say to anyone, not even to me, someone that's
been using Linux as his main system for the last two decades, to "use
make". That attitude is not only wrong, it is one of the main reasons why
we are still a minority on the consumer market. If your answers are
targeted to computer wise persons, only computer wise person will listen to
you.

As I said, I started to use F(L)OSS almost two decades ago. I'm using LyX
since before it switched to Qt. Back then I compiled every new version by
myself. But even with my experience I would have loved to have an
"everything within the file" file format when, twelve years ago, I was
writing my PhD thesis on LyX: at the time I did not had an internet
connection at home so syncing all the files was a real PITA. Even now, in a
time with automated backup utilities, usb drives and cloud storage I found
the lack of an easy way to work on a "project" instead of "fiddling with
several folders, each with dozens if not hundreds of files" quite
cumbersome.

And another thing: the fact that MS implemented some idea does not means
the idea is bad, saying so it's silly. A lot of F(L)OSS projects use "all
within the file" file formats: ODF, and open source ISO standard, it's just
a bunch of xml files and folders comfortably packed on a zip file. Also,
can you even imagine what would be to work on krita or gimp if those
projects just save all layers and masks on different files?

Please, people, think a bit on real users, not just on yourselves.

A dirty trick that works: open the source code panel, copy the code on the
inset from there but without picking the $ or \[ or \begin{equation} and
paste again on the document. Then you can erase the original inset.

I'd never used it so I cannot tell precisely how (or if) it works and how
it interact with the appendixes, but I think the LaTeX package endfloat can
be used to send all floats to the end of the document on a section of their
own:
