keypresses. But I can't see that that's very likely here.

 Do other alt-p options work?

Yes, I tried to guess what would open a chapter and found out that
alt+P[c] = lyx code...

I think if the paragraph layout selection combo isn't displayed, then the
shortcut Alt-p+space won't work. It's displayed or not?

I'm not quite sure what the paragraph layout selection combo is,
but if you mean that long list of possible keystrokes that display on
the status line when I first press alt+P then yes...

FWIW, I stuck with kde 3.5.x for a long time, but am pretty happy with kde
4.2.x and expect to be a lot happier with kede 4.3.x. There are differences
but most of what you're accustomed to can be done now.

I will admit that I found kde 4.2 less difficult to deal with than 4.1...
However a few things that kde 4x crammed down my throat so offended me
that had I not found a window manager that I suits me, I was actually
considering going back to winblows over it. (And I've been bashing
them since ver 3.x)

Example: as a keyboard user who has always needed to make many
changes to the global (and application) keybindings to
a)eliminate the 75% that I never want to fat finger by mistake.
b)assign bindings that my fingers can remember to the few I do use.
And given that I have difficulty using the rodent, I found
that altering the gui key assignment routine for KEYBOARD
shortcuts in such a way that it was no longer practical to do
this without clicking on things REALLY bugged me...

Then I discovered Enlightenment, and now not even a permanent
reinstatement of kde 3.5's user interface would tempt me back.
I still install kde versions of linux because I'm accustomed to
certain kde applications, and because few (if any) linux distro have
enlightenment version installation dvd.

Note, I was not happy with the gui tool to assign shortcuts in e17
either, and would still be using e16 (where the global shortcuts are
actually in a vim editable config...) as my preferred WM in spite of
e17's enhancements except that some nice person informed me of an
e17 utility (enlightenment_remote) and gave me a copy of a bash script
(e17_setup.sh) which uses enlightenment_remote to automatically save
and restore many e17 configurations to/from a vim editable re-config
script...

From what I can tell, this is true only if the standard toolbar has
been visible in the relevant window at some time in the past -- at
least on Mac. If as I do (and Joe apparently does) you set your ui
file not to load the standard toolbar, then Alt-Pspace does nothing.
But once you make the toolbar visible and then invisible, Alt-Pspace
does its magic.

Well Vincent, I'm glad to hear that it's supposed to work like that.
But it doesn't work that way for me...

I'm using LyX 1.6.3 as emerged for Sabayon Linux 4.2 (the kde/x86-64
version)... When I edited /usr/share/lyx/ui/classic.ui to say:
standard off,top
and restarted LyX, I tried the alt+P[space] shortcut.

When I first pressed alt+P the status line at the bottom of the LyX
window displayed a long list of options. When I completed the shortcut
by tapping the spacebar the status line briefly indicated that I had
pressed the spacebar, but the dropdownbox did NOT magically appear.

Perhaps this automagic behavior is dependent on the windowmanager?

I installed the kde version of Sabayon rather than the gnome version
because I'm used to having all the kde tools available to me and I
never liked gnome's interface. HOWEVER kde4 caused me to run screaming
into the arms of enlightenment. And I'm currently using e17 for my
window manager rather than putting up with kde4. Perhaps that could
have something to do with the dropdownbox failing to automagicly appear?

You can turn off all the toolbars if you like. I did not know that you
could loose keybindings that way, but define the keybindings in a custom
key binding file instead. That way, you can have the same keybindings
without any toolbars. (And you can define other keybindings you find
 useful also.)

First let me clarify... I don't think I actually lose the keybinding
itself. But this particular binding. Nor in fact do I truly know
what to call the function it invokes. But several versions of LyX ago
I discovers that using the default (cua) bind file the sequence of
holding the alt key and pressing p, then pressing the spacebar results
in the same effect that i would get if I spent (more than 30 seconds
on a bad day) trying to get the #R$^$#*^$ing mouse pointer lined
up so I could click on the arrow in that scrollbox normally located
at the extreme lefthand end of the standard toolbar...

IE to insert a new chapter I hit [enter]alt+p[space] then arrow-key
down until chapter is highlighted, press [enter] and start typing a
chapter heading...

But if I close the otherwise useless standard toolbar, the scrollbox
isn't on the screen, thus it doesn't open so that I can select
chapter,(or other {is it called section type?} choice from list...)
Thus the viability of the shortcut sequence I described requires that
the standard toolbar be turned on...

I'm sure that I could set the new line to chapter with one of the other
arguments to alt+p if I bothered to look it up and memories it.
But I can only remember just so many shortcut sequences, And this one
gets me a list of many selectable choices.

To get rid of the document tabs too, open all your files in
 separate windows. (ALT+f w, or File-New Window)
Then, use your window manager to switch
between them. This is usually performed by alt+tab, although some
keyboard centric window managers might do it differently.

Yeah, As I said in a different reply, Because of the fact that I
usually open a half dozen .LyX files (with long filenames) using the
window manager to switch between them is not a good choice. Where as
my script always lists the filename arguments to LyX in the same order
So I know that alt+D[2] will always switch to the main story
document and alt+D[5] will always switch to my descriptive list of
characters... Unless I happen to be working on those same .LyX files
from one of my other linux distributions which still have older
versions of LyX which means same result would happen by typing
alt+V[2] alt+V[5] instead.

Of course, since I insist on being able to work on this story even if
I happen to have booted another linux version, my shell script on this
one also has to automatically invoke: lyx2lyx -t 276 on them when I'm done...

But in any case, I thank you for the kind hearted help. I for one think
this list is lucky to have you... correction: *_very_* lucky ;-)

viability of the 3-key,2-stroke keybinding alt+p[space]. Thus
I put up with wasting a whole line of screen space on mostly useless
stuff I would never ever click on.

Likewise, If I want to switch to another open document with lyx 1.6.3
I'd use alt+D[2] to switch to the second open document, via the
pull down menu. Though I'll admit my fingers usually start with the old
alt+v[2] that isn't in the view menu anymore before I realise
that the functionality was moved to the Documents pull-down menu.

BUT I would never ever wrestle with my mouse to get that (expletive
deleted) pointer on the name of the document displayed with an [x]
just under the toolbars... And that would be so, even if I wasn't just
as likely to accidentally click on one of the [x]s...

Is there any way to get them off my screen???

Thanks. But when I tried that the results were less than ideal.

I don't know why I didn't realize I was talking about tabs until
you identified the toggle. {Unless it has to do with the fact that
when I use LyX I'm always either opening just one document (in which
case there isn't one) Or I'm opening a half dozen documents with a
script where the average filename length is about 30 characters long.
(in which case the row of tabs don't all fit} and so I never discerned
the pattern of a tab beside a spot without one...}

But in any case the results are that several separate LyX windows open.
which in itself isn't bad, but since the filenames are so long it's
hard to determine which doc is which switching via the alt+tab
global shortcut. And if I try to use the alt+D[$number] method,
the tabs in that particular document window turn themselves back on...

It might be nice for keyboard centric users who switch documents via
the menu, rather than by clicking on the tab, if they added an
additional check box or .ui file item, that toggled the graphic display
of the tabs like it was a toolbar full of tabs, while still allowing
ONE document window to switch between several [virtual tab]
documents via the pull down menu... But as feature requests go, I
doubt this would ever be considered a high priority...

So I'm thinking that I'll just have to live with the durned tabs.

Thanks anyway!

Lyx 1.6.3 Can I ditch the pointNclick list of open files below the toolbars???

2009-07-31 Thread Joe(theWordy)Philbrook

I'm using lyx 1.6.3 on Sabayon Linux 4.2. Which is fairly impressive BTW.
I like most of the user interface. Well that is except that As a
keyboard-centric user with very poor mouse coordination I always resent
screen space taken up by point n' click specific tools such as most
toolbars. For example if alt+p[space] worked without that
scrollbox attached to the standard toolbar the .ui file would say

= Toolbars
= standard off,top
= extra off,top
= table off,bottom
= math off,bottom
= minibuffer off,bottom
= End

As it is the only one I leave on is standard. And that to keep the
