Looking for feedback on a possible workaround for the horrible 1 row added message.

2014-10-21 Thread Michael Marshall
hey all,
as anyone who uses VO on the mac will know not many things are as annoying as
the 1 row added message.
My idea is crude and not ideal but it is the only thing I can think of.
If I was to make a new definition in voice-over dictionary i could put the 1
row added and tell VO to say nothing.
like i said, it is not ideal but when using a program such as night owl I am at
my wits end with this godforsaken message.
Obviously apple in their own twisted logic believe that this message has some
sort of value and logically it does. I just wish we had more choice over what
was said, even a ding or chime sound would be a lot more bearable.
Let me know what you think.
i have to do something.

thanks

Michael

Chime or some outher sound would be preferable. However, I cannot recall
just now but when I started using the Mac, I did ask about an alternative to
some speech info and all I can recall is David Griffiths telling me where I
could insert a sound instead. If only I could recall what this was for but
maybe David can help out. I must check my notes.

Ah yes Michael, I found my notes, it referred to a mis spelt word where one
could alter this info to a sound which is less intrusive so your suggestion
surely must be a possability regarding the one row added. This change would
also be helpful in terms of e-mails when we get the same information when we
receive new e-mails.

2014-10-21 Thread Dane Trethowan
Wonder if the terrible bug with the Phone keypad has been fixed? For those who
haven’t stumbled across it - I’m sure many of you have - when typing numbers on
the keypad sometimes the key would act as though you were holding it down even
though you’d released your finger, you’d hear a continuous tone according to
what key you pressed, this only seemed to happen when I was using my Bluetooth
hands free or Headset etc.

Logging Into Terminal As root

2014-10-21 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi all

I found this by pure accident. If you ever want to log into Terminal as root,
all you have to do is this:
1. Open up /Applications/Utilities/terminal.app
2. At the log-in prompt, type the following, (without the quotes):
sudo bash”

There you go, you’re off and running as “root”. But be careful what you do
there. ;-)

Yes iOS 8.1 is miles ahead of 8.0.2 or even 8.0. There are still bugs
but most of the major ones are fixed such as the tones being stuck and
possibly VoiceOver being disabled when turning on status cells in
Braille settings although I don't have any confirmation on this. There
are some pretty cool new features as well. But I think it's safe to say
the upgrade is well worth it compared to 8.0x.

Re: Adding The Date Added Column to The Songs Table In iTunes

2014-10-21 Thread Colin Matthews
HiDane or anyone else interested!
Ok having a play around myself because I also sort with other fields!
I noticed under Command+j those options to add fields like date added are no
longer there!
But when going through different buttons and just going through their options I
found that the button next to the scroll area which depending on what you’ve
set might say Songs or Albums or something!
But pressing on it you get sort options a main table to select Albums or Songs
and so on!
Selecting songs then next along are 2 buttons the second of which has a lot of
options including personal submenu and stats submenu!
And in that stats option is to sort by Date added!
And on another note if someone has noticed in Album view scroll area they have
a recently added table then a bit further over the Album grid and do not want
it!
Back under that sort button if you select Albums then after the 2 options to
sort Artist or albums there is a show recently added check box and then options
for how long ago those items have been there like 6months!

 hey all,
as anyone who uses VO on the mac will know not many things are as annoying
as the 1 row added message.
My idea is crude and not ideal but it is the only thing I can think of.
If I was to make a new definition in voice-over dictionary i could put the 1
row added and tell VO to say nothing.
like i said, it is not ideal but when using a program such as night owl I am
at my wits end with this godforsaken message.
Obviously apple in their own twisted logic believe that this message has
some sort of value and logically it does. I just wish we had more choice
over what was said, even a ding or chime sound would be a lot more bearable.
Let me know what you think.
 i have to do something.

This is a little odd. These options are definitely there. and I have
been setting these options up since Lion. I suggest you try again to see
if you get a more helpful context menu this time.
There are many view options including grid stack etc. The 2 you need to
check are folder rather than stack and list.

suggested, and I can now open the download's folder with VO plus spacebar.
However, this does not work for the documentt's folder on the dock, I hear
VO saying showing stats or stacks - sorry can't hear too good smiles.

In order to access folders on the dock with Voiceover you nee dot assign
different view settings to the default.
You need to set the view option away from the default stack to folder and
specify the view option as list also. This requires repeatedly entering the
options of the dock item with shift vo m.

How to tell if I am on the release level of Yosemite

2014-10-21 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have been a beta tester for Yosemite and over time have installed all the
betas from beta 1 through beta 7.

Does this mean that I am now on the official release of Yosemite? The about
this Mac menu item does not show any build number. It just says Mac OS 10.10.
Software update says that no updates are available.

Just to be sure I did try installing Yosemite from the App store but it said
that Mac OS 10.10 was already installed and that I should check for updates.
However it also gave me the option to install a fresh copy of Mac OS 10.10.

So I did that but to my surprise and annoyance it took me back to Yosemite beta
1! I did not want to go through installing all the other betas so instead
restored a superduper! backup of Yosemite beta 7.

So do I now have the official released of Mac OS 10.10? Is there any way to be
sure? If not what should I do?

Many thanks.

Paul Hopewell

Re: A Warning to All...

2014-10-21 Thread Gordon Smith
There are some great solutions out there which would help you in a case such as
this. The best of them, (in my view), is 1Password. It’s versatile, reliable
and, for those using Windows, it is also cross-platform. I wouldn’t be without
it, and me at least, it is a far more secure option than writing anything down.
It is actually very bad practice to commit passwords and things like that to
hard copy, so say the experts in the security industry. A notebook can be
stolen and just think what a thief could get away with if everything were
stored in that little red book they picked up curing a house break-in.
Naturally, I hope that you’re never a victim of said crime. However, I
personally would never be comfortable knowing that my passwords and private
info were sitting around in a notebook. Granted that if you’re a Braillist it
is more difficult for somebody to steal your ID. But all the same, the
principal of committing that kind of data to paper chills my bone marrow!

Just my thoughts, for whatever they’re worth.

Kind regards

Gordon

Hi All,

Before you set up an Apple ID and password on your IOS device, or a new Mac, I
want to remind everyone to write all pertinent information down either in large
print or Braille, or on a digital recorder, so if you forget your password,
you'll have that to refer to.

I learned this the hard way, when I tried setting up my Apple account, setting
up Mavericks.

Consequently, what happened to me, I ended up with several ID's and none of the
machines I have recognized one. Ultimately, I had to call Apple tech support,
and though they couldn't assist me because of new policies of Apple's,
regarding ID's and Passwords, they did tell me to go to my local Mac Store and
start from scratch.

Lesson learned: Write down, or record, and and all pertinent information before
installing, or while installing and setting up, then file it somewhere so you
can find it, should you forget your ID and Password.

I am aware that many of you are long-time, Apple users and already know this;
however, there are those on the list who are new to Apple, and with the recent
identity glitches and thefts, I think it is a matter of reminding folks to
write down their information. So from now on, I have a notebook which I keep
in my safe deposit box, with all my Apple information so I have it right there
when I need it. I don't store it on my computers or IOS devices because
hackers love nothing better but to intercept ID's and passcodes.

In order to access folders on the dock with Voiceover you nee dot assign
different view settings to the default.
You need to set the view option away from the default stack to folder and
specify the view option as list also. This requires repeatedly entering the
options of the dock item with shift vo m.

Yah, bit if you need to access system directories, it’s a snap when you’ve got
yourself root access on-the-fly. I was struggling with Terminal because I
couldn’t get into the root folders. Now, I can. And after all, it isn’t a GUI

the CLI. Well, enough not to destroy your data, that is.

But here’s another one that I need to resolve. When I log into a site using
SSH, what’s the command sequence? I mean how do you actually manually log in?
I’ve tried everything and I need to get to the right thing pretty quickly. I’m
taking on more network admin work and it involves this kid of access.

 Hi all

I found this by pure accident. If you ever want to log into Terminal as
root, all you have to do is this:

But I think it's safe to say
the upgrade is well worth it compared to 8.0x.

radio logic dj: looks good but so far no joy

2014-10-21 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Hey to all. I'm trying out radio logic DJ and I managed to import all 86
thousand tracks from my iTunes library oops. I then tried again and imported
the correct playlist. Now here's the kicker. I can't see the track list all of
which I want to copy in to the program queue. I know someone else on this list
had this problem. I have not yet emailed the dev about this. I want to find out
if there is a work around. I'm putting together a program for October 31 2014
and I want to see if this will even work.

Take care to all. I read and memorised almost all of the manual so tha'ts no
problem. It's an easy read through.

Blessings.

 hey all,
as anyone who uses VO on the mac will know not many things are as annoying
as the 1 row added message.
My idea is crude and not ideal but it is the only thing I can think of.
If I was to make a new definition in voice-over dictionary i could put the
1 row added and tell VO to say nothing.
like i said, it is not ideal but when using a program such as night owl I
am at my wits end with this godforsaken message.
Obviously apple in their own twisted logic believe that this message has
some sort of value and logically it does. I just wish we had more choice
over what was said, even a ding or chime sound would be a lot more bearable.
Let me know what you think.
 i have to do something.

 thanks

1 Password was A Warning to All...

2014-10-21 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Since 1 Password has been mentioned I’m wondering if anyone can tell me how you
access the Password Generator from the 1 Password Mini icon in the Status bar?

If that can’t be achieved is there any other way of accessing the Generator.

Re: A Warning to All...

2014-10-21 Thread Dane Trethowan
I’ve been using 1 Password here across platform for the last 5 years or so,
don’t know exactly how long its been but as Gordon says, its a tool that one
can’t live without smile.

There’s a bit more to 1 Password than just managing Passwords and Gordon
touched on this, anything you want to keep secure or away from prying Eyes then
1 Password pretty much has the tools to handle it.

1 Password goes deeper than that however, Gordon’s opinions about leaving
Passwords and other sensitive data around are well taken and justified but
there may be times for example when you do wish to share sensitive data and
let’s take a very simple scenario.

Suppose you’re not in the best of health and someone you trust offers to pay
your utility bills but you then realise that you do everything online these
days and your friend doesn’t have the information to access your bank or
whatever but that’s no problem as far as you’re concerned, you can select your
data from 1 Password using the App’s powerful searching facility etc and then
securely share that data, the steps to do this along with a discussion on how
secure the process is can be found in the excellent tutorials for the App.

Anyway I’m rambling.

 hey all,
as anyone who uses VO on the mac will know not many things are as annoying
as the 1 row added message.

Re: Radiologic; Initial Findings

2014-10-21 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Actually I just heard from the dev. He states the following.

I may have to admit defeat here. Radiologik is developed in XOJO and not in
XCode and thus the Listboxes are not being read by Voiceover. Unfortunately,
even if XOJO began to support this, I wouldn’t be able to do this for some time
because in order to use later versions of XOJO, I would need to have a whole
different audio engine developed as some things related to Quicktime have been
dropped.

There is one thing that you might find useful. In the Radiologik DJ menu, you
can select to Install iTunes Scripts. Once you do this, two new items appear in
the Applescript menu when iTunes is frontmost. These are “Add to Radiologik DJ
Queue” and “Add to top of Radiologik DJ Queue”. These will allow you to select
tracks in iTunes and send them to DJ’s queue.

BTW, a track in players 1 or 2 can be fade-finished using the \ key. That is
the backslash. That is the default for both of those players in
Preferences—Keyboard.

Sorry for the limitations.

So it looks like yet more work will have to be done here before we can infact
access the list boxes.

Take care.

VoiceOver. Really fantastic news for me, given that it will greatly
 simplify the way I broadcast.

RE: Looking for feedback on a possible workaround for the horrible 1 rowadded message.

2014-10-21 Thread Debbie April Yuille
I take it, the dictionary manager didn't fix anything then.

damn! I surmised as much.
That ridiculous message seriously impedes a VO user.

Ah yes Michael, I found my notes, it referred to a mis spelt word where
one could alter this info to a sound which is less intrusive so your
suggestion surely must be a possability regarding the one row added. This
change would also be helpful in terms of e-mails when we get the same
information when we receive new e-mails.

 hey all,
as anyone who uses VO on the mac will know not many things are as
annoying as the 1 row added message.
My idea is crude and not ideal but it is the only thing I can think
of.
If I was to make a new definition in voice-over dictionary i could put
the 1 row added and tell VO to say nothing.
like i said, it is not ideal but when using a program such as night
owl I am at my wits end with this godforsaken message.
Obviously apple in their own twisted logic believe that this message
has some sort of value and logically it does. I just wish we had more choice
over what was said, even a ding or chime sound would be a lot more bearable.
Let me know what you think.
 i have to do something.

 thanks

 Michael
