While its a minor improvement, Enditall was a good suggestion Mugzie, your possibly masking a serious problem. I would seriously consider running Hijackthis, Greggs post, and posting the log here or atleast consider rereading the use of the Task Manager and finding a site that lists vaild startup programs and processes, most invaild entries will show with a quick Google search for their .exe. When using the Task Manager (processes tab) you *end* a process, you do not delete anything. Most windows programs can be identified by name, early run processors are easily found on many sites, a site like this random one let you search the name of a process. http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm. Under WinNT you can access the task manager by right- clicking the task bar and selecting the taskmanager. My concern is you have a win32 nasty, a virus scan, spyware or informed hackthis should find and remove/inform you, from there you should be able to continue or repair. Or you have a system/network error, either way it needs fixing not masking, your use in deleting' these tasks should give you the confidence to try a little more. Windows Restore is a tool, I'll stop there. All tools can be useful, if a system is having trouble disable System Restore and run your scans, once you have a clean system use system restore to backup and then make changes, its becomes a useful tool at this point until the next nasty comes along.. Date sent: Tue, 22 Mar 2005 18:48:11 +1100 From: Darren [EMAIL PROTECTED] The IE make over MyIE/Mcombo or the use of Mozilla for surfing will help keep nasties away with builtin popup blockers and such, use IE for updating software, a general tip for any version of windows. Use of a Firewall such a Zonealarm will provide you with many notices and options before the trail expires and it reverts to just a firewall, its updated once every few weeks so you basicly have a full version on a trial all year. ;) the popup at boot does become annoying. I'm with Darren on these points, though I'm not familiar with MyIE/Mcombo. Last year, US/CERT (sponsored in part by Homeland Security) advised that the only semi-safe way to use Internet Exploder was to set all the security settings to High (making it almost unusable) or else to use an alternative browser such as one of the Mozilla browsers, Netscape (which is now based on the Mozilla browsers) or Opera. For myself, I switched to Mozilla and haven't looked back. A few sites (particularly banking sites for some reason) SAY they require Internet Exploder (and may not allow access with another browser), but there's a User Agent Switcher plugin for Mozilla (and a similar function's built into Opera) that allows you to fake out the site by telling it you're running that MesSIE browser--in most cases, you'll then be able to access the site without any problems. Then you only have to use MesSIE (aka Internet Exploder) for Windows Update and sites which REALLY have features that only IE supports due to its proprietary ways. FYI, the Mozilla browsers are free/open source software and I'm told you will find them to be similar to Safari (I believe the story is that the lead developer of Safari had been a major player on the Mozilla team, so a lot of the concepts and features of Mozilla were incorporated into Safari). Mozilla (or its popular lean 'n' mean li'l brother, Mozilla Firefox) can be downloaded from http://www.mozilla.org . At least Firefox also exists in a Mac OS X version, plus they have a parallel browser project going called Camino, which I believe is more tuned to the Aqua interface. Opera (which can be downloaded from http://www.opera.com) has a free adware version and a paid shareware version. The ads are up in the top right hand corner, and aren't really that obtrusive. There's also a Mac version of Opera. If you don't have it installed already, you'll need to get Sun's Java Runtime Environment from http://java.com . It's freeware. Opera (and I think Netscape) can be downloaded with Sun's JRE integrated into the install, but I don't believe the Mozilla browsers have that download option. There's also a free (as in freeware) version of ZoneAlarm, which is the basic firewall. You get that from http://www.zonelabs.com , and it beats the heck outta Windows Firewall. I doubt the source of the problem will show up in the running programs list, most likely it's a running process. Try bringing up the task manager and get a screen shot of the processes or write the list in here. I might recognise some of the processes as I've had problems with my system not shutting down before (sometimes power management issues, sometimes something running in the background that wouldn't quit). -- Original Message -- Reply-To: Mac-N-DOS List mac-n-dos@mail.maclaunch.com To: Mac-N-DOS List mac-n-dos@mail.maclaunch.com Date: Tue, 22 Mar 2005 22:16:06 -0500 From: Brian Futrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: PC won't shut down Gretchen Summers wrote: I have used a spyware diagnostic tool, which in the past did find some programs which it said were spyware. I have to hold in the power button to get it to do so. I suspect some application running in the background that won't quit might be the culprit. Can anyone suggest a way to resolve this? If you were running an older version of Windows (9x/Me), I'd say give it the three-fingered salute (Ctrl-Alt-Del) which would open the Close Program window, select an item and hit End Task, then try again to shut down. Repeat as necessary until you get the right one. But I tried that on an XP machine once and couldn't figure out what to try. (I'm posting this for anyone who may have this kind of problem with 9x/Me.) I presume that no one has installed anything in the last few days (which would lead to a likely culprit) right? And have you done a virus scan and spyware scan (with updated definitions)? An alternate way of doing what I've described above is by using the PC Magazine utility End It All. I use it a lot to minimize memory use for tasks such as CD burning. There are two versions of this program, and I have 'em both--the original EndItAll is a lot more conservative as to what it'll expose for shutting down, so I'd recommend you try that one first instead of EndItAll2. Just select what you do and don't want it to shut down, then hit the end it all button. It's a one-shot deal; everything will reload next time you boot, so you don't lose anything. It also gives you the flexibility to try different things so you can identify what's causing the problem and then uninstall it. I'll email you off-list with zip files of the two programs. Re: PC won't shut down -- Spyware
As far as spyware goes, hope this helps, Gretchen. I've been taking The Internet Tourbus pretty much since I've been on the 'net (over 10 years) and find it's the single best resource for getting savvy about the 'net. I recommend it to you and everybody on the list. Their slogan is why surf when you can ride the bus? It comes out semi- weekly, and is nice and bite-sized so you can get hold of one or two ideas really well. My advice to everybody on the list--GET ON THE BUS! Bob's advice on Ad-Aware and Spybot-Search Destroy is right on the mark. Get 'em both (they're both free) and put any spyware you have in the crossfire. TODAY'S TOURBUS TOPIC: Dealing with Spyware Is your computer running slower than usual? Has your browser's start page been hijacked? Having trouble reaching your favorite search engine? Popups driving you crazy? Most likely your computer is infested with spyware, the cockroaches of the digital age. Read on to learn how to detect and remove these unwelcome pests. -- Spy, Counter-spy -- A recent audit of 4000 UK firms found the average office PC contains 20 pieces of spyware, including system monitors and trojan horses, that could put confidential data at risk. And according to Webroot, the company that performed the testing, consumers are even worse off, with an average of 26 potentially malicious pieces of malware. But before you *buy* anything, check with your service provider -- some of them are offering anti-virus software for free. McAfee virus protection is now included with AOL membership, and Road Runner offers their users the EZ-Armor package at no charge. If your ISP isn't offering any freebies, check out the free AVG package from Grisoft at [ http://free.grisoft.com/ ]. Some programs (most notably peer-to-peer file/music sharing) install others surreptitiously. Toolbars, download helpers, screen savers and email icon packages are often bearers of these nasty pests. And if you have kids, just resign yourself to the onslaught. My favorite spyware zapper is a free tool called X-RAYPC, which examines all the processes running on your system and rates them as Good, Bad or Unknown.
