Re: [MacGroup] Not a 128 Mac DUH!
If everyone is talking about where I mentioned a 128? Why? So someone owns a 128 and it does not look like that? Who said it did? I never said that the link or picture looked like anything? I did say I had a Plus and another guy had a 128? No, it did not have anything to do with it. Should I apologize for mentioning it? So how did that come out of that? Also several months back someone was looking for a Beige G3 and I mentioned a guy that I purchased a lot from on E-Bay? As I have a few but none of the Beige G3s I have was not what they wanted. It was not like it would have benefit me as this guy lives in New York but someone made a comment about it anyway? A couple of years ago I had some stuff that I was selling on E-Bay and sent a link to the list! I did not know what the link said until everyone else did? It said something like I saw this item on E-Bay. I caught hell for that too? Which could have been said differently? Like Steve, we are not allowed to promote our own items? That would have been good enough for me! I have a lot of older Mac stuff (extra parts and such that I could trade or sell) (can I say that or mention it without anyone having something to say?) as I had been trying to get a few items to fix up for my (2) 4 year old Grandsons. One is Hyper and we just found out this year my daughters son is Autisic. I like the advice and answers given but it makes me afraid to say much of anything as it seems like someone is going to make a comment or not like what I said? Maybe that's why they are expecting FORTY THOUSAND Euros!!! I HAD a 128, so I know that the one in the picture is NOT a 128. Pretty cool. I had no idea that such a thing existed! [MacGroup] New Hard Drive PowerMac G5
My 160 Maxtor Hard Drive is still running at present. What would be the best way to installing a new hard drive? I ended up checking around last night online and several office places. I had to pick up a throttle cable for a lawnboy and we was close to Outer Loop and I stopped in at Best Buy. (I'll bet you thought I got a hard drive there?) I did. We did not have any rope or duct tape with us to control the 4 year old. :) We took our Grandson in with us and he tried to get into most everything. I walked past the tech counter looking for hard drives but there was modems and routers. I walked around the end cap and saw a clearance section which was about 4 feet and it had a couple internal and external drives. I saw an internal Seagate Barracuda 500 GB along with 16MB Cache for $64.99 it was a larger hard drive than mine and also had 8 more meg of Cache, I grab the drive and start heading up front and notice the regular location of the hard drives. I glanced down to look at the 500 GB Hard Drives to see how much I was saving? Lets see, oh they are originally $64.99, so luckily I saw the clearance and was able to get it for $64.99 a savings of $0.00? I grabbed a salesman (not that way) and he said he was sorry that it was put there. I asked to speak to a sales rep or manager when all along I meant a District Manager. The store manager ended up showing up and asked me what I wanted? Or what can I do for you and after explaining the situation he offered me $20 off. I took it. I have never saw one either or even knew that they made such a thing. I think all I have is some external scsi cables and one is about 6 feet. (4) You then need to go into your email program (I was using Thunderbird) and IMPORT this certificate file. In Thunderbird's case this was under account settings...security...view (and import) certificates. (5) Don't forget to then SELECT that certificate for that account and check the (Digitally Sign all emails) checkbox. [MacGroup] G5 Network Card or SMA Cable for antenna
I have a G5 and do not get very good reception with my airport extreme card as I am about 75 feet away from the house where my router is. I put a card in my G4 and it now picks up great. It is a RaLink Card. It would also work in my G5 but it is an older card and they are hard to find. I am trying to find a reasonably priced one otherwise I would buy a new one. Does anyone have a network card preferably an N card? That will work in my G5. Or does anyone know of an SMA cable that I can connect to the back of my G5 and then add the antenna so that I can position it for better reception? I also have a brand new Belkin Share N 300 Router that I bought incase ATT did not replace my old G Router. Would I be able to use this in the garage here with my Macs as a bridge? I need help with my G5 memory configuration: I have a G5 with 5 Gigs of memory in it. It is the 2.5 Ghz with the 8 gig configuration. On the right side is just the opposite: 1gig, 512, 512, and 512. Both 1 gig dimms are facing each other in the middle on opposite banks. But in system profiler they show up as the following: Dimm0/J111gig Dimm1/j121gig Dimm2/j13512 Dimm3/j14512 Dimm4/j41512 Dimm5/j42512 Dimm6/j43512 Dimm7/j44512 For it to be a faster machine it seems slower than the G4s and one of them is a DP 867 with less memory only 1.5. It says to install the memory in pairs but I can not afford to get 1 gig dimms at the present time. Should I reconfigure it another way? Re: [MacGroup] Beige G3 mini tower available anywhere? Lincoln Foundation
Looks like I spoke too soon as I thought someone had a computer that they were giving away. I would take just about anything. My son used to be in the scholars program downtown and a lot of the kids in this program are smart but can't afford a computer. If someone did not want to give it to me I am sure one of the Scholars could use it as long as it is not too old as they would need something that would utilize todays technology. I think it is thru the Lincoln Foundation and they were at the corner of 2nd and Broadway across from McDonalds and JCC that corner. Re: [MacGroup] Did I live in a Beaver Pond?
Did I live in a Beaver Pond? We lived at 734 Grade Lane. Shannon Self lived at 736 Grade Lane directly across from The Grocery Liner which they owned. My brother in Laws family owned it before they did which was The Foster Family which was from Boston, KY and My brother in laws older brother owned Eagle Lake (The Old Catfish Haven which is off of Dixie is now called Eagle Lake?) out there which he built. We got to walk thru it before it was finished and were the first ones to fish in it. My Nephews and I was using Cane Poles and caught buckets of fish, the most I ever caught, of course we threw most back in. Then The Salt River would flood into it every year so eventually there was some Big Fish in there. Sorry I usually do not make long posts! Also at about 738 there was Pugs Barber Shop and his house (Pug Gilbert). My older brother used to find a lot of arrow heads where Dixe Cartage or Warehouse is now as I think there was also an Indian Burial Ground near there unless I got my P's and Q's mixed up! The trip between a warehouse and your doorstep, however, involves meticulous organization on a massive scale. In order to pull off such a feat, United Parcel Service (UPS) relies on Worldport in Louisville, Ky.: a 5.2 million-square-foot processing facility that's capable of sorting up to 416,000 packages an hour. Within Worldport, 70 aircraft docks and 155 miles of conveyor belts await the arrival of packages from over 220 countries and territories. So, what happens when UPS gets ahold of those parcels destined for air delivery? The folks clad in brown took us inside their largest sorting hub to find out. Re: [MacGroup] Insight
I had been having trouble too and I am connected thru ATT and I was going to upgrade 1 step above to the quickest but they said it would not help. My router is in the house along with other computers and my macs are in the garage. It seemed like while my reception was dropping the Insight customers kept showing up as possible network connections. The tech that I talked too turned up the range on the router which helped some but there can be other factors such as distance from the router or other obstacles. My G4's did not have as much problems as did the G5 with extreme it would not pick up at all until I bought an antenna. So, it is not just insight but I am sure others have problems too, I am interested to see what kind of answers you receive. Re: [MacGroup] Insight
It seems like after 3pm when the kids get home the reception goes down. When I lived over by Tom I hsd to change my wireless phones to the dect 6.0 and got better reception. I think my airport cards are only capable of G and not N, so I do not think a new router would do me much good and besides the one we have now is furnished by ATT. It does seem like since I talked to a tech the other day my G5 is doing better until 3pm. I have been reeading about internet or reception boosters. Do they work? Would I be better off getting a WiFi usb and then getting an N Router? In the garage I am probably 50-75 feet away from the router. I doubt it's an Insight problem. You don’t say, but I suspect it's a wireless connection. There's probably a lot more neighborhood WiFi traffic in the evening than during the day. Interference from the other routers can seriously degrade your connection. You can check on your signal strength by clicking on the WiFi icon in the menu bar while holding down the option key. This will show you your channel and other information about the connection. In particular, take a look at the RSSI and transmit rate. If the RSSI is -70 or less, then you have a poor connection. A low or fluctuating transmit rate can also happen from interference. Under 802.11g the maximum transmit rate is 54. 802.11n can go double that, in 5 GHz. (If you have any other g devices in use and you're using the older frequencies for your n connection, it won't go any faster than a g connection.) If your devices are compatible, make sure you're at 802.11n and 5 GHz. There are a few things you can try. Change the channel on your router and you might hit one that's less congested. If your devices are new enough, make sure you are using 802.11n instead of 802.11b or 802.11g and you're set for the 5GHz band. The higher frequencies of the n+5GHz connection aren't used by as many devices like cordless phones and baby monitors, so they tend to be quieter and faster. Those frequencies don’t go through walls as well, however. Move your router closer to the computer, or vice versa. This will increase the signal strength. You could also get a signal booster and put it halfway between. If your router is old, then get a new one. The newer routers are much more robust than those of even four or five years ago. There are a few programs on the App Store that claim to be useful for diagnosing WiFi problems. I've used one called WiFi Scanner, but I don’t claim to know it's the best. Steve, Are you saying Safari is not on your volume? What version of the OS are you running? 10.2, 10.3? If you do not see the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then it is likely that you do not have it installed. Did you use the Find command (apple-F) under the File menu in the Finder to look for it? If you do not have it, a simple look at Apple's web site would have gotten you there. http://www.apple.com/safari/ There is a nice big button that says Download Safari 1.2 One you download Safari, it will install itself inside the Applications folder. When you double-click on Safari, you can go to the Safari Preferences under the Safari menu and choose the General icon. You can then set Safari as your default browser. If Safari is running, it will appear in your Dock, simply holding down the mouse button over the Safari icon in the dock will pop up a menu and you can choose to keep it in the Dock. After seeing your second post while writing this, I can launch safari, but nothing in it opens. I do have it set as default. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong? I might suggest you look at the menu bar when you double-click on Safari. Does it show the word Safari next to the blue Apple? If so, then Safari is launching and you should be able to go to the File menu and choose new window. If, when you double-click on the Safari icon you do NOT see the word Safari next to the blue Apple, then you might want to download and reinstall Safari. Next time try to be more explicit when describing the problem. It may help others help you faster. Schoun | The next meeting of the Louisville Computer Society will | be April 27. MacGroup: Re: Mactown
You always take a chance on purchasing something online, even though you can save some money, you still have to consider packaging and shipping costs. Then if the item arrives damaged, you have the hassle of having to fill out claims, if you insured it. Buying local, you have the service, you can get it the same day, and don't have the hassles associated with purchasing from someone you don't know. I bought my used blue and white from MacTown and didn't have to pay anything for shipping and got it the same day. I haven't had any problems with it at all.
