[MacGroup] Safari 13 and ad blocking

2019-10-02 Thread Bill Rising
Hi all,

I'm holding off on updating to Safari 13, because Safari 13 does not allow
extensions, thus making AdBlock (for blocking ads) and Ghostery (for blocking
web beacons and other nefarious gratuitous data-gathering tools) obsolete.
Looking for substitutes wasn't too successful.

What are other people doing here? Does anyone have good substitutions for
AdBlock and Ghostery which work in Safari 13? Are people just giving up on
Safari and using another default browser?

Any tips would be appreciated.

Bill

Does NOT look like the alert(s) I’ve gotten. Caution, though. Simply try
logging in to your account first. If it works, [change] your password. That
seems prudent.

Re: [MacGroup] Safari passwords are locked

2017-06-30 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
Yeah, that would make me nervous, too. But Googling around, it looks like that
is legitimate. It most likely is the same password you use to log into your
computer. If, however, you used a different password for your iCloud keychain,
then it might be that.

It looks like a common Mac thing, though, and not malware.

Let us know how you work it out, please.

[MacGroup] Safari and ApplePay

2017-02-16 Thread John Robinson
Today I had the first opportunity to use ApplePay from Safari on an iPhone.

So cool. Johnathan Fletcher is needing a video of a presentation at our
FileMaker’s user group. My camera will do a good job but it uses SDHC Memory
cards…the one I had broke so what’s the big deal about ordering a new one?
Simple.

The first card from Amazon wouldn’t work, said it wouldn’t record in two
different modes. I wrote to Panasonic and received great service from one of
their tech folks.

I ordered the card he suggested…it came yesterday and again wouldn’t record…

I wrote to him this morning asking for a link to a card that would work.

He sent me to B, one of the best camera stores around.

The Panasonic rep thought that possibly the 8 yr. old camera could not keep up
with the speed of the newer cards so when I checked out using the iPhone there
was an “APPLEPAY” symbol…..well I’ll be.

I clicked on it, used the fingerprint authentication and that was it…DONE. I
didn’t have to give them anything else, my address and other info, to mail the
package was filled in by Apple. Emails arrived from B thanking me and the
order number.

Folks, this is the way to shop. If B is hacked there is nothing they will
get from my purchase and the ease was like nothing I have experienced online.

If this card doesn’t work I’ll make a necklace from all the dross...

For whatever it is worth, I haven't had any trouble with Safari. I do, however,
block ads, so perhaps the cause for Safari hanging is the advertising.

Anne,

Work through this, call Apple Care, they are so helpful. Normally when there
is a problem Apple needs to fix we get an update without undo delay, other
companies not always so. AND for me being able to use ApplePay from within
Safari is worth its weight in gold. Last month one of my chip cards was hacked
from an online vendor, almost $700.00 charged to my card from Germany. If we
ApplePay users will beat the heck out of the places we shop on line this kind
of thing will never happen. I work for State Farm & I pestered them to death
over wanting to pay my premiums & Credit Card with ApplePay. Their response
was they had little interest. Now I pay with ApplePay using their App &
authentication with my fingerprint. Other browsers may never work with
ApplePay, that will be up to Apple. Once in a blue moon I'll go to a site that
doesn't support Safari, they will receive a curt note from me with saying I'm
their customer & they need to support what I like, I shouldn't be forced into
what they like, & I can shop elsewhere.

Look for the articles on browser hacking, Safari is usually much safer.

Well whaddya know. They just loaded fine on my machine this time around. I have
8 crash logs from when they failed to load earlier this morning while I tried
turning on and off various combinations of extensions.

I'll have to update my bug report to Apple.

Thanks for trying them again. I can't imagine what glitch on the NOAA site
would cause Safari to out and out crash, but whatever it was, it must've been
fixed.

Hi All,

Like a complete idiot, I updated to Safari 10.0 instead of waiting for Safari
10.0.1. As should be expected from recent major number updates, Safari 10.0 is
buggy: it can crash when going to harmless websites. [1]

I'd advise not upgrading until Apple does a bit more testing and fixing.

Why, oh, why did I trust the very first version out the door?

Bill

[1] Here is the first example I found: the national weather service page. Go to
www.weather.gov (or its alias nws.noaa.gov), enter a location and hit enter.
Poof! No more Safari. You could also just go to Louisville's weather

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Louisville=KY=LMK=38.2248=-85.7412=1
Ugh

Re: [MacGroup] Safari Question...

2016-06-02 Thread John Robinson
Here is why I like Google search. My grandson wrote to me asking how our FED
raising rates would affect Foreign stocks. He uses the Mac I gave him for his
High School graduation, so it defaults to Bing & he could find nothing.

I tried & had the same dismal results. I changed to Google & instantly found
a couple good articles, sent to him along with my thinking.

So, in this case it was a matter of results.

I have never liked Google over the way they stoled the iPhone due to Eric being
on the board & privy to Apple's R, so he resigned & ran the info to
Google.the very same thing Gates did when Jobs ask him to program Microsoft
products to run on the upcoming GUI interface Gates immediately moved his
Engineers to not worry about Apple, rather move Microsoft from DOS to Windows.
In Tech I don't think you can trust your mother.

Perhaps it is a setting in your Google preferences, then. Kinda weird, though,
if that.

I found some articles on the interwebs about Bing taking over Google search on
some browsers. That could happen with a malicious install or even an extension
that repurposed part of the browser’s interface.

Google, as shown, and I get Google by typing in URL line, Bing by typing in

typing in either. After thinking about it this may be a good feature by
allowing a search from two sources.

Re: [MacGroup] Safari Pop up warning still

2016-01-02 Thread Anne Cartwright
I had done all that Lee and others suggested.

Finally called Apple and after a 50 minute 20 second phone connection with less
than a minute of wait time (!) the problem is solved.

The Apple operator who helped me was excellent. She directed me in an orderly
manner to click on, scroll down, delete this or that, now go up to and so on.
After she had me "clean out all she could think of she had me download a free
program called Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.app (formerly AdWareMedic.com) and
run that. It found two more "hidden" files. And now all seems to work.

Apple Care is wonderful!!! Anyone who buys an Apple product for which there is
AppleCare should buy it. Within the last two months I have gotten a new hard
drive installed and much technical support with an external HD backup and now
this. FREE.

Perhaps you’ve acquired some type of malware when visiting those previous web
sites.

Consider getting/running an anti-malware app to check your system, but not any
of those you’ve been “invited” to use from the popups. An app I've used is
"Malwarebytes Anti-Malware” for the Mac. It’s available as a free d/l from
malwarebytes.org .

2016-01-01 Thread Anne Cartwright
Lee's instructions helped and Safari works fine for a while then I'm back to
where I was getting the http://shop.warningshop.info pop up warning.

Also a new one pop up from http://mypcbackitup.com which says
"VIRUS FOUND
The last website you visited has infected your Mac with a virus.
Press OK to begin the repair process."

And another one: Http://www.fixmymacnow.com
"Please consider cleaning your Mac from junk."

Also get a pop-up on desktop (upper right by Updates Available) saying "System
Scan is recommended (Cancel or Start Scan).

I'm beginning to think maybe I do have a virus.

Running 10.8.4
Safari 6.2.3
Safari Security Preferences set to Block pop-up windows and the Enable
JavaScript is not checked. Also Warn when visiting a fraudulent website and
Allow Internet plug-ins: are checked.

Maybe I need to upgrade my Mac OS But concerned if this will get rid of my
problems. or give me more.

Any suggestions?

Force quit Safari and then relaunch it with the shift key down to stop
the JavaScript thing. After that, make sure your preferences are set to
open a new window whenever you launch Safari and not reload the windows
you had up the last time you quit.

Just move your cursor over to the right side and use your mouse to start

If using a trac pad same principle, just move the cursor to the right and using
your two fingers begin to scroll and the bar will appear.

It’s magic!

[MacGroup] Safari Quits

2014-12-07 Thread John Robinson
I have searched and can’t find a problem like mine.

Every since I have upgraded to Yosemite, Safari quits during the night. It’s
crazy Never does it on startup as some of the other post. Never does it when
using it, as the other post, some say it won’t quit and they have to use Force
Quit. Nope, mine just likesgoing to bed at night….who knows when for I am
usually up well past midnight on the machine so at some point in the early
morning hours it just quits.

Easy to start the next day, never any problems. I have looked under settings
to see if there was something new in this version but I can’t find anything.
Maybe there is a tab I have open that is causing this? If no one knows what is
going on I’ll close all tabs other than Apple and see if it happens.

Thanks as always.

Are these issues related to John’s question(s)?…

All of my running apps slow to an absolute crawl (not unexpected)
when the used memory is extremely low. Very rarely, an app may
exhibit strange behavior or even quit.
I use “Memory Clean” to monitor memory, and the quitting app has
only happened since upgrading to Yosemite.

Is used and/or very low memory involved with an/the app quitting?
Is there a system or app memory leak that could be causing available
memory to be whittled away?

Re: [MacGroup] Safari and C-J

2012-08-13 Thread Richard Meadows
Actually we have the paid account as we take the dead tree edition 7 days a
week. I hate to admit it but the Times Picyune may in fact have the answer
with 3 days a week dead tree and their website NOLA.COM.

But it is not that. It is thing with the C-J and Safari 6.0 and Mountain Lion
which is when it really reared its ugly head. Doesn't do it with google's
chrome and of course no Internet Exploder on my MAC.

Next time it happens I am going to cut and paste the info and send to the C-J
IT dept. Apple already gets it.

Now if the C-J site was as good as NOLA.COM no one here would have a problem.
That is what a city/newspaper site should be like.

I'm still using Safari 5.1.7 on Lion, with no troubles. No direct help for you,
but at least it could narrow the problem to either Safari 6 or Mountain Lion

[MacGroup] Safari, PDFs, Quicktime

2011-08-06 Thread Dan Crutcher
When I click on a link to a PDF file in Safari, the file is opened by the
Quicktime plug-in, which I don't like (it doesn't allow me to resize the view
as much as I want to). This is relatively new behavior, as I believe Safari
used to open such files with an Adobe Acrobat plug-in. Anyone know how to
change the designated Safari plug-in for particular file types? I thought there
would be a tab for that in Safari preferences, but I can't find anything like
that.

Thanks.

[MacGroup] Safari 5.1 and PithHelmet

2011-07-21 Thread Bill Rising
Hey all,

Has anyone who (still) uses PithHelmet [1] tried Safari 5.1? Does PithHelmet
still work?

I realize it uses a major hack (SIMBL [2]), which is frowned on by many, but is
does such a good job at blocking ads that I'm loathe to change to anything
(regardless of the features) if it means seeing all the ADD-inducing ads out
there.

I've found one reference claiming that SIMBL fails in Safari 5.1, but then
there are also reports of clicktoflash [3] failing, which are then refuted.

Cheers,

 Folks, does this still exist?

Several Safari versions ago there was a way to have the browser emulate
another browser, the most obvious choice being Explorer from Microsoft. My
granddaughter-in-law starts Pharmacy school this week and she is having a
hard time connecting to the school system using Safari. The school is vague
about Safari working, saying some versions will/may. They do not support
 Firefox.

I can remember using the feature of Explorer from Safari on a couple sites
what just would not allow anything but Explorer. Now I can't find the
feature, previously it was under the bug reporting icon.

 Thanks for any suggestions.

[MacGroup] Safari and Adult Sites

2011-06-22 Thread Rick Burnett
A few months ago we sold my brother-in-law our old Macbook. The only people
that use it or have access to it are him and his wife (primarily his wife).
He called yesterday because the history in Safari showed a bunch of adult
websites. His wife claims that she didn't visit them. I've never had a
problem with any of my machines doing this, but I'm not sure what the most
current virus/malware situation is. I know that his wife uses Facebook a lot
and is always doing those quizzes and apps and such on there. Is it possible
that one of those could have done something with Safari to make all these
sites show up in the browser history?
They don't try and download music or application or anything that I'm aware
of.
At first I thought perhaps she had been visiting the sites and just not
wanting to tell him, but he showed me the browser history and it is a LOT of
different webpages going back for a few days.

Any thoughts? Has their Mac been compromised or does she just not want to
fess up? ;)

Re: [MacGroup] Safari and Adult Sites

2011-06-22 Thread Rick Burnett
Nah, it's all in fun. No one would have batted an eye if she owned up to it,
but her denial made me worry that their machine had actually been
compromised in some way.
The funniest part is that my brother-in-law called me to see if *I* had been
looking at the sites because it used to be our computer and he thought they
were bookmarks, not browser history.
I tried to explain that a clean OS install and new user account would have
erased any evidence someone at my house might have left behind.

As far as they are concerned the issue is done and no one is at fault. I

Re: [MacGroup] Safari and Adult Sites

2011-06-22 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
It happened to the teenage daughter of a friend of mine. She called me nearly
crying. What happens is that when you try to close the window it runs a
javascript that opens one or several more. Trying to close those results in
many more opening up. Pretty soon you end up with a porn-storm (Good name,
Lee. I never heard that before!) and a really incriminating history.

Good old Command-Q is your friend in those situations. Then open it back up and
clear your history, so it doesn't get talked about by fellow Mac users all over
town.

::-)

BTW, Marta: I know it burns you to no end, but I gotta tell ya, there are times
when you don't have to know everything!

This is one of those times.

[MacGroup] Safari 4

2009-03-02 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
I have been enjoying Safari 4 and I found a trick that had been asked
about on this list and thought some of you might like to hear about it.

ADDING TO TOP SITES
Open up two Safari windows side by side. Open one in Top Site mode and
the other to your bookmarks. Click the edit button on the lower left
corner of the top site window. Click back to the bookmarks window.

Then just drag your favorite sites from your bookmarks to where you
want them to appear on top sites. It appears to not always work the
way I expect it to and I have not fully explored it to figure out why.
For instance, it appears to not be able to move certain web sites. It
also sometimes does not totally rebuild the top sites layout until you
click done. I occasionally get gaps when I'm moving sites around.

You get the idea, though.

of course this version did NOT fix the bug with my BBT bank. I still

For, and only for the BBT bank I have to use Firefox. And still will.
I even have a special number at apple - and they assured me they will
fix the bug !!

Well!

Now about this uninstaller. Can that be installed just in case at a
later date I might want to go back to the old version? It tells me if
I install the uninstaller, this will take me back to the old version.

However, when I looked at my iPhone, there it was, the map in all
its glory. I then tried to forward it to my computer, but there it
only showed the dot again. It did the same on my iMac and also iBook
running Tiger as well as my MBp running Leopard. What does the
iPhone have my other computers don't?

of course this version did NOT fix the bug with my BBT bank. I still cannot
get to do my business on the website. The last Safari update did something to
this website, or better my getting to do my accessing my accounts. Tiger always
worked.

For, and only for the BBT bank I have to use Firefox. And still will. I even
have a special number at apple - and they assured me they will fix the bug !!
Well!

Now about this uninstaller. Can that be installed just in case at a later date
I might want to go back to the old version? It tells me if I install the
uninstaller, this will take me back to the old version.

Re: [MacGroup] Safari and PDFs

2009-02-18 Thread Profile
Possibly the problem is with Adobe, I don't use it and I have no
problem with viewing the PDF's, then if you move the mouse down close
to the bottom of the document you get a screen where you can click
various icons (it is a floating pallet that appears only if you move
your mouse down to the bottom and disappears when you move away from
the bottom). If you click on the far right icon in this pallet it
will save the file to the hard drive otherwise you can read and close
without saving.
