Re: Python
It is, indeed, easy to write accessible GUI applications on the Mac in Python. One way to do it is with WX Widgets. This provides your program standard Mac controls that are accessible just like you see them in other programs. Check out the WX Widgets page at python.org. Re: Python
You can write them either for Linux or the Mac GUI. I would sure love to see some of you talented coders at work on some great Mac applications. I am still new to the Mac, but it looks like a pretty easy job to use wx widgets and Python. You still need a good editor to write these. So far, I'm fairly happy with Bean and, to some degree, Dashcode. Does anyone know of some better ones that are accessible? I know the editor in Eclipse is not useable as far as I can tell, but the rest of the system is and you can still use external editors. RE: facetime
Scott, your partly right, I mean an iPod touch, that you can put a sim card in and use mobile data, rather than wireless b/g. I can't use my iPod touch when I'm in the middle of BFKW, or simply have no wireless network to connect to. But yeah you got the idea. An iPod touch that lets you do everything that the iPhone does, but doesn't have a phone. Basically an iPad but iPod touch and lets you use a sim for mobile data. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionar...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Scott Howell Sent: Thursday, 1 July 2010 9:08 p.m. To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: facetime They do, it's called an iPod Touch. Re: Pages09
Hello Barry. I created a simple table using tabs as the column delimiter and the carriage return as the row delimiter. I then converted the text to the table. I was able to move over the table and Voice Over said that it was highlighted. I then went into the inspector checked the wrap radio button and selected the Object float radio button. The inspector opened but I couldn't read anything. Suggestions? Thanks so much. On Jun 29, 11:59 am, Barry Hadder bhad...@gmail.com wrote: Just select the text to convert and choose format table convert text to table. I also like to use tables in my documents and to write letters and memos. Tables are tricky. You have to use Numbers to create them if you can't see and have to use VoiceOver. VoiceOver can't see tables in Pages documents. However, if there's an existing table in a Pages document, you can copy it into a Numbers document and read it, modify it, etc there, then copy it back again. Messy, but doable. Finally, I like to create address lists that I can translate into Braille. In these situations I would like to use mail merge facilities. Sorry. I haven't done this myself but it should be possible. I have to spend time this summer on creating a user guide for VO users of iWork09. Finally, are their more templates available for pages09 that are not in the template chooser? I don't think so, but you can create your own. Do you also use numbers? Yes, but I haven't done anything complex with it. I've also used Keynote when translating PowerPoint documents. I would say that iWork09 is 95% accessible with VoiceOver. Cheers, Anne -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Brief iBooks pause at page transition and Stanza suggestions for iPhone [was Re: iPhone update!]
Hi Brett, I'm cc'ing this reply about reading eBooks in apps on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad to the macvisionaries list. You wrote: For those who are using iBooks to read epub files, are you noticing around a two second pause when page transitions occur in continuous reading? I am wondering if there is a way to either completely remove the pause or reduce it, so that say all functions more smoothly. If I read a book in file app, or in stanza, SayAll just reads continuously with out pauses between pages and this is the way I would like to read if possible in iBooks. Any suggestions welcome. Unfortunately there's no way to disable the fancy page turn simulation at the transition in the iBooks settings options. You're not the only one who noticed this. In a review titled iOS 4 brings the usual bang from Apple for mobile in the Chicago Sun-Times, Andy Ihnatko gave a very positive review of iBooks (and other iOS 4 features), but stated: I do wish I could disable the fancy page-curl animation. On an iPhone 3GS, at least, there’s a slight, but annoying, additional pause as the app does a whole lot of math. Full article is at: http://www.suntimes.com/technology/ihnatko/2428780,ihnatko-apple-ios4-iphone-apple-062410.article How are you finding the reading experience in Stanza? Are you using this to read your own text content converted to epub, or are you reading from either the free or commercial library selections from the Get Books menu button? If you'd like to try reading some commercial but free (and DRM-free) books, you can try using the following directions to access books in the Baen Free Library. You must already have downloaded the Stanza app on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, and you must access the links I'll supply from that device -- and not from your computer. (Quick background: Baen Books is a commercial publisher of science fiction. They were early entrants into eBooks, and sell their works in multiple formats -- all free of DRM. They also maintain the Baen Free Library of books by authors who are willing to make them available for free distribution on that basis -- often older works or the first books in series. Because these books can also be read in, for instance, an HTML version, it's easy to check the reading experience and content of the eBook versions on the iPod Touch to evaluate the eReader software. The publisher also, very early on, took advantage of Stanza's ability to provide easy tools to link in to Stanza's catalogs or shared library. These instructions excerpt and paste in that link from a much longer web page description which states that the easiest way to add access to the eBooks from Stanza is to click on the link that I supply below.) 1. From your iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad (with Stanza among the applications), double tap on the link to: stanzacatalog://www.webscription.net/stanza.aspx 2. You'll be taken to an Add Book Source page, with text fields for Name and URL filled in with default values, and the button for Catalog (as opposed to Web Page) selected following these entries. Focus will be in the text field for the Book Source name, and the virtual keyboard should be activated with insertion point at the end. You can simply accept all the defaults by double tapping the Save button in the top right corner, but I prefer to first shorten the Name in the text field to Webscriptions so that I don't have to listen to URL extensions announced when selecting my books source in Stanza. You can either just use the delete key or touch the first text field at the top center of the screen and flick right to the clear text button and double tap, then type in your amended name. 3. Double tap the Save button at the top right corner of the Add Book Source page. 4. You'll be taken to the Stanza Catalog Get Books page (in the Stanza app). The Get Books (selected) button is the second of four buttons on the bottom of the screen, following (in left to right order) the Library button, and succeeded by the Now Reading and Info buttons. At the top of the screen are buttons for Catalogs (selected), Shared, and Downloads. customizing apple mail help
Hello, I managed to set up my email account in apple mail today. However, can someone please tell me how to make all new messages go to my google mail inbox? I changed the incoming server to pop.gmail.com and changed the ports and stuff but for some reason in my mailboxes folder I got this gmail expandable item and when I hit vo backslash and go into all mail it says i got thousands and thousands of messages. when I hit command a, followed by command delete the messages go away, but next time I open apple mail they all come back! And I want all new messages to go into my inbox. So if someone could please email me at the email address of jkenn...@gmail.com and explain how to fix this I would appreciate it. Thanks. please help me set up apple mail
Hello, I need help setting up apple mail. My email address is jkenn...@gmail.com and my phone number is 610-373-1245. I set up a google mail account and then deleted it because it was not working right. I'm pretty familiar with how to use voice over but apple mail is giving me troubles. I got a all mail mailbox with 5000 some messages inside it, and also for some reason new messages are not going into my inbox like I would like them to. So if someone could call me, or email me and tell me how or maybe give me a hand setting up my mail kind of like it was in windows where all new mail would go into the inbox and I use a pop email account with google mail I would appreciate it. I just got my macbook yesterday. I since I am having trouble setting up apple mail I have been forced to use safari to check and send mail through the web. I am impressed with this macbook pro! it works great! its not the mac's fault that I'm having trouble setting up my mail, its the fact that I am not used to the apple mail software. At one point with the imap server set up it said it was downloading 1 of 5000 emails and when I went into webmail it said there are only 93 or so in my google mail inbox. so I'm doing something wrong here guys. thanks Josh -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. RE: How do you drag a file or folder from one location to another?
When you move a file, the computer just changes info stored on the drive about where the file is stored. It doesn't have to spend time actually making another copy. That's why people want to move instead of copy. Copying a 1GB folder takes as long as is required to copy 1GB of data. Moving a 1GB folder is almost instant. When dragging and dropping, aren't you just copying and pasting anyhow? If one were to compare what is actually happening with the files, wouldn't it take just as long to drag and drop a 1-gig file as copying and pasting it? Teresa On Jun 30, 2010, at 6:17 AM, John J Herzog wrote: Hi Teresa, I wanted to comment on your suggestion that it is easier to copy and paste versus drag and drop. I'm afraid that, for time reasons alone, drag and drop would be far more useful than copying and pasting currently is. When you drag and drop something from one place to another, it is almost instantaneous. By contrast, copying something that is multiple gigabytes, like an Itunes library for instance, takes quite a while. So, for time sake alone, dragging and dropping would be a far easier method of moving things from one spot to another, if only we could utilize it. Now, however, you have to copy something to a new location, remembering, of course, to delete the previous one if you don't want it any longer, which takes a good amount of time. For this reason, I wish drag and drop would be implemented in voiceover. Because no one needs it, except for the 1% of 1% of Mac users that are blind. Would have thought that someone would have even had spare time to get around to it by now. Has been that way a long long time. I'll have a better solution for this than the move file script by next week, along with some other interesting news. Supposedly, there was some complexity in having the Finder always detect which process was needed, and still account for strange situations, like when a folder on a volume is actually a simlink to a file server. I know that Apple could have worked it out, but it wasn't a quicky fix. I suspect that they put it off for when it could be better implemented, but, since most users don't need it, they just kept putting it off. Re: iphone 4 in Canada?
Amen brother! actually Erick, I had no idea that one might experience an iphone without a provider. I still want a real demo, the person at cellar point was rather confused by the idea of voiceover, even though someone there knew of the access features. still the idea of enough coverage and usage support to make the investment worth it, without having to be tied to a company that may not fully understand the access is a welcome alternative. Some of these are set up so that only a phone from that carrier will activate on the network which may mean that to use a CDMa carrier you have to buy the IPhone from the company. That would of course tend to preclude my doing business with that company. I'd far and away rather get support from the apple store than from any carrier I've done business with in canada. RE: Never Mind, Was Re: How do you drag a file or folder from one location to another?
Sorry but it could never be the case. One cannot put files into oblivion by using cut. The OS only actually cuts after doing a paste. More over, it only cut and paste the very last thing you issued the cut command. You can press the cut command while browsing files and folders endlessly and you'll never lose anything cause you will have to issue the paste command before it does any actual cutting. Also it will make sure that it has pasted first before it will cut. You may turn off, or do a force shutdown, or just unplug but you will never lose anything Vic -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionar...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Teresa Cochran Sent: Wednesday, June 30, 2010 11:23 AM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Never Mind, Was Re: How do you drag a file or folder from one location to another? Re: Sound Flower?
Hi GF, Allison, and Yuma, I'll paste in some more description from an old post of mine to the Mac-Access list written two years ago on the subject of audio routing software. begin quote Subject: Audio Routing Software: Soundflower and Jack [was Re: Getting iTunes to use specific audio device.] Date: June 14, 2008 Yes, it is possible to configure iTunes to play to a different sound output device (such as an alternative sound card). What you need is a software tool like Soundflower or JackPilot, that allows you to reroute your audio connections for the purposes of either monitoring or or redirecting output from one audio application to to another. This kind of capability has been widely used by podcasters who need to separate different audio inputs and outputs. Here's an excerpt from an old descriptor release of Soundflower: Cycling '74 originally developed Soundflower as a way to allow applications developed with its Max/MSP audio environment to process audio originating from other programs. However, it can be used for more general audio routing tasks patching either 2- or 16-channel data at 32-bit sample depth between any applications that support standard Core Audio driver selection. Soundflower can be selected as a default device in the Audio/MIDI Setup utility for programs (such as iTunes) that do not allow the selection of a specific output device. As a result, Soundflower has found widespread use in the advanced podcasting community. Rogue Amoeba (maker of Audio Hijack Pro and Airfoil) distributes Soundflower with its products, but you can separately get the latest version (1.3.1) of Soundflower from snipped end quote HTH. Re: iPad keyboard dock and iPod Touch [was Re: What keyboard shortcuts for external keyboards used with the iPhone under iOS4? ]
Hi Courtney, Congrats on your plans to get a keyboard dock to use with your iPod Touch. I'll cc this post to the viphone list, since there are some posters who have been interested in using the iPad keyboard dock for the iPhone 3GS. I'm not sure whether the Apple Store will carry dock extension cables, since that's the kind of item that may depend on whether they have enough space to stock it while carrying all the new iPads, iPhones, and their accessories. If you want something like the Cable Jive dockXtender (weird spelling) that Geoff posted about on the viphone list for use with the Otterbox Defender cases, then my guess is that you'll have to go through the manufacturer's order page: http://www.cablejive.com/products/dockXtender.html That recently released dock extender cable should work for every case -- as opposed to a lot of cables that worked for nearly every case -- just not the Otterbox Defender. Using the cable won't let you take advantage of the iPad keyboard dock's ability to support the iPod Touch on the base when docked. There are a number of iPod Touch cases that allow you to slide a bottom portion of the case off to dock, though. They include cases like the Griffin Wave and the Incase Slider. On the other hand, using a dock extender cable will allow you to use the headset and mic cables that come with the iPod Touch to control your playback and use voice control, since you can still access the headset jack at the bottom right of the iPod Touch. This iPod Touch headset jack is covered up when the iPod Touch sits in the dock, unlike the case for the iPhone 3GS and iPad where the headset jack along the top right side of the device, and so remains available even when the device is docked. If I'm listening to audio from the iPod Touch through a headset, instead of through the iPod Touch speakers, I'll connect my headset to the mini-jack port in the support base of the iPad keyboard dock. That won't allow me to control the volume and playback through the headset controls, but I can use the keyboard controls to rewind, play/pause, and fast forward, and I attach a volume control cable that you can get from Radio Shack to dial down the volume. (I'm not sure the link will work, but the product is Gold-Plated Volume Control Cable for Stereo Headphones, Model: 42-2559, Catalog #: 42-2559, with current price of $8.99, which seems more than I paid.) Web URL is: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102975 When I use my iPad, I simply use the headset controls directly, or the keyboard media controls for playback (F7, F8, and F9 positions for rewind, play/pause, advance) and volume control (F10, F11, and F12 positions for mute, decrease volume, increase volume), just as on the Macbook keyboard. Since I'm more likely to use my iPad for extensive note taking an typing, this isn't an issue. I don't really need to have all the media controls through the headset mic cable if I'm actively typing, and if I'm not typing large amounts of text I'll pull the iPod Touch off of the dock. If you want more portability you might want to get the Apple Wireless Keyboard. The action of the keyboards is the same: these are both the relatively flat, chiclet type keyboards used with the current generation Macbook (Pro) laptops. Each key is separated, the f and j keys have horizontal bars to distinguish them by touch, and the key action has the relatively short travel distance of current laptop keyboards. The keyboard dock does give you a few more keys, such as the one to return to the home page, and the one to take you to the search page (first two keys in the top row, starting at the left). HTH. Esther, knowing your such a wealth, a fountain of information, do you know how much of an impact there is on the battery of your iPod Touch or maybe even an iPhone if leaving bluetooth on with all the other stuff? I also think it would be nice if bluetooth could be set to non-discoverable once you have a device paired, but that may not have any affect on security or battery savings. tnx, On Jul 1, 2010, at 4:14 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Courtney, Congrats on your plans to get a keyboard dock to use with your iPod Touch. Re: iPad keyboard dock and iPod Touch [was Re: What keyboard shortcuts for external keyboards used with the iPhone under iOS4? ]
Hi Courtney and Scott, I'll answer both your questions here. If you take your iPod Touch out of the case (or slip off the bottom of the case) to dock it on the iPad keyboard dock, then you don't need a dock extender to use it with the keyboard. The only trade-off for you is that you won't be able to plug in a headset into the headset jack, since the bottom of the iPod Touch sits against the dock support. That means that you won't be able to use the controls on the headset with mic that came with your iPod Touch to control volume, track navigation, and do voice control if you want to use a headset instead of using the iPod Touch speaker. If you do plug in a headset (or good audio speakers), you have to do it through the mini-jack in the base of the iPad keyboard dock. Although this supplies quite good audio, there's no volume control, and I find it a bit loud. That's why I attach a control cable from Radio Shack in between. This is just a short cable that plugs in between the mini-jack and my headset with mic, so I can dial down the maximum volume that passes to the headset on a geared wheel. You can only control playback, volume, etc. from a headset if it's plugged directly into the headset jack of your iDevice. Someone who wanted to use the iPad keyboard dock with an iPhone 4 might need or prefer to use a dock extender, however. Scott asked: do you know how much of an impact there is on the battery of your iPod Touch or maybe even an iPhone if leaving bluetooth on with all the other stuff? I also think it would be nice if bluetooth could be set to non-discoverable once you have a device paired, but that may not have any affect on security or battery savings. I haven't had a lot of experience with Bluetooth devices and the iPod Touch. I have found that if the device is paired, I can go to the Setting menu to check the device status, press the right side switch on the Apple Wireless Keyboard (the round circle on the side opposite the circle with a notch that allows you to open the device and load/ unload batteries), and turn pairing off (as well as turn the Wireless Keyboard off). Then, when I turn my Wireless Keyboard on and turn Bluetooth on for the iPod Touch, the device pretty much automatically pairs (although I do double tap the keyboard among the discovered devices just to be sure). Dragdropkeyboard support
Yes I do think it is getting funny but the laugh is on us who cannot use an important feature. I really believe all that is needed for cut and paste using just the keyboard is already there in the OS since drag and drop for the visual user is really cut and paste only with another name and mouse driven. I don't know whether to cry or laugh when somebody comes up saying that cut and paste is very dangerous because drag and drop has the same function or end result anyway only with a different way of doing the same and minus the keyboard support. Why not us Mac blind users just petition Apple to put a keyboard shortcut for their drag and drop? Maybe then we could do away with Windows all together. Smile. I raised a similar issue when I was a new Mac user and got my head chewed off for the effort. LOL! I sincerely hope we could be objective and not be counterproductively zealots for one particular thing or another. We could help each other with our different needs. I don't have to be in disagreement just because a particular feature is not important to me. If it is not going to harm me and it could be useful to someone else, then by all means I will support you brother! Grin. Before it left, I made a bootable backup to an external hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. How do I restore my data, mail settings, etc? Sarai Come join me on Swagbucks! It's free! Re: burning a cd in mac os10.6.4
Hi, Don't you want to make an audio CD? If that's the case, they should all play on a standard CD player. If they're wav, they should compress to standard audio. Unless you're making a data CD, which unfortunately CD players that play those are a little harder to find. If you are planning to make a data CD, there's no disc at once option in Itunes. Re: ripping cds
Hi, Itunes is the equivalent and you can set it to rip Mp3's instead of the Apple format known as M4a's. Maybe somebody can explain it better than me. But there's also a CD ripping called Max. Another one, I just discovered it, it's called N.Mp3 ripper. All three of those programs are quite accessible. Re: iPad keyboard dock and iPod Touch [was Re: What keyboard shortcuts for external keyboards used with the iPhone under iOS4? ]
Thanks Esther. I guess now that I have my keyboard pared, I will just have to try and see what affect on battery life there is. On Jul 1, 2010, at 6:12 PM, Esther wrote: Hi Courtney and Scott, I'll answer both your questions here. I have found that if the device is paired, I can go to the Setting menu to check the device status, press the right side switch on the Apple Wireless Keyboard (the round circle on the side opposite the circle with a notch that allows you to open the device and load/unload batteries), and turn pairing off (as well as turn the Wireless Keyboard off). Then, when I turn my Wireless Keyboard on and turn Bluetooth on for the iPod Touch, the device pretty much automatically pairs (although I do double tap the keyboard among the discovered devices just to be sure). That won't allow me to control the volume and playback through the headset controls, but I can use the keyboard controls to rewind, play/pause, and fast

I don't know whether to cry or laugh when somebody comes up saying that cut and paste is very dangerous because drag and drop has the same function or end result anyway only with a different way of doing the same and minus the keyboard support. Keyboard issues with fusion, suggestions?
I know some of this has come up before, but info gets lost in other subjects and messages, so I was hoping to maybe see this addressed in one message. Are any of you successfully running windows on a macbook pro, using jaws or SA? And if so, do you have any tips or tricks? My main issues are two. One, as I've mentioned before, is that even with sharp keys, I can't get an insert key that works reliably. For example, after remapping a key to insert, I can get the insert-t to work for SA, but not insert-f. Instead I get the find dialog. Second, I need to find a way to reliably switch the keyboard from the mac side and into windows. It's flakey to say the least, even with VO off. sometimes I'm in windows, sometimes I'm not, and more often than not it takes several tries of turning VO on, seeing where I am, turning it off again, trying keystrokes, before I get it working. I really, really want to switch this to my primary machine, but I simply can't with these keyboard troubles. If it makes a difference, I often find myself using the trackpad commander when on the mac side of things. Thanks for any help on these issues or any other tips! This is true for the pop server, but not the smtp server. Make sure you select the default ports setting (25, 465, 587) for the smtp server. Other wise, you'll be receiving messages but not sending.
