I had a Christmas budget, and I thought I had spent exactly $20, but it turns out tax was added to my purchases--tax that iTunes doesn't appear to make you aware of till after the fact. Re: Hackintosh, is it legal?
Hi Brandt, I suppose that all depends on exactly how you define legal. grin In any case, I think the biggest drawbacks in my own experience, is the lack of support and inability to update the OS. However, if you possess rather stellar skills at compiling and hacking, you might just be able to get around that. Much of the basics of mac and VO operation I learned on a hackintosh, but was relieved to finally purchase a legitimate Apple computer. Re: Hackintosh, is it legal?
One thing I don't get is why Apple doesn't just go ahead and support personal computers. I could understand if they were still using the PowerPC processors why they wouldn't support PC's because it was a different processor. However, since Apple computers now use the same processor as the PC, it seems like they would be able to support this. Just think, Apple could probably run a commercial that goes something like this: Are you tired of Viruses, crashes and spywhere? Just install this DVD. that would probably resinate with a lot of people and Apple could give Microsoft a run for their money. Re: Hackintosh, is it legal?
Just before Steve Jobs came back to Apple they did do this, and the results were less then Stellar. When Apple owns the complete hardware and operating system, then they can do better quality control, and that directly effects their ability to support customers as well as they do. I have to say it is a bit amuzing to bring a 5 year old Macintosh into an Apple Store. Generally the G bar folks try hard to help, but if the machine needs a new display or back light the or power cord they generally say go to this shop down the road called Mac Heaven. :-) Jon On Dec 31, 2010, at 1:09 PM, Ryan Mann wrote: One thing I don't get is why Apple doesn't just go ahead and support personal computers. Re: Hackintosh, is it legal?
As someone pointed out, Apple can ensure a certain experience on the Mac platform by not supporting a very wide variety of hardware types THis model has worked well for Apple and honestly most people do not care what is under the hood, but instead care if it works. I used to like hacking and mucking about with machines, but now I just want to turn it on and get my task completed. I do not want to build hardware, compile programs, etc. You know this whole APple experience is all about it just working and in 99% of the cases it does just that. Just think, Apple could probably run a commercial that goes something like this: Are you tired of Viruses, crashes and spywhere? Just install this DVD. that would probably resinate with a lot of people and Apple could give Microsoft a run for their money. Re: Hackintosh, is it legal?
one argument that doesn't favor wide adoption of pc support is that they keep the hardware limited, and support chosen and hand-picked hardware. Keeps the tech calls down. Just think, Apple could probably run a commercial that goes something like this: Are you tired of Viruses, crashes and spywhere? Re: Hackintosh, is it legal?
he must have been running some pretty off the path hardware. I ran a hackintosh on unsupported hardware from 10.4 on up to the current OS X 10.6. I got an apple mac mini earlier this year and dumped the Hackintosh. for me, setting it up was a lot easier than most. I stuck with an intel branded motherboard with a chipset that was easy to support, a video card from nvidia that IS supported and a sound card that can be supported. this made setting it up and getting it to work a lot easier. now, if you try this on an AMD cpu, you are going to have a lot of issues. in some cases, you won't even have a working machine because of all the issues. anyway, if you can get a used mac mini, get it. they are under $400 and work very well. -Eric On Dec 31, 2010, at 1:09 PM, Kaare Dehard wrote: I had a friend that had one, by the time he spent tweeking and pulling and slashing, it took a lot of hours to get the system marginal... Re: very peculiar behavior change with audible.com
Hi, As already stated, you have to have the latest update for the Click to Flash pluggin. Then you must go in to Safari preferences to extensions. Make sure extensions is turned on. Then you need to interact with your list of extensions and make sure that you have click to flash selected. Next VO to the right and interact with the extension info group. You should hear click to flash 1.9.2. Next, VO to the right until you hear video settings. Keep moving right and make sure that the next four check boxes are checked. The fourth box is the critical one. It says load the video player automatically. This box must be checked. Keep moving right until you get to the first popup button. Make sure that it is set to Start buffering. You can now press command+w to close the preferences window. This should cause the video player to show up and allow you to play the audible samples. If your click to flash extension is not the latest one, you will have to go back to the extension list in the preference window and make sure that no extensions are selected. I can do this with the down arrow after interacting with the list. Next interact with the extensions info group and with no extensions selected, when you VO right, you will see updates. Interact with updates and you can either choose to manually update the extensions or you can check a box which says update extensions automatically. As soon as you check this box, your quick to flash extension will be updated. Mike, they may call it against their license agreement, but they cannot hope to force someone to use it that way. However, it is not against any law that I know of. if you can make it work, you should be able to support it. Apple won't support it and they are within their rights not to. for them to sue you over a small thing such as this will result in a lot of negative publicity they don't want. about the only thing they can really do is lock you out of their app store and turn off updates for your machine. I ran a hackintosh for close to 7 months while I saved up for a mac mini. it even got me through my total visual loss. I doubt that windows would have been so forgiving. it was adjudicated sometime in the 1400's in a british court that the manufacturer of a hammer was not allowed to enforce the type of use for the hammer on he person that purchased the tool. same goes here. this is why apple hasn't really taken anyone to court. besides, they also look at the devs in the hackintosh community as a valuable resource to help solve bugs. -Eric On Dec 31, 2010, at 7:16 PM, Mike Arrigo wrote: Really they're not legal, Apple states as part of the license that the operating system shall only be used on an actual macintosh, so it's against the license agreement. Re: new mac user
You'd export the favourites from IE as HTML, then import to safari. Depending on your mail, You can save the file as a CSV (meaning comma separated values), and import it. Most likely there's a way to do this with favorites. But, I haven't attempted it. Think you'll love the Mac.
