Apple Mail question.
I've had disk issues with my mac since day 1 and finally after 2 years talked apple into installing a new hard disk so I'm setting up from scratch again. With this in mind, I've somehow stumbled on the 48000 messages that were somehow stored on my mail server. There now all in an old messages folder in apple mail. This is good because I don't have to try and grab the couple of thousand archive messages from my corrupted ccc boot disk backup but trying to work with 1 folder with this many messages is painful. The amount of busy notifications and mail restarts is astounding. grin My question is, I'm trying to apply message rules to this folder so that I can have list messages in appropriate folders to be able to work with them but all I can find is control option l to apply message rules. I've tried this in the folder with all message s highlighted and not highlighted but nothing seems to be working. Is there a way to force apple mail to apply rules to a specific folder or set of messages? Thanks in advance and apologies for the next batch of questions in advance also.. Hi Zoe. The HQ voice should automatically be downloading. You won't see it on iTunes or your iPhone that it's downloading, but rest assured, it is downloading. Just be patient and it will come. Hi, I think the problem is that you've got so many messages and it will take a long time for Mail to scan your messages and apply the rules. I've done this before with a few thousand messages and I too thought nothing was hapenning for a long time. I can't imagine what it would be like with 48 thousand. So, my advice, after you try applying rules, press command-option-0 to view Mail activity. Take a look and see if Mail is doing anything. If it is, then just give it time. Thanks muchly for the tips. I didn't know the mail activity hotkey. That's great to have. I decided I had to trim the monster mailbox down to give mail a chance to be able to function at all so I've been experimenting with folder searches saved into smart folders where I can delete or move as required and it seems to be helping. I've gotten rid of 3 or 4 thousand so far but have a long way to go. turns out it was still downloading and there were 65000 messages when it had finished.. I'm frankly amazed mail can function at all with this. Windows would have pooped itself to death way before this. smile. Thanks again. Danny. Ok guys, let's say paralel is out. if I go with fusion, am I to understand that I would not be able to boot windows up independedntly and use windows commands? I like the idea if sharing files and etc between windows and mac but I'm a little afraid of not being able to use windows independently, Also excuse me I'm not familiar yet with all the mac terminology, but I think if I get the mac now it would come with mountain lion, but I think I read somewhere that something new is coming out in the fall, should I wait for the fall to get the newest out there or should I stick with the mountain lion and get it now? All Windows commands will work. The left control key is the only problem, since it switches you between mac and windows. So, you can alt-tab between windows programs, while command-tab (normally used to move between programs in the mac) will do nothing. Once you hit that control key, though, command-tab will move you between mac apps, letting you get focus off of windows and onto a mac program, which is the whole point of running a vm instead of bootcamp. I believe you can configure the key to be something other than control, but someone more experienced will have to comment on that. Yes, OS10.9 Mavericks is coming in the fall. If you can stand to wait, holding off until it is released will save you the cost of upgrading (usually $20 to $30), though last year Apple gave free upgrades to those who bought Macs close to the Mountain Lion release date. Still, there is no telling when the date for that program is, assuming it happens at all. I have Mac Mini and regret it - I'd so much rather have a laptop. That said, since you are choosing between a Mini and and iMac, it sounds like you only want a desktop solution. In that case, it depends on your vision and what you want to buy. The iMac has a large screen, so you only need a keyboard and mouse, whereas the Mini has no screen but is much smaller. This means you can hook the Mini to any monitor or TV you might have, and the actual tower will take up less room and cost less. If you rely on enlarged text as well as speech, the iMac might be good for you due to its large screen. If you need speech only, the Mini would be better since it is cheaper and you can just hook up a small monitor to it, taking up less space. Some Minis need a monitor connected, even if it is never on, or they slow down and become hard to use, which is why I did not say you could forego the monitor entirely. Besides, when sighted family or friends need to use the computer or help you should something happen to speech or your speakers, having a screen right there can be very helpful. All: This was very helpful but it is still a pain. Is there a way to just ad a mobile number without going in to the labels thing and back out? Somehow I am not seeing the field for the phone number unless I go into the label thing first. Also, I am written to the people who made VO Calendar and implored them to make a contacts manager. Deleting messages from the server when you delete from mial
Hi guys, I am curious about something and I couldn't find it in the setting sso I'll take any help I can get.How do you go about deleting messages from the server either ronde you delete in mail or once they're downloaded so they don't keep coming back. I'm running mountain lion, 10.84 I believe is the update )I meant 10.8.4 I think is the way that is) with mail 6.5 I've got an exchange server set up from work, and my gmail account is set up on iMap. Is iMap the reason you can't actually delete the mail, does it keep showing up or is there a way to get rid of it as you finsih and delete it. Just curious. I definitely need more coffee, I'm thinking it has to be that it's iMap but not sure. any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys. Hi Tim: I have the same problems with my iMap Gmail account. I'm assuming in the mail settings on the mac you have delete from server checked? It is an issue on Gmail's side. Sometimes it helps to go in to the trash folder in mail and command a, then press shift delete. Thanks Sarai and folks for the answer on my mail. Got that straightened out. Now, I have one for you. See, I told you I would get coffee and find something else. How do you go about formatting a Usb drive, or Nls cartridge on the mac. I've missed this one and thought I had it and can't find anything to show me where I need to go and format a drive. I had a linux system that I had downloaded some Nls books on a cartridge and some other files. In the process Linux left a few unsavory somethings not he cartridge that I wanted to wipe clean and make it brand new again but I can't get in and find the formatting option anywhere. I used to be able to find it but i haven't had to use it in so long and MountainLion is a little different than snow leopard was at work when I had to use this then, so just a bit stuck. But, I can get info but I can't find where to format the drive. Thanks again and take care. Hi Jean, Are you moving your finger up/down to find items or are you swiping left/right? There is no need to tap the Mobile button first in order to access the related Edit field. Visually, the label is on the left and its related Edit field is located to the right of the label. So, if you're moving around with your finger, then going down the right side will let you locate that Edit field. Remember, that when VO announces the Mobile Phone, Edit field, it is simply telling you where the VO cursor is, you need to double-tap on that Edit field to make it active and thus, editable. If VO is focused on that field and it is ready for text entry, VO will announce Mobile, Text Field is Editing, Phone which tells you what field VO is on, whether it is a phone number, eMail address or other address type of field. As someone else mentioned in an earlier post, it does seem to work better when you use the Swipe right/left commands to navigate through these elements as opposed to moving your finger around trying to locate specific elements. So, if you've double-tapped on the Add button, swiping right moves you forward through the Add Photo, First name, Last name, Company, Mobile button, then Mobile Text Field and so on. When VO announces button, then that is an actionable item that will usually bring up a new dialog or new screen. When VO announces Text Field, then double-tapping should bring up the keyboard. Regarding scrolling through all the contacts in your list, when you place your finger on the far right of the screen, the Table Index should appear, then simply swipe up or down to quickly move through the letters of the alphabet until you get to the letter you wish. Once on that letter, for example, K for Kilburn, then swipe right to start browsing through the contacts starting with the letter K. One thing that may be useful to you as well, is to use the Favourites area of your Phone app. If you have a person from your Contacts that you call often, go into your Contacts app, locate that individual, go to the bottom right of your screen and double-tap the Add to Favourites button. I keep about 10 people in my Favourites so that they are quickly able to be contacted. Two other gestures that may be useful are the four-finger touch near the top or four finger touch near the bottom of the screen. These gestures take you quickly to the very top left or very bottom right of the screen respectively. This gesture can assist you in getting back to the Done button in a quicker fashion. HTH. Hi, Both Exchange and iMap do work in similar manners with respect to the reading and deleting of messages. That is, they will both usually mark messages as read on all units connected to the same account and similarly, if you delete a message when on one machine, it should show as deleted on the other machine. On your Mac for your GMail account, go into Mail Preferences on the Mailbox Behaviours tab. Make sure that Move Deleted Items to the Trash and Store Deleted Items on the Server are both checked. The item right after that that pertains to how often to automatically remove items from the Trash used to be an issue between Apple and Google's way of dealing with Deleted messages. I'm fairly sure that this is still the case so, I tend to leave that on Never and let GMail do it's 30 day Archive thing all by itself. Later... Hi, I find Chrome to be quite snappy most of the time. I also find that, from my point of view anyway, that it works much better with ChromeVox than with VO. Sometimes you need to have both VO and ChromeVox on at the same time, especially when accessing menus since ChromeVox is only useful within the Chrome Browser itself. Later... 2 extremely frustrating problems - please help
Hi all, I'm facing 2 weird and frustrating challenges while using Safari on my Mac. 1. Sometimes, when I press command-l, instead of being directed to the address bar, I am directed to the downloads folder in Safari. Similarly, when I press M in Safari, it opens Apple Mail even when I am in Safari. This gets automatically fixed when I restart my Mac a couple of times. 2. Sometimes, when I use the keyboard to type something, instead of showing the letters that I type, it shows weird symbols like Ó´. Have I inadvertently enabled or disabled something? As to virtual machine applications, I have no information on Parallels, but I know Fusion is accessible. Virtualbox, another program, is not very accessible, but it can be used. However, I had sound problems when I tried to use it, so i'd stay away from that one. Really, Fusion seems the best option, unless (as another poster said) Parallels has been updated to be accessible. Please don't hesitate to ask questions about the mac as you learn it. Me too. Option-cmd-l opens downloads; option-m, if you enabled the keyboard commander, opens mail; option with most characters types an alternate character, like option-8 for a bullet. So, check the physical key on your keyboard and be sure it is working correctly. If it is not a Macbook, you might want to replace the keyboard. Well, ok twenty or thirty dollars isn't so bad so I think I can go ahead and when mavric comes out the cost is ok. Yes the large screen will benefit my better half and I do have a little vision that when typing large white print on a black background I can manage. Thank you so much for the info. This means you can hook the Mini to any monitor or TV you might have, and the actual tower will take up less room and cost less. If you rely on enlarged text as well as speech, the iMac might be good for you due to its large screen. If you need speech only, the Mini would be better since it is cheaper and you can just hook up a small monitor to it, taking up less space. Some Minis need a monitor connected, even if it is never on, or they slow down and become hard to use, which is why I did not say you could forego the monitor entirely. Besides, when sighted family or friends need to use the computer or help you should something happen to speech or your speakers, having a screen right there can be very helpful. itunes match content versus what's on my hard drive
I wonder if there is a way to find out which songs did not get uploaded when I subscribed to iTunes match. If I select the match radio button with music selected in the sources table, I see that there are a certain number of songs, 11 thousand some, that are available in the cloud. But if I go to the songs radio button and select that, so it shows me what's on my hard drive in the iTunes media for music, there are a couple hundred or so songs more that didn't make it into the cloud. I have run a program called tune up, which is suppose to find and eliminate duplicates. Actually, I got sighted help, since the app isn't accessible with VO. So there shouldn't be any duplicate records; I wonder what caused the difference in number of songs and how to tell which didn't make the grade, so to speak. As to virtual machine applications, I have no information on Parallels, but I know Fusion is accessible. Virtualbox, another program, is not very accessible, but it can be used. However, I had sound problems when I tried to use it, so i'd stay away from that one. Really, Fusion seems the best option, unless (as another poster said) Parallels has been updated to be accessible. Please don't hesitate to ask questions about the mac as you learn it. We are all here to help, and some of us are even happy to talk to you on the phone or skype if necessary. I was doing some exploration of Speech-Voices and some how checked the mute. Everything is silent and Command F5 says Voice Over is running is on, Speech is off. How do I turn speech is on? Hi, well, I have a keyboard commander command set up to mute/unmute speech, option D. Otherwise, go to VO utility. press command 3. Press VO command J three times, this should be the mute/unmute speech checkbox. Press spacebar to uncheck. HTH. Very odd problem with pop-ups on a site
I am trying to sign up and create a profile on a site, and everything else on the site, including an accessible capcha, is fine, but the pop-ups aren't working. Direct messages are in their own tab. Either cmd-right twice from the main timeline tab, or press ctrl-3. Incidentally, mentions are one tab right of the timeline, or ctrl-2, and, of course, the main timeline is ctrl-1. You have other tabs, and can even make your own if you want to, though I have not tried that yet. To view a conversation, move to a tweet and press cmd-3. This changes your current timeline to show all messages in the conversation; hit cmd-1 to return to normal. By the way, cmd-2 shows a user view, which is recent tweets from the user. The newest official release seems to work ok, though it presents some things differently than safari does. Voiceover says leaving row quite a bit. Chrome works pretty well, the only part that doesn't work is list boxes, you can use chromevox, or use it with voiceover. When you start it, the focus should be on your main timeline (once you log in of course). From there, use cmd-right or left to move through your timelines (home, mentions, DMs, favorites). Up and down arrows will read tweets, provided Quicknav is off, and for all other commands, have a look through the dropdown menus, specifically the tweet and timeline menus. You will also wanto to open preferences with cmd-comma, go to the compose tab, and disable the username and hashtag autofill options. Hi, I don't believe so, but you can purchase a Gift Certificate through the iTunes Store that is eMailed to the recipient. The Gift Certificate usually can be used for anything in the iTunes or App Stores and thus be able to be used for iTunes Match subscriptions since it just is a charge to your Apple ID account. Hi, Yes, I'm pretty sure that I heard of some issues with ChromeVox when using some of the newer voices. I know that you can use it with Alex just fine. You may also be able to use Alex to begin with and then select one of the Google Voices instead of using an Apple Voice. This may fix your issue. Later... Hi, When showing your Music Library in iTunes, press cmd-j to bring up your View Options. Check the box that says iCloud Download. This will put a new column in your Music Table that will read Local if it is stored locally, Needs Upload if it still needs uploaded to iCloud, Download if it is only in iCloud, Error if there was an error, and Ineligible if it is something that does not get stored in iCloud. That could be things like Album covers and such. If you sort things by that column, you can easily locate the items that are not Local which would possibly be the ones causing the number difference.
