Re: Voices in the rotor in High Sierra

2017-10-15 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Tim,

thanks for confirming the issue and thanks for the idea. Unfortunately it
didn’t work. In this section there were just the three voices checked which I
want to find in the rotor setting for voices. Fred wasn’t checked even though
Fred appears in the rotor and I wasn’t able to uncheck this voice then.

I sent a bug report to Apple and they confirmed this. Of course they don’t know
when it will be resolved.

All the best
Jürgen

 Listers,

I must say i dislike the way the new voice rotor works. Up until Sierra,
if you needed more than one language to work with, you would customise the
rotor by adding languages and then you would be able to choose the
language you want on the fly by vo+command+arrow keys. The issue in High
Sierra is not that one needs the addition of the shift key to work but
rather that I have some other languages in the rotor which I have not
chosen and I can’t get rid of them. Those of you who use more than one
language, can you see the same behaviour? Also, before High Sierra, when
you chose a different language, the previous one you had been using was
just the next in the list if you wanted to return to it, all you needed is
one press of the key combination for the voices menu. In High Sierra you
have to go back up the list if the voice you have chosen is the third or
fourth, because the previous voice remains where it always has been in the
list. Could you test it for me?

 Many thanks

 Andrew

2017-10-15 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi, Sandie,

I think you're very smart for sticking with IOS 10. Since updating, I'm seeing
slightly better results in Maps, but honestly, I'm wishing I'd done what you
did. And before anyone goes off on a rant about how people just can't accept
change, won't learn new things, blah, blah, blah, I'm quite receptive to new
operating systems. I just don't think IOS 11 is an improvement in any way,
shape or form.

I don’t use it when I’m home as I know my city without the need to use

2017-10-15 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Alex,

I know this, but it just doesn’t work. I think you are speaking from the
knowledge you have of how things should work but in this instance they don’t.
I’ve unchecked everything that possibly could be unchecked and I’m still having
these voices enabled. I hear from other members of this group that they are
encountering the same issue. It therefore is a bug. Please tell me that you
do work in the multilingual environment and that you do not encounter my
problems. That would make me think that there’s something wrong with my set
up. I did a clean install of High Sierra by the way.

Re: Voices in the rotor in High Sierra

2017-10-15 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Dear John,

That is exactly what I have done with no effect. I’ve been a user of Voiceover
for ten years, so I have quite a bit of experience of problems, and that’s what
I’ve done straight away. But this hasn’t produced any improvements. That’s
why I think it may be a bug. Are you saying that you work in the multilingual
environment with many voices and that you are not experiencing the same
problems that I’ve described?

Re: Voices in the rotor in High Sierra

2017-10-15 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hi Alex, did you really check this? In High Sierra it is broken in that way
that there are some voices in the rotor which are not checked in VoiceOver
utilities and which I never would have checked like Fred. So, if you know a way
of removing them I'd be more then delighted.

Thanks, Jürgen

Re: terminal work

2017-10-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

With Jonathan's good advice regarding different connected volumes, do the
following:

sudo cp -av source_folder target_location

As Alex mentioned, when the password prompt is displayed, enter your regular
Admin password. You will not get any feedback while entering it. It will just
ask for the password again if you enter the wrong one, or move on if it's good.
Again, you can still use the copy/paste method to ensure your source and
target locations are entered using the correct syntax.

HTH.

everything with the password and then terminal quit unexpectedly after a little
while when I thought it was actually working! totally frustrating this whole

Re: terminal work

2017-10-15 Thread Alex Hall
Sudo requires a password. Type it as you did the first time, and when Terminal
asks for your password, type in the one you'd use for any other administrative
task in your Mac account.

If Terminal and Finder are both choking, are you sure the disk itself is okay?
Could there be corruption of some kind?

If you look at the table of language options in VO Utility . Speech, you can
see all the voices that are enabled. Simply remove one to disable it in your
rotor, or add one to enable it.

Sorry, that I don't have. I use a network drive connected to my router, but not

never gives me an error. I don't use my Mac for shared folders on other

After I hit the file utility button, I try and unlock the window and it just
hangs..stays busy for ages.

when I tried to move stuff in the terminal as you instructed, it said
“password” after I typed the sudo mv source destination line, so I retyped
everything with the password and then terminal quit unexpectedly after a little
while when I thought it was actually working! totally frustrating this whole
thing! If all else fails, I can leave the folder where it is, but I really
really want everything in one place, and then the disk where the files were can
be used as a time machine backup disk. *sigh*

2017-10-15 Thread Jeff Berwick
Hi all,

Before I upgraded to High Sierra, I used to be able to go into computers,
expand Network Neighbourhood and access my other computers and time capsules on
my network. However, since High Sierra, I am no longer able to expand Network
Neighbourhood.

Wondering if there is something I need to change in order to use this feature
again or, if there is a way that I can connect to my other computers through
Terminal.

Tia,
Jeff

 Many thanks

 Andrew

You can remove any voices from VoiceOver Utility by unchecking the boxes for
the specific voice. Just choose, custom, as you would if you wanted to add
voices. Once you do this, you won't see the voices in the rotor options.

Re: To update or not to update, that is the question!

2017-10-15 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Donna,

I have been thinking about your issues with navigation. Do you know if it is
the application getting confused when you switch modes or is the map app just
not finding you accurately.

The message "proceed to the route" generally occurs for me when I am in a
parking lot or garage several yards away from a public road. So it generally
should not occur if you start the maps app while stopped on the side of the
road. I believe one of three things is happening:

1. Your clock is off or in some other way your GPS calculated position does not
match where you actually are. Sometimes software updates include updated
databases about the satellites that are used to track location.
2. The roads in your area became incorrectly located with the update. Using
Google Maps or MapQuest app would probably resolve this issue and both apps are
free.
3. When you pause live navigation to get a list of directions and then go back
to live mode. The maps app gets confused by a sudden jump in location, (I have
seen this happen with my public transportation applications). This could also
be resolved by using a non apple navigation app.

One quick test would be to see if MAPS correctly identifies the address of your
home. If it does then I expect it is very unlikely that issue 1 is part of your
problem.

Also, have you determined a pattern of when maps is getting confused? Either in
a specific area or after you perform some actions?

How truly frustrating this must all be.
Hang in there and I am sure things will get better. Though I do have to agree,
except for the fact that Google makes most of its money by selling information
about individuals to advertisers, I find their products very appealing in the
variety and complexity of services.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Auto-mount net drive on boot?

2017-10-15 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Alex,

If you have references around still for how to auto mount smb devices in El
Capitan, I would appreciate a link. Currently my work machine gives an error
every time I login about not being able to find a share. Currently I have been
just ignoring it, but if a calendar alert comes up after this error then it
gets a bit more difficult to get started with work. Hopefully this is something
I can fix myself and don't need the IT department to play with my active
directory entries.

Thanks for any references you have.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: terminal work

2017-10-15 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Ok the essence of this problem is that moving directories across volumes is not
the same as moving directories within a volume.

If you move a directory and it stays on the same virtual disk, then all UNIX is
doing is deleting one entry in a directory and adding that same entry into a
different directory.

If your move is actually across volumes then all the contents have to be copied
and then the original deleted. The safest way to do this is using
cp -R directory1 directory2
*inspect results
rm -R directory1

I believe that there is a mv -R command also, but it will essentially be doing
the two commands I listed above but with out the ability to return to a known
state if for some reason part of the move failed.

The other comments about checking quotes are important also, though I believe
the tab completion in bash will automatically add quotes if necessary.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Re: Hello all:

2017-10-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Simon,

Another way of getting around the volume thing is to reset the PRAM. After it
has been reset, the volume will be back to a level that will be heard by you.
If it's a case of them muting things so that when you restart, you don't know
when to hold down the special keys, I usually just shutdown or force shutdown
the computer so that I'm in control of when it starts.

Finally, you could just fart in the face of everyone who keeps muting the sound
so that it makes your life difficult. They'll soon remember to be more
considerate :).

Hi,

To add to Simon's comments, if you don't hear VO when in the Recovery
partition, you can use VO-cmd-left or three times, then VO-cmd-up to raise the
volume. Don't know for sure if this rotor command has changed in the High
Sierra version of the Recovery partition. If so, then you'll need to add the
shift key to the combination.

Note though that you have to make sure you have the alert volume up
So that means if someone has muted the start up tone on your machine then you
wont hear the tones, you also wont hear the vo speech at the recovery utilities.

As for how this works on the new machines, I can't say as haven't got one to
try, but I know on older machines it works fine as I do this for work all the
time.

Hi,

This seems to depend on a number of factors. Specifically, how many
partitions do you have on this disk? If only two, then your issue is
indeed a problem. If more than two, then I'll explain a few things
that may help.

• Let's say, for argument's sake, that you have three partitions.
Macintosh
HD, HD-2 and HD-3.
• using Disk Utility or Terminal, you can determine the disk
identifier for these volumes.
• For fun, I'll say that they came up as disk0s2, disk0s3 and disk0s4
respectively.
• So, if you remove disk0s3, you can easily expand Macintosh HD
(dis0s2) into the free space provided by the removal of disk0s3.
• But, f disk0s4 is the partition that was removed, then your
frustrations begin. Because disk0s4 is sequentially after disk0s3,
you cannot combine
disk0s2 with disks4. The reason for this is that disk0s3 is
logically "in the way" of any expansion.
• Confirm the disk identifiers while in Disk Utility by selecting the
partition from the table and the last item on the screen will display
the disk identifier, such as disk3s3.
• In Terminal, use "distil list" to see all the disk info you'll ever
need.
• This gets a little more complicated if you have a Fusion drive or
or if things are formatted in the new APFS format. Still possible,
but some different arguments.

With all this said, if your partition map has it so that your free
space is not directly connected to the Macintosh HD partition, then
the only way you could manipulate things to your favour would be to
backup or copy the data from the other partition to a totally
different target, remove that partition, then expand the Macintosh HD
into the free space and finally re-create a partition for this data
to return to. There are also methods within Terminal that can allow
merging of partitions, but the same restrictions are applied with
respect to identifier numbering.

I hope this makes some sort of sense.

Hi,

Yes you can use the same method to make sure the destination or target path is
correct. Just be sure that there is a space between the source path and the
target path. Regarding the stuff after the Join button in my original
response, most of that is immaterial so I didn't bother mentioning it. The
"Open Directory Utility" button is just before the Cancel button. Once the
Directory Utility app is open, you need to unlock the padlock and you can
ignore most things in the window as you only need to enable the root user from
within the Edit menu.

Hope you're getting somewhere with this.

Re: Twitterrific returns to the Mac as a modern Twitter client w/ themes, muffle syncing, more

2017-10-15 Thread Alex Hall
It has more capabilities, with a few missing features, as I detailed in my last
message. Yes, it can't yet mute, but that's being worked on and should be out
soon. I don't know that it's more user-friendly, but it certainly does things
Night Owl can't (full URLs, quoted tweets, and search/muffle/position syncing
with Twitterrific for iOS come to mind).

I tried using the recovery tools, however the disk partition seems to
be completely corrupted... I don't have an installation USB and yeah.
I have to use a Sierra one which I am currently creating under

Hi,

To add to Simon's comments, if you don't hear VO when in the Recovery
partition, you can use VO-cmd-left or three times, then VO-cmd-up to raise the
volume. Don't know for sure if this rotor command has changed in the High

shift key to the combination.

Note though that you have to make sure you have the alert volume up
So that means if someone has muted the start up tone on your machine then you
wont hear the tones, you also wont hear the vo speech at the recovery utilities.

As for how this works on the new machines, I can't say as haven't got one to
try, but I know on older machines it works fine as I do this for work all the

partitions do you have on this disk? If only two, then your issue is
indeed a problem. If more than two, then I'll explain a few things
that may help.

• Let's say, for argument's sake, that you have three partitions.
Macintosh
HD, HD-2 and HD-3.
• using Disk Utility or Terminal, you can determine the disk
identifier for these volumes.
• For fun, I'll say that they came up as disk0s2, disk0s3 and disk0s4

• But, f disk0s4 is the partition that was removed, then your

you cannot combine
disk0s2 with disks4.

RE: Clean Install

2017-10-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Ys those instructions are pretty right.

If you use the recovery console and start up disk utilities then highlight
macintosh hd and erraise that volume,
Don't erraise anything else or you cause yourself trouble.

Then once erraised close disk utilities and go to the reinstall os option in
the utilities list and it will install your os as a clean installation from the
os recovery partition
The only choice you really have to make is where to install the os to and that
should only be one drive possible.

Good luck.

Dear List I want to do a clean install of High Sierra. I have never done one
before, which is embarrassing as I have been using a mac for years. Can you do
a clean install direct from the recovery partition without an external drive.
On apple support it gives instructions for how to wipe your mac prior to sale,
boot into the recovery partition, erase Macintosh HD, and then use the
reinstall utility etc. Is this a clean install. I would be grateful for any
advice you can give me.

Kind Regards, Lee

 Good news for Twitterrific lovers.

Twitterrific returns to the Mac as a modern Twitter client w/ themes,
 muffle syncing, more
 9to5Mac / Zac Hall

The Iconfactory has officially launched Twitterrific 5 for Mac after a
successful Kickstarter campaign for Project Phoenix earlier this year.
Twitterrific for macOS is a totally new version of the Twitter client with
a modern design that includes a dark theme, visual customization,
muffle/mute/timeline syncing to the iOS app, and more.

Twitterrific for Mac has been effectively dead for the last few years as
the market shifted to iOS where Twitterrific 5 has experimented with
in-app purchases to remove ads and unlock features.

With Project Phoenix, however, The Iconfactory used crowdfunding to ensure
demand for a modern Mac client before devoting months of development work
to the project. Ultimately, the Kickstarter campaign received $108,346
 from 2,852 backers.

For users of Twitterrific for iOS, this launch means there’s finally a
modern version of their favorite Twitter client for the desktop again. But
even if you’re not yet a Twitterrific user, the interest in the new app
existing is both good news for the Mac as a platform as well as the Mac
Twitter client competition (which Twitter tries to prevent without
 maintaining its own app well).

Twitterrific lets you choose between two themes (light and dark), a
handful of fonts including Menlo (shown below), nine text sizes ranging

Re: Speech Rate

2017-10-15 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi. If you're trying to adjust speech rate on the Mac, the command to adjust
speech attributes has changed. Now in addition to pressing VO+Command, the
shift key has to be added. So to change speech rate, press
VO+Command+Shift+Right arrow to go to rate and then up and down arrows to
adjust it. HTH.

Re: apple tv 4K

2017-10-15 Thread David Chittenden
In addition to Tim's comments, in most states in the US, it is necessary to add
sales tax to the stated amount. There are only 2 or 3 states which do not add
sales tax. Otherwise, sales tax can be up to 10% or more.

In NZ, GST is 15%, and it is almost always included in the published price.
When in the US, people know they will be paying more than the quoted price. In
Australia, GST is 10%, and it is also included in the quoted price.

Finally, as the products are from another country, it is necessary to look at
the exchange rates. In many cases, once these additional factors are
calculated, one notices that the prices are actually rather similar.
