Mac, into iTunes, or the TV app, VO-shift-m on the title to bring up
the Contextual menu, then select "Mark As Watched".  This will change
it on your Apple TV as well.  I did some reading and, supposedly, this
is possible on the Apple TV itself by long pressing the Select button,
that's the trackpad thing on the Siri remote.  After long pressing, a
menu is supposed to appear where you can choose to mark it as watched.
I couldn't make it work with VO though, and my wife and daughter are
out right now so can't verify if that works without VO.  I did read
from about five years ago people having this problem, but haven't
found any similar posts lately.  You'd think that if it was happening
five years ago that Apple would have fixed it by now.  Maybe not I guess.
Well, enough rambling.  Sorry for the long post without a real

Re: Networking my printer, can I go through my Mac?

2020-04-10 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Tim and others,

Success, My sighted helper was a bit more agreeable and took her time.
We googled the Brother printer and setting up wifi. They don’t seem to make
this very easy. She found a source that talked her through the layers on the
touch screen and she was finally able to enter the wifi password.

After that all devices found the printer and printed easily.

I didn’t need to really do anything else.

I did update my software on my Mac but I don’t think that had anything to do
with it. I also downloaded the brother printer app on my phone. It may be
useful to me but I don’t think it was needed to make the printer available as
other devices found it without the app.

I sure wish these devices had talking menus or at lease an app or computer
access that let us do all the functions from an accessible place.

Still, the tips here got me headed in the right direction and I was able to
quickly move past my attempt and into the next place to try.

I’m very appreciative of the info here.

And, a bonus is I should be able to use the printer from my other Mac.

Thanks folks.

Re: IOS delete a contacts group

2020-04-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I don't believe that there is a specific method by which you can delete the
group on the iPhone. I'm not even sure how you would create a contact group on
the iPhone. So, basically, to get rid of it, I believe that you'll need to get
it migrated to your iCloud contacts so that you can use your Mac to delete it.
So, to accomplish this, I'd do the following:

• go to Settings, Your Name, iCloud, then uncheck the box beside Contacts.

This should bring up a dialog where it asks if you want to download your
contacts to the iPhone or just leave them in iCloud.

• I suggest you leave them in iCloud and have them removed from your iPhone.

This should then only have that group and/or any other locally stored contacts
on the iPhone, and all your important ones will be up in iCloud. You can
confirm by going to your Mac and checking what contacts are there.

• now, back out of iCloud all the way to the top level of Settings, then get to
the Home screen.

• wait a few minutes. While waiting, check that all the contacts on your Mac
are the way you want them.

The waiting process is meant to ensure that everything has time to be removed
from the iPhone.

• go back into Settings, Your Name, iCloud and check the box for Contacts.

If everything is right in the world, and the stars are aligned, it should ask
if you wish to merge the contacts currently on your iPhone with those in
iCloud. Your answer would be affirmative. This would, therefore, add any
currently local contacts and contact groups to your iCloud contact database.
Give it a few minutes, then go to your Mac and see if the offending group is
present within the Contacts app on your Mac. If yes, delete it.

This should do the trick. Note that I use the word "should". That's my catch
word so that if it doesn't work, I can still save face.

Hello David.

I did actually have problems using the word application on the Mac yesterday as

I don’t know if there is a braill e cursor, a bit like jaws, as sometimes when

Re: Converting a USB flatbed scanner to a Wireless Scanner

Hi,

Adding to Janina's excellent, yet disappointing note. Besides Epson's
proprietary software, I doubt that a 15 year old machine would accept the
wireless communication through the router.

Re: Networking my printer, can I go through my Mac?

2020-04-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Eric,

Is your printer AirPrint capable? If no, then you won't be able to see it with
your iOS/iPadOS devices. The sharing method I outlined should work fine for
other Macs, but will not make a non-AirPrint ready printer sharable to
iOS/iPadOS.

My wife handles the scanning wirelessly from her iMac using the Brother iPrint

I recently upgraded my wife’s iMac to Catalina, and installed the 64-bit

Hi, Eric:

Especially if you have a wired ethernet port on your Brother printer,
you can happily share it across all your networked devices. This is
exactly what I do with mine, currently an HL2395DW.

Use Safari to access the relevant resources on support.brother.com
. You
will likely need to install drivers that support your specific model.

I also use the mac address of my printer's ethernet port to dynamically
assign it the same IP address on every boot which allows me to add the
machine a globally accessible domain name.

Note that this also supports wifi access as you probably are providing
wifi via your router.

I have found things work pretty much as expected. The exception for me
is the scan function as mine is a multi-function device. I can scan from
my Mac, but I can't seem to save the results of my scan into a file.
That's annoying, but I get around it by using the corresponding Brother
application on my Android phone, Iprint and Scan, where scanning and
saving works as expected.

Best,

Janina

Re: Ios 13.4.1

2020-04-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi Andrew,

Yes, you certainly have occasion to be frustrated. One thing to note, Apple
Accessibility is simply a support line. They are not the developers, nor do
they have a direct line to the developer team. They can, though, escalate
items easier than you or I, so I do understand your frustration. I will pass
your concern on to an Apple SE or two to see if they can direct it to the
relevant team members to see if it can be addressed sooner rather than later.
Regarding how easy the problem is to fix, I can't be sure other than to say
that it's often easier from the outside than it is from the inside when it
comes to lengthy and complicated code.

I have been beta testing as well and have been reporting this problem for over
4 years as well ever since High Sierra. I have recently been on the phone to
Apple Accessibility begging them to fix this. I don’t think it is very hard to
correct this problem and yet they haven’t. The latest Catalina beta has
retained this bug too. Every time there’s a new release of beta for testing, I
send a bug report and it’s beginning to feel like a joke. I don’t quite know
what to do because one day I will have to give up my Sierra running laptop
either because it fails or when the OS becomes unsupported. So hence I’m
playing around with Windows again very very reluctantly.

Not to mention the cost of the technology. The money I’ve spent & keep on
spending on it would cover a mortgage payments for a modest house. So yes, I’m
fed up I can’t use the Greek voice after 4 years of reporting the bug. & yes,
I’ve paid for Windows10 so that I can have a Greek voice that reads text
correctly in case Apple’s decided Greek speakers outside Greece don’t have to
be supported. I’m privileged though to have work & income but if I hadn’t?
God help me then.

Every modern operating system has accessibility bugs, unfortunately.
That’s why I sometimes have to switch operating systems just to get work

Fortunately, the laptop with Windows installed and the MacBook Pro are on

Re: How do I move a HomePod to a different room in my house in the home app?

2020-04-10 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

i just tested this and it stuck for me. I did the following:

• open the Home app on iPhone.
• Double-tap the Edit button.
• Double-tap the HomePod.
• Swipe to find the room that it's assigned to, just after the name field.
Double-tap on this button.
• Swipe to locate the picker and flick up/down until you find the desired room.
• Swipe left to the Close button and double-tap it.
• Double-tap on the Done button.

That should do it. If this is what you've been doing, then you're app is being
stupid. Restart the device and restart the HomePod or HomePods to see if they
behave better after the restart.

HTH.

Later...

Do you often change your eyes or hands

When the answer is of course no, I ask then why would you expect someone

Its unrealistic, impractical, and counterproductive to the concept of

Every modern operating system has accessibility bugs, unfortunately. That’s why
I sometimes have to switch operating systems just to get work done. For
example, I’ve switched from Windows to Mac to complete a task in the last week
or two due to accessibility issues on the Windows side. Fortunately, the
laptop with Windows installed and the MacBook Pro are on the same desk, so it’s
really easy to move from one to the other. Of course, I really shouldn’t have
to move between two computers just to do my work properly, but that’s how it is
at the moment. This isn’t the place to discuss application and screen reader
crashes on Windows, or accessibility regressions there either, or having to
switch between Windows screen readers to work around bugs. In my experience,
the Mac has had its share of accessibility problems as well, and I’ve been
using it since 2014. Some applications are more accessible under Windows than
under Mac OS, and vice versa.

I have Windows 10, Mac OS, Linux and iOS here, so I believe I can make fair
comparisons. As it stands, I think the practical advice is to have multiple
operating systems available and to switch between them, as the task requires,
to work around accessibility problems. I should be able to choose two operating
systems – one for a laptop/desktop and the other for mobile, and use those
exclusively, but I don’t envisage that being effective from an accessibility
perspective for me within the short term or even the medium term. It just isn’t
workable, given the quality problems across multiple platforms. iOS is adequate
for my mobile needs, but the desktop/laptop situation is more complex – and
that’s where I’m doing most of the work, and

Operating system accessibility (was RE: Ios 13.4.1)

2020-04-10 Thread 'Jason White' via MacVisionaries
The short answer in my view is that, in general, the people who develop screen
readers, support for accessibility within operating systems, and support for
accessibility in at least some applications are hard-working, knowledgeable,
and strive to get it right. Unfortunately, whether they work for multinational
corporations or for small organizations, they tend to be under-resourced. Too
many software developers writing applications and application components don't
know how to implement accessibility support well - or don't give it sufficient
priority.
The result is that there are too many bugs and rough edges, and this won't
change until there are stronger policies in place requiring higher quality, as
well as more software developers working on accessibility issues effectively.
I don't think for a moment that this situation is acceptable. I think it's a
policy issue, not a technical one, ultimately.

Jason,
You raise an issue that frankly baffles me.
why is it not possible for an individual to choose a single operating
system and have their needs met from an accessibility standpoint?
why is it an acceptable situation to need multiple devices in various
systems to complete tasks.
It certainly was not always the case.
I can respect having a laptop or desktop and also a phone or tablet, but those
should work in harmony with each other if that makes sense. and the
accessibility should be consistent on those devices regardless of program being
used.
I have no idea where the concept of creating a single program to manage a
single task then incorporating accessibility in came from, perhaps the
windows arena.
Still as someone pointed out earlier in this thread Google believes that
controlling punctuation should not be something a user can do on the Android
platform. Yet text to speech is not a screen reader, with google failing to
understand this a major concern.
as you note, most of the individuals meeting with accessibility will not have
the technological ability to figure things out..so will simply believe access
is an impossibility in general.
However such complacency about what access is expected to do in part started
with the population benefiting from that access, not demanding that a screen
reader tool work uniformly across the board much the way in theory the physical
functions the adaptive tool enhances work in the human body.
Kare
Who frankly wonders on average how many machines an individual using adaptive
technology owns?

Re: Networking my printer, can I go through my Mac?

2020-04-10 Thread Brad Snyder
I have a Brother HL2700DW Multi-function Printer/Scanner, and my experiences
are pretty much the same as Janina’s.
My wife is sighted, so we were able to use the touchpad to connect the printer
wirelessly to our network. I am able to access the printer from all computers,
(both Mac and Windows) on the network. I can also print from my iPhone and
iPad.
My wife handles the scanning wirelessly from her iMac using the Brother iPrint
and Scan application, and says she has no problem saving a scanned file on her
computer.
I recently upgraded my wife’s iMac to Catalina, and installed the 64-bit
version of the Brother iPrint and Scan software on her Mac, and my wife
commented that she is now able to scan in color, which was not the case with
the earlier version.

Hi, Eric:

Especially if you have a wired ethernet port on your Brother printer,
you can happily share it across all your networked devices. This is
exactly what I do with mine, currently an HL2395DW.

Use Safari to access the relevant resources on support.brother.com. You
will likely need to install drivers that support your specific model.

Best,

Janina

2020-04-10 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
Hello Maurice,

Have you tried working with tables in a Word document on the mac side? It used
to be impossible so I was wondering whether you had any experience of tables in
Word on the mac. Another word processing app on the Mac, Nisus Writer, was
very promising but for the tables again. It seems to be one of those features
whose implementation with accessibility in mind has always been a problem.

Re: Ios 13.4.1

2020-04-10 Thread 'Andrew Lamanche' via MacVisionaries
I think frustration sometimes makes us speak to generally. My ongoing
complaint about Apple’s accessibility indifference to an issue I’ve been
reporting for over 4 years is their ignoring thus far the Greek voice bug where
the Greek voice, be it native to Apple or infovox ivox instead of reading text
properly, spells it out, which renders it useless. I think 4 years is a very
long time and I am having to keep one of my macs on Sierra in order to be able
to work and enjoy the greek speech. This is really beginning to irritate me.

Best wishes

Andrew

The new version is a bit smaller and thinner and lighter. More plastic. One
major improvement is the built in rechargable battery, which can be charged
with a lightning cable.
Concerning functionality its the same.

Ronald

Re: Converting a USB flatbed scanner to a Wireless Scanner

2020-04-10 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Dave:

I believe you're going to be disappointed on this one. It's not a matter
of a hardware device or dongle. It's a matter of software device
drivers, and Epson is very proprietary about their's.

I'm expecting to pick up a flatbed scanner sometime in the coming
months, and I will be looking to deploy it via my router for access from
any device on my network, but I will not be looking at Epson products
for that functionality.

Best,

Janina

Re: Networking my printer, can I go through my Mac?

2020-04-10 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Tim is right about how things are supposed to work. Unfortunately, for
whatever reason, Brother wants you to do things there way.

You get the same result in the end. It's just setup that's different.

Best,

Janina

Re: Networking my printer, can I go through my Mac?

2020-04-10 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries

2020-04-10 Thread joseph hodge
I find that I use screen readers and treat them as they are all tools in the
toolbox the more I know the better off I’ll be. However this being said it’s so
maddening win one aspect to an application or website just doesn’t work on one
operating system and then I throw it on something else it doesn’t work and then
I go to the third option and it works fine. I was playing with an app yesterday
that works the best on Chromebook who would’ve guessed? It just sucks that I
have to pick and choose the operating systems to get the best results for that
particular application why can’t I just use the application the way I like on
any operating system I like?
