Hi Anders, No, stuff is labeled, but the interface is very clunky, there’s no doubt about that. But when a phone call comes in, say from your flute teacher, you can just hit tab and then VO-Space to answer the call with voice only. I think you can just press Enter to answer with video, but I don’t usually do that, so I may not be right about that. Hi Simon. It’s not bad on the IOS devices. But three years ago, you could at least install Skype on the Mac without a lot of going to and fro in each and every section of what is your user name or password etc. I have no idea how I installed it on the Mac. At least I have now the hang of getting an application copied from the DMG volume and put it in the applications folder as I use to have a lot of trouble understanding that one but a break from the Mac must have helped! Mark on the Latest Version of Skype for Mac
Hello Everyone, Some time ago, I thought I read on this list that the more recent versions of Skype (by Microsoft) were not terribly voiceover friendly. Well, during the past week, I've had occasion to use the latest version of Skype on my Mac and I must say that I am extremely pleased with what Microsoft has done. I find the app completely VoiceOver friendly, easy to use, easy to understand, and best of all, containing some accessibility features geared towards those of us who are low vision. For example, I particularly like the new color themes one can select to vary display contrast. Also, I was delighted to discover that the Mac version of the app now mirrors the layout of Skype for iOS making it easier, in my opinion, to switch between the two platforms. So, if you haven't used the latest version of Skype for Mac with VoiceOver, perhaps you should consider giving it a try. RE: Skype for Mac
Hi Chris, Skype for business works in conjunction with a server that you authenticate against to access it and it gives you things through outlook such as is a work colleague at their desk before you transfer a call to them via skype for business, Voicemail, call forwarding to mobiles or other numbers within your voip system. Basically it is a business system formily it was known as lynk which was the Microsoft phone system, And it gives you built in phone services like voicemail call transferring, caller id although that is in skype, intergration with outlook or exchange and the global address book within exchange Where as skype you only see who you have in your contacts and or who you search or make a call to. Skype for business is really just a voip phone system. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Christopher-Mark Gilland Sent: Wednesday, 24 August 2016 10:48 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Skype for Mac What's the difference in Skype VS. Re: Skype for Mac
Skype For Business was formerly Microsoft Lync 2013, before which it was Microsoft Lync 2010, and before that Microsoft Office Communicator. Recent versions of this evolving application have appeared visually more like Skype, though under the hood they have remained more like Lync. From an accessibility standpoint, I consider them completely different applications. Another difference is that Skype For Business (SFB) requires a server to be set up and is thus generally found in office environments, where the server is set up by the company for the employees to use. Skype is more decentralized and requires no such administrative setup. Continuing with the office-centric paradigm, SFB can interface with Outlook, calendars, etc., to create a more seamless environment for managing contacts, meetings, record keeping, and so on. Skype can interface with contact lists, but to my knowledge not anything for managing email, meetings/appointments, etc. Hth. Had massive problems joining a conference call there as well. Not sure what’s going on, but hope they fix it soon! Re: Skype for Mac
Hi E.T. This is Helga! How are you? I use skype for my Mac sometimes! How can I update my skype? and how do I know I have the oldest version? And one last question, how can I refresh my conversations? It looks like to me when I don't use my skype for my Mac for a long time that my recent conversations don't appear on it. I usually use my skype app on my apple devices, but when I go to check my conversations on my Mac, they don't appear there! Do you have any idea what can cause that? I'm just wondering! I look forward in hearing from you soon. Thanks and God bless! Helga Schreiber Member of National Federation of the Blind and Florida Association of Blind Students. Re: Skype for mac
Actually, Pam, it does make sense. I've boobooed and done this before myself. It happens to the best of us. And BTW, stop feeling like quote unquote an idiot! As I said, this isn't a big deal. I bet I know what happened, and if I am correct, this is extremely easy to fix. What I bet probably happened is, you probably accidentally removed the app from your applications directory. In doing this however, you didn't remove the icon from your dock. So, when you hit vo+D, probably what's happenning is, it's trying to open the Skype.app file from your applications directory, but because it's no longer there, nothing is happenning. So, therefore, to fix this issue, what you'll want to do is to download Skype again, copy the skype.app file from the download dmg, paste it into your applications directory like normal, go to your dock, find the Skype icon, vo+shift+M on it, select options, then remove from dock. Now, finally, go back over to your applications directory, find skype.app, then hit ctrl+command+shift+T to add it again back to your dock. Now, you'll have a fresh icon that properly references the skype.app file. Now, if you go to your dock, and hit vo+space, or return on Skype, it should launch with no issues at all. Re: Skype for Mac
Hi, when you receive a call, you should get a dialog pop up, with answer being the default button, so simply pressing return will answer. The way I use Skype is to use VO-J to jump me between the table and other parts of the window. So I interact with the table and find where it says contacts, then VO-J jumps me straight into my contacts list and interacts. To change which contacts you see, uninteract and VO left to select whichever radio button you want, then VO-shift-right to get back to the list. VO-J from the contact list gets you back to the table again. When you get a contact request, find it in the table, then use your item chooser or VO-right until you find the accept button. I love how Skype works on Mac, find it really fast and efficient. There's a table on the far left; interact with it, vi-down to recent, and under that you will find any pending contact requests. When you get a call, a dialog appears; pressing enter will answer it. To hang up, go to the Skype app and use cmd-shift-h, and cmd-shift-m to toggle the mute status of your microphone on and off. Hi, Further to what Alex has said, you can see your list of contacts by interacting with the table on the left, focusing on contacts, uninteract and move to the right with vo right arrow. Keep doing this until you find your list of contacts. That's how I do it anyway. There's no short cut for answering a call which is a shame, but there is for hanging up (command shift h). Re: Skype on Mac: what should I know?
I use Skype on the Mac all the time. While there are no accessibility concerns, I would say that some of the command patterns are a little lugubrious, involving many keystrokes to accomplish seemingly simple action. Other than that, however, it is perfectly accessible in music, and as I said, I use it all the time. Re: Skype on Mac: what should I know?
Great, thanks. Hopefully the options I use will be in the menus, so I can assign my own keyboard shortcuts to them. Well, I'll find out soon. Still, I'm glad there are no major problems; I see Skype come up on here every so often, but never followed the conversations because I never used it before. I thought, due to its coming up so much, that there must be problems with it. I'm glad I was wrong! Re: Skype on Mac: what should I know?
I actually think Skype is much better accessibility wise on the mac however I do admit to using the client on the other platform but require third party software in order for it to be fully accessible. not so on the mac. One nice feature in the mac client is the ability to use the system voice to announce various events on Skype. Re: Skype on Mac: what should I know?
Vo+J is your friend when accessing chat history and when going from table to table. Also, keep in mind that when you're sitting in a chat window on skype, it won't make the sound to let you know a new message has come in. So you'll probably want to command+tab away from the application while waiting for a new message, then skype will make the alert. Other than that, and if you remember to be out of the application when waiting for a message, it's a pretty good experience. Have fun, and shout if you have questions! What a mess in Skype for Mac.
Hello. I've switched on my I Mac this evening and started downloading what I need. Opened Skype and signed in with my Microsoft ID and what a mess Skype is. I thought the I phone Skype was messy but this? It's clunky. I can't always find my online contacts and when I do, the contacts are not in a list instead you have to vo right and vo left. I don't know what I'll make of iTunes! Kawal. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: What a mess in Skype for Mac.
Nope. Not really a mess at all. Look just to the right of the tool bar. You'll notice that it's all organized in tables. Contacts is the third table. You want then to organize by online contacts. That's done with the radio buttons just to the right of the table. Another thing you want to do is go in to Skype's view menu and set it to show contacts by list instead of by picture. Jus a few points to get you started. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray Still a very proud and happy Mac and Iphone user! Re: What a mess in Skype for Mac.
Actually, I think skype on the mac is more accessible than windows. After the tool bar, you will have a table, interact with that and you can select what shows on the rest of the screen. Re: What a mess in Skype for Mac.
Skype's layout is a wonderful example of why it's helpful to be able to visualize the screen and where things are on it. Vo is making lots of sounds to tell you this table is below the screen in relation to the tool bar, but this table is right next to it, separated by a vertical bar,, and results of these tables appears below your current position in the window. If you start to visualize where in the process you're changing which parameters, it starts to make some more sense. • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Skype opinions: Mac or iPhone
Hi Christine I don't know of any tutorials for skype on the iPhone. When you are in the contacts list, double tap on the person's name. Then look for a voice call or video call button and double tap that. If the person is not online you won't be able to call, so make sure you pick someone who actually is online. You can also choose to display just the online contacts. I can't give you more precise instructions at the moment because my phone is not with me right now. But it's really not difficult on the iPhone. I wonder if you are trying to call someone who is not online. Just a thought. Re: Skype opinions: Mac or iPhone
Hi Yes you can call any phone if you have purchased skype credit. I've not done that from the app, but I was assuming Christine was wanting to call skype to skype without the credit. Re: Skype opinions: Mac or iPhone
You were correct; I was trying to call Skype to Skype. Now I'm trying to set Skype up on my Mac, because I was asked to interview on an Internet radio show via Skype, and I was told that using the iPhone will produce too much echoing for that sort of thing. But I'm having a heck of a time. The set-up guide is showing empty html, and when I just opened Skype to take the tour, and clicked on set-up, there is no real guidance of any kind -- I'm hearing things like no microphone and play which plays the Skype noise, but attempts to do anything with the pop-up menus results in a very odd, rapid bunch of what sounds like numbers, but I cannot interact to make any choices. I also have not the slightest idea how to test the camera for video calls, and as I have mentioned earlier, I can't seem to find any information on using this from a blind person's point of view. Re: Skype opinions: Mac or iPhone
Hi In my opinion, the iPhone is easier than the Mac for skype. The mac involves a bit of interacting with things and moving to different areas of the screen. It's not difficult on the Mac, don't get me wrong. I just think skype on the iPhone is really easy. Good luck. skype for mac and listening to voicemail
Dear listers, I just noticed that I have voicemail from skype. I turned it on, and I thought I would get a notification inside Skype if a new voicemail arrives. However, I now see that, on my spambox, I have a message from skype saying I received a new voicemail from a list member here. I looked into skype to find how to play voicemails, but I don't know how to do it. Closest I got was in the history list. At the end of September, I got this voicemail message, but trying to bring up a context menu on a history list item won't let me listen to the voicemail in question. Once I know from email that I have a message, how do you play it? Paul. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: skype for mac and listening to voicemail
Find the name of the person who sent the voice mail; it will either be in the the table right below the tool bar or, if it's very old, in the history list table. Select it and press Enter to exit the tables and go back to the main window. Find the HTML content frame and interact with it. VO right until you find the play or stop voice mail button. Click it. That should start the playback. How you delete them, I have no idea, and I shudder to think how many voice mails are stored somewhere that I don't need any more... I've had similar problems, it sounds like the touch tones send, but the system doesn't respond, and after entering several numbers, the touch tone feature no longer works. I don't know, originally I liked skype 5 better, but the more I use it, the more I'm seeing lots of small problems that when combined make me think that perhaps skype 2.8 was a bit better. Once you enter the dial pad, you will notice that the virtual keypad is layed out like a touch tone phone keypad. You just navigate to the digits you wish to press and use VO+space to press them. I have noticed, however, that with the latest versions of Skype, touch tones to seem to be lingering quite long when pressed; and, I have recently had issues calling my own land line. Voice mail on Skype for Mac and the Iphone 4.
Dear All. I had a voicemail on my Skype application which I managed to listen to in the end after playing with the History items on the Mac. My problems are these on the Mac Book Pro and my Iphone 4. First of all, even though my Voice Mail is active on my I Phone 4, I cannot play messages left on Skype Voicemail as I have not been able to find voice mail button on my I phone when in the Skype application. So I'd like to know how to access Skype's Voice Mail if I'm out and about with my Iphone 4? I don't take my Mac Book Pro every where. Secondly, on my Iphone 4 and my Mac Book Pro, and my Skype, I cannot click the record button so to record my own message so it defaults to the message which plays if you have not recorded the message. I have tried pressing voice over and the mouse cursor but it does not work all the time as the voice cursor is already highlighting two buttons but you don't know what the buttons are. I am not on the Iphone list to ask any one these things relating to the Iphone. So I am asking my questions here. I hope the moderators will excuse this as I do not post often to the list. Does anyone else have these problems on the I phone and on their Mac Book or any other Mac? If so, has anyone had a work around or does anyone know if any of the companies are going to fix these accessibility problems? I suspect these problems are not there if you do not use Voice Over on both products. Thanks again and any help on this would be appreciated. Kawal.
