Hi Anne,

I could duplicate this behaviour in a german Textedit from the menue Format /

Could you share with who you shared this at Apples or in what way? I only know

Re: Keeping a journal, both on Mac and iPhone?

2015-01-21 Thread Christina C.
Sarai,

If you are truly interested in a powerful journaling app than I personally
believe the price could be worth it if Journaling is important. Get on their
mailing lists and they often have specials on their products but you might have
to be patient. They especially have the specials for certain holidays or
events. I got both macJournal for iPhone and Mac for half off. The price was
worth it to me for the plans I have. :) Fingers crossed on the syncing. That is
the part that boggles my mind and I am afraid to sync incorrectly and for
example have the most up to date version on my iPhone and then go to sync and
have it accidentally replace the older version with the newer version. I
believe there are two ways to sync. One is through drop box and the other is
through macJournal itself. I do not know if they have added iCloud drive
support. I do not think so but like I said, this really confuses me and I can’t
wrap my brain around it. Once I understand it, I will happily start journaling.
I really really want to understand this syncing so that I can Journal when out
and about on my iPhone. Often I want to make a quick Journal on my iPhone to
note an important moment before I forget. I just want to make sure I understand
how to sync first. :)

 Hi all,
Today, a major (paid) update was released for Audio Hijack Pro, version 3.
This version makes constructing recording flows far easier, among other
usability improvements… At least according to the review I read. I don't own
the app, but I've heard a lot about it. Now that Soundflower isn't working
on Yosemite, and hasn't been updated in a couple years, it might be time for
me to look into Audio Hijack again. Before I plunk down any money, though, I
have a few questions for anyone who uses this app.

First, is this new version accessible? I know it's early days, but maybe
someone tested it, or just got it, or it's been a few days since I sent this
and now you know? It's worrisome to me that the new interface is so visual,
and I wonder if the developers included VoiceOver support.

Second, how does it do with recording VoiceOver? That's the biggest use for
me: recording VoiceOver on the Mac as well as input from a microphone. If it
can't do that, it's not very useful for my situation.

Third, is there a way to record line in on a Macbook Air, while monitoring
somehow? I'd like to record audio from my iPhone, but also speak into a
microphone. Perhaps there's a way to do this with Quicktime's new ability to
 record iOS screencasts?

Thank you for any information or ideas you might have.

BT keyboard stops working on iMac

2015-01-21 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

A few times a week, after my iMac has gone to sleep, when I go to get back on
something weird happens with the keyboard. Basically, everything except VO
plus arrow keys and Cmd-Tab stops working. I’ve tried turning VO on and off,
I’ve tried turning quickNav on and off, but so far the only way to get out of
this mode is to force the Mac to shut down and then reboot. Anyone know what’s
going on here? And anyone know of an easier way to get my keyboard back? This
never happens on my MBA, so I’m wondering if it has something to do with the
bluetooth keyboard?
Thanks,

wish to put it, such as an external HD with more space. Now, when you go to
open iTunes, it will say that it can’t find the iTunes Library at which time
you locate the copied iTunes folder from the dialog and click Choose. This
will automatically fix everything and life will be good. The only concern, is
that you must have the external source turned on when starting iTunes,
otherwise, it will bring up this dialog again.

HTH.

Are there the ability to do this from the dock contextual menu also?

Re: Using a BrailleNote Apex with an iPhone 4S

2015-01-21 Thread Mike Busboom
Hi. Powering down the iPhone and doing a hardware reset on the Apex was the
ticket. Thank you very much for your input.

Do you know where I can find a list of BrailleNote keyboard commands to invoke
the VO commands from the BN qwerty keyboard.

At least, is there a command that can be invoked so that while reading a Kindle
or iBook, using the advance bar will scroll the display through what is being
read?

Again,you were very helpful. Thanks!

Re: Using a BrailleNote Apex with an iPhone 4S

2015-01-21 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi Mike,

I'll try this again because I checked what you meant by my message being cut
off.

1. The iPhone needs to be off totally: The sequence is to turn on the Apex
first, set it in terminal mode and make sure that bluetooth is turned on by
pressing the letter B.
2. Now, open the iPbone: Go to settings blucsooth and make sure it is also
turned on.
3. Swipe down (one finger swipe to the right) until you hear Apex.
4. Do a single double tap on the pair button.
Note: I change the typing mode to standard, so I can use a split double tapp to
quickly input the code and catch the pair button. The pair button is in the
right hand corner just under the battery percentage.
5. The code that Sarah gave you is correct of 4 zeros.

In using the above method, I usually can pair my Apex in 1-2 tries. Once the
Apex is paired, you will need to turn on the apex first, with the iPhone turned
off. Then turn on the phone. It may take a few seconds for the Apex braille
display to respond, but it will. HTH.

Bast,
Eileen

Hi!
Last time i mailed them they were aware of some accessibility issues.
So i guess and hope its accessible.

 Hi all,
Today, a major (paid) update was released for Audio Hijack Pro, version 3.
This version makes constructing recording flows far easier, among other
usability improvements… At least according to the review I read. I don't own
the app, but I've heard a lot about it. Now that Soundflower isn't working on
Yosemite, and hasn't been updated in a couple years, it might be time for me
to look into Audio Hijack again.

Re: Changing iTunes location

2015-01-21 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
You need to start iTunes while holding down the option key. I believe you can
use commandoption-downArrow todo this, but I am not positive right now. Both
iTunes and iPhoto will prompt you for a library location when double clicking
the mouse while holding down the option key. I expect if you completely remove
your iTunes library folder it will also prompt you for the location of the
library.

Are there the ability to do this from the dock contextual menu also?

What about making a second journal just as a text? That way, you can play with

events. I got both macJournal for iPhone and Mac for half off. The price was
worth it to me for the plans I have. :) Fingers crossed on the syncing. That
is the part that boggles my mind and I am afraid to sync incorrectly and for
example have the most up to date version on my iPhone and then go to sync and
have it accidentally replace the older version with the newer version. I
believe there are two ways to sync. One is through drop box and the other is
through macJournal itself. I do not know if they have added iCloud drive
support. I do not think so but like I said, this really confuses me and I
can’t wrap my brain around it. Once I understand it, I will happily start
journaling. I really really want to understand this syncing so that I can
Journal when out and about on my iPhone. Often I want to make a quick Journal
on my iPhone to note an important moment before I forget. I just want to make
sure I understand how to sync first. :)

time you sync, you need to enter a passcode which appears on the phone and

The iOS app supports multiple journals and, so far, has been very easy for

Re: Any disadvantages with file volt?

2015-01-21 Thread Grant Hardy
I’m a proponent of using FileVault. Depending on what model of Mac you have,
when you turn on the machine you can press CMD+F5 to either hear a series of
beeps or spoken announcements indicating where you are (e.g. one beep to
indicate that you’re being asked for your username, two beeps to confirm that
the username was entered correctly and you’re now being asked for the password,
and three beeps to indicate that all the information was entered correctly and
the machine is now booting up). This is all explained when you’re setting up
FileVault with VoiceOver enabled. Of course, you can login without pressing
CMD+F5 if you’ve memorized what to do and don’t need audible feedback.

FileVault makes your machine much more secure and in my opinion doesn’t impact
the user experience at all. FileVault prevents any unauthorized person from
getting at your data without the correct password or recovery key. Another
benefit of encryption comes in when you choose to give away or sell your
machine. Without encryption turned on, if you don’t want the machine’s new
owner to be able to recover your data, then you need to erase your drive by
writing data to every part of the drive. This can take many hours, and might
not even be effective with flash storage. With encryption, this shouldn’t be
necessary. Chances are you’re already using a device that is using data
encryption. For example, iOS devices encrypt a lot of your important data by
default.

Information overload: By default, you’ll log in with your normal username and
password and you’ll get a recovery key that can be used if you don’t have the
password. You can also grant other user accounts the right to authenticate when
the machine is powered on. Once the machine has been turned on and unlocked,
any user can log in and out normally. The functionality of the Guest account,
however, will be impacted; guests can only access a special secure mode where
they can only access Safari. It’s sort of like starting up from the recovery
partition of your Mac. You can store the recovery key with Apple as well as
storing it yourself. If you’re feeling very adventurous, you can use the
fdesetup command in the terminal
(https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/fdesetup.8.html)
to configure many more parameters, including changing/deleting/validating the
personal recovery key. Be sure to only do this if you know what you’re doing
and have good backups. It’s not necessary for normal FileVault operation.

sense to me either.

Secondly, some other form of security besides username and password in

about passwords being stolen or hacked, i don't think it's overkill. We
can argue about whether that other form should be captcha r not and we
can argue about whether or not there should be an accessible alternative
and what that alternative should be, but i don't really think we can
argue that something in addition to username and password is overkill, at
least in some situations.

It is true that Amazon does require captchas in some instances; I rarely
run into this on Amazon but I think when you set up an account and
perhaps when you change your password you might have to enter a captcha,
but I'm not going to change mine just to test this out. There may be some
other instances.

Fwd: (Case RA-107910) Creating a Setup with VoiceOver

2015-01-21 Thread Alex Hall

 From: Rogue Amoeba audiohij...@rogueamoeba.com
 To: Alex mehg...@icloud.com
Subject: Re: (Case RA-107910) Creating a Setup with VoiceOver

 Hi Alex,

My name is Grant and I'm an engineer here at Rogue Amoeba. I'll try and
answer your questions point by point.

 1. How do I know where a block will go when I paste it into the grid? Are
there keystrokes to more easily move blocks around once pasted?

Good question. When pasting a block copied from the library, it’ll either
paste at position 1x, 1y, or alternatively, if a block in the audio grid is
already selected, it’ll paste on top of that block and the existing block
will then be bumped one position to the right.

One important detail: In the current build, a newly pasted block is not
selected as the VO target - making this more confusing than in should be. Use
cursor keys or VO navigation keys to jump back and forth after pasting and
it’ll be selected. We will fix this.

In cases where you copy existing blocks from the audio grid, they remember
the position they were in when copied, and aim for that position again when
pasted. The exception again is that pasting one block when there is already
one selected block will paste at that selected block’s location, bumping the
 existing block to the right.

 2. I know that blocks have popovers, but how do I access them? Perhaps I
just haven't yet used a block with one, but I see no way to do this, and
vo-shift-m (the control-click command in VoiceOver) does nothing.

Some blocks don't have a popover, just controls on their face (VO interact
with the block to visit them). You can use VO-spacebar or just spacebar to
open popovers, escape or spacebar to close them. Some blocks have both a
popover and controls on their face.

 3. What exactly does the grid signify? I get that it is a visual layout of
the audio chain, but how do the numbers VoiceOver reports explain what is
where? That is, while audio flows from left to right (thus larger x values
are later in the chain), what is the y axis for? Why are numbers reported to
the hundredths place? It seems like whole numbers would be faster to listen
to and give just as much positional information. This is probably very
obvious to look at, but just hearing it, I can't see the logic.

Very good question. I'll explain a few things as best I can and hopefully
it'll start to make sense to you. We'll be trying to turn this information
into a knowledge base article for VO users soon, so if you wish to provide
feedback on this explanation, please do!

The block size corresponds to 1 unit of the grid. So a block at 1x, 1y and
another at 2x, 1y are next to each other and as close together as they can be.

The grid allows positioning blocks on quarter unit increments. Say for
example 1.25x 1.5y. Most users never see grid coordinates and wouldn't know
if their blocks are on whole numbers or not. VO users might prefer to put
blocks on whole number coordinate just to avoid hearing decimals all the
time, I know I did that during testing!

You can navigate between blocks using just the arrow keys. Left, right, up
and down will move the selection to the nearest block in that direction. You
can also use VO navigation between blocks, and when doing so you'll visit the
connections, so they are described to you.

Blocks can be moved in 1 unit or quarter unit steps with Command-arrow and
 Option-arrow keys.

Connections are made automatically between blocks. Users don't control
connections manually, so moving blocks around is the key to creating the
connections you want. Since all audio flows from left to right, its helpful
to think of connections as being made from left to right. Connections will
head to the nearest block on the right, can span as many as 6 grid units and
can be made at angles less than 45 degrees from horizontal. Source blocks
(the Application, Input Device and System Audio blocks) don't accept audio
connections from their left, but all other blocks will allow connections to
 and from them.

So, the simplest audio graph is one source block and a recorder on its right,
next to each other. If you want to listen to the audio as well, you need an
output device - add that to the right of the recorder and you are set.
Exploring the template sessions will give you some idea of what is possible,
you don't need many blocks to do many regular things.

The Voice chat session is a bit more involved, because the application block
is set to split the two sides of the conversation onto the left and right
channels, then it records both channels while you only listen to one.

At its most elaborate, the audio grid is designed to support multiple
sources, arranged above each other, each with effects and recorders to their
right. This connects up to create

Today, a major (paid) update was released for Audio Hijack Pro, version 3.
This version makes constructing recording flows far easier, among other
usability improvements… At least according to the review I read. I don't
own the app, but I've heard a lot about it. Now that Soundflower isn't
working on Yosemite, and hasn't been updated in a couple years, it might
be time for me to look into Audio Hijack again. Before I plunk down any
money, though, I have a few questions for anyone who uses this app.

First, is this new version accessible? I know it's early days, but maybe
someone tested it, or just got it, or it's been a few days since I sent
this and now you know? It's worrisome to me that the new interface is so
visual, and I wonder if the developers included VoiceOver support.

Second, how does it do with recording VoiceOver? That's the biggest use
for me: recording VoiceOver on the Mac as well as input from a microphone.
If it can't do that, it's not very useful for my situation.

Third, is there a way to record line in on a Macbook Air, while monitoring
somehow? I'd like to record audio from my iPhone, but also speak into a
microphone. Perhaps there's a way to do this with Quicktime's new ability
 to record iOS screencasts?

Thank you for any information or ideas you might have.

Be My Eyes: Information needed for potential sighted volunteer

2015-01-21 Thread Mike Busboom
Hi.

I have been using Be My Eyes for the past few days and, in general, I have been
more than satisfied. However, I have encountered several situations in which I
had to wait ten minutes or so before I was able to speak with a sighted
volunteer.

Some of my sighted friends would like to become Be My Eyes volunteers. One
person who signed up to be a sighted volunteer lamented that she had not
received a single call. She has an iPhone. My question is from her. She
wants to know if Be My Eyes can run in the background or whether she has to
have the program open.

Kindest regards to all,

Mike

Re: Keeping a journal, both on Mac and iPhone?

2015-01-21 Thread Mike Busboom
Hi, Chantell,

Thank you very much for your posting. When I posed my initial question about
journaling, I didn’t realize that it would lead to such a productive discussion.

So please let me ask one question, based on your experience. Are you
indicating that journal entries can be made, both on the iPhone as well as on
the Mac? Can journal entries made on the iPhone be revised on the Mac and vise
versa, if this should become necessary? I am currently using an iPhone 4S but
will have an iPhone 6 later this month. I have a 2009 Mac with 4 GB/RAM and
Mac/OS 10.9.5.

Thanks in advance,

Mac Journal has been a wonderful app for me. I have been using it for the
past four years with no issues. The iOS app used to be somewhat inaccessible,
but I tried it again over the weekend and it worked well for me. I performed
a sync with my mac and it went without a hitch. The first time you sync, you
need to enter a passcode which appears on the phone and is accessible with
VoiceOver. Enter this into the dialogue box that appears on the mac and
 everything will sync automatically.

The iOS app supports multiple journals and, so far, has been very easy for me
to edit in with VoiceOver. I can highly recommend both apps.

Here in Europe, it is easy (or so I have been told) to get refunds on

 always get my money back.

Re: Copying and printing a long list of filenames into a document

2015-01-21 Thread David Griffith
If what you mean is that you wish there was a way of copying non
contiguous file names from a folder then you can do this as well.

Assuming this is what you want to do.

1. navigate to the first file name using normal cursor keys.
2. Press VO Command return twice. The first press will un-select the
filename the second will re-select it ready for adding non contiguous
files for selection.
3. Importantly from here on do not use normal cursor keys as this will
lose you any of the selections you have made .

4. Using VO down arrow navigate to the next file name you want to select.
5. Now hit VO Command return again. Voiceover will say added to
selection, 2 files selected.
6. Remembering to still not use the normal cursor keys navigate with VO
down arrow and hit VO command return on each file you want to add to the
selection. Voiceover will monitor how many files you have selected for you.
7. Once you have all the filenames you want needed selected then press
command C to copy them all to the Mac pasteboard and then follow
instruction in TextEdit as before.
