Same procedure goes for ECW. I've been told how to do it, just have not
gotten around to it yet. Hope someone will chime in and advise as to a
procedure.

I was looking into this a couple of years ago, but unfortunately I didnt
finish the job; however, my recollection is that I had been told by the
people in the know(?) that it could be done (for MrSid at least) by doing
a
 bit of fiddling.

There are some files in the MapInfo\Professional directory, along the
lines
of Miffgif.dll, Miffjpeg.dll - theses are the drivers to read the
various
file formats... I think that the MrSid plug-in adds its own files to the
collection. I see no reason why these couldnt be included in your
installation - you will need to put them in the appropriate MapX
directory,
 and possibly register them.

As for ECW, as yet I am none the wiser...

Apologies if this is a bit vague...

Re: MI Animated gif maps

2000-09-22 Thread Steve Wallace

Take a look at www.directionsmag.com in their gallery for some good examples
of animated GIF maps. This one is the best, by Marc Pelosse --
http://www.directionsmag.com/images/mapgallery/88_lg.gif .

You could use about any thematic type you wish, but the one I used in my old
example was a "dot density" thematic. MapInfo Pro implements their dot
density thematic in an interesting way: as long as you are working in the
same window (all at one session?), the random point placement is generated
from a single seed. That means that whenever you change the values driving
the dots, they will always be drawn in the same order, in the same places.

You can use a tool like Animagic (shareware) at
http://www.rtlsoft.com/animagic/ , or Paint Shop Pro (low-cost, commercial)
at www.jasc.com , to paste all your individual frames into one animated GIF.

Try it out.

That's the sort of thing that could run me off from this list faster
then any thing else.

Would you be willing to pay a subscription fee to get the list
mail then? How do you suggest we afford the service? Would you
prefer twice-yearly fund drives like they do for public
 broadcasting?

It's been free because I managed to get a good deal at Colorado
Supernet for the last 6 years. That made it cost so little (and
was helped by some donations and the proceeds of an auction) that
my business carried it these last few years. It cost $14.95/mo
plus my time, which was gladly given because it has also been
good for my business. But SuperNet got bought out by Qwest/US
West, and because SuperNet isn't profitable enough for the big
wheels, the wheels are closing down that service. The hard, cold
Morlocks meet the Eloi of the Internet.

In a perfect world advertising serves to connect people who have
needs to products and services that answer those needs, and
that's the goal we would try to attain. I am all too aware that
in our real world, advertising also tries to *create* needs and
wants and stick a straw into your wallet and suck hard. We all
know that activity sucks, but is there any creative solution that
we can come up with where we can generate enough cash to pay for
the infrastructure we need to make this list a success? Lists do
 not live by email alone.

Perhaps we can do a mix of paid subscriptions with no advertising
with some freebie subscriptions that come with a helping thinly
sliced spam. How about the USGS buying up a block and giving them
out to employees? Maybe people with deeper pockets could fund
subscriptions for students who are full of bright ideas, but no
money. Maybe we could charge enough for advertising so that there
wouldn't be many (but if there were none, that wouldn't help) Or
maybe the ads wouldn't be so bad or common anyway. Maybe we could
do a mix of donations, light advertising, auctions, and fund
drives. But all that work takes volunteers or paid staff.

Advertising is the easiest solution. If you don't want it at all,
get creative, and not to put too fine a point on it, put your
money where your mouth is. The form that these will take has not
been decided yet anyway. All that's been talked about is that the
service can be offered and that advertising would be a covenant
 way to afford it.

As Henry D. Thoreau once said, "All great enterprises should be
 self-supporting."

How about some ideas instead of complaints?

... [snip]

There is one other consideration: The datum transformation the MapInfo
uses
most of the time is simple and (relatively) fast, but fairly inaccurate.
If
your layers are in projections based upon different datums, they might not
line up *perfectly*. You will have to decide if you can live with the
 inaccuracy.

Spencer is right here (of course!), and don't forget that they also may not
line up right if you have data with different bounds clauses.

release the mouse button, the vertice snaps to a point to the right about
1/4

Re: MI 6.0 A plea to lock down the tool bars

2000-08-18 Thread Steve Wallace

Ah yes, the response we always see when this subject comes up. There is a
BIG difference between "docked" and "locked" toolbars. I imagine Mr. Reid is
quick and busy on the mouse like I am -- drawing maps, changing tools,
frequently going from the tools buttons to the map window and back again for
another tool (BTW, how about some keyboard shortcuts for tools?).

The problem is that it is so easy to un-dock a toolbar when you are working.
I watched another MapInfo user do this same thing just yesterday (then you
have to move all your toolbars around to get them in the right order again.

So, we're still looking for a solution.

 Hello All,

Perhaps I'm not understanding the issue (I've never had a problem with the
"floating" toolbars). This preference can be set (first arrange the
toolbars as you wish them to layout) through "Options Toolbars (uncheck
"Floating" for each toolbar, check "Save as Default") then OK. Exit MI
and
restart, the toolbars will load docked.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

 Take care,

Does anyone know of a mapinfo application (free or commercial) that will

If it produces information that is compliant with British Standard BS7666

This is a logical field, not a one-character text field. "T"

As a side note, MapInfo will translate certain entries into a

F.

 Listers,

Has anyone used USGS geological maps from this site
 http://geology.usgs.gov/open-file/maps.html ?

The files have an .e00.gz extension, which apparently represents ArcInfo
export files compressed using a UNIX package called gzip. As per their
instructions, I downloaded gzip for DOS and attempted to decompress the
files, but the program won't recognize the .e00.gz files. Gzip notes in
their documentation that WinZip contains the gzip functionality, and can
open .gz files. However, Winzip wouldn't recognize the files either (I
tried
with and without TAR File Smart CR/LF Conversion selected), and of course
all of the GIS people at USGS are off today.

I would be most grateful for any assistance, and promise to write a
complete
 and detailed summary.

 Thanks,
 Tim

Subject: MI Removing segments from a polyline

I had a whole lot of points collected using a GPS. I used the
ConnectTheDots MBX which joined all the dots into 1 polyline.

The next trick is - how do I break the polyline up? I collected the data
  over
several days, so there are massive straight line segments joining the
end
of one collection to the start of the next collection. What I'd like to
be
  able
to do is click on the segment of the polyline that I don't want, and
press

delete. This would automatically split the polyline into 2 different
  polylines,
and leave the gap in the middle. This doesn't seem to be possible
though... I tried this "select target" closed cutter objects"
business,
  but
I can't see how I can get a closed cutter object to surround just the
segment I want to chop off. Is there an easier way? Free I hope - I just
want to make a map of my mountain bike trail!

Failing that, how do I convert a polyline to separate lines, so I can
trim
  the
lines that I don't want, then join all the lines back up to polylines,
hopefully not putting in joiners to fill in the gaps! I would have
thought
  this
task would be quite common, therefore easy to do, but after searching
the archives I can't see anyone else having problems...

Re: MI VM and MapInfo 6.0

This will have no more impact on VM than it did when MapInfo created grid
thematics. Vertical Mapper is a robust analysis tool that will do many types of
interpolation/modeling, create TIN or Natural Neighbor polygons, do grid
analysis, viewshed, etc.

MapInfo is simplyimplementing a new visualization method.

Re: MI Reasons against a NewsGroup

2000-03-17 Thread Steve Wallace

First, our corporate firewall does not allow access to newsgroups, and I
don't see that changing any time soon. I know there are HTML methods for
reading newsgroups too, but they are not very user friendly.

Second, I like the ability to get information SENT to me, rather than go
FETCH it.

Third, there already is a threaded archive (very much like a newsgroup)
already hosted at MapInfo's site.

Fourth, I save certain messages in my e-mail folders for future use. With a
newsgroup, this would take extra steps to save the file as (whatever format)
then navigate to the appropriate folders.

I don't see a newsgroup as being an improvement.

Subject: MI Do we want to create a MapInfo Newsgroup?

Recently, several people have asked me if we should consider
starting a MapInfo Usenet newsgroup in addition to (or instead
of) the mailing list we use now. I thought I'd toss it out for
discussion and see what everyone thinks.

First of all, Usenet newsgroups take a little effort to set up.
We would need someone who has access to a newsgroup server who
would volunteer to be the "maintainer" (this would not be me; I
have too much going on as it is right now).

After we get the initial issues sorted out here, the official
Usenet process starts with formal a Request for Discussion (RFD)
on news.announce.newgroups, then we need to find a volunteer site
to tabulate votes, then there's a call for votes. If we get
enough votes (and people outside the MapInfo community can and
will vote too, so you need to be coherent and persuasive in
laying out your arguments) then the maintainer can start posting
the messages to servers to start propagating the newsgroup across
 the world.

Getting a slot in the "Big 8" hierarchies makes propagation very
easy, but you have to have the votes. The process can take 2-3
months. A quicker route is to create it under the alt or other
non-big8 hierarchy. That's faster to get started, but much more
difficult to get widespread coverage because many servers won't
carry alt newsgroups unless specifically asked (and even then
they still might not; alt groups are known for carrying a lot of
 worthless twaddle).

For more info on the process see the news.newusers.questions FAQ
or read news.groups for a while or go read about it at
 http://www.geocities.com/ResearchTriangle/Lab/6882/ncreate.html.

There's plenty of arguments pro and con, but I don't want to sway
people one way of another at this point. Post your comments
publicly, and if there's anyone out there who wants to offer to
be a maintainer/moderator and champion the cause, throw your hats
 in the ring!

For everyone's information, there are currently 1143 subscribers
on MapInfo-L. Some of those are gateways and many people read
MapInfo-L from various web mirrors, so I don't really know how
many "eyes" really read this list. My guess is that to get the
votes to create a big 8 hierarchy like comp.infosystems.mapinfo,
or sci.geo.mapinfo or whatever, you will need to really get the
vote out. Typically, 1200 people is a small group by usenet
standards, but it's an active one!

If you have an opinion or some interest in getting involved,
speak up! For those of you on mirror sites, remember that the
list address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]; you don't have to be a
 subscriber to post your opinions.

These observations are all true (and the software is also useful for

you manage the problems that come up.

For instance, I have a file that I have to edit constantly, and has been

Well, again we have a MapInfo Beta, and again here is a reminder:

You agreed to a non-disclosure, which included the following paragraph:

"Recipient shall not disclose confidential information to any third party
individual, corporation, or other entity without the prior written consent
of MapInfo, and shall limit its disclosure to its employees having a need to

information by using the same degree of care, but no less than a reasonable
degree of care, and as Recipient uses itself, to prevent the unauthorized
dissemination or publication of its confidential information."

In other words, you cannot be discussing anything about the beta outside
MapInfo. The company has provided a discussion area for every beta, and
comments like these belong there.

Please adhere to the terms you agreed to when downloading the beta, or we
might see MapInfo go back to requiring signed non-disclosure contracts and
fewer beta participants.

SUM: MI Census Data Request

Thanks to all the many people who responded:

Commercial offerings, like DataMetrix and Channel Marketing had what I

data. Geolytics also has this for sale.

Many offered to send me the data for free.

Others sent URL's including

ftp://ftp.ciesin.org/pub/census/usa/stf/fl
http://sedac.ciesin.org/plue/cenguide.html
http://plue.sedac.ciesin.org/plue/ddcarto/

Where I finally got the data was the ESRI site:

http://www.esri.com/data/online/browse.html

Lots of data there, and easy to use. Plus their x-fer speed was primo. Just
be careful during the translation from SHP to TAB. They say their files are
in NAD83, but the projection was not stored with these files (I opened them
in ArcView, and they say "unknown"). The only way to get rid of a 100+
positional error in translation was to use the Universal Translator and
pick "long/lat no datum" as the projection. After you convert the files
and open them into MapInfo, save them to new filenames with NAD83 projection.

Don't get me started on all the problems with the MapInfo "lont/lat"
'projection' -- it is nothing but a headache -- but it did have a use in
this instance.

Should this be the case, you would need to go to Page Setup prior to

An alternative might be to change your default page orientation in

looking through my cache, I have recovered much of their data and knowledge
base from before they went off-line. These items may now be found at
www.directionsmag.com, with the Knowledge Base all in one article, and five
of their applications in the TOOLS directory.

Many thanks to the team at Spatial Plus for their hard work and

MI patch55026.exe

2000-01-11 Thread Steve Wallace

I cannot believe there has not been any announcement (official or
otherwise) about the MapInfo 5.5 patch. Go get it off their web site
(www.mapinfo.com). It fixes the buffer problem, the Adobe Acrobat problem,
and is supposed to speed up clip redraw (doesn't look much faster to me).

If you have MI Pro v5.5, GO GET IT!

A while ago there was a thread concerning the default lat/long behaviour

I have just experienced a weird behaviour of the standard buffer tool
when using the cosmetic layer as recipient for the buffer.
The *seed* table is in a Swedish coordinate system with 7 digit meter
coordinates.
The buffer created never gets the right width and the ends get deformed.
Only by using the *seed* layer I can get it right which of course is a
problem if I want to work with read-only data.

Can somebody confirm that this problem is related to the cosmetic layer
projection?

Mats:

This is a reported and confirmed bug. Not only will buffering refuse to
work properly in the Cosmetic Layer, but I have had it give incorrect
results in other layers as well. The only time I can trust it to draw a
proper buffer is to create it in the same layer as the source (seed).

When this was described to MapInfo recently in a meeting as "Buffering
doesn't work," a lead employee defended Pro by saying, "It works, just not
in the cosmetic layer." I got the impression that MapInfo was in no hurry
to release a bug fix as long as there was a work-around (no matter how
convoluted).

successfully, except that no mapinfo file is created! I've tried
converting to a .tab file and to a .mif file but the same thing happens
both times. Arclink runs successfully, but no file is created (see
arclink
output below). Does anyone have any ideas about what I might be doing
wrong?? Why isn't a .tab or .mif file created?

I have had this problem too. Have the person who provided this data run a
"clean build" on the data and then export another .E00 file for you. That
will likely fix the problem.

It probably hasn't appeared in the "Wish Lists" as it you can do it right

Then type the following into the MapBasic window and press enter:

set window frontwindow() title "This is a Layout title!"

The layout window will be named as desired. Also, if you save the

Re: MI Manifold GIS System

1999-10-28 Thread Steve Wallace

I have never tried Manifold. I would like to, based on what I have seen on
their web site and comments from some users.

What impresses me most about them is how responsive they are. A friend of
mine at the National Hurricane Center is about to quit using MapInfo Pro
because MI still has not improved their "smoothed polylines" routine to
actually pass the line through the known points. When Manifold heard about
the concern, they had a beta release sent to him within *days* that had
just what he wanted.

You may also have seen their post on Directions Magazine
(http://www.directionsmag.com) where they lauded the Wish List and promised
to review the comments left on COMPETITORS' products as a source of design
improvements for Manifold, with frequent free interim releases of enhancements.

If Manifold's price alone does not concern the competition, the company's
product and responsive nature should.

tempered by the fact that one does of course have to learn numerous
Manifold-specific classes. There is still plenty of learning curve.

* IMO, the interface is a bit too busy, a bit non-standard, and lacks
"polish". Example: To open an existing map, one chooses FileNew Want to
open more than one at a time? Sorry; at least I don't see how yet.

* Manifold eats RAM like nobody's business, surrendering it only at
application termination

* Standard operations are S L O W. Opening each individual map takes TIME,
then rendering (and re-rendering) it takes MORE TIME. Complex operations on
the other hand, like calculating Voronoi diagrams, scoot along nicely.

I replied to this because I want to see if Manifold can be used in a
(time/cost effective) complementary relationship with MapInfo products. Too
early to say, especially with new product announcements coming from MapInfo

will spur development of new tools for MI Pro/MapX, if not at MapInfo Corp,
then elsewhere ;-)

1999-10-20 Thread Steve Wallace

What Dan said is correct, and even if you did have all the meridians you
still could not do what you want without additional information (like the
county). There are some states that have multiple zones (Mississippi -
many; Oklahoma - the panhandle is different; Louisiana - East of the
Mississippi River is different), and the same PLSS S/T/R coordinates appear
in different places within the same state.

It is a BIG mess for some states. I'm just glad they didn't mess it up too
badly here in Florida, except for all those darn Spanish land grants.

Re: MI How to join customers to nearest stores

1999-10-20 Thread Steve Wallace

Another way to do this involves spending some money and getting a program
that will do natural neighbor polygons (also known as Theissen polygons,
Regions of Influence, proximal polygons, etc).

Using this, you can create polygons from your point file (stores) that will
divide the region in question into areas defining what is that is closer to
each source point than any other point.

You can get this from several places:
* The MapTools Company http://members.aol.com/maptools/tritools.html ($149
- I used this one for years)
* Kiev Software Factory http://www.ksf.kiev.ua/ ($390)
* Vertical Mapper ($999, but does much more than just what you asked for).

MI Fwd: AV: General--New guidance for using the ArcView list and an important survey question

1999-09-30 Thread Steve Wallace

Here are some rules of etiquette from the ArcView-L that, I believe, would
help us very much here.

It doesn't really bother me that people on MapInfo-L reply publicly, but it
does when you get 5 people sending their same replies to a person and the
list, rather than first checking to see if there was an answer posted.

For me, I still say those who need a joke fix can join any number of humor
lists or sites -- and the volume of Friday Humor is growing.

Steve Wallace
GIS Market Information Manager
Florida Farm Bureau Insurance Companies

Dear ArcView list member,

Several weeks ago I solicited suggestions for list usage and improvements
from all members. The responses lead to the following clarification of
the ArcView list policy. Consider saving this message and referring to it
before you post something to the list.

* The list's stated purpose is "the ArcView list is for
ArcView-related technical questions and answers." This purpose is
interpreted very broadly (I think to everyone's benefit) to include
software comparisons, information about software that competes with or
supplements ArcView's capabilities, QA about ArcView extensions, and
loosely related ArcView stuff such as Map Objects. In short, the list is
about information useful to people who are using ArcView.

* When posting messages, please prefix the subject line with an
"AV:" to help people filter messages appropriately.

* Please reply directly to the poster of an inquiry rather than to
the list.

* Consequently, posters are expected to summarize ("SUM") the
responses in a timely manner. This is a convenient way of keeping
everyone informed while cutting down on e-mail traffic.

* As a matter of clarity and etiquette, please (a) restate
succinctly the original question when posting a SUM and (b) acknowledge
explicitly those generous people who provided useful responses to you.

* I repeat: anything you post to the list should be either an
inquiry, a SUM, or a TIP. Do not post replies!

* Please subdue any inclination you might have to promote a product
or service on this list. There's nothing the matter with mentioning (or
describing, or reviewing, etc.) a product or service that might be of

Re: MI BNA files in MapInfo

The easiest way to get it is to download the files you need already in
MapInfo format from Directions Magazine. Go to http://www.directionsmag.com
and look under Free GIS Data for Geographic Features. All the NOAA sets are

Subject: MI BNA files in MapInfo

I was trying to import BNA files (Boundary Named shoreline files offered
by
 NOAA at http://seaserver.nos.noaa.gov/projects/shoreline/shoreline.html).
File: GL80_04 for the Lake St. Clair, Detroit River and Lake Erie.

Is there an easy way of importing it to MapInfo? I used GNA files
instead,
converted them to MIF files with GENA2MI2 translator, and imported them to
MapInfo table (both GNA and MIF were Lat-Long coordinates, and NAD83
datum).
It worked (to a degree), but the shoreline was shifted by some 100 m from
where they are supposed to be. Could anyone offer an advise on what could
have gone wrong and how to remedy it? Thank's a million.

Well, that may be the largest pre-set output size, but you can choose

Watch for new release of ProViewer
5.5 and nifty 1.0 addons ProDraw, ProLabel, and ProBuild.

In other words, watch as we pay more money for functions that are often
included in the base package and price of other GIS's. These aren't niche
products that only help a certain market -- these are basic tool sets (or
sound like they are) that need to be there for everyone, even if the base
price bumps up a bit.

MI Seemingly Senseless Seamless

1999-09-16 Thread Steve Wallace

I must be going crazy. I thought that the way I used to make seamless
tables (best method or not) was to open 1 table and use the Seamless
Manager utility to create a new seamless table. Then, I would open the new
table, select "Append to Seamless Table" and choose from the file dialog
all the other files I wanted.

Well, that doesn't seem to work anymore.

I created a new seamless table with just one table in it. I went to append
tables to it, and I get the error message, "Table is not defined
seamless."

Okay, so I create a new seamless table with some other tables in it, try to
append it and get another error message, "Table is defined seamless.
Seamless table cannot contain other seamless tables."

This is a catch-22: you cannot append tables if they are not seamless, but
they can't be seamless and append them???

I think something is broken. My logic, or their code. I would try and write
around the problem, but couldn't find MapBasic commands to do so.

The reason why I do not just create the whole seamless table in one step is
that there are almost 3,700 raster images (4 gigs) involved here.

Any help greatly appreciated.

MI Selecting Lines w/ Region Select

1999-09-10 Thread Steve Wallace

I came across something interesting today: You apparently cannot select
lines in a region using the Region Select tool. This is probably because
lines do not appear to have a centroid (they do not show up when you set
"Show Centroids" on in Layer Control). Seems like all geographical
primitives should have centroids, and all should work with select tools.

This is not a MapInfo Pro bug. The grid / raster files are set up the same
way as other raster images. Inside the TAB file (a simple text file) is the
full filename including drive letter and path. Simply edit the TAB files for

I have discovered something in MI 5.5. I will summarize in an example.
I have a folder (directory) on the C: drive of my computer, (let's call it
Manila) and it contains all of my .TAB, .ID, .MAP, .IND, etc... and the
associated workspace that I saved it under, all created on the C: drive of
my computer. I run out of disk space on My C: drive. I install a D: drive
and "drag and drop" my entire Manila folder from C: to D:, why do I lose
all of my gridded thematic map information? This will cause me days to
rebuild thematically gridded terrain data for a dozen markets. Is there a
way around this? Why is this happening? I have even experienced the same
event when I drag and drop this "Manila" folder from one sub directory to
 another.

This is very importatant as my laptop cannot save every market I work on.
I typically run analysis on one machine, create the mapinfo plots, and
then
transfer the data to the laptop to present to the customer. When I
return,
the data is off loaded from the laptop to free up room for the next
 market.

I believe this has something to do with how MapBasic uses and releases

timer that checked a directory every 15 mins and if files were there, it
created maps and processed them. You can open up a resource monitor in

Sorry, no solution, but a confirmation at least.

Good question. I'm not sure how MapInfo handles object variables in

MI Problem discovered w/Bounds Clause

1999-01-16 Thread Steve Wallace

Something that might interest those of you who use the MapInfo "Bounds"
clause to increase the precision of your maps -- don't use the Cosmetic
Layer to transfer data around. I had been wondering why some of my
points/lines would move around from time to time. The distances were very
small, to the point where some might argue, "Why does it matter?" But the
problem is, the Object Processing notices these small differences, leaving
you will all kinds of unwanted spikes and slivers when you split or erase
objects.

The problem is that I, like many of you, use the Cosmetic Layer when
editing maps. In fact, when I first noticed the problem was going through
the prescribed method taught by MapInfo for fixing self-intersecting
polygon errors flagged by MapCheck. When I copied a string of nodes from my
bounded map to the cosmetic layer, then transformed to a region and went
back to process this against my original, the region in the cosmetic layer
was slightly offset from the original.

This is because the Cosmetic Layer is unbounded -- you lose any increased
precision from your bounded objects when you paste them info the cosmetic
layer.

WORK-AROUND: If you work with bounded data, create a blank layer with the
same bounds clause and use it like you would your cosmetic layer when you
need to put/process objects in a temporary layer.

This certainly explains why I have so many unwanted artifacts in my maps...
